The GOLDFARBS’ By Allison Merchant
T
his is a story about adventure. It holds all the favorite elements of a classic piece: love, war, distant travels, poetry, and art. It succumbs to the persuasive powers of curiosity and coincidence. This story began with a nice spring day, 1852. Before entering the Army in 1972, Dr. Michael Goldfarb had already graduated from New York University’s School of Medicine in 1967 and completed a General Surgery Residency at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. Michael then served as the senior medical officer (Major), in the Shock Trauma Research and Wound Ballistics, Division in Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. During this time, he also operated on soldiers wounded in Vietnam, who needed further surgery. Michael was the principal investigator for the development of Kevlar soft body armor evaluation. “The original mission was to create a bullet proof sport coat for the FBI and other agencies.” Dr. Goldfarb helped establish the standard for “bullet proof body armor” for the Bureau of Standards and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. He remained a consultant to U.S. Army Wound Ballistics Division until 1990. He led the development of multiple surgical advances in technology and practice. He developed the Trauma Triage “CHOP” Index and the “Respiratory Index” to triage the injury response in patients. In 1973, he was a founding member of The American Trauma Society. Dr. Michael Goldfarb and Barbara Goldfarb decided to leave New York when he returned from his service in the army in 1974. Michael accepted a position as a surgeon with the Chief of Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center. From 2000-2014 he was Chief of Surgery and Residency Program Director. In his career he has operated on more than 20,000 patients and helped train more than 700 surgeons. He was the first surgeon to lead a team that performed the first laparascopic cholecystectomy in 1990, and was one of the founding members of the Wilenz Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center. He has been a Professor of Surgery through

Drexel University since 2006, holds many surgical device patents, and many publications. He was a Governor of the American College of Surgeons and belongs to many professional organizations. Michael has been listed as one of the “Top Doctors in New Jersey” in the New Jersey Monthly since 1998. Since December, he continues to operate at The Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center in Red Bank, NJ. Barbara and Michael shared a dream to live in a house on the water near a teaching hospital. They found their home on Little Silver Point Creek and never looked back. “We love antiques in our old house, and there aren’t too many houses that are older,” Michael said. The house was around 1845 and has many cherished quirks that reflect its antiquity. Inscribed on one of the bedroom’s windows is a remark about the nice spring day in 1852. The two have collected folk art that compliments the 1845 Greek revival architecture. Barbara, the owner of Design Logic, studied interior design at the New York School of Interior Design, after finishing a degree in Biology at Barnard. She has honed her skills with interior design, architecture, and green restoration. Her affinity for antiques prompted the founding of Monmouth Medical Center’s Two Rivers Antique Show in 1997, benefiting the Wilenz Breast Center. She also was one of the founders of The Childrens’ Museum at Brookdale College in 1978. “My mother was a teacher and she came from a family of teachers and professors, but I didn’t want to teach,” Barbara said. “Between design and education, I was interested in a way to educate people and children. Light bulbs went off in my head. I remember when I had the idea to do the Children’s Museum and I remember when I had the idea to do the antique show. It just happened. I asked friends if they would be interested in helping and that’s what we did.” In the beginning the Junior League funded the Children’s Museum for a few years, allowing it to take off. “Now it has about 50,000 a year attending and it’s funded by various state-wide organizations,” Barbara said. Presently, Barbara is a trustee on the board of the National Museum for Women in the Arts (NMWA,) since 1994. NMWA hosts an Little Silver Neighbors
international community that highlights both historical women artists and contemporary women artists. “Many of the artists in the permanent collection of NMWA were recognized in their own time but many of them were forgotten in history books, because men always wrote the history books,” Barbara elaborated. “For instance, [Élisabeth] Vigée Le Brun was a court painter to Marie Antoinette and Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana were also famous. There were many Italian women and French women who were fabulous painters but whose work was put in the basement of museums because they were not considered to be worthy artists.” NMWA commemorates contemporary women artists with many programs like Women to Watch. Every few years the organization works with major museums to display five contemporary women artists. “The women who are involved are just extraordinary. They are ambassadors, doctors, and artists; people from all over the world including France, Italy, England, Chile, India, Luxembourg, and Lichtenstein,” Barbara said. Art always had a prevalence in the Goldfarbs’ lives, even by pure coincidence. A trip to Egypt in 1983 sparked a longstanding friendship with Pop art sculptor George Segal. Michael and Barbara were travelling with their sons at the time who were 11 and 13. Once on a boat traversing the Nile, the question was raised whether a doctor was aboard because someone had been injured. “He [Segal] had fell in a hole in Edfu. He was carrying a very long lens, Nikon camera and he fell,” Barbara said. While Michael was operating on Segal’s elbow, he came to realize who he was treating. An immediate friendship sparked and a new muse met. “He liked my cheekbones,” Barbara explained.
