Chamber raises over $14K to help fire victims BY RIKKI MASSAND
In response to the devastating fire on Wednesday night, April 13, that destroyed seven homes in Syosset’s Hidden Ridge condo development, the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce immediately took to fundraising efforts to help victims. A donation page was put online by the chamber on April 14, the day after the fire. In a matter of less than two weeks donations poured in from over 200 Chamber member businesses and the Syosset, Woodbury and Jericho communities at large. On Thursday April 28 at the development, checks totaling $14,525 were presented to the seven families who lost their homes at Hidden Ridge by the Chamber board of directors. One-hundred percent of the funds the chamber raised was

Drucker Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D - Plainview) joined Harry Chapin’s son, Josh, and leaders of Long Island Cares - The Harry Chapin Food Bank at the organization’s Essential Market in Bethpage on Monday, May 2 to unveil legislation that would designate July 16 as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. Not only would recognizing the acclaimed musician and humanitarian generate much-needed awareness about the prevalence of food insecurity in our region, Legislator Drucker’s
proposal - which is co-sponsored by the Legislature’s seven-member Minority Caucus - would also direct the County to partner with Long Island Cares and local community organizations to host an annual, three-week long food drive starting on July 16. Donations will also be accepted for Baxter’s Pet Pantry, a Long Island Cares initiative focused upon delivering emergency pet food and supplies to struggling families. “Harry Chapin distinguished himself as a musical storyteller whose gift See page 14

Green, who has lived in Syosset over the past 23 years. The families who lost their homes attended the presentation on April 28. ”The Chamber contacted the HOA soon after the fire occurred and they had a tremendous response from the community, with donations from so many people who wanted to help those affected. Russell and the board of directors joined us today to present individual checks to our families, and then a ceremonial check of $14,525,” Klein said. School registration goes digital in Jericho BY GEORGE HABER
Parents registering their children for school or recertifying residency for students entering middle school or high school will be required to submit their documentation digitally, it was announced at the Jericho Board of Education meeting April 28. Co-Principal Joseph Prisinzano presented the plan to move applications
away from paper submissions to an all-digital format. The new format, he said, will enable children to enter school in one or two days after digital documentation, compared to as many as five days with the paper submission. Prisinzano said if a child is shown to live full-time in a house in the community,“they have a right to attend the school.” He estimated that seventy perSee page 14

Legislator presents check to Jericho Schools BY GEORGE HABER Nassau County Legislator Josh Lafazan presented a $75,000 check to the Jericho School District at its April 28th School Board meeting for the purchase of one or more “anatomy tables,” which are state-of-the-art equipment for training doctors and surgeons. The funds, from Nassau County, will enable the district to purchase one or more of the tables, which use 3-D imagery and virtual reality to give students an opportunity to “operate” in a virtual environment. The tables, which cost between $38,000 and $100,000 each, are found in medical schools; only a few are in high schools around the country. In presenting the check, Lafazan said that during the pandemic applications to medical schools increased dramatically. He said he hoped that the purchase of the new technology “will enable Jericho kids to have access to this incredible resource” and inspire them to pursue careers in health care.
Casino bus trip The Catholic Daughters of the Americas will be hosting a bus trip to Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem, PA, on Tuesday, May 31. Cost is $45 per person which includes the driver's tip and a $35 give back for slots play. Please arrive at 8:30 a.m. Return will be approximately 8:30 p.m. Parking is at 999 South Oyster Bay Road (dead end). For reservations, please call Barbara at 516-935-5576. Please make checks payable to CDA. The first to play is the first on the bus.
Jericho Superintendent Grishman thanks Nassau Legislator Lafazan for Nassau County check to help school purchase advanced medical technology.

Freedomland U.S.A. was a shortlived amusement park that was open in the Baychester area of the Bronx from 1960–1964. On Wednesday, May 18th, the theme park that celebrated American History will come alive at the Jericho Library through the eyes of author Michael Virgintino. “I grew up in the Bronx, six blocks from the now defunct theme park,” said Virgintino now a Syosset resident. “It was a great place to go as a kid because it had seven themed areas all dedicated to the concept of American history.” Virgintino, who wrote a book called “Freedomland U.S.A. The Definitive History,” which was published in 2019, will discuss his book at the event and display several artifacts from the amusement park. “I plan to show my two large binders full of old photos of the park, which contain the early construction stages as well as celebrity entertainers who frequented the venue.” He said that he will show off 20% of his vast collection of park memorabilia, which includes an array of felt pennants, an original picture of the Three Stooges, various ashtrays, which were a signature item at the time, and a piece of brick from the original building of the park. “In my actual collection, I have so

many items dating back to the time of the theme-park’s existence, which include over 3,000 photos, ornaments and displays that were used and even original 45 RPM records.” Virgintino said that the Jericho Library will be his first stop on his tristate tour of discussing his book and his childhood growing up near the amusement park. “I had been giving presentations until Covid hit in 2020, and then I took a twoyear hiatus,” said Virgintino. “Jericho will be my first stop and I plan to travel to do presentations in New Jersey, the Bronx, Westchester and Rockland Counties.” Virgintino said he also is working on another book centered around the theme park that will be released at the end of the year. In the book, he will have information from archives around the country dedicated to the park as well as several interviews from park employees. The Jericho Library currently has a display in their front lobby containing memorabilia from the park, which includes signature glassware, banners and old newspaper articles about the venue. The author’s presentation will take place on May 18 at the Library starting at 2:30 p.m. To find out more information, you can visit the jericholibrary.org.

