Proof of Indian Terrorism handed to UN Chief

Pakistan has asked the United Nations to restrain India from interfering in Pakistan and refrain from activities aimed at destabilizing Pakistan, said a statement issued on Friday. Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, delivered a report India's interference and terrorism in Pakistan, to UN-Secretary Antonio Guterres, along with a letter from Sartaj Aziz, Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs. The report contains additional information and proof of Indian/ RAW interference in Pakistan and involvement in Terrorism- particularly in Balochistan, FATA and Karachi. Ambassador Lodhi has earlier in October 2015 presented three reports to the then secretary-general Banki-moon, which were said to be containing proofs of Indian interference in Balochistan, Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Karachi. But the move did not get too much traction. In the covering letter sent with a report, Sartaj Aziz noted that the arrest of Indian RAW agent Kulbhushan Jadhav from Balochistan

and his confessional statement admitting involvement in activities aimed as destablising Pakistan, and support 10 terrorist elements indicated Pakistan's longstanding position about India's involvement in such activities. The report also contains evidence of attempted violation of maritime boundary by an Indian submarine. India was carrying out these activities in clear contravention of the UN charter and the resolutions of the UN Securiy Council on counter-terrorism and international conventions on terrorism it read. "India's hostile intentions towards Pakistan were also borne out by recent statements of its political and military leadership." Pakistan continues to desire peace will all its neighbors including India is convinced that the common adjectives of economic development and prosperity for our people can best be promoted through regional cooperation, conflict, resolution and peaceful settlement of disputes, the letter read. "At the same time, however, Pakistan will resolutely defend its territorial integrity and take all necessary measures to counter any threat to its Security,"it concluded.

Senate asked to blow off death penalty revival Cherry Masibay @TheLodestarJSHS

T

he Senate was entreat to dump the re-imposing of death penalty yesterday even it implies to the drug-related case only. “The Senate should throw it out. The restoration of capital punishment is an utter waste of time and taxpayers’ money,” Rep. Lito Atienza of party-list group Buhay said. He said even if the Congress approves the penalty because it was the wish of President Duterte, the would be no likely extrajudicial killings during his term. “We will challenge the constitunality of this bill before the Supreme Court. The case will take years. Assuming the high court would uphold its constitunality, it will take more years to convict a single offender. Once there is a conviction, the appeal process follows. By that time, President Duterte will no longer be in office,” Atienza said. He pointed out that a convict could question the constitunality of the mode of the execution. “The convict could argue that

hanging or shooting constituents is cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment, which the Constitution prohibited,” he added. Atienza said Congress to instead the restoration of the capital punishment. “We should juat focus on suppressing crime by stamping out rampant corruption, which is really the problem besetting law enforcement, prosecution service, judiciary and our prisons,” he said. “We need wide-ranging criminal justice system reforms to ensure that every felon is apprehended, prosecuted, convicted and locked up. This is our best strategy to fight crime-to discourage other would be offenders.” he said. Atienza said though the bill provides for three modes of execution, “in reality, the methods are down to hanging by the neck or by firing squad because lethal injection drugs are not available anymore.” “In fact, in America, in the few states that still subscribe to the death penalty, executions are in total disarray due to the lack of sodium thiopental, the first of the three-drug cocktail used in lethal injections,” he said. Atienza said the manufacture and global trade of sodium thio-

pental, a powerful anesthetic, has been stopped by governments and international human rights groups opposed to the death penalty. He noted that the previous and now-repealed 1993 Death Penalty Law or Republic Act 7659 originally provided for electrocution and once available, gas poisoning, as the method of execution. However three years later, Congress decided to pass another law, Republic Act 8177, which dumped electrocution and gas poisoning and designated lethal injection as the new mode of execution. Atienza said the late senator Ernesto Harrera, principal author of both laws, went on record to say that Congress opted to specify lethal injection since it was then deemed the method that would best conform with the 1987 Constitution’s prohibitition against the infliction of cruel, degrading and inhuman punishment. Erap backs death penalty. For his part, he is agreeing about the restoration of capital punishment. Criminals continue to commit crimes because they are not afraid of the life sentence, Estrada said. “I’m in favor of the death penalty law,” Mayor Estrada said

Legazpi bishop to youth: Utilize social media to defy death penalty Cherry Masibay @TheLodestarJSHS

LIGAO CITY, Philippines – A Catholic bishop from Legazpi sends a message for the youth to make use of social media to oppose death penalty and the extrajudicial killings that is allegedly happening in the country. Bishop Joel Baylon of the Diocese of Legazpi addressed participants of the 8th Diocesan Youth Way of the Cross at Kawa-Kawa Hill in Ligao City, Albay on Saturday, March 11. “Use your capacity to post on social media against extrajucial killings, death penalty, and be online missionaries of God,” Baylon said. From July 1, the start of Duterte’s adminiration up to January 31,2017, there were 7,080 people killed in the administration’s war on drugs, both from police operations and vigilante-style killing. From March 6 to 12

this year, 14 more deaths were recorded. Baylon said that doing those were not the solution to the country’s problem. “We do not wish the sinners to die… because they can be brought back to the fold law and of God. We are hoping that peace should reign again,” he said. “To the youth, don’t welcome drugs because it will not help you, but destroy you. So, influence your friends not to take drugs,” he added. The death penalty was the main focus of Duterte’s administration. It was recently approved by the House of Representatives on 3rd and final reading but was challenged to the Senate. Leaders of the Catholic are recently using their voice to speak about stopping drugs, extrajudicial killings and death penalty. NEW PRESIDENT!

YAGIN, THE NEW PRIDE OF SUMULONG? "Can he make Sumulong Great again?" Shemah Eliza Lim and Cherry Masibay

N

ew, peculiar and unexpected, those are the words that you can say and think about the victory of Patric James Yagin of Grade 9-Lapu Lapu in the election for the upcoming President of the Supreme Student Government on February 23, 2017. This is another school year that the new president of the Supreme Student Government is not from the crème of the crop or particularly known as star section. Yagin proved that the presidential seat does not only belong to the higher sections but also the lower sections can attain it. He is confident, witty, friendly and full of ideas for his coming term. “Akala ko yung mga nakasama kong nanalo ay mga seryoso, mahirap pakisamahan at mahirap i-approach,”(At first, I thought that those students who won together with me are the serious type of person, hard to mingle with and approach) he said. That all vanished when the newly selected officers together with the other current officers was humbly and honorably invited to participate in a Student Congress Leadership Seminar that mainly focuses to train, to mold, to build, to hone new skills and talents, to become a capable, excellent and outstanding leader at STI Cubao last March 8, 2017, Wednesday. “Mali pala yung inaakala ko all this time sa kanila. Yun pala ito

New SSG President Patrick James Yagin visits the Lodestar staff and had a conversation with them ay kabaliktaran ng lahat ng aking naging pananaw sa kanila. Madali pala sila pakisamahan, maingay at may pagkakalog sila pero seryoso sa oras na ang pinag-uusapan ay mga importanteng bagay na tungkol sa paaralan atkapag kailangan,”( I was wrong all this time about them. Instead, it was the completely opposite of what I thought of them. They are very easy to deal and socialize with, they’re noisy and crazy but they can also be earnest when the topic is about a serious matter that involves the school or when it is

needed) Yagin said during the Student Congress Leadership Seminar in STI Cubao. Yagin was interviewed by some journalism students about the election he unanimously won. “What I felt when I have won the election was mixed emotions or feelings. First, I was glad I’ve won the election because I was given the opportunity to lead and serve not only in our class but for the entire school. I also felt very happy that the students trusted and voted me for the position and because I won. Sec-

ond, I felt very sorry for the other candidates who didn’t won especially my two opponents Alfred Devon Tolentino of ARISE Partylist of 9-Rizal and Angeline Navarro of Insta Partylist of 9- Bonifacio.,” “Of course, there are lots of times and cases that someone will win and someone will lose. If It is only possible that all of us will be given an opportunity to win. Why not?,” he added in an interview. Third, he was nervous due to the issues that arised after he won the election but stated that he doesn’t

