Nancy Burpee has been swimming competitively all her life. Not only against other elite swimmers, but also against a rare connective tissue disease. Then she faced her greatest challenge: lung cancer. Nancy was told she faced a choice: either major invasive surgery or wait and see if the tumor would shrink. Instead, she turned to NYU Winthrop Hospital and Dr. Laurence Spier, one of the country’s top robotic lung surgeons. Dr. Spier not only removed the tumor without removing the entire lung, he was able to “tease” her lung free from the chest wall. Nancy was amazed at the improvement in her breathing and stamina. In just three weeks, she was back in the pool, swimming faster than she had in years. Thanks to NYU Winthrop, Nancy is still competing. And in all the ways that count, she remains undefeated. The Royals are the 2018 GCAA Baseball Minors Division Third Grade Boys Champions! The undefeated Royals held off the gutty, gritty Yankees in a hard-fought 2-0 win. Before the game, the teams and their fans paid tribute to America as they lined up for the national anthem, played by Garden City Middle School student Michael Siragusa on his violin. James Schiraldi started the game for the home team Royals and pitched two strong innings. Aidan Carr earned the win as he pitched two innings and left with a slim 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single by Luke Nicosia in the third inning. Maximo Siragusa held the Yankees scoreless for the last two innings to earn the save for the champion Royals. Casey Henson’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th gave the Royals another run to account for the final score. The Royals also played some terrific defense in their win. Rich Sartorelli
made the defensive play of the game when he caught a fly ball to center field with a runner on second to keep the Yankees from scoring. Royals Johnny Gale, Matthew Fabilli, Ryan Manno, Kyle Glossman, Alex Mingoia-Murphy, and Nicky Henson all contributed to the win as well with their determined at-bats and flawless defense. Injured Royal Joseph LoPiccollo cheered for his teammates through out the game as he sat out with a hand injury. Coaches Joe LoPiccollo, Chris Siragusa, and Paul Gale congratulate their players for the win. They also congratulate the hard-fighting Yankees players: Jackson Castellanos, Matteo Ingrassia, Macklain Whalen, Jack Vessio, John Luca Antico, Vincent Lodato, Joe Arlia, Finn O’Sullivan, Braeden Wong, Brayden Cook, Ethan Klie, Ronan O’Donohue, Aiden Diaz, and Will Curly.
Maximo Siragusa delivers a pitch in the 6th inning to close out the game for the Royals.

GCAA Softball Spring Season Recap
GCAA Softball is wrapping up another exciting season for girls aged 6-14. This year, the program embarked upon new programs, including a 14U team and multiple tournaments. As the program continues to grow, we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the parents of the players in our program. Coach Drew shares that “the GCAA Softball parents are absolutely the greatest. They show up and bring a level of support and enthusiasm no matter what happens, win lose or draw.” This year, April was especially cold, pushing a lot of games to be re-booked into June and resulting in a level of intensity that the program hasn’t experienced in the past. Coach Drew continues that “as this year we had the most ever, 6 teams, playing in the post-season
and competitive games, the rescheduled games added a level of intensity our program hasn’t seen in many, many years. Its heartwarming to see these kids give 1000% playing back-to-back games, and even volunteering and helping out other GCAA team, and then seeing parents show up at 8:00am in Port Washington on Father’s Day, excited to support their kids, their coaches, and their program.” While the heart of the GCAA Softball program is recreational and designed for skill building and fun, GCAA is in the process of introducing several new 10U, 12U and 14U Tournament Teams (travel) for players interested in advancing the level of competition. As our program has grown, we’ll continue to evaluate how we are growing with the kids capabilities, and ensure we
offer fun and exciting opportunities. Special thanks is reserved for Mary Sievers, instrumental in coordinating a terrific season long program and an amazing season ending picnic. Have a great summer! We look forward to seeing most everybody in the fall (4th grade and up) as details on the summer & fall “Skills and Scrimmages” program will be released on our website (below) with registration opening mid-summer. http://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=gcaasoftball GCAA has run baseball in Garden City since 1955 and softball shortly thereafter (anybody with information on the origin of the softball program please email gardencity.ny.softball@gmail.com).

