Syosset native brings infectious disease center to her hometown BY RIKKI N. MASSAND On Monday, September 17 Dr. Uzma Syed introduced her and her partners’ new practice at 60 Queens Street in Syosset, South Shore Infectious Diseases Antibiotic Infusion Medical Suite (A.I.M.S.) to residents and businesses in her hometown. The latest Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce ribbon-cutting ceremony drew several prominent Nassau County religious leaders of different faiths; County Legislator and Syosset native son Josh Lafazan; State Assemblyman Chuck Lavine and local Jericho and Syosset residents. On behalf of Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker, his assistant Crystal Berger attended the ribbon-cutting at SSID in Syosset and participated in the ceremonies. With a ribbon cutting and opening reception just six days ahead of the Syosset Street Fair, held Sunday September 23 around the corner from Syed’s new office, the longtime resident welcomed her fellow community members and friends from different walks of life -- fellow physicians and medical staff; the Chamber’s membership of entrepreneurs and professionals; board of education trustees, students and recent graduates from the Syosset Central School District and residents of the community she has lived in for decades. Most importantly her dear mom was on hand to see her daughter open a business in

Town vows to reinstate parking restrictions near LIRR station BY GARY SIMEONE The parking situation near the Syosset LIRR station has been an ongoing problem for local residents and commuters alike. Commuters had complained about the limited parking availability near the station, and local residents were unhappy with train riders parking their vehicles on residential streets. After some debate with residents earlier this year about the problem , Town of Oyster Bay officials have decided to reinstate the no-parking signs. Town Deputy Highway Commissioner John Bishop said that parking restric-

tions will vary across the area near the station, and that the on-street signage would reflect the restrictions. “We’re going back to square one,” said Bishop at a Town Hall meeting last Tuesday. “The signs that have been taken down over the last nine months that had lifted restrictions will be put back in place over the next few weeks.” He said that the signs will once again restrict parking on residential streets near the station during the hours of 5:30AM and 9:30AM. “Commuter parking restrictions will revert to how they were previous to the changes,” said Bishop. “Commuters will

be able to park in the lot at the LIRR station, as well as where it’s permissible on residential streets.” Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia said she had spoken with commuters who were frustrated with the lack of parking availability in and around the station. “I had spoken with a group of working mothers from Syosset about a year ago who said they had to leave their homes very early in the morning to find parking spaces,” said Alesia. “They weren’t able to spend time with their children and they were upset about that.” She said the Town tried to work in their favor by loosening restrictions,

but that “produced a tidal wave of complaints from residents in the area.” A Town spokesperson who did not want to be named, said that it is the responsibility of the MTA to address the shortage of LIRR parking in communities like Syosset. “Residents are frustrated with the lack of available parking offered by the MTA,” said the spokesperson. “The MTA must fulfill its pledge to construct an additional 1,200 spots in Hicksville and must continue to build additional parking structures in other communities throughout the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Jackson's Library transformed into Book Bistro

Mrs. Spina helps her students select a book during the appetizer course.

Librarian Joan Kearon leads the students to their table. Jackson students were surprised and excited to see that their school library was transformed into a Book Bistro. The library was set up like a café where students had an opportunity to taste books in different genres. “The hope is that the students will

expand their palate for reading, and try books in genres they haven’t read before,” said Jackson Librarian Joan Kearon. The books were broken up into groups - School Stories, Family and Friends, Informational Texts and

Taking notes on the “dish” to see if they like that selection. Biographies, Adventure, Fantasy, and Realistic Fiction. Students moved from table to table to explore these books and write reviews so they could

make a wish list for themselves. The students had a great time!

Beyond Bingo: The Third Act of Our Lives BY MARJORIE GOTTLIEB WOLFE This season there’s a new TV program titled, “The Cool Kids.” It stars Leslie Jordan, Vicki Lawrence, David Alan Grier and Martin Mull. If you’ve enjoyed seeing the movies, “Cacoon,” “The Gin Game” and “The Best Exotic Magnolia Hotel,” this program will certainly make you laugh. No doubt you’ve heard these retirement jokes: • A retired husband is often a wife’s full-time job. • You’re probably retired if you and your teeth don’t sleep together. • “Getting lucky” means you remember where you left your white Sonata at the Festival Flea Market Mall in Florida. • You step off the curb and look down one more time to make sure the street is still there. • The funny senior texting code “LOL” doesn’t mean “laughing out loud,” it means “Living On Lipitor.” • I’m very good at opening childproof caps—with a hammer. • I’m the life of the party—even if it lasts until 8 p.m. “The Cool Kids” is a comedy about a

