2022 Garden City Varsity Baseball — End of an Era
The Garden City High School Varsity Baseball team. The Garden City varsity baseball season ended on a sad note for our seniors , but they all knew how hard it would be to match last year’s special ride to the Long Island Championship. Ten players were brought back from last year’s champions to face the season with coaches David Izzo and Raymond Chaputian. This team went into 2022 with a never say die attitude and displayed maturity and sportsmanship with every game, win or loss. Losing last year’s graduates enabled this season’s seniors to step up in a leadership role. Captains Peter Halloran, Patrick Heber, Francesco Ingrassia, and Joey Wood
helped the team battle through bad weather and injuries to finish with a 14-6 record. This team was highly decorated with year end awards given to : *Peter Halloran and Francesco Ingrassia - William Goss Memorial Dedication Award, given for dedication, perseverance, and commitment *Patrick Heber (All County) - William J. Luciano Outstanding Pitching Award and Frank Kiernan MVP Award, given to our best player and pitcher *Matthew Guida - All League * Matthew Liberopoulos - All League *Richie Longo Jr. - Frederick Stuzmann, Jr. Award, given for lead-

TJ Krieg - Binghampton University Richie Longo Jr. - Villanova University Joey Wood - Elon University The end of any season can be bittersweet, and this one was felt by every player , especially the seniors and their parents. We wish continued success, in life and in baseball, to the boys of summer.

The 4th Grade A’s won the GCAA Central League Championship on Saturday June 11, by beating the Giants. The entire A’s team brought the heavy lumber with every player contributing and reaching base during the final game. The team had meaningful contributions from all players all season long. The defense was stellar all over the field but was mostly left in the ready position with lights out pitching from Jaxson Pepicelli and Cash Coons. The aces combined for 11 strikeouts in the championship game, including an immaculate inning thrown by Cash Coons in the second inning. In the final, James Crowley was the show-stopper finishing 1 hit short of the cycle. Landon Stoller swung a hot bat and got the team going by reaching base and scoring in each of his 3 at-bats. The perfect table setter. Matty “Ice” Jendras reached base twice including a monster two RBI single in the first inning. Charlie Bayduss and Jake Morales proved to be the toughest kids on the team, with fantastic defense behind the dish all season long. Ryan Chalupa’s bat was blistering during the Spring campaign, and the
base knock he delivered in the 4th inning was harder than any slap shot he has ever taken. Brian Sullivan was the hands down RBI leader of the team this year and kept that hot bat swinging throughout the playoffs. Christian Walsh was the team’s finest utility player and star on the base paths that delivered for us all season all over the diamond, and the championship game was no exception. Bobby Salata was a giant among boys, he instilled fear in opposing pitchers and scored a key run in the bottom of the 3rd. Missing from the final game was the heart and soul of the team, Robbie Vona. Chants of “let’s win it for Robbie” reverberated throughout the stadium. The A’s’ stellar coaching staff consisted of Tim Crowley, Justin Coons and Fernando Pepicelli. The biggest credit of the season belongs to the parents, siblings, and grandparents that cheered on the A’s all season long! Congratulations to the Giants on a tremendous season, and the rest of the Central League who played great all year long.

