Later in the day, Stewart School hosted its meet and greet in a similar fashion. Stewart students met their new princi pal, Keri Hand, and new assistant principal, Rachel Lindsey, outside the school. They also had fun on the school’s two playgrounds, played games with friends and participated in arts and crafts.

The Garden City Board of Trustees meeting held on Thursday, August 18 featured over an hour of public comments pertaining to the future of the village’s National Register of Historic Places-listed St. Paul’s main building, and the process by which the Village of Garden City will come to a decision on the site’s future use. A lifelong village resident noted the packed crowd for the board’s August meeting and said most people in the audience attended due to the Board’s dis cussion on setting a timeline for a referendum on St. Paul’s future. But he said more village resi dents attended the concert at the Gazebo adjacent to Village Hall that Thursday evening, “because people do not know about this.”

Prior to the first day of school, Stewart and Stratford students from the Garden City Public Schools and their families visited their respective school buildings for a special meet and greet with building administrators. The event took place outdoors on Aug. 24. At Stratford School, students had the opportunity to meet their new assistant prin cipal, Lauren Quezada, and catch up with Principal Christopher Hartigan while enjoy ing the sunshine and playing with their peers.

The point was raised that most residents of Garden City today are young families raising children, and the older generations have kept informed with traditional means such as with the Village Board’s monthly or biweekly meetings. The board listened as concerns over the lack of informa tion provided to all residents were put forth.

It’s been a difficult couple of years, especially for young kids. But when we look back on this time in a few decades, what will we see in this community?
The new booster shot also targets the Omicron variant, so that may reduce a possible winter surge, if substantial numbers of people take it. Everyone is sick of the pandemic - we get it. But while it’s difficult to say exactly what marks the end of the pandemic, somehow this feels like it. Unfortunately the virus still causes ill nesses and deaths, but as a society we’ve come to accept that it is now endemic.

To the Editor: It has been stated and written that the fate of St. Paul’s lies in a commu nity vote. At the August 18th Board of Trustees meeting, village trustee Mary Carter Flanagan commented,” I think it would be very irresponsible for us as a board to leave tonight’s meeting without at least setting a deadline to receive information so that we can set about going through that information and drafting a ballot as well as com piling all the relevant information that needs to go out to residents so they have everything needed to cast an educated vote on this important issue.” I couldn’t agree with her more but it seems that not every board member is online to follow the will of the people. During the next board meeting taking place on September 15 each board mem ber should answer the question: Will you abide by the results of the commu nity vote or not? I seem to remember that the Constitution of this country begins with, “We the people” which is the basis of our Democratic Republic, and in a democracy, it is the right of the people to make their voices heard by voting on important issues that impact their daily lives. No one should have the right to take that away from us.Bob Orosz
Is this the end of the era?
To the Editor: The last Board of Trustees meeting produced two bombshells. First, an attack on Board members by the Mayor’s Committee on St. Paul’s in response to the proposal by two Trustees to set clear deadlines relative to submissions by the Committee and other groups such as FDEM and to set a date for resident vote, and second, the revelation that the so called “referendum” is not to be because it was not legal. Instead, it will be a “community vote”, meaning that the vote will not be binding on the board. Then Trustee Bruce A. Torino in a letter to the Garden City News last week announced he will not necessarily abide by the results of the community vote. Moving Forward Despite the Mayor’s repeated state ments that targeted the residents’ vote for November or early December, Trustee Torino expressed his view that the Committee should have unlimited time to finish its work. If Mr. Torino gave a contractor $23,500 (the amount granted to the Committee) to renovate his house, would he give the contractor carte blanche regarding how long the project could take? Reader, would you? At the last Board meeting he, an attorney, mentioned that court matters often get adjourned as a basis for not giving the Committee dead lines. Well, obviously adjournments are given but such emanate from a set point start date. So far, Trustee Torino has refused to consider a set point from which the Committee would have as its goal line. Unfettered by any deadlines, the Committee still appar ently has much work to do. For the Board not to impose reasonable bench marks for progress and completion of the Committee’s mission would con stitute unacceptable business practice. Hopefully, at the next Board meeting, reasonable progress will be established by the Board. Community Vote So far, Trustee Torino is entitled to his stated opinions. However, because Board will be fashioning the questions for the next community vote what could his concerns be? Having framed the questions, no one on the Board can legitimately quibble or quarrel with the result of the community vote unless fraud or illegality occurred. At the next Board meeting, this needs to be clarified.
In those dark days of the spring of 2020 it felt like the world was going to be forever changed. From our empty office building we could hear constant ambu lance sirens as they headed through empty streets to Winthrop Hospital. But at the same time, we also heard from people who organized meals for health care workers, and drives for PPE for essential workers. Whatever else we learned from that time, we learned that as a community we will step up and take care of each other in emergencies.

AAA Northeast launched its annual “School’s Open - Drive Carefully” pro gram at the Stewart School in Garden City. The program alerts drivers to be extra careful behind the wheel as chil dren end their summer vacation and return to school.
AAA Northeast, the Garden City Police Department and the Garden City Public Schools partner to promote safe roads, especially during back-to-school season each year. Members of all three entities came together outside Stewart School to install a “School’s Open –Drive Carefully” sign on the fence fac ing Stewart Avenue. Drivers should be particularly cau tious in school areas keeping their speed at or below posted limits and being pre pared to stop, on both sides of the street, for school buses with flashing red lights as required by New York State law.
AAA’s annual “School’s Open – Drive Carefully” campaign is conducted with local government and police agencies.
“The help and dedication we get from police departments in our territory adds to the effectiveness of our ‘School’s Open’ campaign,” said Gerri DiSalvo, public affairs specialist. “We sincerely appreciate the efforts of Commissioner Jackson, the entire Garden City Police Department and the Garden City Public Schools in helping to increase safety for all students,” DiSalvo said.

Historical Society contest celebrates Apostle House birthday
Estates POA to hold special meeting Sept. 14
The year is 1872 and Alexander Turney Stewart’s vision for Garden City is well underway. Fast forward 150 years, to 2022, and The Garden City Historical Society (TGCHS) is in the midst of planning a birthday celebra tion for its museum building, one of the remaining A.T. Stewart-era Apostle Houses — a structure that was moved not once, but twice and is currently undergoing a top to bottom restoration. In honor of the 150th birthday, TGCHS is having a contest to build a three-dimensional model of any historic Garden City building. What better way to celebrate than to reflect on Stewart’s vision for Garden City and the histor ic buildings brought to life because of him — St. Paul’s School, The Cathedral School of St. Mary’s, The Cathedral of the Incarnation and the host of resi dential historic homes still standing? Maybe your house is celebrating its 150th birthday also! The rules are simple … stop by the A.T. Stewart Exchange (rear entrance of the A.T. Stewart Museum at 109 11th Street), pick up a 12”x 18” base for your model (your model must sit on the base provided) and get started. Use whatever medium you’d like to create your masterpiece: popsicle sticks, tooth picks, pasta shapes, build ing blocks, 3D printer, clay, maybe even gingerbread.Enterasan individual, a family or a team.Drop your masterpiece back off at The Exchange between October 10 – 14 for judging. Winners will be announced at the celebration on October 15 and prizes will be awarded! Remember to be creative and above all have fun!

