Six Ways to Reprioritize Your Finances This Fall Let’s face it – summer can be expensive between vacations, home improvements, the cost of children’s camps and dining out. Now that the calendar has flipped to fall, you may want to take this opportunity to check in on your financial well-being and ensure you’re on track for the remainder of the year. Here are some tips to help you along the way. Refocus on your goals. Assess your finances to see if you may have strayed from your financial goals (which hopefully you set back in January). If you’re far behind the targets you’ve set, review your spending habits and try to identify which choices and activities have contributed to this. There’s still time to get back on track. Monitor your credit. Get back in the habit of checking your accounts frequently. Doing so can help you keep an eye on recent purchases and may help detect and prevent fraud. Make sure to monitor your credit score, too. You can request a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus at least once per calendar year. Review each report for accuracy and signs of identity theft. Consider refinancing options. If your mortgage is not at a competitive rate, now may be a good time to refinance before rates go higher. Lowering your interest rate by even a quarter of a percent can potentially add up to thousands of dollars in savings over the life of a loan. Be strategic with your health and flexible spending accounts. If you have funds in an employer-sponsored flexible savings account (FSA), remember that the money expires at the end of the year. (The IRS allows you to roll over up to $500 to the next calendar year.) It may make sense to schedule health appointments soon, before the school year and holiday season are in full swing. You can use your tax-advantaged account to pay for regular medical and dental bills, eye exams, eyeglasses, chiropractic care and mental health counseling. If you have a health savings account (HSA), the funds don’t expire. Consider
using the funds for various health expenses this year, or keep the money invested for future needs, which may include retirement health expenses. You have until the tax filing deadline (generally April 15) to make your annual contribution to the account for the prior year. Contribution limits vary based on certain factors, including whether you have single or family high deductible health plan coverage, so check with your tax professional. Increase contributions. Boost your retirement accounts and reduce your taxable income by contributing the maximum amount to your tax-deferred IRA and 401(k) accounts. Your contributions will not be taxed in the current year. Plus, when you eventually withdraw the savings in retirement, you will probably be taxed at a lower rate. Protect yourself. Review your insurance policies and evaluate if you have the appropriate coverage. A divorce, child’s college graduation, large purchase, home remodel, etc. could cause you to need more, less or different options. Look for savings from bundling policies and pursue eligible discounts (safe driver discount on auto insurance, for example). As you re-assess your financial well-being this fall, consider working with a financial advisor who can help you sort through potential challenges, identify your key goals and develop a strategy to keep your financial plan on track. Caring for Garden City Families for over 40 Years
AN YTHING BUT PLAIN ANYTHING
THE STORIED HISTORY OF THE HEMPSTEAD PLAINS With how much the village of Garden City has developed and how far it's come since being established in 1865, one can easily forget how it all began as nothing but a mostly-barren prairie in central Nassau known as the Hempstead Plains.
The Hempstead Plains were originally a flat, wideopen grassland, likely formed by a glacial drift that flattened the land tens of thousands of years ago. They once spanned anywhere from 40,000 to 60,000 acres long, and stretched from the current Queens-Nassau County border all the way into present-day western Suffolk County. The Plains were the largest prairie in eastern North America, and to this day, are one of the only remaining natural prairies east of the Appalachian Mountains. The Hempstead Plains were first settled in the mid1600’s by the Dutch. They used the land as a grazing pasture for their livestock until 1664, when English settlers ousted them and took the land for themselves. In 1665, New York’s then-governor Richard Nicolls opened North America's first organized horse racing track on the Plains. The first races here were held to breed faster horses rather than for entertainment, but horse racing would nonetheless become popular throughout Long Island over the next several hundred years. In 1905, Belmont Park opened on the west end of the Plains and eventually became one of the world’s most important and famous race tracks, further solidifying the Hempstead Plains’ preemi spot in horse racing history. A.T. Stewart purchased 10,000 acres of the Plains in 1865 to develop the village of Garden City. His settlement made progress into the early 20th century, right as the budding art of aviation began blossoming alongside it. The Hempstead Plains, with its flat
