The notion he wished to present was a concept expounded on him as a young businessman. One will encounter two kinds of people based on their actions – either a giver or a taker. “We have to be more conscious about meeting the simple standard of giving more than we take to inspire a bright future,” said Jim. From this idea sparked a simple story. The family embarked on a journey to bring to life The Musical Adventure of One-Shot Billy. “The over-arching theme is the concept of giving. And it’s something that we’re always cognizant of and the book embodies that,” said Jim. In the novel, the protagonist is a mythical icon, who finds a mirror guitar. Throughout the story he struggles with self-identity and his

image in the guitar reflects a hole in his heart. He must learn how to give in order to fill this hole. Although the plot revolves around mythical icons and maintains fairytale influences, it echoes the modern day. “It takes into account all the things we’re struggling with in society, our culture and injects this mythical icon into it to see through his lens how it could be better,” said Jim. The novel promotes not only the give and take philosophy but also people’s potential and the importance of nature conservation. The target audience is middleschool-age children but it’s a worthwhile read for the whole family. There are also fifteen songs in the story, professionally recorded and available for listen at www.oneshotbilly.com.

The Scanlon Family Giving a Little Each Day By Allison Merchant We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story Upon entering the Scanlon family home, there was an immediate feeling of comfort and warmth. Greeted by Veronica Scanlon and the ever-present furry companion Nicky, Jim and Holly joined in the kitchen for a conversation about family, community, and lifestyle choices. “Open-mindedness: that’s really key,” said Jim, about his family values. “There’s no reason to shut down a conversation, there’s only a reason to continue to talk and try to figure out what’s best for each other and what’s best for ourselves then take our best into the world.” Jim and Veronica, moved to Little Silver with recognition of the opportunities the town had to offer for their daughter, Holly. “When you raise children in the community, it’s important to be involved,” said Jim. The two participated as coaches with Holly’s sports, enjoying the camaraderie that came with being around their neighbors and Holly’s friends. 4

“We cared most about kids growing up and putting them in a position to feel good and help be successful individually, and as teammates to build self-esteem,” said Jim. Holly attends Red Bank Regional High School and is already influenced by her parents’ community immersion. My parents are always there for me,” said Holly. “They helped me with believing in myself and taught me how important it is to help others.” Support and generosity go a long way with the Scanlon family. Each member has their own pursuits and credits their foundations to an encouraging and open home. After graduating from Rutgers with an English degree, Jim pursued a career in Corporate Real Estate. A few years ago he approached Veronica with the realization he needed to step away from his job. “I was trying to be true to myself,” said Jim. He set a simple goal to put out into the world a concept through creativity that would make it a better place. This is where the burgeoning story of One-Shot Billy began. Little Silver Neighbors

Annual Little Silver Fire Company St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser By Lori Draz It is the greenest day of the year in Little Silver – The Annual Little Silver Fire Company’s St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser, taking place Saturday, March 17 from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Jim found strength in his family’s support for this dream and it became a group effort. Veronica helped him self-publish The Musical Adventure of One-Shot Billy while Holly aided in the editing process. His perseverance also contributed to his courtship of Veronica after their brief meeting in 1993 at a Steeple Chase Race in Far Hills. After receiving her phone number, he proceeded to call her each week and leave messages jokingly labeling himself as the ‘Monday Night Caller’. This continued for about three months before he was late for his weekly call one evening and she answered the phone. This began their relationship over phone conversations that soon blossomed into love and their marriage in 1997. “When my parents married, they promised each other to be independent together,” said Holly. To this day that remains the family motto: To be independent together. While Jim pursues different presentations of the give and take concept for schools and camps, Veronica continues her activity in the community. She has contributed to the FARE Food Allergy Walk for more than 10 years. “Holly was diagnosed with food allergies in 2005 so I got actively involved with the Monmouth County support group for food allergies,” said Veronica. She teamed up with JoAnn Molnar from Rumson to bring the walk to the Jersey Shore, raising more than

150,000 dollars. Veronica remained the co-chair of the organization for 5 years before stepping back to continue as a volunteer. Health and wellness has always been important to Veronica. It was during her training for the 2001 Tin Man, a small version of the Iron Man Triathlon, that she found another passion: yoga. Yoga provided Veronica a method of finding focus and grounding herself in times of stress. In 2012 she received her teaching certification and currently is an instructor at Monmouth Beach Yoga and Wellness. She believes that what you learn on the mat can be taken with you into your day. It’s being true to yourself and your body, while tapping into the calm space within your mind,” said Veronica. Shared community is important to the Scanlon family. Whether it is partaking in Little Silver Day, the Szabo Halloween celebration with Mike Wilson’s antique tractor hay rides, or supporting Holly marching besides her band members at the Memorial Day Parade there is always friendship. “We want to give much more than we take and be aware of what’s truly important in life, like supporting the next generation, especially through nature conservation said Jim. “We just try to be good neighbors and good citizens of our lovely community called Little Silver.”

