RESIDENT FEATURE
The Soden Family
In The Business of Having Fun By Allison Merchant
We would like to thank Stacie Bender Heritage House Sotheby's International Realty for sponsoring this month's feature story Twenty years ago Carolina Soden agreed to go on a blind date. She was a freshman at Rutgers University and studying for her Bachelors in the Arts. It was here she met Hal Soden, also a freshman at Rutgers and a man she would ten years later call her husband. Her date at the time wasn’t too happy about that. The two had been introduced by a mutual high school friend, Jack Dugan, only to learn they had even attended the same prom. But the fates designed a different meeting where the impression lasted much longer. Flash forward to today: Hal, Carolina, Charlie and Oliver dance through the days with adventure and constant movement. Hal is an Insurance 4
& Risk Management Advisor Oliver L E Soden Insurance Agency and Partner at New Jersey Agents Alliance. He well known throughout Little Silver as a co-president of the Little Silver Business and Professional Association (LSBPA) with Lori Saybolt and organized the annual Little Silver Carriage Rides. He was also a Class Parent, along with Jeane Lauro for Charlie’s kindergarten class at Point Road last school year. Hal is the Town Historian of his hometown of Jamesburg, New Jersey, past President of the CBA Alumni Association, and helps with Advancement to Eagle Scout with the Monmouth Council of Boy Scouts of America. And if that didn’t keep his schedule busy, he currently is the Chairman Elect of Big I New Jersey, his industry association. Little Silver Neighbors

Carolina works in Commercial Print Sales with Hatteras Press, she is an EFLS Trustee, and a member of the Junior League of Monmouth County. She has had countless food adventures with Charlie in the kitchen, trying new foods and letting Oliver work his magic with a mortar and pestle. And if anyone is interested in getting together for a cooking club, she’s got her spatula ready! Each year the Sodens contribute to the Nativity’s food prep meal delivery at the Nativity Church in Fair Haven.

Being involved in the community serves as an important value for the Soden family. The family moved to North Sunnycrest nearly ten years ago. During the search for a home, Hal and Carolina fell in love with the neighborhood. “We were particularly drawn to Little Silver because of the friendly, small-town feel, great reputation of the schools and proximity of the beach,” Hal said. The Sodens truly take advantage of the benefits Little Silver has to offer. Months in advance they begin planning big Halloween celebrations,

hours are spent carving pumpkins. The annual block party always brings smiles and good times. “Sunnycresters know how to throw a good party,” Carolina said. “We absolutely love our neighbors, and we couldn’t imagine ever wanting to leave here.” She adds the benefits of living on the same street as their pediatrician, attorney and dentist! During hurricane Sandy a tree came down on the Sodens’ home and crushed the garage, sun room and one of their cars. True to Little Silver nature, the neighborhood came together in that time of need. As a family, the Sodens remain active and full of energy. Charlie spent most summer Saturdays skating at the Red Bank Armory and Sundays taking advantage of the NJ Devils Learn to Skate program at the Middletown Ice Arena. She plays rec soccer and attended rec camp this year with many neighbors. In addition to being physically active, Charlie loves to perform. She has been involved in Broadway for Beginners classes at Count Basie Theater and enjoys putting on shows in the family room. Perhaps reflective of his family being always on the go, Oliver is a big fan trains, trucks, and cars. “He has a passion for trucks in particular and has a very emphatic way of pronouncing the word ‘truck’,” Carolina said. Hal has competed in a few triathlons with Dan Oldroyd, including “Moose Man” Ironman 70.3, and completed Ironman Lake Placid when Charlie was only three months old. He is on a fantasy football team with Eric Wasserfall where this year they won big! Hal enjoys surfing, skiing and playing lacrosse in the Two River Old Guys Lacrosse League. You’ll find avid fans of the Giants, NJ Devils, and Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Soden house. Activity remains a standing them with the Soden family. Their energies and efforts continue to put smiles on their faces and those surrounding them. In their ten years of living in Little Silver they have immersed themselves in the community and embodied the neighborhood’s friendly rapport. They look forward to many more years of block parties, school events, and town shenanigans.