group of friends living in a retirement community named Shady Meadows. That’s a much more pleasant name than “Aged Oaks,” “Rusty Years,” “Out With a Bang,” “Last Sunset Heights,” “Altacocker Acres” or “Ferklempt Estates.” (Thanks, Roz Warren!) And, there’s actually a development in So. Florida named, “Journey’s End.” What was the developer thinking? A synopsis: The above-mentioned residents are willing to break every rule to have a good time. Hank is a gruff, opinionated 21st Century Archie Bunker. Charlie is a bumbling storyteller. He sometimes goes off on tangents about barely believable episodes from his life. Perhaps we’ll see a 2004 episode based on a Metropolitan Diary story by Tony & Sara Soll. n

Dear Diary: Sunday morning, Brooklyn Heights: Sara was in line at a bagel store on Montague Street. Ahead of her was a tall, well-dressed woman with a strong Midwestern accent. She was ordering her breakfast bagel and clearly didn’t want much cream cheese on it. The Hispanic man behind the counter looked puzzled as the customer’s

nasal twang requested, “A sesame bagel with just a teensy, teensy, weeeeensy bit of low fat cream cheese, please.” After saying several times in a strong Latino accent, “I don’t understand,” the counterman looked even more perplexed. The woman mimed the universal finger and thumb sign for just a little bit as she repeated slowly and patiently, “A little, teensy bit of cream cheese.” Suddenly, the man’s face lit up. “Ah!” he said. “You want a schmeer!” n

Or, perhaps Charlie will share this story: Stephanie, an elderly woman, was telling her daughter, Joyce, about a date with a 90-year-old man. “Believe it or not, I had to slap his face three times,” complained Stephanie with a smile. “Do you mean that old man got fresh with you?” Joyce asked with disgust showing all over her face. “Oh, no dear,”explained Stephanie. “I had to keep slapping his face to keep him awake.” n

Sid, another resident, is a pill-popping hypochrondiac.

When he gets ill, will he attempt to get an appointment with the surgeon to the stars, Dr. Oz? Does he define “STD” as “Standing Till Dazed”—a Frank Cerabino word describing a condition that Disney patrons feel from spending too much time waiting in lines? And, will he quote Archie Bunker: “I’m suffering a little bit from smoke EXHILARATION.” “In her elastic stockings, next to her VERY CLOSE veins”? “Shut the door well…we’re catchin’ AMMONIA.” “Sit there like you’re in a COMMA.” “I’m half PROSTATE in the heat.” “My DIGITALIS clock is broken.” “Tell ‘em we’re all DECREASED— we went last night in a suicide pact.” And Margaret, a confident woman, forces her way into the group. Will we hear her use some old-time words like “Belly-aching,” “pill” (a person you can’t take), “Heavens to Betsy” and “fiddle-faddle?” Will she ask her accountant, “Debits still go on the left, right”? Will she complain that her mini-size stainless-steel refrigerator See page D6

Widows Have Questions About Social Security BY TOM MARGENAU

Q: I was getting my own Social Security. Then my husband died and they started paying me his Social Security and took away my own. But why did they do that? Aren’t they two separate benefits and I deserve both? A: The law says if you are due two different Social Security benefits, you don’t get them both. You only get the one that pays the higher rate. And if you think about it, the law makes sense. Without it, everyone in the country who is married or who has ever been married would get two full benefits -- their own and something from their spouse. So I would get my own Social Security check and I also would get a husband’s benefit on my wife’s account. And then she would get her own benefit and a wife’s benefit on my account. And then Warren Buffet would get his own retirement check and a husband’s benefit on his wife’s account. And Warren’s wife would get ... I think you see where I’m going with this. If the law allowed everyone to get every benefit he or she is due, the Social Security system would have gone belly up a long time ago. And if it makes you feel any better, you are getting benefits from two accounts. That’s because the rules say if you are due anything on your own record, you will be paid that first, and then get any extra benefits you might be due from your spouse. For example, let’s say your husband’s benefit was $2,000 per month and your own monthly retirement check was $1,600. When your husband died, you kept getting your own $1,600 and then you started getting an additional $400 from your husband’s account to take you up to his $2,000 rate. I know you just get one check for $2,000 per month and you understandably assume you are only getting a widow’s benefit. But again, on Social Security’s books, you are being paid on off of two records. Q: I am my husband’s second wife. He died about a year ago. I just turned 60 and started getting widow’s benefits. His first wife is also getting widow’s benefits on his record. When she dies, will my rate go up? A: No it won’t. Any Social Security money paid to an ex-wife is just add-on benefit. It takes nothing away from anything you are due on your husband’s account. So if she dies before you do, nothing will change. Q: My husband died about six months ago. He was 78. I am 74. I was a stay-at-home mom throughout our marriage. So I don’t have my own Social Security. I was getting a spousal benefit on his record before he died. And after his death, I started getting widow’s benefits. I have read in some of your past columns that when a husband dies, the widow gets what her husband got at the time of death. But I started getting a little