The Estates Property Owners’ Association (Estates POA) will hold a Special Meeting on September 14, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Senior Center located at 6 Golf Club Lane. All members of the Estates POA are strong ly encouraged to attend this important meeting as well as any resident of the Estates who is interested in becoming a member.Thefirst item on the agenda is to vote on amendments to the Estates POA By-Laws, the primary objective of which is to provide for an open prima ry process to determine trustee candi dates for the positions of Village Mayor, Village Board of Trustees and Board of Education Trustees. As previously announced, under the new process all residents interested in serving as a trustee will participate in an open primary election in their sec tion of the village, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, January 17, 2023. For exam ple, all Estates residents will be eligible to vote in a primary that will be held by the Estates POA and the winner(s) of which will be the Estates candidate(s) in village elections as to any open posi tions for Village Mayor, Village Board and/or the Board of Education. Each of the four POAs will be holding primary contests. The candidates and voters are not required to be members of any POA. The POAs are adopting this new open and transparent primary process to encourage more residents to con sider board service. In addition to the open primaries, the POAs are planning to hold informational Town Halls and Meet & Greets for the residents to get to know the candidates. Other important updates will be pro vided at the Special Meeting includ ing: 1) status of the landscaping along the Main Line and plans to modify the “islands’ across from the Merillon Avenue Station; 2) updates on the important issue of lead service lines in the village; and 3) the status of St. Paul’s.Refreshments will be served and there will be an informal wine tasting. GCPD: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”
If you are attending a Labor Day gathering:
• If you are planning on driv ing, avoid drinking.
“We understand everyone wants to enjoy the holiday weekend”, said Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson, “but we want them to do it responsibly. Beyond risking personal freedom and safety, driving impaired puts lives in danger."
“Our commit ment to every resident and visitor of this Village means we are increasing patrols during the holiday period to help ensure the summer does not end with death or injury," he added. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that one person is killed about every 45 seconds in a drunk driving crash, totaling 11,000 lives lost each year. Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson states “during this initiative, the Department will be deploying addi tional enforcement patrols on Village roadways, strictly enforcing all DWI laws. These patrols play an important part in preventing holiday tragedies that seem far too common”.
• Ensure sober drivers or alter native modes of transportation are set up in advance for guests who are planning to drink alcoholic beverages.
8 NewsCityGardenThe2022,2Septemberriday,F
• If you see someone who you believe is driving impaired, call police.
• Do not text, use a cellphone that is not hands-free, or drive dis tracted.
• Take away the keys from anyone who is thinking of driving impaired.
Garden City Police Department will be watching for impaired driving through Labor Day Weekend as part of the National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization. This initiative will be enhanced by funds provided by the Nassau County Traffic Safety STOP DWI Program and the New York State Governor's Traffic Safety Committee.
If you are hosting a Labor Day gathering:
• Remember, you can be held liable if someone you served alcohol to ends up in an impaired-driving crash.
On August 12, 2022, Commissioner Jackson, representing the Garden City Police Department and the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, attended a NY DMV Press Conference at the LIE Welcome Center with other Police Leaders to inform the public of the dangers and consequences of driv ing while drunk or drugged and the Labor Day weekend initiative.
• Do not let a friend drive if you think they are impaired.
• Have contact information for local taxi companies readily available.
• Consider using public trans portation, call a taxi or use a rideshare service if you do not have a sober driver.
• Designate your sober driver in advance and give that person your car keys.

Just before Labor Day weekend, the St. Joseph School Family Association continued the tra dition of “Popsicles with the Principals” as a special way for the students in nursery, pre-K and kindergarten to meet and greet the school leadership team, Ms. Marcela Chavez and Ms. Karen Wolf. During this fun event, students and their parents from the large SJS early childhood program were invited to do crafts, have snacks, listen to a book from Ms. Chavez and Ms. Wolf, and of course beat that August heat with a delicious popsicle. While parents mingled and students played, the excitement of a brand new school year swirled in the air!

So, I looked into it, employing a team of researchers working around the clock for months and months. The goal was to determine if this couple pictured above is a “historic couple” in Garden City. Here’s what we learned... Jack Robinson and Althea Franz were both born in Garden City, with Jack being a few years older than Althea. They both graduated from Garden City High School in the late 1940s (back at the original G.C. High which is now the Middle School). They got married in the 1950s and settled into their home on Garden Street, raising several children there. Today, Jack and Althea are still on Garden Street and in their 90s. So, are they the only couple in the history of our Village to have both been born in Garden City, both graduate from Garden City High School and after over 90 years still residing in Garden City in the same house they moved into after getting married? Well, taking all of this into consideration and with the power vested in me by some vague authority, I hereby declare Jack and Althea Robinson to indeed be an official “historic Garden City couple.” (Now if you know of another couple that fits all of the above criteria - please don’t tell me as I’ve already written this column!)
That is Jack and Althea Robinson. I took that photo at the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Pineapple Ball in May of 2012. You may remember Althea as the Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce for almost 40 years. For over half that time I did quite a few things for the Chamber (more like a few hundred things!) Today, Althea is still active in the G.C. Rotary Club. I spoke there not too long ago and Althea mentioned to me an interesting anecdote in her own subtle way, “Well, you know John...”

