The doors of her big old wardrobe were thrown open invitingly. She peered in to see her favourite rabbit headdress hanging alone at the back.

Ona lifted herself up and into the wardrobe, reached over for her mask and pulled it onto her head.

“You’re late. You’re late. We must hurry.” A handsome white rabbit was standing over her tut-tutting.

“But where am I?” she gasped.

< 4,3 >

“Why, we’re in the woods! We must make haste to the fancy dress party,” said the rabbit and

off.

Suddenly she found herself in the midst of a deep forest. The wide branches reached out to each other and cast long shadows.

She could make out a path, or maybe two, winding through the trees for as far as the eye could see.

The snap of a twig ahead made her jump and there, leaning against a tree trunk, was a fine looking gentlemen with a camera round his neck. On further inspection, she noticed that he had unusually large ears.

“You know, my dear, it isn’t safe for a little girl to walk through these woods alone. The paths are twisted and the way unclear,” said the wolf. “Let me accompany you along the way.”

< 4,8 >

The rabbit, the girl and the wolf set off together.

< 4,9 >

Soon they came to a bridge, alive with the chatter of the babbling brook beneath it. The birds chirruped above as they trip-trapped across to the other side.

< 4,10 >

Just up ahead was a small clearing and in it a family of creatures standing around a picnic. “Excuse me, but do you know the way to the fancy dress party?” she whispered. “Oh we’re coming too,” they cried in unison and wiping their mouths on their clothes they gathered up their things. On they marched, the little girl, the rabbit, the wolf and the three bears.

“Off to the cat walk I suppose,” said a soft sleek voice coming from the shadows. Out of the bushes swaggered a tall cat in fine clothes.

“Follow the cat,” he smirked.

< 4,13 >

Up ahead she thought she could see flags hanging from the branches of the trees. The merry gang sped up as they heard excited voices and music ahead.

< 4,15 >

What a sight they met!

There were owls and badgers and animals of all kinds dressed in fabulous, funky garments.

< 4,16 >

Ona ran over to a trunk that was spilling over with mad hats and fancy dress outfits.

< 4,18 >

A dashing deer dressed in layers of tulle and linen sauntered on to the stage and struck a pose.

Suddenly she felt soft wool beneath her knees as she tumbled out of the cupboard. She lay there for a moment, still spinning from her woodland adventures.

< 5 >

In the distance she could hear her mother’s voice calling her.

< 6 >

“Darling, are you ready for bed yet?”

< 7 >

“Come on my dear. Let’s pop your pyjamas on then I’ll read you a story.” Ona followed her mum through the hallway, glancing at the familiar pictures hanging on the walls.

She nestled into her mum’s lap and her brother Roc sat crossed legged at her side, as always. “Are you sitting comfortably? Then I shall begin.