geography and moderate climate, soon found itself the location of several airfields and US Military bases, as well as the recipient of a new name which reflected its emerging importancein aeronautics: The Cradle of Aviation. On May 20th, 1927, 25-year-old pilot Charles Lindbergh took off from the Roosevelt Airfield in the Hempstead Plains and flew to Paris in his aircraft, Spirit of St. Louis, to make the first nonstop trans-Atlantic flight in history. The spot from where he began his trek is now the Roosevelt Field mall, America’s tenth largest shopping mall. Of the tens of thousands of acres that once made up the Hempstead Plains, only 60 remain undeveloped today. The remaining pieces of these historic grasslands are scattered around Nassau County in protected reserve areas, which inhabit places including Nassau Community College, the Francis T. Purcell Preserve in Uniondale, Eisenhower Park's Red Course, and behind The Wheatley School in Old Westbury. Despite being nearly decimated, they still house certain endangered or rare plants and animals, and this fact coupled with their historical status makes their preservation important. They face formidable danger in the forms of an ever-expanding society, invasive species, illegal garbage dumping, and human trespassing, but with help from preservation groups like Friends of the Hempstead Plains and individuals passionate about conserving the past, the Plains can hopefully remain for future generations of Long Islanders to learn from and enjoy.
PUSHING 150 A RETROSPECTIVE OF GARDEN CITY As Garden City prepares to celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2019, now is a good time to look back at the past 149 years and relive its growth from a modest, open grassland to the vibrant, bustling village we all know and love. GROWING UP IN
GARDEN CITY
EXCERPTS FROM “THE KORDES KORNER” BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES
The following is a selection of columns by historian John Ellis Kordes about “recent-ish” Garden City history some readers may remember. John’s column “The Kordes Korner,” which features historical photos from Garden City’s history, appears weekly in The Garden City News. This photograph was taken by me around Christmas time in 1993. I remember how cold it was and that my camera almost froze. This is, of course, Hubbell’s Pond when there was ice skating on it. It was named for George Hubbell, manager of the Garden City Company and Garden City’s first mayor. He had built houses by the pond for his children and the pond became known as “Hubbell’s Pond.” Located on the Garden City Golf Club course, it is a man made pond dating back to the 1870’s when it was known as “Lake Cornelia” (for Stewart’s wife). Ice skating was a winter tradition on this pond every winter for over 100 years but no longer. Remember the signs - blue dot for skating and red dot for no skating. It was a fun part of winter in Garden City but that was a different time. During the 1970’s, the Garden City Hotel site was a sad sight. After the famous third Garden City Hotel was torn down in 1973, an empty sand pit existed in the heart of Garden City as the developer and the Village fought it out in the courts. Meanwhile, this small shack existed on the site facing Seventh Street and a local prankster spray painted it creating this infamous image. It was actually put on a t-shirt and sold locally. If you look at the lower right you’ll see his initials “B.C.” Who was “B.C.”? Well, there are theories and the case is still open! In any event, the fourth Garden City Hotel opened its doors in 1983. This photo was taken in 1965 looking across Seventh Street where today’s Key Food is located. Back then, it was the Grand Union supermarket with Bell’s store on the right. In the 1970’s, Grand Union spread to the corner and Bell’s moved to the left side of this photo. Bell’s was something called a five and ten cent store (later 5 cent to a dollar store). These were forerunners of the 99 cent stores you see around today. Most places had “five and tens” as they were quite popular in the first two thirds of the 20th Century. As for this one in Garden City - do you remember old Mr. Bell? How about the mechanical horse in front for the little ones? Look closely at the photo - it’s there!

