Police defuse hostage situation Nassau County Police arrested a Hicksville man on Saturday, November 25, after he allegedly assaulted two people and held them hostage at knifepoint. According to detectives, a male victim said he had been assaulted at an Ohio Street residence, before he was able to escape and call police. Upon police arrival, officers were informed that John Howell, 40, allegedly physically assaulted the male victim and a female victim, 56. Howell allegedly threatened them with a knife, before barricading himself inside the home, with the female victim. Nassau County Police Hostage Negotiation Team communicated with the female victim by phone

The Town of Oyster Bay's massive ‘Cruise-Thru’ Toys for Tots Collection Drive will take place at John Burns Park in Massapequa on Saturday, December 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. In partnership with the United States Marine Corps, Optimum, and the New York Islanders, the Town is collecting toys to help families and those less fortunate throughout the community during the upcoming holiday season. In addition to the ‘Cruise-Thru’, collection boxes are located at Town facilities through December 14. Spotlight on Business: Thanksgiving Balloon Parade Home Buyer Learning Center at Fork Lane

Nick Belfi and Glenn Geis SUBMITTED BY DON PATANE The Levittown Chamber of Commerce would like to introduce two members representing the Home Buyer Learning Center. Both Glenn Geis and Nick Belfi are loan officers with the organization, located at 3025 Hempstead Turnpike right next to Planet Fitness. There are approximately twenty employees ranging from loan officers to processors and other positions supporting the fast execution of a person’s mortgage – and dreams. According to Gies, becoming a Loan Officer requires many hours of training, passing a very tough exam and continuing education for the ever-changing guidelines, on a yearly basis. This training is crucial in providing a smooth process for their borrowers as well as being compliant with the law. Both Gies and Belfi love this field of work and say it is truly rewarding when you have a family who is a first time home buyer or someone ready to start earning income through renting properties – the pure bliss on their face at closing day makes it all worth it! Belfi says the best advice for someone looking to purchase a home is, “It isn’t about if you can buy a home but when you can buy a home.”

Belfi is a long time resident of Commack and a middle child of three boys. Belfi also has a pitbull that is near and dear to his heart. Geis is getting married in the next couple of months and is ready to start a family with his soon to be wife in their new home in Sayville. Geis and Belfi and the team at the Home Buyer Learning Center make it their mission to help all members of the community explore home ownership. They say that “Even if you think you are not ready, or your situation won’t qualify, we are excited to show you how.” Geis says he hears a lot that their competitors will just deny a client if their situation doesn’t meet the qualifications…… but they don’t teach them how to make them qualify. Fourth grade students at Fork Lane Elementary in Hicksville held their Thanksgiving Balloon Parade on Nov. 22. Students paraded through the halls of the elementary school for their peers and staff. Students proudly held their balloon masterpieces high. Imagination and creativity were apparent with sightings of Spiderman, Santa Claus, Hello Kitty and a host of barn animals to name a few. In preparation of the annual

event, the students read Melissa Sweet’s book “Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade,” which shares the fascinating history of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade and the creation of the giant balloons by puppeteer Tony Sarg. 2,000-year-old Relic of Apostle to Visit Various Catholic Parishes BY DANIEL J. SULLIVAN An exciting relic of great religious and historical value is visiting Long Island this week. The arm bone of St. Jude Thaddeus – one of the twelve apostles of Christ – has been making its way throughout the United States and, throughout much of this week and the next, has found a temporary home within many of the Catholic parishes in Nassau and Suffolk County. This tour, orchestrated by Fr. Carlos Martins – the Vaticanappointed custodian of this relic – allows Americans a unique opportunity to get an up-close look at a physical piece of one of the few men to have known Jesus Christ personally. Born in 1 A.D. in the City of Galilee, Jude Thaddeus was a farmer who – according to Catholic tradition – was, along with his brother James, personally called by Jesus Christ to become one of his followers and spread the message of the Gospels. After Christ’s death and resurrection, Jude is said to have continued his evangelical mission by traveling to Mesopotamia, Armenia, Persia and Lebanon alongside his fellow apostle Simon. In 65 A.D., while in Beirut, Simon and Jude were clubbed to death and beheaded by an idolatrous mob, and had their bodies buried in the city. The physical remains of the two Saints remained in Beirut until 333 A.D., when Roman Emperor Constantine – as part of his mission to recover relics of the early Catholic Church – had the graves

