After a two year hiatus, the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival will return this fall to the streets of Oyster Bay. Supervisor Joseph Saladino, his colleagues on the Town Board and organizers and sponsors of the 39th Oyster Festival announced the return of the iconic seaside festival this October 15 and 16. Supervisor Saladino, together with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver Jeff Pravato; joined with Catholic Health President & CEO Patrick M. O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA; Richard Kessel, Nassau County IDA; Harlan Friedman, Oyster Fest co-producer; and Judy Wasilchuck, co-president of the Oyster Bay/East Norwich Rotary, in making the announcement. “From delicious food vendors, various merchandise exhibits, amusement rides and a waterfront family fun zone – the list goes on – the Oyster Festival has something for everyone. For nearly four decades, this annual tradition has provided so many great attractions, and we are confident that it will come back this year better than ever,” said Supervisor Saladino. “More importantly, this wonderful event does so much more than give patrons the chance to enjoy a delicious meal and purchase some great merchandise. The Oyster Festival not only allows us to showcase our beautiful Town and all it has to offer, it is a major fundraising event which benefits several local non-profit organizations.” The Oyster Festival is the East Coast’s largest waterfront festival and attracts up to 200,000 people from all over the tristate area to Oyster Bay hamlet for this iconic event. In addition to delicious food vendors, various merchandise exhibits, amusement rides and a waterfront family fun zone, this year, the Oyster Festival will be the first seafood festival to take part in the Town’s new shell recycling program, through which the Town collects shells from local partners in an effort to help strengthen the marine ecosystem. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman added, “I am excited to join Supervisor Saladino in welcoming back the Oyster Festival after the popular event was canceled for the last two years because of the COVID pandemic. This great family friendly event brings thousands of visitors to Nassau every year, and is a great way to show off all Nassau County has to offer. Nassau is back and open for business!” “The annual Oyster Festival is a wonderful celebration of community and camaraderie,” said Dr. O’Shaughnessy. “At Catholic Health, we feel a deep connection to community and to Long Island’s heritage. It’s an honor to partner with the Town of Oyster Bay for this weekend event, one that truly reflects the community’s unique character.”

Bruges-Amsterdam by BoatBikeTours: Biking to Ghent BY KAREN RUBIN TRAVEL FEATURES SYNDICATE GOINGPLACESFARANDNEAR.COM Though technically our Day 2 of BoatBikeTours’ eight-day BrugesAmsterdam bike tour, our first ride takes us 35 miles from Bruges to Ghent along waterways, through farmland and villages and we get oriented to how they organize the ride, the gorgeous bikeways, local culture, and stunning scenery. We stop at a very interesting Canadian War memorial – it’s actually the mangled tank turned into sculpture - and our leader, Arnold Thurkow (who spent a career in the military) tells us the story of these World War II defenders. We stop next at Castle Lovendegem where our leader, Corrie Stein, tells the story of this place: it is privately owned by a Paris-based prominent wine merchant who grew up here and uses the castle for wine tastings (funny how contemporary history sounds more like gossip). We have a coffee break in the town of Aalter where I get to wander around and look into a bakery and a church. One of the most unusual sights along the trail that winds beside farms comes when Corrie stops at vending machines where you can purchase a basket of the freshest, sweetest strawberries you have ever savored (Corrie says there are even vending machines to buy fresh chicken!). As we set out, we quickly see just how popular cycling is in Belgium – one biking club after another and families on an outing, come as a steady stream on these magnificent bike paths, trails and dedicated roadways. Our group on this first day of riding has been a bit slow (not my fault,
After the canalboat tour (really excellent and appreciated), we still have another few miles to ride to get to St. Michael where our ship, the Princesse Royal is docked. This day’s ride turns out to be the longest and also the hottest of our trip and when we return to the ship we are greeted with fruit-infused ice water and snacks. We relax onboard the Princesse Royal and enjoy our dinner: a delectable pumpkin soup with basil; beef stew prepared like chili; a superb mango sorbet for dessert.
