The 2021 lacrosse season promised to be unlike any other for so many reasons. After having their junior season cancelled due to the COVID pandemic, the senior boys and the underclassmen could not wait to get back to competitive play and opened their season at home on May 7 against a strong Port Washington team only 6 days after the football season ended with a Nassau County Championship. Due to the shortened season, the boys played some higher-classified schools they do not traditionally play due to school enrollment size. The Varsity team was again led by longtime coach Steve Finnell and assistant coaches Joe Jacovino and Tim Holman. The senior captains were Pierce Archer, Ryan Connolly, Gerard O’Connor and Bobby Seel. The team played with a lot of heart, and a number of players performed incredibly well. After a slow start to the season, the boys would go on an

11-game win streak to finish the season 13-3. The season was capped off by a defensively dominating win on Saturday, June 19, when the boys defeated Comsewogue High School by a score of 5-1 for the Long Island Class B Championship. Senior goalie Drew Quinn contributed 8 saves, and was named the game’s MVP. This was the program’s third Long Island Championship over the past four seasons. The amazing success of the program over the last fourteen years has led to the team winning 11 county, 7 Long island and three NY State Championships. Sadly, this year, there were no state playoffs due to the COVID pandemic shortening the length of the season. On attack the team was led by Ryan Connolly, Jack Downey, Tommy Engelke and Pat Gaven. Leading the midfield were seniors Gerard O’Connor, Bobby Seel and Terry Going, junior Luke Schmitt and soph

Patrick Blum, Henry Gibbons, Bryan Boccafola and Brandon Rosenblatt and freshman Aidan Considine and Dennis Fargione. The boys dedicated their season to senior classmate and friend Molly Madigan, and wore her initials on their helmets throughout the season.

Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving Team 2020–21

Seniors: Michael Reinhardt, Cameron Yuen, Aidan Gaffney The Garden City Boys Swim and Dive Team The Boys Varsity Swimming & Diving 2020–2021 season was one to remember. Under the leadership of Coach Anne Sullivan, the boys were one of the first of the high school teams to resume after the shutdown, many without access to a swimming pool since the prior season. Despite this hurdle, many of the boys swam personal best times in the condensed season and almost the whole team qualified for Divisions. At Counties,

the swimmers that qualified all did an outstanding job with fast swims and great relays. The team had two NY State qualifiers, Cameron Yuen (senior) and Christopher Reilly (junior). although states were canceled this year. The team wishes the graduating seniors all the best and a special congratulations to Cameron Yuen, as he heads to Tufts University to be a diver on their swim team. Go GC!

Emma Sutcliffe, Margaux Griffin, Kelly Brennan, Ava Charon, Lauren Oxenham, Sela Scarangella, Coach Reid Sclafani After being unable to play the 2020 season and having the 2021 season delayed and shortened due to COVID, the Garden City Varsity Girls Golf team came roaring back to end the season strong by placing second in the Twentieth Annual Nassau County tournament. This year the two-day championship took place on the Bethpage Yellow and Green courses where the top eight teams in the county competed. The GC Maroon team placed just eight strokes behind first place finisher Great Neck, and ahead of third and fourth place Manhasset and Jericho. Coach Reid Sclafani said “I am very proud of the performance by our team all year. And especially at the county tournament, where we were ranked fifth but finished second because all seven Garden City competitors scored better than their season average, a significant team accomplishment.” All-County honors were earned by senior captain Margaux Griffin, who

finished seventh place, and junior Ava Charon, who finished ninth place. Honorable Mention All-County Honors were earned by junior Emma Sutcliffe, who finished in thirteenth place, senior captain Kelly Brennan in sixteenth place, and junior Lauren Oxenham in nineteenth place. All-Conference honors were earned by senior captain Sela Scarangella and eighth-grader Haley Baschnagel. The successful performance at the County Championship was preceded by a solid regular season where GC Maroon finished with a 4-1 record (first in Conference) and GC White finished with a 2-2 record (third in Conference). As the Girls Golf team concludes another great season, they wish continued success to graduating seniors Kelly Brennan, Caroline Egan, Daria Gemmell, Margaux Griffin, Sela Scarangella and Lindsey Stevenson, who will all be missed.

GCHS Boys Baseball wins LI Championship

The Garden City High School Boys Varsity Baseball Team

The Garden City High School Varsity Baseball team pulled off something nobody thought possible heading into the 2021 season this Father's Day by winning the Long Island Championship defeating Huntington 5-3! It's only the second time this has been accomplished in the school's history with the first victory back in 2000. Under the leadership of Coaches Dave Izzo and Ray Chaputian everything

was beginning to click and then came Calhoun. The Colts had just steamrolled through 6 wins in a row crushing every team in its path. But Garden City was winning also-the Trojans were shaping into a solid team unit and so the table was set as Co-Captain Frank Santeramo, one of Newsday's top 100 players on Long Island was due in the rotation vs the undefeated Calhoun Colts. Frank pitched a gem- a com-

