that are living with families that are access limited and become restrained yet they’re working,” Christine added. “These families are only two or three paychecks away from depleting their financial cushion. It’s just really nice to be able to give back to their neighbors when they have a medical crisis because that medical crisis can really set people back.” One of the most recent families BloomAgain supported was Kelly Neilson from Hazlet. Kelly had been undergoing chemotherapy treatment and surgery during her battle with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. In addition to her two grown daughters, Kelly cares for her son Nicholas, who has Type 1 Diabetes and Down Syndrome. Her illness forced her to take time off from her established job at a local school. BloomAgain’s assistance helped Kelly physically and mentally, inspiring her to now help other families in similar need. “When I started this, my children were young and I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to give,” Adrienne said. She currently resides in Little Silver with her husband Jonathan Mackay and their two children Benjamin and Charlotte. “But by following [Christine’s] lead, it has opened up other doors for me and it is so rewarding, and I give more than I ever thought.” Both women realize the importance of

showing their children the work that they do each day. As sisters, they understand the impact a strong role model can have growing up. Christine recognized the advantage of coming from a familial background and holding similar views on helping people is what makes the sister-run dynamic of BloomAgain so strong. “My sister and I love working together,” Adrienne said. “We are a great tag team! It’s really satisfying knowing you have reached another person in need during a difficult time.” “It’s nice that my daughters can get involved in this and I can teach them to be philanthropic,” Christine said. “I think it’s really important to be part of a family that is philanthropic, this is a great example for them. And they’re very excited to always help me out with computer work and volunteering at our fundraising events. It’s nice to make it a family affair.” “We all need a hand sometimes and a chance to bloom again,” Adrienne added. “We hope we have created something our children can be proud of.” DO YOU KNOW A NEIGHBOR WHO HAS A STORY TO SHARE? rowing up, Adrienne Supino viewed her sister as a role model. As both women grew into adulthood, Adrienne admired her sister’s infinite capacity to help others. She watched as her sister worked in education as a classroom teacher with children with disabilities while raising, counselor and then raised her own two children. Christine Rieger encouraged and supported Adrienne’s pursuit of life in Manhattan working in broadcast journalism. “I was in New Jersey raising my children, so we were on different paths. Still close but living in different states and maybe just seeing each other every once in a while,” said Christine. Now they live in neighboring towns and see each other every day. The sisters work together to support families through their non-profit foundation BloomAgain. The purpose of the BloomAgain Foundation is to provide financial assistance to economically vulnerable working women when they need it most, during personal or family medical emergencies. “So many people, especially single mothers, are living paycheck to paycheck with little or no financial cushion. Sickness or injury can threaten a family’s stability,” Adrienne said. BloomAgain was founded by Dr. Lois Frankel. An acclaimed author and corporate coach 4
in California, Dr. Frankel underwent treatment for breast cancer and recognized how fortunate she was to have the resources for a steady-paced healing process. It prompted her to think of the thousands of women who did not have those resources and inspired the beginning of her volunteer organization. Dr. Frankel is Adrienne and Christine’s cousin and her work encouraged them to bring BloomAgain to the east coast. In 2015 Adrienne and her sister Christine founded BloomAgain Foundation NJ. Christine serves as Executive Director while Adrienne is Vice Chairman. “We’ve never done anything like this together or worked together,” Adrienne admitted. “And we realized that we do work together really well. I really depend on her; she always pulls through for me.” When Adrienne was in Manhattan, she was working as a television reporter with NJN public Television and Radio and FOX5. Christine was a teacher and a mother of two girls, living in Red Bank with her husband Mike Rieger. “Now we are in constant contact with each other every single day and talking about things that really matter like what to get mom for Mother’s Day. It’s a whole different dynamic, discussing serious topics, and being involved
in the community together,” Christine said. “So, it’s totally different than anywhere our relationship was ten years ago.” The sisters work together daily on projects and growing the foundation. They both play off each other’s strengths: Adrienne’s journalistic and marketing skills, and Christine’s leadership and organizational talents. Both sisters joke about their ability to read the other’s mind and truly appreciate their collaborated finished products. BloomAgain is an all-volunteer registered 501(3)c organization. All money raised is given to women and families in need. The NJ chapter of the foundation has helped more than 60 families in the four years of its existence. “BloomAgain steps-in with grant money that can keep a family afloat. BloomAgain writes checks directly to landlords and utility companies and provides food cards when needed,” Adrienne said. “BloomAgain locates potential clients through our community partners such as Riverview Medical Center, LoveThyNeighbor, Lunch Break, and Bayshore Family Success Center.” “I don’t think that enough people realize how many people in the community, that are working hard, but are financially constrained, Little Silver Neighbors