exhumed and the bodies taken from Lebanon back to Rome. There, Simon and Jude were placed in a crypt under St. Peter’s Basilica, below the altar of St. Joseph. Some centuries later, the Vatican permitted a portion of St. Jude’s arm to be removed and placed in an upright wooden reliquary resembling an arm giving a blessing. This item was given the status of a First-Class relic – a title given to any remnant of a Saint’s body, derived from the Latin word “relinquo,” meaning “I leave behind.” Venerating such relics is an important aspect of Catholic tradition because it aligns with the doctrine of the splendor of the human body, and the respect it deserves, as well as the ability it gives believers to grow closer to the individuals who are said to have lived great moral lives worthy of emulation. St. Jude, in particular, is said to be the patron saint of hope and impossible causes and, for that reason, many Catholics find themselves drawn to him in moments of great difficulty. One such individual was Lebanese-American actor Danny Thomas who first learned about the Saint in 1940 from a stagehand who attributed his cancer recovery to St. Jude’s intercession. Inspired by this, and his own personal devotion, Danny Thomas would go on to found St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in 1962 – perhaps

the most well-known tribute to the “Apostle of the Impossible.” Because there is much devotion to St. Jude throughout the United States, the Vatican has permitted this 2023 tour of the Saint’s arm for those who wish to personally encounter him without having to travel to Italy. On the occasion of the tour’s commencement, Angelo Cardinal Comastri, Archpriest Emeritus of St. Peter’s Basilica wrote “[the relic] is permitted to be taken for this pilgrimage so that it brings to the Catholic community of the United States of America a breath of fervor and a renewed will to follow the missionary zeal of the Apostles.” It is evident that a tour of this kind is a rarity and it is worth Long Islanders time to engage with it. For those who are not believers, this relic can still be appreciated for its many historical qualities – being over 2,000 years old and belonging to a figure who’s missionary influence is still visible today in the various nations he visited. For those who do believe, this is a unique opportunity to stand in the physical presence of one of the

men who is understood to be with God in Heaven. Additionally, the Catholic Church defines a Third-Class relic as any item that has been in contact with a First-Class relic. Therefore, those who chose to do so can have their prayer cards, rosary beads, or other objects of veneration given this extraordinary status. At this time, the arm has already visited St. Jude’s in Mastic Beach, St. Anthony’s in East Northport, St. Patrick’s in Bayshore, and Holy Family in Hicksville. It will be at Notre Dame Parish in New Hyde Park on Friday, December 1st, St. Patrick Church in Glen Cove on Saturday, December 2nd, Holy Name of Jesus in Woodbury on Sunday, December 3rd, the Cathedral of St. Agnes on Monday, December 4th, and the Church of St. Patrick in Huntington on Tuesday, December 5th. From there, the tour will continue into New York City and throughout the rest of the country until the new year. At each location, veneration is open to the public from 1:00pm to 10:00pm, with a special mass at 7:00pm.

Benefits to Kids Controversial BY TOM MARGENAU I occasionally get emails from readers commenting on the fact that children of retirees qualify for Social Security benefits. Sometimes their comments reflect surprise that a retiree’s kids can get benefits. And other times they reflect dismay that these kids can get those benefits in the first place. All I can tell those who are dismayed is that benefits for a retiree’s dependents have been around since the very beginning of the program almost 90 years ago. Most of the time, that dependent is a spouse. But there are more than a few older folks who, once they reach Social Security age, still have one or more minor children still at home. And of course, most of the time I’m talking about male retirees. I say that because of simple biological facts. It would be very rare for a woman in her 60s to have a child who is 18 years old or younger (18 is the usual cut-off age for children to qualify for Social Security dependent’s benefits). But it is not all that unusual for an older man to have young kids at home. Although when I am talking about “children,” many times I could be referring to what Social Security law calls a “disabled adult child.” So, a male or female Social Security retiree could have an older child with some impairment -like Down syndrome, for example -- who has been disabled since childhood. (Being disabled since childhood is a requirement to qualify for “DAC” benefits.) For those readers who maybe fear that benefits paid to a retiree’s children are breaking the Social Security bank, let me give you some numbers. There currently are about 680,000 children of retirees collecting benefits. And that number is evenly split between minor children and disabled adult children. But there are about 67 million people getting Social Security checks every month, so minor and disabled children of retirees make up about 1% of all beneficiaries. And now I’m going to spend the rest of this column answering a couple emails that I recently got from retirees with children. Q: I am about to turn 62. I was planning to wait until 67 to retire and sign up for Social Security. But a guy I work with told me I might be financially ahead to sign up for Social Security now because I have two kids, ages 12 and 10, and he said they could get benefits on my account. My wife is 47. That same person told me she can also get Social Security. Is all of that true? A: It’s partially true. Assuming you stop working, you could apply for reduced retirement at age 62, and your kids would be due partial benefits on your account. For the time being, you can forget about your wife getting any Social Security on your account. Although the mother of a retiree’s minor children