A few months ago, things looked pretty good for Republicans in the midterms. President Joe Biden’s public approval ratings were low, a decline in standing that began with the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan. This was followed by a spike in inflation that could cred ibly be tied to Mr. Biden’s spending programs, and which was particular ly manifested in surging gas prices. The approval decline led to a narra tive that Mr. Biden was an elderly and out of touch leader, unengaged with the nation’s problems. In addition, Mr. Biden’s agen da seemed hopelessly stalled in Congress. In light of the usual losses of the party holding the White House, and Mr. Biden’s low approval rat ings, there was talk of a red wave, with Republicans easily retaking the House and winning enough seats in the Senate to control the chamber. However, as discussed in last week’s column, things have gotten somewhat better for the Democrats in the last few weeks. Inflation, while still very high, began to subside a lit tle. The swing vote in the Senate, Joe Manchin, decided to work with the Administration after all and some thing called the Inflation Reduction Act was passed. The legislation included a few tax hikes on business es, increased funding for the Internal Revenue Service, a number of cli mate change related provisions, and prescription drug relief for seniors. Democrats were also helped by the Supreme Court’s Dobbs abortion rul ing, which, however justified, ener gized Democratic voters. Mr. Biden’s approval ratings improved to the low forties, and polls generally got a little better for the ApparentlyDemocrats.sensingsome momen tum, Democrats and President Biden have begun what seems to be a coun terattackRelying on a tenuous “national emergency” provision of legislation passed following the 9/11 attack, the Administration issued an executive order that “forgives” up to $10,000 of federal student debt for those earn ing less than $125,000 ($250,000 for families) and $20,000 for Pell grant recipients. While no doubt popular among parts of Mr. Biden’s base, estimates are that this program will run up between $300 and $600 billion in new debt. There are also obvious equity questions of why people who didn’t go to college, didn’t run up debt or already paid off their debt should subsidize those with large balances.Second, Mr. Biden is launching an attack on Republicans as a “threat to the rule of law”. In speeches this week, Mr. Biden is claiming that the January 6 riot and criticism of the FBI by some Republicans, togeth er with the GOP’s general opposi tion to strong gun control measures such as an assault weapon ban, mean that his party is the one favoring law enforcement. He talks about a “battle for the soul of the nation”, and accuses Republicans of putting democracy in peril. My personal view is that this counterattack is a bit problemat ic. First, the student loan bailout may be mistimed in light of continu ing difficult economic conditions.

As for the theme that the Democrats are the law and order party and that Republicans are put ting democracy in peril, voters are likely to suspect that these issues are something of a smokescreen, in light of the bad economy and prior sup port of defunding the police by some Democrats. In addition, Republicans will argue that there are in fact seri ous questions of disparate treatment between Democrats and Republicans by federal law enforcement. In short, I think that the midterms are most likely to be decided by issues in place before the Democrats commenced their counterattack.

Federal Reserve Bank Chairman Jerome Powell has made it clear that he intends to fight inflation further by a number of interest rate hikes, which will almost certainly weaken the economy. Already Mr. Powell’s intentions have roiled the stock mar ket, something very important to Americans with 401(k) plans. Oil producing nations have already started to discuss production quotas, which easily can lead to even higher prices at the pump. Certainly the potential inflationary effect of the massive new student loan bailout will give the GOP further ammuni tion in blaming the President for the continuing hard times.

Labor Day Patrols: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over
The Village put out a Request For Proposals (RFP) for a comparative analysis for building alteration and adaptive reuse versus demolition of the St. Paul’s Complex. The RFPs were posted by the Village August 1-5, 2022. An extension was given until August 10, 2022. A second extension was given until August 22, 2022. Four companies responded to the RFPs: Acheson Doyle Partners Architects, P.C.; 5D Architecture & Engineering; Marx/Okubo Associates, Inc.; and Westerman Construction Co. Inc. Westerman Construction Co. Inc. was the lowest qualified proposal and was submitted to the Board of Trustees with all the other proposals received per the Request for Proposals ( RFP ). The engagement of Westerman Construction Co. Inc., an independent cost estimator, will provide estimated project costs for adaptive reuse, dem olition and facadism, as well as help establish a date for a resident poll by the Mayor’s St. Paul’s Committee. Their proposals are available for review on the Village website, www. gardencityny.net.

The Garden City Police Department will be watching for impaired driv ing through Labor Day Weekend as part of the National Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization. This initiative will be enhanced by funds provided by the Nassau County Traffic Safety STOP DWI Program and the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. “We understand everyone wants to enjoy the holiday weekend,” said Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson, “but we want them to do it responsibly. Beyond risking personal freedom and safety, driving impaired puts lives in danger. Our commitment to every resident and visitor of this Village means we are increasing patrols during the holiday period to help ensure the summer does not end with death or injury.”

The Incorporated Village of Garden City found elevated levels of lead in drinking water in some homes/ buildings. Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and children 6 years and younger. H2M, the Village’s water consultant, continues to perform biweek ly sampling at entry points for lead and other corrosion parameters. Compliance with the Lead and Copper Rule action levels is based on the 90th percentile; the concentration of lead and copper must be less than or equal to the action level in at least 90 per cent of the samples collected. Recent sampling of 65 homes in the Village exceeded the action level, which is 15 parts per billion (ppb). Plans and specifications were sent to the Nassau County Department of Health for interim corrosion control treatment on August 16, 2022, using 55-gallon drums to be utilized for orthophos phate at each site. Orthophosphate forms a protective coating inside water lines and household plumbing. It is a proven water treatment method to prevent corrosion and reduce the amount of lead leaching into drinking water. “We are trying to get the orthophosphate sys tem in place before pumping season ends,” Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi said. This week, residents will receive a letter from the Village of Garden City urging them to test their water, take necessary precautions, such as using water filters, and replace their lead service lines. If a resident wants to find out if they have a lead service line, the Village will send out a self-evalu ation form to determine the material of the service entering their house. Residents may also request that the Village sample their water. We will drop off and pick up sample bottles for your use.
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that one person is killed about every 45 seconds in a drunk driv ing crash, totaling 11,000 lives lost each year. During this initiative, the cveneziale@gardencityny.net Mayor Cosmo Veneziale page 46

I march myself from the Princesse Royal, the ship that has been my floating hotel for the eightday BoatBikeTours’ Bruges to Amsterdam bike trip the few steps from where we are docked to the free ferry to Amsterdam’s Central Station and into Amsterdam’s his toric city center and on to the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. The level of service, luxury and elegance in this five-star hotel makes you feel you are staying in a palace, and frankly, it was, as I soon learn on the hotel’s daily tour. I always seek out historic hotels when I travel because they tend to be so much more interesting, so con nected to place, so full of personality, character and yes, authenticity, but rarely have I stayed in a hotel that played such an integral role in a nation’s history. A hotel only since 1992, the orig inal buildings and tower that have been repurposed for The Grand were built in 1411 and actually were two convents – one on the northern side and one on the southern side, with canals on both. In 1578, with the success of William of Orange’s revolt against Catholic Spain, Protestantism swept the Netherlands and Amsterdam. The two convents were given to the city. The northern side was empty for a time, but the southern build ing became the Royal residence –the Princenhof (still the name). The Maria de’ Medici, Queen of France, and William of Orange himself stayed here at some point. In 1652, after a fire at Dam Square destroyed the building where the Council met, they moved into the northern part of the building, which served as the Council Chamber for three years until Dam Square was renovated (the room is still set up as a Council Chamber).