She was asked to model for the artist after that Egyptian summer. All of the Goldfarbs were used as models at one time or another, one of the works being Abraham's Farewell to Ishmael (1987) that still resides in the Pérez Art Museum in Miami. Extra head castings from that piece were arranged into a totem pole and given to the Goldfarbs as a gift. Travel, art, and inspiration weave throughout the tapestry of the Goldfarb family time and again. Their most recent trip to Japan in 2016 struck inspiration for Michael and resulted in the creation of his new book, Japan Inscape, a compilation of Haiku and photography, both cherished hobbies Michael has practiced for many years. It all began with the reading of a fortune cookie his first night back in the United States. “The fortune cookie said: ‘you see pictures in poems and poems in pictures’,” Michael said. “And there I was in the restaurant and here is this message. So, I began to match certain photographs with certain poems.” He tried to create something that elicited the calmness experienced in Japan and an expression of gratitude to the people there. “And the real hook was, ‘what if I told you your views of the world around you could become happier and more complete by daydreaming along with photos and poems.” That’s what I think I’ve done; create a book that lets you get away and daydream very easily.” And though the Goldfarbs have traveled the world and experienced many of their daydreams, Little Silver has always been their home. “Little Silver has been perfect for us,” they said. “Our children grew up in the house on the water and became conscious of the beauty in nature and all of the birds and animals around us. Much of the town is walkable with excellent services and the town preserves a green and peaceful aura.”

The Jewel of the Monmouth County Park System
L
B y B i l l i e C r a w f o r d - M c N a l ly
et’s start the new year off right and make a resolution to get out to all the county parks in the next year. We have the good fortune to live a stone’s throw from some of the best parks in New Jersey, and I challenge you to collect and cherish them like the jewels that they are. Hands down my favorite and most visited is Hartshorne Woods and its varied trails. I have hiked them, biked them, boated to them, camped in them, experienced an earthquake while jumping into the river from a rope swing, used a certain path for a setting in my first novel, and loved them for years. My husband snapped his neck in them, my son perforated a kidney in them, and I had a pretty radical tiger claw scar from learning to mountain bike in them from the 90s (one of my first dates with my husband, AJ). So now I would like to share them with you and I hope you make them your own. This 736-acre park has 16 miles of trail. There are a few entrances to the park. Buttermilk Valley and Rocky Point and the newest, Claypit Creek. Claypit Creek is the smallest and easiest to explore. I would call this a walk in the park and not a hike. Great for fishing, crabbing and launching small vessels, it has picnic tables, and a sweet meadow for kids to romp. The old homestead has been torn down but there are some surviving out-buildings that will intrigue the little ones. If you are up for a little more of an adventure, Claypit Run meanders through a wetland with a dry path and bridges. This crosses Hartshorne Road and connects with the Buttermilk Valley section of the park. Buttermilk can also be accessed from Navesink Avenue, which is my preferred place to park. The trails are marked like ski runs.

Your Time. Your Dry Cleaners. Your Way Be ready for the cold this winter season!
