Getting ready for spring watering season
SUBMITTED BY
THE PLAINVIEW WATER DISTRICT
Spring is here, and as Plainview-Old Bethpage residents are itching to get back to attending to their yards, the Plainview Water District (PWD) would like to remind the community about the importance of water conservation. Water consumption in the POB community nearly triples during the spring and summer, and this can almost exclusively be attributed to residential irrigation systems. Conservation will not only save residents money and reduce unnecessary water waste but will significantly decrease the strain on our infrastructure and sole-source aquifer.
“During the spring and summer months, the Plainview-Old Bethpage community’s water demand increases significantly due to irrigation systems starting back up,” said PWD Commissioner Marc Laykind. “The amount of water needed for your lawn varies substantially from April through September. We ask residents to be mindful and to monitor their irrigation controller schedules to appropriately reflect the weather and temperature. Practicing these habits has the potential to save tens of thousands of gallons of water from being unnecessarily wasted.”
Simply setting an irrigation clock in April and then turning it off once the season ends in the Fall will waste thousands of gallons of water per household as a lawn’s water needs drastically change from month to month, especially during long stretches of rainy weather. Installing a smart irrigation controller is the best way to remove the guesswork and burden of remembering to alter watering schedules. Smart controllers use a Wi-Fi connection to tap into local weather stations to automatically adjust watering schedules based on local weather conditions. Another effective means of better managing water usage is to ensure your irrigation system has a rain sensor installed, so your sprinklers don’t turn on during or after a rain event.
“There is a common misconception that it is necessary to water your lawn very often during the warmer months,” said PWD Commissioner Andrew Bader. “In reality, the average lawn only needs about an inch of water a week to remain healthy, and overwatering promotes shallow roots, which makes your grass more susceptible to burning on hot days. We encourage POB residents to exercise best irrigation and conservation practices to help Preserve Plainview while saving money on their water bills.”
The Plainview OldBethpage community can do their part by also being mindful of Nassau County’s Lawn
Watering Ordinances, which dictate when homeowners can and cannot water their lawns. The ordinance stipulates that even-numbered homes and non-numbered homes can only water on even-numbered days, odd-numbered homes can only water on odd-numbered days, and no lawn watering can be done between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on any day.
In addition, residents can also consider turning back the amount of time each zone in their irrigation system waters. Removing just a few minutes of watering from each zone will have a significant impact on water usage, which will ultimately be reflected in the residents’ bills.
“With the vast technology and tools that we now have at our disposal, we can stop wasteful watering habits,” said PWD Commissioner Michael Chad. “We want the POB community to enjoy their healthy landscapes and green lawns, but we ask that they do so while being conscious of their water consumption. Water conservation benefits our environment, our community’s sustainability and saves our residents money.”