mind those things. “What I want to do make Sumulong a much better school for next school year is to let the Sumulongians enjoy and at the same time to learn new things, develop skills and talents that can benefit and they can use in the future, widened their social capabilities,” Yagin stated in a fast talk session together with the journalism students in Grade 9- Rizal. “I think Yagin would do good in his job as a SSG President for next school year because I know he has the capability to lead and unite the entire Sumulong. I, for myself, don’t know him very well so I better not judge him. Instead of judging him, I put my trust on him that he can do it. I know that it is impossible for him to do it by himself so for me, what I can say is that we need to support him. We need to support him in every cause and so that he can lead us for the future of Sumulong,” Grade 10 Representative, Bernadette Sibucao said in an question and answer game. Ian Raphael Lopez, the current Grade 10 Rep. also showed his support towards Yagin by posting in the social media convincing the students to put their faith and trust in him. “At first, I have a different opinion about Yagin and I felt very bad about it right now. But as I started to get to know him, that all changed. Right now, I can see a brighter future as Yagin will be leading us in the next school year. I see him as a light unto others that he can see what we can’t see. I’m very glad that he won because I know that he deserves it. I’m looking forward in his term and I know it will be fun,” said Shemah Eliza Lim, the newly elected Vice President of the Supreme Student Government

Haq was answering journalists' questions about the situations in Kashimir, and if Guterres had been able to understand the Kashimir dispute and would he be talking to PM Narendra Modi the Prime Minister of India to start a dialogue with Pakistan. Haq was asked if there was time-

line as to UN Chief would talk to leaders from the two countries, he said that as with any number of long-running situations, there were a lot of complex issues" that needed to be examined. The UN chief "will…certainly…try to see what can be done to be improve the situation on the ground," Haq said. Pakistan has repeatedly asked the UN to intervene in Kashimir, particularly after the month-long unrest and violence in the Kashimir valley last year. Ban-Ki Moon Guterres' predecessor expressed his concern at the violence but refrained from offering facilitation on mediation. Since 1972 India has been opposed to any third party involvement.

Becoming a Leader, How to Deal with Criticism ? Supreme Student Government had its substitute for the next School Year 2017-2018. The campaign started last February 20-22, 2017. Each partylist gave the utmost performance to encourage each Sumulongians to vote them. Day after the campaign, was the time to vote. The people’s choice where seen while the counting of votes where observed. As the new set of officers came from different partylists, especially the elected president, Patrick James Yagin (Hokage Partylist)of Grade 9 Lapu-lapu. Athens Tumaneng (Insta Partylist) as the new Grade 9 Representative and the rest positions were won by the Arise Partylist. They were combined as one to lead the school starting the coming months for this year. Yagin came from the section which was second to the last of the Grade 9 Level. Lapu-lapu is said to have odd pupils, having naughty and lazy individuals. But not all of them. Yagin became the voice of lower segments , pursuing that not only higher sections were the talented to be a model and taskmaster of the said position. Since Grade 4 in Elementary Level, Yagin had dalliance oftenly his favorite sport, volleyball. Before and after the class, even in vacant time, he is seen playing with other schoolmates. We can observed that he is now excellent in it because he really loves playing. For him, it is difficult to give up and having his huge responsibility in his 10th Grade, he chooses both. He wants

to maintain his eagerness in playing. Yagin had his own way for not neglecting the duties and his hobby. Notwithstanding with his background as a pupil, Yagin continuously efface oneself. Many questioned if he can do his job well, because of the section he belongs. While others embolden his confidence to do the job. Having both his supporters and bashers, he his more motivated. He used everyone’s opinion or reaction about his to be stronger and the best leader for the next school year. Yagin is thankful whether he hears positive or unpleasant comments. Yagin’s main project for the coming year, is to maintain the school’s cleanliness. Although many teachers lead this activity, Yagin wouldn’t stop to reach his main goal. He is also willing to implement the platform made by the Arise Partylist.”I’m not the only one who won , but also them. So I’m open to work the activities well. Yagin cannot do all the job alone, so with his fellow officers, they were completely combined for good. Nobody can control each individual’s reaction or outlook in a matter. We think according to our taste and beliefs. And that is a natural to a person. Yagin maybe humble for these couple of weeks, but when he is in the position, can he handle the pressure well? Will their be a change in his behavior? Will he be able to perform everything he promised? Most importantly, is Yagin still be the same when he starts to lead ?

Is it a tocsin? Peace talks continue between the government and National Democratic Front or NDF after President Rodrigo Duterte put the kibosh on it. National Defese Secretary Lorenzana agreed a bilateral ceasefire with the NDF. He also added that it was difficult to stop New People's Army or NPA on doing heinous events. Last month, in Cagayan De Oro, 3 soldiers were killed in an ambush by NPA. The 3 soldiers namely Cpl. Pat Non, 40; Cpl. Niño Christopher Talabor, 29; and Sgt. Owen Yee, 39; all members of the Bayanihan Group of 8th Infantry Battalion. The said ambush can be described as "barbaric" because the soldiers were unarmed and in civil-

ian clothes only. Grycel Talabor, wife of one of the soldiers killed said, she did not expect her husband Niño Talabor would be killed. She also added that her husband is a strong and skilled soldier. What NPA did was a devilish style, only those who doesn't have spirit will do this kind of unmerciful thing. CPP-NPA-NDF are rebels and we should not trust anyone of them that they are unto us. Should we need to give them our trust? Or should we focus more on how to prevent these crimes? Ambushing three soldiers who were defenseless that time, is it a tocsin to stop this nonsense peace talks?

he Department of Health (DOH) will distribute condoms in school clinics and health centers, both public and private in the first weeks of June 2017. DOH Secretaty Paulyn Ubial said that with the tandem of Department of Education (DepEd) they will teach the ABC Framework, which stands for Abstinence, Being faithful and Condom Use. Secretary Ubial said that their advocacy to the youth is to have self-restraint and delaying sexual debut and if the young peole cannot do that, they need to be faithful to have one partner only. She also added that the condom use purpose is to protect themselves from unwanted sex and to avoid sexually transmitted infections. Having a friend of mine, her boyfriend invited to have sex at their house and without having second thought, they did it. As high school students that were informed about the use and effects of condoms, they tried it. As she told me, nothing happens to her. So after having sex for the first time, the couple repeatedly do what they wanted to themselves. Another situation of my acquaintance, a boy who really longs for sex with her “totally loved girlfriend”. He told me that with his

As student itself, not only the two people are the ones that uses condoms to gratify their self lust body wanting to have the experience that took them a couple of months before deciding to do it. And as they have heard about condoms, they also tried it and do the same. DOH is looking forward for their advocacy to be successful in the next school year. Some of the citizens formed a movement giving free condoms to the people in public places, such as LRT Stations, Malls and other places. Although the proposal is still in the process, people were responsive and mostly, disagrees with this. As student itself, not only the two people are the ones that uses condoms to gratify their self lust. Many students, mostly in high school and colleges levels both made the activities. Having sex is not a joke, only married couples are legitimate to do this. But young people were curious about it. They sees the condom as help to their favorable lust and not giving value to themselves. The proposal will be unsuccessful as I overview the students situation. As a pupil, my schoolmates, especially the lower sections in grades 9 and 10 have committed premarital sex. If the advocacy will be approved, the rate or number of youth’s doing this activity will grow in number.

uring the election, I wrote in this space that Patrick Yagin deserves to be President. It is not because the other candidates have some imperfections because

even Yagin has these flaws. However, what struck me most about him (or her?) is his honest and sincerity. Let me repeat the situation where I developed an instant liking for this kid. It was during our pre-interview the weekend before the campaign and he admitted that he failed some of his grades. When Joshua Cabinas asked him if he can admit that he have some 65s in his Kabuluhan, he said that he did. When he campaigned the following Monday, word soon came out that some teachers are campaigning for him. I asked one, and she said that this is because of his “hon-