Touring Ghent by canalboat on Day 2 of BoatBikeTours’ Bruges-Amsterdam bike tour © Karen Rubin/goingplacesfarandnear.com I swear) so we have divided into two. I join the slower group so I don’t feel self-conscious shooting photos as I ride. As a result, we reach Ghent about 40 minutes after the first group, just in time to rush to meet up with the rest of our group for the pre-arranged sightseeing canal boat tour of the city (but the other group had 40 minutes to explore – we won’t make that mistake again). During the sightseeing canal boat trip, the guide points out a grain depot from the 1200s; a toll booth; a tiny tax house; a 16th century guild house; one of the historic city gates; a fish market that operated from the 15th century to the 1950s when it became a car wash but now is the visitor center. He points out a statue of a boy peeing – it’s a famous image - but he said it actually represents the leather tanners union because they used the urine of boys to smooth the leather (it was tasted to determine if the urine was of good quality), so there are many of these pissing statues. Ghent was one of first industrialized cities that made textile barons wealthy. But the men, women
and children who worked in factories lived in pollution, overcrowding and squalor – they worked in 16 hour shifts for low wages. This, along with the university, helps explain why Flemish Socialism was born in Ghent (still a liberal/progressive city, with Socialists still in the majority). He points to a cannon dating from the 15th century that was installed here in the 16th century for defense. “It was only used once – two people died operating it. Today it is a peace symbol.” Ghent was the birthplace of Charles V who became the Holy Roman Emperor. At the time, Ghent was the 3rd largest city in Europe. To honor their favorite son for his 500th birthday, the city built the Bridge of Imperial Delight decorated with his bust. (Nearby is a sign, “Boat Tourism. Noise Pollution.) We see a formidable castle, called the Hall of Justice, which (interestingly? ironically?) became a torture chamber. In 1949, students occupied the Castle to protest rising beer prices. “They didn’t change anything, but every November, they celebrate.”

Day 3’s ride, from Ghent to Merelbeke is 32 miles (or 24 for those wanting a shorter route) to Dendermonde-St. Amands. We start cycling along the canal and stop at Castle Van Laarne, and visit the small village for our coffee break. (The sign reads: Kasteel Van Laarne-Dit Domein is Prive Eigendom”) We ride on to Lake Donk, Belgium’s second biggest lake and a popular recreational center where we have the relaxing lunch we packed from the ship. Continuing on we take a free ferry across a small river, and bike along the river. We ride into the city of Dendermonde. Corrie points out a statue of Queen Astrid, who is like Belgium’s Princess Di. She died in the 1920s in a car accident when her husband was driving. “He was so distraught, he couldn’t bear to look at his kids and they were sent to live with someone else.” Many squares in the country have statutes to her. Bruges-Amsterdam by BoatBikeTours: Biking to Ghent Continued from previous page at The Hague (mostly about money) are heard. Corrie tells us about this town’s most unique and important festival, held every 10 years (the 2020 festival was delayed until May 28, 2022 because of COVID; 85,000 watched). There are banners all over the city featuring the Horse Bayard with four boys on its back. The legend (which I really can’t understand why this would be celebrated), goes like this: Aymon, Lord of Dendermonde who was related to Charles the Great (Charlemagne), had four boys who were on track to become knights. One boy was very strong (and apparently aggressive) and had to have strong horse. Bayard, to match. The boy played chess with Charlemagne’s son and in a fit, killed Charles’ son. Charles took their father captive, told the boy that to get his father back, he would have to give up his horse, Bayard. Reluctantly, the boy gave up the horse, which Charlemagne had drowned. So, every 10 years, the small town commemorates this event with a huge horse, 4 meters high, who carries 4 boys on its back. The boys who are chosen have to have grandparents and parents from here, be four boys born in a row (no sisters) and be between ages of 16-25. Dendermonde also holds a Traditional Giants Parade, Katuit, each year on the last Thursday of August when three giants - lndiaan, Mars and Goliath - parade through the town,
accompanied by 1000 actors in medieval attire, floats, bands, flag-tossers, professional street performers and torchbearers. We bike to St. Amands where the ship is docked (actually next to another BoatBikeTours’ ship, the Magnifique IV) and can walk into this quiet village before dinner. After dinner (beef carpaccio with truffles, pasta with salmon and lobster sauce), Corrie and Arnold lead us on an excursion to visit Sahara Stones, a gallery and home of artist Joris Maes and his wife, who gives us a tour and explains his extraordinary art. Joris built his house and everything in it, and spends his winter in the Sahara, driving down in a van, to collect fossils and stones which he sculpts for his art. The fossils are embedded along with stones in the walls of his house. “The house is the history of my life,” he tells us. The fossils, some of them absolutely enormous, encapsulate the history of earth, and Joris has turned them into rather marvelous sculptures – birds, animals. They are 360 million year old fossils, “before the continents formed,” he tells us. (sahara-art-stones.com)
Kasteel Wissekerke
On Day 4, we set out from St. Amands for a 30 mile ride to Antwerp (the shorter option is 21 miles). We stop briefly to see a16th century castle which, Corrie tells us, was once owned by a cousin of William of
