Hello Little Silver, Welcome to our September edition of Little Silver Neighbors, and happy “Locals Summer” to one and all! I hope we can have many more weeks of sunshine and warm weather to enjoy while we are getting back into the swing of things this month. School is in session, local organizations/clubs/teams are preparing for their respective seasons, and so much is happening around us in Little Silver—September is always an exciting time to be in town! Speaking of exciting... we are getting ready for our 2nd year anniversary issue of Little Silver Neighbors. Which will be a fiction issue, and the team can’t wait to get that out to everyone to enjoy. This month we have the Twill Family on our cover and as the resident feature. Jennifer had reached out to me a while back about one of our publications, and I am happy to have the privilege of sharing her story with everyone this month. Thank you to the Twill family for your time and being a part of Little Silver Neighbors. Also in this issue we have some awesome local stories on a number of wonderful residents including: a profile on BloomAgain Foundation, which you might remember from our July issue, coverage of the Tower Hill mission trip, the Little Silver PTO 5K, and a story about Raymond Forbes who will be starting his path to service this fall. We are proud to welcome back one of our local rock-star authors Billie McNally with her new column “Adventures in Serendipity”. From our sponsors this month we will have a business profile on Sandy Hook Yacht Sales for our water loving residents, and if you have thought about a boat, speak with Bill Bergin who can make those dreams come true! Also in this issue, one of our newest expert contributor sponsors Zephyr Performance Training Solutions has a great article to help get us back into shape! Zephyr is a locally owned gym with one of the owners just moving into town, stop in and ask about their Rock Wall that is on a treadmill—very cool! From our publication team, I would like to thank all of our sponsoring businesses for making this issue possible. Thank you readers, and I look forward to checking in with everyone again in our 2nd Anniversary Fiction Issue!! Gratefully Yours, Ryan Keating Publisher

and family and established her career with Apple, currently maintaining her position as senior manager. In 2016 when she shared this life with Jenn, the trip was more personal and special than a regular vacation. She was able to show Jenn the local side of the island, meet friends that helped shape a decade of her life, and connect the past, present, and future. When they returned from their wedding and honeymoon in Hawaii, the Twill Family had grown from two to three. Tuck, an eightyear-old chihuahua terrier mix, had lived with Krysta in Hawaii years ago. “While the northeast is certainly no tropical oasis, we still have the beach which he loves,” Jenn said. “We try to take him there as often as we can so he can run around and enjoy the sand between his paws.” A few weeks ago, their family grew again with Kona, a bernadoodle puppy. It’s during their walks around town that Krysta and Jenn have met more people and enjoyed the Little Silver community. “It’s amazing the number of dogs in the community, so you get to meet people,” Krysta said. “There are so many people we have met because we’re out walking dogs together. We’re

getting to know our neighbors a little bit better.” “It’s nice to be able to look over the fence and say hi, and then you’re now out gardening with someone else,” Jenn said. “I kind of forgot what it was like to say hi to someone on the street to be honest. So, it’s nice to have that back.” The two still visit the city to meet with old friends and stroll through the museums they love. At the end of the day when they return to their home and backyard, they find themselves reflecting on their fortune. “In moments when we are in just disbelief at the fortune we have in each other, in the places we get to travel, the things we get to do, and just enjoying each other's company, Krysta's mother always says, ‘how lucky are we?’,” Jenn said. “We have adopted that motto. We are just so fortunate to have each other and to be building this life together by the ocean and we often find ourselves saying that.”  DO YOU KNOW A NEIGHBOR WHO HAS A STORY TO SHARE? heir first date was a stroll across the water lily pond with Claude Monet. They took a dance class with Edgar Degas. And then they spent the day at the beach with Auguste Renoir. Krysta and Jennifer Twill fell in love over their love for impressionism. “We ended up going to all the major art museums like the Guggenheim, we go to MOMA, and we just made our way around them all,” Krysta said. Traversing to different museums was just the start of the pair’s many adventures. It was a few years back when they made a New Year’s Resolution to travel to a new place every month. A chalkboard was drawn up in their Manhattan apartment and together they checked off each month for the entire year. “I think we just love exploring and experiencing new things. My filter in life is that life is about experiences and the more you take advantage of, the more you learn and grow,” Krysta said. 6