technically qualifies for benefits, there are two reasons why she likely isn’t due anything. One reason is if she is working. Her earnings would probably disqualify her for benefits. And the other reason has to do with rules that limit the amount of money that can be paid to a family with children getting Social Security benefits. The easiest way to explain what you and your family would be due is to use an example. Let’s say your full retirement age benefit is $2,000 per month. At age 62, you’d be due 70% of that, or $1,400. Each of your kids is technically due a rate equal to 50% of your FRA benefit. In other words, each child is due $1,000. But the law that limits what a family with kids on Social Security can get generally caps your total benefits at 150% of your FRA amount. That means the maximum you and your family can get would be $3,000 per month. You must be paid your benefit first. Again, that is $1,400. But the law says that your FRA benefit rate, or $2,000 must be used in the family maximum computation. That leaves another $1,000 to be paid to your kids, so they would get $500 each. If your wife was not working, she could file for what are called “young mother’s benefits.” But adding her to your record would merely split that remaining $1,000 three ways instead of two. In other words, she and the two kids would get about $333 each. So, there is no point in adding your wife to your Social Security account. Q: I am about to turn 67 and plan to start my Social Security then. My wife also is 67 and always stayed home to care for our disabled son who is now 32 years old. Our son is getting SSI. We’ve been told that when I start my Social Security, our son must go off of SSI and take Social Security on my record. Is that true? And what about my wife? What will she get? A: Before I answer your question, I want to explain to my other readers what is going on in your case. You said your son is getting SSI, or Supplemental Security Income. SSI is a federal welfare program that the Social Security Administration runs for the government. Many “disabled adult children” qualify for SSI until one of the parents goes on Social Security. Then, by law, they must be switched to the Social Security account. Why? Because SSI is a welfare program, its rules require that a recipient must file for any other non-welfare benefits they are due. And the same “family maximum” rules discussed in the prior answer will apply to you. Let’s say your retirement benefit is $3,000. Technically, your wife and son will each be due half of that, or $1,500. But the maximum that can be paid to your family is $4,500. After paying your benefit, that leaves $1,500 to be split between your wife and son. So they will each get $750. Depending on the actual dollar

amount involved, your son may not “lose” his SSI payments. They may be just reduced. For example, let’s say his SSI check is currently $900 per month. When he starts getting $750 in Social Security benefits on your record, his SSI check will be reduced to $170. (For reasons too messy to explain here, only $730 of his $750 Social Security check counts against his SSI payment.) If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all

Real estate borrowing, then and now BY PHILIP A. RAICES I have been practicing and performing real estate for over 42 years. My first purchase was in 1977, a small home of about 1200 sq. ft that we resided in on North Rd in the north section of Great Neck. The 2nd property we purchased was a 2-family on Steamboat Rd in 1981. Although we sold both properties and moved on to other investments, I can still remember how easy and simple it was back then, to be able to apply for a mortgage. Both were with Emigrant Savings and Loan, which is no longer in business. Our second loan was completed mostly by phone (by house phone that is). This is in stark comparison to “jumping through hoops” today with the massive amount of paperwork. I imagine one day the lenders just might ask what brand toilet paper that we use, LOL. I guess they are just doing what they need to do to protect their loan. However, where is our protection when a bank defaults or worse goes under? Yes, I know, we are currently protected by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) for federally insured banks up to$250,000 per ownership category/account and per depositor. locations, they can offer lower fees, higher interest rates and other services, anytime and anywhere. However, there are some drawbacks to banking online. Today, technology has reduced the amount of time and increased the efficiency not only in applying for a loan, but in making it more seamless. However, the applicant must be ready and willing to provide all the required and necessary paperwork to the lender that will show and prove the worthiness of the borrower in obtaining their loan. Sometimes, it can be a bit more tedious as the banks may come back to ask for additional information. Today, lenders can also verify with the IRS your income with a form 4606-C electronically sent to them to make sure what you reported is accurate. With interest rates today, and home prices as high as they are, the banks are crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s to make sure their investment in your home will be paid back in a timely fashion. Thirty years ago our access to real estate information came weekly via a printed and bound periodical that was delivered to all MLS offices. By today’s standards this was like having a dial phone and the process was extreme-

