Advertorial

Are You Ready for a Financial Emergency? The wrath of natural disasters has been on full display in recent weeks as hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires and floods have ravaged large swaths of the world. While our first thoughts go to the victims of these tragic events and the challenges ahead for recovery, it may also cause you to step back and think about your own preparedness for a natural disaster. If you’re feeling underprepared from a financial standpoint for the possibility of an unwelcome weather event, consider creating an emergency plan. Create a plan Just as you plan ahead for your retirement or children’s college tuition, you need to prepare for risks related to a financial emergency. Any type of unforeseen event could jeopardize your financial security. Work with your financial advisor, estate planner and attorney to identify and address potential financial risks.

Protect your property One common concern in such events is catastrophic damage to your home. Start by making sure your property is appropriately insured. Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure there is sufficient coverage for unforeseen events. Remember that typical home insurance does not include coverage for flood damage, which needs to be purchased separately. Home owners may assume they are not at risk of such damage, but unusual circumstances might mean your risk is greater than you think, so it’s best to double check. Those who rent their living space should consider renter’s insurance to protect property. In the case of disasters like a flood or tornado, you want to make sure you have sufficient coverage for possessions, including valuables, vehicles (e.g. cars, boats, ATVs), and technology. Maintain good records of the valuable items you own and keep them in a safe place. It can be helpful to take pictures of your property before an event occurs as well as after to help you in the insurance claims process. Establish your emergency fund A general rule of thumb is to have at least three-to-six months’ worth of expenses saved in case of an emergency. Consider saving more if you have children or live

in an area where severe weather threats are more common. Keep these funds in accounts that offer liquidity like a money market fund or in bank savings. Make sure you have some cash on hand in case power outages or other issues prevent ATMs from working.

The money you set aside could be used for temporary housing, medical care or to cover your essential expenses if you’re unable to return to work. The funds can also jump-start your relief and clean-up efforts. Safeguard your financial information When unanticipated events occur, you will need access to your financial information and personal identification documents. Store copies of your insurance policies, financial account statements, medical information, Social Security cards, driver’s licenses, passports and other important records in a secure location such as a bank safety deposit box or a secure electronic vault. Having documentation readily available allows you to quickly verify your identity and work through your emergency plan after disaster strikes. Recent events are a reminder of the importance of having an emergency financial plan in place to help protect you against worst-case scenarios. Philip P. Food With Roots is What We Serve

From the beginning, our idea was to serve food the way it was made for us by our Uncle Faris - delicious, homemade, and made with love. It’s the kind of food that has roots. Roots that go all the way back to when we were kids. And roots that respect and connect the community of people who grow, prepare, and eat the food we serve.

GREENS & GRAINS BOWLS | ALL-NATURAL BURGERS SHAKES & SMOOTHIES | SALADS | KIDS MEALS

Garden City Historic Misconceptions STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES

We are living in what is known as the “Information Age” but we are also living in the “Misinformation Age.” Each is only a click away. For over 25 years I have been working with Garden City’s history and I have done my best as a historian to produce an accurate account of its story. From my books to my documentary films to my bus tours and articles I pride myself in my understanding and presentation of Garden City’s entire history. When I was younger at Garden City High School I was in all advanced placement history courses and in college I majored in American History and photography. I learned to do proper research and work with archival material. I will be teaching a four week course on Garden City’s entire history at the high school at night beginning on November 22nd. (Call G.C. Continuing Education for more inforWmation at 516-478-1070.) Over the years, I’m aware that individuals and groups have dabbled with our history but most are not historians. A historian intensely familiarizes themselves with the subject and period of history they are dealing with so they are able to reject information they come across as inaccurate instead of just repeating it. Recently, a resident called me about an article in this newspaper stating that his house at 32 Cathedral Avenue (an Apostle) had once been moved. He knew it hadn’t as did I. Unfortunately, the information stemmed from the 1978 listing of houses and buildings in Garden City from the 1870’s and 1880’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Apparently, the specific information about this house (and perhaps others ) provided in 1978 to the National Register was wrong and now in 2016 it gets repeated. Also, those houses were listed as “A.T. Stewart Era” houses. The problem with that is when the “era”is dropped and a house is referred to as an “A.T. Stewart house”. Words have meanings and if you say that’s a “Paul Revere house” people will assume Paul Revere lived there. As Stewart never lived in Garden City one can see how the phrase could lead to confusion. Ironically, I had just done an article on the original ten houses (a.k.a. Apostles) in this newspaper about a month ago. In it I stated the only Apostle house to be moved had been moved twice. This particular house, originally on the SE corner of Cathedral Ave. and Fifth Street, was moved across Fifth Street in 1902 so St. Mary’s School (which had been built next to it in 1892) could expand. After a club had acquired the house in 1975, it was moved a second time to 11th Street in 1988 when the Cathedral who