Garden City Girls Varsity Lacrosse back-to-back County Champions
This past spring, the Garden City Girls Varsity Lacrosse team earned the title of Class B County Champions in a nail-biting game. Tied 8-8 against Long Beach with just 13 seconds on the clock, the powerhouse draw trio of Caitlin McNaboe, Kendal Morris and Tori Ottomanelli stepped up to the circle. At the whistle, sophomore Kendal Morris flicked the ball back with a key grab by freshman Tori Ottomanelli who sprinted down field quickly finding an open Carla Curth. Senior captain Carla Curth provided a picture-perfect feed to her fellow senior captain Caitlin McNaboe for a perfectly placed buzzer-beater goal with just 1.7 seconds left on the clock!!! The crowd erupted in booming cheers, which could be heard all throughout Garden City! With a magical sports ending, Garden City won the Nassau County B Championships for the second year in a row! The Lady Trojans next faced Westhampton Beach for the Long Island Championship, which resulted in a heart-wrenching loss in a record-breaking six overtime game. Senior goalie Amanda Grimes saved her best game for her last with 16 saves, earning her Long Island Lacrosse Journal’s first team All-Long Island. The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team played in the Power Conference, which is the most competitive in Nassau County ending with an 8-2 regular season record and 13-4 overall record. The Lady Trojans have racked up some impressive statistics both offensively and defensively as a team and individually all season. The Trojans dominated the draw circle capturing the majority of controls over seventeen games. U.S. Lacrosse All-American Caitlin McNaboe owned the circle winning an impressive 69 controls throughout the season. All-County Honorable Mention sophomore Kendal Morris captured 43 draws, while junior Ariana Bransfield had 22, junior Marie Cacciabaudo won 17, and freshman Tori Ottomanelli tallied 13. Capitalizing and converting the draw control wins into points were the talented attackers and midfielders. AllCounty freshman Kyle Finnell led the team in goals (37), assists (17) and overall points (54). All-County junior Marie Cacciabaudo was second in overall points (40) with 33 goals and 7 assists. All-County Honorable Mention senior captain Carla Curth tallied 31 total points with 21 goals and 10 assists. AllCounty senior captain Caitlin McNaboe racked up 27 goals with 2 assists for 29 total points. Rounding out the top five was All-County Honorable Mention senior Kristen Hegarty counting 23 total points with 11 assists and 12 goals, including the electrifying game-tying goal in the Long Island Championship game. The Trojans recovered 172 ground balls this season with Caitlin McNaboe leading the charge with 20, followed by Rory Heslin (15), Kendal Morris (15), Marie Cacciabaudo (13),
Celebrations! Garden City Girls Varsity Lacrosse team: Nassau County Class B Champions! Carla Curth (12), Kristen Hegarty (10), Emily Romeo (9), Kyle Finnell (9), Tori Ottomanelli (7), Mabel Overbeck (7), and Niamh Pfaff (7). The Garden City Girls Varsity Lacrosse team is known for its strong defensive play and spring 2022 was no exception with the team ranking first amongst all teams in the Power Conference for fewest “goals against” at an average of 7.2 per game. The steadfast defense reliably stunted the offensive attack of many future division 1 athletes and US All-Americans all season - senior and Academic AllAmerican Kasey Prybylski, junior Rory Heslin, All-Conference sophomore Emily Romeo, and All-County sophomore Mabel Overbeck. Defensively the team tallied 75 caused turnovers and 158 successful clears. When the opponents’ offense was able to break through, the Trojans’ goalie coalition of Nassau County Unsung Hero senior Amanda Grimes, junior CeCe Van Blenis, and sophomore Niamh Pfaff thwarted any shots on goal. Over the seventeen-game season, the goalies racked up an impressive 84 saves. Amanda Grimes led the way with 46 saves, including 16 alone in the game of her career against Westhampton Beach. Niamh Pfaff counted 26 saves, while CeCe Van Blenis tallied 12 saves. The Varsity team was led by coach Dave Ettinger, assistant coach Janet Rogler and assistant coach Gina Leake, along with senior captains Carla Curth, Caitlin McNaboe and Meghan Rode. In addition to the captains, the team consisted of: Seniors: Kristen Hegarty, Gwen Liberopoulos, Olivia Cappello, Kate Gambino, Maggie Moran, Kasey Prybylski, Catie Kephart, and Amanda Grimes; Juniors: Marie Cacciabaudo, Katie Gaven, Grace Hopkins, CeCe VanBlenis,

Meghan Rode was injured only twenty minutes into the first game of the season but took on the important role of mentor and additional coach offering valuable insight and advice all season. This earned her the title of Unsung Hero and the Lois Chapman Lacrosse Dedication Award at the Garden City Athletic Association Ceremony. Senior Kellin Reilly was player-turned-manager this year.
Good fortunes to the seniors moving onto college next year and especially the four Division 1 commits who will continue playing lacrosse: Meghan Rode (Syracuse University), Carla Curth (Binghamton University), Caitlin McNaboe (Marist College), and Kristen Hegarty (American University). Best of luck to the Varsity team next year as they continue the deep-seated Trojan traditions, led by next year’s four named captains who will be taking over the reins: Marie Cacciabaudo, Katie Gaven, Grace Hopkins, and Ariana Bransfield.

