PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE Albert Einstein said, "Strive not to be a success but rather to be of value." His words really speak to me and are the way I believe our entire company operates. Therefore, it’s only fitting that one of our newest offerings, Relativity by Troy Lighting, has the scribblings of Einstein’s genius theories written all over it. (And have you noticed that each piece has a sketch of him within the scribbles?) As we head into summer, it’s nice to look ahead and relish in the success Littman Brands has shared across all our lighting collections. With our passion for design as our guiding force, we continue to provide the highest quality lighting in our industry and are supported by a dedicated team that is the backbone of our company’s success. Using premium materials to manufacture our lighting, recognizing our valuable dealer partners who are instrumental in representing our fixtures, and honoring the loyal customers and designers who choose our lighting – that is the Littman Brands way. In this issue of Larger than Light, we are proud to share two new exciting installations that incorporate several of our most exciting brands. We were fortunate to have many of Hudson Valley Lighting®’s beautiful products in the 49th annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design, one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. The Pasadena Showcase House of Design is part of the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, a non-profit organization established in 1948, which has awarded 18 million dollars in gifts and grants to support nonprofit organizations and local symphonic, cultural and musically oriented educational programs for youth. The Pasadena Showcase House of Design’s kitchen and butler’s rooms, designed by Saxony Design Guild, used Hudson Valley Lighting as their inspiration. First, three Massena pendants were hung over the centerpiece island with pewter countertop, making a bold and dramatic statement. Next, the Heirloom pendants and sconces brought a cool, industrial look to the space, the Quinton candelabra pendants created a classic look in the butler’s pantry and finally the beautiful Jasper chandelier provided an elegant, historic look over the kitchen table. Designer Joshua Cain spoke to us in more detail about the entire collaboration as well as his use of Hudson Valley Lighting in his designs for more than a decade. And to increase our visibility in the mainstream and fashion world, Corbett Lighting’s fashion-forward Inertia fixtures are the focal point of the new Kardashian family DASH store, one of their boutiques located in the hip designer’s hot spot of Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Celebrity designer Jeff Andrews spoke with us about his design inspiration and how "lighting is everything." In the upcoming pages, you will see how Inertia truly takes over the DASH store. As shoppers walk or drive by, they can admire the enormous eye-catching Inertia fixture – even from across the street. This is an exciting time for Littman Brands as Hudson Valley Lighting, Corbett Lighting, Troy Lighting and CSL forge ahead and gain momentum as we grow as a company and as individuals. We look forward to your continuous enthusiasm and feedback in the next few months. Until next time, be well. David Littman Publisher/CEO of Littman Brands

Bright Ideas

Three trends that keep enlightening designers this season

Go Glam

Kimberly Ward, Interior Designer Kimberly and Cameron, Atlanta, GA www.kimberlyandcameron.com "Bringing glamour into the home is a huge movement right now. I love Pawling and the glamorous look it adds to any space. This sconce is great for bathrooms and bedrooms, but I think it would be especially beautiful flanking a piece of art in a dressing room."

Flatiron by Troy Lighting Hand-worked wrought iron and a weathered bronze finish make up this modern take on medieval design

Wake Up Call

Pawling by Hudson Valley Lighting® Looping metal scrollwork and a simple shade create a luxurious look that’s lighter than air

Brandon A Smith, LEED AP D-Scoop, San Diego, CA www.dcoopmedia.com "Active spaces demand equally active lighting. Nothing brings the mood down more than a drab, ho-hum light fixture. Inertia, with it’s Atomic Era personality, is an intense shot of energy wrapped up in an explosion of crystal and polished stainless steel. Think of it as the disco ball all grown up."