more. He got $1,368 when he died. And I am now getting $1,505. Should I be worried that they are paying me too much money and will someday ask for it back? A: Don’t worry. I’m sure you are being paid correctly. And I think I know why you are getting a higher rate than your husband was getting before he died. You were right when you quoted me as saying that a woman over age 66 starts getting a widow’s benefit that equals what her husband was getting at the time of death. But I should have added a qualifier: I should have said she gets that “as a general rule.” And you are an exception to that rule. Here is why. Even though you didn’t say, I bet your husband started taking his Social Security at age 62. That meant he was getting an amount equal to 75 percent of his full retirement benefit. And that would normally be your widow’s rate. But there is a rule that says a widow over age 62 is guaranteed to get at least 82.5 percent of her husband’s full benefit. So that’s why you are getting a little more than your husband. Q: My husband died about 25 years ago. At the time, I was in my 40s with two small children. They got monthly survivors benefits and for a while, I was getting a check, too. Those benefits stopped many years ago. Now I am about to turn 66. I’m still working and plan to keep working as long as I can. I never remarried. A friend at work told me that because I got widow’s benefits all those years ago, that I have used up any money I am due on his record and can only rely on my Social Security. Is this true? A: Nope. Your friend is wrong. You can never “use up” money from any Social Security account. In fact, you should get ready to employ the widow’s maximizing option. Here’s how that works. When you turn 66, you should apply for widow’s benefits. You will get 100 percent of your husband’s current Social Security rate. In other words, it will be updated for inflation so you won’t be getting the smaller benefit you were getting a quarter-century ago. Even though you are working, because you will be over age 66, you are due full widow’s benefits with no reduction because of your earnings. Then when you turn 70, you should switch to your own retirement benefits. At that age, you will get 132 percent of your full retirement rate. Q: I’m 80 years old. How come when my husband died last year all I got was the little $255 burial check while all my other widow friends are getting monthly benefits from their dead husband’s account? A: You didn’t give me enough information to fully answer your question. But I’m guessing that you are getting your own Social Security retirement benefit and that it exceeds what you are

due as a widow. I can’t imagine that of all your friends, you are the only one who worked and earned her own Social Security check. I will bet that more than a few of those friends of yours are also getting their own Social Security retirement

check and are not being paid the widow’s benefits they claim to be getting. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has the answer. Contact him at thomas.margenau@comcast.net. COPYRIGHT 2018 CREATORS.COM

Halloween Happenings, Oktoberfest Take Center Stage in Fall Festivals C ontinued from page D5 Activities include three different supernatural settings including an intuitive development class with Spirit Flow’s Amanda Jackiewicz at 5 p.m., which will teach participants how to strengthen their intuition and heighten their awareness and conscientiousness. Following the workshop, Jackiewicz will conduct a limited amount of individual medium sessions from 6-7:30 p.m. During these sessions, guests will work one-on-one with Jackiewicz to communicate with loved ones in the afterlife. For the final portion of the supernatural event, attendees will participate in a ghost hunt with the R.E.A.P. Investigation team led by Bill Reap beginning at 8 p.m. R.E.A.P. Investigations will hunt for ghostly activities throughout four areas of the hotel, including the Calvert Ballroom

and the 19th floor, which are said to have heightened supernatural activities. At 10 p.m., the Lord Baltimore Hotel will join a live feed with more than 100 other locations as each conduct a ghost hunt at the same time. Perhaps participants will get a glimpse of Lord Baltimore’s resident ghost: a little girl, wearing a long, cream-colored dress and black, shiny shoes, running by the open doorway, bouncing a red ball before her. There have been many times when guests have asked, “Little girl, are you lost?” and the hallway has been completely empty. Event proceeds will be donated to Back on my Feet, an organization that helps to combat homelessness through the power of running and community support. Tickets ($20-50 pp) can be purchased through Eventbrite at: https://www.