ly slow. Any additions of new listings and/or corrections had to be mailed in an envelope and hopefully were included in the updated book of real estate information. We all waited with baited breath on Fridays to grab the book to see what new listings and changes occurred for the week. It is hard to fathom the amount of work that we had to undergo to make appointments to show properties (remember, no email, no showing time applications, no internet). Back then, the description and one black and white thumbnail photo was the only way to ascertain whether or not you wanted to show the home to your purchasers. No one outside the Broker had access to the information. The problem was, could you always trust the accuracy of the descriptions? Rules and regulations were not as strict as they are today. Also, there was much more inventory to choose from. Forward to today, most information is available online for all to view. New Hardiness Zone Map BY JEFF RUGG Last week the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a new plant-hardiness zone map for the United States. Does the new USDA map offer proof that the climate is warming? No, it does not. Do temperatures shift warmer and colder over time? Of course they do. The temperatures over large regions fluctuate and hopefully always will. Just like the previous USDA map released in 2012, the new USDA map does not represent the new normal for climate. The USDA website notes: “Climate changes are usually based on trends in overall average temperatures recorded over 50-100 years. Because the (new map) represents 30-year averages of what are essentially extreme weather events (the coldest temperature of the year), changes in map zones are not reliable evidence of whether there has been global warming.”

Short-term weather is not the same thing as climate. Measuring only one aspect of weather for the short time frame of only a few decades is not reliable evidence of climate change. There have been cold hardiness zone maps since Alfred Rehder published one in 1927. In 1960, 1965 and 1990 the USDA produced maps. Each map update used more recent temperature data instead of adding to the existing data to create a longer-term map. The 1990 USDA map looked at 14,500 locations but only used 8,000 weather stations that had valid data, which was twice as many as the previous maps. The 1990 USDA map used the average minimum temperature for the 13 years between 1974 and 1986. The 1990 map showed much of the country as being a zone or more (SET ITAL) colder (END ITAL) than the 1965 USDA map. The 1965 map used data from a short, warmer period of years and the

1990 map used data from a short, colder range of years. The 2012 USDA map looked at 8,000 stations, over the 30 years of 1976-2005, and it looks a lot like the 1965 USDA map. The 2023 map used data from 13,625 weather stations from the years 1991 through 2020. A sophisticated algorithm created map information taking into account topography and coastal effects between weather stations. This map averages about a quarter of a zone warmer than the 2012 map. Average weather is made up of highs ad lows. Taking a small sampling of data could taint the data to one end or the other. If we did maps one year at a time, sometimes we would have very warm maps and sometimes very cold ones. The temperature change between two years could appear to be abrupt. A longer look at the data would yield slower changes. Each of these USDA maps has dropped older data instead of using it. This can cre-

ate the appearance of rapid changes when old data is dropped. The trees and shrubs that most people use the zone maps for live far longer than a decade or two, so maps developed from short-term data can be misleading to gardeners. All of the cold hardiness zone maps use the (SET ITAL) average (END ITAL) annual minimum temperature during the data collection period. This is not the same as the (SET ITAL) coldest (END ITAL) minimum temperature that occurred each year during that time. But Baby, It’s Cold Outside! BY MARY HUNT It’s not only the price of heating oil that has shot through the stratosphere this fall. Homes that heat with electricity are at risk because many utilities run on natural gas, and the price of it has gone up, too. Thankfully, there are steps we can take to reduce high heating bills. Experts say it is not unreasonable that you could reduce your bill by as much as 30% if you: Adjust the thermostat. You really should keep the thermostat at 68 F during the day and 60 F at night. Does it feel too cold? Wear extra sweaters, and don’t forget to regulate the humidity. Keeping the relative humidity between 30% and 50% can make 68 F feel more like 74 F. You can get a humidifier or keep a pan of water simmering on the stove. Consider installing a programmable thermostat that will automatically lower the heat at night and raise it before you wake up. They cost anywhere from $40 to $250 depending on how high-tech you want to go, but will quickly pay for themselves in energy savings. Install weatherstripping. Weatherstripping is very inexpensive and available at any home improvement center. It is self-adhesive, so it sticks to just about anything. Use it on drafty doors and windows and any place where a crack allows warm air to escape. Weatherstripping