In 1655, the powerful Dutch East India Trading Company made this their headquarters. The company, which set up trade, exploration and colonization around the globe, func tioned as a military power, govern ment, and even agricultural pro ducer and helped make this small nation a global power, from 1602 to 1800. (A little research reveals the Dutch had an advantage in resourc es because they were on the cutting edge of capitalism. The Dutch East India Company had a more success ful strategy because of sound money, an efficient tax system and a system of public debt by which the govern ment could borrow from its citizens at low interest rates.

In 1925, the Wedding Chamber was painted with a most magnificent Art Deco series of murals that our guide, Donna van der Heul, of guest relations, relates, tell the story of a couple who meets, are seduced in a sneaky way (symbolized by a snake), stay true, meet each other (there is a little flame between their legs), become engaged (the flame becomes bigger), a wedding show ing the happy couple. Another panel shows the couple with a child with a flame of her own, and another panel shows them as an old couple, still together. (We have to rush through the chamber because a wedding is getting underway shortly).
We visit the beautifully decorated Oriole Garden Bistro where there is a mural that was painted in 1949 when the building was City Hall.

In terms of history, the Constitution was drafted by/at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and ratified by 2/3 of the states (as provided in the Constitution and became effective in 1789). The Constitution provided for a national government of three inde pendent branches: executive, judicial, and legislature. One of the conflicts that arose at that time concerned the makeup of the legislature. The dispute was resolved by the so-called Great Compromise, establishing the present arrangement whereby the states are equally represented in the Senate while the House of Representatives is repre sented in proportion to their popula tions. The Constitution was signed by 39 delegates (a great trivia question). I recognized only four signatures: Ben Franklin (PA), Alexander Hamilton (NY), James Madison (VA), and George Washington (VA). The ratification pro cess brought on intense debate and con flict. This was resolved when it was agreed to amend the Constitution with the inclusion of a Bill of Rights. A total of 42 amendments were proposed but were subsequently reduced to 12. Two (2) failed ratification and the remaining became the first 10 amendments, today referred to as the aforementioned Bill of Rights. Unquestionably, these were major and significant additions to pre vent government abridgement and to insure the fundamental rights of indi viduals. Here is what I would consider some of the key amendments. Read #10 care fully.

Amendment 19 (1920):
“The right of citizens of the United States who are 18 years of age or older to vote shall not be denied or abridged…” Exit the objectivity of the above mate rial. Enter my take on the Constitution. I believe the intent of the framers was to protect the rights of the people, and not the government and/or elected officials. Unfortunately, most officials and some of the Justices have chosen to ignore the intent and instead reinterpret many of the laws of the land. The framers obvi ously were concerned that an expand ed government would encroach upon the rights of individuals. An objective review of the Constitution clearly indi cates their concern that government expansion would adversely affect the rights of individuals. How lucky we are to be Americans. As I noted at the top, everyone should take the time to read our Constitution. It is a brilliant document that has for tunately and understandably withstood the test of time. I frequently get questions from soonto-be retirees who have heard about a “family maximum” that applies to Social Security benefits, and they are afraid that rule will reduce the benefits they are due as a couple.
A: Don’t worry. As I said in the be ginning of this column, this family max imum stuff doesn’t affect a husband and wife getting benefits. You’ll note the rule book section your accountant sent you refers to a “PIA.” That stands for “prima ry insurance amount,” which is essen tially your full retirement age amount. That amount can never be more than a 100% rate. You are going to get a high er monthly benefit amount (up to 32% more) because you are delaying filing for Social Security until age 70. But your PIA remains at that 100% rate. Your wife is going to get a 50% rate. So, the most a husband and dependent wife can get in basic (PIA) combined ben efits is 150%. (His 100% PIA rate and her 50% spousal rate.) And that 150% rate does not exceed the lowest family max rate (which is 150%), so a husband and wife can never be subject to the family maximum.
A: As I’ve explained in this column, the family maximum rules do not ap ply to married couples. And there is no “marriage penalty” associated with So cial Security. You mentioned a wife be ing limited to half of her husband’s Social Security. That would be a wife who does not have her own Social Security benefit, or who has a very small benefit on her own record and is therefore eligible to receive a dependent wife’s benefit from her husband’s account. Those spousal benefits are limited to the 50% rate, but you and your wife are each getting your own retirement benefit: $3,444 for you and $3,100 for your wife. So combined, you will get $6,544 in monthly Social Se curity benefits.
The family maximum formula for Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) benefits is based on a benefi ciary’s primary insurance amount (PIA). The PIA is a beneficiary’s basic Social Security benefit amount before adjustments for retirement age, earn ings, and other factors. SSA calculates the family maximum using a formula. Ultimately, that formula yields a max imum for each family that is between 150% and 188% of the worker’s basic Social Security benefit, or PIA.” So according to my accountant and this rulebook entry, if our fami ly maximum ends up being less than 182%, they are somehow going to cut our benefits. So now I’m really wor ried. Why bother waiting until 70 to get increased benefits if they are just going to reduce our checks because of this family maximum business?”
But there are two things we’ve heard about Social Security that scare us. We’ve been told there is some kind of maximum that applies to what we will be able to receive, and we’ve also been told there is a marriage penalty with Social Security that limits what my wife can get to one-half of my benefit rate. Please help us understand this.

