As the mercury continued to rise this past Saturday, the GC Pool hosted a fun evening for patrons to cool off and float the night away. Families brought in pool floats of various shapes and sizes. From donuts, dinosaurs and lobsters, the pool was filled with lots of floats and happy families cooling off. Photo by Regina Moran

At the Garden City Environmental Advisory Board meeting held July 20, board members discussed the replacement of lead water ser vice lines in homes, and how Garden City can more effectively convey the sense of urgency on the need to replace existing lead lines. Village Administrator Ralph V. Suozzi explained a few ideas he’s proposing for better communication with Garden City’s homeowners about the water service lines connected to their homes. He said a good approach would be working with Realtors and those closing in on home sales in the village, because the transfer of property often requires a set of inspections and permits involving the municipality.

Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan, chair of the Environmental Advisory Board, has also discussed with Administrator Suozzi to “encourage” the Garden City homeowner, either the person on the buying side or selling side, “to remedy the lead water service line going forward,” Suozzi commented. He says there is no one-fix or silver bullet to having the lead lines replaced as soon as possible. In July, Suozzi had conversations with plumbers who had worked on the lead service lines in Garden City that were replaced. The result was identifying ways of strengthening the village’s permit process for line replacement to gather the information – bookending with the Lead and Copper Rule which requires the Village of Garden City to keep and update an inventory of the service lines made of the metals. “I talked to them about how they interact with a homeowner when they might face the replacement of a lead line from the curb stop to the home. They view both sides of the curb stop and advise the homeown er of a need to replace the line – one plumber told me their customer response is 50/50 as some will do it, and others want to avoid the expense. Based on my conversations I asked Superintendent of Public Works Anthony DeRosa and Superintendent of Building Giuseppe Giovanniello to modify all permits related to plumbing permits to spe cifically make it a requirement for the plumbing professional to inspect both sides and inform the homeowner, as well as notifying the village of the service line on the other side – whether they do the replacement or if they aren’t authorized by the homeowner to do it,” Suozzi explained. Going forward, for village records all Garden City homeowners would 631.549.7401.

As the Garden City Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) began its July meeting, Village Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan reviewed a discussion topic that has been on officials’ minds for years – ways of effectively and consistently engaging the public. Carter Flanagan, chair person of the EAB, noted a 20-minute video recording of a presentation on Garden City’s trees from the group’s March 23 meeting. She explained that there was a lengthy set of scientific points and informational slides pre sented by Vincent Drzewucki of Cornell University, that was summarized and posted on the village website. She acknowledged that there are challenges with having village residents attend weeknight meetings of the EAB, although they are held once a month. The focus of the EAB has shifted to disseminating information in other means, beyond spo radic posts on the village’s 42

By all accounts the event was a big Unfortunately, hit. right now the pool administration is facing a shortage of certified lifeguards as college students are starting to return to school. The pool has had to reduce its hours some what in order to keep swimmers safe, which is unfortunate. The new hours will be 11 am to 7 pm every day. Earlier in the week we had heard that the village was considering an earlier closing time, which would have made it difficult for people with traditional 9-5 jobs to get in a few laps. Hopefully by keeping it open until seven, though, those needs will be met. It’s a difficult juggling act, to keep a large facility such as the pool open, clean and safe during a time when it’s hard to hire employees. If any residents happen to be certi fied life guards with some extra time on their hands, the GC Pool would love to have your help. Check with the Recreation Department for information. Do
Save water and money
If all residents in Garden City invest ed in smart sprinkler controllers, we would see a very meaningful reduction in overall water usage in the Richardvillage.Catalano
service
To the YourEditor:most significant use of water is likely from watering your lawn. In my home, I estimate that it represents approximately 50% of my annual water usage.Last summer I installed a Rachio smart sprinkler controller which is available on Amazon for $200. I had it installed for an additional $80 by my sprinkler company for a total invest ment of $280. If you are handy, you can install it yourself. The Rachio controller uses technol ogy to reduce water usage by consid ering local weather conditions rather than relying on inefficient rain sen sors. You can easily control the device from anywhere using an app on your smartphone. My water usage during the summer has declined significant ly – over 20% and I have already more than recouped my $280 investment in lower water bills. More important is the amount of water being conserved.

As reported on the Library’s web site, the first home of the Garden City Public Library began its operations in a small clapboard house at the east end of Seventh Street on loan from the Village. The fledgling library opened in May, 1952. From there it went on to the former office building of the Garden City Company on Hilton Avenue in 1958. Then, due to an unanticipated “explosion of knowledge” over the next decade, the need became apparent for a new building to house a library appro priate to the cultural, educational and recreational needs of the communi ty. According to the Library’s web site, the new building was dedicated in September of 1973. Today the Library has over 160,000 holdings, including books, periodicals films and other audio-visualMariannematerials.Malagon will bring Rotarians and guests up to date on cur rent activities and what lies ahead at this community resource, who’s mis sion is to “connect people with infor mation.”Having been the director of the Garden City Public Library since 2018, Marianne received a B.A. in commu nications and her masters in library science at Queens College. During this event, Commissioner Kenneth Jackson, Detective Sergeant Grimes, Detective Roumeliotis and Detective Hennessy met with many res idents, including seniors, adults, Pool staff and children, to discuss current issues that impact the safety and wel fare of the community. In addition, Garden City Detectives, along with Nassau County PD Missing Persons Detective Mike Siarkowicz, promoted the two Departments’ co-sponsorship of the program, “Project Lifesaver.” In this program, families can obtain special transmitter brace lets for at-risk children and adults. If these individuals go missing or cannot be located, Garden City and Nassau County Police Departments can track their whereabouts by utilizing a spe cially designed tracking receiver. These tools help officers find these at-risk indi viduals so that they can be promptly reunited with their families. Police Commissioner Jackson stated, “Events such as National Night Out pro vide an opportunity for the Department and community to come together and discuss security and safety issues that impact their everyday lives.”

This is written in Saratoga Springs. I must say that spending a very enjoyable birthday weekend here, as well as the many expres sions of good will I received, (almost) make it worth turning 70.

A feature this week in Saratoga is the annual select horse sales, where about 200 of the most promising, and well bred, yearling thoroughbreds are auctioned off. The young horses in the sales ring are definitely not in my price range, so my participation in the sales is basically limited to an interested spectator enjoying a cocktail. Nevertheless, admission to the sales is free and the spirited bid ding from domestic and internation al buyers makes for quite a spectacle. The scene here in Saratoga some what epitomizes the mixed and ten tative state of the national economy. You can certainly point to a num ber of big positives. Based on the first night sales figures, the horse auction is doing very well with the average (over $400,000) and median sales price both up and the buyback rate down. The sales topper was a yearling that went for $1.5 million.

