“A lot of the kids told me they were happy to see their teachers faces not hidden behind a mask during their instruction. I think having these relaxed restric tions will make for a much richer learning experience for all,” said Grishman. The students were excited to learn that many of the district’s programs and school trips were back on the schedule after having been canceled the past few years.
Denise Nash, director of public information in the district, said that out of the 3,208 students in the dis trict, 97% attended classes on Monday.
In 2021, the first year back fol lowing a hiatus due to the pandem ic, the Syosset Street Fair attracted more than 9,000 people. Chamber representatives say the 2022 Fair Cantiague students are off the buses and ready for a great day.

Nassau County Police arrested a North Carolina man on Wednesday, August 24, for alleged possession of narcotics and weapons.According to police, during an inves tigation at 828 South Oyster Bay Road, which they say is a “known drug prone location,” police approached a parked 2016 Chevrolet Colorado pick-up truck to con duct an investigation. They say they saw Eugene D. Hicks of Charlotte, North Carolina, exit the pick-up truck. They say they saw what appeared to be a knife in his pocket. In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum. “You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish. Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German oppo nents, the Sherman proved to be reli able, relatively fast, and produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changed their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Toddler Sports Program will return on October 18th. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.

Jazz concert at Levittown VFW Town offers Toddler Sports Program
The Toddler Sports Program begins October 18th and is 6 weeks in duration. Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on:• Tuesdays at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville; and • Thursdays at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville.Registration will take place ONLINE through the Parks Portal available at oysterbaytown.com/parks beginning on September 6 at 9 a.m. Space is limit ed- first come, first serve. Registration will close when the program reaches full capacity.Each class is approximately 50 min utes. There are three crosses of Amsterdam symbolizing fire (a lot of fires afflicted the city); water (the city is below sea level) and plague (to show respect for people). In 1925, the Wedding Chamber was painted with a most magnificent Art Deco series of murals that our guide, Donna van der Heul, of guest relations, relates, tell the story of a couple who meets, are seduced in a sneaky way (symbolized by a snake), stay true, meet each other (there is a little flame between their legs), become engaged (the flame becomes bigger), a wedding show ing the happy couple. Another panel shows the couple with a child with a flame of her own, and another panel shows them as an old couple, still together. (We have to rush through the chamber because a wedding is getting underway shortly). We visit the Council Chamber (which looks like parliament). Princess Beatrix and Prince Klaus were married here (the present king’s parents) in 1966 and you can see a photo of their wedding. We visit the beautifully decorated Oriole Garden Bistro where there is a mural that was painted in 1949 when the building was City Hall. Titled, “Inquisitive Children,” by artist Karel Appel, it depicts beg ging, crying children, with sad eyes, in the aftermath of World War II’s human destruction. “The Council Staff thought it would make people feel uncomfortable so they put it

I march myself from the Princesse Royal, the ship that has been my floating hotel for the eightday BoatBikeTours’ Bruges to Amsterdam bike trip the few steps from where we are docked to the free ferry to Amsterdam’s Central Station and into Amsterdam’s his toric city center and on to the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam. The level of service, luxury and elegance in this five-star hotel makes you feel you are staying in a palace, and frankly, it was, as I soon learn on the hotel’s daily tour. I always seek out historic hotels when I travel because they tend to be so much more interesting, so con nected to place, so full of personality, character and yes, authenticity, but rarely have I stayed in a hotel that played such an integral role in a nation’s history. A hotel only since 1992, the orig inal buildings and tower that have been repurposed for The Grand were built in 1411 and actually were two convents – one on the northern side and one on the southern side, with canals on both. In 1578, with the success of William of Orange’s revolt against Catholic Spain, Protestantism swept the Netherlands and Amsterdam. The two convents were given to the city. The northern side was empty for a time, but the southern build ing became the Royal residence –the Princenhof (still the name). The Maria de’ Medici, Queen of France, and William of Orange himself stayed here at some point. In 1652, after a fire at Dam Square destroyed the building where the Council met, they moved into the northern part of the building, which served as the Council Chamber for three years until Dam Square was renovated (the room is still set up as a Council Chamber). In 1655, the powerful Dutch East India Trading Company made this their headquarters. The company, which set up trade, exploration and colonization around the globe, func tioned as a military power, govern ment, and even agricultural pro ducer and helped make this small nation a global power, from 1602 to 1800. (A little research reveals the Dutch had an advantage in resourc es because they were on the cutting edge of capitalism. The Dutch East India Company had a more success ful strategy because of sound money, an efficient tax system and a system of public debt by which the govern ment could borrow from its citizens at low interest rates.