CORRECTION TO MY BOOK: Before I finish out this discussion of family maximum confusion, I’ve got to correct an error I discovered about this topic in my little Social Security guide book called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” In the “Benefits for Children” chapter of that book, when discussing the family maximum, I gave an example where a retiree took reduced benefits at 62 so that his teenage daughters could claim benefits on his record. And I said that it was his reduced benefit that gets figured into the family maximum com putation. But actually, it is his full ben efit rate that is used, even though he’s getting a reduced amount. But still, the message of this column remains the same. When we are talking about just a husband and wife getting benefits, the family maximum never comes into play. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the an swers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www. creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book COPYRIGHToutlets.2022 CREATORS.COM
CROSSWORD PUZZLE
YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY Family Maximum Doesn’t Apply to Couples Answers on page 2
BY TOM MARGENAU
Q: I am waiting until age 70 to take my Social Security so that I will get 132% of my Social Security benefit. Then my wife, who was a homemak er all her life, will file on my record and she will get 50% of my benefit. So combined, we will get 182% of my Social Security benefit. Our accoun tant said that will be a problem for us because Social Security rules set the family maximum at somewhere between 150% and 188% of my benefit rate. The actual percentage depends on factors I don’t quite understand. The accountant sent me this clipping from what he said is the Social Secu rity rulebook. “RULES FOR RETIREMENT AND SURVIVOR BENEFITS
Q: I am taking my benefits at full retirement age. I am married to a woman who hasn’t worked very much, so she is going to be getting half of my Social Security. But I also have an ex-wife who hasn’t remar ried and didn’t work very much ei ther, so she will be getting half of my Social Security, too. So, I’m going to get 100%, my wife will get 50% and my ex will also get 50%. That’s 200% combined and that exceeds what I’ve been told is the 150% maximum that can be paid to my family. So how do they make these adjustments to get down to the 150% rate? A: No adjustments will be needed. Any benefits paid to an ex-wife are just “add-on” benefits. They don’t affect the benefits you and your current wife are due, and they also don’t affect this family maximum business.
So, here is the message of this col umn: The family maximum rules do not apply to a husband and wife getting So cial Security benefits all by themselves. These maximum rules only come into play when children are involved. That usually means cases involving children getting benefits on a deceased parent’s account. Or it can mean limiting benefits to families of someone getting Social Se curity disability benefits. But it also can occasionally apply to retirees who still have minor children at home. When this does happen, it’s frequently because a retiree has an adult child who has been disabled since birth. But again, the focus of today’s column is the scenario of a husband and wife with no minor or disabled adult children at home. And to repeat, the family maximum rules do not apply to them. Here are ques tions from readers about this issue.
Q: My wife and I both plan to take our benefits at age 70 at the end of the year. I am estimated to get $3,444 per month and my wife will get $3,100.
The Inflation Reduction Act (H.R. 5376), introduced by Senators Chuck Schumer, (D-NY) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by President Biden on August 16. It became a com promise for the much larger Build Back Better plan, which was introduced to assist in fighting inflation, increased climate/global warming, and certain medical cost issues. One of the key issues was having all corporations pay a minimum of 15% income tax. This is good news for homeowners who might have previously been concerned about additional income taxes or possibly the loss or change in our interest deduction on primary and secondary home mort gages (within certain limitations, ask your CPA), (reduced from $1,000,000 to $750,000 through 2025 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017) which has been the most popular deduction. It should also have very little or no effect on REITs or small-scale devel opers. Other benefits are clean energy credits from your utilities and further massive tax rebates on the installation of solar and renewable energy, commu nity solar, and wind farms. This will also enhance homeownership and real estate investment going forward while reducing energy costs which dramati cally increased in 2022.

Political climate, legislation and interest rates’ affect on real estate
However, there is a huge problem that the legislation hasn’t addressed, the historically low housing supply affecting American families. Higher interest rates cause higher costs reduc ing the incentive for building multifam ily units, also placing more restrictive and higher energy code requirements and inflated labor costs have slowed things down. Currently, when the U.S needs more housing, and with the higher financing costs, the market has cooled off substantially in many states, and developers and builders are being much more careful as has been docu mented by fewer building permits lead ing to a reduction in new construction. This is something that should absolute ly be addressed immediately in order to keep us out of a more severe and debilitating recession to accommodate those qualified buyers who need and want to Accordingown.
Legislators in Washington must have received sufficient and cru cial information from a multitude of experts and analytical service compa nies. I think that they were careful not to further affect the real estate mar ket with their new regulations. The profound effect that the doubling of interest rates had on curbing our seri ous inflation issues was sufficient to really change the profile of our crazy and insane real estate market. This had to be done, as increased legislation negatively affecting real estate would have created an even greater, more tenuous, and negative environment for buyers and sellers. Although real estate has been an instrumental factor in causing our inflation, I believe it has had more positive effects in increasing one’s wealth than negative ones. When one buys a home they then begin to purchase goods and services which is a plus for our economy as 70% of it com prises consumer spending. According to CNBC research, 42% of homeowner’s equity wealth has increased by the end of 2021. The profit on a typical home sale in 2021 was a little more than $94,000 an increase of 45% from 2020 and 71% higher profits from the period prior to the Pandemic. Usable equity in one’s home grew by 2.6 trillion in 2021 to a monumental total of 9.9 tril lion. However, an excessive amount of money was freely given out during the Pandemic, sometimes to the wrong individuals and companies, causing greater inflation (higher stock prices) and supply chain shortages from the lack of employees across the supply chain, shortage of raw materials and bottlenecks, cyber-attacks and also weather-related events too. We should hope for a soft landing, but there are so many variables in the mix it’s anyone’s guess how it will all end up.

REAL ESTATE WATCH
to Forbes (forbes.com) magazine article on August 4th and Moody’s Analytics, the financial intel ligence service has predicted that hous ing prices will likely shift in 414 regional housing markets throughout the U.S. between the 4th quarter of 2022 and the 4th quarter of 2024. Of those markets, Moody’s Analytics predicts 204 of them see increases in prices, over that time period, probably due to extremely low availabili ty of homes and I believe more stable interest rates. According to CoreLogic, a data analytics service company prices increased in June by 18.3% year over year, which had the 125th consecutive month of year-overyear increases. However, it was less than the previous 2 months due to higher interest rates, causing slowing demand and concerns over the econo my and most likely families and indi viduals’ worries over their own per sonal finances. Fortune found through research and data firm CoreLogic, that 68% of Metropolitan markets especially our local markets in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties are overval ued. However, 24.4% are normal and 7.6% are undervalued. However, they predict prices will continue to increase over the next year except in the follow ing cities according to Realtor.Com ana lyzing its 200 major Metropolitan areas in June, that had the highest percent age of listings with price reductions: Reno, Nevada, Austin, Texas, Phoenix, Arizona and Anchorage, Alaska, Boise, ID, Ogden, Ut, Sacramento, Ca, Colorado Springs, Co, Evansville, IN, and Medford, Or. In Boise, Idaho, home prices increased 53% from Dec. 19-Dec. 21 to $485,000 according to Redfin’s analysis of mortgage data. Prices rose 48% in Austin, Texas, and Cape Coral, Florida. Considerably lower pric es will occur in those markets where homes are over-valued. However, as incomes rose, and rates increased the sleepy towns that became extremely hot during the Pandemic and are now being affected by much higher interest rates and unsustainable price growth causing a slowing demand. If you are looking to purchase in any of those states, waiting might be your smartest and most advantageous strategy. In another study, the towns that had been most affected and slowed the quickest, as per Redfin, were similar, such as Boise, Austin, Cape Coral, Phoenix, North Port, Florida, and Tacoma, Washington. However, if a more severe recession were to occur (we are in a slight recession currently based on the first 2 quarters of 2022 of negative GDP), then Boise, Idaho, Cape Coral, North Port, west Palm Beach, Miami, Stockton, California, and Salt Lake City are among the 25 housing mar kets that are more susceptible to price reductions. However, due to the higher incomes of individuals and families in those areas, prices probably wouldn’t crash but will see slight reductions. If inventory were to become as high as it was in 2008, then we could see market crashes similar to back then.