Meanwhile, throughout the summer race meet, rank and file support has been strong, with both on track and off track handle (the amount bet on the races) up considerably over last year, and attendance also up, as people have almost completely put the pandemic behind them. Crowds are also good at restaurants and other area attractions, including the Saratoga Performing Arts Center. On the other hand, you see hints here of some of the problems with the overall economy. Consistent with the 8.7 percent national spike in the consumer price index, prices in Saratoga are up considerably rela tive to last year, whether it's the cost of gas at the pump, restaurants bills or other purchases. As is the case nationally, there is still evidence of a labor shortage. Restaurant hours are sometimes curtailed because of staff ing issues and one not inexpensive name brand hotel near town makes you put in a reservation if you want housekeeping services in your room. And, while employment in Saratoga is currently strong, there is a shadow over the economy here and elsewhere of the Federal Reserve Bank's continuing attempts to rein inflation by raising interest rates. In both June and July, there were .75 percent increases, and there is talk of a third hike in September. This raises the costs of businesses and consumers to borrow money, and also increases the costs of acquiring a home.Despite the efforts of politicians to deal with inflation through the opti mistically named Inflation Reduction Act, many people wonder if the huge price hikes will end anytime soon without severe shocks to the econ omy. While the present debate over whether the United States is current ly in a recession after two quarters of negative economic growth (but also strong current employment num bers) is something of an academic exercise, there is a fear here and elsewhere that slowing growth will make a recession all too real. Of course whether you live in Saratoga or not, if you have a 401(k) or other brokerage account, you are affected by the up and downs of the stock market. While there was some thing of a recovery in July, all of the major indexes are well below their levels at the end of 2021. The dollar is strong against other currencies. This is a bit of a mixed bag, since it makes foreign travel a relative bargain, and actually restrains oil prices a little since the price per barrel is denom inated in dollars, but also makes American goods sold abroad seem more expensive. So I guess you could say that these are good times in Saratoga and for much of the rest of the country, at least in the short term. Nevertheless, there are obvious economic clouds on the horizon of continuing infla tion and the effect of the Fed's efforts to keep prices under control. This is a town where betting a few dollars is part of the local culture, but it takes considerable courage to wager on a soft economic landing and that the summer next year will be quite as good as this one.

The program runs from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. at Garden City High School and provides experiences for children in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. There are more than 200 Garden City high school students who volun teer and help the classroom teachers with hands on projects and activities. The Garden City summer enrich ment program ended July 29.
The Garden City News is a relatively small operation and I was always amazed at how much got done each week to produce it. Over the years much of this was on Lorraine’s shoulders and she got it done with good cheer despite the stress of deadlines. She often dealt with advertisers concerning the layout of their ads (not always an easy task!). Yet, when I got there she always found time for me. Even the logo for this column you see at the top is from Lorraine and she did that for other columns of mine in the past. When I first thought of doing my book “Visions of Garden City” I told Lorraine about my idea for the cover. She had the ability to take my ideas and make them a reality. She produced a mock up of the cover and later when the book became a reality her mock up was used as a guide for the actual cover which turned out great. Also, when my documentary film “A.T. Stewart’s Garden City” came out on DVD, it was Lorraine who designed the cover with me (which I insisted on paying her for and I put her name as one of the credits on the back cover). I could go on and on about all the great work Lorraine did at the Garden City News over the decades. She and I worked well together because we “got” each other. When Covid hit she began working from home and I did not see her as much the last couple of years. I did not know about her illness and then I got the phone call last week from the editor with the awful news that she was gone. She will be missed by everyone at the newspaper as she was so well liked. On a personal note I’ll never think of the Garden City News the same way without her big smile and booming laugh. Thanks, Lorraine, for all your great work and for always going the extra mile for me.

Last week I learned that Lorraine Menzies had passed away. She did layout work at the Garden City News for well over 30 years and was a fixture there. Although there are a couple of other people doing layout, she was the main person I dealt with. I worked with Lorraine exclusively on literally hundreds of layouts and articles that I had done in the G. C. News over the last 30 years. Everything from those two page special photo spreads to those anniversary issues that so many of you have as “keepsakes” and so much more. I can remember way back in the 1990s when the G.C. News was produced in a small building in Hicksville (they always had an office in Garden City and today everything is done there). So back then I would drive out to Hicksville whenever we were working on something special. Often I’d be there until after midnight and we would send out for pizza. It was always Lorraine and I sitting side by side in front of her computer when we were working on one of my features. She and I worked well together and although she was older than me we liked the same music, food and stuff and she enjoyed my sense of humor - I could always crack her up.

The A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop WE’RE STILL OPEN
Celebrate National Thrift Day (August 17) at the A.T. Stewart Exchange Consignment Shop.
22 NewsCityGardenThe2022,12Augustriday,F
BY MELISSA JAEGER Aha! Did you know that National Thrift Shop Day is Aug. 17th? Did you even know that one existed?! It was established to support local thrift shops and to raise awareness for char itable organizations. Thrift shops are known by a number of names, among them “consignment” or “resale” shops. But we aren’t your traditional thrift shop. It is true that we raise aware ness – and money – for The Garden City Historical Society (TGCHS). WE are one of a very few who directly sup port an historical society. The funds we raise help to defray the operating costs of the TGCHS Museum. True thrift shops typically sell donated mer chandise. We do gladly take donations. However, as a consignment shop, we sell consignors’/customers’ merchan dise and pay them 50% of the selling price.Thrifting has become synonymous with bargain buying and is most often associated with buying and selling of used, vintage clothing. However, we do NOT take or sell any clothing (or shoes). Unlike thrift shops, we actual ly purchase and sell new merchandise from the NY Gift Show. We go into the Javits Center in the City two times a year and scout out new things. Be on the look-out for the upcoming article when I will write about/showcase some of the items that we are getting for the holidays. Therefore, I prefer to think of our shop as a Gift and Resale Shop. One look around the shop and you’ll quickly realize we ARE different. During this “national celebration,” there are three ways in which you can participate -- donate items, go treasure hunting or volunteer. Donations are much appreciated, as 100% of the pro ceeds benefit the TGCHS. Volunteering is also a generous way to get involved and feel like you’re doing something good. We have 30 wonderful ladies –and one gentleman – who give of their time every week. My personal favorite way to observe is through shopping! When you walk into the Exchange, you will find lots of great, reasonably priced treasures. I often joke with customers that I am our best customer. But it’s hard to resist buying when we get so many great things in every week! In fact, many of the items that are con signed still have their tags on them. Come in and see for yourself. I want to remind you of our sum mer hours. Our Wednesday late night shopping hours have been suspended for the duration of the summer and will resume in September. Also, for the month of August only, we will be closed on Saturdays (Aug. 6th, 13th, 20st, and 27th). By overwhelming demand, we remain open on Mondays!! If you can’t make it in, please shop online at www.atstewartexchange.org and pick up your purchases at the Exchange. We also post photos and merchandise on The Garden City Historical Society website, the AT Stewart Exchange Facebook and on the AT Stewart Exchange Instagram pages. We sure do get around! Unfamiliar with the Exchange Consignment Shop? We are housed in The Garden City Historical Society (TGCHS) Museum on 109 Eleventh Street (in the basement of the building). All the proceeds from the Shop sales directly benefit TGCHS. In addition to our best sellers – jewelry (costume and fine), lamps, mirrors, and crystal (Waterford, Baccarat, Tiffany) -- we take/accept silver, pocketbooks, china, furniture, artwork, and collectibles. All items are in new or nearly new condi tion.We accept consignments Wednesday through Friday, 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. by appointment ONLY. This is done to safeguard customers, consignors and volunteers. Having appointments helps to keep down the numbers of peo ple in the Shop and reduces wait-times to consign. Please call (516) 746-8900 to set up an appointment. Unsure if your items are appropriate to consign? Email photos to store@ atstewartex change.org and be sure to include siz ing info. You will generally receive a response the same day. Remember: all the profits from the Consignment Shop support the mainte nance and upkeep of TGCHS Museum. Thanks to your generous support, work on the outside of the Museum continues.Theshop is located at 109 Eleventh Street. Shop Hours: Mon - Fri: 10–4 p.m., For more information, please call (516) 746-8900.