Orange who led the Dutch revolt against Spanish King Philip II. The revolt – largely over religion (they call it religious freedom) began in 1568 and was finally won 80 years later. The castle is privately owned today. The cycle path follows the river. At Kruibeke, Corrie introduces us to what she calls their “statue of liberty” – a modern, sensuous statue of a woman, “curvey like the bends of the river.” The town is significant because Gerardus Mercator, the 16th-century geographer, cosmographer and cartographer, most famous for creating a revolutionary 1569 world map, was born here (by accident - his parents were visiting relatives). Mercator’s map represented sailing courses as a path of constant bearing, measured relative to true north (Rhumb lines)—an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts. In their day, they were as revolutionary as GPS, and improved navigation at a time when global shipping was the key industry contributing to a nation’s wealth. He wound up being imprisoned here in 1543 by the Catholic Church “for radical thinking. “When he couldn’t work, he became poor.” We ride passed Graventoren (Earl’s Tower) where he was imprisoned. There is also the remnants of a castle in Rupelmonde in the town of Kruibeke, where there is a statue of Mercator and a museum. A bit further on, we stop to eat our picnic lunch at a restaurant that is also
a farm museum, the VZW Museum De Schuur, with interesting antique implements that belonged to the proprietor’s husband (we see black and white photos of him). (www.museumdeschuur.be) It is just down the road from a stunning (privately owned) castle (Kasteel Wissekerke) and garden which presents a gorgeous scene. There has been a castle here since the 10th century, but the present one was largely built in the 15th century with lake, park and a suspension bridge. In fact, it is the suspension bridge, rather than the castle, that is of major importance: the bridge is one of the oldest surviving wrought iron suspension bridges in Europe, designed in 1824 by Jean-Baptiste Vifquain, an engineer from Brussels. “Though it only spans 23 meters, the bridge is of great industrial archaeological importance because of its historical and structural uniqueness,” notes read. The bridge, castle, gatehouse and pigeon tower were designated a protected historical monument in 1981. It is an idyllic scene. We bike on to Antwerp. Pink Lady Apples
BY JEFF RUGG
Q: I ate a Pink Lady apple and the seeds inside the core were sprouting roots. I planted a couple of them, and they are growing. Can I grow them and get Pink Lady apples in a few years? A: The answer is yes and no. Most apple trees need two different kinds of apple tree pollen to get a cross-pollination that will grow an apple. Pink Lady apples may produce some apples if only Pink Lady apple trees are around but will produce better if other varieties are nearby. If another variety contributed the pollen for your apple seeds, then you have a hybrid and not a pure Pink Lady. Your seedlings are either 50% Pink Lady or 100% Pink Lady, so they are worth growing to see what you get. Let’s go back to the beginning. Pink Lady is a hybrid between the Golden Delicious and Lady Williams varieties. This hybrid apple from 1973 is actually the variety called Cripps Pink. It is named after John Cripps who worked for the Western Australia Department of Agriculture. He crossed hundreds of apple varieties and grew the seeds until the over 100,000 trees matured and had fruit of their own. After thousands of taste tests, the tree that be-
came Cripps Pink was selected. There isn’t an apple variety called Pink Lady. Pink Lady is a trademark name. There are at least six different apple varieties that can be sold under the Pink Lady trademark. They include Cripps Pink, Barnsby, Lady in Red, Maslin, Rosy Glow and Ruby Pink. Mostly the differences between these apples are not likely to be noticed by consumers. Pink Lady trademarked apple varieties must meet certain standards of sugar content, firmness, blemishes and color to be called Pink Lady apples. About two-thirds of the Cripps Pink apples do not meet the Pink Lady standard and are sold as Cripps Pink apples for eating or making apple juice, applesauce and other products. John Cripps also crossed Red Delicious and Lady Williams apples to get the Cripps Red apple that is sold as the Sundowner apple. It is similar to the Pink Lady apple and can be substituted in baking and other recipes. One of the reasons the seeds in your apple were sprouting is because of the long time it takes the fruit to mature on a Cripps Pink apple tree. Most common
apple tree fruit mature in three or four months. Cripps Pink apples mature in seven months. This means that Cripps Pink apple trees will only produce apples in warm climates. During the long maturation process the chemicals that keep the seeds dormant in the apple core slowly dissolve away. If you are eating these apples in the spring and summer, they could be coming from growers in Australia or South Africa. If they are coming from U.S. orchards they have been stored for many months in refrigerated warehouses, since they store well. The seeds have gone through a simulated winter dormancy and are ready to grow. Plant the seeds in flower pots with potting soil. They will probably grow from a few inches to about a foot tall this summer. You can plant them outdoors in the fall, but the soil may dry out around the small root system. It will probably be better to place the pot in a large plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator until next spring. Planted outside in the spring the trees will grow larger root systems. It will take three to five years of good care to get the plants large enough to produce an apple. You will only get apples if you live in
