Editor's Note

TIME FLIES! This year, LittleGuide is turning 7 years old - and with our oldest of kids turning 8! LittleGuide Detroit started as a question by new moms of ‘what to do with our littles?’, now we’re entering the ‘what to do with our school age kids?’ territory. How do we fit in school, homework, sports, birthday parties, and family time? It’s a lot, but we hope LittleGuide can be a useful resource to make finding fun easier (even if finding the time for it is sometimes a challenge). We’re on this ride together and happy to be sharing it with you. As we enter a new year and uncharted territory, we hope this issue of the Winter Magazine will help you do more, find more, and enjoy these winter months MORE!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! KERRY DOMAN & CARRIE BUDZINSKI P.S. Catch up with US on the last Thursday of each month at 10am for our LittleGuide LIVE series!

SPEND TIME

OUTSIDE #1000HoursOutside #52WeekTrailChallege #HikeItOut There are a lot of popular themed inspirations to keep moving and motivated in the winter months. We’re here for it all, but we also know that sometimes a single win is a win. So whether you’re tackling a challenge or combating cabin fever, here are some ways to keep active this winter.

Kensington Nature Center (Milford)

NATURE CENTERS & TRAILS Bundle up and breath in the fresh air on a nature trail hike the whole family will love. Find other waterfront walks while visiting the Ford House (Lake St. Clair), Lake Erie Metropark (Lake Erie), Kensington Nature Center (Kent Lake) or Crosswinds Marsh (New Boston). Visiting a local nature center offers the best of both worlds - you can spend time outside in the crisp air, then head indoors to warm up. Heritage Park Nature Center (Farmington Hills), Stage Nature Center (Troy) and Belle Isle Nature Center (Detroit) have the added bonus of also being FREE! If you simply want to channel your inner Elsa and get lost in the woods - head to Leslie Science & Nature Center (Ann Arbor) or Dinosaur Hill Nature Preserve (Rochester)

Hit The Road Grab the keys for a new (but not so far) road trip adventure. The Ribbon at Glass City Metropark (Toledo, OH), is a 1,000 foot loop trail featuring rolling hills and soft curves for a unique outdoor skating experience. The Ribbon is connected to a 5,000 square foot skating pond that offers a traditional ice rink experience for beginners. The Hidden Lake Gardens Sky Canopy Walk (Tipton) stands 65 feet above ground level at its highest point, showcasing the peaceful forest below all winter long.

Libraries are always a win with our families and lucky for us, we have some incredible ones in metro Detroit full of FREE family fun. There’s so much to do at your local library (and it’s so much more than ‘just reading books’). Yes, you can explore this world and others in board books and chapter books (in hard print, audio and digital), but that’s just the start. Let the kids play with toys in the Children’s Department (keep reading to find our favorites locations to play), attend regular story time sessions, or check the calendar for drop-in events.

Most libraries host special guests, crafting and game nights, and traveling programs that can all be enjoyed for FREE. You’ll also find video games, boardgames, toys and more at the increasingly popular ‘Library of Things’ sections. Use your library card for FREE or discounted admission to local attractions thru the Michigan Activity Pass. Find more details about that awesome program here.

6 AUTHOR’S OUR KIDS LOVE March is National Reading Month - and whether it’s bedtime, weekly homework, or the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge, reading is always a good idea. If you want to expand your reading list, here are authors that our kids love.

We love the fast-paced rhyme books that share stories of the students (and teacher) of Blue River Creek’s 2nd grade classroom. Andrea Beaty’s picture book series is so popular, with chapter books now too.

You probably already have Sandra Boynton in your book collection, but if you don’t, her jazzy board books are so fun your kids will enjoy them for years to come.

Dave Pilkey may have been your favorite author as a kid (Captain Underpants remains as popular as ever), but his newer Dog Man series and Cat Kid also top this generation’s favorite lists.

Parents will relate, as kids delight in the stories of the Interrupting Chicken (it’s a series on AppleTV too). David Ezra Stein’s book series is darling, and he has other picture books to check out as well.