A Seamless Blend

Lynne Bier, Principal/Lead Designer Home on the Range Interiors, Steamboat Springs, CO www.homeontherangeinteriors.com "Flatiron is the perfect transitional fixture - it creates a circle of light big enough to encompass a variety of styles and settings. I love the way it updates a rustic living room, adds a point of interest to a traditional space and blends seamlessly into a contemporary setting."

ith its own pub, shopping tent and restaurant, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design is not your ordinary showhouse. Residing on 1.79 acres of property in Arcadia, California, this remarkable house isn’t just a place for designers to showcase their talents – it’s also a charitable cause. As an all-volunteer organization, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts produces the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design to raise funding for music programs. It is one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. Over $18 million in gifts and grants have been raised to support the arts and provide opportunities for over 350,000 young people to discover, study and enjoy music.

Designer Joshua Cain

This year’s 49th annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design has a rich history. The original house was designed by renowned Southern Californian architect Roland Eli Coate, Sr. and recalls buildings of early California. Known for his Monterey California style, his designs create a sense of unity, flow and simplicity that mark the region’s heritage. The house exhibits Colonial Revival features, including rustic brick walls, a low-slung shingled roof, simple casement windows and wrought-iron details. Dozens of talented designers took up the task of transforming the showhouse’s many rooms, but perhaps the biggest transformation was done by the Saxony Design Build. Founded by interior designer Joshua Cain and general contractor Jeff Godbold, this Los Angeles based interior design firm has provided remodels and full service design since 1989. They took on the task of updating the antiquated kitchen and butler’s pantry into a larger space to better complement the scale of the original architecture. "I have a reverence for historic structures, and the majority of my work is in older homes," says Saxony Design Build designer Joshua Cain. "My inspiration for almost anything comes from historic references and details from the architectural style of the home." The kitchen underwent a major renovation, combining what were originally four smaller spaces into a 920 sq. ft. space. "In the original plans for the home, these spaces were a large butler’s pantry, a small kitchen, a hallway, a maid’s dining room and a service porch, which were designed as the service wing for 1940s function only. Removing all of the walls and restructuring the rooms to create one large kitchen was a huge task." After the structural overhaul was completed, Cain tackled his next challenge. "This house is a 1940s Monterey Colonial but had very little in the way of interior architectural detail," says Cain. "I tried to bring in a more late-30s feel to the new kitchen to add some historic charm that I felt the house was missing." The result was a transitional take on the classic Monterey Colonial look. A neutral color palette of black, white and tan and historic nickel fixtures play backdrop to the luxurious details. Checkerboard marble and limestone flooring highlights the detailed cabinetry and millwork in addition to the pewter-covered islands and the Silestone® quartz countertops. A French limestone hood and a handmade decorative tile back-splash adds unmatched flair. Exquisite fabrics and antiques round out the space, which includes a coffee bar, several pantries and commercial grade appliances. "The overall style is a cleaned up, simplified traditional look," says Cain. "Absolutely classic." Saxony Design Build reduced the butler’s pantry to create more space for the kitchen. The space was designed to be used in a very traditional fashion – to store china, linens and kitchen overflow and provide space for buffets during parties. The new space features antique glass doors, cabinets lit from the inside and historic nickel ceiling fixtures. The same flooring and style of cabinetry from the kitchen carries into the space to create continuity between the two rooms.

Cain chose Hudson Valley Lighting’s Heirloom pendants for turn-of-thecentury style

Saxony Design Build reduced the butler’s pantry to create more space for the new kitchen

To light up these elegant spaces, Cain chose designs from Hudson Valley Lighting®. "I’ve specified Hudson Valley Lighting for years… probably close to a decade," says Cain. "I knew right away that I would love to use them for this space because of the historic qualities that a lot of the fixtures represent." For the revamped butler’s pantry, Cain chose two Quinton 3-light candelabra pendants. The unique ring-and-rod suspension chains enhance the design’s streamlined features, creating a classic look. Inspired by the large kitchens and turn-of-the-century industrial style of the Biltmore Mansion, Cain brought in Hudson Valley Lighting’s Heirloom sconces and pendants to the kitchen. "I really wanted to