The Edgemere Firehouse Feasibility Study was presented to the Board of Trustees during a Special Meeting held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Village Hall. The presentation was in accordance with the Mayor’s efforts to preserve, revitalize and optimize the use of Village assets in an economical ly prudent manner. The engagement of Old Structure Engineering, P.C., which resulted in the plans presented, was in keeping with the Village’s con tinuing efforts to explore options and determine the feasibility of having the Village buildings well designed and be functional for present and future generations of residents. Moreover, determining the maximum size of the apparatus door openings at the Edgemere Firehouse will also help in standardizing apparatus size as part of a Village Fire Safety Master Plan. One of the recommendations of the Village’s Fire Safety Committee was to update and modernize Firehouses 2 and 3 to accommodate, if needed, an Engine and Truck company. The benefit of having three firehouses with equipment distributed to each location is lower response times. The firm is providing engineering investigation and analysis services to determine and then design the feasi ble alteration of the existing firehouse building and potential additions. The study reviewed design criteria - including keeping the building’s his toric architectural features, vehicle criteria and numerous options that would accommodate fire apparatus at the west end site. The study resulted in two preferred options and another to be considered. The next step is to engage an architectural firm to work with the Fire Department and Building Department to prepare detailed plans on which construction costs can be obtained. To view the full study, please visit our Village website, www.gar dencityny.net. Questions about the study? Contact Trustee Bruce Torino, Fire Commissioner and a member of the Mayor’s Fire Safety Committee, at btorino@gardencityny.net.

On the final weekend of July, the Garden City High School Class of 1970 celebrated its twice postponed 50th anniversary reunion. COVID-19 forced cancellations of the reunion in 2020 and 2021. But the delays only added excitement to the gathering of approximately twenty percent of the graduating class. Ninety classmates and thirty guests enjoyed a week end full of activities. The postpone ments resulted in a new theme for the reunion. Since most classmates were born in 1952, they would all be turning seventy in 2022. So, it turned out that the weekend was one mass 70th birthday party for the Class of ‘ 70!With many classmates staying at the Garden City Hotel on Friday night, they were able to enjoy the Friday promenade on Seventh Street and meet in casual groups at Leo’s and The Uptown Grille. The conversations and smiles went on for hours as classmates reminisced over oldFridaytimes. morning featured an his

GCHS Class of ‘70 celebrates 70 torical bus tour around the village, narrated by village historian John Kordes. Over two dozen classmates enjoyed the fun, educational tour, and many learned things they did not know about the village’s history. Following the tour, a solemn memorial to our deceased classmates was held near the gazebo in front of the Garden City train station. The ceremony was led by classmate Eric Habben. After the name of each deceased classmate was read, a white rose was placed on the bench dedicat ed by the class to the village and high school teachers. A special red rose was dedicated to the beloved class sponsor, Donald Bennetter. The highlight of the weekend was the dinner at the Nassau Bar Association on Saturday evening.
Classmates signed in and were pro vided name tags with their high school yearbook pictures. That did not prove to make it easier to recognize one another in all cases! Attendees enjoyed a cocktail hour and were then corralled with some difficulty, due to the loud and live ly conversations, into posing for a class photo taken by John Kordes. Just prior to the photo, there was a moment of silence as Eric Habben once again read off the list of deceased classmates. Following the photo, the buffet was opened, and everyone enjoyed food and more conversation. Near the end of the dinner portion of the evening, Class President Joel Catania addressed the gathering. He thanked the reunion committee for putting together a wonderful week end and observed how nicely deco rated the venue was, featuring the school colors of gray and maroon throughout the rooms. He noted that some ninety classmates trav eled over a combined thirty thousand miles to attend, with the long-dis tance prizes going to Kathy Foley Murphy, Vicki Alexander Bennett, and Terry Davidson, who each trav eled over 2400 miles. Their reward was an extra commemorative coffee mug filled with popular candy from our school years! The feature of the evening was the reuniting of The Page Boys, the popular rock and roll band from school days. With family and friends augmenting the band, original mem bers Vincent (Acunto) Mignon, Joel Catania, and Kerry O’Donohue came together for the first time since dis banding in 1968 to play songs that brought the crowd back in spirit to the ‘60s and ‘70s. After their set, the crowd had some time to wind down and say their final goodbyes. On Sunday morning, almost two dozen attendees enjoyed a casual brunch at the Uptown Grille. It was a final opportunity to renew friend ships, enjoy memories, and discuss lives. The smiles on faces, the constant chatter, the crowd on the dance floor, and the comments and reviews from classmates, all indicate that the long-anticipated reunion was a rous ing success. There have already been calls for the next reunion. When asked about that possibility, Class President Joel Catania said he was investigating whether he was subject to any term limits!

After the canalboat tour (really excellent and appreciated), we still have another few miles to ride to get to St. Michael where our ship, the Princesse Royal is docked. This day’s ride turns out to be the longest and also the hottest of our trip and when we return to the ship we are greeted with fruit-infused ice water and snacks. We relax onboard the Princesse Royal and enjoy our dinner: a delec table pumpkin soup with basil; beef stew prepared like chili; a superb mango sorbet for dessert. An Artist’s Gallery Day 3’s ride, from Ghent to Merelbeke is 32 miles (or 24 for those wanting a shorter route) to Dendermonde-St. Amands. We start cycling along the canal and stop at Castle Van Laarne, and visit the small village for our cof fee break. (The sign reads: Kasteel Van Laarne-Dit Domein is Prive Eigendom”)Weride on to Lake Donk, Belgium’s second biggest lake and a popular recreational center where we have the relaxing lunch we packed from the Continuingship. on we take a free ferry across a small river, and bike along the Weriver.ride into the city of Dendermonde. Corrie points out a statue of Queen Astrid, who is like Belgium’s Princess Di. She died in the 1920s in a car accident when her husband was driving. “He was so distraught, he couldn’t bear to look at his kids and they were sent to live with someone else.” Many squares in the country have statutes to her. Though technically our Day 2 of BoatBikeTours’ eight-day BrugesAmsterdam bike tour, our first ride takes us 35 miles from Bruges to Ghent along waterways, through farmland and villages and we get ori ented to how they organize the ride, the gorgeous bikeways, local culture, and stunning scenery. We stop at a very interesting Canadian War memorial – it’s actu ally the mangled tank turned into sculpture - and our leader, Arnold Thurkow (who spent a career in the military) tells us the story of these World War II defenders. We stop next at Castle Lovendegem where our leader, Corrie Stein, tells the story of this place: it is privately owned by a Paris-based prominent wine merchant who grew up here and uses the castle for wine tastings (funny how contemporary history sounds more like gossip). We have a coffee break in the town of Aalter where I get to wander around and look into a bakery and a church. One of the most unusual sights along the trail that winds beside farms comes when Corrie stops at vending machines where you can purchase a basket of the freshest, sweetest strawberries you have ever savored (Corrie says there are even vending machines to buy fresh chick en!).As we set out, we quickly see just how popular cycling is in Belgium – one biking club after another and families on an outing, come as a steady stream on these magnificent bike paths, trails and dedicated road ways. Our group on this first day of rid ing has been a bit slow (not my fault, I swear) so we have divided into two. I join the slower group so I don’t feel self-conscious shooting photos as I ride. As a result, we reach Ghent about 40 minutes after the first group, just in time to rush to meet up with the rest of our group for the pre-ar ranged sightseeing canal boat tour of the city (but the other group had 40 minutes to explore – we won’t make that mistake again). During the sightseeing canal boat trip, the guide points out a grain depot from the 1200s; a toll booth; a tiny tax house; a 16th century guild house; one of the historic city gates; a fish market that operated from the 15th century to the 1950s when it became a car wash but now is the visitor center. He points out a statue of a boy peeing – it’s a famous image - but he said it actually represents the leather tanners union because they used the urine of boys to smooth the leather (it was tasted to determine if the urine was of good quality), so there are many of these pissing statues. Ghent was one of first industri alized cities that made textile bar ons wealthy. But the men, women and children who worked in factories lived in pollution, overcrowding and squalor – they worked in 16 hour shifts for low wages. This, along with the university, helps explain why Flemish Socialism was born in Ghent (still a liberal/progressive city, with Socialists still in the majority). He points to a cannon dating from the 15th century that was installed here in the 16th century for defense. “It was only used once – two people died operating it. Today it is a peace symbol.”Ghent was the birthplace of Charles V who became the Holy Roman Emperor. At the time, Ghent was the 3rd largest city in Europe. To honor their favorite son for his 500th birthday, the city built the Bridge of Imperial Delight decorated with his bust. (Nearby is a sign, “Boat Tourism. Noise Pollution.) We see a formidable castle, called the Hall of Justice, which (interest ingly? ironically?) became a torture chamber. In 1949, students occupied the Castle to protest rising beer pric es. “They didn’t change anything, but every November, they celebrate.”