The easier and shorter paths begin just at the entrance. These are perfect for tiring out the kids. The trails connect and loop, so you are never far from the car when little ones poop out. My favorite is Laurel Ridge. I have done this one so many times, but it always seems fresh. I did it backwards last week and it was a completely different experience. With the changing of the season, so changes the scenery. The summer offers a cool green canopy, sweet relief from the sun. The leafless trees of winter expose panoramic views of the Navesink River. This is a special spot to others as well. If you go left when leaving the parking lot, a few hundred feet up the trail, you will spy a miniture fairy village that has been quietly building over the last few months. It ebbs and flows with the rains, but I find new piece each time I pass. I won’t tell more, I want you to discover it for yourself. If you start your walk to the right, you will find a box with a notepad to write your musings. As I said, I am not the only lover of the woods. Laurel intersects with Grand Tour and Cuesta Ridge which both take you to Rocky Point. This circumference hill makes for an eight-mile looping hike, so be prepared for a time commitment. The Rock Point trails can also be accessed from a parking lot by the same name. This is located by Henry Hudson High School. You will find many more trail options here as well as incredible historic features. Plan time to study and explore these. The trails at Rocky Point are more varied. Battery Lewis is a short trail around an actual WWII battery, you can make your way to the Overlook as well. There is a tarmacked path, Battery Loop, which is a smooth jaunt, be sure to tie in a side trip down a steep path to the
pier to dip you toes in the Navesink when and if it’s every warm again. The walk back up the path is a bit of a bear but worth the effort. The longest and most arduous path is Rocky Ridge Trail. It is usually the path less traveled, by foot at least, which means keep an eye and your ear out for mountain bikers. If you find yourself at the dock at a low outgoing tide walk along the water line heading towards the ocean. You can walk to the boundary of the woods. It is an incredible way to experience the coast and not often accessible. There is a path up the hill which hooks up with Rocky Point, this leads back to the car park. I mentioned camping, there is one cabin in the woods. I camped here when I lead my son’s Boy Scout troop and counted myself blessed to have had the experience, although of course it rained. Call the main office about reserving this, it is a great way to introduce younger kids to camping without pitching a tent. Keep in mind it is rustic, aka, floor sleeping. As with any great love, one tends to prattle on. I have run out of space but never out of words for this great treasure in our backyard. I hope I have peaked your interest about the wonders you will uncover when discovering this jewel for yourself. Their family motto has always been to develop “strong roots and strong wings”. Both sons used their strong wings to take them to California. One currently works at Tusker Medical and developed a new invention for otitis media in young children, where ear tubes are inserted under local anesthesia. The other son has concentrated on the digital world and is the Vice President of Products, eCommerce, and Consumer Engagement at GoDaddy. “It was a very conscious decision to take the children with us [travelling],” Barbara said. “Because having grown up in New York City ourselves, we realized we were living in a bubble. We wanted our children to understand that this was not representative of the real world. And so, from a very early age we travelled all over the world with them.” Together the family saw China, Egypt, Mexico, Israel, France, Italy, England, Galapagos, the Caribbean, and Canada. They explored China in 1991 when it was transitioning from the old world to the new. They witnessed a transformative, peaceful time in Egypt in 1983. “I really wanted them to understand that they were privileged to see that and to make it a part of their lives in some way,” Barbara elaborated. “And I think they became citizens of the world in that way. Their world view changed from just being exposed to Little Silver, Rumson, and the beach.” Since 1975, this town has been the only year-round home for the Goldfarbs. “We have relished our wonderful days and nights at our home that we have shared with family, friends, and dogs,” they said. “We have seen many places in the world, so we know how special Little Silver is, and never take it for granted. Every time we return home, we realize how beautiful it is at our home, and how lucky we are.”

CRM — Customer Relationship Management is a technology that businesses use for managing all your company's relationships and interactions among various teams within the company as well as customers and potential customers. A good CRM serves many purposes, but most importantly as the central point of reference for incoming and ongoing business. As a company who actively develops, customizes, and deploys CRM solutions for our clients, we are constantly working on newer technologies to support new features and possibilities that were not an option until now. For most businesses, new potential clients (leads) are acquired from several sources including, but not limited to, website signups, social media campaigns, sales teams, referrals, etc. Without a CRM in place, it becomes very hectic and hard to manage all the information. Once you have a CRM integrated properly, all the sources add potential customers in one place, where your sales team can get to work and start selling your products or services. Each customer file becomes an entity in itself, and teams can share notes, comments and also communicate with the customers with active notifications or requests to send any required information or documents. Advances in technology is taking CRM into a totally different level with the inclusion of Artificial Intelligence-based modules like self-learning systems for customer support or lead assignments. These technologies make the business processes smooth and seamless for
their employees. As the data grows and moves through the system, patterns are established that help the CRM improve itself in terms of performance and productivity. Most businesses can take advantage of CRM and similar technologies to some extent. Some companies however, depend on the customer relationship management systems a lot. Service industries, for example, can use the technology that allows them to handle incoming business calls, schedule appointments, manage billing and payments, and get reviews for their work. A real estate company using a CRM allows any interested customers to show interest in a particular home or commercial property by sending a text message to a number posted outside the real estate for sale. The CRM then adds the potential customer into the system as a lead, notes down which property they are interested in, and responds back to the sender with more details about the property (price, open house dates, MLS listing, etc), and on the backend assigns this lead to the agent responsible for the real estate who can then get in touch with the sender to discuss further details and schedule a meeting. In the above scenario, the agent would usually suggest other similar properties that are for sale. And depending on how things work, the customer decides to buy. Once that happens, the agent changes the status of the lead which initiates the contract to be signed by both parties and goes from agent to legal and then finance. Moving in the CRM from one status to another, more and more departments
get involved streamlining the process to schedule meetings, appointments, calls, get paperwork together, and finally mark the sale as completed. After which also, a CRM allows the company to keep in touch with the customers and enroll them into referral programs which helps the business get more leads and so on. Even though customer relationship management systems are not looked upon as automation, they do help a lot in getting things organized, and have been proven to: increase productivity of a business and its employees, keep data centralized that makes it easy to back up, and adds a whole new level of transparency with most of the communication between the business/customers taking place on the CRM platform thus making it easier for senior managers to identify any problems as and when it happens.
