Parents push back on new math program

Student panel informs district improvements
BY KASSARA MCELROYAt the November 9th meeting of the Garden City Board of Education the board hear comments from elementary students about their schools, as well as comments from parents about a new math curriculum that has been intro duced in the district.
At the board’s work session, a panel of students from Stratford and Stewart elementary schools discussed their Garden City School District experience so far.
“The Board is excited to get to know you a little better. You may ask us any thing and we’d like to ask you a couple questions too,” said Vice President Tom Pinou. “What is it you like the most about Stratford or Stewart?”
sibility of making it to class on time and making friends among so many new faces.
“You all seem like leaders. If you see a kid by themselves, introduce yourself and try to include them in what you’re doing. You could make a great friend in the process.” O’Donohue advised.
President Joseph Sileo wanted to know if there was “anything you wish the schools had?” Suggestions included new basketball nets, vending machines, additional air conditioners, more clubs, to name a few.
On November 8th children and parents of HOLA of Garden City gathered to partic ipate in a beloved annual tradition: Operation Christmas Child. Fourteen children created Christmas cards and filled boxes with goodies to be sent by the organiza tion Samaritan’s Purse as Christmas presents to children in need around the world. In total HOLA of Garden City is sending 18 boxes filled with toiletries, clothing, school supplies, toys and handmade cards.

Early Deadline

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday next week the Garden City News will have an early deadline.
The deadline for classified adver tising is Monday, November 21st at
noon.
The deadline for news items and display advertising is Tuesday, November 22nd at noon.
Students cited collaboration, nice teachers and lots of hands-on activi ties and specials that allow everyone to express themselves in their own way as their favorites. One student with type 2 diabetes said it was the school nurses who consistently make their day bet ter and easier by working together to address his needs quickly, reducing the amount of class time missed.
Trustee William O’Donohue asked the kids what makes them most excit ed for middle school, and if anything makes them nervous about the tran sition they’re about to make between buildings. Many were eager to be in the same building with older siblings and are excited to meet new students throughout the day with more frequent classroom changes. Some students voiced concern over the added respon
Then, it was the students’ turn to ask the questions. A few asked about bring ing on another teacher for the QUEST program to avoid cancellations if their teacher needed to be absent. They’d also like it upped from 30 minutes to an hour because it’s a time where they can “unwind and think outside the box.”
Students also requested new atlases, as some right now have pen marks and ripped pages that distract them. Some said the bathrooms need better clearing and “have needed it for years.”
“As you can see, this is completely unscripted — but that’s the beauty of speaking to our students,” Pinou kid.
The group offered a couple ideas regarding the buddy program, where 5th graders are paired with second grad ers from their school to complete proj ects. Students would like a day where buddy pairing from each school come together to collaborate.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Email: Editor@GCNews.com
FABGC hypocrisy
To the Editor:
As we learned in last week’s GC News, FABGC has selected its candi dates to run for Village Trustee in the March 2023 election. In other words, FABGC’s five-person unelected execu tive committee has picked two incum bents and one new face to represent three of the Village’s sections. Or maybe it was just one person who selected them. We don’t know since no informa tion is public, including the vetting pro cess, same as last time. This is certainly a splendid example of open, transparent government as demanded of others by FABGC.
By contrast, the POAs will be run ning four primaries on January 17 open to all Village residents in each sec tion. The primaries will be held in the Senior Center on Golf Club Lane from 5pm to 9pm. Any resident interested in running may send his or her name to POAtrusteeprimary@gmail.com, either for Village trustee from any section or for school board if you live in Central. The deadline is November 23. Your email will be forwarded to the appropri ate POA based on where you live.
For many years the POAs utilized elected publicly named nominating committees of up to 15 persons to inter view and nominate residents interested in serving as village or school trustees. In addition, any resident could trigger a primary by simply getting 15 other residents to sign a nominating petition. In response to calls for reform, the four POAs have opened the nomination pro cess to any interested resident through transparent primaries. Last March the EPOA ran a successful primary for a school board position.
It’s unfortunate, but not surprising, that FABGC doesn’t take its own advice.
Christine MullaneyThrow your hat in the ring
To the Editor:
Two years ago, I submitted my name to the Estates POA to be considered as a candidate for village trustee and was
selected as their candidate to represent the Estates section. A campaign then followed against a slate of candidates from the FABGC.
During the campaign, I met many village residents and learned so much about the issues facing the village such as St. Paul’s. Although I was not elected, it was an amazing experience as I met many great POA volunteers throughout the village who are so dedicated to mak ing our village the best it can be.
Each of the four Property Owners’ Associations have modified their bylaws with respect to nominating can didates from their section of the vil lage. It’s a simple and open primary process – just submit your name to POAtrusteeprimary@gmail.com and you will be on our primary ballot on January 17, 2023.
You can always run as an indepen dent candidate by completing the appli cable petition. However, I encourage you to consider participating in the POA’s new open and transparent pri mary process. The new due date to submit your name is next Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
If you would like additional infor mation about our primary process, just email us at POAtrusteeprimary@gmail. com.
Rich Catalano, Vice President of the Estates POALet’s consider partial demolition
To the Editor:
I have asked the St Paul’s Committee to consider a compromise option, par tial demolition—the removal of the east and west wings and restoration of the entire front, the chapel wing and the clock tower.
Let’s first review some important aspects of the St. Paul’s building. The building was constructed in 1871 and opened in 1883 as a school for boys. It has a massive size of 130,000 sq ft. It has 500 rooms. The east wing was designed as a dormitory for 300 students and the west wing was designed as classrooms, See page 43

POAs extend deadline for trustee primary
SUBMITTED BY THE GARDEN CITY PROPERTY OWNERS' ASSOCIATIONSThe four Property Owners’ Associations (Western, Estates, Central and Eastern) have extended the dead line for residents to submit their names to POAtrusteeprimary@gmail.com to become a candidate in the POA prima ries for trustee positions on the Village Board of Trustees (all four sections) and the Board of Education (Central sec tion). The new deadline is Wednesday, November 23, 2022.
As a reminder, under the new POA primary process, any resident interested in serving as village trustee can partici pate in an open primary in their section of the village planned for January 17, 2023. The primary candidates and voters are not required to be members of any POA. Please note that that residents are not required to participate in this

process as they can always run as an “independent” candidate in the general elections by completing the applicable petitions.
The POAs hope that all residents will give serious consideration as to wheth er they can contribute their time and talents to make our village and school district the best they can be. If you are looking to make a difference, we hope you will consider becoming a trustee and participate in the open POA primaries.
The POAs believe that this new open and transparent primary process will encourage more residents to consider board service. The process has the over all goal of eliminating the divisive and unnecessary political rhetoric that has accompanied our recent village elec tions. If you have any questions on the new POA primary process, please email us at POAtrusteeprimary@gmail.com

Garden City High School’s marching band performed at the J. Birney Crum stadium in Allentown, Pennsylvania for the US Bands Division 2A National Championship. The band received a score of 89.1 and came in fifth place. This is not only the highest they have ever placed at nationals, but also the highest score they have ever received at nationals.
In the words of marching band direc tor Mr. DellaMonica, "This performance was their final one of the season, and it was their best! The band never pla teaued and just kept growing exponen tially, from competition to competition. This year, one third of the students were brand new to the ensemble and one quarter of the band learned an entirely new instrument. It is astounding what they were able to accomplish this sea son."
This performance was especially bit tersweet for the seniors in the ensem ble. This was their final field show of their Garden City marching band career. Senior Michael Pieraccini said, “From the start of the season to now,

I’m incredibly impressed at how much everyone in the band has grown. This nationals was the best we’ve had since I’ve been in the band, so I’m just really happy I had a good send off. I’m also really excited to see where the band goes from here, and I’ll definitely be visiting a couple times next year!” The students came off the field saying they had no regrets and performed their best show possible.
Senior Irene Makrinos said, “Nationals is a time to show every one what you’ve learned and really put on your best show. Looking back from being a freshman to now a senior, I think I’ve improved a lot. I am sad that this was my final show, but I’m glad that I got to show everyone my hard work over the years and really bring out my best at Allentown.”

Senior Ryan Melendez agreed, say ing, “It was amazing to watch a full year of hard work go by so quickly. But it was worth it for the show we put on and the fun we had doing it.”

The marching band played in rhythm as they did one final practice.

The marching band’s drumline were in-sync as they practiced in the stadium’s parking lot.

2022 Turkey Trot street closures

The Garden City Police Department advises the 45th annual Garden City Turkey Trot races will be held on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24. The Challenger Division Race begins at 8:30 a.m., the 1.4-mile Fun Run begins at 9:15 a.m., and the 5-mile race begins at 10:00 a.m. All
three races start and finish at St. Paul’s. Street closures will begin at approxi mately 8 a.m., which may cause some inconvenience with travel in the area. To assist with your travel needs, please visit http://www.gcturkeytrot.com/ course.html which provides maps of all three races.
With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, it’s time to talk turkey! There are several theories about how turkeys got their name. One story says that Christopher Columbus heard some birds make a “tuka tuka” sound and the interpreter came up with the name “tukki,” which means “big bird” in Hebrew. Did you ever wonder what they call that thing under the turkey’s beak? It’s called a wattle. And when the male turkey (a tom) gets excited during mating season, it turns bright red. The thing hanging over the beak is called a snood. It, too, turns bright red when the turkey is excited. Only the male can make the gobble-gobble sound. It is a mating call to attract hens (the female). Wild turkeys CAN fly but choose to walk or run. And domes tic turkeys fly only to get to higher ground for safety. Good thing, too, because the average American will consume 15 pounds of turkey this year. There’s still time to purchase items for your Fall or Thanksgiving décor. We have many items to make your occasion special.