at The Hague (mostly about money) are heard.Corrie tells us about this town’s most unique and important festival, held every 10 years (the 2020 festival was delayed until May 28, 2022 because of COVID; 85,000 watched). There are ban ners all over the city featuring the Horse Bayard with four boys on its back. The legend (which I really can’t understand why this would be cele brated), goes like this: Aymon, Lord of Dendermonde who was related to Charles the Great (Charlemagne), had four boys who were on track to become knights. One boy was very strong (and apparently aggressive) and had to have strong horse. Bayard, to match. The boy played chess with Charlemagne’s son and in a fit, killed Charles’ son. Charles took their father captive, told the boy that to get his father back, he would have to give up his horse, Bayard. Reluctantly, the boy gave up the horse, which Charlemagne had drowned. So, every 10 years, the small town commemorates this event with a huge horse, 4 meters high, who carries 4 boys on its back. The boys who are chosen have to have grandparents and parents from here, be four boys born in a row (no sisters) and be between ages of 16-25.

Dendermonde also holds a Traditional Giants Parade, Katuit, each year on the last Thursday of August when three giants - lndiaan, Mars and Goliath - parade through the town, accompanied by 1000 actors in medieval attire, floats, bands, flag-tossers, pro fessional street performers and torch bearers.Webike to St. Amands where the ship is docked (actually next to anoth er BoatBikeTours’ ship, the Magnifique IV) and can walk into this quiet village beforeAfterdinner.dinner (beef carpaccio with truffles, pasta with salmon and lobster sauce), Corrie and Arnold lead us on an excursion to visit Sahara Stones, a gallery and home of artist Joris Maes and his wife, who gives us a tour and explains his extraordinary art. Joris built his house and every thing in it, and spends his winter in the Sahara, driving down in a van, to collect fossils and stones which he sculpts for his art. The fossils are embedded along with stones in the walls of his house. “The house is the history of my life,” he tellsTheus. fossils, some of them absolutely enormous, encapsulate the history of earth, and Joris has turned them into rather marvelous sculptures – birds, animals. They are 360 million year old fossils, “before the continents formed,” he tells us. (sahara-art-stones.com) Kasteel Wissekerke On Day 4, we set out from St. Amands for a 30 mile ride to Antwerp (the short er option is 21 miles). We stop briefly to see a16th centu ry castle which, Corrie tells us, was once owned by a cousin of William of Orange who led the Dutch revolt against Spanish King Philip II. The revolt –largely over religion (they call it reli gious freedom) began in 1568 and was finally won 80 years later. The castle is privately owned today. The cycle path follows the river. At Kruibeke, Corrie introduces us to what she calls their “statue of liberty” – a modern, sensuous statue of a woman, “curvey like the bends of the river.”

Q: I ate a Pink Lady apple and the seeds inside the core were sprouting roots. I planted a couple of them, and they are growing. Can I grow them and get Pink Lady apples in a few years?
The town is significant because Gerardus Mercator, the 16th-century geographer, cosmographer and cartographer, most famous for creating a revolutionary 1569 world map, was born here (by accident - his parents were visiting relatives). Mercator’s map represented sailing courses as a path of constant bearing, measured relative to true north (Rhumb lines)—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts. In their day, they were as revolutionary as GPS, and improved navigation at a time when global shipping was the key industry contributing to a nation’s wealth. He wound up being imprisoned here in 1543 by the Catholic Church “for radical thinking. “When he couldn’t work, he became poor.” We ride passed Graventoren (Earl’s Tower) where he was imprisoned. There is also the rem nants of a castle in Rupelmonde in the town of Kruibeke, where there is a stat ue of Mercator and a museum. A bit further on, we stop to eat our picnic lunch at a restaurant that is also a farm museum, the VZW Museum De Schuur, with interesting antique imple ments that belonged to the proprietor’s husband (we see black and white photos of him). (www.museumdeschuur.be) It is just down the road from a stun ning (privately owned) castle (Kasteel Wissekerke) and garden which presents a gorgeous scene. There has been a castle here since the 10th century, but the present one was largely built in the 15th century with lake, park and a suspension bridge. In fact, it is the suspension bridge, rather than the castle, that is of major importance: the bridge is one of the oldest surviving wrought iron suspension bridges in Europe, designed in 1824 by Jean-Baptiste Vifquain, an engineer from Brussels. “Though it only spans 23 meters, the bridge is of great industrial archaeological importance because of its historical and structural uniqueness,” notes read. The bridge, castle, gatehouse and pigeon tower were designated a protected historical monument in 1981. It is an idyllic scene. We bike on to Antwerp. A: The answer is yes and no. Most apple trees need two different kinds of apple tree pollen to get a cross-pollination that will grow an apple. Pink Lady apples may pro duce some apples if only Pink Lady apple trees are around but will produce better if other varieties are nearby. If another vari ety contributed the pollen for your apple seeds, then you have a hybrid and not a pure Pink Lady. Your seedlings are either 50% Pink Lady or 100% Pink Lady, so they are worth growing to see what you get. Let’s go back to the beginning. Pink Lady is a hybrid between the Golden De licious and Lady Williams varieties. This hybrid apple from 1973 is actually the va riety called Cripps Pink. It is named after John Cripps who worked for the Western Australia Department of Agriculture. He crossed hundreds of apple varieties and grew the seeds until the over 100,000 trees matured and had fruit of their own. After thousands of taste tests, the tree that be came Cripps Pink was selected. There isn’t an apple variety called Pink Lady. Pink Lady is a trademark name. There are at least six different apple vari eties that can be sold under the Pink Lady trademark. They include Cripps Pink, Barnsby, Lady in Red, Maslin, Rosy Glow and Ruby Pink. Mostly the differences between these apples are not likely to be noticed by consumers. Pink Lady trade marked apple varieties must meet cer tain standards of sugar content, firmness, blemishes and color to be called Pink Lady apples.About two-thirds of the Cripps Pink ap ples do not meet the Pink Lady standard and are sold as Cripps Pink apples for eat ing or making apple juice, applesauce and otherJohnproducts.Crippsalso crossed Red Delicious and Lady Williams apples to get the Cripps Red apple that is sold as the Sundowner apple. It is similar to the Pink Lady apple and can be substituted in baking and oth er Onerecipes.ofthe reasons the seeds in your apple were sprouting is because of the long time it takes the fruit to mature on a Cripps Pink apple tree. Most common