Those, I think, are the reasons why he won. I just hope that Arise winners will put him into account. But when I say to put him in account, it means to give him constructive criticism but still cooperate, not to leave him hanging in the dark. The bill also stated that the death penalty shall not be imposed to children below 18 years old nor senior citizens above 70 years old of age at a commision of the crime. Only some drug-related cases are included in the said bill. How come there’s no punishment in other related crimes like rape, and plun-

itors interviewed him a few days back, where he admitted that he will balance being President and playing volleyball. Indeed, a campaign promise broken: He promised no more volleyball next year. However, it is a choice of priorities. But on experience, there’s no free time if you’re President. Especially now when you are trying to connect a broken school from a divisive election, there’s no ‘volleyballing’ around.

homicide and rape on children to be included under death penalty. While the majority caucus in the House agreed to limit the bill on drug-related cases to increase it

(COMP) filed a complaint against Lopez. They'd submitted nine-page complaint to the Office of Ombudsman that contradicts Lopez actions. Last February, if we can remember, Lopez ordered 33 mines shut and five are suspended. She also canceled 75 contracts of mining project. According to COMP, many people lost their jobs. It also damage their mining companies and their reputation. COMP also added that Lopez committed four violations of Republic Act No. 3019, or the "Anti-graft and corrupt practice act" and Republic Act No. 6713, or the

"Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees." Because of releasing the results of an official audit publicaly without the knowings of the mining companies, thereby destroying their reputation and business. As of now, Gina doesn't only faces critics, but also allegations and some filed cases. But how this woman can stand alone? As a woman, I can say that we are stronger than allegations or critics against us. I can stand on my own even though I am helpless. But Gina can't do this with herself. The number one reason is be-

chances of being approved. Plunder and rape were among the heinous crimes removed. Since his campaign, Duterte wants to implement death penalty again to reduced the number of crimes. A wise move for the majority caucus on limiting the bill to drug-related cases only. Now it is approved, can we assure that we are safe among heinous crimes? Can we now breathe easily while walking on streets at night without any threats in our lives? If this bill will guarantee our safety among crooks, then, why not?

Secretary Lopez ordered some mining companies to stop their operations since she was appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte. Because of this, many mining companies question her testimony. Some are checking her background and critics her. But even though they're criticizing her, she keeps standing firm. President Duterte ask CA to let Lopez defend her advocacy. But I know many of you will ask, what are the reasons that keeps the mining companies continue on their operations? The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines

oli Me Tangere was the backmost lesson in Filipino of Grade 9. Ms. Rina E. Caburnay gave a task to Section Rizal to make a movie poster from a tarpaulin , portraying the main characters.

Each group have its own scheme to provide a presentable work. Some used their previous photos, by editing it and others gave an effort time to retake the pictorial. The four groups were able to bring the task on March 7,2017 which was the deadline of submission. Every repre- sentative of the groups presented the work well and Ms. Caburnay delighted as she saw it. Students were given an additional task with the movie posters they made. They needed to put the picture in the facebook wall of their group’s representative and gain many reactions. Each facebook re-

actions has equivalent point. The “WOW” reaction has the highest points, which is 10. The class needed to fulfill many points to get an additional grade to their upcoming unit test. Because of the challenge, mostly of Rizal students were eager to have huge points as they can. They used everything that can be done to encourage their friends and acquaintance. Personally they talked about it. Others used their messenger application to chat them.Everyone got hundreds and hundreds of facebook reactions. The 3rd group got the highest number will the 1st group got the minimum number.

While the collecting the reactions, Rizal were not competing well with their fellow classmates. Because of envious and eagerness to achieve the grade they wanted, hurting others’ feelings or emotions doesn’t bothers them. They would make a person afraid if he/ she will not put a “WOW” reaction with their work. Madness to the individual will be seen. The time when the other group gets higher, they became “bitter”. Those people should be more challenged, not be angry with the opponent. The task were given to mold each one’s ability and character. It is how we communicate with others well,

asking them a favor we needed. Also, it teaches the pupils to stay their feet on the ground even the difficult times came. But the activity was unsuccessful. Others battled right, while some became an unpleasant model to their neighbor. We, Rizal students learned a lot from the past years, but where are the morals, the good character that we had before? I believed that our section can understand more than others, but this time we became just like them. Do envious and wrath were the factors that changed almost all of us ? Where are the beautiful hearts that cares for the sake of everyone?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, Sumulong speaks:

I

would like to share my thoughts about the death penalty issue. I agree and disagree at the same time. I agree, because I think it's just right to punish people if they did something wrong especially when it comes to killing people. Another reason is that I know how it feels when the life of someone you love has been taken by a heartless human. I highly appreciate and really disagree about Death Penalty. Taking someone's life because of their sins is respect their opinions about this inhuman no matter how big of a sin it is. This idea is against the Church because all of us know that even God, the creator save us from death spiritually by sacrific- issue. This is one All of us are sinners, to atone for our sins we repent by praying and going to church for salvation but for some people it is not enough, if you take someone's life of the reason why a huge number of people are in favor with the death you should atone by dying. According to what I've watched, crime is the solution to claim the justice the main source of the problem, it is the reason why we need laws such as Death Penalty. they are seeking for the long period of time. First of all, it's a violation to the 6th command in the 10 commandwho will commit crime? Maybe, there will be, but the chances are too small. Withered Flower By Jamie Manglicmot @GamiKoide1437

arkness, it was all that I could see; the chilly night air didn’t help either. Warmth was radiating from my side; an arm was draped around my waist. The breaths near my ear made me shiver, reminding me of the events that transpired. I shuddered it was akin to a nightmare, no it was a living nightmare. Fresh hot tears cascaded down my cheeks, staining the white sheets. I never asked for any of this, all I wanted was a tutor in Chemistry. It all began on the day before our quarterly exams. Chemistry was my least favorite subject; formulas, memorization, complicated computations, I despised them; they were very stressful. I didn’t want to flunk my Chemistry test; in the end I asked my best friend to tutor me. He agreed on the condition

that I tutor him in Calculus. We stayed after dismissal in our classroom, the building of the 11th graders near the back of the school. It was already past five and dusk was creeping in. “How retarded is your mind when it comes to Chemistry, I’ve been teaching this equation for nearly an hour and you’re not even making any progress.” He stated rather bluntly causing me to blow a fuse. “Just as much as you when it comes to Calculus.” I managed to retort. Then soon enough we started laughing like there was no tomorrow. “You two should head home it’s going to be dark soon” the gentle and kind voice of our veteran guard snapped us out of our laughing fit. We packed our things and soon left. As we approached the school gates he opened the idea of continuing our study session at his house. I agreed, it was my biggest mistake. In the middle of studying a new equation my gaze shifted to him; instead of his gaze being fixated to the equation he was staring at me. It began to give me the creeps that I smacked his head. “Ouch! The hell was that for?” he stated running a hand through his hair. “Pay attention to the equation you dumbass” I scolded. He sighed snaking an arm

I turned to face him, he rubbed his eyes; when he fully regained consciousness he turned several shades of red before throwing his school shirt in my direction and turning around around my waist. “You idiot what do you think you’re doing?” I half shouted. He buried his face in the crook of my neck. I felt his lips tug into a smirk, it gave me chills. “This

joke isn’t funny anymore” I nervously stated. Soon enough I found myself beneath him, he was hovering over me. I turned away but he made me look him in the eye, it was dreadful. His eyes bore a predatory gaze that would make anyone scared out of their mind. He licked his lips and leaned towards my ear whispering the words that made me shiver; “Pleasure comes from pain.” Everything that followed was a blur; all I was able to recall was the chill of the night air and the searing pain I felt each time he did something to me. I shivered, not because of the chilly night air; it was because of everything that happened. And to some extent I hated to admit it but I did feel pleasure from the whole ordeal. I felt disgusted with both him and myself. The boy beside me began to stir instead of throwing a fit I simply averted my eyes towards the window. It was still dark, the clock on his nightstand if I recalled showed that it was four-thirty am. Only more than an hour left before we needed to go to school for our exam. I turned to face him, he rubbed his eyes; when he fully regained consciousness he turned several shades of red before throwing his school shirt in my di-

rection and turning around. I shook my head in annoyance. “I’m done you can look you big idiot” I voiced my annoyance. He opened his mouth to apologize but I raised my hand. “If you’re going to apologize then don’t. What’s done is done; we can’t press the restart button.” “But I did such horrid things to you” I sighed then gave him a nice, good, and hard slap. “Would you please stop? Just stop okay. The past is past. I’m willing to forgive you, my idiotic best friend.” He couldn’t utter a single word after that. We simply fixed ourselves and got ready for school. We acted as if nothing happened. Thankfully, I managed to achieve high marks on my exams. My best friend though still regrets what he did and promised to take full responsibility if something happens to me. In the end even though he had tainted me, marked me as his even; I still forgave him. Call me crazy since I kept it as a secret between us but he was still a person precious to me. He was still my best friend albeit him being the reason why I currently am a withered flower.