You need to get a handle on your true expenses, starting with absolute essen tials. I can predict some of them for you: shelter, food, insurance, gasoline. Amendment 15 (1870): “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previ ous condition of servitude.”
The Constitution provided for a national government of three inde pendent branches: executive, judicial, and legislature. One of the conflicts that arose at that time concerned the makeup of the legislature. The dispute was resolved by the so-called Great Compromise, establishing the present arrangement whereby the states are equally represented in the Senate while the House of Representatives is repre sented in proportion to their popula tions.The Constitution was signed by 39 delegates (a great trivia question). I recognized only four signatures: Ben Franklin (PA), Alexander Hamilton (NY), James Madison (VA), and George Washington (VA). The ratification pro cess brought on intense debate and con flict. This was resolved when it was agreed to amend the Constitution with the inclusion of a Bill of Rights. A total of 42 amendments were proposed but were subsequently reduced to 12. Two (2) failed ratification and the remaining became the first 10 amendments, today referred to as the aforementioned Bill of Rights. Unquestionably, these were major and significant additions to pre vent government abridgement and to insure the fundamental rights of indi viduals.Here is what I would consider some of the key amendments. The above quote is the preamble to the Constitution of the United States. Every American, particularly those who vote, should read it (at least once). It is the basic instrument of our govern ment and the law of the land. In terms of history, the Constitution was drafted by/at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and ratified by 2/3 of the states (as provided in the Constitution and became effective in 1789).

Unfortunately, most officials and some of the Justices have chosen to ignore the intent and instead reinterpret many of the laws of the land. The framers obvi ously were concerned that an expand ed government would encroach upon the rights of individuals. An objective review of the Constitution clearly indi cates their concern that government expansion would adversely affect the rights of individuals. How lucky we are to be Americans. A: Don’t worry. As I said in the be ginning of this column, this family max imum stuff doesn’t affect a husband and wife getting benefits. You’ll note the rule book section your accountant sent you refers to a “PIA.” That stands for “prima ry insurance amount,” which is essen tially your full retirement age amount. That amount can never be more than a 100% rate. You are going to get a high er monthly benefit amount (up to 32% more) because you are delaying filing for Social Security until age 70. But your PIA remains at that 100% rate. Your wife is going to get a 50% rate. So, the most a husband and dependent wife can get in basic (PIA) combined ben efits is 150%. (His 100% PIA rate and her 50% spousal rate.) And that 150% rate does not exceed the lowest family max rate (which is 150%), so a husband and wife can never be subject to the family maximum.
Q: I am taking my benefits at full retirement age. I am married to a woman who hasn’t worked very much, so she is going to be getting half of my Social Security. But I also have an ex-wife who hasn’t remar ried and didn’t work very much ei ther, so she will be getting half of my Social Security, too. So, I’m going to get 100%, my wife will get 50% and my ex will also get 50%. That’s 200% combined and that exceeds what I’ve been told is the 150% maximum that can be paid to my family. So how do they make these adjustments to get down to the 150% rate?
The family maximum formula for Old-Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI) benefits is based on a benefi ciary’s primary insurance amount (PIA). The PIA is a beneficiary’s basic Social Security benefit amount before adjustments for retirement age, earn ings, and other factors. SSA calculates the family maximum using a formula. Ultimately, that formula yields a max imum for each family that is between 150% and 188% of the worker’s basic Social Security benefit, or PIA.” So according to my accountant and this rulebook entry, if our fami ly maximum ends up being less than 182%, they are somehow going to cut our benefits. So now I’m really wor ried. Why bother waiting until 70 to get increased benefits if they are just going to reduce our checks because of this family maximum business?”
Q: My wife and I both plan to take our benefits at age 70 at the end of the year. I am estimated to get $3,444 per month and my wife will get $3,100. But there are two things we’ve heard about Social Security that scare us. We’ve been told there is some kind of maximum that applies to what we will be able to receive, and we’ve also been told there is a marriage penalty with Social Security that limits what my wife can get to one-half of my benefit rate. A: No adjustments will be needed. Any benefits paid to an ex-wife are just “add-on” benefits. They don’t affect the benefits you and your current wife are due, and they also don’t affect this family maximum business.