warm climates that can get over 200 days of growing season weather. You will be growing Cripps Pink apple trees and maybe you will like the apples enough to call them Pink Ladies, but you will need a license to grow and market them as Pink Lady apples. Oh, Those Pirates, Witches and Wizards BY CLAIRE LYNCH Deirdre was sitting around talking with her best friend, Suzy, about how much she liked the Harry Potter movies and all things witches and wizards then she said Salem, Mass., was only a fivehour car ride from Long Island, did she want to take a ride there? Deirdre explained that Salem was historic because it was the site of the witch trials that were held in colonial Massachusetts between 1692-1693. In that time more than 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft. It was an unusual but fascinating time in American history and knowing that the historic events of Salem had taken place in New England, Deirdre had made a promise to herself that one day she’d visit there. Suzy said yes, that she, too, was fascinated by this event in history. Deirdre added that there was a pirates’ museum in Salem, too, so between the witches, the wizards and the pirates, they were game. Deirdre was enjoying some time off before she started working full-time. Two weeks later Deirdre and Suzy set out for Salem. Deirdre had asked her sister, Stephanie, and brother-in-law, Tyler, to feed her tabby cat, Tolliver, for a few days, so they were having a mini vacation. Their drive went well and they settled into a hotel in Salem. On Monday they toured the Salem Witch Museum and were fascinated with two presentations. The first one showed a historic look into the events of 1692. There were life-size stage sets, figures, lighting and a narration about the Salem witch hunt. The second explained how the word “witch” has evolved over time. Deirdre and Suzy absorbed all of the information and were glad to get a concise summary about the events so many years ago. On Tuesday they went to the New England Pirate Museum which was also in Salem. The wax figures were life size and authentic looking. The costumes, flags and artifacts told the pirates’ story. The whole ride home to Long Island Deirdre talked about opening a shop. A business major in college, she had
enjoyed working part-time in a men and women’s clothing boutique. She got to see up close how the business operated and what the customers asked for. Deirdre knew that Suzy was working a marketing job in NYC and she was ideal to bounce ideas off. She had a business degree from a different college and it was great to compare notes. Suzy hadn’t run her own business but she’d worked at two shops and her experiences were helpful. Wondering if focusing on two characters, witches and pirates, would be good, Suzy said yes because that way she could get several different costumes plus the many accessories that go with them. Back home Deirdre looked into what was involved in opening a small business. One day while driving on Evergreen Street in Spring Hill she found a good shop - the store was 1,400 square feet of space in a strip mall, perfect for what she needed. After inquiring and speaking with her parents about helping financially, Deirdre got the go-ahead then she got busy setting it up. Two months later, after a fresh coat of paint and new shelving, Deirdre opened her shop called The Pirates’ Cove. Inviting her parents, brothers, sisters, and friends to the ribbon-cutting ceremony the Chamber of Commerce had arranged on her first day, they watched as Deirdre used the oversized pair of scissors to cut the ribbon in front of her new store. They were all excited about this brand-new Pirates’ Cove - Deirdre’s mother said it was a clever idea and she had done well - her shop was shiny and new and it all looked great! Necklaces, baubles and beads abounded. In the next few months people came from all over Long Island looking for pictures of pirates, wood carvings of pirates and all of the accessories any swashbuckling pirate would need to defend themselves. Throughout October Deirdre displayed witch and wizard costumes on large mannequins. People looking for great Halloween costumes had the choice of pirates with black patches, kerchiefs, belts, scarves, sashes, coats

and boots as well as the witch and wizard outfits. There were costumes for adults and kids alike. Afterwards, when she saw photos of the Halloween costumes her customers had worn, Deirdre was delighted. Their costumes looked authentic and they were a big hit for the various Halloween festivities. After Halloween Deirdre went back to emphasizing the pirates’ costumes, accessories, wood carvings and signs. Many of her brightly painted pirate wood carvings stood four feet tall and people liked them because the pirates always had a certain air or attitude about them. Sometimes, when she walked past one, she could swear the pirate was winking at her. Years before, whenever Deirdre found herself daydreaming, it was all about opening her own shop and becoming a small business owner. Having her very own store would give her the flexibility and creativity she craved. She could order inventory, set up her shop according to her own vision and interact with the customers who would come and go. Deirdre would become

involved in her community and talk up the benefits of small businesses whenever possible. When Suzy stopped by The Pirates’ Cove she saw Deirdre happily chatting with customers and answering their questions. She was pleased that Deirdre’s dream of being a shop owner was working out so well. Deirdre was content surrounded by sunken treasure chests that had been brought back to land in her shop and by all of the colorful scarves that complete a pirate’s costume. When her parents stopped by her mother would give Deirdre some decorating tips and her father, ever the character, would walk among the customers dressed as a pirate. He’d talk like a pirate and would walk like a pirate as he strode among the aisles brandishing a plastic sword and smiling with the customers. All was well in the land of pirates and witches. This is fiction.