owned the land wished to sell it. You see, there has to be a really good reason to move a house. Also, if a house is moved you should know where it was moved from. Interesting too is the fact that all ten Apostles originally faced either west or east with a side porch facing south. So the one moved to 11th Street has a side porch on the right hand side because when it

This 1860 T.P. Rossiter portrait is the best likeness of Stewart that exists. originally was on Cathedral Avenue it faced west and thus the side porch was on the right so it faced south. My predecessors, Mildred Smith and Vincent Seyfried each had written books on Garden City’s history. Smith’s 1963 book stated there were 12 Apostles (there were in the Bible) and Seyfried’s 1969 book stated there were nine and he had some information wrong. I never had the chance to meet Smith before she passed away but Vincent Seyfried and I had many conversations on matters like this and I showed him conclusively the ten apostles and where they were located. He agreed. But someone picking up these books, which are mostly correct and very well done,

would say how would we know what is accurate and what isn’t? Exactly! That’s what makes researching and writing about history much more difficult than it appears. For those who think it is just a matter of copying something out of a book or off the Internet, are really just fooling themselves and actually doing a disservice to the community as often they are repeating inaccurate information. Here are some other historic misconceptions I have come across over the years. Maybe you have heard of them too! Garden City’s founder, A.T. Stewart, sat for several portraits, the most famous of which is the 1860 T.P. Rossiter painting (a copy hangs in the Library). Also, there are eyewitness accounts of his appearance . He was Scotch-Irish with reddish brown hair (tinted with gray as he got older). He had light blue eyes and a beard with no mustache his entire adult life. However, there are no known photographs of Stewart that exist but there is an image of someone taken by Matthew Brady filed at the Library of Congress as Stewart. It shows a man seated in a chair with jet black hair, dark eyes and he is completely clean shaven! Smith, Seyfried and myself have all rejected it as Stewart but when someone is looking for a photo of Stewart that one shows up. Most recently it appeared in the beautiful Cherry Valley Golf Club Centennial book this year (ironically so does the T.P. Rossiter portrait - they look nothing alike). There is a lot of misinformation on Stewart’s intent on building Garden City. When Garden City was begun a lot of newspapers began to speculate on his intentions. From Harper’s Weekly to the NY Times everyone chimed in and like today’s media (i.e. the election) they got it wrong. A common misconception was that he was building Garden City so his employees could live here or that it was for the working class of Brooklyn. The first ten houses (Apostles) cost around $18,000 a piece to build (a fortune in 1872). Take my class to find out his real intent! Whenever I give my Garden City historic bus tours, there is always someone who will have some way out misconception. Here are two of my favorites. ”I was told when I was growing up that the Cathedral of the Incarnation was an old European cathedral that was dismantled and shipped to Garden City and then put back together.” Well, no, it was built right here from scratch using Belleville, New Jersey, brownstone. Here’s another “I was always told that Abraham Lincoln laid the cornerstone for St. Paul’s School.” Well, no, Lincoln was assassinated in 1865 and the cornerstone was laid in 1879. Speaking of St. Paul’s cornerstone, I’ve often seen St. Paul’s completion date as 1879 since the cornerstone reads “1879” but the school building was not completed

This 1878 panoramic rare view of Garden City looking north with Rockaway Avenue on the left (note the two Apostles), was taken from the Apostle house on the S.E. corner of Second Street and Rockaway Avenue. It was not taken from the house on the S.W. corner of First Street and Rockaway Avenue as stated in Smith’s B/W photo book.

GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY • Friday, October 20, 2017

until 1883. The Cathedral cornerstone reads “1876” but it was not completed until 1885. Every once in a while a Realtor will advertise a house with misinformation. Often the homeowner will give it to them because a previous owner told them something. For example, claiming a 1912 house on Brook Street was designed by Stanford White. He was murdered in 1906. Another example, a house in the Estates section advertised as from the 1890’s but Garden City Estates was not begun until 1906. Now, I have had people tell me that the Nassau County website said this date or that date but a lot of the dates are guessed at. Garden City’s early records burned in a 1911 fire so often ages are estimated. Do not believe everything you read on the Internet or Wikipedia or whatever. When it comes to Garden City’s history it is often the same incorrect information being repeated. Early photographs and maps are a great help in narrowing down accurate dates for houses. Unfortunately, stories are told and handed down and like the telephone game we played as kids, the stories change with each telling. This makes the historian’s job very challenging as a series of conflicting inaccuracies often cloud a subject. Historians build on those historians who have gone before. Logic also plays a role so if something doesn’t make sense it’s probably wrong as in stating the house at 32 Cathedral Avenue was moved. As always, if you have a question about Garden City’s history you can call me and I’ll do my best to help you.

This Apostle House on Eleventh Street is the only Apostle to have been moved and it was moved twice. Once in 1902 so St. Mary’s School could expand and again in 1988.

This 1888 map of Garden City is very valuable as it shows every structure built up to that time. The Apostle that is circled is 32 Cathedral Avenue, where it still is today.

Camp Mills 100th Anniversary Commemorated

STORY BY JOHN ELLIS KORDES

As I drove down Clinton Road recently past the former Clinton Road Railroad Station and the monument to Camp Mills, I could not help but imagine what happed there 100 years ago. In August, Garden City today can appear as a sleepy bedroom community with a jogger here and a dog walker there. However, in August 1917 it was quite a different scene. Garden City had less than 2,000 residents then and less than 400 houses (today we have about 23,000 residents and over 6,500 houses). The beginning of the 20th Century saw Garden City as a rising star on Long Island. In 1899, the famous Garden City Golf Club’s 18 holes were completed. That same year Garden City became part of a new county - Nassau. The seat of government would be located within Garden City’s borders. In 1901, the third and most famous Garden City Hotel opened. In 1908, the Long Island Motor Parkway was begun and it was headquartered in Garden City. In 1910, the famous Doubleday Book Publishing Plant was built on Franklin Avenue. During this same period, two of the earliest airfields in the country were begun in Garden City, one east of Washington Avenue and south of Old Country Road and the other west of Nassau Boulevard and north of Stewart Avenue. In 1912, the two fields would merge east of Clinton Road as the Hempstead Plains Airfield (later renamed Hazelhurst Airfield). In 1914, war broke out in Europe and raged for years as America tried to stay out of it. By April 1917, it became clear that the United States had to step in to win this war. They called it the “Great War”, the “War to End All Wars” and “The World War”. Little did they know we would eventually have to number these wars. Thus, this one was called World War I. In August 1917, Camp Mills was set up in the southeast part of Garden

City south of the railroad tracks and east of Clinton Road. It was named for Brigadier General Albert L. Mills. The location was ideal due to the railroad and the airfield just to the north. Initially, the camp was made up of tents with an entrance at Locust Street. It consisted of National Guard units from every state in the Union. They came together and formed one division known as the “Rainbow Division”. One of the officers at the camp was Douglas MacArthur who became a famous general in World War II. While at the camp, residents from Hempstead, Garden City, Mineola and Westbury tried to do everything they could for the boys who numbered in the thousands. On Sundays (visiting day) it was estimated that over 50,000 people visited the troops. The logistics of that is mind boggling looking back as I drove down Clinton Road. Almost 3,000 of these young soldiers would be killed and over 13,000 would be wounded in the fierce fighting in Europe. In 1918, as the war dragged on, Camp Mills was made into a more permanent camp with hundreds of buildings being built. The war ended on November 11, 1918, with over 100,000 American soldiers killed in just over a year of the United States involvement. Millions died in the entire war on both sides. Unfortunately, the war did not “end all wars”. In fact, it sowed the seeds for a century of wars - World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and the Gulf War. A monument to Camp Mills is located just to the south of the former Clinton Road Railroad Station where those brave boys stepped off 100 years ago. The monument was placed there in 1941 just months before the United States entered World War II. How ironic. Next time you are in that area with your children stop and walk over to the monument and read the inscriptions. Ponder for a moment what happened there 100 years ago.