does not last indefinitely and should be replaced every year or two. If you are diligent in making sure every possible opening is weather-stripped, you can expect to recoup 15% of your heating bill. Plug the leaks. All kinds of places cannot be weather-stripped, and require caulking instead. If you can visualize money rather than warm air leaking out of all those crevices and open places, you might be more motivated to plug them up. Water heater. If you don’t already have one, spend $20 and get an insulation blanket for your electric water heater. You will save twice that amount each year in lower heating costs. That’s how much heat escapes from an unwrapped heater. If you have an electric water heater, here’s a great idea: You only need to keep it on about eight hours a day. Turn it off before you leave for work, then back on when you return, and off again at night and back on one hour before you wake up. Of course, you need a timer to do all of this, but they’re relatively inexpensive. Some electric water heaters come with timers installed. Gas water heaters do not have timers. Insulate. If one heater blanket on your water heater can make that kind of a difference, imagine if you put a blanket on your whole house! That’s just about what insulation is. Even if your home is insu-

lated, get an inspection to determine if it is adequate. If the house was built before 1980 and not upgraded since, you can be sure you do not have enough insulation. It is not difficult to install rolls of fiberglass insulation in the attic yourself. Just make sure you follow the manufacturer’s safety guidelines. It’s simply a matter of hauling it up there and rolling it out. You will more than recoup the cost of insulation through reduced energy bills. Insulation is a good investment. Accept help. If you fear higher heating costs will cause you undue hardship, there may be help. Call your utility company and inquire about the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. This is a federally funded block grant program that helps ease the energy cost burden of low-income individuals. Federal requirements are minimal and leave most important decisions to local jurisdictions. Removing the Excuses BY CHARLYN FARGO Sometimes it’s the smallest things that can help us reach our goals. Take breakfast, for example. If you struggle with making a quick, healthy breakfast, you may need to purchase a small skillet (for one or two, depending on your family size) to make a quick egg and veggie omelet or scramble in the morning. If you prefer a smoothie in the morning, finding a place for your blender on the counter may be the solution for daily making a milk or yogurt-based healthy smoothie (adding fruits and veggies) for a quick grab-and-go, protein-rich breakfast. Think about what you struggle with. If it’s daily exercise, start next year with a plan. My doctor recently shared with me that walking three times a week leaves too many options to “wait until tomorrow.” It’s better, he says, to just plan on walking every day, closing the door to the “tomorrow” excuse. Maybe you need to find a new place for the treadmill or hang a speaker nearby to be able to play your favorite music or podcast while you exercise. It may be helpful to lay your workout clothes and tennis shoes the night before,

so it’s easier to get started on your workout. Even a simple thing like having a cold bottle of water waiting in the refrigerator may be the little push you need to exercise. If you’ve tried any of the home meal services, such as Hello Fresh or Home Chef, you know they try to apply this idea of making it easier to cook at home. Taking the work out of making dinner -everything is in the bag ready to cook -helps you accomplish your goal of eating less take-out. I’ve found this works in my own life, whether it’s healthier eating and consistent exercise, or crossing an item off my to-do list. A clean desk helps me stay on track and tackle the next project. It’s a simple thing, but if I don’t organize my desk, I can’t find the papers I need to guide me through the next assignment. Challenge yourself to make a list of your goals -- then find something to make it easier to accomplish. You’ll be on your way to accomplishing that goal.

Q: What are the latest recommendations for exercise and physical activity?

A: The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, encourages adults to aim for at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Or, if you prefer, 75 minutes to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week. Some of that exercise should be muscle-strengthening activities at least two days per week. The muscle strengthening can be using weights or simply exercises like a plank.

If you’re a regular reader, you know I love to put my slow cooker to work, so I have a meal ready when the family gathers for breakfast or dinner, or to make the holidays easier. Here’s a recipe, from Taste of Home’s Skinny Cookbook. (And using your slow cooker is another way to take the excuse out of eating a healthy breakfast.) Overnight Vegetable & Egg Breakfast 4 pounds potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 8 cups) 1 medium green pepper, finely chopped 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