Return of EXO in Manila leaves fans in awe On Her Experience Maylin Tabia

F

amous South Korean-Chinese boy band, EXO, went here for their third concert named as Exo Planet #3 – The EXO’rDIUM in Manila last February 25 and 26. It was a two-day concert held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum or mostly known as ‘The Big Dome’ produced by Pulp Live World Production and its very own ‘Inang Reyna’ of the kpop fans, Ms. Happee Sy-Go. Exo is a kpop boy group which consists of nine gorgeous and handsome members named as Kai, Sehun, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Chen, Lay, Xiumin and last but not the least, their leader, Suho. They are popular with their songs entitled “Growl”, “Wolf”, and “Mama”. Although a member didn’t performed and is not present in their Manila show, still, many fans attended their concert. Even popular teen Filipino artists like the son of Piolo Pascual, Inigo Pascual, and an ex-PBB housemate, Jameson Blake. I, myself and together with my friends went also. We experienced their concert and I can say that their show was daebak! (Daebak is the Korean term for the word ‘amazing’.) If you’re still suffering from post-concert depression or unfortunately missed out on their twoday concert, here are some moments from their show that put the “LOVE” in EXO-L or EXO-LOVE. They started off their concert with their debut song “Mama” that made us resound the chant of “Careless, careless, shoot anonymous” from it’s lyrics. They even sang the most favorite opm hit song by Yeng Constantino entitled “Hawak Kamay”

They thanked us, their fans, for attending their concert and we too, the EXO-Ls is thanking them for they have been an inspiration and the source of happiness to us Maylin Tabia Photojournalist at The Lodestar

for the second time. EXO first included Yeng Constantino’s hit in their performances back in 2013 during the Dream Kpop Fantasy Concert and it has been a staple in their visits to the country, including EXO’rDIUM. In their song “Artificial Love” the fans went wild and experienced the ‘sabog ovaries’ feels because of

their choreography which contains of hip thrusts and sexy dance steps. During their performance of “Heaven” on the first day of the show, we, the fans, raised our banners that read “Our Love is Unstoppable”. Group leader Suho quickly noticed it and recalled last year’s fan project where Filipino fans who attended held “We promise forever”

signs in their hands. Exo were amazed to their Filipino fans because for the whole concert, we were singing along with them as though we were performing on stage with them too. “Philippine EXO-Ls are so amazing. You guys are very passionate.” Xiumin said. The EXO also told us that they were smiling in every per-

formance that they did in the whole concert. In the mid-end part of their day1 show, we, the fans were told to stomp our feet and it was like the big dome was shaking because of an earthquake but really, it was from EXO’s excited fans. While the members danced their hearts out to their song entitled “One and Only” on their Day 2 show, another banner was raised and read “Iniirog kita, bes” which means “We love you, friend” in the ancient Filipino script Baybayin. EXO’s leader, Suho, reached out for a banner and the boys later responded the message by reciting the confession of love back to the very much delighted audience and fans. After their charismatic and fascinating performances with the songs “Overdose”, “Transformer”, and “Lightsaber”, vocalist D.O. shared that he was able to try the Filipino dish lechong manok or roasted chicken and he said that he loved it. After mentioning the food “chicken”, Filipino fans began shouting “Jollibee” and led to the members having a discussion of the local fast food chain’s hamburger and chicken. Vocalist Chen said he liked the hamburger while their main dancer and a chicken lover, Kai, chanted “chicken” several times until it was time for them to perform “Do It”, “Drop That”, and “Run”. The boy group ended up EXO’rDIUM in Manila by assuring their fans that they will definitely come back for another show in the future. They thanked us, their fans, for attending their concert and we too, the EXO-Ls is thanking them for they have been an inspiration and the source of happiness to us. EXO delivered their heartfelt slogan “We are one! EXO saranghaja! (EXO let’s love)”- which is how they always end their concerts with their EXOLs who will surely keep these two nights of unstoppable love in their memories forever.

Here are the signs to spot an authentic kpop/kdrama addict: Sign #1- Eye bags is life. Watching kdramas all night like there’s no tomorrow. This usually happens to all of us. Instead of sleeping and getting ready for our classes the next day, we tend to spend all of our time

watching our favorite handsome oppas in their dramas. Every episode we watch has its sling ending that makes us want to watch the next episode until our bodies and minds forget the word “sleep” already. Sign #2- Changing your phone’s, laptop’s etc. wallpaper/lockscreen with your oppa’s photo. This is a very common thing we, the fans, always do. Why do we do this kind of thing? Simply because we have this feeling of happiness and joy or more like ‘kilig’ factor that we feel whenever we open our gadgets and their smiling faces shows up. Sign #3- Spending too much money for your idols. Fans do the east-west, north-south iponing for them to see their idols perform on stage. Their ticket prices are no

joke. It’s prices ranges from 1k-15k. We are not only saving money for their idol’s concerts and fan meetings but also, for them to buy kpop merchandises. Sign #4- Higher standards for men. Fangirls have higher standards than men to the opposite sex because of watching Korean dramas or reading pocketbooks that makes us add and feel butterflies in our stomachs. It makes us dream to have a kind of man that has the star’s character. Sign #5- Using of Korean words. Annyeong! This word is commonly used by Kpop fans and Korean drama addicts. Most Korean fans expresses words such as daebak, jinja, oppa etc. because of the effects given to our brain while seeing our top idols that makes us look crazy but

scientifically, it is just our reaction of being excited. Sign #6- Copying their trends. Nowadays, we, the fangirls imitate our idol’s wardrobe, hairstyles and makeup looks, even their daily skin care routines such as applying skin care products. Fans also does things our idol’s do such as playing their game that has the same rules with our very own “bato-bato pick”. Sign #7- Making kpop covers. Creating youtube channels and posting videos of them dancing or singing their favorite kpop songs. We do our best to memorize their songs’ lyrics and it’s dance steps. That’s what makes us unique, clingy and more busy being a kpop fan. Here are the top seven signs of being a kpop/kdrama addict. Don’t forget to use these signs in spotting

the true authentic fan.