Town launches Irish History forum bike safety poster contest on Civil War
The Town of Oyster Bay has launched a new poster contest on bike safety, open to 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. “Many residents have shared their concerns about bike safety here in the Town of Oyster Bay with us, as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said. “We launched this poster contest to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.” To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster must also include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl.com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, showcased in winners’ hometowns, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. All entries will be dis-
played in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website. “I encourage all 5th Graders in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity to not only become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, but to also learn more about town government and be recognized in their hometowns,” said Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “The entries in our last poster contest were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs.” Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@oysterbay-ny. gov. In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a high-resolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown.com/bikesafety. The submission deadline is Tuesday, May 31 at 11:59 p.m., and winners will be announced during a meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board on Tuesday, June 14.

County legislator seeks to honor Harry Chapin From page 1 for capturing the human condition in song made him one of our most beloved and relatable entertainers,” Legislator Drucker said. “His talents as a musical storyteller are only eclipsed by his desire to help others and his remarkable mission to end hunger here on Long Island and around the world. I can think of no better way of celebrating his life’s work than by supporting the cause he so passionately advocated for.” “We are very grateful to Legislator Drucker for proposing that July 16th be commemorated as Harry Chapin Day in Nassau County. Long Islanders had great love and respect for the way that Harry used his celebrity statis and global platform to call for and to hunger during his lifetime,” Long Island Cares CEO Paule Pachter said. “Sadly, Harry’s lifetime ended on July 16, 1981 at the age of 38 but, he left the world his music, stories and one historic Long
Island organization that continues his work and social advocacy four decades later.” “I’m sure our beloved founder would be thrilled with this honor,” Long Island Cares Board President Dave Cassaro said. “Beyond that, he would be even more thrilled that Long Island Cares continues to fight to end not only food insecurity, but also the root causes of hunger.” “My dad really brought a relentless positive energy. When you think of him, he was inspirational - and he was inspired by love, and he was inspired by doing the right thing,” Harry’s son Josh Chapin said. “One of the last things I did in Nassau County with him was to go to the beginning of that [New York Islanders] Stanley Cup run… and I think about collective energy that is so beautiful in a sports arena and the inspiration that comes from sacrifice and working together and being greater than the sum of your parts.”
Chamber raises over $14K to help fire victims From page 1 to help fellow residents in Syosset.” “We immediately held discussions and decisions had to be made on how our Chamber could best help out. After much discussion we set up an online page to have donations submitted to help the families. Initially I did not know what the response to it would be, but the next thing you know we reached 200 donors and the check amount – $14,525. The Chamber is covering all the fees that were involved in collecting this total and the full amount is going toward the seven families,” he explained. Green explains that for over 23 years the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce has been dedicated to promoting local businesses as well as the betterment of the entire community, “To present this check for the seven Hidden Ridge families, I was joined by several chamber board members including Vice President Mike Gallo from Home Depot of Syosset, Pastor Rebecca Sheridan of Faith Lutheran Church on Jackson Avenue; Wendy Weiss of TechTime and Chamber Networking and Membership Chair Alan Goldberg, president of Water Solutions of Long Island. Immediately after the fire, Goldberg put the dire situation at the top of his
personal and professional priorities. He coordinated and worked with fellow chamber members to help organize the fundraising mechanism, and implement a social media campaign. Goldberg said he’s proud of how the chamber was able to step up and take a leadership role to help local families in the wake of the fire. “We are a business-oriented organization but we also have a community component demonstrated by our annual Street Fair, Holiday Lighting event, and participating in honoring our local veterans. In addition the chamber partners with other local nonprofits and charitable efforts. It was deeply touching to speak with the Hidden Ridge families who received monies collected through the chamber’s efforts, and to feel their genuine gratitude,” he explained. Tim Lau, head of Hidden Ridge at Syosset’s HOA board of directors, noted, “On behalf of Hidden Ridge we thank the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce for their great generosity and support for the community.” Lau is Syosset-based real estate professional and board member of the Chinese American Association of Syosset (CAAS). He added, “The Chamber’s responsiveness and swift action to help people really makes a difference.”
Grass is greener on Amazon site
Workers at the Amazon warehouse construction site have been planting landscaping around the facility. BY GEORGE HABER Countering concerns of local residents that its new, huge warehouse and distribution center on Robbins Lane in Syosset would be a concrete eyesore in the neighborhood, Amazon has recently been doing extensive landscaping around the. building. Workers have been planting trees, bushes and flowers on ground off Rob-
bins Lane and the LIE service lane. “They’re clearly trying to beautify what is in fact a massive concrete complex in a residential neighborhood,”said one long-time resident of East Birchwood in Jericho, the neighborhood closest to the warehouse. Workers would not comment on when the plantings would be completed but said the planting is “an ongoing process.”

cent of parents registering or recertifying residency will submit their required documentation digitally, while the rest will not. “We’ll work with them to enable the digital submission to be done,” he said. Also at the meeting. Superintendent
Hank Grishman announced that starting Tuesday. The district will restore pre-pandemic activities, including play dates, outdoor activities, and elimination of health checks. “At the same time,” he said, “we will continue to monitor rates of any outbreak and be ready to enforce recommended protocols as appropriate.”