apple tree fruit mature in three or four months. Cripps Pink apples mature in seven months. This means that Cripps Pink apple trees will only produce apples in warm Duringclimates.thelong maturation process the chemicals that keep the seeds dormant in the apple core slowly dissolve away. If you are eating these apples in the spring and summer, they could be coming from grow ers in Australia or South Africa. If they are coming from U.S. orchards they have been stored for many months in refriger ated warehouses, since they store well. The seeds have gone through a simulated winter dormancy and are ready to grow. Plant the seeds in flower pots with pot ting soil. They will probably grow from a few inches to about a foot tall this sum mer. You can plant them outdoors in the fall, but the soil may dry out around the small root system. It will probably be bet ter to place the pot in a large plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator until next spring. Planted outside in the spring the trees will grow larger root systems. It will take three to five years of good care to get the plants large enough to produce an ap ple. You will only get apples if you live in warm climates that can get over 200 days of growing season weather. You will be growing Cripps Pink apple trees and maybe you will like the apples enough to call them Pink Ladies, but you will need a license to grow and market them as Pink Lady apples. BY CLAIRE LYNCH Deirdre was sitting around talking with her best friend, Suzy, about how much she liked the Harry Potter movies and all things witches and wizards then she said Salem, Mass., was only a fivehour car ride from Long Island, did she want to take a ride there? Deirdre explained that Salem was historic because it was the site of the witch trials that were held in colonial Massachusetts between 1692-1693. In that time more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft. It was an unusual but fascinating time in American history and knowing that the historic events of Salem had taken place in New England, Deirdre had made a promise to herself that one day she’d visitSuzythere.said yes, that she, too, was fas cinated by this event in history. Deirdre added that there was a pirates’ museum in Salem, too, so between the witches, the wizards and the pirates, they were game. Deirdre was enjoying some time off before she started working full-time. Two weeks later Deirdre and Suzy set out for Salem. Deirdre had asked her sister, Stephanie, and brother-in-law, Tyler, to feed her tabby cat, Tolliver, for a few days, so they were having a mini vacation.Their drive went well and they set tled into a hotel in Salem. On Monday they toured the Salem Witch Museum and were fascinated with two presen tations. The first one showed a historic look into the events of 1692. There were life-size stage sets, figures, lighting and a narration about the Salem witch hunt. The second explained how the word “witch” has evolved over time. Deirdre and Suzy absorbed all of the informa tion and were glad to get a concise summary about the events so many years ago. On Tuesday they went to the New England Pirate Museum which was also in Salem. The wax figures were life size and authentic looking. The costumes, flags and artifacts told the pirates’ story. The whole ride home to Long Island Deirdre talked about opening a shop. A business major in college, she had enjoyed working part-time in a men and women’s clothing boutique. She got to see up close how the business operated and what the customers asked for. Deirdre knew that Suzy was working a marketing job in NYC and she was ideal to bounce ideas off. She had a business degree from a different college and it was great to compare notes. Suzy hadn’t run her own business but she’d worked at two shops and her experienc es were Wonderinghelpful.if focusing on two char acters, witches and pirates, would be good, Suzy said yes because that way she could get several different costumes plus the many accessories that go with them.Back home Deirdre looked into what was involved in opening a small business. One day while driving on Evergreen Street in Spring Hill she found a good shop - the store was 1,400 square feet of space in a strip mall, per fect for what she needed. After inquir ing and speaking with her parents about helping financially, Deirdre got the go-ahead then she got busy setting it up.Two months later, after a fresh coat of paint and new shelving, Deirdre opened her shop called The Pirates’ Cove. Inviting her parents, brothers, sisters, and friends to the ribbon-cutting cere mony the Chamber of Commerce had arranged on her first day, they watched as Deirdre used the oversized pair of scissors to cut the ribbon in front of her new store. They were all excited about this brand-new Pirates’ Cove - Deirdre’s mother said it was a clever idea and she had done well - her shop was shiny and new and it all looked great! Necklaces, baubles and beads abounded. In the next few months people came from all over Long Island looking for pictures of pirates, wood carvings of pirates and all of the accessories any swashbuckling pirate would need to defendThroughoutthemselves.October Deirdre dis played witch and wizard costumes on large mannequins. People looking for great Halloween costumes had the choice of pirates with black patches, kerchiefs, belts, scarves, sashes, coats and boots as well as the witch and wiz ard outfits. There were costumes for adults and kids alike. Afterwards, when she saw photos of the Halloween cos tumes her customers had worn, Deirdre was delighted. Their costumes looked authentic and they were a big hit for the various Halloween festivities. After Halloween Deirdre went back to emphasizing the pirates’ costumes, accessories, wood carvings and signs. Many of her brightly painted pirate wood carvings stood four feet tall and people liked them because the pirates always had a certain air or attitude about them. Sometimes, when she walked past one, she could swear the pirate was winking at her. Years before, whenever Deirdre found herself daydreaming, it was all about opening her own shop and becom ing a small business owner. Having her very own store would give her the flexibility and creativity she craved. She could order inventory, set up her shop according to her own vision and interact with the customers who would come and go. Deirdre would become involved in her community and talk up the benefits of small businesses when everWhenpossible.Suzy stopped by The Pirates’ Cove she saw Deirdre happily chat ting with customers and answering their questions. She was pleased that Deirdre’s dream of being a shop owner was working out so well. Deirdre was content surrounded by sunken treasure chests that had been brought back to land in her shop and by all of the col orful scarves that complete a pirate’s costume. When her parents stopped by her mother would give Deirdre some deco rating tips and her father, ever the char acter, would walk among the customers dressed as a pirate. He’d talk like a pirate and would walk like a pirate as he strode among the aisles brandishing a plastic sword and smiling with the customers. All was well in the land of pirates and witches. This is fiction.

Q: I am 59 and recently retired. My husband is 67 and already get ting Social Security. A friend told me I can get my husband’s benefits at 60 and then switch to my own lat er on. Is this true? A: If you were a widow, you could do that. But it sounds like your husband is very much alive. In that case, you have to wait until you are 62 years old before you’re eligible for any Social Security. And because your husband is already getting benefits, the deemed filing rule mentioned above applies. So, you’d have to file for your own benefits first. Then IF you are due any extra spousal bene fits, you would file for them at the same time. But you notice that was a pretty big IF. At 62, you’d be due about 70% of your own benefit, or about 30% of his. And I’ll bet your own benefit is more than 30% of his. Q: I’m 62 and still working part time making about $40,000 per year. My financial adviser told me I should take my Social Security now and invest that money in real estate. But a neighbor told me that the gov ernment will take back some of my Social Security because of my earn ings. Who’s right? A: Unless there is something about your situation I don’t know, your finan cial adviser is wrong, and your neighbor is right.People who are under their full re tirement age and still working usually are not due any Social Security bene fits. Let’s look at your situation. The law says that for every $2 you earn over a prescribed limit, $1 must be withheld from your Social Security checks. The 2022 limit is $19,560. So, your $40,000 in earnings are $20,440 over that lim it. And half of that, or $10,220 must be withheld from any benefits due this year. Let’s say your benefit rate is $2,500 per month. If you filed now (in August), you’d be due five Social Security checks for 2022 totaling $12,500. But from that, the SSA would have to withhold $10,220, leaving you with only $2,280 to invest in real estate. I’ve got a barn in my back yard worth about that if you want to buy it. So, I suggest you wait until you retire or turn full retirement age, whichever comes first, to file for Social Security and start your real estate adventures. If you have a Social Security ques tion, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Secu rity: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets.COPYRIGHT

YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY
I frequently hear from readers who tell me about Social Security-related ad vice they got from a friend or relative, or from a Social Security Administra tion representative. They are writing to ask me if the information they received is correct. Sometimes it is. But many times, it’s not. Actually, let me clarify that. Social Security information they get from a friend or neighbor or relative is frequently wrong. The advice they get from an SSA rep is usually right. But sadly, more than a few times, it’s also been wrong. (I’ve written past columns about this issue, primarily blaming the lack of training that current SSA repre sentativesAnyway, get.)when the information is wrong, I of course try to set them straight. But then I sometimes place my self in the shoes of the questioner, and I wonder if they think this: “Why should I believe this guy?” After all, the advice or answer I give them becomes just one more piece of their Social Security puz zle. What makes my answer more reli able than the answer they got from the other person, or other people? Well, all I can tell you is this. No. 1: I worked for the Social Security Adminis tration for 32 years -- in a variety of in creasingly responsible jobs in a variety of locations around the country. No. 2: I never really thought of myself as just another government bureaucrat. I was always a student of the history of So cial Security. I was keenly interested in Social Security laws and rules, but also in the rationale behind those laws and rules. No. 3: I’ve been writing this column for the past 25 years. No. 4: I’ve written a book about Social Security that from time to time shows up on Am azon’s “bestseller” list. So, bottom line: I know Social Secu rity pretty darn well and I think you can trust the answers I give you. And now, here are examples of questions from people who got some bad information about their Social Security situations.
Q: I’m 63 and I’m planning to wait until I’m 70 to file for my Social Se curity. My wife just turned 62. My wife didn’t work much outside the home, so her Social Security bene fit is much smaller than mine. I was planning to have her file for Social Security now and then switch to part of mine when I turn 70. But a Social Security rep told us over the phone that she can’t do that. He said if my wife files for her benefits now, she can’t switch to mine later on. Is that true? A: It’s absolutely false. What you wanted to do is a very common occur rence and I’m surprised the SSA rep you talked to didn’t know that. Many thousands of women start out getting their own Social Security benefit. Then when the husband files at a later date, they can file for whatever extra spousal benefits they might be due. In fact, here is roughly how they will figure your wife’s spousal rate once you file at age 70. They will take her full re tirement age benefit and subtract that from one-half of your full retirement age benefit. (Not your age 70 rate.) Any difference will be added to your wife’s reduced retirement benefit. Before I end this discussion, I must clarify something. Some of you may remember that I’ve said many times that when people file for Social Securi ty, they must file for any other benefits they are due at the same time. For exam ple, if the guy who asked this question were already getting his own retirement benefits, then his wife must simultane ously file for her own benefits and what ever spousal benefits she might be due. But in this situation, at the time this woman would file for her Social Secu rity, the husband is not yet getting any benefits. So, this so-called “deemed fil ing rule” doesn’t apply in her case. She can file for her own benefits now, and later, once her husband files, she can claim the extra spousal benefits on his record.

NO. 4: WORK AT THE SCHOOL
Many colleges give discounted or free tuition to employees’ family members. There are lots of nonteaching jobs on a big campus. I’ve heard from many par ents who left their regular employment to work at the school their college stu dents would attend. NO. 5 : GRANTS A grant is a flat-out gift of money to be applied to tuition, with no requirement to repay. The most common is the Pell Grant, money from the federal govern ment to assist low-income undergradu ates. Learn more at Finaid.org.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Most of us get upwards of 3,300 milli grams per day. It’s true that most of that sodium comes from processed foods like hot dogs, bacon, sausage, canned foods, condiments, cheese, pickles and chips. However, a new study finds it’s not just sodium from processed foods that’s unhealthy. Using the saltshaker at the table can shorten our lives. We all have those family members who grab the saltshaker before they even taste the food set before them. It’s a habit that ac counts for 6% to 20% of total salt intake, according to study authors. In the study, published in the Euro pean Heart Journal, a total of 501,379 participants from the UK Biobank study completed a questionnaire on the fre quency of adding salt to foods before they ate them. Urine samples for sodi um were collected at baseline and mon itored after 24 hours. The information didn’t include salt used in cooking, only adding salt at the table. Participants were followed for nine years. Research ers found 18,474 premature deaths. They also found that eating more fruits and vegetables, which are typically high in potassium, helped reduce deaths. Death rates were higher in participants with low intakes of fruits and vegetables than in those with higher intakes. Always adding salt to foods was re lated to 1.5 years lower life expectancy at age 50 years in women and 2.28 years lower life expectancy in men compared with participants who never or rarely added salt to foods. The bottom line? Even reducing sodi um by a small amount can be a healthy habit. Take the saltshaker off the table and eat more fruits and vegetables.

Every state offers two-year colleges, typically referred to as community col leges. This is the place to get all your lower-division prerequisite courses at cheap tuition rates that will transfer to the college or university of choice for the two final years. That means you’ll have two more years to save up for the more expensive finish. NO. 3: STATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

Take all the free advanced placement classes you can in high school to help knock down college tuition costs. Plan it right, and you can enter college as a debt-free sophomore with one year paid in APfull.classes require students to take a rigorous test at the end of the class. You can qualify for one to two semesters’ worth of college credit if you score well. You may also get a bump in your grade point average.
NO. 2: COMMUNITY COLLEGES
Most four-year state schools offer an excellent affordable education. Our older son graduated from a prestigious Califor nia state university with a degree in film. He lived at home and graduated debtfree. Oh, and did I mention Jeremy Hunt has gone on to win numerous awards, in cluding an Emmy?
5 Discovery202212,August EVERYDAY CHEAPSKATE BY MARY HUNT There was a time when I didn’t have much opinion on paying for college with student loans. That was before the ad vent of email and thousands of messages, all with a similar subject line: “Help! I’m drowning in student loan debt!” That was before I learned that about 85% of college graduates do not end up working in their major. That was before I heard from Jim P., who took all the stu dent loans he could get to pay for college and law school. He assumed he’d quickly land a cushy big-bucks job and pay back $200,000. The fifth time he failed the bar exam, he gave up on being a lawyer. But the debt goes on. That was before I met Peter K., who be came a chiropractor on borrowed funds. He couldn’t stand the profession once he got into it. Now he’s teaching high school math. Too bad teachers don’t make enough money to service $160,000 in stu dent debt. But the debt goes on. That was before I heard from the Ne braska couple with $60,000 in student loans. They were going to be teachers. Then the baby came along, and the teach ing position didn’t. It’s all they can do to keep food on the table now that the fam ily has grown to five. They’ve exhausted all their deferment and forbearance op tions. Their monthly payment is twice the house payment. The stress has all but blown that family apart. But the debt goes on, and so could I, but I think you get theIt’spoint.not as if student loans and signifi cant credit card balances are mandato ry graduation requirements. You don’t have to borrow your way through col lege. It is possible to graduate debt-free, but it takes hard work. And you’ll have to buck a financial system that encourages students to take the easy way out by div ing into a lifetime of debt. The secret to graduating debt-free is to use every strategy imaginable to get the cost as low as possible so you can pay as you go. That could mean working two jobs while carrying a full load every semester. It may mean working spring break, winter break, Christmas holidays and every summer. The definition of col lege does not include “a life of ease.” You will never regret working harder than you’ve ever worked in your life for four years, and then graduate knowing your degree is paid in full. You will always regret that you chose to live it up free and easy on student loans for four years, graduating with a legal obligation to spend the rest of your life paying for it. Does anything about that make sense to you?