This house on Locust Street just west of Clinton Road was the commander’s house. It still exists today as a private home.

This 1941 monument to Camp Mills is all that’s left to remind the world that something on a huge scale happened there.

On July 14, 1918, one of the pilots who trained at Hazelhurst Airfield was shot down and killed in the war. He was 20 year old Quentin Roosevelt, the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. In his honor, Hazelhurst Airfield was renamed Roosevelt Airfield. He had left Harvard University to become a pilot when the U.S. entered the war in 1917.

Garden City lost six of its sons in WWI including William Bradford Turner. For his bravery in combat he was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. In 1919, Garden City’s new American Legion post was named the William Bradford Turner Post. There is a monument to these six soldiers from Garden City in front of the Middle School.

This candid shot shows activity at the Clinton Road Railroad Station. Note the trolley on the tracks that could shuttle people to the Garden City Railroad Station. Also, note the primitive movie camera in the center of the photo on a tripod.

Camp Mills in 1918 as hundreds of buildings had been built to make it a more permanent camp. By the mid-1920’s all the buildings were gone and todays’ houses were being built, as if it all never happened.

A marching band leads the troops down Clinton Road to the camp’s entrance at Locust Street on the east side of Clinton Road.

Another view of the troops marching into Camp Mills with spectators lining the route.

Contact: To learn more about or to participate in our Respect Life Ministry, please visit the Ministries Section on the Church of St. Joseph website: stjosephchurchgc.org/. Also, reach us at saintjosephrespectlife@gmail.com. Officers: Moderator – Rev. Prasanna W. Costa, Art and Ann O’Brien, Michael and Cathy O’Sullivan Purpose: St. Joseph’s Respect Life Ministry began in 1973 following the Supreme Court decisions, Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, which struck down the laws throughout our nation that protected the lives of preborn children. Our purpose is to work to overturn these decisions and, until such time, to promote alternatives to abortion in an effort to save babies’ lives, to provide support to their mothers and fathers, and to bring consolation and healing to those who

regret their abortions. In addition, we wish to restore to our culture a respect for the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death, including the infirmed, the disabled, and the elderly, and to work against the evils of infanticide, euthanasia, and embryonic stem cell research, which threaten the most vulnerable among us. For 43 years, dedicated St. Joseph parishioners and Garden City village residents have participated in many projects – from special Masses, prayer vigils and novenas to baby showers, noted speaker presentations, and Marches for Life in Washington, D.C. – all in an effort to safeguard and defend the sanctity of God’s gift of human life. We invite you to be part of our Respect Life Ministry. During a calendar year, there are many opportunities to join in this most worthy effort to build a Culture of Life in our society. GUIDE TO GARDEN CITY • Friday, October 20, 2017

Garden City News Photo and Essay Contest Winners A father’s dream, a daughter’s pride, a Village’s gifts

BY EILEEN MOYNAHAN FIRST PLACE WINNER I first loved Garden City because living here was the fulfillment of the dream of my father, who grew up poor and started working at 15 after graduating from high school, had for his family. He was particularly impressed that the village and school boundaries were nearly identical. This still contributes to our uniquely strong sense of identity. Once, when extolling the virtues of Garden City to a friend he added, “and they don’t allow movie theaters or door-

to-door sales, not even Good Humor trucks.” At age six, I didn’t quite see how these prohibitions were advantages, but Daddy’s belief in Garden City was so strong I accepted them as such. Garden City did not disappoint. I, my brother, and his children excelled in the great schools, and I loved all my friends, every day of school, almost all my teachers, and from opening day, the pool (which now offers Good Humor, without the dreaded truck!). Elsewhere, my shy mother might have been intimidated by wealthier, better educated neighbors, but she fit into this village, so focused on its children,

perfectly, and soon became a beloved and valued contributor to our activities. Proud to share her devotion to children, I have loved seeing “generations” of us grow up, both in person and through 60+ years of reading the Garden City News and the high school yearbooks. We know too well that Garden City families are not immune to tragic losses. At these times our connections are particularly felt, bringing comfort to the victims, pain to the comforters, and inspiration to us all.