LA RGE R T HA N LIGHT | SUMMER

Hudson Valley Lighting’s Jasper chandelier adds traditional elegance above the kitchen table

bring some of that classic industrial charm into my space." To further his vision, Cain chose three white Massena pendants to hang over the main kitchen island. "Scale played a huge factor. The cabinetry is about 50 inches by 150 inches, so I needed to make a big statement on top of it. I needed something that was not only large but dramatic and interesting as well." He chose Hudson Valley Lighting’s Jasper chandelier to hang over the kitchen table. "The historic pewter finish with the black shades gave me the elegance that I wanted, while the deep, low arms of the chandelier kept it very traditional looking so it wasn’t out of place." As a result, Jasper creates a classic look with unexpected drama. These elegant additions make the Saxony Design Build’s stunning transformation shine even brighter.

eff Andrews is no stranger to luxury design. With celebrity clientele like Ryan Seacrest, Michael C. Hall and the Kardashian family, among others, he’s known for bringing warmth and livability to his high-end spaces. While some designers create beautiful rooms that feel more like museums than livable spaces, Andrews infuses his bold design concepts with warmth to create a comfortable living environment. His innovative work combines different genres and styles with expert artistry and balance. With designs all around the world, his work has been internationally recognized in top design magazines, books and on television. Andrews was recognized on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of “25 Most Influential Interior Designers” in October 2012. Getting his start as a choreographer/director, Andrews transitioned to interior design more than a decade ago. One of his first celebrity clients was Eleanor Mondale, TV host and daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale. Inspired by Andrews’ style, she sought him to work on her home, eventually completing four other projects with 18

him. Through word of mouth, Andrews began attracting other big name clients to his business. In 2010, Andrews began working with “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” stars Kris Jenner and her husband Bruce Jenner to renovate their new home. His work was unveiled on their show and seen by fans in more than 140 countries. In 2012, Andrews was commissioned by the Kardashian family to design one of their new DASH boutiques in the hip designer hot spot of Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Perfectly suited for celebrity style, Andrews chose Corbett Lighting’s fashionable Inertia pendants to add even more glamour to the upscale space. Inertia is the focal point of DASH, creating a commanding presence and increasing Littman Brands’ visibility in the mainstream and fashion world. As shoppers walk or drive by, they can admire the enormous eye-catching fixture, even from across the street. Andrews’ stunning results are sure to be replicated as he begins work on the new DASH Miami location.

DESIGNER Q+A

JEFF’S LIGHTING PICKS:

Designer Jeff Andrews unveils his bold approach to celebrity style Your style has been described as “innovative, bold and confident.” How would you describe your style? Creative, luxurious, livable. You design for a long roster of celebrity clientele. How did you get involved with the Kardashians? I was referred to the Kardashians by Ryan Seacrest, who I was originally recommended to by a very good friend. Word of mouth is everything. What is your first inspiration when designing a client’s space — is it a piece of art, furniture, etc.? My inspiration generally comes directly from listening to my client. Creatively I am inspired by fabric, color and texture.

Designer Jeff Andrews

Menlo Park by Troy Lighting “I love the modern, yet vintage and slightly industrial feel of these chandeliers and sconces. They would work well in a dining room or game room.

What’s your favorite part of designing? What’s the most challenging? My favorite parts are the creative rush at the beginning and my sense of completion at the end. The challenging parts are everything in between – especially lead times vs. deadlines.

Describe your dream client and dream room. A dream client is one who loves to collaborate yet one who has complete trust in my sense of style and capabilities. What inspired your design for DASH? How would you describe the style? The [Kardashian] Girls wanted a space that was clean, modern, fresh and uncluttered. The style is minimal and chic with a glamorous edge. Corbett Lighting’s Inertia is the focal point of the space, commanding great attention. What drew you to this fixture? Exactly that – the bold sculptural shape, sparkling qualities and overall retro vibe, which seem totally current in a modern space like DASH.

Tattoo by Troy Lighting “Edgy, sculptural and chic. I would love to put several down a very long hallway.”