Lord Baltimore Hotel is also offering a discounted guest room rate for National Ghost Hunt Day participants. Reservations can be made online through https:// reservations.travelclick. com/85390?groupID=2360767#/ guestsandrooms. Held on the last Saturday of each September, National Ghost Hunt Day serves to enthusiastically commence the start of each new Halloween season. Its noble intention is to globally observe the most haunted properties in the world while recognizing the novice, curious, experts and professionals that investigate paranormal activity in these iconic locations! For more information, visit http://nationalghosthuntingday. com. The Lord Baltimore Hotel is in the heart of downtown Baltimore, within walking distance of many local attractions. Originally built in 1928, the hotel was purchased in 2013 and completely renovated by Rubell Hotels. A member of Historic Hotels of America (historichotels.org), the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Lord Baltimore is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (20 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore, MD, 21201 www. lordbaltimorehotel.com). But what may be the most haunted of Historic Hotels of America members is 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, in Eureka Springs Arkansas: “Guests who check out but never leave” at the 1886 Crescent Hotel and Spa include Michael, the Irish stonemason who helped build the hotel in 1885; Theodora, a patient of Baker’s Cancer Curing Hospital in the late 1930s; and “the lady in the Victorian nightgown”, who likes to stand at the foot of the bed in Room 3500 and stare at guests while they sleep. These are

only three of the dozens upon dozens of spirits that guests and visitors have reported encountering in this historic hotel in the Ozark Mountains. This mountaintop spa resort, which has also become known as “America’s Most Haunted Hotel” and has been featured on popular shows like Ghost Hunter’s and Bio Channel’s My Ghost Story offers nightly tours that gain exclusive access to some of the most famous ghost sighting locations (recommended for 8 years and up; families with younger children should join the earliest tour.) And on October, 31, you can join a Halloween Séance. For more haunted historic hotels, visit historichotels.org. Also in Eureka Springs, the 1905 Basin Park Hotel, which features a mysterious underground cave, offers a 90-minute Spirits of the Basin “ghost adventour” that combines a ghost tour with the adventure of paranormal investigation. It starts with a guided ghost hunt (in period costume) of the most haunted spaces and ends with a chilling ghost story told by candlelight and a sample of the bootleg liquor (http://www.spiritsofthebasin. com/) Oktoberfest Weekend Celebrations Return to Hunter Mountain Temperatures in the northeast have begun to trend cooler, and as the leaves begin to change, Hunter Mountain is hosting its long tradition of Oktoberfest celebrations. Voted among the top 10 Best Oktoberfests in the Nation by USA Today, Hunter Mountain’s Oktoberfest weekends celebrate the arrival of autumn with authentic traditional German-American festivities, food and culture with a variety of entertainment options during all four free weekends. Oktoberfest weekends also occur in conjunction with specialty events alongside plentiful food and craft

beverages, live music, artistic vendors, lawn games, our Scenic Skyride and much more. The Colors in the Catskills: OffRoad Edition is a new arrival for our second weekend of Oktoberfest (Sept. 29 & 30) and allows guests to explore Hunter Mountain’s vast trail network in the midst of fall foliage season. Lead by knowledgeable and experienced guides from Northeast Off-Road Adventures, guests can register their 4X4 vehicles to participate in off-road tours of Hunter Mountain. Additionally, drivers and passengers alike will be able to purchase exclusive camping packages that grant them access to camping right on the Mountain. The Das Laufwerk Eurocar Rally and 18-time Grammy award winner Jimmy Sturr return to Hunter Mountain for the third weekend of Oktoberfest (Oct. 6 & 7) to rock the stage and showcase some of best European cars our guests have to offer. The Das Laufwerk Eurocar Rally is open to guests and completely free to attend! All European car models are welcome and will have access to exclusive parking in a reserved lot located close to the Hunter Mountain base lodge. Guests