Our company has developed many CRM solutions for our clients. Wreaths Across America Comes to Little Silver By Allison Merchant It began with an image. A staggered pattern of pine green wreaths with hand-tied red bows resting gently against individual headstones where the marbled gray in the sun reflected even brighter from the white dust of snow on the ground. It was an image that spoke more than a thousand words and held thousands of stories. It was created during the quietness of December, slipped in between the year-end distractions like a soft smile. Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when the Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine had a surplus of wreaths nearing the end of the holiday season. The owner, Morrill Worcester, remembered his trip at the age of the 12 to the Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. and the impression it had left with him all those years ago. With the help of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, Worcester sent his surplus wreaths to be placed in one of the older sections that had fewer visitors each year. Worcester gained support and help from James Prout, owner of local trucking company Blue Bird Ranch, Inc., who provided transportation all the way to Virginia. Volunteers from the local American Legion and VFW Posts gathered with members of the community to decorate each wreath with traditional red, hand-tied bows. Members of the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C. helped to organize the wreath-laying, which included a special ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
This began a quiet tradition for many years until the image described above was taken and put onto the Internet in 2005. It began a national sensation and volunteers rushed to participate in their own states and towns. It is known as National Wreaths Across America Day of Remembrance. Last month Little Silver hosted its own Remembrance Ceremony on Saturday, December 15. Our own resident, Patricia McDerby hosted as Location Site Coordinator, bringing the event to Little Silver Memorial Park. “The way I got involved with it was my brother [Captain Thomas McDerby] is buried in Arlington, he was an air force pilot with an accident in panama,” McDerby explained. “Every year we [her family] would go down there and see wreaths but didn’t know anything about it.” When she learned of the meaning behind the wreaths, McDerby knew she wanted to become involved. “You think about Christmastime and you get so hung up on gifts and all that and you think, ‘who doesn’t want to give 15 dollars to have someone place a wreath on a loved one’s gravesite?’” With the help of Mayor Neff and Rick Brandt, McDerby was able to have the seven wreaths laid in Memorial Park. Each wreath, donated by the organization, is dedicated the six different branches of the Military and one for the POWs/MIAs. The year of 2018 was represented by the theme: Be Their Witness.

On November 2, Point Road School hosted its 12th annual Celebrating Different Learners Abilities Day for third grade students. The event was created to educate students about disabilities as well as to help raise awareness and acceptance of individual differences. The third grade classes rotated through five rooms where they learned about different disabilities. In each room, the students participated in hands-on activities designed to give them a glimpse of what it would be like to live with a particular disability. The disabilities featured included physical, learning, developmental, hearing, and vision. The day was organized by School Counselor Julie Ford and Parent Coordinator Dianne DiYanni. A special thanks to all of the parent volunteers, the Little Silver PTO, Friends of Different Learners, and the third grade teachers who continue to make Celebrating Different Learning Abilities Day such a success.