Solace from Reality By Jamie Manglicmot

W

e find solace in the most unexpected places. Sometimes it’s through the ends of our writing instruments; at times through the pages of a book; and most of all, through our wildest dreams. Reality is a cruel monster, taking away our joy when we least expect it. We are the victims of this monster constantly preying on us, driving us to our breaking point. And yet despite that we still find our own things to confine in. One of these are the pens and pencils we used to right with. We are capable of composing small works of literature, some even given the gift to vent through drawing. Our emotions swirl through head and travel onto the paper with each

stroke creating our own work of fiction. It was a way to relieve ourselves of the cruelty we face every single day. Our imagination shows our desires that we will never acquire, so we write and we draw. We express what we see in our wildest dreams that cross the boundaries of reality itself. Then there are books, absorbing us into their mystical world with each turn of a page. There we find a safe haven, where we can see the events in our own mind; perhaps disappear from our own world and enter a new one. From an enchanting world filled with dangers to an arena where people are out to kill you to a magic school filled with mysteries and dangers at every corner, the possibilities are endless. But as you are absorbed in you reading somebody disturbs you sending you back into reality. At those time you’d wish magic was real and cast a hex on your seatmate who brought you back into

the world you quite despise. But of course it is all fantasy, it’s all in your head; and even for a fleeting chance you’d wish it was all real. That that world was the real one and where you currently are is the one created by the imagination of some author. But again reality and fate are absolutely cruel. Finally there are our wildest dreams. The things we want to see, we wish to hear, the actions we desire to perform. It’s all in our heads though; we yen for the things we are unable to acquire. May it be when we are laying down on our beds with our eyes closed or in class gazing out the window; these are what we want to see. These are what we will never achieve when are eyes open to the cruel reality we belong to. Imagine daydreaming in class where you finally had the courage to do something you always wanted to; then the teacher calls your name to answer a problem on the blackboard, effectively snapping you out

of your fantasies. Every time we dream we always wish for it to become a reality. But those dreams are better off left in our heads. It is quite cruel but we have to accept it. A lot of things are happening in our head; some of them could actually become real. Some of these dreams, ambitions to be specific, can be achieved if we work hard enough and believe that we can achieve them. Dreams, books, and our wild imagination are our escape hatch. There we find solace from reality. But that doesn’t mean that we have to ignore reality. It might be cruel, but hey that’s what life is; pain and joy. Now if someone were to ask you what would you chose; real or not real?

Necklace of Rope

Tells a story

Jamie Manglicmot @GamiKoide1437

stare down at my dust coated shoes. Another day has passed again, another day of being bombarded by venomous words. For me it was a repeating cycle; wake up, go to school, receive tons of insults, return to an empty home, sleep. I gripped the necklace I made and slowly entered the school gates. My life was perfect until three years ago. After I graduated from elementary school a tragedy happened. I was doing my homework when I heard a loud crash, a gunshot, and footsteps. A plea echoed through the hallways, it was my mother’s. My breath hitched as I heard another gunshot, a thud following soon after. Knowing it was the only liable option, I jumped out the window. Our home only had a single floor so even if I jump out a window, I’d still live. Even though I received a handful of scratches, I ran. Running, it was all I could do. I sucked in another mouthful of air. I guess my nerves are all over the

place. I ran all the way to the police station. I explained everything I heard; they only stared at me in disbelief. I managed to convince them though. But when they arrived there…it was too late. The criminal was gone, the house was ransacked and in the midst of it all were the corpses of a loving couple. My parents were gone in the blink of an eye. I cried to no end, I was only twelve when it happened; I was only twelve when I lost my parents. Depression, I couldn’t avoid it; I was only a child after all. I was orphaned; I stayed at an orphanage. When I turned thirteen the police explained that it wasn’t a robbery; they made it seem that way but the truth was that they planned to kill off me and my parents to begin with. When I entered high school I was what they’d call the loner girl. I kept my nose buried in books, passed with astounding marks, and aimed to finally achieve the dream I made with my parents. But things change. It began in 8th grade, the bullies, my classmates; all of them treated me like trash. Apparently, they found out about my current state and used it as an advantage. Every morning even if I simply entered the school gates they’d be waiting, their poisoned daggers struck with each word. My desk was covered in words like ‘worthless’, ‘pain in the ass’, and ‘just die already’. It became a daily routine. It went on for more than a year and

I started inflicting self-harm. I knew it was wrong but it bestowed me the knowledge that I was still alive…even though…I was practically dead inside. Those kind smiles I used to receive turned to looks of pity and disgust. Whoever had the guts to spread this really is a monster. All I asked for was everything to go back to the way they were. If only a time machine existed, that luxury is only a fairy tale. It drove me to my breaking point and I was beyond saving. In 9th grade nothing changed but I drove myself to at least complete my last two years in junior high. I finished with high marks but no one was there to congratulate me except for the teachers who supported me. I completed not only with high marks, I was also the valedictorian. The applause I received was

from the staff rather than my batch mates. I laughed bitterly; surely they won’t care if I disappear right? Truthfully if they were given the chance, our salutatorian would be the one in my place. Gradually, we’d have a farewell party right after the ceremony. I slipped back into our classroom where our section would have our own little party. Every event that took place came rushing back to me as I hummed a song I knew all too well. I slipped the necklace I made around my neck and closed my eyes. I heard our salutatorian, the first friend I made call my name. I mumbled a goodbye, a bittersweet smile on my face. I kicked the teacher’s chair away. I heard a scream; it was blinded by my sharp intakes of breath. I gave into my own fate and everything went black.

E

ducation is generally viewed, by most Filipinos, as the means to prosper and the only way to bring a change to one’s life and society. Education is thought as the best thing a young person, can do for himself to ascertain that he leads a better, more rewarding, fulfilling and prosperous life. The truth and meaning of education, though, is hard to define. The term ‘education’ can mean different things to different people. It’s a broad term that people have different ways in which they define education. To have a better grasp of the true meaning of education, let us analyze how different writers magnify the word through stories. The first story is the one written by Paula Ripple, entitled “EDUCATION IS LIKE A CAVE”. In this story, three wise men were asked to find what had been called “the cave of wisdom and life.” They made careful preparations for what would be a challenging and arduous journey. When they reached the place of the cave, they noticed a guard at the entrance. They were not permitted to enter the cave until they had spoken with the guard. He had only one question for them, and he demanded that they answer only after they had talked it over with one another. He assured them that they would have a good guide to lead them through the regions of the cave. His question was a simple

one: “How far into the cave of wisdom and life do you wish to go?” The three travelers took counsel together and then returned to the guard. Their response was, “Oh, not very far. We just want to go far enough into the cave so that we can say that we have been there.” The response of the guard manifested none of his great disappointment as he summoned someone to lead the three wise men a short distance into the cave, and then watched them set out again after a very short time, to make the long journey back to their homeland. In this short story, education is compared to the “cave of wisdom and life” that the three travelers have to explore. It would take a painstaking effort to accomplish the task and it would even first require “a challenging and arduous journey” to get there but the three travelers who endeavor to take the challenge were lukewarm to accomplish what was required of them. Thus, when they were asked “How far into the cave of wisdom and life do you wish to go?, they responded by saying “Oh, not very far. We just want to go far enough into the cave so that we can say that we have been there.” These travelers can be compared to students who would not really succeed in life because the only reason they go to the “cave of wisdom and life” or they acquire education is because they only want to get the feel of being in the cave or being a student but not really having the desire to go deeper into the cave and acquire wisdom in life that could help them succeed. This story is true to many graduate students who failed to have success in life because they can be compared to the three travelers in the story who just wanted to be called students or just wanted to get

a degree but never did take the efforts essential to acquire knowledge from education which would get them to success. Brian Cavanaugh has his own definition of education in his story, “THE STATURE OF TEACHERS”. In this story, during the ancient times, a king decided to find and honor the greatest person among his subjects. A man of wealth and property was singled out. Another was praised for her healing powers, another for his business acumen. Many other successful people were brought to the palace, and it became evident that the task of choosing the greatest from among them would be difficult. Finally, the last candidate stood before the king. It was a woman. Her hair was white. Her eyes shone with the light of knowledge, understanding and love. “Who is this?” asked the king. “What has she done?” “You have seen and heard all the others,” said the king’s aide. “This is their teacher.’” The people applauded and the king came down from his throne to crown and honor her.” In this story the paramount worth of a good teacher is being depicted by the way she was described: “Her hair was white. Her eyes shone with the light of knowledge, understanding and love.” and the evidence of her virtues is among the successful people whom she all taught. This short story also portrays the importance of education to our lives. Only when we acquire education can we eventually find success in life just like those successful people who were invited by the king. It is only through education that we can create a community or a nation of people who can be active agents in pushing a nation’s social, economical and political development.