attending this weekend of Oktoberfest will have a chance to see the finest in German engineering including Audis, Volkswagens, Porsches and much more The final weekend of Oktoberfest (Oct. 13 and 14) will celebrate wineries from around New York State with our Wine Tasting on the Mountain event. This year’s wine tasting event will host wineries from Long Island to the Finger Lakes. Similarly to our Ciders in the Catskills event, guests will be able to purchase VIP tasting packages which provide them with a voucher for 20 wine tastings, a commemorative wine glass and t-shirt as well as admission for one to our Scenic Skyride. Admission to Oktoberfest is free and gates open each weekend at 11 am – 6:15 pm Saturdays and from 11 am– 5:15 pm Sundays. All four Oktoberfest weekends are held indoors and outdoors, rain or shine. Located in the heart of the Great Northern Catskills, Hunter Mountain is a four-season resort. Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Hunter Mountain offers a variety of outdoor activities, weddings, group retreats, festivals and concerts while surrounded

by magnificent views of the Catskill Mountains. The 3,200’ summit of Hunter Mountain provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and is accessible from May – October via the Scenic Skyride. An easy 2 ½ hour ride North of New York City, Hunter Mountain can be a day trip or overnight getaway for sightseeing, relaxation, hiking, fly fishing, zip lining and much more. Hunter Mountain abuts the Catskills Preserve with spectacular hiking. Follow the Hudson River School Art Trail (my favorite trails are in the North-South Campground and Kaaterskill Falls). Syosset native brings infectious disease center to her hometown From page 1 Syosset. In 1989 Syed’s parents relocated from Europe to Syosset. Uzma Syed was born in Amsterdam and moved here as a child. Before coming to the U.S. and firmly planting roots on Long Island, the Syed family traveled frequently between England and Holland as Dr. Syed’s father earned his master’s degree in England. Over the course of the next three decades, Syed’s mother became a fixture at the Astoria Savings Bank on Jackson Avenue, and Uzma has called her mom “the unofficial mayor of Syosset.” With the family raised here and still here, Dr. Syed attended Village Elementary School, South Woods Middle School and Syosset High School, graduating in 1997. She is now the parent of two children, a son and a daughter, attending in the district. As a candidate for the Syosset Board of Education in both early 2017 and 2018, Dr. Syed credits her experience in the community and its school system with inspiring her to pursue a career as a physician and help people every day, with initial ambition of becoming a neurosurgeon. Once she graduated from Syosset High, Syed set out to become a doctor and went on the earn her degree in medicine in Maine, from the University of New England. Dr. Syed is dual board-certified in infectious disease (as an ID specialist) and in internal medicine. She completed both her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at Winthrop University Hospital. Legislator Josh Lafazan graduated from Syosset High School in 2012, and like Dr. Syed he understands the quality of both the community and school district and living and working in Syosset. At the ribbon-cutting, he acknowledged the great professional homecoming story for his good friend Uzma Syed and presented a citation from the Nassau County Legislature: “Whether it is a school district program or event, from serving lunch to raising money for charity, Dr. Syed is a staple of Syosset and Woodbury and my only ask of this practice is your team here at SSID A.I.M.S. keeps up the level of expecta-

tion that we have for you -- no matter what crisis comes our way, you will be there for us as a community and you will continue to keep us together. On behalf of the 1.3 million Nassau County residents I am so proud to present you with this citation and I wish the team here nothing but success and prosperity,” Lafazan announced. Dr. Syed also celebrated the occasion with praise for the Syosset Woodbury community and business circles: “Thank you all for being here and joining us today. We are so honored to have you all here on this great day and occasion. I am a lifelong resident of Syosset and this project is especially near and dear to my heart, and it has really been a dream of mine to come back into the community that I grew up in as Syosset has given me and my family so much. I want us to continue giving back to the community and providing the best care that we can in our area,” she said.

