LOOKING BACK ON 30 YEARS OF LAUGHTER.... 1981 Aspiring actor/full-time waiter Gerard Alessandrini assembles an evening of show parodies he has scribbled on the backs of paper placemats between delivering cappuccinos. The two-nightonly performance is a sensation, and the engagement is extended. The show opens to rave reviews in January, 1982 2006 Broadway legend Angela Lansbury presents Alessandrini and Forbidden Broadway with a Special Tony® Award for Excellence in the Theatre for “25 years of insuring our sense of humor about the Broadway theatre world.” 2012 - 2014 The show’s sparkling new edition: Forbidden Broadway: Alive and Kicking takes the town by storm once more, winning unanimous raves, and making the year’s “Top 10 Lists” in Time Magazine and the Associated Press. The show received a 2013 Drama Desk Nomination for Best Musical Revue. What started as a small cabaret act at West 72nd Street’s Palsson’s Supper Club, is now one of New York City’s best-loved and most highly-anticipated musicals. Celebrating its 30th year, Forbidden Broadway is a Broadway institution joining the ranks of A Chorus Line and Phantom of the Opera as one of the longest-running shows in New York history. Forbidden Broadway was born in 1982, when Alessandrini, a frustrated performer looking for a place to showcase himself and his friends, booked a weekend performance at Palsson’s. The cast, which included Nora Mae Lyng and Chloe Webb, had no producer or backer, and used costumes from the cast’s own closets to spoof stars like Yul Brynner and Ethel Merman. Hailed by critics, Forbidden Broadway became an overnight sensation, quickly expanding to eight performances a week and running at Palsson’s for over six years. Needing a bigger venue, Forbidden Broadway moved to the 125-seat Theatre East, where it ran until 1994. Since then, Forbidden Broadway was presented at the Triad until 1997, the Stardust Theatre from 19972001, the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre from 2001-2005, and the 47th Street Theatre, where it has run since 2005. Forbidden Broadway has also enjoyed both national and international success, performing over 10,000 shows on four continents with sit-down engagements in over 20 U.S. cities, as well as concerts with major symphony orchestras. Over the last 30 years, the show, which changes as often as Broadway, has teased, mocked and prodded Broadway classics from My Fair Lady to Gypsy to The Lion King. Some of its legendary “victims” have included Carol Burnett, Carol Channing, Glenn Close, Patti Lupone, Ethel Merman, Mike Nichols, Bernadette Peters and Andrew Lloyd Webber, all of whom have joined the packed houses to laugh and applaud. The show has also been known to launch several talented, but previously unknown actors’ careers, including “Seinfeld” star Jason Alexander, “Mad Men’s” Bryan Batt, “Glee’s” Brad Ellis; Chloe Webb, Dee Hoty and Daniel Reichard, while many Forbidden Broadway alumni have appeared or are currently appearing on Broadway. Forbidden Broadway recently received a Special Tony® Award as well as the Obie, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards. As any theatre lover will tell you, “You haven’t arrived until you’ve been roasted in Forbidden Broadway.”