Community Organizations
Garden City PTA
Together we can achieve great things Who We Are Since 1945, the Garden City Parent Teacher Association has been dedicated to serving children and families in our community. Today’s Garden City PTA is a network of parents, teachers, administrators and community members devoted to the educational, social and emotional success of children. Our commitment to creating a collaborative environment where families and the school community can work together has and will continue to foster positive change in our schools and within our community. Together we are a powerful voice for all our children, a relevant resource for our families and a strong advocate for public education. Through our annual membership drive and fundraising efforts we are able to provide cultural programs, speaker engagements, health and safety programs, monetary awards to high school seniors and so much more. Many of our events and programs have become long-standing traditions in our schools and for our students. Our grants have enhanced the educational experience for students in each of our seven schools. Our members can be found volunteering their time and talents in our schools and throughout our community. Officers President: Danielle Atteritano President-Elect: Open Position

A look back at Camp Mills
95
Camp Mills existed in Garden City during World War I (1917-19) and served as a major mobilization, training and transfer point for more than 200,000 troops sent to France. Many names familiar in history came through Camp Mills. General Douglas MacArthur, Colonel “Wild Bill” Donovan (Medal of Honor winner and founder of the OSS, which became today’s CIA), Father Duffy (you can find a statue of him in Times Square), the poet Joyce Kilmer (“Trees”) who was killed in action, the author F. Scott Fitzgerald and a host of others. Initially the troops trained on the Hempstead Plains, which was the land that Alexander Stewart bought to create Garden City. The area east of Clinton Road still was unoccupied and secured by the War Dept for the Camp. In 1917, as more troops were needed overseas, major construction as done to turn Camp Mills into a regular base with many buildings. This photo was likely taken in the Spring of 1917, just after America’s declaration of war on Germany in April. It shows how open the Hempstead Plains / Garden City was in its pristine state. Camp Mills was quite large and ranged from east of Clinton Road to Meadowbrook Creek and from Stewart Avenue into Hempstead. There is a monument at Clinton Road and St. James South dedicated to Camp Mills and one of the units that trained there, the 42nd Rainbow Division. Mitchel Field was the Air Corps portion, and it remained until the 1960s. A 1940s movie entitled “The Fighting 69th” with James Cagney has Camp Mills as its opening scene. By K.B. Smith March 1, 2013
A marching band leads the troops down Clinton Road to the camp’s entrance at Locust Street on the east side of Clinton Road.

The Garden City That Disappeared BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES
Over the last 150 years, Garden City has evolved and changed. Sometimes the change occurs quickly but usually it happens over a long period and is often not noticed while it is happening. In recent years, we have seen our business district change, personnel changes in our Village operations, the sale of the G.C. Hotel, new leadership at Adelphi University and the Cathedral
of the Incarnation and so on. Change is inevitable and sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s not. Time will tell as it always does. However, when a building is removed from our historic landscape it is gone forever. As we continue to stare at the empty St. Paul’s building for the last 27 years (27 years!!), I thought it would be interesting to look at what we have lost over the last 150 years recalling a Garden City that disappeared.
Perhaps the most famous building to be lost in Garden City (so far). This was the third Garden City Hotel (1901-1973) designed by Stanford White. The first Garden City Hotel opened in 1874 and in 1895 remodeled and expanded into the second Garden City Hotel which then burned down in 1899. Today’s “modern” hotel opened in 1983. This was the first Garden City Railroad Station built in 1873 directly opposite the first Garden City Hotel. It was torn down in 1898 when today’s Garden City Railroad Station was built slightly to the west.
2018 GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY • Friday, October 19, 2018

This was St. Mary’s School for girls along the east side of Cathedral Ave. between Fourth Street and Fifth Street. The right hand side was constructed in 1892 and the left tower side constructed in 1902. (A house located there had to be moved across Fifth Street in 1902 and it was moved again in 1988 to Eleventh Street.) The school began in 1877 along with St. Paul’s for boys in houses until their respective buildings were ready. The schools merged and then closed forever in 1991. The St. Mary’s building was torn down in 2001. Today, houses occupy the site. This building was built in 1875 slightly to the northwest of the original Garden City Railroad Station. It served as the “Estate Office” where visitors would be welcomed and shown real estate. It contained all the early records, maps and blue prints of the early buildings. It burned to the ground in 1911 and all records were lost.
This was Garden City’s first village hall after the Village incorporated in 1919. It is actually the Garden City Stables built in the 1870’s. During the early 1920’s it was remodeled into this building along the south side of Seventh Street just east of Hilton Ave. In 1953, it was torn down as a new modern Village Hall was constructed on the north side of Eighth Street (Stewart Ave).
98
2018 GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY • Friday, October 19, 2018
This was the building that replaced the “Estate Office” after the 1911 fire. It was built in 1912 just east of the railroad station and served as the Garden City Company offices. In 1956, it was deeded to the Village and it became the Garden City Public Library. (The Library had begun in 1952 in a small house at the far east end of Seventh Street). In 1973, this pale yellow brick building was torn down and today’s library was built slightly to the east and this site became a parking lot.
This was the very first house built in Garden City in 1870. It was the headquarters for architect John Kellum who was laying out Garden City. It was located on the SW corner of Rockaway Ave. and First Street. It was torn down in the early 1960’s and replaced by modern houses. (Many other houses in Garden City over the last century have been torn down and are too numerous to list here.)
This was Garden City’s first Fire Department building built in 1909 along Seventh Street west of the horse stables which became Garden City’s first Village Hall in the early 1920’s. When the new Village Hall opened in 1953 this building, along with the original Village Hall to its left, was torn down.

This was the Garden City Garage built in 1907 as a large steel and glass structure. It housed the new automobiles that were appearing at the Garden City Hotel. Eventually the building was cemented over as a Gulf gas station and just after this photo was taken in the 1960’s, it was torn down. It was replaced by a Texaco station and in 2007 that was torn down and replaced by a modern three story building. This location is the NW corner of Seventh St. and Franklin Ave.
This was the original St. Joseph’s Catholic Church built in 1903 along Franklin Ave. by 5th Street. It was torn down in the early 1950’s to make room for today’s larger St. Joseph’s Church built on the same location.