The amount of education of a man will gauge his success in life but people never realize the value of education in their lives until after they have met the sad consequence of not having much of it just like the horsemen in the story who “were both glad and sorry – glad that they had taken some, and sorry that they had not taken more.

Dr. Adolfson gave his definition of education in “THE STORY OF EDUCATION”. The story is about three horsemen who were riding across a desert one night. As they crossed the dry bed of a river, out of the darkness, a voice called, “Halt!” They obeyed. The voice then told them to dismount, pick up a handful of pebbles, put them in their pockets and remount. The voice then said, “You have done as I commanded. Tomorrow at sun-up you will be both glad and sorry.” Mystified, the horsemen rode on.

When the sun rose, they reached into their pockets and found that a miracle had happened. The pebbles had been transformed into diamonds, rubies, and other precious stones. They remembered the warning. They were both glad and sorry – glad that they had taken some, and sorry that they had not taken more. That is the story of education. The amount of education of a man will gauge his success in life but people never realize the value of education in their lives until after they have met the sad consequence of not having much of it just like the horsemen in the story who “were both glad and sorry – glad that they had taken some, and sorry that they had not taken more. The pebbles which transformed into diamonds, rubies and other precious stones in story represent the worth of knowledge we gain from education. This knowledge is a treasure that can’t be taken away or stolen from us because they become intact in our character and in our being and it becomes our passport to our dreams and our ambitions in life. The attitude that the horsemen displayed in the story can be compared to the attitude of some students, who, as they go through the process of attaining education, use their power of choices whether to get more or just get less of it. The transformation of the pebbles into precious gems is symmetrical with the outcome of the efforts people use as they get themselves education. To illustrate the truth of this thing, we see some people around us who came from rugs to riches because of the effort they exerted in gaining knowledge and they are those who do not feel sorry but glad because they have taken as many as they could.

Rubik's Cube Makes our Eyes Good Research by

Micah Soliman @SolimanMicah

M

ost of us are familiar with this cube tha has different colors. Colors that attracts our eyes when we try to solve it. In forming rubrik's cube, there are two commonways to measure the length of a solution to Rubik's Cube. The first one is to count the number of quarter turns. The second one is to count the number of outer-layer twists, called "face turns". A move to turn an outer layer two quarter (90°) turns in the same direction would be counted as two

moves in the quarter turn metric (QTM), but as one turn in the face metric(FTM or HTM "Half Turn Metric", or "OBTM" Outer Block Turn Metric"). Did you know that the maximum number of face turns needed to solve any instance of the Rubik's Cube is 20? And the maximum number of quarter turns is 26. Well, these numbers are also the diameters of the corresponding Cayley Graphs of the Rubik's Cubes. An algorithm that solves a cube in the minimum number of moves is known as God's algorithm. In denoting a sequence of moves on the 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube, this article uses "Singmaster notation", which WS developed by David Singmaster. The letters L,R,F,B,U and D indicates clockwise quarter turn of the left, front, back,up and down face respectively. Let's start with the lower bounds.

It can be proven by counting the rows that there exist positions needing at least 18 moves to solve. To present this,

first you should count the number of cube positions that be in total, then count the number of positions achievable using at most 17 moves. On the upper bounds, the first upper bounds were based on the 'human' algorithms. By combining the worst-case for each part, the typical upper bound was found around 100. vBy the way, there were 3 algorithms namely: Thistlethwaite's algorithm, Kociemba's algorithms and Korf's algorithm where we will

know how will we form or solve the Rubic's Cube. The breakthrough, known as "descent through nested subgroups" was found by Morwen Thistlethwaite. His idea was to divide the problem into subproblems. He said that where algorithms up to that point divided the problem by looking at the parts of the cube. Thistlethwaite's algorithms was improved by HerbertKKociemba in 1992. As with Thistlethwaite's Algorithm, he would search through the right coset space to take the cube to group. Then he also searched tge optimal solution for group. Using this algorithm solutions are typically found of fewer than 21 moves,

Feliks Zemdegs on solving a 3x3 Rubik's Cube under 10 secs

though there is no proof that it will always do. Using these group solutions combines with computer searches will generally quickly give very short solutions. Richard Korf used: •The cube restricted to only the corners, not looking at the edges. •The cube restricted to only 6 edges not looking at the corners nor at the other edges. •The cube restricted to the other 6 edges. Although this algorithm will always find optimal solutions, there is no worst case analysis. It is not known how many moves this algorithm might need. An implementation of this algorithm can be found here.

Math Perspective Affects Math Performance “Bad feelings about math beget bad grades — which beget more bad feelings” Research by

Jonalie De Guzman @SolimanMicah

B

ased on my experience as a student, when you have a bad feelings or bad perspective about any subject it will have a bad feedback to your grade. I do believe that as a student we should learn to love every subject and every lesson, because there is no difficult subject if you are eager to learn. For example, mathematics is commonly identified as one of the most diffi-

cult subjects encountered by pupils in schools and adults alike. I have witnessed the frustration of individuals whom struggle with these simple calculations in the school environment. Individuals become disenchanted with mathematics and often question the relevance of the amount of time spent in teaching the subject. If the outlook of mathematics homework makes you feel hopeless, it may be badness news for your final form. On the other hand, a few good score could foster a positive attitude — which could result in better degree down the line, a new survey shows. The finding suggests that fostering a positive, can-do at-

titude about math can help educate students master the subject. Reinhard Pekrun is a psychologist — someone who studies how the great unwashed behave — at the University of Munich in High Germany. He and his confrere followed 3,425 German scholarly people from fifth through ninth grades. At the end of each year, the researchers surveyed the students on math. They asked whether they enjoyed it — or if it angered or worried them. Students also were asked whether they took pride in their math accomplishment or felt ashamed. The scientist then compared the students’ reported feelings about math to their grades.

And, it twist out, those feelings were linked with their math grades. The reverse also was true: How kids’ tactile properties about the subject in one year were linked to their math grades the next. Those who had gotten poor grades felt badly about math. And those who had dark emotions performed poorly. Achievement has a positive influence on emotions. Good feelings about math — taking pride in math achievement and enjoying math stratum — also led to better grades, and more pride and incontrovertibility , too. Precept math isn’t just about numbers and formulas, Pekrun says. How scholar smell about those

numbers — whether they approach them with curiosity or dread — also matters.. “Grading on a curve” — or congener to a student’s schoolfellow — can perpetuate a cycle of poor achievements, he argues. Why? This approach will always describe the few best performers as successful and the lowest winner as failures — even if they had done relatively well. In addition, it service if teacher themselves have positive degree feelings about math, Pekrun says. “If teachers enjoy pedagogy and really are enthusiastic, this is contagious,” he explains. “If the teacher herself appears bored, then the children are bored.”