School Board attendees

Among the 100 attendees of the event were Syosset School Board Trustee Rob Gershon and Trustee Andrew Feldman, Syed’s former running mate in the spring 2018 Board of Education election race,, as well as Laura Schultz of RESIDENTS for a More Beautiful Syosset. Feldman and Gershon made the effort to support the new treatment center and business coming to Syosset with the ribbon-cutting held just 30 minutes before the two gentlemen had to head to a school board executive session ahead of the regular meeting on Monday, September 17. Feldman was re-elected to the school board in May, and he has attended several of the Syosset Woodbury Chamber of Commerce meetings and welcoming receptions, offering support for residents and Chamber members alike. A 19-year resident of Syosset/ Woodbury, he is a longtime Chamber of Commerce member, certified financial planner and president of Andrew Feldman Associates, Inc. with his office at 185 Froehlich Farm Boulevard in Woodbury. Woods P.C., told the crowd of 100 people on September 17 the gathering was an exclamation point to the tremendous number of grand opening ceremonies, meetings and networking nights the Syosset Woodbury Chamber has hosted since the summer began. She thanked Alan Goldberg of Well Sys NY and Cardworks, the chair of the Chamber’s Membership and Networking committees. “We are here today celebrating the South Shore Infectious Diseases Center and I have been working with Dr. Syed for the past two years as she has attended many Chamber events and participated in our discussions. She is so active and involved here in Syosset and it warms my heart to see another business open in the community. Our area and the Chamber of Commerce is flourishing and growing wildly and this practice coming here is so exciting!” Ezdrin said. She thanked Assemblyman Levine, Legislator Lafazan and Crystal Berger for representing Legislator Drucker at the event. Dr. Adriane J. Collins is the founding physician of South Shore Infectious Disease Center at 40 East Main Street in Bay Shore. She spoke with the Advance and News Journal at the grand opening and explained the genesis of branching out into Syosset. “We have a big presence on the south shore, opening in Bay Shore in 1995. We are very involved with St. Joseph Hospital and Dr. Syed is really involved here in Syosset with the schools and business community. Here SSID has found a great central location in the heart of Syosset and we will open in the coming weeks. We are set to provide full service from handling travel medicines and vaccinations, to infusions which are very, very important as hospitals try to move patients out when they don’t have many other places to go. SSID is designed to offer concierge service when someone can come in for an infusion, we are here seven days a week with a nurse to take care of you one-on-one. We will also offer hydration as the sick, elderly and chemotherapy patients but also younger people who work From page 21

Acts of Charity on Yom Kippur

Some superheroes make blankets. North Shore Synagogue congregants and families worked together to make comfortable blankets to donate to local children’s shelters, fulfilling the mitzvah of tzedakah, or charity.

This “Just Be Yourself” blanket will keep someone cozy. Some of the Synagogue ladies working on blankets. Yom Kippur is a day of prayer, self-reflection and fasting that begins with each person asking forgiveness from others that they have wronged and forgiving those who have wronged us. The focus then changes to asking forgiveness from God. Jewish adults are commanded to fast for the day, enabling us to put aside our physical desires to concentrate on our spiritual needs through prayer, repentance and charity. Each year, congregants engage in meaningful and moving prayer at North Shore Synagogue’s worship services. The liturgy and readings

guide worshippers through a process of self-reflection and repentance. To fulfill the commandment (mitzvah) of charity (tzedakah), many fill a grocery bag with non-perishable food for donation to local food pantries as part of our annual food drive. Many worshippers choose to spend additional time at the synagogue to avoid the distractions of home and focus on self-reflection. In addition to offering an opportunity for group Torah study on Yom Kippur day, this year the synagogue offered an additional opportunity for a hands-on social action activity between morning

and afternoon services. Participants created no-sew blankets that will be donated to local children’s shelters including MercyFirst in Syosset. Families and new and old friends worked together to create the colorful blankets. It was rewarding activity that created something sure to bright-

en a child’s day. North Shore Synagogue is a Reform Jewish Congregation and member of the Union for Reform Judaism. For more information, go to www.northshoresynagogue.org and facebook. com/northshoresynagogue.