How does lighting factor into the ambiance you’re trying to create? Lighting is everything! Statement pieces can not only dress a room or set the tone, but actually "make" a room. Do you find yourself drawn to certain types or styles of lighting fixtures? I love many periods and styles of lighting and frequently mix several different types of pieces into one space. From Art Deco chandeliers and sconces to vintage industrial factory lighting, to rock crystal chandeliers…it’s all in the mix. What are some lighting or design trends you’ve noticed recently? What’s the next big thing? For me, the next big thing is rock crystal – chandeliers, sconces, pendants and candelabras… I find myself drawn to the organic elegance of this semi-precious gemstone and how it illuminates. I’m also obsessed with hand-blown glass globes and have been recently incorporating them into some of my own custom lighting designs. If you could give one piece of advice to our readers about lighting, what would it be? Use a lot of ambient light sources on dimmers; avoid overhead recessed lighting whenever possible. LA RGE R T HA N LIGHT | SUMMER

Amadeus by Corbett Lighting “It’s so classically beautiful without looking like something from a stuffy old parlor. I would use this in a bathroom or over a big island in a woman’s walk-in closet.”

FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR How showrooms across the country are brightening up their Littman Brands displays With home renovations on the rise as the economy continues to improve, the lighting showroom has become more important than ever for engaging customers and increasing sales. The showroom is the place where customers are inspired by the light they want and envision it in their own home. It’s where the details and fine craftsmanship of the fixtures come to life and can be seen up close. However, without the proper presentation, these designs can go unnoticed and make it difficult for customers to find what they’re looking for. Across the country, showrooms are using creative merchandising in their Littman Brands displays to help customers find their dream light.

Meletio Lighting & Electrical Supply (www.meletio.com) in Dallas, Texas has been selling Littman Brands for over 25 years. "Their beautiful trend-forward designs inspired us to display them as pieces of art, as you would see them in a gallery or museum," says Tim Stumm, Vice President of Marketing and Showroom Operations. "Not all clumped together, but rather in a thoughtful story of design." For creating the most effective displays, Stumm believes it’s important to make them as eye-catching as possible. "Make it memorable and make it stand out. Just like publishers try to grab your attention with bold covers on their magazines, try and create that moment of ‘wow’."

Uni-Lite Lighting (www.unilitelighting.com) in Anaheim, California, has been brightening residential and commercial spaces for over 35 years. "We have a couple different displays because the feelings are distinctly different between the Littman Brands," says Justin Bryant, Manager and Buyer for Uni-Lite. While Hudson Valley Lighting®’s display features wainscoting over dark blue to create a coastal look, Troy Lighting’s display is set up with burlap fabric and wood trimming to give it a more rustic feel. "It’s kind of the feeling of the house that it would normally go into," says Bryant. "I think it’s important to make it feel like a person’s home so they can envision it in their own house."

Stumm also believes buying at a showroom can help the customer make a confident decision. "Most customers have a fear of making the wrong choice when it comes to scale and colors. Online might be a good place to start their research, but ultimately they will need to go to a professional brick and mortar store to resolve those fears." Brian Wilson, Vice President of Wilson Lighting (www.wilsonlighting.com) in Naples, Florida also believes the showroom experience is essential. "It is invaluable for the customer to see the product in person," says Wilson. "The finish, scale and overall feel cannot be replicated in a catalog or via the web."

The Hudson Valley Lighting® gallery at Yale Appliance & Lighting covers 600 sq. ft. of showroom floor

Robert Joyce, the Lighting Sales Manager of Yale Appliance & Lighting (www.yaleappliance.com) in Dorchester, Massachusetts, has noticed an increase in sales since dividing the 9000 sq. ft. lighting showroom into individual galleries. "This allows the products to be displayed showing different finishes with a larger selection from each brand," says Joyce. The 600 sq. ft. Hudson Valley Lighting gallery boasts 168 different pieces lining the walls and ceiling for a truly encompassing experience. Like Bryant, he feels it’s important to create a sense of home, which is why he has lights set in actual living kitchens. "This helps the customer visualize what the fixture will look like in the final installation,” says Joyce. "It allows the customer to make a better decision." 20

LA RGE R T HA N LIGHT | SUMMER

The Corbett Lighting display at Wilson Lighting in Naples, Florida. “We display the products in lifestyle vignettes, which allow all the products to complement each other,” says VP Brian Wilson

Another important element of creative merchandising is showing off the latest trends. Nearly everyone agreed that LED lighting is the future in residential lighting. Customers are also seeking out more minimalist designs with cleaner lines. "Customers still want a traditional chandelier, but they don’t want leaves or resin cups on it," says Bryant. Stumm adds that “industrial chic” has become a popular look, which is why the Meletio showroom features several sizes of lanterns, leather sofas and distressed wood tables in this style. No matter what look is in fashion, the right creative merchandising is essential for providing customers with the best Littman Brands experience possible on the showroom floor.