By Sally Guerrasio, DMD “PLAY BALL!” is a phrase heard daily as children get ready to enjoy their favorite sports in the summer sun. Parents load the car with equipment, water, and their go-to snack, but how many remember to pack their child’s mouthguard? Studies have shown that 13-39% of all dental injuries in children are sports related1. And, while some injuries are inevitable, as children master their favorite sports, many dental issues could be avoided by ensuring that your child wears their mouthguard. These little plastic devices do a lot to protect your smile. An unprotected impact to the mouth can cause tooth fracture, soft tissue damage, tooth loss, and even facial fractures. These have also been several studies
demonstrating that a significant blow to an unprotected jaw can result in traumatic brain injuries/concussions2. Mouthguards not only act as a physical barrier to protect the teeth that they cover, but also as a shock absorber to diffuse the energy transferred in an impact. There are a few different types of guards, and parents should inquire with their child’s dental care provider as to which is the best fit for their sports star. The easiest to find and use are “stock” mouthguards found in almost every sports equipment store. There are usually a few sizes to choose from and they loosely cover the upper teeth. Boil and bite guards are also bought at the store, but are more form fitted to the child’s mouth. Parents mold a preheated guard to their
child’s upper teeth before use, giving it a more secure fit. Finally, custom mouthguards can only be made in a dentist’s office. An impression of the child’s mouth and bite pattern are taken in order to fabricate a guard that is uniquely fit to that patient. This type of guard offers the best fit and protection but is not always ideal for kids in the process of losing teeth. Whichever sport you choose and regardless of your child’s age, be sure that their smiles are protected this season with their mouthguard and go “Play ball!” 1 Sports Health. 2015 May; 7(3): 250–255. 2Is protective equipment useful in preventing concussion? This type of guard offers the best fit and protection but is not always ideal for kids in the process of losing teeth. Whichever sport you choose and regardless of your child’s age, be sure that their smiles are protected this season with their mouthguard and go “Play ball!” 1 Sports Health. 2015 May; 7(3): 250–255. 2Is protective equipment useful in preventing concussion? Long-standing businesses, along with newer established businesses in the community, made platefuls of food throughout the day. Oh, and I promised to continue my tour of the Navesink. I have two favorite launches on the Western end. I will share a little secret about them both. I like Maple Ave in Red Bank, go right or left once on the water, you cannot get lost and both ways are interesting. The inside intel: every year there is a boat parade at dusk right in front of Marine Park. A fleet of decorated vessels sail and motor, dressed to the nines under the waning sun. If you paddle just a little further, you can watch while listening to a live band provided by a local celebrity at his house party. My other favorite launch spot is Chris’ Landing on Front Street. Again, head in either direction. I like going west and heading towards Newman’s Springs Road. There is a surprising amount of wildlife up this estuary. I have it on good authority there is a ghost who wanders the parking area, so go at night if you dare. It has been a pleasure introducing you all to my favorite haunts. See you around town.
THIS IS MY LAST ARTICLE. I hope you have enjoyed the ride. (Or should I say the hike and paddle?) We live in a beautiful part of the country with so much nature at our fingertips. At first glance it seems all highways and shopping malls but look beyond the obvious. Be curious about the world around you, both big and small. Explore, whether it be your back yard, our County Parks or our country’s incredible National Parks, explore. More important, take your kids on adventures. Shut off the TV, unplug from your phones, forget about social media and taking a photo so it looks like you’re having fun, (I recently heard a mother say this to her kids), and actually have fun. I was raised by city folk who moved to the country (Oceanport) in 1958. My dad, having spent his childhood in an orphanage in Rockaway Beach was a farmer at heart. My mother, in true Ava Gabor fashion, bid adieu to city (Jersey that is) life but never left home without her kitten heels. I kid you not, the women hiked in slip-on wedges. Camping did not come naturally to them, but they understood the importance of being connected to the land. This is something we have instilled in our children as well. Any day you are outside is the best day. Buy a Passport to Your National Parks book and start collecting stamps from all 61 parks. Introduce your kids to a hoodoo in Bryce. Stand on the rim of both sides of the Grand Canyon. Witness the everglades before they are completely filled in. Skip rocks on a stream surrounded by the Teton range. Sled down the sandy hills of The Great Sand Dunes of Colorado. Soak in a natural hot spring in Stanley, Idaho. Take on a section of the Appalachian Trail along the Smokey Mountains or Shenandoah. Feel the sun kiss your face in the early morning while standing on top of Haleakala. Have a snowball fight in August at Mount Hood. Wait for wolf pups to emerge from the forest in Yellowstone. Take a watery hike up The Narrows in Zion. Get out and get moving. There are more than ten thousand State Parks in our country. Our state alone has 50. Some are right down the road; they are waiting for you. Monmouth County has 30 county parks, some of which I’ve written about but there is still a surprising amount I have not experienced but I will, and I challenge you to do the same. 14