Why Should You Believe Me? BY TOM MARGENAU I frequently hear from readers who tell me about Social Security-related advice they got from a friend or relative, or from a Social Security Administration representative. They are writing to ask me if the information they received is correct. Sometimes it is. But many times, it’s not. Actually, let me clarify that. Social Security information they get from a friend or neighbor or relative is frequently wrong. The advice they get from an SSA rep is usually right. But sadly, more than a few times, it’s also been wrong. (I’ve written past columns about this issue, primarily blaming the lack of training that current SSA representatives get.) Anyway, when the information is wrong, I of course try to set them straight. But then I sometimes place myself in the shoes of the questioner, and I wonder if they think this: “Why should I believe this guy?” After all, the advice or answer I give them becomes just one more piece of their Social Security puzzle. What makes my answer more reliable than the answer they got from the other person, or other people? Well, all I can tell you is this. No. 1: I worked for the Social Security Administration for 32 years -- in a variety of increasingly responsible jobs in a variety of locations around the country. No. 2: I never really thought of myself as just another government bureaucrat. I was always a student of the history of Social Security. I was keenly interested in Social Security laws and rules, but also in the rationale behind those laws and rules. No. 3: I’ve been writing this column for the past 25 years. No. 4: I’ve written a book about Social Security that from time to time shows up on Amazon’s “bestseller” list. So, bottom line: I know Social Security pretty darn well and I think you can trust the answers I give you. And now, here are examples of questions from people who got some bad information about their Social Security situations. Q: I’m 63 and I’m planning to wait until I’m 70 to file for my Social Security. My wife just turned 62. My wife didn’t work much outside the home, so her Social Security benefit is much smaller than mine. I was planning to have her file for Social Security now and then switch to part of mine when I turn 70. But a Social Security rep told us over the phone that she can’t do that. He said if my wife files for her benefits now, she can’t switch to mine later on. Is that true? A: It’s absolutely false. What you wanted to do is a very common occurrence and I’m surprised the SSA rep you talked to didn’t know that. Many thousands of women start out getting their own Social Security benefit. Then
when the husband files at a later date, they can file for whatever extra spousal benefits they might be due. In fact, here is roughly how they will figure your wife’s spousal rate once you file at age 70. They will take her full retirement age benefit and subtract that from one-half of your full retirement age benefit. (Not your age 70 rate.) Any difference will be added to your wife’s reduced retirement benefit. Before I end this discussion, I must clarify something. Some of you may remember that I’ve said many times that when people file for Social Security, they must file for any other benefits they are due at the same time. For example, if the guy who asked this question were already getting his own retirement benefits, then his wife must simultaneously file for her own benefits and whatever spousal benefits she might be due. But in this situation, at the time this woman would file for her Social Security, the husband is not yet getting any benefits. So, this so-called “deemed filing rule” doesn’t apply in her case. She can file for her own benefits now, and later, once her husband files, she can claim the extra spousal benefits on his record. Q: I am 59 and recently retired. My husband is 67 and already getting Social Security. A friend told me I can get my husband’s benefits at 60 and then switch to my own later on. Is this true? A: If you were a widow, you could do that. But it sounds like your husband is very much alive. In that case, you have to wait until you are 62 years old before you’re eligible for any Social Security. And because your husband is already getting benefits, the deemed filing rule mentioned above applies. So, you’d have to file for your own benefits first. Then IF you are due any extra spousal benefits, you would file for them at the same time. But you notice that was a pretty big IF. At 62, you’d be due about 70% of your own benefit, or about 30% of his. And I’ll bet your own benefit is more than 30% of his. Q: I’m 62 and still working part time making about $40,000 per year. My financial adviser told me I should take my Social Security now and invest that money in real estate. But a neighbor told me that the government will take back some of my Social Security because of my earnings. Who’s right? A: Unless there is something about your situation I don’t know, your financial adviser is wrong, and your neighbor is right. People who are under their full retirement age and still working usually are not due any Social Security benefits. Let’s look at your situation. The law says that for every $2 you earn over a prescribed limit, $1 must be withheld