A: As I’ve explained in this column, the family maximum rules do not ap ply to married couples. And there is no “marriage penalty” associated with So cial Security. You mentioned a wife be ing limited to half of her husband’s Social Security. That would be a wife who does not have her own Social Security benefit, or who has a very small benefit on her own record and is therefore eligible to receive a dependent wife’s benefit from her husband’s account. Those spousal benefits are limited to the 50% rate, but you and your wife are each getting your own retirement benefit: $3,444 for you and $3,100 for your wife. So combined, you will get $6,544 in monthly Social Se curity benefits.
CORRECTION TO MY BOOK: Before I finish out this discussion of family maximum confusion, I’ve got to correct an error I discovered about this topic in my little Social Security guide book called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” In the “Benefits for Children” chapter of that book, when discussing the family maximum, I gave an example where a retiree took reduced benefits at 62 so that his teenage daughters could claim benefits on his record. And I said that it was his reduced benefit that gets figured into the family maximum com putation. But actually, it is his full ben efit rate that is used, even though he’s getting a reduced amount. But still, the message of this column remains the same. When we are talking about just a husband and wife getting benefits, the family maximum never comes into play. Q: I am waiting until age 70 to take my Social Security so that I will get 132% of my Social Security benefit. Then my wife, who was a homemak er all her life, will file on my record and she will get 50% of my benefit. So combined, we will get 182% of my Social Security benefit. So, here is the message of this col umn: The family maximum rules do not apply to a husband and wife getting So cial Security benefits all by themselves. These maximum rules only come into play when children are involved. That usually means cases involving children getting benefits on a deceased parent’s account. Or it can mean limiting benefits to families of someone getting Social Se curity disability benefits. But it also can occasionally apply to retirees who still have minor children at home. When this does happen, it’s frequently because a retiree has an adult child who has been disabled since birth. But again, the focus of today’s column is the scenario of a husband and wife with no minor or disabled adult children at home. And to repeat, the family maximum rules do not apply to them. Here are ques tions from readers about this issue.

According to CoreLogic, a data analytics service company prices increased in June by 18.3% year over year, which had the 125th consecutive month of year-overyear increases. However, it was less than the previous 2 months due to higher interest rates, causing slowing demand and concerns over the econo my and most likely families and indi viduals’ worries over their own per sonal finances.

Fortune found through research and data firm CoreLogic, that 68% of Metropolitan markets especially our local markets in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties are overval ued. However, 24.4% are normal and 7.6% are undervalued. However, they predict prices will continue to increase over the next year except in the follow ing cities according to Realtor.Com ana lyzing its 200 major Metropolitan areas in June, that had the highest percent age of listings with price reductions: Reno, Nevada, Austin, Texas, Phoenix, Arizona and Anchorage, Alaska, Boise, ID, Ogden, Ut, Sacramento, Ca, Colorado Springs, Co, Evansville, IN, and Medford, Or. In Boise, Idaho, home prices increased 53% from Dec. 19-Dec. 21 to $485,000 according to Redfin’s analysis of mortgage data. Prices rose 48% in Austin, Texas, and Cape Coral, Florida. Considerably lower pric es will occur in those markets where homes are over-valued. However, as incomes rose, and rates increased the sleepy towns that became extremely hot during the Pandemic and are now being affected by much higher interest rates and unsustainable price growth causing a slowing demand. If you are looking to purchase in any of those states, waiting might be your smartest and most advantageous strategy.

In another study, the towns that had been most affected and slowed the quickest, as per Redfin, were similar, such as Boise, Austin, Cape Coral, Phoenix, North Port, Florida, and Tacoma, Washington. However, if a more severe recession were to occur (we are in a slight recession currently based on the first 2 quarters of 2022 of negative GDP), then Boise, Idaho, Cape Coral, North Port, west Palm Beach, Miami, Stockton, California, and Salt Lake City are among the 25 housing mar kets that are more susceptible to price reductions. However, due to the higher incomes of individuals and families in those areas, prices probably wouldn’t crash but will see slight reductions. If inventory were to become as high as it was in 2008, then we could see market crashes similar to back then. Legislators in Washington must have received sufficient and cru cial information from a multitude of experts and analytical service compa nies. I think that they were careful not to further affect the real estate mar ket with their new regulations. The profound effect that the doubling of interest rates had on curbing our seri ous inflation issues was sufficient to really change the profile of our crazy and insane real estate market. This had to be done, as increased legislation negatively affecting real estate would have created an even greater, more tenuous, and negative environment for buyers and sellers. Although real estate has been an instrumental factor in causing our inflation, I believe it has had more positive effects in increasing one’s wealth than negative ones. When one buys a home they then begin to purchase goods and services which is a plus for our economy as 70% of it com prises consumer spending. According to CNBC research, 42% of homeowner’s equity wealth has increased by the end of 2021. The profit on a typical home sale in 2021 was a little more than $94,000 an increase of 45% from 2020 and 71% higher profits from the period prior to the Pandemic. Usable equity in one’s home grew by 2.6 trillion in 2021 to a monumental total of 9.9 tril lion. However, an excessive amount of money was freely given out during the Pandemic, sometimes to the wrong individuals and companies, causing greater inflation (higher stock prices) and supply chain shortages from the lack of employees across the supply chain, shortage of raw materials and bottlenecks, cyber-attacks and also weather-related events too. We should hope for a soft landing, but there are so many variables in the mix it’s anyone’s guess how it will all end up.