This will be the 27th year the Alford family has organized and coordinated this pro gram that brings Thanksgiving meals into the homes of so many folks in need.

For the projects first 5 years, it was executed through J.B.’s Pub, a Mineola restaurant owned by the Alfords, but for the past 22 years, the program has been run at their home here in Garden City. Here is the Alfords’ appeal for 2022 which provides ways you can help:

“Once again this year, we will be coordinating a Thanksgiving delivery program in which we provide the fix ings for 30 local families to make their own holiday meal and deliver 225 fully prepared hot dinners to homebound senior citizens on Thanksgiving Day. Though Covid restrictions may not be as strict as last year, we still plan to take a cautious approach to ensure that all involved are safe.
"We are in need of frozen turkeys for the families and non-carbonated bever

We are also in need of large bottles for the families and individual bottles and cans to accom pany the hot meals. Donations may be dropped off at our home at 35 Maxwell Road, Garden City. Please call us to arrange a convenient drop off time.
"We will be accepting homemade des serts and baked goods to accompany the meals but will be purchasing the turkeys cooked and sliced for us from a local market. We will start accept ing deserts next Monday, November 21; again, please call to schedule a conve nient drop off time. We will be provid ing everything to make complete means and will appreciate any financial dona tions.
"We understand this may be a year when many may not be able to help us … we also know that it is a year when many more are in need than ever. Please consider helping us with this wonderful project in any way you can.
"Please contact us at 516-746-8331 for drop off times or with any questions. We thank you for your support each year!”

What happened in the midterms?
BY BOB MORGAN, JR.The 2022 midterm elections have now been completed, and here are some thoughts.
Clearly, the results are a mixed bag, and are not nearly as good for Republicans as the party expected. Despite low approval ratings for President Joe Biden and a num ber of seemingly strong issues for Republicans (inflation, crime, immi gration), there was no red wave. Democrats retained the Senate, which is very important for the Biden Administration, because it will allow President Biden's judicial and execu tive nominations to be confirmed on party line votes. On the other hand, once the glacially paced vote counts are completed in California and a few other states, Republicans seem likely to win a narrow majority in the House. This probable GOP victo ry in the House does mean that after January 3, 2023, Mr. Biden will be unable to pass any legislation with out Republican votes.
There were some bright spots for Republicans besides the narrow House win. Florida was a major vic tory for the party, as Governor Ron DeSantis won a huge triumph in his state, even carrying historical ly Democratic Miami-Dade County and Florida Senator Mario Rubio cruised to victory. Texas Governor Greg Abbott was easily re-elected as was Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.
Nevertheless there were numer ous poor results for Republicans around the country. In Pennsylvania the party's hapless gubernatori al candidate, Doug Mastriano, was trounced, which likely led to the loss of Senate candidate Mehmet Oz to John Fetterman. Other significant wins for Democrats include Gretchen Whitmer's strong win in Michigan and holding Senate seats in Nevada and Arizona.
In New York State, results were also mixed, but not bad from a Republican point of view. Lee Zeldin ran a strong but unsuccessful race against Governor Kathy Hochul, running particularly well on Long Island with a credible showing in New York City. A key by-product of Mr. Zeldin’s race is that Republicans appear to have garnered 11 New York seats in the House, enough to
put the GOP in the House majority.
Why were Republican results dis appointing? Some of the problem was technical. Republicans actually had a higher share of the nation al vote for House candidates than their seat count showed, which prob ably reflects a degree of bad luck. Nevertheless, to use Senator Mitch McConnel’s phrase there was a can didate quality problem in a number of races, particularly involving can didates urged on the party by former President Trump. Election denial ism was harmful. In addition, what ever the legal merits of the Dobbs decision, abortion was not a good issue for the GOP.
The obvious fallout from the race involves the 2024 presidential candi dates of both parties. The midterms were actually a pretty good night for President Biden, as he avoided the severe losses incurred by many of his predecessors. Of course, that will make it harder to avoid a reelection bid by Mr. Biden, who turns 80 years old later this month, if he desires to run. Not all Democrats are particu larly thrilled to have him as the par ty’s standard bearer, although viable alternatives are limited as well.
But the fallout is even bigger among Republicans, especially in light of the likely announcement by Mr. Trump this week that he will be running for President. The timing of this statement might be related in part to avoid any indictment, but you have to assume that this will be another serious bid for the White House.
Many Republicans at this point (especially after the midterms) would very much desire to move in a new direction for their nominee, and are especially looking toward Governor DeSantis. The problem, however, is that Mr. Trump has millions of loyal followers around the country and the GOP risks some form of a civil war if Mr. Trump is unceremoniously dumped as party leader. At a mini mum, senior Republicans will have to convince Mr. Trump’s adherents that, whatever Mr. Trump’s previ ous virtues as President, the party and the country will be better served with him on the sidelines.

Parents push back on new math program
Student panel informs district improvements
From page 1
Illustrative Mathematics program start ed about 18 months ago, with a commit tee that reviewed various resources and ultimately piloted two. The kindergar ten, first and second grades are using Illustrative Mathematics, with select third, fourth and fifth grade classes undergoing a pilot version of the pro gram.
Administrators stressed the fact that we’re not even a full three months into the program and that adjustment will be a journey that will continue to evolve. “We will always seek formal and com munity feedback. This work never ends and we always will have to go back, refine and adjust, no matter the subject or tool.”
An FAQ was created by the District to keep everyone informed on the cycle of evaluation, action, reflection and revision. The plan is to update this document frequently as new questions arise. Unit newsletters and special tools in the platform that use parent-friendly language provide additional context.
As far as professional development for Illustrative Mathematics goes, cer tified facilitators are in-person working with teachers to support them as they implement the resource. It is a highly collaborative process, where teachers have a voice in customizing their stu dents’ learning. A few of these facilita tors were in the room that night.
President Sileo, who has two stu dents in the program, asked, “Most par ents including me think of repetition in math. Do they get that in this program, is that part of the daily structure?” Between daily warm ups that incorpo rate concept repetition using different numbers/images and centers that allow teachers to pair students together and observe practice activities.
“Group learning is great but you’ve got different learners. You could have the best math student with me who’s not so great. Neither will push them selves. How do you ensure you’re get ting the best results?” he followed up. Administrators said that teachers strat egize pairings in advance depending on the lesson and that there is a dedicated quiet think time before any group time, for students to digest information on their own before discussing with a part ner.
Trustee O’Donohue has an 8th grad er who took a benchmark this week. “Are we going to use that data to look at deficiencies or strengths across grades/ the program?” Presenters confirmed. They also use this data to identify items not addressed by the program but included in NYS standards. “We make sure our students are meeting those standards and if they’re not included,
we create our own. All benchmarks and unit assessments filter into a digital spreadsheet for the administrators and teachers to look at for trends to inform lesson planning.”
He added that “A few parents approached me saying something along the lines of ‘my kid was a 95 student now they are performing at more of a 67 level.’ Are we looking at kids that show a difference? Not that kids don’t change, but is there a plan for that?” That’s what data is for, says administrators. They are “constantly looking at student data and making sure to provide prerequi sites are met or exceeded, offering sup port wherever or whenever needed.”
Trustee Arthur Gnecco asked, “You said getting to this path started about 18 months ago. What specifically in the curriculum convinced the committee it would be able to bridge the gap left due to COVID?” Dr. Cannone cited its strong practical application, fluency opportunities, collaboration attributes and the ability to clearly collect and measure data on conceptual under standing. “That’s what helps us identify and accelerate student need coming out of the pandemic. And while no one tool will meet every need, we looked at the standards and are supplementing in the few areas left.”
“Though it may be a newer resource, we’re still looking at multiple data points, you have to,” added Dr. Sinha. Data is triangulated, analyzed along side unit assessment, NWEA and MTSS scores and daily performance. Faculty meets quarterly to develop a compre hensive plan and explained that they are always willing to review this with families.
“Operational question …” began Pinou. “When a vendor produces some thing in a pilot to evaluate what you all saw, is it the same as what you actually got?” Administrators confirmed. The teachers that completed the pilot are really excited because they’re back now to the same unit they started piloting last year, and the transition has been simple. It wasn’t just about the presen tation or picking who put on the best show. Pilot classes existed to try out real program units and materials.
Dr. Sinha added, “With math, we often revert back to what we know because we’re most comfortable with how we once learned it. This program is teaching kids thinking skills and mem orization through understanding. We’re collecting data on changes in student ability that could cut across to other curricular areas.”
“Illustrative Mathematics wasn’t here 10 years ago, just like when Singapore, a popular program among peer districts, was first introduced,” she continued. “I think we’re ahead. It’s an
area for our administration and teach ers to continue to bring their feedback.”
Parents On The Fence
A parent new to the District has a kindergartener in Garden City schools and recently attended a math night. “A few things stood out. It brought togeth er primary schools and parents across buildings. It was experiential, contex tual, not just presentation. My child was excited when I brought home new materials, and said right away ‘mommy let’s do this.’ She also complimented the transparency in communications. “As a new parent just getting your footing, emails and links to differentiated con tent like a video about the unit, an email with text content, etc. These resources are really helpful. I am interested to learn what the data shows and have continued opportunities for dialogue. One idea for a future parent engage ment, night: bring your kid along with you to engage together. They would enjoy it and help parents better under stand.”
Another parent agreed, “ Illustrative Mathematics makes it like a game and I appreciate that. When I was in school, math was direct, no writing or creativ ity involved. It seems like it’s for many different minds and learners. I would also love more workshops.”
An interactive math night with stu dents in attendance is now on the hori zon, according to administrators.
Angela Miuta of Kingsbury Road asked, “Has anyone, hopefully the com pany you paid, created a gap map to see what standards are being addressed, how frequently, what’s missing and where we have to fill in the gaps. Is that available?” That’s what we’re always cross checking. The map exists and was given to us but there are pieces that aren’t in there where we are filling in. We made time in our calendars to ensure we meet those standards.
“I’m not sure about the program,” said another parent. “For K-1 nice to see extra activity, engagement and commu nity building. But I see a delay in YoY NWEA testing. Help me understand why we haven’t done that yet? You’re not collecting accurate data based on timelines. If you have a masters degree you should know this. How will you compare the old to the new? If we have data that is not helpful we won’t col lect again. Did you not confer with col leagues when developing?”
Dr. Dellacamera from Sunset Lane voiced her concerns. “I’m extremely concerned about the new math program. I can tell you from experience, many new programs are selected based on a ‘philosophy.’ I feel the same thing hap pening with Illustrative Math. I can’t find one single peer review research
article that supports its use or any evi dence of any schools that have used it that show stat significance in gains. It might be good for K-1 and interactive games. But what you’re required to accomplish in those grades is very dif ferent than in upper elementary going into middle school.”
Another parent, Dennis Williams of Locust Street, agreed. “Regarding the Illustrative Math rollout. We don’t have reference points. I wonder why we rolled out 4 years (2,3,4,5) at the same time when teachers are learning and students are adjusting. We don’t have the data to support a simultaneous four year rollout, we have nothing to baseline year over year. I do question why we chose this rather than others that our peer Districts are using. Not one of our peer districts, as we spoke about Dr. Cannone, used this program. Not one. I asked you and you said you thought somewhere upstate might be. What evaluation are we doing to say ‘hm, should we continue doing this or pullback and go to plan B and what is plan B?’”
President Sileo jumped in. “On the topic of the math program, I have a 4th grader piloting Illustrious Math and a 2nd grader already taking it — we’re all working hard on it. I would say it’s definitely a work in progress and everything that has been mentioned in the last couple meetings are questions we’ve been able to answer or are still trying to and will. I’d like to come back with some data and facts for you in a future meeting. That’s the thing I think parents want. We’re committed up here across the table to provide that to you. To me personally, time is of the essence, because your kids are already taking it. We are definitely on top of it.”
The District is having teachers meet with these parents regarding their spe cific concerns and is considering a par ent focus group for an added avenue of feedback.
The next BOE work session will be held on Tuesday, December 6 at the high school beginning at 7 p.m. A new panel of students will be in attendance. The next BOE regular session will take place on Tuesday, December 20 at the high school beginning at 8:15 p.m.