Dispatch from Living the Nomadic Life, a Global Odyssey: Mexico BY ERIC LEIBERMAN AND SARAH FALTER TRAVEL FEATURES SYNDICATE GOINGPLACESFARANDNEAR.COM Eric and Sarah are on a 6-month around-the-world sabbatical, joining a huge movement of young people who are choosing to live the nomadic life (at least for a time) and travel or work remotely in places, becoming immersed in local life and culture. They are filing these dispatches periodically. Here’s their report after a month living in Mexico before moving on to Asia. We finally did it–rented out our house, packed a tiny sliver of our possessions into four packing cubes inside a large backpack, strapped on our water shoes and hit the road for the adventure of a lifetime–six months of uninterrupted travel! We have now been traveling together for exactly five weeks and we’re delighted to share that we still like each other!! After visiting our beloved family in LA and NY, we spent the first month of our trip traveling throughout Mexico. We began in Mexico City (for a brief bit, then later returned), where the ridiculously long lists of food recommendations did not disappoint. Then to Oaxaca with our travel bestie Julie, where colorful winding streets all lead to delicious mole. We did an awesome AirBnB experience where we learned about all seven types of mole and that the labor intensive process plus cost of ingredients dictates when they are consumed (for example verde every day after school, up through negro, which can take a week to prepare for special occasions
Our Oaxacan beach tour takes us to La Bocana, a tiny town with just two restaurants, one boutique hotel and several local women who provide mud scrubs (with the special mud from this beach) daily. Our AirBnB is a mere 50 yards from a spectacular long stretch of beach that feels like it is all ours © Eric Leiberman/ goingplacesfarandnear.com like weddings). And we tried this very delicious treat in Oaxaca called a Tlayuda!?!? It’s like a giant pizza/ crepe layered with beans, cheese, lettuce, meat, and then folded and roasted over an open charcoal oven (enjoyed with a multitude of salsas). And speaking of SALSA, Sarah’s new obsession is salsa macha. It’s a deep and bold, sharp and spicy salsa, and its made with crushed PEANUTS!? It is divine and we ordered it with pretty much every meal from that point forward. We’d come to learn that this sort of deep, bold and soulful flavor was uniquely Oaxacan and was pervasive throughout their history, cuisine and art. They have a fascinating history of protest and human rights advocacy that permeates the art all throughout the city - from the large format
street murals to the gallery walls in fine art museums. It is dark and expressive with lots of skulls, fire, protest depiction and political symbols. Learning more about this history brought new meaning to the intense flavors of mole and mezcal. We continued our journey on a 7-hour drive almost entirely on mountain roads with dramatic switchbacks, to the coast of Oaxaca (Eric drove and Sarah passed out on drowsy Dramamine). Over the next week, we made stops at three beach towns: Puerto Escondidio, Mazunte, and Playa Bocana. Puerto Escondido is distinguished for its cliff-like coast line and amazing street entertainment (imagine our surprise when a man with a guitar and an amp shows up on the beach, usually a nightmare scenario at any

Bay Area park, and ends up providing the most perfect sunset vibes)! Mazunte gave us some good laughs because its “hippie” vibe is out of control and almost cartoonish; you’re weird if you actually wear shoes around town, on hikes, and if you don’t like acai and bullet proof coffee you need to get your ass out of there. But, thankfully, we (gladly) dabble in some aspects of the hippie lifestyle, so the vegan nomz, acai bowls & a two-hour (very stinky) yoga class were a welcome change-of-pace. Eric even bought a turquoise pendant (maybe a Buddhist symbol? We’re not sure; we’re posers) that he wears most days now as a lucky charm :) And the last stop on the Oaxacan beach tour was La Bocana; a true surprise gem. It is a tiny town with just two restaurants, one boutique hotel and several local women who provide mud scrubs (with the special mud from this beach) daily. Our cute little AirBnB was a mere 50 yards from a spectacular long stretch of beach that felt like it was all ours. And when we started exploring the beach, we’d come to discover that a 15-minute walk up the beach led to the intersection of a gorgeous river with the ocean; which was utterly picturesque and made for a best-of-both-worlds situation of enjoying the beach while swimming in the calm of the river. During our short stay at La Bocana beach, we made both sunset and sunrise pilgrimages to this beautiful spot. Anyone who knows Eric knows he can’t resist a sunrise/sunset swim. And we ate delicious camarones a la diabla (shrimp in spicy sauce) and Continued on next page