I am often asked if it’s possible to lose weight and eat well at the same time. My answer: Of course it is! It may take a few alterations and a willingness to try some new things, but it’s certainly doable. Here’s a recipe for blueberry muffins from “The Mayo Clinic Diet” that allows you to have a guilt-free muf fin. Pair it with some scrambled eggs or a carton of yogurt in the morning or with a salad at lunch.

Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming rye bread with yogurt helped relieve gastrointestinal complaints. No. 4: Chia and flaxseeds. These tiny seeds are good sources of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber increases stool water con tent resulting in bulky, soft and easyto-pass stools. You can sprinkle flax or chia on cereal or oatmeal, add to yogurt or a smoothie or top a muffin with them. No. 5: Water. When we are dehydrat ed, our large intestine cannot provide enough water to properly form stools, which leads to hard stools and consti pation. It’s important to drink plenty of water when adding fiber to our diets. Foods like watermelon and cantaloupe, soup and vegetables also help with hydration.Thebottom line is constipation isn’t something you have to live with. Add fruits, vegetables, seeds, whole grains, fermented foods, yogurt and water to make a difference.

A Nose for Trip Insurance Fiber Up
“So, there are some exclusions in the coverage for the trip insurance I’m con sidering for our winter vacation,” I said to my husband. I had been researching trip insurance for our winter vacation and thought I’d found the best one. But there were some caveats. “Are they reasonable?” he wondered. “They’re actually... a little strange.” “Strange?” he repeated. “Strange how?”“Well, there is no coverage if you fall into a sinkhole. Also, there’s no cover age if you are injured while robbing a ventriloquist.”“Willthey cover you if you are injured while robbing a mime?” he said. “Unclear,” I replied. “OK, so no sinkholes and no rob bing dummies,” he said. “That’s not so strange.”“Also, you are covered for the loss of a thumb, but not a big toe. You are covered if you lose both hands but not one hand. Both feet but not one foot. But you would be covered if you lost one hand and one foot and the sight of one“That’seye.” very specific,” he said. “What if you lose a nose?” “There’s nothing in here about noses.”“Then we should assume that you are covered if you lose a nose?” “Apparently noses are covered.” “Well, that’s nothing to sneeze at,” he Isaid.shook my head. “There’s more,” I said. “You are not covered for any loss incurred in the event of a hurricane, tornado, earth quake, wildfire, monsoon, Armageddon or zombie apocalypse. But you are cov ered if you stumble into a prehistoric tar“Well, pit.” that’s a relief, since we will definitely want to go on vacation where there will be a lot of tar pits,” he said. “I thought so, too,” I replied. “Anything else?” he wondered. “You’re not covered in the event of falling space debris including satellites, comets, meteors, asteroids, moon frag ments and interplanetary spacecraft,” I told“Whathim.if I get kidnapped by aliens?” “It voids the coverage if you leave the planet,” I said. “Makes sense,” he said. “Also, you are covered if you are attacked by a chicken, but not a wolf, a bear, a wombat or a dodo.” “Aren’t dodos extinct?” he said. “I guess they’re not sure, so they put it in there,” I replied.
“OK, so let me make sure I have this straight,” he said. “We don’t want to visit any places where we may lose a big toe, rob a ventriloquist, fall into a sink hole, get captured by aliens, get caught in a zombie apocalypse or get attacked by an extinct dodo.” “That’s about it.” “That’s too bad,” he said. “That is exactly the place I wanted to go on vacation.”“Me,too,” I agreed. “What if we take the sinkhole off the table?”“Then the options are endless.”

Constipation is one of those sub jects we usually only discuss with close friends. But if you suffer from it, you’re not alone. Some 63 million Americans experience the inability to empty their bowels regularly. Having three or fewer bowel movements a week is an indicator of constipation. Left unresolved, it can lead to discomfort and pain, as well as the development of hemorrhoids. While there may be many causes of constipation (like stress and medica tions), diet can play a huge role. Higherfiber foods help a lot. Here are several higher-fiber foods to try. No. 1: Whole-wheat or rye bread. A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people experiencing consti pation who consumed rye bread daily had improvements in bowel movement frequency compared with those who ate white bread. Simply put, added fiber helps form your stools, adding weight to help move stools through your system. No. 2: Dried plums (prunes). A study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that healthy adults with reported infrequent stool habits and low amounts of dietary fiber experienced increased stool weight and frequency by consuming about eight dried plums daily.No. 3: Sauerkraut and yogurt. Having more good bacteria in our digestive systems through fermented foods and yogurt can help promote regular bowel movements. A study in the European
A: Phosphorus is an essential min eral with an impressive range of func tions, so eating a range of phospho rus-rich foods is incredibly important for overall health. It plays an important role in the formation of strong bones and teeth. It also is a key element of cell membranes and helps to activate enzymes, keeping blood pH within a normal range. We need healthy blood pH levels to maintain our respiratory and circulatory systems. Phosphorusrich foods include dairy (cottage cheese, milk, yogurt), poultry, eggs, legumes (chickpeas, lentils), nuts, seeds (sun flower seeds) and red meat (pork, beef). The recommended daily intake for adults is 700 milligrams.