e all knew that, Nokia 3310 was already released with new and has high qualities. The old Nokia 3310 has no high qualities like this new one today. Nokia was used to be the one of the world's biggest mobile phone manufacturers but it fell behind with the advent of IPhone and other android smart phones. The new Nokia 3310 was one of the most exciting phones to debut at the Mobile World's Congress Trade show last month. Do you want to know more about the new Nokia 3310? Well, here's the things that you've never yet knew about it: •126 million units of the original Nokia 3310 have been sold worldwide by making it one of the most popular phones ever! •Nokia 3310 was first announced in September 2000 and was released later that year- it cost, a rather hefty, £129.99 on a pay-as-yougo deal. •The phone featured a 900 mAh which had an official standby time of 260 hours- that's 10 days without needing a charge. •Nokia 3310 has the Famous Snake game that wasn't first seen on Nokia phone user. The very first snake-type adventure was actually an arcade games called blockade which was created back in 1976. •Although the original 3310 was expensive, its expected the new 3310 will go on sale for a much

more affordable price of £49. •Unlike other phones, the original Nokia 3310 had 35 ringtones built-in with space for seven custom tones. These could either be

e as a whole know the inclination. You're strolling not far off one game changing day, when your foot makes a shaky stride and you feel your whole body swaying in reverse. You crash and burn on the ground in a folded pile and everybody around you stops and gazes. Your face warms up and you can't look at anybody without flinching. You're humiliated… clearly. Your cheeks are turning red and you simply need to get the damnation out of there, or possibly simply sink into the ground and vanish. That surge of blood to your face that warms up your cheeks, all the more usually known as becoming flushed, is a typical and splendidly ordinary thing. It happens to everybody, regardless of whether we understand it or not, especially

when we encounter a humiliating circumstance. The question is, in this manner, what's happening inside us that makes our cheeks turn red? Maybe more critically, why do we display this strange thing? Humiliation likewise triggers the battle or-flight reaction, and the subsequent activity of adrenaline causes veins to increment in width (vasodilation), alongside an expanded blood supply to our facial skin. In a few people, even their necks, ears and upper trunk blush when they begin to redden. You may likewise need to keep an ice pack convenient in case you're inclined to shame, as becoming flushed can now and then make your face feel hot. Besides, vasodilation serves to broaden veins in the cheek much more, since they are as of now more extensive than most other veins and furthermore happen to be closer the surface of our skin. Becoming flushed is honestly entirely interesting, and even Charles Darwin concurs; he called reddening "the most curious and most human of all expressions."

Reddening, for goodness' sake, is one range that science hasn't possessed the capacity to totally clarify. The uplifting news, however, is that there are some phenomenal speculations out there regarding why we become flushed. Reddening is brought on by humiliation, so it can fill in as a vital flag to other individuals about the way we feel about a specific circumstance. This can be an intense non-verbal prompt, and really charms us to other individuals, as it demonstrates that we're mindful and comprehend the points of interest of a circumstance.. Keep in mind, brutality or antagonistic vibe can eject over the most modest of affront, so on the off chance that you wind up in a circumstance where you've unwittingly disturbed somebody, your red face may very well spare you from getting a bruised eye. You presumably don't think about a flushed face as your first line of resistance, however whenever that warmth ascends in your cheeks, possibly you ought to tally yourself fortunate!

Motherhood Changes the Brain Research by

Shemah Eliza Lim

P @elizalims

regnancy and parenthood can reshape mother's brain. Those changes might be a good thing, some research suggests. As mom-to-be's midsection balloons, areas of her cerebral cortex wither, scientists reported online December 19 on Nature Neuroscience. A smaller brain can be more efficient and specialized. Post-pregnancy brains could be considered evolutionary works of art, perfectly sculpted to better respond to their babies. Researchers found that the brain regions most changed during pregnancy are the one that fire up when mothers see picture of their

babies. Pregnancy (and possibly child birth) may make these neural networks sleeker and stronger, helping moms to tune in their infants. Motherhood may actually make the brain stronger. In a maze test, first-time rat mothers that were no longer nursing their babies actually outperformed rats that had never given birth. And rats that had been pregnant multiple times outperformed non-mother rats on a different memory test, says neuroscientist Liisa Galea of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. What's more, motherhood may help keep the brain young. When tested at the ripe old age of 24 months, rats that had given birth earlier in life performed better on tests of learning of memory that rats that has not given birth. Those results suggest that something about motherhood -perhaps the stew of hormones and the brain changes that follow -may actually protect the brain as it ages. "Pregnancy and mother are dramatic life-changing events that can

have long-lasting repercussions in the brain," she says and it's quite likely that some of it might be good. The changes seem to begin the moment the baby is born. In a 2010 study, researchers looked at brainscan images of 19 women before and after they gave birth and found that the size of mother's brains increased shortly after childbirth. "We observed small but significant increases in the volume of gray matter in the brain," said study co-author Pilyoung Kim, a developmental psyschologist who performed the research at Yale University. Kim and colleagues also found that moms who gushed over their babies a month after childbirth showed the greatest growth in parts of the brain, compared with moms who didn't respond as enthusiastically. The period directly after childbirth is an important time for new moms. According to the researchers, moms develop sensitive mothering skills during this time, and changes to the brain may be linked

with how these skills develop. The researchers observed increases in gray matter in brain areas such as hypothalamus, amygdale, parietal lobe and prefrontal cortex. These regions are responsible for emotion, reasoning and judgement, the senses and reward behavior. Compared with the less- enthusiastic moms, the awestruck moms were more likely develop bigger mid-brains, and saw growth in key regions linked to maternal motivation, rewards and the regulation of emotions, Kim's team found. The researchers said this expansion in the brain's "motivation" area might lead to more nurturing, which in turn could help babies thrive. Still, "we don't know whether it's the experience that changes the brain, or the brain that changes the experience," said Kim, who is now with the National Institute of Mental Health. While it remains unclear exactly why the brain grows, the researchers said it might be that an increase in hormones -including estrogen, oxytocin, and prolactin -play a role.

Climate Change alters Reindeer's territory World's largest reindeer population may fall victim to climate change.

Research by

Shemah Eliza Lim @elizalims

W

hether you call them caribou or reindeer, Rangifer tarandus around the world are on the decline. There are about 2.5 million of these animals scattered in more than 20 populations across the Arctic, and most of those populations are shrinking. And scientists largely don’t know why. Count the world's largest population of reindeer, occupying the Taimyr Peninsula of Russia, among those that are disappearing. In 2000, there were around a million of the animals, a high after the fall of the Soviet Union and years of Soviet-sponsored hunting finally

ended. Now there are only 600,000 according to Andrey Petrov, of the University of Iowa's Arctic Center. This huge herd of wild reindeer "crashed and is going dowm," Petrov said December 12 at a press conference at the American Geophysical Union's Fall Meeting in San Francisco. Petrov thinks that he's found the culprits behind the decline. - a combination of the obvious and unexpected. Climate change is altering the reindeer's story. Temperatures have risen by about 1.5 degrees celcius on average. Spring now arrives sooner, resulting in rivers unfreezing earlier in this year. The reindeer now have to swim across ice, Detrov noted. Since 2000, the reindeer's summer grounds have moved a bit to the east and north, meaning that the animal migration route is now longer. Mosquitos have also become a problem, and wildfires have increased in frequency. Humans aren't giving the reindeer much of a break either. Migration routes have been blocked by infrastructure, and pollution has become a problem.

The Taimyr reindeer have been well-studied for decades. Airborne surveys monitored t h e m

f r o m 19692009. Scientists attached collars to some animals to track where they traveled. R e searchers knew that the reindeer spent their summers in calving grounds in the north and migrated south to spend the winter in a bit more hospitable territory. They say that the animals, which live in Taimyr Peninsula in the nethermost tip of Russia, are being affected by rising temperatures and human activity. This is causing the animals to change their annual migration patterns.

The research has been presented at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). "There is a substantial decline -and we are also seeing this with other wild reindeer declining rapidly in others parts of the world," said Andrey Petrov, who runs the Arctic Centre at the University of Northern Iowa, US. He added that rivers in the region were also growing in size, making them more dangerous for the animals as they had to swim rather than walk across them. In addition, food in the summer grounds is becoming scarce especially as the animals move to higher elevations. "Reindeer are tremendously important for biodiversity -they are a part of the Arctic food chain and without them others species would be in trouble," he explained. "But on the other hand, in all the areas they inhabit, they are vital for people's survival. "Thousands and thousands of people rely on wild reindeer; it is the basis of their subsistence econ-

omy. So it’s about human sustainability too." Loss of reindeer populations could actually exacerbate climate change. Researches in Finland have found that grazing by reindeer can help prevent solar heart absorption which can lead to climate change. In their study, they found that areas where reindeer did not graze had higher levels of heat radiation, thanks to higher levels of shrubs and trees that absorbed heat. A Swedish study has found that reindeer can also prevent the climatechange-caused spread of invasive species in the Arctic Tundra. Reindeer are not only Arctic species whose populations are being threatened by climate change. Earlier this fall, around 35,000 walruses were stranded on an Alaskan beach, an increasingly common occurrence due to the lack of sea ice, and which can lead to the trampling of cubs. Melting ice has also been linked to deaths of baby harp seals. It has negatively impacted the rare western glacier stonefly, Peregrine falcon chicks and, of course, polar bears.