Dispatch from Living the Nomadic Life Continued from previous page fresh langosta from that river basically every meal there, happily. The return to Mexico City was a happy one because we were excited to spend more time exploring and Sarah’s mom, Marci, came to join for a week! Major highlights included visiting a house designed by architect Luis Barragan, discovering more neighborhoods and parks and going to the Mexico vs. El Salvador World Cup qualifying futbol game (where we tried nearly every food item sold in the stadium.. even Cup of Noodles with shrimp & hot sauce which yes, is cold and soggy by the time they sell it to you at your seat!) Another gem we discovered in Mexico City is the weekly shut down of major streets on Sundays (up to 50km we learned) to promote safe and uninterrupted biking/running/rollerblading. We stumbled upon this by accident in our first CDMX stint, and were so excited to show Sarah’s mom! We went basically the entire route out to the big park, down to the neighborhood of Coyoacan, and back. Mexico City is truly as lovely and vibrant as everyone says it is. It’s like the best of both worlds of East and West Coast US cities; it has the serendipitous cosmopolitan feel of NYC with the wide open green spaces of LA/ SF. Everyone is in love with Mexico City these days and it’s obvious why. Last stop on the tour landed us in San Miguel de Allende, a shorter, 3-4 hour, drive from Mexico City. San Miguel is a very charming town, known for its colonial architecture which drew many artists in the 20th century. It’s a must
to find a terrace to enjoy the sunset, taking in the gorgeous pink church and red rooftops while obliging every other couple’s request for a photo (Eric is a hot commodity because he takes multiple angles and never skimps on the portrait mode). Eric did finally succumb to the first round of food poisoning of the trip here (which is shocking given what he’d eaten in the previous 4+ weeks), though he recovered in a day and we’re happy to report that Sarah’s stomach of steel is still going strong (knock on wood). At this writing, we’re in Seoul after a failed attempt at Vietnam entry (and over 50 straight hours of travel), but we’re super stoked to begin the Asia chapter of our travels, where Sarah’s love for headbands and bucket hats is bound to flourish. It’s crazy and refreshing how “home” has become having each other, and our backpacks….
Hotel AMATTE Brings Wellness Community Concept to San Miguel de Allende SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE, Mexico The newest hotel in San Miguel de Allende opened this past December, elevating the wellness offering in this city, which continuously tops global lists of favorite places to visit. The AMATTE Wellnest Community was built under the guidance of Japanese architect Shinji Miyazaki using sustainable materials mostly based on chukum, a limestone-based stucco mixed with resin from chukum trees, semi-hardwood thorny trees native to the Yucatán. The design incorporates the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, or accepting
imperfections. Each of the spaces in this “nest” was created thinking about how guests will experience it, from the timeless beauty of its architecture, bold furniture pieces, sensual rain showers and the pleasing circuit guests make on the terrace, one of the most admired in San Miguel and an ideal spot for contemplating the region’s exquisite sunsets. “The concept of AMATTE Wellnest Community is to provide a space where its guests and visitors can enter a ‘nest’ of well-being, enjoyment and good living,” said Carlos Moreno, General Manager. The sweeping view from the 34-room main hotel entrance up to reception inspires guests to climb the 71 steps that lead them to a space of ultimate luxury and comfort. (Guests can also use an elevator.) AMATTE Wellnest Community offers a terrace with orchard; a dipping pool; fitness center with Life fitness equipment; a spa; a wine cellar, or cava; mixology bars and two restaurants — Piso 71, serving breakfast and lunch, and the flagship HACMANS restaurant, designed by renowned Chef Drew Deckman, who has been awarded a Michelin star. HACMANS’ sustainable and farm-to-table menu is cooked in firewood. The hotel concierge can arrange activities both on and off the property, such as vineyard tours, horseback riding, balloon flights and visits to hot springs and the UNESCO Heritage site of Santuario de Atotonilco. AMATTE Wellnest Community is located on a hillside, on the east side of Salida a Real Querétaro #168, 10 min-
utes from the town’s main garden. The hotel provides complimentary transportation to the center of San Miguel de Allende. Nightly room rates start at $265 USD. The closest airport is Querétaro Intercontinental (QRO), about a 45-minute drive away, the property also provides transfers to and from Guanajuato International Airport (BJX) near León and Mexico City International (MEX). San Miguel de Allende, located in the Bajío region of Mexico’s Guanajuato state, is home to a melting-pot population of locals and hundreds of expat residents of 63 nationalities. Renowned for its picturesque cobblestone streets, colonial architecture and perfect natural lighting, the city is a popular playground for artists of all stripes. Its colonial-era traditions, both religious and secular, provide the perfect setting to experience authentic and vibrant Mexican culture. 3 Free Life-Improving Resources BY MARY HUNT If you are generally wary of free stuff, I’m right there with you. Most of the time, I’ve found that free stuff is like bait. It’s a tasty morsel, a big tease with the clear intent of getting us to part with money we have no intention of parting with to get whatever it is that’s “free.” But now and then, free is truly free with no strings attached. And when it’s something I find useful in my life, well, that’s a happy find. Today I have three truly free things for you to consider. There’s a good chance you’ll find them downright awesome!
MARCO POLO
Marco Polo (marcopolo.me/relationships/) is a phone app that combines the best of texting, social media and video chats -- all in one private, easy-to-use app. Marco Polo is the video chat app that brings you closer to the people who matter most. It’s not the same as Face-
Time, Skype or Zoom. It’s in real time, without all the hassles. For example, even though you may not be with your grandchild, he can pick up the phone anytime and just say, “Grandma, I love you.” Or you can all get together at one time. You and your family and/or circle of friends can have conversations in real life with no ads, no hassles. Marco Polo is different from typical social media apps because it is real, trusted and built to be good for you. Unlike many apps, Marco Polo does not sell user data for advertising. Marco Polo isn’t about likes or social comparisons. This is an app that parents actually want their families to use. Marco Polo is vastly more practical than video calls. You never play phone tag, and you don’t have to schedule blocks of time just to say hi. Marco Polo gives you tone, context and certainty that your message was heard.
BUSYKID
BusyKid (busykid.com/) is an ingenios website that takes the idea of teaching kids the value of money with a job board and digitizes it while including the concepts of sharing and saving. Simply go to the site, open a free account and then add your kids to it. Next, choose from a list of chores to assign them, along with a deadline. For each chore or job, you also need to set points that your child earns upon completion. The points become a “currency system” that BusyKid intends to use to teach children more about money. Children are free to save, spend or share the points they earn. And the “spend” is linked to rewards, like a bedtime story or anything they want from Amazon, which you get to add. BusyKid also offers mobile apps.