1 cup sliced fresh mushrooms 1 medium onion, finely chopped 8 large eggs 1 cup water 1 cup 2% or 1% milk 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Cheddar cheese In a greased 6-quart slow cooker, layer first five ingredients (potatoes through onions). In a large bowl, whisk eggs, water, milk, salt and pepper; pour over top of vegetables. Sprinkle with cheese. Cook covered on Low for 7-9 hours or until potatoes are tender and eggs are set. Makes 8 servings (11/2 cups each). Per serving: 354 calories, 19 g protein, 37 g carbohydrate, 15 g fat, 217 mg cholesterol, 4 g fiber, 668 mg sodium. A Dazzling Sight at Dawn BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of Dec. 3-9, 2023 Even as a child, I enjoyed heading outdoors after sunset from time to time to watch as the thin crescent moon paired up with the brilliant planet Venus in the waning light of dusk. It all seemed so magical to me. But Venus is nowhere to be found in our evening sky right now, so where must we look to see this beautiful scene? In the early morning sky, of course. On Saturday, Dec. 9, head outdoors about 45 minutes before sunrise to gaze into the eastern sky. Sure, it’s the same moon and Venus, and the same dark blue sky, but something is ... well, different. The two just seem to be much brighter and more dazzling than when we see them at dusk. The difference is that it’s dawn, not dusk. Why should that matter? First of all, during the nighttime hours, much of the dust we’ve stirred up during daylight has settled, so the dawn sky often appears cleaner and brighter. In addition, since we’ve been asleep most of the night, our eyes are already adjusted to the darkness so when we step outdoors after awakening, the sky and everything in it just seem to glow more brilliantly. And that includes the moon and Venus. As you admire the pair, be sure to

check it out with binoculars, since few celestial sights appear more three-dimensional. Part of the moon’s beauty that morning comes from seeing the eerie glow of the entire moon’s disk along with the bright crescent. For centuries, this “old moon in the new moon’s arms,” as it was called, puzzled everyone until the 15th-century artist and inventor Leonardo da Vinci explained that it is caused by sunlight reflecting off of the Earth and shining back onto the moon’s dark side. Today we know this as “Earthshine,” and you can imagine it like this: If you were standing on the moon’s night side at this time looking into your sky, you’d see the nearly full Earth, significantly larger and brighter than the full moon appears to us. And, just as a bright moon illuminates the dark night on Earth, a bright Earth would illuminate even more the darkness of the moon. Though the moon and Venus appear close together that morning, this is, of course, an optical illusion caused by them lying nearly in our same line of sight. On that morning, the moon lies about 240,700 miles from us while Venus lies 400 times farther -- about 96.2 million miles. To their upper right, the star Spica is even farther -- about 260 light-years from Venus, or about 1,500 trillion miles away. To put it another way, the light we see from the moon on that morning has

taken about 1.3 seconds to travel from the lunar surface to our eyes; that from Venus takes about 8.6 minutes to get here. The light from Spica, on the other hand, began its journey toward our eyes years before the American Revolution! Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire BY TRACY BECKERMAN While I was driving in the car, I heard an ad on the radio for oven mitts. “Sometimes, taking pants out of the oven can be too hot to handle!” exclaimed the announcer. I gaped at the radio. What was the announcer talking about? Who puts their pants in the oven? At first, I thought this was really odd, but then I recalled that I know someone who puts her baseball caps in the dishwasher, so I figured that maybe there are some people who dry their pants in the oven. I guess it gives you that baked-in denim goodness. However, while this might be good in theory, drying your pants in the oven could be a major problem if you forget that they are in there. At the very least,

it puts new meaning into the term “hot seat,” and at most, you could end up with blackened trousers. Torn-up jeans are a big look right now; charred pants ... not so much. There had actually been one time -- when my dryer was on the fritz, and I had the usual 10 loads of laundry to do -- that I did think about using the oven to dry my clothes. I quickly nixed this idea though, because a) it was almost dinner time and I needed the oven for my chicken; b) it was an old oven and there was probably only enough room in there for two pairs of shorts, much less all my family’s pants; and c) I usually overcook everything I make, and therefore there was a good chance that even if I didn’t burn the clothes, I would heat them up so long they would shrink down to Barbie doll size.

Like the case with the cap in the dishwasher, I knew that using your kitchen appliances to wash, dry, heat up or cool down your clothing was not such an outrageous idea. I read that you can wet a bandana and put it in the freezer for 15 minutes to cool you off on a hot day. Of course, if you forget that’s in there, you’ll end up with a paisley-printed block of ice that would look superfine on a yeti but pretty ridiculous on you. Eventually I chalked the commercial up to another example of marketing idiocy. And then a short time later, I was in the car with my husband, and I heard the same commercial again. “Sometimes, taking pants out of the oven can be too hot to handle!” exclaimed the announcer. “How stupid is that?” I said to my

husband. “Who puts their pants in the oven?” “Their what?” he said. “Their PANTS!” I repeated. He stared at me in silence. “It’s not PANTS,” he finally said. “It’s PANS!” I absorbed this piece of information and realized I was the one who was an idiot. I also realized that the next time I hear a commercial on the radio, I should pay more attention. Especially if it’s a commercial for hearing aids. Yogurt Curry With Fried Dumplings (Pakodewali kadhi) People are embracing vegetarian and vegan lifestyles in large numbers. Individuals have various reasons for skipping meat and animal products, and fortunately there are plenty of recipes that underscore how flavorful such diets can be. Vegetarian cooking long has been a staple in parts of India.