Climate change and plant nutrients Research by

Micah Soliman

D @SolimanMicah

id you know that climate change could shrink the mineral and protein content of wheat, rice and other staple crops, mounting evidence suggests? A dinner plate piled with food from plants may not deliver the same nutrition toward the end of this century as it does today. Elements like, selenium is essential for human health, and already fall short in diets of one of seven people in the world. Zinc and iron

deficiencies could grow as micronutrients decrease in major crops worldwide. Expecting those unintended importance isn’t easy. It’s unclear of what proportions erode out of rocks or drifts onto land from sea, says bio geochemist Lenny Winkel of ETH Zurich and the Swiss aquatic research group Eawag in Dubendorf. Starting with more than 33,000 data points from other sources, Winkel and colleagues pieced together a map of Selenium concentrations in soils across much of the earth. In Selenial Slump, soil concentrations of the element selenium, essential for human life, could change by the end of the 21st century, according to computer counterfeit based on an intermediate scenario for climate change. By the end of the century, about

two-thirds of heavily cultivated agricultural land would probably lose selenium under an intermediate scenario of climate change. For the nutrient drop, multiple varieties of major crops showed some nutrient changes when grown outdoors with extra carbon dioxide blown over them (ranging 546 to 586 ppm) in seven spots scattered across Australia, Japan and United States. What do you think is/are the significance of these? The trace element selenium is essential for human health and is required in a narrow dietary concentration range. Furthermore, using moderate climate change projections there were loses from 58% of modeled areas (mean loss 8.4%) Shortage of micronutrients, including essential trace elements, affect up to 3 billion people worldwide. The dietary availability of

trace elements is determined largely by their soil concentrations. The importance of climate – soil interactions to 2Se distributions suggests that other trace elements with similar retention mechanism can be similarly affected by Climate change. Changes in climate affect animals both directly and indirectly. Drought may threaten pasture and feed supplies. Shortage reduces the amount of quality forage available to grazing livestock. Some climate-related disturbance to food distribution and transport, internationally or domestically, may have significant impacts snot only on safety and quality but may also on food access. Impacts to the global food supply concern the United States because lack of foods can cause humanitarian arises and on national security concerns.

When going through a quick and livid movement of selections, even the temporary distraction of nothing an error can lower accuracy at the subsequent selection, researchers record within the March 15 Magazine of Neuroscience. “Now we have a mind area that display and says ‘ you tousled’ in order that we will right kind our habits,” says psychologist George Buzzell, now on the College of Maryland in Faculty Park. However occasionally, that tracking machine can backfire, distracting us from the duty to hand and inflicting us to make some other error. To check other folk’s reaction to creating errors, Buzzell and associates at George Mason College in Fairfax, Va., monitored 23 contributor’s mind job whilst they labored thru a difficult job. Concentric circles flashed in brief on a display,

and contributors needed to reply with one hand if the two circles have been the similar color and the opposite hand if the circles have been subtly other sun shades. After creating a mistake, contributors most often spoke back the following query appropriately if that they had a 2nd or so that you could get well. But if the following problem got here in no time after an error, as low as zero. 2 seconds, accuracy dropped through about 10%. Electric job recorded from the visible cortex confirmed that contributors paid much less consideration to the following trial if that they had simply made a mistake than if that they had answers appropriately. The cognitive call for of nothing and processing the mistake turns out to divert consideration that when there’s not much time to recover, one error can lead to another.

ur brain can ‘pause’ when we simply make a mistake. When facing a fast and furious stream of decisions, even the momentary distraction of nothing an error can decrease accuracy on the next choice, researchers report in the March 15 Journal of Neuroscience. “We have a brain region that monitor says ‘ you messed up’ so

that we can control our behavior” says psychologist George Buzzell, now at the University of Maryland in College Park. But sometimes, that monitoring system can backfire, distracting us from the task at hand and causing us to make another error. To test people’s response to making mistakes, Buzzell and colleagues at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., monitored 23 participants’ brain activity while they worked through a challenging task. Concentric circles flashed briefly on a screen, and participants had to respond with one hand is the two circles were the same color and the other hand if the circles were subtly different shades. After making a mistake, participants generally answered the next question correctly if they had a second or so to recover. But when the next challenge came very quickly after an error, as little as 0.2 sec-

onds, accuracy dropped by about 10 percent. Electrical activity recorded from the visual cortex showed that participants paid less attention to the next trial if they had just made a mistake than if they had responded correctly. DOMINO EFFECT when people have to make many decisions very quickly, making one mistake can decrease accuracy on the next choice too. In real life, people usually have time – even if just a few seconds – reflect on a mistake before having to make another decisions, says Jan Wessel, a psychologist at the University of lowa in Lowa City. But in some activities such as driving a car or playing a musical instrument, people must rebound from errors quickly while continuing to correctly carry out the rest of the task, he says. Those actions might push the limits of error processing. Errors can also be studying alter-

Immediately, Sol Mercado impresively did a circus lay-up to show his team that the game wasn’t finished and then had a 2 pt played by Joe Devance’s with the help of Scottie Thompson to make a 4 point game and reach the score 56-52. Devance earned nearly 14 pts in just the 3rd Quarter. “Joe’s an inspiration to us. tar Hotshots showed their determination to win against scorching and burning BRGY. GINEBRA team of San Miguel. Star defeated Gins in their Game 6 by a score of 89-80 at the Mall of Asia Arena. Hotshots became hot because of their two consecutive loses. In the first quarter of the game, it was quite difficult for Star to defend Gins and their center player, Japeth Aguilar who made Barangay take the lead at the end of the quarter, 21-22. On entering the 2nd Quarter, the fight between Mark Barroca and Ginebra's Rookie, Scottie Thompson heats up. But apparently, Star got lucky in this quarter and took their first lead of the game with 4 by a score of 49-45. Outrageously Star as they are playing in the 3rd Quarter of the took their lead at nearly 16 points which makes Ginebra fans disappointed. However, Paul Lee shows

his inner game by contributing to the team with 10 pts. and also with the help of Maliksi who contributed 10 pts. also with 4 ast. in the game. "My players refused to lose. We gathered together, we stayed together, we stayed positive. We commit to each other to focus on this game, no distraction" Hotshots coach said, Coach Chito Victolero. Star Hotshots got nervous in the last quarter of the game because most of their shots were missing and in addition, they'd committed turnovers. Despite of this, Star maintain their confidence due to their great advantage, and they also got lucky because of Ginebra's consequences. In spite of this, Ginebra San Miguel still shows their NEVER SAY DIE game through their Fast and the Furious tandem of Mark Caguioa and Jajay Helterbrand who made a back to back 3-point shots that caused Star to diminished their advantage in the remaining 2 mins. and 18 secs. in the game. "We will expect the unexpected combinations. And I really do not know how coach Tim will think (the next game). I just know he's great," Coach Victolero said. In the near end, Star Hotshots

I believe that there are only three main key to win this game and it is as follows: First and foremost is the DEFENSE, we can only be more San Miguel defense also because of their 6'10 "center player Fajardo but if we look at are also able to TNT's monstrous defensive work together

if Junemar Tropang Texter players were Ranidel De Ocampo (RDO), Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and the center that was Tauttua Moala. And the third is the ultimate ELEMENT OF SURPRISE, prominent coaches were robust Nash Racela Coach and Coach Leo Austria. The coach of the San Miguel Beermen Coach Austria has plenty of proven and winning stint in the field of coaching in basketaball compared to younger coach Talk 'N Text coach Racela but no one knows what he can do and prove as a coach , and this is one of the forward TNT fans.