Enthusiastically thanking Moms on Mother’s Day! BY CLAIRE LYNCH Mother’s Day is on Sunday, May 8, and this year one actress in particular has been known for speaking publicly about the joys of motherhood. “Mamma Mia!” actress Amanda Seyfried has two children with husband Thomas Sadoski. In March 2017, the couple announced the birth of their first child, daughter Nina. Son Thomas was born in September 2020. Pennsylvanian Amanda Michelle Seyfried was born on December 3, 1985, and raised in Allentown. Her mother, Ann Seyfried, is an occupational therapist and her father, Jack Seyfried, is a pharmacist. She began modeling at 11 and started acting at 15 playing the role of Lucy Montgomery on the CBS soap opera “As the World Turns” from 1999 to 2001 and Joni Stafford on the ABC TV soap opera “All My Children” in 2003. Seyfried acted in the teen comedy “Mean Girls” in 2004 and played Lilly Kane on the UPN TV series “Veronica Mars” from 2004 to 2006. Seyfried had supporting roles in independent films such as “Nine Lives” in 2005, playing the role of Samantha, and “Alpha Dog” in 2006. Additionally, she portrayed Sarah Henrickson on the HBO series “Big Love” that ran from 2006 to 2011. Seyfried also had parts in the 2008 horror film “Solstice,” the romantic drama “Dear John” in 2010 and the romantic comedy “Letters to Juliet” which also came out in 2010. In Italy on a pre-honeymoon, Seyfried’s character finds that thousands of letters to Juliet left in her Verona courtyard are typically answered by the secretaries of Juliet. Amanda Seyfried is perhaps best known for her role of Sophie in “Mamma Mia!” the movie which came out in 2008. The movie was an adaptation of the musical and she starred in her first leading role opposite Meryl Streep. Seyfried and Dominic Cooper played the roles of Sophie Sheridan and Sky Rymand and they were joined by Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård and Colin Firth playing Sophie’s three possible dads: Sam, Bill and Harry. Throughout the movie viewers wondered who would walk Sophie up the aisle. Amanda Seyfried also played Sophie in the sequel called “Mamma Mia!:
Here We Go Again” which came out in 2018. Cher played the grandmother of the character played by Seyfried in “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” so it was amusing indeed. As a child Seyfried’s earliest dreams were of becoming a singer. Occasionally her family would go to New York City to watch musicals and she was so impressed by them. She’s always loved singing and hoped to make a career of it. Singing in the “Mamma Mia!” movies gave her the chance to show off her singing skills. She does a great job of singing “Dancing Queen” in the movie with Christine Baranski, Julie Walters and Pierce Brosnan dancing along behind her. Seyfried sang in her role of Cosette in “Les Misérables” and she actually trained in opera singing until she was 17. In 2003 Seyfried graduated from Allentown’s William Allen High School. She has an older sister, Jennifer Seyfried, who was a musician in the Philadelphia rock band called “Love City.” Amanda Seyfried enrolled at Fordham University in the fall of 2003 but she chose to focus on her acting career and didn’t attend Fordham when she went for a screen test and was offered her role in “Mean Girls.” She hasn’t won an Oscar yet but Seyfried’s portrayal of Marion Davies in “Mank” earned her an Academy Award nomination last year for Best Supporting Actress. In that film she plays Hollywood starlet Marion Davies, the mistress of media mogul William Randolph Hearst. She started dating “The Last Word” co-star Thomas Sadoski in 2016. They had met the prior year when they both worked on the off-Broadway play “The Way We Get By” but both were involved with other people at the time. Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski married in a private ceremony in March 2017 in Topanga, Calif., and celebrated at a brunch in Los Angeles. In 2014 Seyfried decided to buy a renovated farmhouse in the Catskills in upstate New York even though her manager wondered why she needed it. That home came in handy when Covid19 started and she and her husband decided to leave New York City and live upstate full-time. Seyfried says she’s felt more relaxed living upstate and

Seyfried and Sadoski’s farm has lots of animals - there are horses, goats, dogs, turtles, a rooster and a donkey named Gus. Seyfried likes that she doesn’t even have to get on the train and go to the city. The farmhouse lets her get away when she isn’t working on her Hollywood movies whether the filming is in the U.S. or on some small Greek islands. It gives her the chance to refresh and recharge when she’s in nature. Plus her daughter goes to school upstate. Seyfried treasures her privacy. Having her children go to the public schools near her home in upstate New York is a priority for her and in between making her movies she enjoys a normal family life. She makes a point of saying that on typical days she doesn’t have breakfast in bed and isn’t chauffeured around. In interviews Amanda Seyfried has explained that her mother lives with them as their nanny so she has childcare help. She’s been quoted saying, “My life is awesome because she is the third parent for us. I am so lucky, I know I am.” “I love being a mother. I love my family so much. I couldn’t be more in

awe of my life.” “I definitely want more babies. Maybe three? Or four? Or five?” “It’s crazy, because I was a kid back then, so Meryl Streep was more maternal. But now I have a kid, so we relate as moms.” “When you have a kid, everything kind of changes and your priorities do change.” “When you value your family over anything else you’re always going in the right direction.” Happy Mother’s Day to one and all!