“Yogurt Curry with Fried Dumplings” is one of the most famous curries from the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is typically served with rice and hot mango relish. Enjoy this recipe, courtesy of “India’s Vegetarian Cooking” (Kyle Books) by Monisha Bharadwaj.

Serves 4 1 1⁄3 cups plain yogurt 1 cup chickpea flour (besan) 1 fresh small green chile, finely chopped 1⁄2 teaspoon turmeric 2 teaspoons sugar

Salt, to taste 2 tablespoons, sunflower oil 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 10 black peppercorns 6 cloves 2 tablespoons ghee (optional) 1⁄2 teaspoon chili powder

For the dumplings: 1 cup chickpea flour (besan) 1 medium onion, finely

chopped Pinch of cumin seeds Sunflower oil for deep-frying

1. Whisk the yogurt with the chickpea flour, green chile, turmeric, sugar, salt, and 11⁄4 cups of cold water. 2. Heat the oil in a heavy pan and add the cumin seeds, peppercorns, and cloves. 3. Give the yogurt mixture a good blend, ensuring that there are no lumps left, and pour into the pan. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and cook, stirring fre-

quently, until the consistency resembles that of a thick gravy and the raw flour aroma has gone. Remove from the heat. 4. For the dumplings, make a thick batter with the chickpea flour, onion, and cumin seeds, and add water as necessary. 5. Heat the oil in a heavy pan. When it starts smoking, lower the heat and drop in 2 to 3 separate teaspoonfuls of batter at a time.

Fry until golden, drain, and dip them into a bowl of water to soften a bit. Remove immediately, squeeze out the water, and add them to the yogurt curry. Make all the dumplings in this manner. 6. Heat the ghee (if using) in a small pan (you could use the hot sunflower oil instead) and add the chili powder. Pour this mixture over the curry at once and serve without stirring.

Noodle Kugel When preparing meals for Chanukah celebrations, some families may want to serve kugel. Kugel is a Jewish dish that is similar to a casserole or pudding. Kugel originated more than 800 years ago in southern Germany. Kugel soon became a staple within Jewish households throughout eastern Europe and eventually the United States.

There are many ways to make kugel. Some recipes feature potatoes, bread or rice as the main starchy ingredient. Kugel also can be sweet or savory. “Lokshen” (noodle) kugel is perhaps the most traditional. It blends light and airy egg noodles with moist and creamy dairy ingredients. Chanukah celebrants can try this recipe for “Noodle Kugel,” courtesy of Taste of Home.

Serves 15

2 cups 4 percent cottage cheese

1 package (1 pound) egg noodles 1⁄2 cup butter, melted 8 large eggs 2 cups sugar 2 cups sour cream

Topping 3⁄4 cup cinnamon graham cracker crumbs (about 4 whole crackers) 3 tablespoons butter, melted

1. Cook noodles according to package directions; drain. Toss with butter; set aside. In a large bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, sour cream and cottage cheese until

well blended. Stir in noodles. 2. Transfer to a greased 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Combine the cracker crumbs and butter; sprinkle over top.

3. Bake, uncovered, at 350 F until a thermometer reads 160 F, 50 to 55 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before cutting. Serve warm or cold.

Bethpage students come together for holiday service project

Bethpage students from Central Boulevard Elementary School recently celebrated Thoughtful Thursday with a holiday-themed service activity. Each student in grades K-5 created a placemat to mark the beginning of the upcoming new year. The placemats will be laminated and then donated to a local Bristol Assisted Living for the senior citizens to use around the New Year or for their New Year’s Eve dinners. Each placemat had a different layout based on grade level. However, every student had the same goal in mind – create something that

would make the senior citizens smile. Younger students filled out two boxes that read “In 2024, be…” and “In 2024, think…” They wrote examples such as “be kind” and “think positive thoughts.” Older students completed a placement with 10 boxes on it. Inside the boxes, they included something to look forward to in 2024. Students used crayons and markers to make their placemats stand out. The Bethpage Union Free School District is proud to announce that 47 student-musicians were selected to participate in the 2024 Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival in January. This year’s festival will be held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post and will feature talented Nassau County student-musicians. Each year, students are selected to attend the festival based on their performance at the New York State School Music Association Adjudication Festival. They also must be nominated by their music teachers. In addition, 10 Bethpage student-musicians were selected to attend the Long