“There is accountability here and I see that the trustees are trying to hold the Committee accountable – ultimately you all have to come up with the refer endum. If the Committee hates you for it – OK. But you all have to do it,” he said. Betsy Andromidas, one of the co-chairs of the St. Paul’s Committee communications subcommittee, com mented that Village Clerk Karen Altman has been one of the hardest-working people in helping arrange information. She said there were 254 people in Cluett Hall the night of a June informational meeting on the process.
Torino says that the judgment of the Fire Safety Committee was ultimately the deciding factor for when the collec tive report was ready – not a timeline set up by the Board of Trustees.
Another point raised was the com munity feeling Garden City has that has lasted throughout its century-plus of existence because of the amenities of theThecommunity.boardheard comments on the high value of the Garden City real estate market and demand for homes in the village. One resident noted, “people want to move here and it’s not because Garden City looks like other commu nities – it’s because it looks somewhat special.”During public comments, a few res idents suggested the board utilize any means it can consider to get the message about planning for St. Paul’s future out, as well as promoting the Board’s appointed monthly meetings. Estates resident John Cantwell said the Board of Trustees could learn from the large turnout on August 18 that they – not the St. Paul’s Committee – are responsible for getting a referendum to come to pass. He noted that five of the eight trustees have been in office since April 2021, and they have had the time to reach a referendum. Cantwell appeared upset that Fall 2022 was noted for a referendum “to work back from” yet the board was still not confirming a referendum date, or indicating when the date would be set.
From page 1 time, energy and passion to ensure that Adelphi is inclusive and supportive of our LBGTQ+ community members,” said Zinko. “To be one of the top forty institutions nationally is very exciting to all of us here on campus and such a tremendous honor.”
Adelphi ranked in top 40 for LGBTQ+ students
A resident asked the Board what “sufficient time” will mean for Garden City to see recommendations of the St. Paul’s Committee, and ultimately lead to a referendum date. According to Trustee Torino, the “sufficient time” in this scenario belongs to the people serving on the St. Paul’s Committee. He says the Village Board needs to “have the cor rect amount of time necessary for the assemblage, distribution, and vetting of the information.” He told audience members he appreciated their desire for an answer, but even in courts deadlines are adjourned “all the time.” In stark contrast, Trustee Charles Kelly said he believes a calendar should be established for the community vote on St. Paul’s and the date should be set.
“I’m ecstatic to say that for the first time, we ended up receiving a five-star ranking on the Campus Pride index, which is the highest ranking you can achieve from this organization.”
Zinko said that although she doesn’t know the percentage of LBGTQ stu dents on campus, students can self-iden tify and share their gender or sexual orientation.“Wehave many groups and organiza tions here on campus, like our LBGTQ Empowerment group, Beyond the Binary club and other clubs. Just this past weekend, with the reopening of our campus to students, we had forty first year LBGTQ students attend one of our campus socials.” She added that with the opening of the new Multicultural Center on cam pus this fall, there are many different programs scheduled throughout the upcoming year to support the LGBTQ community. A staff supervisor will also be on hand during the school-year to oversee programming and support for the LBGTQ+ community.
“We changed it to Garden City High School to accommodate a lot more peo ple and with a much better sound sys tem. There was a lot of back and forth to get this done - we are trying our best, and we have experts in the fields of engineering, architecture and finance dedicating a lot of their time, 60, 80 hours a week or more. We are trying our best and a lot of us live here so we do not want to be priced out of the market –we want to get to something the village can use, or not use, so everybody gets a fair shake,” she said, bringing on some applause from fellow residents.

He explained the difficulty of last year’s compilation of a Fire Safety Committee Report, which was hoped for by Mayor Veneziale for some time in September but ultimately delivered at Garden City Middle School in November.
“I give you that background because the item on the (August 18) agenda is “for the board, upon discussion and due deliberation, shall establish a date upon which a (referendum) community vote concerning the St. Paul’s building”…. the reason why I thought that wording/ version goes on the agenda is for the Committee itself to advise us of when a date can be established,” Torino said.
From page 1
Lifelong Garden City resident Frank McDonough, formerly very involved as co-founder of the Committee to Save St. Paul’s (CSSP), said a decision to set a deadline and to close delibera tions on the referendum process around September 30 would be inappropriate. He reflected on the 30 years of history this issue has had at the municipal level.“Everyone agrees we would like to come to a conclusion but I have been at this for 30 years. The first person besides my wife who wants me out of this effort is ME. What is our time? We made a decision when FABGC candidates were elected that we wanted to come to a con clusion about St. Paul’s yet this board has taken 10 months to form the com mittee, in January this year. Then it took engineers two months to get into the building to evaluate it and see it was not falling down. Then we learned only three to five percent of the building has a problem – and that portion would not be in the way of any kind of restoration. It appears we are not coming up with a plan, and we are still just finishing a listening phase,” he said. Another member of the public shared his perspectives: “I do not know how much this is going to cost, and I do not know if there is a viable option, but rushing this now when we have been waiting for so long….after seeing the destruction of the Garden City Hotel with a big hole in the ground for 10 years… we just do not have a lot of the beautiful things that made this village the Village of Garden City aren’t exist ing any Trusteemore.”Bruce Torino said like Trustee Mary Carter Flanagan, he holds the greatest respect for individuals (res idents) in Garden City who hold opin ions “both for and against any proposals that come forward.” Torino commented on August 18 that the village’s process must go forward with direction and input from “those on the frontline” as the St. Paul’s Committee consists of 38 community members. He likened the knowledge being shared by the St. Paul’s Committee with the over 25 members of the community participating on the Mayor’s Fire Safety Committee, instituted in 2021 by Mayor Cosmo Veneziale. Torino noted the Fire Safety Committee presented its report last year, “in the proper form and giving due caution to what was happening.” He read the whole St. Paul’s agenda item out loud and said he, as a village trustee, is disinclined to impose a date for the completion of the committee’s report upon others. His request is for the Board of Trustees to deliberate and then hear from the St. Paul’s Committee on when a referendum date should be established.“Iwason the Board of Trustees from 1997 through 2001, and we worked extremely hard at finding a productive use for St. Paul’s. I came back to being a village trustee for a variety of reasons, but the first of them was serving on the Fire Safety Committee,” Torino noted.

back-to-school safety issues. Part One addresses “Safe Driving Practices,” Part Two “School Bus Safety,” Part Three “Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety” and Part Four “Stranger Danger.” When schools are opening in the morning and closing in the afternoon, areas around schools are very busy and crowded. Parents and other adults can do much to improve traffic safety around our schools by driving cautiously, teaching their children safe practices and limit ing vehicle trips. In some cases, parents and other adults may be the cause of safety concerns. Drivers should obey all traffic laws and apply the following safety practices. Safe Driving Practices
• Use deep, wide ashtrays. Place ash trays on something sturdy and hard to burn.•After a party, check for cigarette butts, especially under cushions. Chairs and sofas catch on fire fast and burn fast.• Don’t smoke when you have been drinking or are drowsy. Electrical safety • Keep lamps, light fixtures, and light bulbs away from anything that can burn.
• Drivers should not double park or block traffic. Parking or waiting in red zones such as disabled parking areas and no stopping zones is prohibited.
The Board has engaged L.K. McLean Associates, P.C. to design the bathroom renovations for the Stewart Avenue Park Comfort Station for $7,600. The project includes plumbing fixture replacement, toilet partition and acces sory replacement, a new drinking foun dation with bottle filling station and light fixture replacement.
• Take away the keys from anyone who is thinking of driving impaired. Ash Tree Removal The project to remove all ash trees in the Village is going out for public bid within the next two months. Harder Tree and Landscape Service has been beneficial in guiding Recreation and Parks Commissioner Paul Blake and his crews. In the meantime, if Parks crews see any trees in imminent danger of falling, they will remove the trees. All these trees need removal after an infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle, which is drilling into the trees’ feed stream and killing them. This is a problem across the country and unfor tunately there is no pesticide that can kill the beetle. There are currently Ash trees on Washington Avenue, Nassau Boulevard, Franklin Avenue, Clinton Road, Main Avenue and Meadow Street.
• Do not let a friend drive if you think they are impaired.
• Do not overload outlets.
• Never stop or park in a cross walk or within the posted crosswalk “No Parking” area. Students and other pedestrians rely on the crosswalk and need the visibility that the posted no parking buffer provides to cross the street safely.
• If you see someone who you believe is driving impaired, call police.
Smoking • Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can.
• Do not violate the law by using the excuse “I’ll just be here for a minute” when picking up or dropping off stu dents.•U-turns are illegal within school zones. Avoid turning around in neigh boring driveways. It is hard enough to see children and even harder when you are backing up or making U-turns.
• Always buckle up.
Cooking • Cook only where it is allowed.
• Have contact information for local taxi companies readily available.
• Keep an eye on what you are cook ing, especially if you are cooking at high temperatures.•Ifafirestarts in a microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit. Candles