Photo by Ed Rotondo plete game shutout allowing only 3 hits striking out 9 and walking zero. This was a true turning point for Garden City stunning the undefeated Colts with a performance that now set doubt in their minds. The win also gave a huge advantage to Garden City securing all tie breaker situations as long as GC remained tied for 2nd place. They did, and that tie breaker earned by beating Calhoun came in and paid off big time giving Garden City a first round bye to the semi finals and home field advantage. Who knew how big a game that was and how it would shape the road to being Long Island Champions! The entire pitching staff was an

integral part of this incredible season. Starting pitchers Pat Heber and Co-Captain Aidan Magnotta pitched beautifully while keeping Garden City in every game. Huge contributions from freshman Gabe Beschloss in the playoffs and Championship game by maintaining his composure and closing out the games. Joe Infante raked all season and was the cool, calm catcher behind the dish calling games like a pro. Garden City also got a nice surprise with another freshman, SS Jack Fanning. His range and smoothness is something to see along with a nice swing and the ability to make routine ground balls a challenge for infielders to throw him out. The team was well balanced with speedsters like Co-Captain Joey Frandina, Francesco Ingrassia, and Pete Halloran roaming the outfield as balls didn't stand a chance of hitting the ground. With Gabe Elmokian at the hot corner the left side of the infield was secure. At first base Pat Heber made some amazing plays and his bat was another asset for GC. Joe Wood playing a combo of second base and right field showed his versatility. Garden City kept a solid defense all season long. Contributions were made by second baseman and pitcher Chris Blum, along with pitchers Matt Mohen, Simon Ferris and Liam Rooney. Infielders Charles Iovino, Connor Brock, and Matt Tusiani-Eng, as well as outfielders Anthony Remick, Ronnie Marciano, Richie Longo, and catcher TJ Krieg all played roles in making this a winning team.

What is Supported Independence?

Supported Independence is the fastest growing route most breakaway advisors are using to associate themselves with independent broker dealers. Many advisors know the benefits of going indy … higher payout, tax benefits, potential for much greater valuation of their business in terms of succession planning, more control over their business, etc., etc. So why haven’t more advisors gone independent? Well, because there are hassles of course. From securing office space and staffing to large upfront costs for furniture, technology, and telephones, is it really worth it in the end? What if you could get the benefits of going independent without the hassles? That’s Supported Independence.

GOING INDEPENDENT is all about FREEDOM. The GC Blue Waves finishing their season! Second and third-grade girls intermurals had another great year!

GCHS Girls Cross Country Team wins Division, Conference Championships The Garden City High School Girls Cross Country Team had a victorious and memorable 2021 season under the leadership of Coach Seth Messier. Varsity runners included Alexa Andron, Sydney Chean, Grace Duffy, Victoria Ernst, Nicole Mejia, Fiona Pfaff, Emily Pogozelski, Kate Pogozelski, Lauren Sullivan, Deanna Turner and Kimberly Villoni. The girls had an undefeated season with a record of 13-0 versus teams Calhoun, Long Beach, Great Neck North/South, Jericho, Bellmore, Sewanhaka and more. They were named Division 2A and Conference 2 Champions and placed 4th in the Section VIII Nassau County Championship race on April 17. The team qualified for the Section VIII Long Island Championships on April 24, placing 5th as a team. Junior Emily Pogozelski placed 11th in this race achieving

a trifecta of titles: All Section VIII, All County and All Conference. Emily had an accomplished season running her personal best 5K at 19 minutes and 32 seconds. Victoria Ernst and Fiona Pfaff were named All County. Alexa Andron, Sydney Chean, Grace Duffy, Nicole Mejia, Kate Pogozelski and Lauren Sullivan were named All Conference. Our Junior Varsity team worked extraordinarily hard this year. They had an amazing season placing in the top 2 teams at each conference meet and they are very motivated for next season. Sadly, the team is saying goodbye to ten graduating seniors. These amazing and dedicated young women will be truly missed. To quote Coach Messier on the success of the team this year, “it was the best year of coaching I’ve experienced in 23 years...and I will miss the seniors dearly.”

GC Trojan Football has come to be synonymous with dedication, preparation, and above all a winning tradition. Under possibly the most extreme circumstances the 2020–21 squad persevered through COVID testing, protocols, and a modified schedule to produce another amazing (8-0) undefeated season. Enduring through speculation of cancellations, infection, and/or opposing team forfeit, the GC Trojans just wanted to play! Each victory saw contributions from multiple players and everyone seemed to step up at just the right time. The boys capped off this unforgettable run with another Nassau County Championship playing rival MacArthur to a (14-8) victory. Most of these boys are lifelong teammates, many having started in the GC Thunder Football program as youths

and discovered their passion not only for the game of football, but also for the camaraderie that develops between the players, coaches, and parents. An unforgettable experience for a unique group of players! Good luck to all the boys in the years to come! GO TROJANS!