Stewardship Sunday at Garden City Community Church
BY MELVA VICTORINOThe Garden City Community Church (GCCC) will be celebrating Stewardship Sunday on November 20th after the 10:30 a.m. service with an agape meal in Gardner Hall. The theme of this year’s Stewardship campaign is, “From BREAD and CUP to FAITH and GIVING.”
There are many ways the members of GCCC give to show their support to the church, by volunteering and serving on different committees with their time and talents, and by pledging to help set goals for the whole year’s programs, events, worship services, educational studies, children’s church programs, music, maintenance, and functions of the church.
Last Saturday, November 12th the Americana Fair brought together the members and friends of GCCC to a very successful fundraiser. GCCC is grateful
for the donations of items and time, and appreciates the community’s support; however, it is vital to determine the yearly budget for the church to plan programs.
At GCCC, it is in worshiping and receiving the sacraments do we strengthen our faith and give freely to continue the ministries we pledge to one another. It will be in receiving the sac raments that we continue to offer pro grams and events such as the following:
• Wednesday, November 23, at 8:00 p.m. Thanksgiving Eve Service
• An Advent Book Study: Sundays at 11:45 a.m. on November 27, December 4, 11 and 18 on the book, “When God Comes Down” by James A. Harnish.
• December 3 (Saturday) from 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Christmas Tree Sale

• December 11: New Member Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
• December 11: Vesper Service at 4:00 p.m.
Christmas Tree Sale

The Christmas Tree Sale will be held on Saturday, December 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be trees from 6–9 feet, beautiful holiday centerpieces, garlands and wreaths for sale, as well as a bake sale and ornament sale! The proceeds for the sale go toward offsetting the cost of the summer youth mission trip . Each year, the youth spend a week working on construction, and other projects, to improve the lives of others during these challenging times.

It is in giving that GCCC manifests the true spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

Whoever you are, wherever you are in your life’s journey, you are welcome at GCCC. We have services, events, and
programs for all ages. We have many ways you can participate in our church life. Our Sunday Worship Service is in-person and live-streamed. To get information regarding our programs, visit our website at www.theGCCC.org.
The Garden City Community Church is part of the United Church of Christ and is an Open and Affirming congregation that welcomes people of all ages, races, gender identities, and sexual orientations to participate in the life of our community.
We are located at 245 Stewart Avenue between Whitehall Blvd. and Kensington Road. For more informa tion, email churchoffice@thegccc.org or call (516) 746-1700. And as previously mentioned, you may also visit our web site www.theGCCC.org.

Joseph L. Mancino, 85, passed away on September 14, 2022. Husband of 61 years, father of two, grandfather of five, family patriarch, business leader and philanthropist.
Joe and his wife Laurel are 35 year residents of Garden City. Joe was an avid golfer and a long time member of the Garden City Country club.
Joe is first generation Italian descen dant. His mom “Bessie” came with
her family through Ellis Island. Joe grew up in Brooklyn, spent summers at Coney Island and later in his teens moved to Elmont and was a graduate of Sewanhaka High School class of 1955.
Joe started his banking career at Central Savings Bank in 1958 bringing people to their safety deposit boxes and later joined the Roslyn Savings Bank where after 45+ years rose to the rank of President, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Throughout his career, he held the positions of tell er, assistant auditor, assistant branch manager, branch manager, auditor, mortgage officer, branch coordinator, executive vice president, President and CEO. Joe also served as a member of the Thrift Institutions Advisory Panel to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Joe received his Bachelors degree from the State University of New York Empire College, the American Institute of Banking graduate school at Brown University, the Dale Carnegie Institute for Human Relations and an honorary doctorate from SUNY Empire College.
Joe was a firm believer that one’s success should be shared and was extremely active with many charities. The Mancino motto is, “When you are successful you should give back to oth ers who are not as fortunate as you are.” Nothing was more important than
helping and supporting those in need, a trait that carried down to his son and grandchildren who are volunteer and career Fire/EMS first responders.
Joe served as a member of the board of directors for The Interfaith Nutrition Network (Past President), Helen Keller Services for The Blind, Nassau County Boy Scouts Theodore Roosevelt Council, the National Center for Disability Services, Long Island University and Winthrop Hospital/NYU Langone Long Island. In addition to many years of charita ble service, Joe and his wife Laurel were repeatedly recognized for philanthropy efforts. Laurel and Joe are Recipients of the Nassau County Make a Difference
Award for making profound and posi tive differences in the lives of those less fortunate. They have made many dona tions to the pediatrics and diabetes units at Winthrop/NYU hospital in Mineola. Joe is a recipient of the 1998 Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recipient of the Boy Scouts of America Good Scout Award by the New York Boy Scout Council. He was honored by the National Society of Fundraising Executives, New York Housing Conference/National Housing Conference Distinguish Community Banking Award for promoting lead ership and community development opportunities in New York’s diverse neighborhoods, Newsday Everyday Hero Award for Charitable Efforts sup porting the homeless and the hungry at the Interfaith Nutrition Network and awarded by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

This year Jon Ledecky, owner of the NY Islanders received the 2022 Joseph and Laurel Anne Mancino Community Service Award.

As the fall season fades and the cold weather finally shows its hand, the challenges to the disabled community venturing out and socializing increas es. I hear from residents about heavy doors without buttons to push which make the social event or doctor’s visit challenging. The caregiver maneuver ing through puddles or snow on vari ous ramps is a common concern and requires more strength, patience and luck!
The one suggestion offered by care givers in our group is to call ahead to the designated host. Let them know you will be attending and ask for advice on how to coordinate with a wheelchair or walker. If you need assistance please ask the host and assess the situation. Many of our local restaurants and food stores will have remedies to most of our concerns.

On a personal note, the residents and business owners in Garden City are amazing! With my rolling walker “turtle like pace” I am often asked if I need help and any door I come in contact with usually will be opened with a smile.
Thank you!
When I am in a wheelchair I do see the issues of doors when my caregiver tries to navigate the multi task challenge of door opening and pushing simultane ously. It’s not pretty. Surprisingly, most of the country clubs in town fail this test and even some of the new busi nesses! I hope going forward this issue can be reviewed by those in charge.
I encourage the disabled and their caregivers to speak up and let us know your concerns. I remember testifying about an issue at the Board of Education meeting five or six years ago. I got stuck in the bathroom outside the high school auditorium and gymnasium for about 45 minutes! Obviously, it was an embar rassing situation when you cannot get out of the bathroom!! However, by drawing a picture for the School Board and speaking up, new ADA bathrooms outside the gym were funded and now await future disabled visitors. As I use to say to my Western Property Owners members at our meetings: “squeaky wheels get the grease”!
Let me know your disabled issue as you maneuver about town! Please email me at gerry7th@gmail.com or text 302-547-0800. Thank you.