GCHS Varsity Girls Golf had another very successful year. The Maroon varsity team finished 1st in Conference 12-0, and second in the County Tournament. The White varsity team finished 5th in conference, 4-8. Individually, senior captain Emma Sutcliffe had 11 wins for the season and earned All-Conference honors. Senior Ava Charon had 7 wins while playing in the first position and earned AllCounty Honorable Mention. Senior Lauren Oxenham had 10 wins for the season and placed 8th at Counties by shooting 78-90=168 at Bethpage Yellow and Green, earning All-County Honors and a place at the New York State Championships with the Section 8 (Nassau County) team. Three seniors, who all earned scholarships from the Nassau County Girls Golf Coaches Association, will be greatly missed. Girls Varsity Soccer ends season ranked 2nd in Nassau
The Lady Trojans ended the season ranked second in Nassau County Class A with a league record of 8-4-3. Demonstrating that they are a force both offensively and defensively, the team is ranked second overall with most “Goals For” at 32 and second for least “Goals Against” at 14. Their successes were a true team effort from a skilled and cohesive team. The JOGA 2021 girls could not have achieved the success they had without the coaching direction of Mike Heedles and Scott McAuley. The Lady Trojans racked up some impressive statistics throughout the regular season. The top points leader was junior midfielder Maya Costa with eight goals and fourteen assists, making her ranked tenth highest in Nassau County. Following Maya Costa, offensive leadership was dominated by senior captain Renee Gollisz with seven goals and one assist, senior captain Kylie Brunning with six goals and two assists, sophomore Emily Romeo with three goals and two assists, senior captain Alivia Gordon with two goals and five assists, junior Catherine Hayes with two goals and four assists, sophomore Isabella Vona with three goals and one assist, freshman Chloe Benik with three goals, sophomore Riley Donahue with two goals and one assist, freshman Kathryn Monaco with one goal and one assist, and Elle Basile one goal and one assist. Other offensive contributors with one goal each were junior Ariana Bransfield and sophomore Olivia Bailey. Senior Natalie Greiner had two assists, while senior Carla Curth and senior captain Riley O’Rourke had one assist apiece. These offensive playmakers were integral to the team’s success all season -- sophomore Lauren Hohenberger, junior Ava Lekanides, senior Bianca Trunfio, senior Gwen Liberopoulos, sophomore Kendal Morris, junior Hailey Chicco, junior Katie Gaven, sophomore Bella Ciccone, and sophomore Ava Venezia. The reputation of Garden City Girls Varsity Soccer team as a powerful defensive team was highlighted during the Fall 2021 season with the team ranking first amongst all teams in Conference A1 for fewest “goals against” at fourteen. The steadfast defense reliably thwarted opposing teams’ chances at offensive success all season - senior captain Samantha Mejia, senior captain Riley O’Rourke, senior captain Caitlin McNaboe, senior captain Renee Gollisz, senior Kaylin Kufs, junior Megan McQuaid, junior Katerina Smolanick, and freshman Tori Ottomanelli. When the opponents’ offense was able to break through, the Trojans goalie coalition of senior Sophie Myers, senior Maya Batra, 8th grader Marisa Patrissi, junior Annie Cunningham, and junior Devon Etienne thwarted any shots on goal. Over the twelve-game regular

Garden City Soccer girls had an amazing post-playoffs awards season. Renee Gollisz, Samantha Mejia, and Maya Costa all received All County Honors at the Nassau County Girls Soccer Coaches Association Awards dinner. All-County Honorable Mention was awarded to Alivia Gordon, Caitlin McNaboe, and Catherine Hayes. All-Conference honors went to Kylie Brunning and Riley O’Rourke. Riley O’Rourke also received the Senior Scholar Athlete award for having the highest cumulative Senior G.P.A. Notably, Maya Costa was selected to the Fifth Team All-State. In June, at the Garden City Athletic Association awards ceremony at the high school, captains Samantha Mejia and Renee Gollisz both received the Udo Guddat MVP Award and captain Caitlin McNaboe received the William L. Fuller award for outstanding leadership in athletics. Best of luck to the fifteen seniors heading off to college next year and showing true leadership all season: captain Alivia Gordon, captain Caitlin McNaboe, captain Kylie Brunning, captain Renee Gollisz, captain Riley O’Rourke, captain Samantha Mejia, Bianca Trunfio, Carla Curth, Elizabeth Crowley, Gwen Liberopoulos, Natalie Greiner, Kaylin Kufs, Maya Batra, Meagan Handal, and Sophie Myers. The Garden City Sharks. The Garden City Sharks completed their tremendous spring campaign last weekend with a gut-wrenching loss in the league title game. The Sharks finished their season with a record of 13-40. They finished second in the Nassau N2 division, they were a Long Island Cup semifinalist, and they won the Hershey Memorial Day Tournament. They also won the Sportsmanship Award for their league. The offensive attack was led by Alexa Corrigan, Clarabel Connolly, Ellie Bernstein & Cassidy “The Bulldog” Dowd. The stingy defensive backline was anchored by Hannah Stier along with Sonja Ohri, Cece Szabo, Nora Loeven, Bressana Botti &
Kate Corrigan. And the goal line was superbly patrolled by Emily “No PKs” Noto and Ciara (pronounced see-airah) Lynch. This team was gritty from the get go and worked hard to prove their worth. They were not expected to produce….and yet that’s what they did. They certainly surpassed expectations. And while the Sharks are no longer, we had an amazing 4 seasons together. Many thanks to the hard work of coaches Doug Bernstein, Kevin Lynch, Rich Loeven and Kevin Connolly. And a super big thank you to our trainer, Kurt Rogers. Chomp, chomp!!

The Garden City Boys Varsity Swimming & Dive team had a successful season with swimmers and divers achieving personal best times, Division and County qualifying time cuts and had a swimmer to compete at the NYSAA Boys State Championship meet in March. Led by coach Anne Sullivan, the dynamic group of young men also held high GPA rankings and competed on other Varsity level teams and Clubs. The year wrapped up with the BAA
Award Ceremony on June 13, where captain Chris Reilly was announced as the winner of Rennold Whiting Jr. MVP Award and captain Peter Halloran was awarded the Christopher Crafa Memorial Swim Award, named after a former GCHS varsity swimmer who tragically passed in 2019. We wish the graduating seniors best of luck in their future and invite any interested swimmers to try out next year for the team. Go GC!