8

We’ll always have fond memories of Mo Willems hosting virtual drawing workshops during quarantine. It helped during a hard time and made the stories of Gerald, Piggy and Pigeon more memorable at bedtime.

Suzanne Lang’s Grumpy Monkey series is growing in popularity and our kids love to hear about (and can relate to) Jim Panzee’s big feelings. Lang also has other relatable books about different kinds of families and kids.

Hit The Slopes Getting your kids into skiing and snowboarding can be a daunting task – even for parents who enjoy the sports themselves. That’s why we’ve put together a list of the top tips to help you get started. Stay Safe: Helmets are a must when skiing or riding, so we go with a bright color that helps us spot our kids out on the slopes. Kid’s Goggles help to protect your littles’ eyes. They also help with visibility – it’s bright out there on the white snow! Wrist guards are a great idea for anyone learning to snowboard as well. Stay Warm: We like to say – “There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing”. Make sure your kids have over the calf socks, thermal underwear, an insulated jacket, ski mask, and hand warmers to keep them focused on the sport and not the temps. Make Things Easy: When teaching your kids to ski, having some way to help control their speed (and lift them off the ground when they fall) is helpful, consider getting a harness and ropes.

Local Ski Resorts Pine Knob (Clarkston) Pine Knob offers a 300ft vertical with 17 runs, 3 terrain parks, 2 world-famous Wonder Carpets (100ft and 300ft), 6 chairlifts, and 4 tow ropes.

Alpine Valley (White Lake) Alpine Valley offers 25 picturesque treelined slopes with three different style terrains. A great place for beginners, there are 2 rope tows and 2 magic carpets.

Mt. Brighton (Brighton) Mt. Brighton is one of the highest points of elevation in Livingston County and riders can easily access 25 trails and five lifts covering 130 acres.

Mt. Holly (Holly) Find everything you need, 7 chairlifts (including Southeastern Michigan’s only High-Speed detachable quad), 4 rope tows, and two SunKid Wonder Carpets.

The term “dress for success” has a whole different meaning as a parent. Keeping your kids warm and happy in the winter weather helps everyone enjoy outdoor time.

Best Places To Make Maple Sugar Get ready for some 'Pure Michigan' fun, as you learn how to tap and make pure maple syrup (and even taste test some too) in the final weeks of February through March. Pancake breakfasts are the best - and learning where your syrup comes from is a bonus. This end of winter activity is the perfect way to send off the season and spend time outside. There are several places that offer maple sugaring events and activities - Maplefest at MSU Tollgate Farm is a popular one weekend event. Here are a few locations that offer weekly events in the area:

1

HURON-CLINTON METROPARK

Kensington (Milford), Wolcott Mill (Roy), Hudson Mills (Dexter), Stony Creek (Shelby Township) and Oakwoods (New Boston) Metroparks all host maple sugaring events in March. It’s a fun, affordable ($3 to $6) way to see how maple sugar is made.

2

STAGE NATURE CENTER

Learn how people processed maple sugar in the past and see similarities in the collecting, boiling, and drawing off maple syrup today on Saturdays in March.

3

MAYBURY FARM

Hop on a wagon and take a walk into the sugar bush. You’ll learn how sugar maple trees produce sap, why sap flows, how to tap, and collect sap from the tree. Tours are available in March and April.

It’s not a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a helicopter marshmallow drop!

MARSHMALLOW DROPS Keep your eye on the sky, it will soon be raining marshmallows!

As an alternative to the Easter Egg Hunts, marshmallow drops have been providing family fun for decades. If you’ve never been, don’t worry - your kids don’t eat the marshmallows - they trade them in for other treats, after racing onto an open field to gather as many as they can or

a designated amount (depends on location). Follow LittleGuide for updates and keep these event hosts on your radar: Wayne County Parks (Westland & Trenton) Oakland County Parks (Royal Oak) Grosse Pointe Parks HYPE Recreation Center (Dearborn Heights)