Project: The Algonquin Hotel Location: New York, NY Design Credit: Susan Caruso of Intra-Spec Hospitality Design Photography: Antonio Cuellar

A Gathering Place for Luminaries How Troy Lighting Contract Hospitality is updating a NYC landmark while keeping its rich history alive With a red brick and limestone façade, the illustrious Algonquin hotel has stood as New York City’s premier gathering place for literary and theatrical luminaries since opening its doors in 1902. Located in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, this cultural landmark retains the Edwardian luster and splendor of a bygone era – boasting a rich and storied history of luxury and elegance – while keeping current with the modern comforts of today. At the turn of the century, the Algonquin opened in its fashionable Midtown neighborhood just footsteps from New York’s thriving cultural scene. Fascinated with actors and writers, the hotel manager (and late owner) Frank Case envisioned the Algonquin as the epicenter of New York’s literary and theatrical life. Across the street from the Hippodrome Theatre in addition to some of the most popular restaurants and clubs of the day, the Algonquin quickly became known for attracting notable visitors. 22

LA RGE R T HA N LIGHT | SUMMER

Such luminaries as Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. and John Barrymore were frequent guests. As the first leading New York City hotel to accommodate single female travelers, it attracted notable women like Gertrude Stein, Simone de Beauvoir and Maya Angelou. Even Nobel laureates visited, including Sinclair Lewis and William Faulkner, who penned his acceptance speech in his hotel suite in 1950. Favored by twenty-something writers who set the standard for literary style, the famed Algonquin Round Table served as a daily meeting spot for literary and artistic visionaries. Members included playwright George S. Kaufman, critic Alexander Woollcott and writer Dorothy Parker among others. Besides founding The New Yorker magazine, which is given complimentary to each guest, the words of these witty and influential members are still repeated today.

2 01 3

| LI TTMAN BRAN DS.COM

The Algonquin was designated a New York City landmark in 1987 and a literary landmark in 1996. The legendary hotel has continued to evolve through a series of renovations to keep its original spirit alive while adding more contemporary features. As part of a recent renovation, Troy Lighting Contract Hospitality was called upon to create custom lighting fixtures for the hotel’s lobby, lounge and guest rooms. "It was important for us to retain and enhance the rich history and beautiful architectural structure of the Algonquin while also bringing in a sense of modernity," said Susan Caruso, president of Intra-Spec Hospitality Design— the interior design firm working on the hotel’s renovation. "Troy Lighting Contract Hospitality’s lighting was a large factor in helping us strike the necessary balance in public spaces." For the lobby, Troy crafted sconces with cascading crystal features and chandeliers with sculptural metal accents in polished nickel. The designs give a subtle nod to early 20th century chic and set off the deep wood tones of the hotel’s existing woodwork. The Blue Bar now features cobalt blue colored, ring-shaped LED pendants and a back wall with blue LED strip lighting radiating through clear fluted glass tubes. The pieces use LED engineering and technology from Troy’s sister company CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting).

From top: Wall of light with clear fluted glass tubes in the Blue Bar

The Algonquin’s corridors and guest baths were a particular challenge to illuminate due to the size restrictions of the building, said Caruso. To meet the challenge, Troy Lighting Contract Hospitality called in the Fulton lighting fixture from sister company Hudson Valley Lighting® Contract. The customized piece, done in polished nickel and mounted horizontally in guest baths, proved to be a perfect and elegant fit for this legendary hotel. LA RGE R T HA N LIGHT | SUMMER