“I have adopted that,” Jenn said. “I was aspirational about doing all those things and then Krysta helped bring out this adventurous, exploratory side of myself. I’ve never done this much traveling in my life until we met. And life has been so good because of all the things that I’ve been able to see and experience.” The Twills lived together in Manhattan for a few years before taking a chance and moving to Monmouth County for a new adventure. They chose Little Silver for the nostalgia it created for both of their hometowns. They stayed for the community. “We love our community and our neighbors,” Jenn said. “Everyone is so friendly. You go for a run, walk your dog down the street, mow your lawn, and everyone takes the time to smile and say hello. That’s something you don’t get in New York City and it’s what we really missed about living in a small community. It feels personal. We enjoy supporting our local businesses and one of our favorite activities

is going to the firehouse the last week of November and picking out a Christmas tree.” Their first two years in town, Jenn was commuting to work in New York City and that limited their time to enjoy the local camaraderie. But 2019 came with many changes. In January, Jenn began a much closer commute to a new position at WorkWave in the Bell Works building in Holmdel. In February, Krysta and Jenn were married on a palm farm on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. “Krysta used to live in Hawaii, so when I visited there for the first time back in 2016, I fell in love,” Jenn said. “It was a given that this was where we wanted to get married. And so we did!” Hawaii holds a special place in both Krysta and Jenn’s heart. Krysta was backpacking through Europe on her post college trip when she ran into a friend on a train to Amsterdam. She was invited to move to Hawaii and with an instant yes to a year, ten years of fun flew by. It was here Krysta formed many friendship Little Silver Neighbors

RESUME BUILDERS By Megan Mahlik

W

ith the closing of your school year comes the excitement of new beginnings. Although summer is a great time to relax and enjoy time with friends and your activities, you should also think of your break as an opportunity to strengthen your “resume”—no matter your age.

Grade School

Work on completing workbooks in writing, math, science, or any other subject you would like to improve on. Even if you only spend 15 minutes a day doing some worksheets, you will be farther ahead than the rest of your classmates. See how quickly you can complete math equations and have your friends quiz you on spelling. Set goals for yourself and see if you can hit them all. Try to read 15 books over the summer or memorize the entire periodic table!

Middle School

Utilize your summer to work on your technical skills to get ahead for the next year. If you’re interested in babysitting in the future, take a training course or CPR class. If you’re interested in learning more about the outdoors, go camping and practice survival tactics with someone who can teach you. Spend time talking to people of all different professions and learn about what they do. You may find yourself interested in something new that you had never considered before.

Consider giving more of your time to nonprofits and volunteering. If you are working on getting into college, this is a great way to show that you care about your community and give back to others. Find a nonprofit that interests you or supports a cause you feel strongly about and get involved with their outreach programs or initiatives. This will help build your resume and will come in handy when you are looking for a job. Even a few hours a week will set you apart from the pack.

Post High School

Deciding to go to school or to join the workforce is an important choice that will affect you for the rest of your life. It can be very stressful to try and find a job, so take your time in deciding where to apply and take any advice from those around you. See if you have any contacts that could help connect you to an employer. Applying to colleges is no small feat, either. Set aside plenty of time to work on applications for school as each one can easily take a few hours. Don’t skim over any of the information on colleges—it’s important you take the time to make a wise decision for your future.

UPCOMING EVENTS 9/21/2019 — RBR Buc Backer Foundation Day at the Races All family, friends, and alumni are welcome to attend this great event to support the Red Bank Regional Buc Backer Foundation! Boxing has risen to the top of these workouts in popularity but what makes boxing and H.I.I.T training so effective? And since not all programs are equal what are some things to watch out for? H.I.I.T has been proven through many peer-reviewed scientific studies to be incredibly effective at burning calories, improving cardio, lowering insulin levels, while toning and developing muscle. By Allison Merchant “A YACHT IS A HOME AWAY FROM HOME, while a smaller boat provides for family adventure,” said Bill Bergin, co-owner of Sandy Hook Yacht Sales. For 35 years, Bergin has helped thousands of families go on new adventures. Sandy Hook Yacht Sales has a large inventory of new and pre-owned family style boats, both sail and power, and is the only dealer of Sabre and Back Cove boats in New Jersey. The company’s main business is yacht brokerage. It sells boats for clients much like a realtor sells homes. “At Sandy Hook Yachts we are selling a lifestyle,” Bergin said. “Our clients work hard and play hard. They hope a boat will allow them time to relax and get away from their hectic professional lives.” Owning a boat enables families and friends with exponential opportunities of spending days filled with sunshine on the water. “It allows you to see the sunrise on the water whenever time permits. The only thing that can get in the way is the weather.” Bergin and his partner and co-founder, Hank Hartmann, opened for business in Sea Bright in