The Inflation Reduction Act (H.R. 5376), introduced by Senators Chuck Schumer, (D-NY) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) was passed by both houses of Congress and signed by President Biden on August 16. It became a com promise for the much larger Build Back Better plan, which was introduced to assist in fighting inflation, increased climate/global warming, and certain medical cost issues. One of the key issues was having all corporations pay a minimum of 15% income tax. This is good news for homeowners who might have previously been concerned about additional income taxes or possibly the loss or change in our interest deduction on primary and secondary home mort gages (within certain limitations, ask your CPA), (reduced from $1,000,000 to $750,000 through 2025 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017) which has been the most popular deduction. It should also have very little or no effect on REITs or small-scale devel opers. Other benefits are clean energy credits from your utilities and further massive tax rebates on the installation of solar and renewable energy, commu nity solar, and wind farms. This will also enhance homeownership and real estate investment going forward while reducing energy costs which dramati cally increased in 2022. However, there is a huge problem that the legislation hasn’t addressed, the historically low housing supply affecting American families. Higher interest rates cause higher costs reduc ing the incentive for building multifam ily units, also placing more restrictive and higher energy code requirements and inflated labor costs have slowed things down. Currently, when the U.S needs more housing, and with the higher financing costs, the market has cooled off substantially in many states, and developers and builders are being much more careful as has been docu mented by fewer building permits lead ing to a reduction in new construction. This is something that should absolute ly be addressed immediately in order to keep us out of a more severe and debilitating recession to accommodate those qualified buyers who need and want to Accordingown.
In conclusion, quite possibly the most valuable aspect of your education was that part about learning to live on next to nothing, figuring out how to scrape by. I am often asked if it’s possible to lose weight and eat well at the same time. My answer: Of course it is! It may take a few alterations and a willingness to try some new things, but it’s certainly doable. Here’s a recipe for blueberry muffins from “The Mayo Clinic Diet” that allows you to have a guilt-free muf fin. Pair it with some scrambled eggs or a carton of yogurt in the morning or with a salad at lunch.

Constipation is one of those sub jects we usually only discuss with close friends. But if you suffer from it, you’re not alone. Some 63 million Americans experience the inability to empty their bowels regularly. Having three or fewer bowel movements a week is an indicator of constipation. Left unresolved, it can lead to discomfort and pain, as well as the development of hemorrhoids. While there may be many causes of constipation (like stress and medica tions), diet can play a huge role. Higherfiber foods help a lot. Here are several higher-fiber foods to try. No. 1: Whole-wheat or rye bread. A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people experiencing consti pation who consumed rye bread daily had improvements in bowel movement frequency compared with those who ate white bread. Simply put, added fiber helps form your stools, adding weight to help move stools through your system. No. 2: Dried plums (prunes). A study in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition discovered that healthy adults with reported infrequent stool habits and low amounts of dietary fiber experienced increased stool weight and frequency by consuming about eight dried plums daily.No. 3: Sauerkraut and yogurt. Having more good bacteria in our digestive systems through fermented foods and yogurt can help promote regular bowel movements. A study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that consuming rye bread with yogurt helped relieve gastrointestinal complaints. No. 4: Chia and flaxseeds. These tiny seeds are good sources of soluble fiber. Soluble fiber increases stool water con tent resulting in bulky, soft and easyto-pass stools. You can sprinkle flax or chia on cereal or oatmeal, add to yogurt or a smoothie or top a muffin with them. No. 5: Water. When we are dehydrat ed, our large intestine cannot provide enough water to properly form stools, which leads to hard stools and consti pation. It’s important to drink plenty of water when adding fiber to our diets. Foods like watermelon and cantaloupe, soup and vegetables also help with hydration.Thebottom line is constipation isn’t something you have to live with. Add fruits, vegetables, seeds, whole grains, fermented foods, yogurt and water to make a difference.

Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat muffin tin with cooking spray (or use liners). Combine the flours, seeds, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a bowl; set aside. Using a mixer, combine unsalted butter and sugar until creamy. Add the vanilla and egg. Add the dry mixture alternately with the yogurt. Mix until combined. Fold in blueberries. The entrance fee for the tour nament is $40 for Town of Oyster Bay residents and $60 for non-residents. All those who register before September 13th will receive a tournament t-shirt.