The Little Silver Fire Company St. Patrick's Day fundraiser has become an annual event that the entire community looks forward to. With strong support from Little Silver and surrounding community residents and event sponsors, the Fire Company has been able to meet their fundraising goals and promote Irish heritage while providing a great and memorable day for all that attend. The party takes place in a large, comfortable heated tent at the Little Silver Fire Department, Fire House Field, located at 480 Prospect Avenue in Little Silver, and it’s a fun time for all! The day includes live music, the CBA Pipes and Drums Band, Irish step dancing, a Kid’s Fun Zone inside the fire house, raffles and plenty of traditional Irish food and drink. There’s even a free trolley with designated stops throughout Little Silver for a fun and safe trip home. Tickets are $50.00 for adults, $10.00 for teens, and kids are free. Tickets are available online at www.littlesilverfd.org with a prepaid discount through March 1 or at the door. Sponsorships and 50/50 tickets may also be purchased online. Come on out and support the brave men and women of the Little Silver Fire Department and have a great time doing it at the 9th Annual Little Silver Fire Company St. Patrick's Day Fundraiser. For more information on the event or sponsorship opportunities, call Kevin Brennan (732) 245-7677.

Is your hair having a hangover? Winter is the time for a change! Every day, as professionals we are approached with concerns about dry hair, unhealthy scalp environments, and hair damage. A quality product, along with a good hair care regimen, is essential to healthy and shiny hair. Switching your shampoo and conditioner every other season is beneficial to keep the scalp and hair in optimal condition. Your mane needs to be fed different nutrients with each season of the year. This time of year, adding a hair mask or treatment at the salon back bar will re-energize and re-calibrate your scalp and balance the moisture levels of the hair. Protect, invest, and learn what professional products will do for your hair care regimen. Many clients feel purchasing haircare outside of their salon will result in lower costs and convenience. This is severely eroding to the professional knowledge of a stylist as they know what your hair requires. Mass retailers such as Amazon, grocery stores, and pharmacies are filled with professional products... even though they are often outdated, sold off the back of a shipment truck, or filled with substitute ingredients - and still are sold as a professional line product. Consequently, this makes the product obsolete and drastically renders the performance, which is harmful to your hair. We all try and look at ingredients and sources of the food we eat to stay healthy and avoid damaging our bodies, and our hair should be no different. Buying products from a trusted stylist is the best way to protect your investment and achieve salon-worthy hair. 9

2018 Markham Cares Day By Jen Holzapfel On Friday, January 26th, sixth graders from Markham Place School in Little Silver were treated to an afternoon of presentations and activities to promote Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self Control (CARES). Members of the community who have made a positive impact visited the school and inspired kids to give back. This year, representatives from Best Buddies, Backpack Crew, Lt. Dennis W Zilinski the 2nd Memorial Fund, HabCore and Holiday Express shared their time, enthusiasm and knowledge for the ninth annual Markham CARES Day. Students were actively engaged in activities such as writing letters to military personnel, crafting encouraging messages to fellow classmates, making scarves for those in need, roleplaying how to manage a household and packing up shipments of donated items earmarked for troops stationed overseas.

John E. Johnson Veteran, Father, and Sportsman

FEATURING AN ARRAY OF GOURMET PIZZAS

By Veronique Manfredini Born on July 5th, 1929 John E. Johnson, also known as “Jack,” was an Air Force Veteran of World War II.

wife developed Alzheimer’s a few years ago and John continued to feed her meals three times a day for 2 years until she passed away.

As a very patriotic American, Mr. Johnson served in Korea as a fighter pilot in the Air Force at the end of WWII. There, he gained admission to West Point where he graduated in 1953 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the US Air Force. He got his wings at Williams Air Force Base in 1954 and flew fighters, such as F-5’s and F-84’s, in England. After an accident that caused him to medically retire, he entered the private sector and proceeded to become an executive at Lockheed Martin, a global security and aerospace company.

His greatest passion was playing sports with his boys. Wiffleball, tennis, and golf were his sports of choice, but he was a big Yankee enthusiast as well. He was a member of the Monmouth Beach Bath and Tennis Club and member of the CBA Fathers club for 40 years.

He was very proud of his time at the United States Military Academy and brought his family to spend a lot of time there, thus his children – John, Joel, and Bobby – desired attending service academies as well. Two of them graduated the Air Force Academy and one from West Point. Mr. Johnson married his high school sweetheart from Bayonne (NJ) and they were married for 54 years. They moved from North Jersey to Little Silver in 1970 and lived in the community for 40 years. He was a very “hands-on” father, strict but very caring and fiercely protective. John thought it was important for his family to stand up for each other and to take responsibility for their actions. But, his beautiful

YOUTH SPOTLIGHT

Starting Young – Volunteers in Sports By Veronique Manfredini the edge of their 25th anniversary, the organization was renamed RallyCap Sports. University chapters were created like the Bowling Green State University chapter. The program is specifically designed for people age 7 and older, with special needs. It utilizes customized equipment, coaching techniques, and athletic drills to help each RallyPlayer experience the three pillars of foundation – social integration, healthy living, and greater self-confidence. For more information and to volunteer go to http://www. rallycapsports.org/

The value of community changes from one individual to another, so when four young Little Silver residents decided to volunteer, they gave back to that community through their passions. John Venino (15), Michael Wood (14), Ryan Karr (15), and Reilly Venino (12) participate in a great volunteer program at RallyCap Sports held at the Thompson Middle School in Middletown. John, Michael, and Ryan are teammates on the Red Bank Regional Freshman Bucs basketball team. Reilly plays for the Markham Place School basketball team. They volunteer their Saturday mornings at RallyCaps by bringing their love and skill of basketball to the court and helping special needs kids experience the game in an interactive, encouraging environment. RallyCap Sports was born in 1990 under the name of Challenged Youth Sports, from the brilliant mind and efforts of Paul Hooker and his wife. As a grass-roots softball league, it grew into a year-round association with more than a dozen athletic options. In 2014, at