Bergin and his wife, Kate, live in Rumson and have been married for 38 years. Their three daughters are fully grown, all of whom graduated from Rumson Fair Haven High School. he fun doesn’t end when the first yellow leaf cascades to the ground, or the school bell rings. While living at the Jersey Shore isn’t an endless summer, it certainly is an extended one. So, let’s explore some of my favorite things to do when the crowds go home. If I were to plan the perfect day (or few hours) of fall fun, it would begin at Kranky’s Bike Shop on Bay Avenue in the Highlands. Now, you could take this little jaunt on foot or on a conventional bike (or car, no judgment) but why not go electric? Once strapped into your preferred mode of transportation, head on down to The Seafarer at the end of Atlantic Avenue. This bayside bar is a little piece of Bali located where The Clam Hut used to reside before Sandy blew it away. I’ve had to stop talking about this place to friends, as at some point it seemed like I might be a silent owner. One week we went three times, it’s a love affair. There are no signs advertising this bar/food truck establishment, just look for Bakers Marina. Where the old restaurant once stood is now a sand-filled oasis. When the beach shack doors are open,

MAKE MERRY

B i l l i e C r aw f o r d - M c N a l l y good times roll, slower on weeknights than the weekend. Grab a seat at the bar or under the teepee frame. Lay in the hammocks or settle into one of the eclectic collections of swing-back chairs or comfy couches to listen to The String Bean Band. The dock is a perfect place to watch storms roll into town or the sunset. Alas and alack, there is one caveat: the food. It’s a work in progress which I hope sorts itself out. We have yet to have a good meal here, although I can whole-heartedly recommend the corn on the cob, fresh off the grill, and the chips and guacamole. This is a kid and dog friendly establishment so bring the whole family. Onto the next part of our adventure. Saddle up and head to Trama’s at 1 Willow Avenue. Located at the former sight of a trailer park, Trama offers one of the best views of Sandy Hook and New York City. The indoor restaurant is absolutely gorgeous but leave it to experience during the colder months. While the sun still shines warmly, make your way to the outdoor deck. Call ahead to find out about music. Trama is known for its amazing food and rightly so. There is always the fear that once a

place goes big it loses its shine, but quite the opposite happened here. Have the lobster bisque, it’s so good you won’t want to share. Now to the exercise portion of our program. Mount up and head on down to the Henry Hudson Trail, kids, we are going to Atlantic Highlands. I have loved the trail since the beginning, missed it while they revamped after Sandy and love it even more now. As always, the Monmouth County Park System has outdone itself with this beautifully kept park. The trail runs 24 miles from Highland to Freehold along old rail lines. There is not a bad time to meander along the pathway as the scenery changes with the seasons. And here we are in Atlantic Highlands. This town has always been ultracool but never more so than now. There’s certainly no shortage of outstanding restaurants and places to grab a sweet treat (OK, Flaky Tart and Nicholas Ice Cream, you know who you are). Today we will stick to the newest kid on the block, The Atlantic House. They had me at the roof bar but kept me with the food and drink. Once the Memphis Pig Out,

Atlantic Highlands is all clean lines with a beach town feel. The food is delicious, the dessert even better, but it’s the open-air rooftop patio overlooking this quaint town and the harbor, that will bring you back. I look forward to their changing menu and commitment to using local and organic ingredients. The restaurant has roots in Asbury’s Biergarten but has a flare all its own. I’m back and looking forward bringing you along on some adventures: culinary and otherwise. he fun doesn’t end when the first yellow leaf cascades to the ground, or the school bell rings.