Adult Reference librarians have been very busy discovering books we like and want to recommend. Titles include:
“ It’s Not TV: The Spectacular rise, Revolution, and Future of HBO ” by Felix Gillette and John Koblin - In 1972 a new phenomenon emerged - the start of a new kind of television entertainment with the launch of HBO. The authors paint a revealing picture of a cultural and business institution from its begin nings to the challenges it now faces.
The book serves two purposes, and does both quite well. The first is a cultural history of some of the most iconic shows and programs that HBO has developed over the years. In their telling, HBO is a cultural empire that’s been built on some of the most memorable anti-heroes and flawed characters ever created. From Tony Soprano to Selina Meyer, HBO had a knack for investing in shows with characters that for many years broadcast television wouldn’t touch.
But the book’s other purpose is a fascinating account of HBO’s busi ness practices that show how the cable network and eventual stream ing service struggled to keep up with the world it helped to create.
“ All is Bright ” by Raeanne ThayneCan’t go into the holiday season with out a schmaltzy happy Christmas story with a “they lived happily ever after” ending. Raeanne Thayne’s book is just that.
Sage McKnight, an ambitious young architect who takes on her most challenging client - a former pro-baseball player still healing from physical and emotional scars that left him in a wheelchair, and as a single dad. With Sage’s gift for taking bro ken things and making them better, he doesn’t stand a chance against the power of this magical holiday season.
“ Other Birds — A Novel ” by Sarah Addison Allen - An enchant
ing tale filled with magical realism and moments of pure love that won't let you go. This book is about grief, ghosts of the people who shaped and reformed the main characters’ lives, and the power of learning how to let go and believe in yourself to start over!
“ Triple Cross: An Alex Cross Thriller ” by James PattersonA precise killer, he always moves under the cover of darkness, flaw lessly triggering no alarms, leav ing no physical evidence. Cross and Sampson aren’t the only ones inves tigating. Also on this most intrigu ing case is the world’s best selling true-crime author who sees patterns everyone else misses. The writer, Thomas Tull, calls the Family Man murders the perfect crime story. He believes the killer may never be caught.
Alex Cross knows there is no per fect crime, and he’s going to hunt down the Family Man no matter what it takes. Until the Family Man decides to flip the narrative and bring down Cross and his family.

That’s a football game at St. Paul’s School over a hundred years ago around 1910. Note the cars along the side of the playing field. There were no parking lots back then. St. Paul’s School arch rival in sports was always Poly Prep as St. Paul’s from the begin ning had an extensive sports program.

You know, baseball has always been considered “America’s pastime” over the last 150 years. I think its because professional baseball is played over six months with 162 games. So there is a game prac
tically every day during those long hot summer months. However, when it comes to high school and college sports, football is the most popular sport to watch. Perhaps it’s because football begins in the fall just as school begins. So there has always been that association. Also, homecoming weekend is in the fall and is tied to football. Basketball and ice hockey have their fans but just don’t approach base ball and football in popularity. What about soccer? Ironically, I think soccer is perhaps the most pop

ular sport for children to play (I played it through high school) however it never reached the populari ty professionally here that it enjoys in the rest of the world as a spectator sport. Sometimes I catch the English Premier League Soccer on the weekends on T.V. However even I have to admit watching it for 90 minutes to a 0-0 tie is mind numbing at times. It’s much more fun to play than to watch.
Getting back to baseball, it is the only sport where the defense has the ball. Think about it!

mostly for class sizes of 15 students. The school was closed in 1991 .The building sits on the eastern most part of the St Paul’s complex with 7-8 acres that cur rently have limited use.
Let’s review the purchase decision. The Village purchased the 48.6 acre property with its numerous buildings in 1993 for $7.3MM. At that time, the Village Board had a clear understand ing that this price was only a down pay ment of the real cost. Building upgrades or demolition were clearly needed in the long run. In fact, at the time of purchase the Village set up a reserve of $1.2MM for immediate repairs and abatement requirements. Since the purchase, the Village has systematically staged the upgrading of the complex including the renovation of all the fields, irriga tion of the fields, improving parking, adding a playground and a restroom facility, renovating the field house and locker rooms, demolishing Ellis Hall. Therefore, I believe most residents are happy with the Village Board’s manage ment of the complex.
So back to the St Paul’s Building. I believe the St Paul’s Committee is falling into the same trap of prior com mittees. Trying to justify the cost of a large renovation by adding uses that may generate revenue to help pay for the renovation and its ongoing carrying costs. Some proposals would have limit ed resident use of the renovated facility. The bottom line, these proposals have failed.
What is the real goal??? We have 7 -8 acres of parkland that has a building on it. We have a lot of proposals for the land use: indoor sports field, a theater, an educational STEM facility. All of these, and others, may be important for the future but they really can’t be resolved by the St. Paul’s main building. The building can’t meet any of these needs. They are separate projects and should be address separately.
By taking down the wings we can preserve part of Garden City History! It’s time to bite the bullet. Either save a portion of the historic building or demo it!
We can’t afford the keep the whole building! But can we afford half of the building?
Preservation is expensive. Defining how we preserve the historic part of the building is critical. I believe it means you would be able walk into the building and experience an historically correct main lobby with large reception rooms, a grand stairway, a restored chapel, and a dining area . It preserves the rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors providing useful space. The entire front façade on Stewart Ave would remain. It does not mean anything less. Based on estimates back in 2011 this would cost

at least $31MM. Be careful, these esti mates are a decade old, so costs will go up accordingly. This would be funded by a ten year bond obligation.
The cost estimates come only with the demolition of the 55,000 sq ft of main building -- the elimination of the wings and the savings of the cost to renovate them.
If the Garden City residents found this investment for preservation too expensive, the same survey in 2011 indi cated a cost of demolition would be $5.8MM. Of course, that is a decade old estimate.
Would you support partial demoli tion and preservation of the historic portion of the building? If so, speak up and be heard!
Jon SchwiegerClear and present danger
To the Editor:
Dear gentle GC readers, these are titles you will not hear in 2022. Governor Lee Zeldin, Governor Kari Lake, Senator Mehmet Oz, and many other losers backed by their feckless Orange Jesus, the biggest loser in the history of American Politics. Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential elections by 7 million votes.
That is called a landslide! However, the certified loser Donald Trump on January 6, 2021 summoned the mob, assembled the mob and lit the flame of a domestic terrorist attack on our nation’s capitol, injuring 140 capitol police offi cers while damaging our nation’s cap itol to the tune of one million dollars. All sanctioned by the “party of law and order”.
In August the FBI entered Mar-alago and launched a criminal investi gation and found highly classified doc uments, materials showing violations of laws against obstruction of justice and the removal of official records, as well as the U.S. Espionage Act. By law, presidential records must be turned over to the National Archives when a president departs office. However, our former Commander -in-bone spurs took them to his public golf course in Florida. He stated on the Sean Hannity comedy hour he could simply declassify the doc uments by “thinking about it”.
However, this is an apparent felony offense of being in private possession of classified and top secret documents out side the accepted protocol. It is a felony because, in 2018, Trump himself signed that into law. That’s right, Citizen Trump appears to have broken the very law that President Trump signed.
Humpty Dumpty Trump has been impeached twice. Once for trying to blackmail Ukraine and then for January 6th attempted coup.
Lock him up and make America hon est again.
Patrick A. O’RourkeTrue meaning of Christmas
To the Editor:
An Urgent Reminder to all who Cherish Christmas.
The true meaning of Christmas is mostly ignored in society. As we approach Christmas this year, we will see endless news stories about “Black Friday” sales, “Christmas-themed” movies that rarely display a nativity scene, and appalling legal challenges to Nativity displays by anti-Christian groups.
The words, “Merry Christmas”, have been banned at schools, business es, department stores, etc. Instead, we repeatedly hear, “Happy Holidays”, intended to encompass all the politi cally-correct bromides of the season. It seems that we don’t want to offend any one’s feelings, with the exception, of course, of those of Jesus Christ and His Blessed Mother.
Therefore, in response to the secu larization of Christmas, we St. JosephBishop Baldwin Knights of Columbus have decided to take a step to proclaim publicly the true meaning of Christmas – the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Our Savior, the Light of the World.
On Friday, December 9, 2022, we will place our 4th Annual Keep Christ in Christmas Message in the Garden City News. This two-page, pull-out, post er-size message will feature a list of the names of parishioners and Garden City residents who embrace and cherish the true meaning of Christmas.
To add your name to our growing list of participants, we are asking for a small donation of $20 per name. All donations are tax deductible. Checks are payable to: Knights of Columbus Council #15809. Mail to: Mr. Robert Walters, 45 Mulberry Ave., Garden City, NY 11530. Please reply to us as soon
as possible. Our deadline to receive both your name and donation is Friday, December 2.
Thank you and God bless you.
Joseph Levano, St. Joseph-Bishop Baldwin Knights of Columbus Council #15809Election money game
To the Editor:
It seems to be that in critical races for the Senate and the House, money is the deciding factor. Apparently, whoever collects and spends the most money is the most qualified candidate!
Just look at the latest won Senate races in Arizona and Nevada. Apart from the stretched counting proce dure again, Mr. Kelly, the astronaut, raised about $52 million, voted about 98% for the Biden program resulting in almost no benefits for his constituents. Similarly, this also happened to Miss Mastro of Nevada who collected twice as much money as her counterpart Mr. Laxalt.
There is a non-profit outfit called Majority Forward. It doesn’t legally have to disclose its donors and is a major contributor to SMP (Senate Majority Pac). In the past election cycle, it raised about $65 million. Mr. Schumer, who barely made it again, is aligned to SMP. He pushed nearly $50 million in anony mous donations into the midterm. Now, as hypocritical as he is, just recently he called it dark money, even “cancer”. This week he intends to vote in the Senate on the so-called DISCLOSE ACT. He stated, “Americans deserve to know who’s spending billions to sway our democracy.”
Long story short, we need to enforce open contribution limits and election results at the end of the election day as practiced in the state of Florida!