Angry Al and Me BY TOM MARGENAU I get lots of emails from my readers. Most are from nice people who have questions about their particular Social Security situation. I like responding to these people and helping them out. Then there are those guys (and it’s almost always guys) who rant and rave and gripe and groan about some perceived injustice involving Social Security. Their emails are long, usually filled with lots of foul language, capital letters, exclamation points and bold text. I can just imagine the venom spewing from their angry body down to their fingertips and then onto the keyboard as they write these missives. Even though I know they are just venting, I usually like to give them the courtesy of a reply. I figure if I can help them understand the program, it might help them see the light and change their minds about whatever their issue is. But that doesn’t always work. Here is an email exchange I had with one irate guy recently. I’ll call him Angry Al. (By the way, I cleaned up his remarks and deleted all scatological references!) Angry Al: “People who work for Social Security, just like all government employees, are incompetent fools who couldn’t get a real job in the private sector. I have a badly torn tendon in my arm. I applied for Social Security disability benefits, and they told me I wasn’t eligible.” (His rant went on for several more paragraphs, but this was the gist of his complaints.) Columnist Tom: “I certainly don’t agree with your assessment of government employees. But I’ll stick to the facts of your case. I obviously don’t know everything about your situation. But I can tell you this: The law says that to get disability benefits, you must have a physical or mental impairment that is so severe that it will keep you from doing any kind of job for at least a year. Or it must be a condition that is terminal. I just don’t think a torn tendon is a severe enough impairment to qualify for disability benefits.” Angry Al: “It had nothing to do with my tendon. They told me I didn’t have enough Social Security quarters. How can that be? Except for some recent years of unemployment, I’ve been working all my life.” Columnist Tom: “OK, now I think I understand why your disability claim was denied. The law says that to qualify for disability benefits, you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years. So, I’m guessing you simply didn’t meet that insured status requirement.” Angry Al: “Well, now I can tell you’re just as dumb as the current batch of Social Security idiots. If I’m not insured, then how come they just told me that I can file for reduced retirement benefits
when I turn 62 later this year?” Columnist Tom: “That’s because there are different insured status rules for retirement benefits. The ‘recent work’ rules -- that ‘five out of the last 10’ stuff -- doesn’t apply to retirement benefits. So even though you are not eligible for disability benefits, you will be able to get retirement benefits when you turn 62.” Angry Al: “Well, I know lots of people who are getting disability benefits from Social Security, and they never paid a dime into the system.” Columnist Tom: “You’re just plain wrong about that. There is nobody getting a disability benefit from Social Security who hasn’t worked and paid Social Security taxes, usually for a minimum of 10 years, or is a dependent of someone who has worked and paid taxes. You might be confusing Social Security disability benefits with Supplemental Security Income disability benefits. SSI is a federal welfare program that pays a small monthly stipend to poor people who are over age 65 or who are disabled. You don’t have to work and pay Social Security taxes to qualify for SSI.” Angry Al: “Don’t lecture me about government programs. We all know there are lots of people who sneak across the border then walk into a Social Security office and get all kinds of government benefits!” Columnist Tom: “Again, you’re just plain wrong about that. To get any kind of Social Security or Supplemental Security Income benefits, you must either be a U.S. citizen, or you must be living in this country legally.” Angry Al: “Well, I’ll tell you this. If I were a different color, I’d have been approved for Social Security disability benefits a long time ago!” Columnist Tom: “Well, speaking of color, your true colors are now starting to show. You sound like just another angry old white guy who thinks the country is out to get him. What a shame!” Angry Al: “You have no idea how tough it is to be a middle-class white male in our country today. Everything is stacked against us.” Columnist Tom: “I’m a middle-class white male. And I’ve got to say that for all my life, things have been stacked pretty heavily in my favor. But let’s forget about all this political stuff for now and get back to your original Social Security complaint. You were upset because your claim for Social Security disability benefits was denied. I explained to you that the law says you must have worked and paid Social Security taxes in five out of the last 10 years in order to get disability benefits. It sounds like you don’t meet that legal requirement. There are no conspiracies. There are no incompetent government representatives. There is no discrimination against middle-class white males. You just do
not meet that work requirement of the law. It really is as simple as that.” Angry Al: “!@#$ you!” So, dear readers, welcome to my life. I tell you, sometimes it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed in the morning and be a columnist who is trying to help people understand the Social Security program. And let me point out that because of the volume of emails I get from my readers, I usually simply don’t have the time to get into long drawn-out exchanges with readers. But in this case, I
was really hoping I could get Angry Al to understand what was going on with his claim for disability benefits. Foolish me! If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