from your Social Security checks. The 2022 limit is $19,560. So, your $40,000 in earnings are $20,440 over that limit. And half of that, or $10,220 must be withheld from any benefits due this year. Let’s say your benefit rate is $2,500 per month. If you filed now (in August), you’d be due five Social Security checks for 2022 totaling $12,500. But from that, the SSA would have to withhold $10,220, leaving you with only $2,280 to invest in real estate. I’ve got a barn in my backyard worth about that if you want to buy
it. So, I suggest you wait until you retire or turn full retirement age, whichever comes first, to file for Social Security and start your real estate adventures. If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has a book with all the answers. It’s called “Social Security: Simple and Smart.” You can find the book at www.creators.com/books, or look for it on Amazon or other book outlets. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

8 Strategies to Graduate College Debt-free
There was a time when I didn’t have much opinion on paying for college with student loans. That was before the advent of email and thousands of messages, all with a similar subject line: “Help! I’m drowning in student loan debt!” That was before I learned that about 85% of college graduates do not end up working in their major. That was before I heard from Jim P., who took all the student loans he could get to pay for college and law school. He assumed he’d quickly land a cushy big-bucks job and pay back $200,000. The fifth time he failed the bar exam, he gave up on being a lawyer. But the debt goes on. That was before I met Peter K., who became a chiropractor on borrowed funds. He couldn’t stand the profession once he got into it. Now he’s teaching high school math. Too bad teachers don’t make enough money to service $160,000 in student debt. But the debt goes on. That was before I heard from the Nebraska couple with $60,000 in student loans. They were going to be teachers. Then the baby came along, and the teaching position didn’t. It’s all they can do to keep food on the table now that the family has grown to five. They’ve exhausted all their deferment and forbearance options. Their monthly payment is twice the house payment. The stress has all but blown that family apart. But the debt goes on, and so could I, but I think you get the point. It’s not as if student loans and significant credit card balances are mandatory graduation requirements. You don’t have to borrow your way through college. It is possible to graduate debt-free, but it takes hard work. And you’ll have to buck a financial system that encourages students to take the easy way out by diving into a lifetime of debt. The secret to graduating debt-free is
uate.
to use every strategy imaginable to get the cost as low as possible so you can pay as you go. That could mean working two jobs while carrying a full load every semester. It may mean working spring break, winter break, Christmas holidays and every summer. The definition of college does not include “a life of ease.” You will never regret working harder than you’ve ever worked in your life for four years, and then graduate knowing your degree is paid in full. You will always regret that you chose to live it up free and easy on student loans for four years, graduating with a legal obligation to spend the rest of your life paying for it. Does anything about that make sense to you? NO. 1: START COLLEGE WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL Take all the free advanced placement classes you can in high school to help knock down college tuition costs. Plan it right, and you can enter college as a debt-free sophomore with one year paid in full. AP classes require students to take a rigorous test at the end of the class. You can qualify for one to two semesters’ worth of college credit if you score well. You may also get a bump in your grade point average. NO. 2: COMMUNITY COLLEGES Every state offers two-year colleges, typically referred to as community colleges. This is the place to get all your
lower-division prerequisite courses at cheap tuition rates that will transfer to the college or university of choice for the two final years. That means you’ll have two more years to save up for the more expensive finish. NO. 3: STATE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Most four-year state schools offer an excellent affordable education. Our older son graduated from a prestigious California state university with a degree in film. He lived at home and graduated debtfree. Oh, and did I mention Jeremy Hunt has gone on to win numerous awards, including an Emmy? NO. 4: WORK AT THE SCHOOL Many colleges give discounted or free tuition to employees’ family members. There are lots of nonteaching jobs on a big campus. I’ve heard from many parents who left their regular employment to work at the school their college students would attend. NO. 5 : GRANTS A grant is a flat-out gift of money to be applied to tuition, with no requirement to repay. The most common is the Pell Grant, money from the federal government to assist low-income undergraduates. Learn more at Finaid.org. NO. 6: WORK-STUDY PROGRAMS Under a federal program, work-study provides on-campus jobs for students. There is no requirement to repay the money even if the student does not grad-