Q and A Q: What are truffles? A: Considered delicacies, truffles are the fruit of underground mushrooms that form a symbiotic relationship with the roots of certain trees, including oak, birch and hazel. Their strong smell at tracts specially trained dogs and female truffle hogs used to hunt and harvest them. Their nutrient values vary among species and growing region, but edible fungi are known to contain calcium, po tassium and magnesium and are a good source of digestible protein. Three Decades of Stargazing!
It could have been worse. We could have had no potty. I was beginning to think that we were up the wedding creek without a paddle when fortunately, my husband was able to locate the shut-off valve and get the leak plugged and the water turned back on. I was all set to get back into get-ready mode when suddenly I found a puddle in the bathroom again. “Oh, no!” I cried. “Something else is leaking!”Mydaughter appeared at my side and looked down. “Don’t worry, mom,” she said. “It’s only the dog.” Tracy Beckerman is the author of the Amazon Bestseller “Barking at the Moon: A Story of Life, Love, and Kibble,” available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online! The morning of my daughter’s wed ding dawned bright and sunny with crisp blue skies and not a cloud to be seen. But it was raining... Inside the house. “JOEL!!!” I yelled to my husband from inside my bathroom where I had just discovered the deluge cascading from the ceiling. “It’s raining in the bathroom!”Iheardhis hurried steps pound up the stairs before he appeared breathless at the door. He assessed the situation and then said succinctly, “Well, that’s not good.” “Not good” was putting it mildly. We had a full house with the bridal coupleto-be in one bedroom, my son and his girlfriend in another, three bridesmaids bunked up in another bedroom and several assorted members of the bridal party elsewhere on the premises. There were three bathrooms, and apparently one of them was leaking and one of them was being leaked into. And we had a wedding to all get ready for later that afternoon.Itwaslike the movie “Mamma Mia!” met“Turn“Titanic.”off the water upstairs!” I shouted to my husband. “Don’t flush the toilet,” yelled my husband upstairs. “Ruff, ruff!” barked my daughter’s dog, the only one who genuinely seemed happy about the mess. Meanwhile from down below I heard my son yell, “UH-OH! Mom, it’s raining down here, too!” I raced to the floor below to find that the water that had leaked from the third-floor bathroom into the sec ond-floor bathroom had now found its way into the first-floor bathroom. We were three for three. I started grab bing towels from the laundry room, which was still, somehow, miraculously dry, and began throwing them onto the floors to stem the flow of water. “You know, it’s supposed to be good luck if it rains on your wedding day,” I said to my husband who had appeared from the basement with a wrench and a bucket.“Outside,” he replied. “It’s good luck if it rains outside.” “Oh,” I said. I had to admit, it did not seem like a lucky start to the day. The good news was that it was beautiful outside and we were having an outdoor wedding. The bad news, of course, was it was cloudy with a chance of monsoon in the house. Additionally, we didn’t have time to find a plumber who worked on a Sunday who could arrive immediately so we could all get ready in time for the wedding. And while my husband was handy in a “change a roll of toilet paper” kind of way, he was not handy in a “find a busted water valve and replace it without having the bathroom cave in” kind of way. I began having flashbacks to the time we lived in a house with two adults and two toddlers and only one bathroom. The toilet broke and we were forced to use my daughter’s potty for three days.
It’s hard to believe, but it will be 30 years on Aug. 19 since I published my first “Stargazers” column. Over those years, we’ve seen eclipses darken the land, planets converge in the sky or transit across the sun, meteor showers rain from above, and some of the most spectacular comets in history drift mysteriously across the silent heavens.
Adding to those memories, just a few weeks ago I watched as NASA unveiled the first breathtaking images produced by the new James Webb Space Telescope, an instrument that has already begun to revolutionize the science of astronomy. Of course, it’s not just these superspectacular celes tial events that capture our imaginations. Sometimes it’s the simplest and most common. For me, just gaz ing quietly into the stars of summertime is enough to evoke fond memories of childhood, when my fascina tion with the universe was just beginning to bloom. Quite a lot has occurred in the heavens since 1992, and I’m still amused to recall the column’s humble beginnings with the San Diego Union-Tribune. While considering whether to publish “Stargazers,” my edi tor asked if I honestly thought there would be enough happening up there to sustain a weekly column.

Some of my most memorable cosmic events of the past three decades have been standing every year in the frozen outback of Alaska as the colorful curtains of the aurora borealis dance magically among the glistening stars, watching a total solar eclipse over the ancient Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat as Buddhist monks beat drums to scare away the sun-eating drag on, and staring slack-jawed at the iridescent bluegreen tail of Comet Hyakutake arching more than halfway across the sky!