Island String Festival Association’s upcoming intermediate and secondary festivals. The Nassau Secondary Festival will be held Feb. 2–4 at Levittown’s Wisdom Lane Middle School and will feature students-musicians from grades 9–12. The Nassau Intermediate Festival will be held March 1–3 at Uniondale High School and will include student-musicians from grades 5–8. During both festivals, student-musicians from across Nassau County will participate in rehearsals and a culminating concert. Bethpage students host annual Thanksgiving Feast Bethpage first graders from Kramer Lane Elementary School held their annual Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 17. Family members were invited to the school for the special celebration which was held in Kramer Lane’s all-purpose room. Under the direction of music teacher Jonathan Wibben, the first graders performed three songs – “Whacky Gobbler,” “It’s Thanksgiving Time” and “We Give Thanks.” They also wore turkey hats for the special occasion which they created in art class. Following the performance, students sat with their family members

at their class’ table which was decorated with placemats and pumpkins that the students created. The event was a group effort as families contributed funds for the food and first grade class parents helped set up the tables and purchase the food items. During the feast, students and their special guests enjoyed an array of Thanksgiving food and desserts while they mingled with classmates, teachers and family members. Free construction apprentice training program Town of Oyster Bay will be partnering with Opportunities Long Island to present a free apprenticeship preparation training program for those interested in working in building and construction trades. An information session will be held on Tuesday, December 12th at 10 a.m. at the Hicksville Career Center, located at 301 W Old Country Road, Hicksville. "I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay will be hosting an apprenticeship training program to prepare residents for a career in the building and construction trades of the Nassau-Suffolk Building Trades. Apprenticeships are the backbone of our community's success, providing a vital bridge between education and employment. They offer a unique

and hands-on approach to learning, allowing individuals to gain valuable skills while contributing directly to the workforce. Apprenticeships are not just about jobs; they're about empowerment, self-reliance, and the cultivation of a skilled and capable workforce,” Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. Opportunities Long Island is an intensive 240-hour training program which includes OSHA 30, Blueprint Reading, and much more to help prepare you for a career in the building and construction trades of the Nassau-Suffolk Building Trades. Training is provided at no cost to residents. Eligibility requirements are as follows: • Be a resident of Nassau or Suffolk County

• Capable of performing 8 hours of physical labor each day • Have a valid driver’s license • Willing to travel to job sites throughout Long Island and New York City • Be 18 years or older • Legally eligible to work in the US • Able to pass a reading and math test at the 8th grade level • Possess a High School Diploma, GED or TASC at the time of application • Be unemployed or have a low income • Able to attend class Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and occasional Saturdays • Able to pass a drug test

To apply, attend the information session on Tuesday, December 12, at 10 a.m. at the Hicksville Career Center (301 W Old Country Road, Hicksville). The session will run for 3 hours and includes a reading and math test. No one will be admitted after the start time. This program is presented in partnership with the Long Island Federation of Labor, Building and Construction Trades Council of Nassau and Suffolk, New York State Department of Labor, Workforce Development Board, American Job Center Network, and Opportunities Long Island. Kramer Lane second graders from the Bethpage Union Free School District learned how to create their own corn husk dolls on Nov. 21 with the help of Nassau BOCES naturalists. The handson activity was part of Nassau BOCES’ Colonial Crafts program. While following the guidance of the naturalists, the students used corn

husk, string and ribbon to assemble their corn husk doll just as the settlers did. The second graders helped each other throughout the process and they each made their corn husk doll unique with either a dress or pants. Ice skating rinks open for season The Town of Oyster Bay's outdoor ice skating rinks at Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks have opened and will remain open through Sunday, February 25. “Ice skating is a fun activity for residents of all ages to enjoy, and the Town’s outdoor ice rinks provide the perfect setting to relax, unwind, and take in

the wonderful winter atmosphere,” said Town Councilman Lou Imbroto. “Our outdoor ice rink facilities are the perfect antidote to combating cabin fever during the winter months, and are the ideal way to help make coping with the cold fun and enjoyable!” For residents wishing to take advantage of ice skating but do not wish to

be outdoors, the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is open year-round and is located at 1001 Stewart Ave. in Bethpage. Indoor skating is open to the public seven days a week, with special extended hours on most holidays and school breaks.