EDUCTION
Architects for The Future: The PTO Provides Educational Building Blocks By Allison Merchant September is a month of change. It signals the start of a new school year, the transition of summer into fall, the final quarter of another yearlong journey. The Little Silver Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) continues the paradoxical tradition of change as the 2018-2019 school year begins. And yet this group of animated and committed individuals takes that tradition one step further and pushes for not only change but for progress. I had the pleasure of speaking with this year’s co-presidents Normajean Swiss and Ellen Tizio to learn of not only the amazing events planned for this year but about the foundation behind the commitment of the PTO to Little Silver. “We have this vision of enhancing the experience of the children and the teachers and the parents,” Swiss said. “Our theme for the year: Get Connected.” One of the core components to this organization is its members and volunteers. Their dedication to help further the education of their children as well as others is seen daily within the community. And Swiss and Tizio recognize to continue this success is to maintain constant communication. “We want to streamline communications and make it easier for parents to connect with one another and connect to volunteer opportunities within the school,” Swiss said. “And so, we’re in the midst of enhancing our website. We already have a directory and a mobile app for the phones.” This connection with the parents and individuals of the Little Silver community extends to the faculty of the district as well. The educators are considered equally as the educated. “We have been so fortunate to have such a wonderfully collaborative relationship,” said Carolyn Kossack, Little Silver District Superintendent. “We have an open line of communication and we work together for the benefit of the children.” One of the events to kick off the school year will be the welcome back breakfast for all teachers on September 4. The PTO also provides $10,000 in Teacher Wish List Grants, where the grants provide teachers with classroom and curricular supplies that is not supported by the constraints on the district budget.
“I have worked in Little Silver for a long time and the one constant has been how involved the community is in the educational arena,” said Pamela Albert Devine, Principal for Point Road School. “Through the dedicated work of the school district, the community support organizations and community members, Little Silver has been able to work collaboratively to create and sustain a reputation of excellence.” Little Silver PTO acknowledges the alluring factor that a successful school district provides the town and has dedicated its energies to contribute its resources for an enriched education experience. “Without the efforts not just our executive board and trustees, but each and every member of our community steps up to volunteer their time, foster our events and bring their expertise to the table our PTO and schools would not be what they are today,” Swiss said. An example of this is the upcoming annual 5K race hosted by the PTO. It is their largest fundraiser of the year and 2018 marks its 25th anniversary. Kossack and Albert Devine both expressed their excitement to attend. Both administrators have attended the event each year they have been in the Little Silver district, a testament to the strength of the PTO to bring people together. “I would say I personally have never met a more dedicated group of people,” admitted Tizio. “People who are so willing to give their time and their energy and their money to this cause, I have never met people who are more dedicated to that.” Each and every effort surrounding the PTO: its 35 committees, executive board, trustees, sponsors, and volunteers encompass the spirit and nature of Little Silver. It allows compassionate individuals to come together each day to preserve the past, enjoy the present and progress for the future. “It really is a testament to the kind of people who live and work in our town,” Swiss said. “They understand the value in investing in our future and we couldn’t be more thankful.”
“We feel strongly that we have to give back,” Swiss said. “Because these are the people who we are asking support us. We want to connect our parents and our sponsors and everybody who is part of our mission because it takes a village to work hard for our kids. And we want to make sure our kids make better global citizens.” The PTO embodies the mission of enhancement whether it be the children's education, experiences or environment. It emphasizes the sense of community seen within the town and continues to strive for that personal connection only found in a group of devoted and passionate individuals.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Sandy Paws Fur-loving Times For Twenty Years Submitted by Apex Sports & Regenerative Medicine In 1998 Dawn Tallo traded in her work in the fashion industry with fashionable fur for a different kind of coat, opening Sandy Paws in Sea Bright, NJ. The business began on the premise of providing gentle loving care with pet grooming salon services. This concept grew over the next ten years and by 2007 Tallo opened a dog daycare and kennel/grooming salon in Port Monmouth. “After five years, two small children and no sleep, I decided to go small again, and reopen in Shrewsbury as a grooming studio,” elaborated Tallo. The new studio caters to dogs and cats with full salon services with the occasional nail grooming for rabbits and ferrets. When Tallo began, she understood the pros and cons of different grooming studio models. Working with animals her entire life, she wanted to provide that comfort one experiences with family members. She aspired to create an environment that was clean, fun and stress-free. “You should always expect the best from your pet care professionals,” Tallo said. “We are here to help you be the best owner for your pets. We work hard every day to make you and your fur baby happy and we thank you for your loyalty and trust over the past 20 years. We look forward to many more.”
Tallo values the benefits of dedication and hard work. Her family instilled in her upbringing the moral reward of putting in the effort each and every day with their own business-owning ventures. She constantly pulls inspiration from her heritage as well as the individuals she encounters daily in the shop. “My best days are when dogs and owners come in for the first time, both unsure and nervous, and leave happy and want to come back,” Tallo said. This strive for excellence reflects Tallo’s passion for animals and her strong sense of humor. She relates a recent encounter with a 60 pound puppy who was not excited at the prospect of a bath. Mischief ensued and Tallo received a bath as well that day. But the joy expressed by both parties during the incident led to a successful bath and an extremely happy puppy. “He pranced around the shop like a boss after his grooming was complete. He was very proud of himself,” Tallo said. These are the small memories that make the most of the unflagging efforts in running a business. Tallo receives support from her wonderful crew Amanda and Kristina, and her family. Her husband Steve works for Omni, an electrical contracting firm and she has four children: two step children and two from a previous marriage. Family is important to Tallo and remains a strong foundation for the success of her business. Aside from being the founder and sole owner of Sandy Paws, Tallo also work closely with a local rescue WAG ON INN RESCUE GROUP (WOI) www.wagoninn.rescuegroup.org. “I love to have my hands in many jars,” she admitted. She currently has three dogs, two adopted through WOI, the other adopted privately. Bean is a four-year-old Sato, Amy an eightyear-old Dashound and Mr. Bumbles is a Pekingese between the age of 13 and 15. All of her furry family can be seen on her website www.sandypawsnj.com.