Will making (legal) improvements pay back at sale time? BY PHILIP A. RAICES Last Saturday April 30th, I had an appointment with a seller to provide them a CMA (comparative market analysis) or what some say today, a value analysis, to determine at what price he should list his home. When I was on the phone with him the night before, asking how many bedrooms and baths and what improvements he had done the last 3-5 years; he began to explain to me what he was planning to fix and upgrade prior to placing his home on the market. I listened carefully as to the repairs and upgrades he was going to do and then I said to him, “wait until I come over tomorrow and we’ll discuss all of your plans and considerations.” When I arrived, we greeted each other and he showed me around his well-landscaped and flowering property with a pool in the rear. We then proceeded to enter his home to show and to convey to me those fixes and upgrades he had in mind. He had all these ideas about upgrading and I began to let him know that he would definitely sell much quicker. However, the money invested in those upgrades wouldn’t necessarily provide him a higher price, make any money above his costs or even reimburse him back what he had spent! I did tell him some basic things he could do, such as, pull up his carpeting, lightly sand the floors as needed and then two coats of polyurethane to bring out a brilliant shine that purchasers would find appreciate and find beneficial as an improvement. Even repainting the interior wasn’t necessary as the walls and ceilings looked fine. The next buyer may not like their choice in color and the next purchases just might repaint the home anyway, so why spend the money, unless your home hasn’t been painted
in at least 10 years and shows it. By the time I finished discussing his potential improvements and repairs, he realized how much money I saved him and his home would sell without all those things he had thought would get him a higher price. Now we went into the basement and the first thing I saw was a full bathroom. I asked if he had a CO (Certificate of Occupancy) and he told me the bathroom was there when the home was constructed. To be sure, I said, go to the building department and ask for your folder under FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) and check to see if there was a CO or a COC (Certificate of Completion) document from the original build. After that I pointed out with a finished (not an unfinished) basement you needed to provide egress out of the basement with a separate door leading out (not the normal staircase leading upstairs) or a pop-out window leading to a gravel or cement constructed pit with a ladder leading up to ground level. This rule (check your local ordinances) was enacted due to safeguarding people who might be in the basement during a fire and enabling them to exit the area safely or in the event of a illegal basement rental, be quite sure that you protect your inhabitants to make it much easier to be able to escape and survive. Unfortunately, he was not aware of this law and my feeling is that the County has not educated the public sufficiently to make homeowners cognizant of this most important situation. We proceeded to go back outside and he was showing me the fences on

The term “hacks,” as used on this site, may be as simple as adding an embellishment; some others may require power tools and lots of ingenuity. the property and his wife pointed out that their property was 10 feet beyond the fence and that their neighbor was aware of it. I told him to get a letter from their neighbor attesting to that fact otherwise adverse possession could come into play as if their neighbors have had that piece of property on their side for at least 10 years the neighbor could claim the property (they did have it for over 35 years when the fence was installed incorrectly where it should have been installed on their property line by the fencing contractor). For your information adverse possession can vary widely between states e.g. its 5 years in California and 30 years in Louisiana. The fence on the other side of the property was also suspect too. I conveyed to them again, to go down to their building dept (or hire an expediter) to search out an handle whatever paperwork needed to be required to make sure everything was legal. No one wants surprises when the buyer’s attorney orders a title search and then your headaches and stress begins with the possibility of having your sale die prior to the closing; as your buyers will not be approved for their mortgage unless those illegal conditions are remedied and paperwork filed with the building department. A word to the wise should be sufficient, so homeowners, make sure all your improvements, extensions and whatever you thought didn’t need a permit, will have one with a CO before you put your home on the market. Seeing Red in the Night Sky BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of May 1-7, 2022 Beginning stargazers are often disappointed when they cannot see the glorious colors that appear in celestial photographs taken by massive telescopes. Experienced sky watchers know that this is because the human eye’s color receptors (the cones) do not respond well under faint light. Anyone who has ever sat in a dimly lit room has experienced this phenomenon. This can be disappointing for novices who peer through a telescope at the wonders of the heavens. Star clusters, nebulae and galaxies appear mostly colorless, despite what some telescope manufacturers imply by printing colorful photos on the telescope packaging. But this doesn’t mean you can’t see colors in the night sky. In fact, if you glance around the sky tonight, I’ll bet you’ll find at least one colorful star. Most likely you will spot Arcturus, a brilliant yellow-orange star midway up in the eastern sky after dark. Arcturus, in the constellation Bootes, is an orange giant star nearing the end of its stellar life. So why, then, can we see the color of Arcturus but not that of most other celestial objects? Because its light is both bright and concentrated into a point rather than being spread out, as
is the case with nebulae and galaxies. Aim binoculars or a small telescope in the direction of Arcturus and you’ll see its color even more prominently; this is because the optics will gather much more light than your eye and will help stimulate your color receptors. Now if you’d like to see an even redder star, you’ll need to cast your gaze high overhead after dark this week. Here lies a star that astronomers know as Y Canum Venaticorum. Normal people just call it La Superba (the magnificent), so named by the mid-19th-century Jesuit astronomer Angelo Secchi. To find La Superba you’ll need to locate the Big Dipper, now standing high overhead, and just above it, the two most prominent stars of Canes Venatici, the hunting dogs. About twothirds of the way between the bend of the Dipper’s handle (Mizar) and the westernmost star of Canes Venatici (Chara), lies a very faint star -- one you may not be able to spot with your eyes alone from near the lights of a city. Don’t worry, though; binoculars or a small telescope aimed in its direction should solve this problem. La Superba is a star with a diameter 342 times that of our sun; if brought to our solar system, it would engulf the sun along with the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. What makes this star unique is that it’s what astronomers call a car-
bon star, one of the few visible to the unaided eye. Yes, it’s a giant star like Arcturus, and is also nearing its death, but, unlike “normal” such aging stars, La Superba has accumulated more carbon compounds in its outer atmosphere. Eventually -- as do all similar stars -- La Superba will eject these outer layers into space in a series of eruptions and will end its life as a tiny
white dwarf star. But for now, it’s red. Very red. And if you aim binoculars or a small telescope in its direction, you’ll be delighted by what you see. Visit Dennis Mammana at dennismammana.com. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