Garbage in the Rear of the House, Trash at the Curb Except for a few places along major thoroughfares, garbage is not to be left at the curb but will be picked up in the rear of the house by Sanitation crews. According to Local Law 5-1978, “Containers with garbage should be placed at the rear of the premises and shall not be kept or placed upon the street, sidewalk, other public place nor upon the front yard of the premises. Containers with rubbish shall be placed at the curb or near the front prop erty line of the premises, preferably near the driveway entrance, or at such other location as may specifically be approved by the Department of Public Works, before 7:30 a.m. on the designat ed collection day but not earlier than 12 hours prior thereto, and shall not be placed upon the street or sidewalk. After collection, empty rubbish contain ers shall be promptly removed from the collection point.” With regard to recy cling, residents should place their green recycling bucket at the curb before 7:00 a.m. Further, curbside placement of rubbish/trash is not permitted prior to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. The Village consistently receives complaints con cerning garbage and recycling being left at the curb days before its scheduled pickup. Before a summons is issued, a warning letter will be mailed to you. Police will enforce this Village Code and issue summonses, if necessary. For further information on garbage collec tion schedules, visit the Sanitation and Recycling page on the Village’s website, www.gardencityny.net.
• Keep your cooking area clean and free of anything that can burn.
Department will be deploying addi tional enforcement patrols on Village roadways, strictly enforcing all DWI laws. On August 12, 2022, Commissioner Jackson, representing the Garden City Police Department and the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police, attended a NY DMV Press Conference at the LIE Welcome Center with other Police leaders to inform the public of the dangers and consequences of driving while Drunk or Drugged and the Labor Day Weekend initiative. If you are attending a Labor Day gathering:•Designate your sober driver in advance and give that person your car keys.•If you are planning on driving, avoid drinking.
• Do not block school buses or use areas designated for buses only.
• Consider using public transporta tion, call a taxi or use a ride-share ser vice if you do not have a sober driver.
• When dropping off or picking up children at school, avoid parking on the opposite side of the street from the school. If you must park on the opposite side of the street, NEVER call your children to your car. Always meet them on the school side of the road and walk them to your car. Also talk with them about what to do if you are not there on time.
• NEVER pass a stopped school bus when its red flashing lights are on. Whether you are behind the bus or approaching from the opposite direc tion, you must come to a full stop and remain stopped until warning lights are off.Motorists should keep in mind that young children usually see and hear dif ferently than adults. Children only have two-thirds the peripheral vision adults have and they have difficulty determin ing the source of a sound. They are still learning to judge distance and speed. When a car is coming toward them, they cannot accurately judge how fast it is traveling or how long it will take to cover the distance. Children generally focus on one thing at a time. If they are playing with friends or riding bikes it is unlikely they will be aware of your vehi cle. Children are spontaneous and have trouble stopping an action once started. Children also tend to overestimate their abilities, thinking they can run across a street before the light changes or a car approaches.
• Please check with your local College/University if candles are allowed.
• Never use an extension cord with large appliances, like a refrigerator.

As many of our friends, family and residents are heading off to college, Chief Pearn and members of the Garden City Fire Department would like to remind you of some important safety tips to be safe while on campus. There are sev eral specific causes for fires in on- and off-campus college housing, including cooking, candles, smoking and over loaded power strips. For most students, the last fire safety training they received was in grade school, but with new inde pendence comes new responsibilities. It is important that both off-campus and on-campus students know their fire risks and prevention actions that could save their lives.
Fire Safety Tips While Living on College Campus
• Ensure sober drivers or alterna tive modes of transportation are set up in advance for guests who are planning to drink alcoholic beverages.
• Learn the traffic patterns at the schools to avoid being a disruption.
• Do not text, use a cellphone that is not hands-free, or drive distracted. If you are hosting a Labor Day gath ering:•Remember, you can be held liable if someone you served alcohol to ends up in an impaired-driving crash.
• Make sure children are careful opening car doors. Children should always get in and out of your vehicle through the rear curbside door.
Back-to-School Safety Schools are reopening this week. With that in mind the Garden City Police Department has put together a four-part series of articles to address

• When backing up from a driveway or garage, be aware that children may be walking or bicycling to or from a school or school bus. • Never leave a child of any age in a vehicle without adult supervision. A small child may rapidly suffer dehydra tion, heat exhaustion and consequent organ failure. Older children could play games that may lead to tragedy.

the very same issue back in June. He is correct in stating the impact this road closure has had on that section of Garden City with no explanation to residents as to why it is still closed. It has created a bottleneck on the intersec tion of 6th Street and Rockaway Avenue as there are still two lanes – one to go left and another to go straight but now for the better part of a year (and the pot holes still have not been fixed), drivers in both of those lanes are forced to go left, driving past the school crossing on Rockaway Avenue for the Middle School.Having that section of 6th Street closed with no explanation is not only an inconvenience to drivers but now that school starts next week, as Mr. Clifford noted, this increased traffic will also create a safety issue for the stu dents, staff (and parents) who will try to cross there. I say “try” as many drivers do not abide by the school zone speed limits and even less stop at pedestrian crossings, even with a crossing guard. One can only hope that it will not take a serious accident and loss of life to re-open this section and revert the traffic pattern back to what it was pre viously.
On August 30th GCPD and GCFD responded to a medical office for a fire alarm and determined the cause to be a control panel issue.