In the fall of 2015, Rocky's former owners locked him in a crate, took him out into the woods and left him. Fortunately, he was discovered—emaciated, dehydrated and covered in ticks—and was brought to the Monmouth County SPCA. The SPCA’s staff slowly brought him back to physical health but his trust in humans remained severely damaged. The Loveafoster canine foster program stepped in and placed Rocky in a loving and patient foster home. Fast forward two years later and Rocky has made incredible strides. But Rocky is still a work in progress, which has made finding a permanent home for him difficult. He needs a family that can provide an understanding and low stress environment, and continued training to combat his anxiety. Rocky is fully house trained, loves car rides, and is happily crated when his people go to work. He’s lived with dogs and cats alike but can also be happy on his own. Rocky may not ever be entirely at ease with the world, but he is a sweet and special soul who deserves to find his forever home. If you’re interested in meeting Rocky please contact the MCSPCA at (732) 542-5962 or email fostering@monmouthcountyspca.org

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT
Kortney’s Challenge — Every Step Counts By Allison Merchant “The first Kortney’s Challenge was held in September 2006, only four months after Kortney passed,” Gillette explained. “All of Kortney’s nine-year-old friends wanted to help with the foundation and I didn’t know how they could help, but I knew they could walk two miles. That was the reason for the first Kortney’s Challenge and remains this distance to allow all to be able to participate.” On Sunday August 5 at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, NJ a group of individuals laced up their racing shoes. The Kortney’s Challenge 2 Mile FUN Run/Walk celebrated its 12th year in existence serving as the signature for the Kortney Rose Foundation. Founder of the organization and host of the event, Kristen Gillette explained the meaning behind the 2 Mile FUN Run/Walk. The foundation began in support for families that have been affected by children with brain tumors and raise money together to support collaborative research.
Girls 12 & under finishers
The race results reflected the participants of all ages and fitness levels with the first-place winner crossing the line in 10 minutes and the last strolling in after 45 minutes of fun. “What began in memory of a nine-year-old little girl named Kortney Rose Gillette has grown into something so much larger and more important than we ever could’ve imagined,” Gillette said. She stood at the finish line at greeted each participant with a high-five as they crossed, without even realizing the beautiful symbolism where the Kortney Rose Foundation has touched many, many lives.

EXPERT CONTRIBUTOR
Back to School with Food Allergies Contributed by Dr. Tina Zecca The prevalence of food allergies has been increasing in the US, specifically in the pediatric population over the last decade. It is estimated that almost 6 million children have food allergies and about 30% with food allergies have more than one allergic food trigger. The most common foods that trigger allergic responses include milk, egg, soy, wheat, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Allergists can help with diagnosing food allergies through skin testing and laboratory follow-up. Food challenges are performed under strict medical settings under the supervision of a physician when a food allergy is in question or when an individual may have grown out of a specific food allergy. Food allergic reactions are quite serious and can be life threatening. Parents are especially cautious during this time of year when children go back to school. Special care is given to avoid food triggers by reading labels carefully for food avoidance and cross contamination. Serious allergic reactions can lead to anaphylaxis and patients and caregivers are instructed to use injections of epinephrine promptly within minutes of the onset of anaphylaxis. Not treating promptly with epinephrine is a risk factor for fatalities. More than 15% of school aged children with a history of food allergies have had a reaction in school. School settings are given epinephrine auto-injectors to be used by nurses and delegated staff in emergency situations. About 20-25% of epinephrine administrations in school settings involve individuals whose allergy was unknown at the time of the reaction. Reactions can happen in settings other than the cafeteria and care must be given to avoid allergen contact especially during classroom parties, bake sales, and most importantly, snacking. It is imperative that food allergy awareness be taken seriously in the community as well as the school environment. Prevention and treatment modalities continue to be under investigation and research in food allergy treatment is moving ahead quickly.