FOR THE THIRD YEAR IN A ROW, the entire second grade participated in a class field trip to Little Silver’s small historical treasure, the Parker Homestead. Prepared with informative speakers, old artifacts for observation, and hands-on activities…the Parker Homestead never seems to disappoint! The Parker Homestead speakers, Mrs. Heller and Mrs. Ferguson, were extremely interesting as they shared their wealth of historical knowledge with the students. Mr. Akey, Mrs. Akey, and Point Road’s own principal, Dr. Albert-Devine, volunteered their time and knowledge as they shared about the Sickles Community Garden and bees. It wouldn’t have been as amazing of a trip without everyone coming together to help! The students engaged in various stations around the grounds coordinated by Point Road’s second grade teachers. At the Parker
July 2019
Homestead house, students listened to stories about Little Silver’s past, and observed objects from Colonial Times. They explored the barn and learned the purposes of old farming equipment. The Sickles Community Garden was visited to observe the garden set up, the aeration from the miner bees, and each student even got to plant a flower in the new Pollinator Garden! The students found Dr. Albert-Devine super interesting as she shared her wealth of knowledge, and experiences with the students about the life of bees. She even brought live bees for observation and a jar of her very own honey! It was a day filled with learning, engagement, and fun at Little Silver’s Parker Homestead.

POWER OFF WEEK

AS SCREENS are continually integrated into seemingly all aspects of life, it might seem more and more difficult to have conversations with the friends and family around you without the use of a smartphone or computer. This is why the Education Foundation of Little Silver (EFLS) decided to once again host Power Off Week in conjunction with National ScreenFree Week. During the week between April 29 and May 5, students and their families alike were urged to take the time that they would normally spend either watching television, or surfing the web, and instead interact with one another without the proxy of a device. For example, students at the school were given a “Power Off Week Challenge” sheet
July 2019
of
Point Road School
which they could fill out and return to school. They were rewarded by having their picture put onto the Point Road EFLS Billboard. The sheets had many different activities that students would need to complete “Bingo” style in order to complete their sheets. Some of these activities included playing basketball or soccer, going to the library, riding your bike, helping make dinner, or just making up a secret handshake with a friend. While the physical or educational aspects of the options do vary, the main takeaway from all of these options is that students would either be going out and getting some fresh air and sunshine or connecting with the family or friends around them. The school also played its part in the attempt for everyone to disconnect
for the week. Students were not given any homework that would require the computer. Additionally, the EFLS hosted events like a playdate at Sickles Park with an ice cream truck, as well as a dance with a D.J. These events as well as the students’ challenge sheets, hopefully imparted a realization that their HD screens, do not hold a candle to seeing and feeling the world directly with their own senses. Thus, despite the excellent tools that computers and other technology can serve as in the classroom or in the home setting, it is crucial that everyone finds the time to disconnect from these devices and instead connect with those around them.