The U19 Boys Garden City Mavericks finished their Spring 2018 season with a 7-0-1 record winning 1st place in the LIJSL’s “Champion” division! This was an extra special season for the boys, as all Mavericks are high school seniors who will be attending college this coming fall. Although the boys all had challenging schedules, they all made time for a final run with the Mavericks and what will likely be their final GC Centennials travel soccer season. The Mavericks played their final game on the new artificial turf field at GC’s Community Park on Father’s Day in front of a large crowd of cheering and proud Mavericks parents. Special thanks to all Mavericks players and parents who have supported our team for so many years – thank you! On Monday, June 25th, we’ll be throwing a “Mavericks End of an Era” party from 5pm-9pm. All ex-Mavericks players and parents are most welcome to join us. Please contact Nick Sekas at sekasnp@yahoo.com. Congratulations to the Mavericks! We know that these fine young men really enjoyed each other’s camaraderie, competitiveness, fun and banter – and they are grateful to the GC Centennials soccer program! GCHS Trojans Boys Lacrosse Season Wrap Up
Our Champions 2018
James Basile celebrating State-winning goal with 1.2 seconds left Later this week, the senior class of 2018 will be graduating from Garden City High School. Amongst that group of seniors that contributed to the Trojans New York State Championship run are Liam Curtin, James Buckley, Cole Dutton, Matt DeSimpliciis, Teddy Dolan, Matt Granville, Chris Jordan, Kyle MacLeod, Joe McDonough, Liam Muldoon, Kieran Paskewitz, Stephen Spirakis, Jack Tynan, Kyle Steinbach, and Tyler Wuchte. Thank you for your commitment, dedication, teamwork, and perseverance. Those attributes will serve you well in the next chapter of your lives. Your legacy is complete………… The last month of the season was a whirlwind of competition and recognition for this team. After an uninspired loss at the Woodstick Classic, the team refocused and rededicated itself in practice. Sometimes a loss is a good thing…..(except to Manhasset). From that point, the Trojans reeled off 10 straight wins to earn County, Long Island, and New York State Championships. The playoff run started with a drubbing of Long Beach, an overtime goal by Liam Curtin to salvage a win against Southside, and the most lopsided playoff victory (15-5) over Manhasset in the history of this storied rivalry. With that win, the Trojans secured their 3rd consecutive Nassau County title. With the County title in hand, the Trojans then
Pleased to meet you, hope you guess my name….Matty D
All Long Island Defenseman Colin Hart focused on the ultimate prize, getting to the New York State Tournament. Never one to look ahead, the coaching staff kept the boys focused on one game at a time. In order to get there, they had to get by Harborfields from Suffolk County in the Long Island Championship. They did so in convincing fashion with a 12-3 win for back to back LIC’s. Next up was the downstate portion of the New York State Tournament against Westchester’s John Jay. This was supposed to be a tight matchup between two similar teams. In what was one of the most inspired efforts of the season, they blew the Indians out in a 14-4 win. The final pitted them against Victor, winner of three consecutive state titles against the upstart Trojans, who came into the season unranked by all media outlets. In what was an instant classic in state tournament history, the Trojans broke the string and hearts of Victor with a go-ahead goal by James Basile with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. The Trojans were New York State Champions and on the national radar as the 8th ranked team in the in the country. What a way to go out. As we put a ribbon on this magical season, the parents of this remarkable group would like to thank head coach Steve Finnell, Tim Holman, Joe Jacovina, and Michael Zigari for their time, effort, dedication, and leadership. We appreciate the sacrifices made to
ensure the boys were prepared physically and mentally for the challenges they faced this season. Congrats to Coach Finnell on earning his 200th career victory and Nassau County Coach of the Year honors in Class B. Many would argue this was his finest coaching job. Also, special thanks to the man that roams the sideline dodging players and referees with his long lens in hand. Phil Puccio has caught and shared many special moments that are now lifetime memories. This includes his time-consuming effort and video compilation of the Trojans’ road to the state championship. It can be viewed on Facebook or at https://philippuccio. smugmug.com/ Thanks to all the parents for their support this season. You were loud and proud. We especially want to thank the team moms that made sure the boys were well fed and hydrated before and after games during this long season. The student body of Garden City High School was dynamite… tick…tick…BOOM. The Class of 2018 wishes the underclassmen continued success in maintaining the winning tradition of the Garden City Trojan program. The torch has been passed, so continue to represent with class, dignity, and a competitive fire. Wherever we are, we are watching and cheering for you. Brothers for life……….. Go Trojans!!! Finally, there were season ending accolades earned by a number of Trojans. The Garden City High School senior sports awards dinner recognized the following student athletes for their outstanding achievements: McLeery Award – Outstanding Goal Scorer Liam Muldoon Silvestri Award – Outstanding Leader in Assists Liam Muldoon Bernard Moline Award – Most Valuable Player Tyler Wuchte Doc Dougherty Award – Outstanding Defensive Player Teddy Dolan Tomas B. Nolan Award – Dedication and Hard Work Liam Curtin Nassau County Honors: Justin Coppola, Tyler Wuchte, Liam Muldoon, Teddy Dolan, Colin Hart, Trevor Yeboah-Kodie, Danny Boccafola All Long Island Honors: Colin Hart

Garden City Challenger Lacrosse Father’s Day Tournament
The Garden City Challenger players and volunteers BY JANE NOBILE The Garden City Challenger Lacrosse team played their last home game of the Spring 2018 season with a special game on Father’s Day. Joining in the excitement of the day were members of the Half Hollow Hills Challenger Lacrosse team and Levittown Knights (Nassau County PAL League/Special Needs Unit) . What made this game even more exciting was a special appearance from the U.S. Marines stationed in Garden City who also joined the game. The U.S. Marines took time from
their personal time off to join the Challenger Lacrosse teams for a game and were treated like celebrities. The smiles on the faces of the players when the Marines arrived was priceless. Parents and grandparents who were at the game were also excited to see the Marines arrive. In between goals and after the game, the players took the opportunity to ask the Marines about what they do to protect our country. They learned how their sacrifice makes a difference to the citizens of the USA and what it takes to become a Marine. They were very impressed to hear about
all the training they do and the skills they learn as a U.S. Marine. The event was organized by Coach Brian Collins and Coach Trey of the Garden City Challenger team and was a huge success. Coach Brian said “We are thrilled that so many came to play and especially thankful to the Marines that came to play with us. It made our last game extra special and we hope to make this annual event”. After the game, the Marines, players, volunteers, and spectators were treated to some pizza and snacks to help celebrate the day.
The Garden City Challenger League provides various sports for the special needs community throughout the year. There is no fee to join any of the teams. In addition to lacrosse, there is baseball, basketball, golf, and tennis available. If you would like to participate as a player or volunteer with any of the sports programs, please email ajped95@msn.com for more information. The programs offered in the Challenger League are open to residents and non-residents of Garden City.