“That would be an excellent time to know you are buying a home that does not have a potentially deadly issue asso ciated with it. It’s not better later on, after someone moves in that they will destroy their nice house and lawn and open the street, but because they may be doing the work anyway that’s a great time for a homeowner to learn if they have a source of lead in drinking water attached to the house – if so, they can remedy it,” he explained. Suozzi noted that one of the plumb ers reported that there were partial lead line replacements, where the existing lead line was only cut under the foun dation of the house and the lead portion of it was left running from the water main at the street, under the lawn and up to the foundation. He suggested that Garden City strengthen its laws and municipal permit processes to disal low this situation “which disguises the problem.”Suozzi warned that there’s also a danger in putting two dissimilar metals (lead and copper) together for the line; it can result in galvanic corrosion. “That’s a huge red flag. Because we know the dangers of lead, there should not be such a portion they are able to keep there,” he said. Schectman agreed and said if the village were to allow people to ‘get away with savings’ such as the partial line replacement, they would continue in that egregious direction. Joe Todaro, consultant to the vil lage from H2M Architects + Engineers, noted that New York City has a regu lation that any repairs on an existing lead service line can’t include a par tial repair; the whole service line must come out. That would preempt the situ ation Schechtman and Suozzi discussed. Todaro added that sometimes the confusion can come about in the dualstep permitting process for most munic ipalities including Garden City, involv ing a local building department and the department of public works. “They need to be more synchronized across communities. Partial lead ser vice lines are much more critical in the first six months they operate because of the internal operations resulting in contamination. I know the village is working towards getting all homeown ers and plumbers to take the entire lines out,” he Estatessaid.resident Rich Catalano asked that the information be shared on local Facebook pages. The village’s official page cannot, however, link to such out side private Facebook accounts. Village Administrator Suozzi said the village has engaged with many res idents through traditional, direct com munication via email and phone calls. There were hundreds of letters also sent to households within the Mott Section of the village’s east, any homes from Stewart Avenue up to Old Country Road between Clinton Road and Washington Road. Consultants H2M Architects + Engineers also dropped off leaflets to every east household with the details on the water testing program – reaching approximately 833 homes in the east. Todaro explained that the 168 homes tested were part of the 833 that were contacted, and then other households requested the lead testing on their own. Out of that outreach, 168 samples of water from the Mott Section houses were analyzed for lead contamination using the three bottle system. Suozzi says the three bottle system is the new and most effective way of testing the water as advised by the EPA. “If any residents want to contact me, through the various email addresses or my village email – rsuozzi@gardenc ityny.net – and they want to conduct the testing, we are still distributing the bottles,” he advised. In July there was another “resam pling” of 66 homes’ water from the vil lage’s east, as that was under the vil lage’s purview of the New York State Lead and Copper Rule, for sampling of homes with lead service lines. Because Garden City has a higher concentration of homes in this category, instead of sampling from 30 homes, the Nassau County Department of Health and New York State requested the village test water from a higher number (66). Those test results were sent to the county health department a few weeks ago.
Schechtman told the EAB members that he read about the prior meeting topics of ‘Lead in Garden City drinking water’ and lead water service pipelines for many houses in the village. Schechtman reported that it was dif ficult to find out more about the local Environmental Commission, and what its charter is, “plus how the EAB inter acts with the Village Board of Trustees or in general.” He added that there should be a more feasible way of pro viding the Zoom links for EAB meetings
From page 1 See page 46
Board seeks improvements in community outreach website and even material submitted to The Garden City News. EAB members as well as the public on Zoom and in-person for the July 20 meeting offered their input on ways to get more residents engaged. First, Board member John Reilly said there are two ideas in play – beginning with getting more people in Garden City to participate with Environmental Board topics, whether that is with meeting attendance or in other forms of feed back. Second, he noted that information posted online and especially on the vil lage website should be easily accessible and the EAB can work on ways of facil itating residents’ access to the website content.“Weneed ways to let people know the information is there so they can get access to it. Reilly also commented on the days when people in Garden City would pick up the paper to see a photo of their children who might have been involved in sports or academic programs that were highlighted. In that case opening the paper to other sections was effec tive, but the internet and prevalence of smartphones has shifted attention to otherTrusteechannels.Carter Flanagan asked for places online the EAB should post infor mation to, and other ways to circulate information on when the EAB meet ings take place (they will be meeting in Village Hall on Wednesday, August 17 at 7:30 Participatingp.m.).
EAB member Leo Stimmler said the village should encourage Garden City’s homeowners to retest their drinking water once any lead service lines are replaced.Suozzi said he knows of the village asking the homeowners who have com pleted lead line replacements to retest their water – with 39 permits issued from Public Works, for road openings related to lead line replacements from January 1 to July 12, 2022. In addition a few took place last October, into the late fall and early winter. None of the village’s recent updates on these tests included the free, pilot New York State water testing kits that became available last year, as great ly higher numbers of village residents have had that done. Administrator Suozzi commented that the County Department of Health may have statis tics on the total homes tested in Garden City. Todaro said H2M has not received any data from the county from this New York State testing pilot program since February.
42 NewsCityGardenThe202212,Augustriday,F have to sign a document stating they were notified of the existing lines. Administrator Suozzi believes this addition in the village’s permit process – a two-step series for Village Hall, with the Department of Public Works receiving and administering the street opening applications and the Building Department receiving applications for the physical lead water line replace ments – would create a record of line status, so no new homebuyers enter a situation where the issue was not docu mented previously. “If we, in a piecemeal way, can attack the open windows and doors that we have with our village’s existing (per mitting) processes and make them more fruitful that is part of a solution,” Suozzi noted.Participating over Zoom, Stratford Avenue resident Matt “Schecky” Schectman offered some considerations for the Environmental Advisory Board. He said the lab that tested his new con struction home’s water noted that the level of lead was alarmingly high, and the highest that this lab had ever tested. “It’s a consideration, for what (as a village) we can do in permitting and code-based because there had to be per mits and a whole new meter, the labs advised that in cases where a house is flipped they will see high lead levels as traditionally they do not replace the lead feed line to a house, they would just cut off the end of it where they have to in order to remedy the new construc tion inside the house. In cutting into an existing lead line you would greatly exacerbate the problem, because the grinding and cutting into it reduces mineralization that may have been in the line offering some protection. In my case it was shocking – cutting into the line could even mean turbulent lead is feeding back into the water main, down stream to other people. It would be a serious concern if in cutting the existing lead line it does more damage than infil trating the lead into my home’s service line but it would be done systemwide,”
Schechtman said. He cautioned that the village, through its permitting process es and regulations, should be proac tively examining modifications to any existing lead water service lines. He added that his lawn has a dry well for gutter runoff (rainwater) and environmentally, the code has shifted towards this instead of having rainwater collected in storm drains. Schechtman advised that these situations indicate a significant amount of digging and per mitting was done before his house was completed, and he’s displeased with the builder. At this point he’s doing explor atory inspections to see if at the curb his water service line is still lead.
Schectman told the EAB and Village Administrator Suozzi that when a homebuyer is paying millions of dollars for their Garden City property “in the grand scheme of things, $7,000 to $12,000 to redo the lead pipe is rather minor.”

We’re ready for the 2022–2023 Religious School program. Art projects are part of every student’s experience.Everyone is looking forward to braiding their own challah bread this year.
With only one month of summer left, the Garden City Jewish Center is planning some exciting changes and options for its Religious School program, which begins on Sunday, September 11, 2022. Having found that students required more flexibility with their schedules, the GCJC is offering its more advanced students, “Seniors” in grades 6–8, the option to attend the Children’s Sunday Service (8:50 a.m. – 9:40 a.m.) either in-person or via Zoom. In addition, those students may continue their Hebrew, Ethics and History studies either in-person or individually on Zoom with Rabbi StephenStudentsGoodman.inthe Junior (Grades 4–5) and Primary (Grades 1–3) groups will continue to attend the in-per son program, with Art experiences included in class or as an enrich ment option. In keeping with helping busy families with crowded sports and club schedules, the children in grades 1-8 will have their classes completed by 10:50 a.m. This year, the GCJC is happy to report that a weekly PreK/K class will be offered, free of charge for Congregation members! Taught by Carolyn Hoera, the one-hour pro gram will feature social interaction, tabletop games like Lego, blocks, puz zles, play dough, art projects, music with guitar and rhythm instruments, and a story time. There will be an introduction to Jewish culture and holidays. The one-hour PreK/K pro gram will take place after other stu dents are dismissed, on Sunday from 10:50 a.m. – 11:50 a.m. Finally, be on the lookout for the return of our popular in-per son Children’s Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services and activi ties, later in September and early October. Challah bread-making will be back by popular demand during the September 26th Rosh Hashanah morning service! Improvements in community outreach than everyone individually contacting Village Clerk Karen Altman to request the link. The village shifted from providing the Zoom links to municipal meetings directly on its website in 2020, a few months into the COVID-19 pandemic, because ‘Zoom bombers’ were crashing the meetings with some vulgar language.Schechtman said the EAB could start with having “a more obvious link” for interested res idents, as well as interactions with Facebook users. He said the village and EAB can stop short of “being alarmist” about postings online and advising residents of the upcoming envi ronmental topics and meeting dates/times, but a better set of communications should be used.“The Village of Garden City website, though it’s pretty, is often not the most naviga ble. The Facebook groups are great for public engagement but I do not recall ever see ing any post specifically from the Environmental Advisory Board. That would be very helpful to see, with the notice of an upcoming EAB meeting and what was previously discussed or what will be discussed,” Schechtman noted. Trustee Carter Flanagan thanked him for an online post that received many responses and was shared with dozens of people.Aquestion on the village’s web presence was directed to Village Clerk Karen Altman, who explained that while the village and its municipal board and commissions can cre ate and post material for the online and social media plat forms, legal reasons prohibit an engagement and back-andforth type of communication online. The residents would have a way to provide input, but commenting on village posts is not encouraged or solicited by theEABmunicipality.member Reilly explained that the Village of Garden City is currently hav ing its new website worked on, and it’s expected to be live and operational by late this year. Over Zoom, Schechtman said the option for the Village of Garden City to make more frequent and informational posts – with the comments dis abled on them – is a way of cir cumventing the issue of going back and forth with the public. “We see enough of how com mon threads can run awry, but a regular posting of tonight’s and every monthly meeting as a reminder and for the meeting information would be helpful to residents. I understand redo ing a website is a major under taking so it may take until December, as it’s a process. But as someone who has worked in technology, I suggest there be a more forward and current events-driven delivery of con tent,” he said.