From page 19 out and get dehydrated so quickly and they may need an infusion,” she said. South Shore Infectious Diseases’ antibiotic infusion center is a go-to for the treatment of MRSA, intra-abdominal infections, Diverticulitis, parasitic diseases or tick-bite related illnesses Lyme disease, resistant urinary tract infections, skin soft tissue infections, non-healing wounds, cellulitis, bone infections, ulcers and more. Dr. Lenny Weinstein, one of Syed’s partners with South Shore Infectious Diseases A.I.M.S., told the Advance and News Journal that there are two ways the center can help the community avoid spending time on a hospital bed: outpatient service such as IV treatment, as well as preventative measures. The goal is to avoid the default, whether by a patient or by area doctors, for every infection someone will need to spend time at a hospital. “We have seen success with the model from our Bay Shore office location. We recognize the lack of infectious disease treatment in private settings here on the North Shore, not in Jericho, Plainview, or Syosset…..You can find an infectious disease doctor but not a facility that will see patients on an outpatient basis -- the location tries to prevent hospital admission and the idea evolves from getting people out of the area’s hospitals. One problem that persists is people staying at hospitals for a long time because they may not be able to get the treatment and antibiotics they need, so it prolongs hospital stays and prevents home care set up or getting the IV lines set up for them to leave hospitals and go home -- assuming a safe discharge from hospitals the patient can come to us for their IV treatment. The other aspect would be preventing any hospital stay because certain infections can be treated if they require antibiotics and IV. After evaluating every patient we will focus on the remedies and continue with bloodwork and treatment until you get better -- people can treated here on the outpatient basis, and this has proven very successful from the standpoint of patients’ satisfaction,” Dr. Weinstein said. He explained that SSID has thousands of evaluations and positive feedback examples taken from patients who have been seen at the Bay Shore location. According to their website, the new Syosset A.I.M.S. hours for IV infusion will be seven days a week, including holidays, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and its office hours will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 to 2 p.m. More information on services and appointments is available online at southshoreid.com. When the September 17 event began, Dr. Syed announced that it was important to start out the new Syosset practice’s work in Syosset and Woodbury

with blessings from God “It is only appropriate for us to have faith leaders here today representing some of the many different faiths in our community and lead a prayer for us.” At the SSID grand opening Assemblyman Lavine presented her and the practice’s partners with a citation on behalf of the New York State Assembly and said it is a marvel that the wonderful Syosset/ Woodbury community can come together and celebrate kinship and respect all religions, “offering us enlightenment through your healing hearts.”

Rabbi Jay Weinstein speaks

The first speaker, Rabbi Jay Weinstein of Congregation Simchat HaLev commented on Dr. Syed’s leadership as a member of the Interfaith Clergy Council of Syosset-Woodbury, of which Rabbi Weinstein is the co-chair, and as an active parent and in the past two years as a candidate for the Syosset Board of Education. “Make this place, South Shore Infectious Disease and Medicine (A.I.M.S.) in Syosset a place of healing. May the physicians and nurses, the entire team at this place of healing be strengthened, made humble, and always feel supported by God. May your hearts always be open to listen and to hear the voice of your patients and their loved ones. May those who seek your care receive it with kindness, compassion and love. May you bring hope to those in pain and the ill, may the suffering and vulnerable be your teachers, and may your skills and knowledge instill trust. May you see in each person you treat their goodness, for they are indeed created in the image of God -- may God be tender towards you, may God encircle you and this holy place, may God strengthen you and give you the insight that you need, and continue to bless you with the ability to heal -- the complete healing of the soul and of the body. For those who seek your services before they travel, may they be inoculated as needed, travel safely, enjoy their journey and return home healthy,” Rabbi Jay said. The next religious leader to speak was Father Mike Maffeo of St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church at 205 Jackson Avenue in Syosset. “Blessed are You oh God our Father... make this place a house of blessing and a center of love. May the physicians practice the art of healing wisely for all and serve the sick with care. Grant the patients comfort in their illness so they may quickly regain their health and joyfully thank You for the favors they receive. We ask this in Your holy name, Amen,” Father Maffeo said. Mufti Mohammed Farhan of the Islamic Center of Long Island (ICLI) spoke next and offered prayers for his colleague from the Interfaith Council, Dr. Syed, and her partners at SSID in Syosset: “God, we ask for your help today

in your beautiful name and may you protect all of us gathered here for such an auspicious gathering. Bless the physicians and the people who are part of this beautiful SSID practice, to heal the souls of the people and treat their health and their bodies. Allow them to practice to the best of their manner, help them and help all those around us to make this place a place of blessings with ease and comfort for everyone. Allow us to be a means of ease and comfort for each and every one, allow us to support and help each other, provide us with the means and blessings for the entire community -- Amen,” he said. Over the summer Mufti Farhan led seminars including “The Meaning of Life” and a Quran reading program for children at the ICLI in Westbury. Also in attendance for the September 17 ceremonies were the Islamic Center of Long Island’s President, Habeeb Ahmed, and the chair of ICLI’s Board of Trustees Dr. Isma Chaudhry, who was named one of the ‘50 Most Influential People’ on Long Island’ in 2016 by the Long Island Press. They were joined by their colleague Mindy Perlmutter, the executive director of Jewish Communi-