Burglary Prevention
There have been several recent bur glaries reported throughout Nassau County. With days getting darker ear lier and the upcoming holiday season, the Garden City Police Department urges residents and business owners to take extra precautions in protect ing their premises. To assist, Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson offers the following recommendations:
• If you have an alarm, use it at all times, even if you are leaving the resi dence for just a few minutes.
• Trim overgrown shrubbery and trees where someone would be able to conceal him/herself.
THE MAYOR’S UPDATE
cveneziale@gardencityny.net• Check exterior lighting. This includes the back and sides of the home. Ensure they go on at dusk.
• Check windows and door locks; make sure they are in working order.
• Keep all doors and windows locked when you are home, away or just in your back yard.
• Homeowners should consider additional locking devices specifically for sliding doors, as well as alarms.
• Move and secure items that could be used to facilitate entry through ground floor windows.
• Close your drapes, blinds and win dow treatments at night as a deterrent.
• Surveillance and alarm systems should be routinely checked to ensure proper operation.
• Consider a panic alarm or keeping a telephone near the bed.
• Leave an interior light on or use a timer. Leave a radio or television on when out of the house.
• Discontinue any deliveries while away on business or vacation.
• Ensure that deliveries delivered to your residence are removed promptly by a family member or neighbor.
• Inventory, photograph and have an appraisal conducted on valuable items.
• When approaching or leaving your home, be aware of suspicious per sons or vehicles.
• Varying your routine can be an additional deterrent.
• Do not enter your residence if you think someone may be inside; notify the police immediately.
• If you hear or see someone in your home, exit if you can and discretely call the police right away.

• Do not try to confront the intruder.
• If a burglar does confront you, remain calm; comply with the burglars’ instructions. Remember your life is more valuable than your property. Try to memorize a description of the subject. When the subject leaves, call the Police by dialing 911.
In addition to these recommen dations, the Garden City Police Department urges all residents to be aware of suspicious activity around them, and to call 911 promptly during the following situations:
• Call when your alarm or a neigh bor’s house/car alarm goes off.
• Call when there are suspicious noises or persons in your yard or a neighbor’s yard.
• Call when you see a suspicious person and/or vehicle.
• Try to obtain a plate number and a good description of suspicious vehicles.
• Try to obtain a good description of all suspicious persons and/or possible suspects.
• Call when you observe activity at a neighbor’s residence when you know they are away.
• If you see a door or window to a neighbor’s home ajar, open or broken, call the police.
• If you see a neighbor’s car door or window ajar, open or broken, call the police.
• Call when your dog barks due to some type of activity outside, particu larly at night.
Neighbors can help the Police Department in the prevention of bur glaries and apprehension of suspects. There have been numerous incidents where the keen observation of residents has resulted in the apprehension of per sons committing criminal acts. In addi
tion, residents with surveillance sys tems are encouraged to notify the Police Department when it is possible their system recorded a crime or other suspi cious activity either on their property, in the street or on an adjacent property. Surveillance systems, such as video sys tems, Ring cameras, and Nest cameras, have proven to be significant tools in the prevention of criminal acts, as well as in the apprehension of suspects.

Veterans Day celebrated by all ages in Garden City
The meeting to honor veterans was well attended by members of the William Bradford Turner Post 265, the members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 265 and many residents of the community.

On Friday, November 11th, Frank Tauches, Commander of the William Bradford Turner Post #265, welcomed everyone to the Veterans Day event, which was held in the Garden City Library. He recognized the following individuals:

• Jacqueline Eltringham, American Legion Auxiliary President, who thanked the members of the Auxiliary for coordinating today’s Veterans Day event and for all they do throughout the year,
• Laura Giunta, head of the Teen and Young Adult section of the library, who collected cards from 8th grade stu dents in the GSMS as well as from teen volunteers in the library, that were sent to veterans;

• Blue Star Mothers Lorraine Tauches, Marie Ilardi and Barbara Reginio, whose sons/daughter are cur rently serving on active duty.

The purpose of the ‘Meet the Veteran’ event is to expose the Garden City com munity to the experiences of military vet erans. Commander Tauches then intro duced the veteran speakers for today’s event, Michele Dragotti and Ernie Heeren.
Michele described her experience serv ing as a SSG in the Air Force from 2008–2018. She joined the Air Force directly out of high school and rose to the rank of staff sergeant in the Military Police. She initially served on Air Force One trans porting US Senators. She was mobilized and sent to Afghanistan in connection with Operation Enduring Freedom. She qualified as a heavy gunner and sharp shooter. She said she learned a lot in the military and it was a very important part of her life. Ms. Dragotti is now a mother and is working in the legal profession.
Mr. Heeren spoke about his experience as a corporal in the US Marine Corps from 1970–72, which included a tour of duty as a combat engineer in Vietnam.
Garden City Board of Trustees member Tom O’Brien relayed the story that during the war, his father was on his way to Japan when he heard the bomb had been dropped and the war was over, and thankfully, he’s here today. Other BOT members, including Mary Carter Flanagan, Larry Marciano and Bruce Torino, were also present at the Veterans Day ceremony.
Veterans Day celebrated by all ages in Garden City

He also spoke about how he had changed careers five times since leaving the mili tary. His most recent career is as a para medic for NYU Langone. As a paramedic, Mr. Heeren has trained first responders in Romania and Ukraine. He said that his military service has defined his entire life and gave him the skills and insight to nav

igate multiple career changes.

Commander Tauches then recognized and thanked the other veterans in the audi ence. Then about 10:45 a.m., the William Turner Bradford Post began the second part of the Veterans Day event. Due to the inclement weather, the annual 11 a.m. cer emony was held indoors instead of outside
at the monuments. He did a reading then the bell was struck 11 times by Domenick Romano, member of the Post.
Students in the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection preschool 4-year-old class es, sang God Bless America. Since the children are also learning American Sign Language, they actually signed the song

as they sang the song. It was impressive to watch them!
Commander Tauches thanked the vet erans, first responders and residents for attending.
He also thanked the children who attended with their parents, the Cub Scouts and the preschool students.
Ann Marmon Mallouk 1923–2022
Ann Mallouk passed away peace fully, surrounded by her family and friends, at the age of 99 in Greenport, New York, on November 9, 2022. Ann is survived by her children: John, Jeff (and Berta), Jim (and Leslie), and Tom (and Gael), by grandchil dren Megan, Kate, Sarah (and Matt), Laura (and Thomas), Amy, and Juliet, and by great-grandchildren Theo, Chloe, Maxi, and Liam. Also close to the family are Ann’s nieces Leslie and Ann, and the Morgan, Haddad, Boulad, Mallouk and Malhame cous ins, too numerous to be named indi vidually here but all much beloved.

Ann was also the loving mother of Bill, who passed away in 1993.
Ann was born in 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee to Jeff and Naomi Marmon. She grew up in Memphis and attend ed Sophie Newcomb College until her studies were interrupted by World War II. Ann’s heart was won by her future husband, George Mallouk, who was then a captain in the army and stationed in Memphis. They mar ried in 1945 and moved to New York, where they had a loving marriage until George passed away in 2006.

By the time she was 30, Ann was the mother of five boys whom she and George raised in their rambling house on Rockaway Road in Garden City. Ann was the queen of their big Arab-American extended fam ily, learning to make kibbe, laham meshwe, and date cakes with the best of them and welcoming every one to Garden City and to their sum mer home in Milford, Pennsylvania. Ann had a special place in her heart for her nieces Ann and Leslie, and nephews John and Paul, who lived with her family in Garden City for a time. She also welcomed many vis itors from foreign lands who lived in the house (nicknamed “the hotel” by some of its permanent residents) during their extended visits to the Garden City Community Church.
In addition to her strong faith, Ann had a lifelong commitment to social justice and to advocacy for women. She was a civil and women’s rights activist in the 1960’s and attended the March on Washington in 1963. When her children were grown, she returned to school, earning her B.A.
from Hofstra University and then her M.S.W. from Adelphi University. As a social worker, Ann founded the Family Life Center at the Garden City Community Church, where she counseled at-risk families and women. She worked at the Interfaith Nutrition Network in Hempstead to provide help for the hungry and homeless on Long Island. To raise scholarship support for returning women students at Hofstra, Ann and her friend Judith Moyers created a cooking school that was held in her own kitchen in Garden City and involved six well-known Long Island chefs. Ann was a contributor to and supporter of the Pro Arte Symphony at Hofstra. She later became a member of the Board of Trustees of Hofstra, and in 1991 was the first woman elected as Chair of the Board of Trustees. Ann received the George M. Estabrook Distinguished Service Award from Hofstra, and Ann Mallouk Day was proclaimed by Nassau County on March 22, 1987. She was also an ardent supporter of Planned Parenthood, where she received the Beatrice McClintock Award for her service in 1989.
Ann was a thoughtful and gener ous grandmother, making time to do special things individually (tea at The Plaza, trips to the ballet and the Met, a visit to Congress and the March for Women’s Rights on Capitol Hill, din ner in Paris, a cruise on the Danube, and the bullet train to Kyoto) with her granddaughters. The six girls and their parents gathered frequent ly at the new summer house in East Hampton, where Ann cajoled George
to put in a pool, then build a pool house with a Murphy bed, and final ly add a second guest room. Their annual clambakes welcomed their extended family and many friends and included a swimming relay race that somehow always ended in a tie.
Ann cared for George for three years as his health declined. After he passed away, she left Garden City for Peconic Landing in Greenport, NY, where she lived for 14 years. In keeping with her well-established super-human abilities, Ann found that she could compete (and win) in her age group as a long-distance runner. With her yorkie (Ellie), she made many wonderful friends at Peconic Landing, including her trav eling partner Scott. Scott and Ann shared many adventures in Florida and Europe, enjoying each other’s company as “runnin’ buddies.”
Ann will be remembered as an extraordinarily strong, confident and compassionate person. A memo rial service for Ann will be held at Peconic Landing, 1500 Brecknock Rd., Greenport, NY in the afternoon of Sunday, December 4, followed by a funeral at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn on December 5. In lieu of flowers, the family respect fully requests that contributions be made to Planned Parenthood of Greater New York, to the Interfaith Nutrition Network (the-inn.org), or to the George and Ann M. Garden City High School’s Students Helping Students club held its third annual Field of Flags ceremony in honor of Veterans Day. Field of Flags is an impactful display of American flags on the High School’s front lawn meant to celebrate and recognize those who put their lives on the line to ensure free dom every day.
Students Helping Students club focuses on facilitating student-driven community service projects throughout the year. For Field of Flags, the students asked members of their school and com munity for donations in the form of commemorative ribbons each dedicated to a veteran or first responder. The rib bons were then hung on the American flags ahead of the ceremony that took place next to the dazzling flag display. This year, the proceeds totaling $2,725 were given to the Garden City Fire Department.