NO. 7: MILITARY An excellent education is often a benefit for students willing to enlist. For example, the military will put you through medical school if you enter as an officer and agree to stay for some time upon completing your residency. NO. 8: APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS All kinds of scholarships go unawarded every year. Many are not based on need but rather ability or even ethnic heritage. But don’t get suckered into paying a service $800 or more to do what you can do yourself: search! As a general rule of thumb, if a scholarship or a scholarship-search service asks you for money upfront, it’s probably a scam. Start searching now if you are a junior or even a sophomore in high school. And even if you’ve already started college, many scholarships are available for your last years. Shake No More BY CHARLYN FARGO You probably know that extra salt isn’t healthy. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Most of us get upwards of 3,300 milligrams per day. It’s true that most of that sodium comes from processed foods like hot dogs, bacon, sausage, canned foods, condiments, cheese, pickles and chips. However, a new study finds it’s not just sodium from processed foods that’s unhealthy. Using the saltshaker at the table can shorten our lives. We all have those family members who grab the saltshaker before they even taste the food set before them. It’s a habit that ac-
counts for 6% to 20% of total salt intake, according to study authors. In the study, published in the European Heart Journal, a total of 501,379 participants from the UK Biobank study completed a questionnaire on the frequency of adding salt to foods before they ate them. Urine samples for sodium were collected at baseline and monitored after 24 hours. The information didn’t include salt used in cooking, only adding salt at the table. Participants were followed for nine years. Researchers found 18,474 premature deaths. They also found that eating more fruits and vegetables, which are typically high in potassium, helped reduce deaths. Death rates were higher in participants
with low intakes of fruits and vegetables than in those with higher intakes. Always adding salt to foods was related to 1.5 years lower life expectancy at age 50 years in women and 2.28 years lower life expectancy in men compared with participants who never or rarely added salt to foods. The bottom line? Even reducing sodium by a small amount can be a healthy habit. Take the saltshaker off the table and eat more fruits and vegetables.
Q and A
Q: What are truffles? A: Considered delicacies, truffles are the fruit of underground mushrooms that form a symbiotic relationship with the roots of certain trees, including oak,
birch and hazel. Their strong smell attracts specially trained dogs and female truffle hogs used to hunt and harvest them. Their nutrient values vary among species and growing region, but edible fungi are known to contain calcium, potassium and magnesium and are a good source of digestible protein. Because they can be quite intense -- in flavor and price -- just a small amount makes a difference. Charlyn Fargo is a registered dietitian with SIU Med School in Springfield, Illinois. Three Decades of Stargazing! BY DENNIS MAMMANA Week of August 14-20, 2022 It’s hard to believe, but it will be 30 years on Aug. 19 since I published my first “Stargazers” column. Over those years, we’ve seen eclipses darken the land, planets converge in the sky or transit across the sun, meteor showers rain from above, and some of the most spectacular comets in history drift mysteriously across the silent heavens. Some of my most memorable cosmic events of the past three decades have been standing every year in the frozen outback of Alaska as the colorful curtains of the aurora borealis dance magically among the glistening stars, watching a total solar eclipse over the ancient Cambodian temple of Angkor Wat as Buddhist monks beat drums to scare away the sun-eating dragon, and staring slack-jawed at the iridescent bluegreen tail of Comet Hyakutake arching more than halfway across the sky! Adding to those memories, just a few weeks ago I watched as NASA unveiled the first breathtaking images produced by the new James Webb Space Telescope, an instrument that has already begun to revolutionize the science of astronomy. Of course, it’s not just these superspectacular celestial events that capture our imaginations. Sometimes it’s the simplest and most common. For me, just gazing quietly into the stars of summertime is enough to evoke fond memories of childhood, when my fascination with the universe was just beginning to bloom. Quite a lot has occurred in the heavens since 1992, and I’m still amused to recall the column’s humble
beginnings with the San Diego Union-Tribune. While considering whether to publish “Stargazers,” my editor asked if I honestly thought there would be enough happening up there to sustain a weekly column. Seriously? Three decades later I think we know the answer. In that time, I’ve submitted more than three-quarters of a million words along with more than 1,500 illustrations, for which my heartfelt gratitude must go to all the editors who have cheerfully dealt with every single one of them -- and me! “Stargazers” has long since become syndicated through Creators Syndicate, and readers can now follow me through free email subscriptions and on Facebook, peer deeply into the heavens with my popular Borrego Night Sky Tours or join me for my annual Alaska aurora borealis adventures -- none of which I could have even imagined back in the early days of this column. Since that first article 30 years ago we’ve traveled together more than 17.5 billion miles around the sun, and our star has carried us nearly 150 billion miles in our journey around the Milky Way’s center. And youngsters who enjoyed my first columns now have families of their own and are well on their way to sharing the amazing night sky with grandchildren. Yikes! I hope that, during our time together, my words have inspired you to appreciate the nighttime sky and to view the universe, the world and each other a bit differently, and that they have helped you to create some wonderful memories. I eagerly look forward to sharing with you another three decades -- and more -- of celestial discovery, and