Brooke Connell Lacrosse Class B North Coach of the Year By Allison Merchant With the start of a new school year, that means a fresh batch of goals for many of the athletic teams at RBR. Over the past three years the Girls’ Lacrosse team has been increasing in the amount of games and improving their record, finishing the 2018 season with a record of 148. This change reflects the implementation of Little Silver native and 2007 RBR alumni Brooke Connell. Connell received the 2018 Class B North Coach of the Year in honor of her dedication to the team and to the game. She approached the position three years ago with the outlook of starting with a clean slate. Enjoying the game is a vital component in Connell’s coaching where her philosophy is to have a positive attitude and to create a positive experience for all the girls. She emphasized the need for
communication with players and parents to provide encouragement. Competitiveness and motivation are equally important, but the most essential factor of the sport is to have fun. After graduation from RBR, Connell continued to play lacrosse her four years at Drew University in Madison, NJ. She previously coached at both the middle school and the varsity levels at the Ranney School in Tinton Falls in 2014 and with the United Lacrosse club program. “I truly enjoy coaching, I love the game and love being able to coach it at the high school where I attended,” Connell said. Little Silver Neighbors cannot wait to see what’s in store for the 2019 season and wish the fall sports beginning or have already begun the best of luck!

GREENWAYS & WATERWAYS
Biking the Rolling Hills of Duke Farms By Billie Crawford-McNally In the beginning of August, I watched the first leaves fall from our giant oaks. It was sweltering hot, I had just ridden my bike home from work, my temples were pounding from the heat. I was checking my, yet to ripen tomatoes, when a gentle wind blew, and the first yellow leaves floated down to earth. I had noticed other signs: books brought home for summer reading panickily be searched for, an absurd amount of marble composition tablets in our local stores and, (this one adds salt to the wound) Halloween Candy in those same stores. While it seems too soon to put away our boogie boards, it’s never too soon to plan a fall excursion. Duke Farms was the brain child of James Duke the founder of Duke Power and American Tobacco. He wanted to replicate the plantation feel from his muchloved home state of North Carolina, on the shores of the Raritan River. He was able to amass nearly 3,000 acres of land containing nine lakes and 18 miles of road. All of which are now open to the public thanks to the Dukes Farm Foundation. Whether you choose to bike, hike or in winter, snowshoe, you will start at the visitor’s center. Just outside of the main doors, on Sundays from spring to fall, there is a beautiful farmers market featuring local meats, cheeses, breads and produce, perfect for an instant lunch before you start your adventure. If you do not want the rigmarole of packing your bikes, the farm offers a bike share program, which rents for only $5 for two hours. There are a plethora of activities and classes available throughout the year at the farm for both children and adults. There are naturalists on duty to answer questions and give directions. Check out the website: www.dukefarms.org, for more information. My best advice for starting your tour is to pick a path and just go. The last time we went we brought bikes and I believe we left no stone unturned. There are many beautiful buildings along the pathways. One of the highlights of the property is the Orchid Range. Stepping into this greenhouse is like taking a trip to Gauguin’s Tahiti. You are enveloped in a tropical mist the minute you open the doors. Giant palms and simply amazing orchids populate this ornate glass edifice. It’s a calming respite to sit amongst the greenery and hanging moss, to breath in the earthy scents of a subtropical environment. There are ruins on the upper part of the property. An elaborate labyrinth outlines the foundation of a house never built. As Duke’s business changed, he found
himself spending less time at the estate and abandoned his plans to build a mansion the likes of which had not before been seen in this area. Not to be missed is the Hay Barn. The original structure was damaged in a fire, but the towering fieldstone walls have remained and house a collection of marble sculptures of beautifully depicted human forms. The grassy floor and open sky give it an eerie feel. It lends itself to either the perfect setting for a horror film or the most romantic picnic. I have a little insider intel for you, namely The Pet Cemetery. It lays just off Fox Hollows Lane, one of the inner loops. Doris Duke has quite a collection of much loved, exotic animals most of which are buried here. The tombstones for Binky, Jeff and a camel named Baby are well maintained and easily accessible. Also, check out the ponds and lakes. There are beautiful waterfalls which release water throughout the day. They are on a schedule, so make sure you time passing them accordingly. There was a second mansion which was recently torn down to make way for the opening of 50 more acres to the public, this helped to complete a loop around the property. A few pieces of foundation are all that remains of Doris Duke’s home. She had grown up on the property and while she owned many houses, Duke Farms was her passion and her home. She understood the importance of stewardship and conservation of our natural world and began her Foundation to protect and open to the public, her small piece of it for generations to come. For those of you who like a good read, pick up a book on Doris Duke’s life. She was an incredibly interesting woman, who at 12 years old inherited a fortune and amassed even more wealth throughout her life. It was not her money, although it helped, which set Doris apart from other socialites of her era but how she lived and shared her wealth. She certainly exemplified my Carpe Diem ideology. Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our April 2018 issue Family Feature! For advice from an avid explorer, look for her monthly column Greenways and Waterways in upcoming issues to find more adventures in Little Silver and the beautiful world around it. She recently published her novel The Grove found on Amazon. Visit her Facebook at www.facebook.com/billiecrawfordmcnally.