Student Matthew Kephart gave a speech during the ceremony saying, “Over the past three years, the Garden City community has been hit with sev eral tragic fires. During the worst of which, we lost our very special Molly
Madigan and the members of her fam ily. Seeing the impact that these trag ic fires have had on members of our school, we thought our support and donation would be the best way to show our gratitude for heroes that aided in those tragic moments. The Garden City Fire Department has been instrumental in the safety of our community, and they work tirelessly to help those in dire times of need.”

Members of the High School’s administration, the Garden City Fire Department, representatives from the American Legion Auxiliary, and Students Helping Students club mem bers were all in attendance. It was an awe-inspiring spectacle as one student sang the national anthem followed by two marching band students playing “Taps.”
Garden City High School and the district are so proud of the Students Helping Students club members for their thoughtful efforts in raising money for the community’s very own fire department.

Visit the little town of Bethlehem - at Resurrection
Imagine taking a walk through the little town of Bethlehem on the night when Jesus was born. You and your family explore the marketplace, visit with the townspeople, or help the carpenter make a unique gift. Suddenly, shepherds appear, telling you they have good news. They take you to meet Mary and Joseph, and you see Baby Jesus with your own eyes.
This Christmas, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Garden City, will host “A Night in Bethlehem,” a hands-on interactive experience, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2 and 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. All are invited to come, bring family and friends to experience Christmas in a whole new way.

As you walk through “A Night in Bethlehem,” you will be welcomed by the census taker and register your family in Bethlehem. Then you are ushered into the that era. Everyone has an opportunity to create unique
keepsakes as they interact with local shopkeepers who share the Christmas story. Don’t be surprised if you get a visit from the tax collec tor or even the pesky Roman guards. You will hear the good news from the excited shepherds and have an opportunity to visit the stable—with live animals—and visit with Mary, Joseph, and the Baby Jesus.
Admission is free, while a freewill offering will be collected to cover costs and award to missions. Please call the church office, 516.746.4426, or visit resgc.org/nib for more infor mation.
Resurrection Lutheran Church is a Christian community of faith, located at 420 Stewart Ave., near Clinton Rd., in Garden City. All are invited to worship at 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and at 8:30, 9:45 and 11 a.m. Sunday mornings, with Sunday School and Christian Education at 9:45 a.m. For more information, call (516) 746.4426, visit resgc.org.
At the Spice Shop, visitors prepare spices, a keepsake to take home.
Incredible season for Boys Varsity Soccer
The Garden City Boys Varsity Soccer team wrapped up a very successful cam paign with a tough loss to Glen Cove in the County finals by a 2-0 score. As Coach Paul Cutter ‘it was an incredible season and I hope you know that this loss does not define you or our team.’

If a 13-0 regular season record, a 50-9 goal differential, 10 shutouts, having the individual league leader in goals scored, assists and total points, as well as being the top seed in the playoffs and having a top State ranking doesn’t prove to the boys and their fans that their season was incredible, then a new definition needs to be written.
The season had many highs start ing with the boys’ trip to PA for their annual camp, delivering over 400 mums as their key fundraising event, honor ing fallen FDNY EMS Captain Alison Russo-Elling, to the excitement of the senior day celebration of the 12 gradu ates and a Conference Championship. As individuals, Tommy Poz finished as the league leader in goals scored with 18 and points with 27, while teammate James Healy tied for the league lead in assists with 11 and finished up the season tied for fourth place in overall points. As well as their entire defense stepping up in front of keeper James Castoro to deliver ten shutouts.

The end of season awards are also a good indicator to the type of season an elite team has had, and the awards were plentiful for the boys of Garden City. The talented players selected for All County accolades were captains Spencer Caporicci, Christian Pica, Rob Patrissi and James Castoro, along with top scorers Healy and Poz.

All Conference players are Andrew Menger, Aidan Molloy, Chase Palmer and Kyle Watson. These awards come
after Castoro, Patrissi and Pica were named by Newsday to their preseason Top 100 soccer players on Long Island. And the tributes are not over until the final season individual and team awards are announced at the December Soccer Dinner, so keep a look out for more Garden City winners!
Cutter also told the boys in an Instagram post that ‘…apply the hard work and commitment that you showed throughout your time here at Garden City and you will all go on to do great things.’ That last sentence says what it means to be part of a team, especially a successful team, in any walk of life. The boys may have lost a game, but they gained a lifetime of lessons and memo ries because of their hard work under the leadership of Cutter and assistant Reid Sclafani.
Throughout such a good year there was also acknowledgement from GC Trojan Nation and the TMA Boosters for Athlete of the Week that went to James Healy and Tommy Poz. Poz also was named Player of the Week in Conference A with 5 goals in 2 games.
The last thing that Cutter closed with was ‘to the seniors, thank you. Good luck in the future … to the returning players, let’s get after it and use this loss as fuel to get back to a county final next season.’
The seniors on the team are Finn Andersen, Patrick Bohn, Owen Haggerty, James Healy, Ethan Melgar, Luke Menger, Fionn Mulrooney, Chase Palmer, Harry Pocock, Matt Suba and James Andreuzzi, the team manager. The team was led all season by senior captains Spencer Caporicci, James Castoro, Rob Patrissi and Christian Pica.

Healthy Eating and Food Costs
BY CHARLYN FARGOMost of us are painfully aware that food costs in the past year have risen. A survey by The Hartman Group found that 85% of consumers feel the pinch in their pocketbook. Over half of those peo ple say rising prices have impacted their ability to purchase foods, beverages and other grocery items “at least somewhat.” Nearly 1 in 4 report they’ve “really had to rethink how they shop for groceries.”
Here are some strategies for healthy eating on a tight budget:
No. 1: Eat out less. We all got used to eating at home more during COVID-19. Let’s keep up those cooking skills. The
first step is to plan your meals, so you don’t think about what’s for supper on your way home from work -- and opt for a frozen pizza.
No. 2: Choose less expensive foods se lectively. Frozen foods can be cheaper than fresh if fresh foods aren’t in sea son. Skip or reduce soft drinks and en ergy drinks; swap a couple meat-focused meals each week to include dishes based on canned beans or lentils. Or add those canned beans, mushrooms or lentils to ground beef to stretch your meat bud get for items such as hamburgers, pasta sauce or meatloaf. Choose a larger con tainer for foods like unsweetened yogurt and mix each serving with fresh or frozen
fruit. Choose canned or frozen seafood such as tuna or cod.
No. 3: Reduce food waste. Repurpose that leftover chili into a chili mac; buy a whole chicken, cook it in your slow cook er for your first meal, then use it the next few days in quesadillas, white chicken chili or chicken salad. Take an inventory of what’s in your freezer and plan your meals based on what you’ve already pur chased.
No. 4: Use sales and coupons wisely. My mom used to plan her menus around the weekly grocery store flyer. Now you can do it based on your grocery store app

Why Thanksgiving is the very best holiday!

Thanksgiving is traditionally known as a family day, as a time for people to get together and relax while telling lots and lots of stories. In my opinion, how ever, Thanksgiving is all about the food. Sure food is important on Christmas and Easter but on those days many people focus on opening presents and on Easter Egg hunts.
So once fall arrives and someone says the word “Thanksgiving,” I start picturing a perfectly cooked 20-lb. tur key accompanied by dishes of stuffing, yams, mashed potatoes, a green bean casserole, cranberry sauce and a gravy that always seems to turn out just right - not too thick and not too thin. In my family we customarily use Grandma Katie’s gravy boat, a bone china piece that does the job well and has been passed down from generation to gen eration.
While getting ready for the Thanksgiving holiday this year, I went online and was reading some var ious anecdotes from people recalling menu disasters and other faux pas at their family dinners. They were pretty humorous and when I stopped reading the stories, I thought how lucky I am that my family hasn’t had anything that would ruin a good, solid turkey dinner. We’ve had some near misses but I don’t count them because in the end, things turned out fine.
When my five siblings and I were young adults, my mother was starting to prepare the holiday meal when the power went out in my home town. She had all the fixings for the perfect din ner - the turkey sat in a large roasting pan waiting to enter the oven and the side dishes were assembled waiting to be cooked. All of us had arrived at my parents’ house and once we realized this lack of electricity might go on for a while, my older sister, Michelle, said she had a gas stove/ and oven at her place so we could all go there.