I hope that you’ll continue along for what promises to be an even more exciting and thrill-packed cosmic journey! Visit Dennis Mammana at dennismammana.com. COPYRIGHT 2022 CREATORS.COM

Mom Overboard BY TRACY BECKERMAN The morning of my daughter’s wedding dawned bright and sunny with crisp blue skies and not a cloud to be seen. But it was raining... Inside the house. “JOEL!!!” I yelled to my husband from inside my bathroom where I had just discovered the deluge cascading from the ceiling. “It’s raining in the bathroom!” I heard his hurried steps pound up the stairs before he appeared breathless at the door. He assessed the situation and then said succinctly, “Well, that’s not good.” “Not good” was putting it mildly. We had a full house with the bridal coupleto-be in one bedroom, my son and his girlfriend in another, three bridesmaids bunked up in another bedroom and several assorted members of the bridal party elsewhere on the premises. There were three bathrooms, and apparently one of them was leaking and one of
them was being leaked into. And we had a wedding to all get ready for later that afternoon. It was like the movie “Mamma Mia!” met “Titanic.” “Turn off the water upstairs!” I shouted to my husband. “Don’t flush the toilet,” yelled my husband upstairs. “Ruff, ruff!” barked my daughter’s dog, the only one who genuinely seemed happy about the mess. Meanwhile from down below I heard my son yell, “UH-OH! Mom, it’s raining down here, too!” I raced to the floor below to find that the water that had leaked from the third-floor bathroom into the second-floor bathroom had now found its way into the first-floor bathroom. We were three for three. I started grabbing towels from the laundry room, which was still, somehow, miraculously dry, and began throwing them onto the floors to stem the flow of water. “You know, it’s supposed to be good luck if it rains on your wedding day,” I

said to my husband who had appeared from the basement with a wrench and a bucket. “Outside,” he replied. “It’s good luck if it rains outside.” “Oh,” I said. I had to admit, it did not seem like a lucky start to the day. The good news was that it was beautiful outside and we were having an outdoor wedding. The bad news, of course, was it was cloudy with a chance of monsoon in the house. Additionally, we didn’t have time to find a plumber who worked on a Sunday who could arrive immediately so we could all get ready in time for the wedding. And while my husband was handy in a “change a roll of toilet paper” kind of way, he was not handy in a “find a busted water valve and replace it without having the bathroom cave in” kind of way. I began having flashbacks to the time we lived in a house with two adults and two toddlers and only one bathroom. The toilet broke and we were forced to use my daughter’s potty for three days.
It could have been worse. We could have had no potty. I was beginning to think that we were up the wedding creek without a paddle when fortunately, my husband was able to locate the shut-off valve and get the leak plugged and the water turned back on. I was all set to get back into get-ready mode when suddenly I found a puddle in the bathroom again. “Oh, no!” I cried. “Something else is leaking!” My daughter appeared at my side and looked down. “Don’t worry, mom,” she said. “It’s only the dog.” Tracy Beckerman is the author of the Amazon Bestseller “Barking at the Moon: A Story of Life, Love, and Kibble,” available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online! Students in the Adventures in Local History summer program in the Levittown Public School District have enjoyed trips to several nearby historical sites, helping shed light on the significance of these important landmarks. At their first visit to the Smithtown Historical Society, students learned about the historical significance of Smithtown and Long Island during the early to late 1700s. Students practiced writing with a quill pen and ink, learned how to use leather stamping tools and created tavern signs, dip wax candles and clay pinch pot candle holders. The group’s second trip brought them to the Holocaust Museum and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, where students went on a guided tour hosted by the son of a Holocaust survivor. Anita Weisbord, a Holocaust survivor, told her story of life in Vienna and how she survived by taking the

kindertransport to England in 1938. On day three, students visited Walt Whitman’s birthplace. They toured the historic home and learned about Whitman’s early life on Long Island and how it influenced his poetry. Students took part in a poetry workshop based on imagery of one of Whitman’s original works, “The Word Below the Brine.” The students then went to the Old Bethpage Restoration, where they toured the colonial village which featured homes, a general store, an inn and a schoolhouse. The final day took students to the Cradle of Aviation Museum, where they learned about historic aircrafts and watched a movie about Mars in the domed theater.