hen It comes to time management, I’m terrible at it since I became a mom! I read all the help tips and I still struggle with it when it comes to anything outside of my daughter’s needs. I squeeze in my work, including this article, on what I call “walk naps”. She’s napping, I’m walking with her in jogging stroller and working. I have priorities that I do not compromise, which are to feed my family fresh healthy food that I prepare 90% of the time, have my home clean and clear, get exercise of some sort for at least an hour a day for myself six days a week, and care for my daughter in the best way I can. Outside of that everything else, including work and my businesses have taken a back seat. I’m not sure who can do it all but I’m not on that list. I wish that I was not multitasking constantly, but I am. I remind myself often that I’m grateful for the ability to do multiple things at once and for the knowledge and experience I’ve attained that has allowed it. I can cook multiple meals at once without really thinking about it. I can do a power walk with my daughter sleeping in stroller while making work calls and using the voice command for emails and notes. I can be honest about my strengths and limitations as to not make excuses for either. I’m trying to keep my life as simple as I can at this time. The abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables during this summer season allows for simple delicious meals that are quick and easy to prepare. Matching fresh tastes like endive and melon, or strawberries and arugula, or fennel and mandarins could not be simpler. Adding nuts and either grilled chicken, meat, or fish with some olive oil, lemon, and sea salt and you’re set. Keep some cooked grains in the fridge or potatoes to warm and you’re done. Enjoy the warmer weather, great fresh produce, and your time on this planet. Maybe that’s the key, not to try to manage time, but to actually enjoy it! Tammi is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from our November 2018 issue Family Feature! For advice from a degreed nutritionist, exercise specialist, and certified health coach, look for her monthly column Food for Thought in upcoming issues to find beneficial lifestyle alternatives and yummy recipes.

hat began as just an idea after a spin class at Jersey Strong two years ago finally came to fruition on May 29. Wendy Whittle, Point Road STEM teacher and Keri Hennessy-Wilson, Bradley Elementary Technology Coach wanted to do something more that could bridge their two school communities together. That's when the idea for STEM Bridges came into existence between the Little Silver and Asbury Park school districts. In March, students at both schools completed a small STEM challenge at their individual schools during their class time. Students were challenged to construct a lifeguard stand using only index cards and a foot of tape. When they were done, students created a video where they discussed their success or failure with the project and introduced
of
Point Road School
themselves. These were then shared virtually at each of the schools. Then on May 29, students were able to meet in person to participate in a STEAM Water Challenge day at Point Road School in Little Silver. When the Bradley students arrived, there was a meet and greet activity followed by two stations, create a water filter and construct a paddle boat, where students from both schools created combined teams to solve two challenges. The camaraderie within the teams was instantaneous and the academic conversation was amazing to observe. The day went off without a hitch and at the end of their time together, all the students agreed that they couldn’t wait to do it again next year so they could see their new friends again.

hat began as just an idea after a spin class at Jersey Strong two years ago finally came to fruition on May 29. When they were done, students created a video where they discussed their success or failure with the project and introduced