Eat, drink, and bike responsibly!  Billie is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from our April 2018 issue Family Feature! ON YOUR MARK

By Allison Merchant

S

ince he was the age of ten, Raymond Forbes knew he was meant to help people. He began that journey as a lifeguard for the Seven Presidents beach in Long Branch, where rescues are made every day. On August 26, he started his next chapter at the University of Wyoming with his training in the Reserve Officer Training Corps or ROTC. “I’ve always wanted to serve a higher purpose and serve my country. And protect the constitution of the United States of America,” said Raymond Forbes. He chose to attend college and study political science while training to be an officer in four years. Forbes aspires to enter military intelligence after graduation. “Military intelligence is more of the strategical side of the battlefield where soldiers work to identify enemies and how to go about deploying certain

troops and more of the intelligence sides rather than the physical boots on ground approach.” His pursuance of political science stems from a passion for political philosophy. The choice to attend a university in Wyoming was inspired by his love for nature and outdoor activities. “I’m looking forward to all the training and the environment honestly,” Forbes admitted. “The mountains, being in the outdoors 24/7, skiing, hiking, off-roading, shooting, hunting, fishing. The all-outdoor life.” Forbes attributes his enjoyment for being active in the environment and sports as inspired by his father Patrick Forbes. “I was so hyper as a kid, so he would have me working out all the time and he’s just been by my side, helping with college, getting through all the way with ROTC,” Forbes said. His childhood consisted of aspiring to

become one of the people he admired, those that served their country for the safety of others. “I think there’s just more of a wave of patriotism in younger people in this country. I always looked up to those types of people: Honorable people that serve their country. Good men that we lay peacefully in our beds at night because they’re out there doing work.” Forbes knows that at 18 it can be daunting to lay out the next ten or so years of your life. Things happen and people change. Yet he expressed there is a benefit to having that serious attitude when approaching his goals. It drives him each day and keeps his head held high for the future. “I only have my one shot in life to either sit around and dream about what I want to do or go out and suck it up and do whatever it takes to get what I want.”

RUN DON’T WALK! It’s back to school time which means the Little Silver PTO’s annual 5K is approaching. Sunday, October 6 will kick off the 26th year running, pun intended. Each year the race is held to raise money for the Little Silver schools Point Road and Markham Place. For 26 years the LSPTO has helped support the Little Silver school district to enable a remarkable education system that the community has prided itself over for many years. Little Silver encourages the enrichment of children through hands-on educational programs and the best tools possible for students to reach their highest potential. What better way to strive for greatness than with a strong stride?

igh School students from across the Peninsula visited the Chesapeake Bay area to participate in Tower Hill’s annual student mission trip June 30—July 6, 2019. This year’s team of volunteers consisted of 27 students and six adult leaders from Tower Hill Church, based in Red Bank, NJ. The Tower Hill team joined other youth teams from across the U.S. to participate in Group Mission Trips in Millersville, MD. There they worked to help area residents with home repairs. Group Mission Trips, a registered 501(c)(3), has been connecting youth volunteer teams with communities in need since the early 1990s. Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, the town of Millersville has a diverse population which includes retired veterans, retired auto and steel workers, and young families employed by the tech industries. Student volunteers painted and worked minor construction projects under supervision by adults. Examples of work done on previous trips includes building wheelchair ramps and handrails, weatherizing homes and trailers, interior and exterior carpentry, and other home repairs that the homeowner cannot complete. “This year, we doubled the size of our Student Mission team, with 27 student volunteers,” said Gerard Marrone, Director of Student Ministry at Tower Hill Church. “And even more impressive is that five of our six adult leaders have previously led our Tower Hill student trips and decided to take a week of vacation to lead again this year. This trip helps teen experience firsthand how helping people in need is an example of God’s love for us.” Tower Hill First Presbyterian Church is a place for all generations, located in the heart of Red Bank, NJ. Visit us Sunday mornings at 9am for traditional and 9am and 10:30am for contemporary. Kids programs are available Sunday mornings for infants through Grade eight, and on weekdays for Grades 4-12. For more info visit www.TowerHillChurch.org. To hear more about Tower Hill’s student programs, please contact Director of Student Ministry, Gerard Marrone at gerard@ towerhillchurch.org or call Tower Hill Church at (732) 747-1348.  23

igh School students from across the Peninsula visited the Chesapeake Bay area to participate in Tower Hill’s annual student mission trip June 30—July 6, 2019. To hear more about Tower Hill’s student programs, please contact Director of Student Ministry, Gerard Marrone at gerard@ towerhillchurch.org or call Tower Hill Church at (732) 747-1348.  23