Once we’d decided on our plan, we moved quickly from one place to anoth
er not just because we wanted to have a good holiday but because we real ized that with each passing minute, our appetites were growing. The entrée would be delicious and so would the pies for dessert. We were eager to make this a momentous holiday, one that we would always remember but also one that had tasty food and great company.
Michelle’s home was less than a mile from my parents’ house so each of us put the food, already in their pots and pans, in our cars. It was a short drive there and Michelle immediately start ed preheating her oven. In due time the turkey went in, the potatoes were cooked on the stovetop, the yams turned out well with their bits of melted marsh mallows on top, and all of the food we’d planned turned out fine. Although we ate two hours late, it was a perfect Thanksgiving dinner.
Sometime during hors d’oeuvres and the dinner itself I remember feeling like things were pretty surreal because I’d look around thinking I was in my par ents’ large dining room, comfortably seated at their dining room table then realize that we were all at Michelle’s. Even if things were a bit tight, fitting 16 people at two tables, togetherness is what we wanted on the holiday and togetherness is what we got. All’s well that ends well.
I’m happy to say that we’ve never had anyone cook the roast turkey with
the giblets inside nor did anyone drop the dish of cranberry sauce while it was en route to the dining room table. We’ve been very lucky all in all and sharing our gratitude has always been our main thought.
My nephew, Kevin Anthony, loves anything to do with Thanksgiving. Ever since he first heard about the holiday, about families getting together and cel ebrating with a big feast, he has liked it. The story of the Pilgrims and the Indians sharing their first Thanksgiving with everyone appealed to him although any time people have the chance to sit at long tables outside, sharing a meal, is right up his alley. So is the thought of people sailing on big ships. The ocean amazes him.
Kevin explained that his nursery school teacher told him and his class mates all about Thanksgiving one day when they were four and that story made an impression on him. He’s five now and although he’s forgotten some of the details of the very first Thanksgiving, Kevin got the fact that this tradition of joining together with family and friends, and sharing a meal, is important.
He also recalled hearing his teacher recite a prayer of Thanksgiving the prior year and he asked his mom to print it out so he could read it to us. Young Kevin can be a little dramatic so he got into it as he read a holiday poem
called “Family Tree” by Lori Soard:
“Lord, Please bless our family tree.
Each branch is special to me.
God, I thank you for those I love.
And for all great gifts from above.
Amen.”
Everyone applauded when Kevin fin ished reading and, putting the paper down, Kevin unhesitatingly dug into the food on his plate.
My six-year-old niece Charlotte Anne glanced over at Kevin and smiled but before starting her meal she wanted to share her thanks. Her family had recently gotten a Goldendoodle and as a dog lover she was so happy about that.

Charlotte thanked her parents for mak ing that dog, named Gus, a part of their family and she promised she would help by walking him and playing with him.
Listening to the youngsters saying their prayer of thanks and mentioning things in their daily lives that they were grateful for reminded me that as much as I focus on how spectacular the dinner can be on Thanksgiving, deep down I know that first and foremost, sharing the day together is what it’s all about.
A very Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
Don’t Overthink Social Security Starting Date Questions
BY TOM MARGENAUI frequently get emails from read ers who turn a little molehill of an is sue into a big mountain of a problem, and it has to do with the starting date for their Social Security benefits. The Social Security retirement application asks a question that goes something like this: “Which month do you want your benefits to start?” Way too many folks overthink the question, and it is espe cially vexing for those who absolutely insist that their benefits start at their full retirement age -- not a month before and not a month later. (Near the end of this column, I will point out why people shouldn’t get so hung up about this FRA start date business.)
For now, here is an example. Frank wants to wait until his full retirement age, 66 and 4 months, to start receiving his Social Security benefits. He turns FRA in December. So, when the appli cation asks, “When do you want your benefits to start?” Frank should answer, “December.” It really is that simple.
But then Frank starts thinking too much; here is what I mean by that. He knows that Social Security checks al ways come one month behind. In other words, the Social Security check for De cember is actually sent out in January. Now Frank worries that if he indicates he wants his benefits to start in Decem ber, SSA will interpret that to mean he wants his first check to come in Decem ber, meaning it would be the payment for November. And if his benefits were to start in November, that would give him a one-month reduction in his full retirement age benefit rate.
Then Frank thinks even harder and figures that he should answer the ques tion by saying he wants his benefits to start in January, knowing that would be the December Social Security payment. But if Frank does indicate January as his starting month, he won’t get his first benefit payment until February.
As I have explained a hundred times in this column, don’t worry about So cial Security check payment dates. The application question is not asking when you want your first Social Securi ty check to physically show up in your bank account. Instead, it is asking which month you want to be your first month of eligibility for Social Security benefits.
The folks at the Social Security Ad ministration know this has been a prob lem because they have been getting lots of calls from panicked retirement appli cants who misinterpreted the question and answered it incorrectly, or at least what they perceive to be incorrectly (more about that in a minute). So, they are calling to see if they can change their answer -- thus creating lots of ex tra work for SSA’s representatives and computer systems.
According to quite a few readers
who have reported this to me, SSA has changed the question asked on the on line retirement form, at least for folks approaching their full retirement age. It now says this: “Do you want your bene fits to start at the earliest date without a permanent reduction?”
This is a bit of a mouthful, and more than a few readers told me it took them a reading or two of that line to decipher it. But if you are approaching your full re tirement age and that is when you want your benefits to start, by simply answer ing “Yes,” you can be assured that your benefits will start effective with the month you reach FRA -- not a month be fore, and not a month after.
So now let me get back to this issue of working yourself into a tizzy about starting your benefits at exactly the right month. To explain where I am coming from, let’s go back to Frank’s case. In the following examples, we will assume his FRA benefit amount is $2,500 per month. I said he turns 66 and 4 months in December, and he wants his benefits to start then. So, he should indi cate December as his starting month. Or if he is filling out the online application with the new question -- “Do you want your benefits to start at the earliest date without a permanent reduction?” -- he would answer, “Yes.”
Now, let’s say he didn’t do that. Sup pose he said he wanted his benefits to begin in November, because he figured that’s the check that comes in Decem ber. That essentially means his benefit start date would be age 66 and 3 months, one month before his FRA.
Retirement benefits are reduced about one-half of 1% for each month they are taken before FRA. So instead of getting $2,500 per month, Frank’s ben efit rate would be about $2,488 -- mean ing he loses $12 per month, forever. That’s the bad news. But on the upside, by choosing November as his starting month, Frank did get one extra check for $2,488. It’s going to take Frank about 207 months before he comes out on the short end of the Social Security stick. In other words, Frank will be 83 years old before his supposed “mistake” catches up to him.
A panicky Frank might be inclined to call SSA to change his starting date, which would entail withdrawing that first claim, repaying the one month’s reduced retirement benefit he received, and refiling a new claim. But I’d tell Frank not to worry about it. Take the extra $2,488 check and have a party!
Now let’s say Frank went the other way around -- meaning that he picked January as his starting month thinking that the December check comes in Jan uary. But by choosing January, he’s not going to get his first Social Security ben efit payment until February. As in the prior example, Frank panics and thinks he better contact the SSA to correct his
perceived mistake. But once again, I’d tell Frank to relax. Sure, he’s going to miss out on one Social Security check (the December benefit that would have been paid in January). But the upside is that Frank’s ongoing benefits will in clude a two-thirds of 1% “delayed retire ment credit” increase for starting his benefits once month after his full retire ment age. If Frank lives long enough, at some point he’ll actually come out ahead with what he thinks was a mis taken Social Security decision.
If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. One is called “Social Secu rity -- Simple and Smart: 10 Easy-to-Un derstand Fact Sheets That Will Answer All Your Questions About Social Secu rity.” The other is “Social Security: 100 Myths and 100 Facts.” You can find the books at Amazon.com or other book out lets.

Surveying buyers, sellers and investors
BY PHILIP A. RAICESI am devoting a portion of this week’s column to ascertaining what purchasers, sellers, and investors’ concerns are in our local Long Island market.
The following are choices in determining how you would rate your concerns about the current real estate market and where you might place your money whether you choose to stay put where you are, go into a rental, or consider moving out of the area to a lower priced location or state or lastly to buy an investment property for cash flow. Choose the top 4 in the order of most to least in importance to you:
1.) Interest rates
2.) Lack of inventory to choose from
3.) Rental prices
4.) Staying in place and saving more for a down payment
5.) Fear of purchasing at the height of the market
What is your biggest concern right now:
A.) Buying your primary home
B.) Buying an investment property for cash flow
C.) Investing in the stock market
I would hope my readers will respond and provide me and other readers with a view of the pulse of our local market in a future column. So please email them back to me at phil@ turnkeyrealestate.com in the order that you feel is most concerning in either buying, selling, or investing.
Real estate is considered more of a local event. What happens here on Long Island can be much different compared with down south, in middle America, and out west, and can have varying degrees of the strength and weakness of their particular markets.
As an example, inventory out west in San Francisco increased 32% year over year in June as per Realtor.com. Los Angeles Metro Area saw housing inventory slightly accelerate, but September price increases of 2.7% year over year, but 2% lower from August 2022. Sales in Los Angeles County contracted 31.7% year over year. Due to the excessive increases in interest rates, Nevada, Colorado and Texas have seen much slower sales contributing to increased inventory year over year and the slowing of the market for new homes. Moreover, due to higher costs of construction and supply chain issues, developers have also pulled back. Having déjà vu of 2008 and have pulled back due to the fear of getting stuck with unsold homes with looming memories of the past in 2008.
However, in Long Island, there aren’t as many areas where land is readily available to build new homes, so inventory is much more restricted and will take many years to reach normal levels of 6-7 months. Due to the still fairly strong demand, as the median sale price of homes sold on Long Island in the 3rd quarter hit a record of $620,000 as per the Multiple Listing Service. This was a 6% increase year over year. Available inventory is still at 3.1 months, meaning it would only take that long to sell all the available homes currently on the market. Listing inventory fell 6% compared to 2021 and sales fell 16% compared to the same time period. Those that had prior lower interest rate commitments were fortunate and lucky with their timing
and purchases. Most important, Suffolk County had established a Land Trust, which was the first in the nation, and NYS, which has been securing and purchasing more and more farmland to keep as protected nonbuildable spaces; and for the last 40 years up until 2018 had acquired or restricted 10,000 acres of farmland from doing any residential construction.
With inventory as tight as it is and the lack of buildable land, many are knocking down homes to build new ones. Prices therefore will not crash but may moderate as interest rates increase again and this may dampen demand in the 4th quarter, especially for investors who are most concerned with the return on investment. The continued demand from millennials and Gen Zs for those whose incomes have increased and those baby boomers who want or need to downsize and are able to stay local may just keep our market going through 2023. But realistically with all that is occurring, with inflation, energy issues, supplies of goods and services, and the continued war in Ukraine, the results of our Midterm elections, will determine the future effect on our economy. It is unknown what future domestic and world events might affect and deter buyers and sellers; it’s all a guessing game and prognostication. Some will be right and many will be wrong, but we’ll hope and pray for the best outcome.