Invasion of the Suburbs Snatchers BY TRACY BECKERMAN Scene: In the dark of night, a tiny object plummets invisibly to the earth. Glowing with the searing heat of the Earth’s atmosphere, it arrives on the planet as a tiny fireball before slamming into the ground in a suburban backyard. Its flames immediately extinguished by the tiny impact, its arrival goes undetected by the slumbering people in the house. No one sees an amorphous form emerge from the object: an almost-imperceptible, orange, gelatinous blob that oozes its way over to the nearest shrub, attaches to a branch and waits. “What the heck is this?” I said to my husband the next morning as I took a break from weeding the front garden. The two of us peered at the small orange blob on the juniper bush. It looked like something the dog would throw up on the rug. I poked at it and quickly withdrew my finger in revulsion at the feel of the
spongy, jelly-like substance. “It’s probably no big deal,” declared my husband. “Bring it to the garden center and see what they say.” I went inside to get scissors to cut off the branch and when I got back, I noticed that there were now two blobs. “I think it’s reproducing,” I said with alarm. He shrugged with disinterest. I guess orange blobs were not high on his list of priorities. When I looked back down at the bush, there were three blobs. “Honey, these blobs are multiplying!” I cried. “I think they’re ALIVE!” “Maybe they’re alien blobs from outer space,” he joked. He turned to one of the blobs. “E.T., go home.” “It’s not funny,” I exclaimed. “It will start with this bush, then it will ingest the other bushes, and then the house and us in it!” I had no doubt in my mind that the orange blob was a very, very bad blob. I knew it was like nothing of
this Earth and it definitely did not come in peace. Careful not to touch the blob again lest it ingest my finger, I cut off a branch with a blob attached and threw it in a plastic container. I wasn’t sure whether to bring it to Area 51 or my local garden center. Ultimately, I chose the garden center because it was closer and I had to be at the dentist at 2, assuming the blob hadn’t swallowed my car by then. Nervously, I carried the container into the garden center and flagged down one of the owners. “This is classified,” I whispered to him. “You cannot tell anyone what you saw, agreed?” He rolled his eyes and nodded. Apparently, I was not the first lunatic customer he’d had to deal with. I peeled back the lid of the container and then jumped back just in case the alien blob tried to ooze out and swallow my arm. The garden center owner peered into
the container. “That is cedar apple rust,” he said with little fanfare. “It’s a fungus.” I blinked. “A fungus?” “Yes.” “From outer space?” I asked. “No, from crab apple trees,” he responded. I blinked again. “It’s not going to swallow my shrubs, eat my house and take over the world?” I wondered. “Nope.” I thought for a minute. “And you’re not afraid of it?” “No,” he said. “But I am a little afraid of you.” Tracy Beckerman is the author of the Amazon Bestseller “Barking at the Moon: A Story of Life, Love, and Kibble,” available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online! Summit Lane students compete in math-themed Amazing Race
Summit Lane teacher Debbie Tommasulo and Director of Mathematics John Towers helped students Shivani Pandey and Azucena Montesinos Mendoza. A group of excited fifth graders arrived at Debra Tommasulo, Angela daSilva, and Erin Connolly’s math class at Summit Lane Elementary School in the Levittown Public School District to engage in “The Amazing Race” on April 8. Students put all the skills and strategies they’ve learned this year to work. At the start of the race, they were divided into two teams, and each was given a math challenge to solve as a group. The answer to each problem led the team to a room number within the building where their next clue could be found. They then completed a series of six problems before being instructed by the last one to return to the math room. Classroom teachers throughout the building played along as they handed out clues when the students arrived at their doors, and some teachers even
created fun puzzles or left notes of encouragement for the students. As the teams traveled from location to location, students worked collaboratively, used alternative strategies when they arrived at an answer that did not make sense, and used multiple entry points and methods in solving word problems. Golden eggs were also hidden throughout the building, which contained tickets for prizes. Throughout the day, all other math students had an opportunity to join the fun. “The Amazing Race” is only one out of 35 activities that the math teachers play with the Summit Lane students during the school year. Mrs. Tommasulo, Mrs. daSilva, and Ms. Connolly noticed that engagement was boosted during the movement-based instruction, strengthening students’ math skills. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.