New Chapter In History By Allison Merchant AT THE TURN OF THE 20TH CENTURY, before Little Silver was the town it’s known as today, John Thompson Lovett built his family a home on Branch Avenue. More than a century later, the house will now be welcoming the sixth family into its history book. Affectionately called “Brooklawn”, the home holds many memories in its architecture and with its residents. The McNamara family, whom have resided in the house since the summer of 2000, are ready to extend another branch on the Brooklawn family tree. Susan McNamara spoke fondly of viewing her and her family’s occupancy as a custodian of the historical home. “We just thought it was time for this house — like I said we’re custodians and we
believe its time now for the next family to enjoy it,” McNamara said. “And keep it beautifully maintained and keeping beautiful in the way Mr. Lovett envisioned.” Lovett was a pioneer in the field of agriculture and developed many new varieties of fruits, ornamental plants, and shade trees. He opened his Little Silver firm in 1878 and turned it into a nursery that he passed down to his sons. His daughter Alida had an arts and crafts studio on the property from where she sold her pieces. McNamara believes the sunburst-designed fireplace mantel was one of her creations. When they moved into the house nearly twenty years ago, the family had just their fourth child and were quickly outgrowing their current
Little Silver home. It was by pure chance that they found the home, unaware of its existence, let alone the amazing history it holds. “My husband was driving to the train station at five o’clock in the morning, he normally took Willow from Monroe Avenue,” McNamara explained. “There was something going on with construction, so he decided to go instead down Branch Avenue, and he saw a sign that said: ‘For sale.’ So, he decided to drive up the driveway at five o’clock in the morning with his brights on. And he said ‘oh my God, this is the house I’ve always wanted. I’ve always wanted a big wrap around porch.’ Sure enough, that started the whole process.”

That kickstarted their new home and a friendship with their old neighbors: Hal and Mary Ruddy. Hal Ruddy was the son of the second owner of the Lovett home and shared his fond memories of growing up in the house. “We felt like we were custodians of a beautiful historic home and we wanted to really invest in it and take care of it. The kitchen never really been remodeled, and it had been a working kitchen. So, when Mr. [Hal] Ruddy came over, he said: ‘we never ate in here, this was the where cook worked. We ate in the dining room.’ He also showed me a little hole in the floor in the dining room and he said: ‘there used to be a button here and my mother would press it with

Community Event
Ready for the Future By Allison Merchant APRIL 5 Little Silver residents donned their best in gloomy weather to support the education of children in the community. Future Ready was hosted by the Education Foundation of Little Silver (EFLS) and was a raging success, raising more than $130,000 for the Little Silver Public Schools. This funding was raised through local business sponsors and town residents along with the auction at the event. All money raised ensures access to innovative educational tools and current technology for teachers and students. EFLS will be using the proceeds in various ways for Point Road School and Markham Place School. In addition to supporting the existing One-to-One Wonderful chromebook program, EFLS will purchase a six-year license for Social Studies Digital Courseware for Grades K-4 that will replace the current resources that are more than ten years old. This is similar to the support the foundation provided Markham Place School. Many of the grants that the EFLS approved are to replace old technology within the schools
that have become outdated or disruptive to the learning environment. In the technology and STEM programs at Point Road School, several items were approved to assist the younger grades with hands-on learning in coding and replace well-loved robots. But technology is not the only department the EFLS supports, there will also be a purchase of additional ukuleles for the music classes and upgraded technology for the art department. The mission of the foundation is to continue to support innovative programs and activities in science and technology, fine and performing arts, language research and culture, and other educational issues. “It was the most successful event we’ve ever had, we raised more than 130,000 dollars,” said Jamie Fleming, Vice President of EFLS. “Which is about 25,000 more than last year. We saw an increase in family sponsorships and an increase in corporate sponsorships. We also had a number of new corporate sponsors, so I think it was a huge success.”

Many changes came to fruition this year that contributed to the success of the event. The venue changed to the Navesink Country Club, much closer to home for many. More communication was used to help convey the purpose of Future Ready and the goals of EFLS. The foundation has been sending out newsletters in attempt to keep the community aware of what EFLS is working on at different times. More than 300 people attended the big event. “We see a lot of people who appreciate what we do and where the funds are going and how they’re helping the students and our children,” Fleming said. “We appreciate the people that take the time to attend the event and support the foundation and we hope to continue to work with the schools to bolster the technology as well as other educational resources for our students.”