-- and what’s on sale.
No. 5: Make a list before you shop. Most of us tend to impulse shop when we go to the grocery store. If you have a list, you’re more likely to purchase the things you need rather than what appeals to you in the moment. It’s also important to eat before grocery shopping. Planning helps you avoid overbuying and helps you know when to cook a little extra for use in another dish. Q and A
Q: How much calcium do we need, and what foods contain calcium?
A: The National Academy of Medicine recommends 800 milligrams a day for women under age 50 and men up to age
71, and 1,000 milligrams per day there after. For women, the additional calci um after age 50 is needed to help offset the loss of estrogen at menopause. The estrogen loss triggers more rapid bone loss. A serving of milk, yogurt or a yogurt drink (like kefir) supplies around 300 milligrams. An ounce of cheddar cheese has 200 milligrams. In addition, many foods are fortified with calcium, such as breakfast cereals, plant milks and orange juice. Vegetables (like cooked greens and broccoli), legumes (chickpeas), nuts (al monds), seeds (sesame seeds) and dried fruit (figs) also offer calcium.

The Mystical Northern Lights
BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of November 20-26, 2022Stand just once beneath the shim mering curtains of the northern lights -- the aurora borealis -- and you will never forget the experience. They are without question the most hauntingly beautiful and unearthly of all natural phenomena.
A typical auroral display begins as a diffuse arc during late evenings. As the arc brightens and drifts slowly across the sky, new ones may form in its place. Within these may appear intricate rip ples and curls that dance along the arc, giving the impression of curtains blow ing gently in the breeze. Their colors can range from a faint grayish green to brilliant yellow-green, crimson, purple and sometimes even blue.
Such displays have mystified and inspired sky watchers for ages. Some tribes of North American Indians believed the aurora to be the light of lan terns carried by spirits seeking the souls of dead hunters. During the Middle Ages in Europe, the lights were believed to be the breath of brave soldiers who gave their lives as they battled forever in the skies for their king and country. And Indigenous Australians believed the aurora australis (the southern lights) to be a dance of the gods across their southern sky.
Witness them just once and you’ll completely understand.
Today, of course, we strive for a
more scientific appreciation. Over the past century of aurora research, we’ve learned that these mystical lights owe their origin to the sun. Our star con tinuously belches into space electri cally charged particles and sometimes erupts in violent “coronal mass ejec tions.” Some of these particles are cap tured by our planet’s magnetic field and slam into the polar regions of our upper atmosphere, causing atoms of oxygen and nitrogen to glow a variety of undu lating colors.
Residents of arctic regions are treated to these magical lights almost nightly, but those in lower latitudes certainly aren’t excluded -- especially now as the sun is approaching the top of its 11-year activity cycle (“solar maximum”). At times of solar max, auroral storms can become even more powerful and fre quent and can enable sky watchers in southern Canada and the northern tier of U.S. states to see the spectacle. In fact, during the most recent solar maximums, stargazers as far south as Florida, Texas, Arizona and Southern California enjoyed viewing several mas sive displays as undulating waves of greenish-gray or deep crimson. We could see these again over the next few years.
Of course, to see the lights in their true splendor one must travel north ward, to places like Alaska, Iceland and Norway, where they can be seen danc ing majestically across the sky on just about every clear night.
If this amazing experience is on your
bucket list -- or if you’d like to give a gift that is truly out of this world -- I hope you’ll consider joining me for my exciting March 2023 Alaska Northern Lights tour, where you will learn to forecast, watch and even photograph the lights like a pro. For more details about this once-in-a-lifetime cosmic adventure, visit melitatrips.com/alas ka-northern-lights, and use promo code

Wherever you live -- or wherever you travel -- keep your eyes skyward, for the aurora borealis is one sky show you definitely don’t want to miss!

Can You Hear Me Now?
BY TRACY BECKERMAN“What did you say?” said my hus band. “You think I need to get my meer kat net?”
“No. I said, ‘I think you need to get your hearing checked!’” I sighed.
“My hearing is fine,” he argued. “You were mumbling.”
I shook my head. I am not a mumbler. Nor am I a soft talker or a dog whisperer. If anything, I’m typically whisper-chal lenged, which is why I knew the issue was my husband, not me.
“Just go to the audiologist,” I said.
“Why do I need an archeologist?” he wondered.
I just stared at him and then left the room, muttering under my breath. Now if he didn’t hear me at least there was good reason.
I, myself, had recently been diagnosed with an issue called “hidden hearing loss,” which is really just a problem hear
ing conversation in a crowded room. On a side note, I also suffered from “silent reflux” and “phantom knee pain,” so apparently, all my problems were secret ones. My husband, however, had a hard time hearing me clearly all the time. It was pretty obvious, at least to me, that there was nothing phantom about his hearing issues, although he may have had some not-so-hidden denial about it.
“I hear everything I need to hear,” he said
“So, you have selective hearing loss,” I said.
“I dunno. Maybe,” he replied.
“Which means you have elected not to hear me,” I said.
He shrugged. “I probably can’t hear my mother, either.”
Eventually he went to get his hearing checked just to prove me wrong and was surprised when the audiologist gave him her diagnosis.
“You have ‘spousal hearing loss,’” she
said confidently.
“What does that mean?” we asked.
“You are tuning out the frequencies of your wife’s speech,” she said to my husband.
“Just me?” I wondered.
“Maybe his mother, too,” she said. Clearly, she’d been around the block a few times with this topic.
“So, this is really a thing?” I asked her.
“Not officially,” she replied. “But I do see a lot of it.”
When we got home, I wondered if my husband would be able to hear me if I spoke an octave higher or lower. I decid ed to try out some different frequencies when talking to him to see if my theory worked. I am typically an alto, so I had a wide range of other vocal ranges I could try.
“What do you want to do about din ner?” I sang in my highest operatic sopra no. My husband was in the next room, so I thought it was a good test of our theory.
I wasn’t sure if he would hear me, but there was a good chance I might get a female solo in the next Met performance of “La Traviata.” At the very least, I knew at that pitch the dog could hear me.
“Yeah, I think you look a little thin ner,” he replied when he walked into the kitchen.
So, clearly going an octave higher didn’t help.
“How about some fish,” I asked, drop ping my voice down to a tenor.
“Yes, honey,” he said, coming behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist. “You are definitely a dish.”
I smiled. Maybe this hearing loss issue wasn’t such a bad thing.

Thunder Savio 11s top Long Beach 22-7
The Thunder Savio 11s bounced back from a tough stretch in their season to beat the Long Beach Bulldogs, 22-7, in the semifinal round of the division 3 cham pionship bracket at Community Park in Garden City.
It was cool and overcast for the 10:30 a.m. start, and neither offense could build much momentum as the first quarter ended 0-0. Running back Zach LaRosa broke that stalemate with a 5 yard plunge in the second quarter between blocks from Aidan Kehoe and William Griffin. That would be the only score of the first half, and the Thunder entered the inter mission with a 6-0 lead.
The third quarter played out exactly as the first, with neither team able to break the goal line. As the skies cleared to open the fourth quarter, however, the Thunder offense truly began to shine. Zach LaRosa followed up his earlier TD run with a 45 yard romp through the heart of the Bulldog defense that recalled images of gazelles in the Serengeti. Kevin Hegarty continued that theme with his own 41 yard scamper on the Thunder’s following possession. The special teams unit had been preparing all season to convert a 2 point PAT kick, and kicker
Michael Griffith delivered in a huge way - booming successful conversions on each score. Final score: Garden City 22, Long Beach 7
The defensive performance of the game was provided by cornerback Sean Campbell. He made several decisive tack

les and intercepted a Long Beach pass attempt in the second quarter - returning it nearly 50 yards to dash the Bulldogs’ hopes of scoring. Linebackers William DeBusschere and Ryan Jackson, and line man George Lane were fearsome pres ences the entire game. They contributed

to a total team effort which brought back the beaming smiles we are all so accus tomed to seeing.

Next up is the division 3 cham pionship game vs. Lynbrook1:30 p.m. this Sunday at Mitchel Field in Uniondale. Go Thunder!

In honor of Veterans Day, the Rams 2030 Maroon Lacrosse team worked together to collect donations from fam ily and neighbors to help stock a local pantry servicing Nassau County veter ans. Wearing red, white and blue, the players gathered at St. Pauls to pack the items up into multiple car loads. Jimmy Kenny spoke with the team about the importance of honoring our heroes through community-based efforts and always expressing gratitude for their service to our country. With 100% participation from the

After get ting harnessed in, they were climbing and ziplining through the trees and having what was surely a memorable group-bonding experience. Fresh off an exciting night scrimmage win versus Manhasset, it was a fulfilling week!

Thank you to chaperones Anthony Oppedisano, Brad Chalupa, Whipple Newell, Jimmy Kenny and coaches BJ Prager and Brandon Wenk for making this such a great experience for all.