TALENTED ROCKSTARS
They have even played benefit concerts to support local organizations. No matter where they have taken the stage, they have always risen to the occasion. The boys are now in the fifth grade at Markham Place School and continue to find time to master their musical talents by practicing regularly which they know is the key to getting better. Lazewski is the band’s bass player, Terill is the lead singer, Gervais is on guitar and Ferrigno crushes it on the drums. These boys are an allstar team! What makes this band so great is that they are each amazing individuals who excel in sports, scouts, the classroom, and find time to routinely volunteer to help others. These boys have not signed a record label yet and do not have a manager. To hire them for an event they can be reached through their parents, also known as their “mom-and-dad-agers” who handle their booking schedules and prepare their school lunches each day. Maybe some day Little Silver’s LSP will join the ranks of Springsteen and Bon Jovi, but for now, they are going to keep having fun and being kids!

onmouth County is home to some of the greatest rockstars in the world — Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. Both iconic legends began their careers at young ages and perfected their skills to go on to top the charts with world #1 hit after hit after hit. Like Springsteen and Bon Jovi, there are four local boys starting their musical careers early. Chris Lazewski, Jackson Terrill, Jackson Gervais, and Xander Ferrigno may not have sold out Madison Square Garden yet, but they are sure on their way! These boys call themselves LSP and they have been playing music together since they were 9-years-old. The boys began taking lessons at School of Rock in Red Bank when they were in the third grade and shortly thereafter began preforming at local restaurants in Long Branch and Red Bank on early Sunday afternoons. This group has dazzled the crowds at Point Road and Markham Place School talent shows in Little Silver. They left thousands of spectators speechless at A Taste of Little Silver and Little Silver Day!

pecial occasion or just wanting to shine, we all have those days on the calendar where looking our best is crucial! I know the feeling comes up for me before a big sales presentation or when I am attending an event with my husband’s clients. I need to feel as "polished" as possible without looking like I tried too hard. And yes, with no time because my 10-month-old is on the move!
My 24-hour routine before the event: Day before — I stick to eating mostly fruits vegetables with lean proteins like chicken or low mercury fish. I drink lots of water, at least a gallon plus! I go for a good workout: cardio for at least 30 minutes and yoga or sculpting class at some point in my day. Night before — Shower and exfoliate before bed and I use an organic moisturizing self-tanning lotion, my pick is Chocolate Sun for fair skin. It is unbelievably moisturizing and creates natural color without any streaks or orange hands. It's organic and natural as I am a stickler for natural stuff on my skin. Your skin is your largest organ in your body, it absorbs everything!
I exfoliate my face with Clarisonic and use Chocolate Sun selftanning lotion for the face. Make sure you wipe the palms of your hands and feet, nail beds, and under nails with a baby wipe to just make sure no extra lotion is sitting there to create unsightly color where you don't want it. If you are in NYC, and want a healthy glow, call Vincent at demandatan.com. It is so reasonable priced, and he uses a great organic solution for their spray tans. I let the tan set through the night and sleep. Tip: I have found this helpful because I sleep on my hands, wear cotton gloves during sleep after tanning lotion or spray tan so you don't darken your hands by laying on them as I have done in past. I polish my teeth with either a crest white strip or I will say that since using my Tfeesstraws, I have not needed to bleach at all in more two years! Just saying…. I have a huge mop of hair, so I find it best to wash and blow dry my hair the night before. Professionals say your hair styles best when it has some of its own natural oils in it and my hair always looks better next day after wash and blow. Morning of special day or event — I shower off the tanning lotion with just water, no soap and moisturize with a light oil like coconut oil when my skin is still wet. Yes, I wash with a mild body wash for private
parts, feet, and armpits—just because I think you should. I set my hair in hot rollers, not fancy just chunks of hair around the roller, in any direction. I use the fat rollers to give some volume and smoothness. I spray with a finishing spray while rollers are in. I am a big fan of Caviar products because they are not outrageously priced and they are great for even thick hair. I get dressed and do my makeup. I keep it simple: tinted moisturizer, curl lashes and mascara, nude lip liner, fill in the lips, and coat with gloss. Huge fan of Mac and Josie Maran cosmetics. Josie Maran bronzer blush is perfect for the face after using self-tanner. Add color but not an obnoxious amount, just enough to look smooth and sun kissed. If your skin already has beautiful color, use a great moisturizer with shimmer like Burt’s Bees. I wear a dress or suit that makes me feel strong and stylish, usually black, gray or bone. The shoe is the finisher! Keep it simple and enjoy feeling good and looking good. Tammi is a resident of Little Silver and you might recognize her from one of our Family Features.
