GIVING BACK WITH STYLE AT THE HAMPTON DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE

PUBLISHER’S MESSAGE It’s time again for our winter issue of Larger Than Light magazine and we couldn’t be more excited. It’s been a phenomenal year, and we are thankful for the commitment from our incredible family at Littman Brands as well as our partners at the showroom, distributor, architect and designer level. As we move into 2014, we look forward to introducing our amazing collections which incorporate the latest LED technology, unique materials and innovative designs. Littman Brands not only envisions the most sought after trends in interior design, art and fashion – we are the trendsetters. A number of our newest collections elicit warmth and celebration. Corbett Lighting will debut Party All Night, a lively chandelier filled with martini, wine and cognac glasses and Troy Lighting will introduce 121 Main, a unique chandelier created using three original beer bottles. Also from Troy, Barista, a wake-up call with three different types of coffee cups adorned with crystal drops, and the Dine ‘N’ Dash series of whimsical pendants in hand-worked wrought iron featuring both embossed and laser cut words tied to the food and dining experience. In addition to these festive designs, the industrial chic trend continues to influence collections across all brands. Hudson Valley Lighting is introducing Meridian, a collection of sconces featuring exposed, over-sized carbon filament bulbs shielded by curved, laser-cut screens. Our lighting also continues to incorporate the latest energy efficient technologies including new improved capabilities from CSL (Creative Systems Lighting) – and new designs with LED advancements across all brands.

Party All Night by Corbett Lighting

In this issue of Larger Than Light, we are proud to share some recent installations and contributions that incorporate several of our most exciting brands. First, we participated in the Hampton Designer Showhouse, which took place this past summer. Sponsored by Traditional Home magazine and benefiting Southampton Hospital, the showhouse worked with a number of top design firms to create stunning rooms, many of which featured our spectacular lighting. Hudson Valley Lighting provided signature pieces in five rooms, and stand-out pieces from Corbett Lighting and Troy Lighting were also used as main focal points. Look for the feature in Traditional Home magazine in April 2014. Littman Brands also recently donated fixtures to the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island’s renovation project, called Project Design 2013. Hudson Valley provided 28 Trumbull fixtures throughout the entire first floor – illuminating the hallways leading to guests’ bedrooms. In addition, Corbett Lighting donated two Poetry sconces, which greet visitors in the entry. We were happy to continue Littman Brands’ initiative to provide assistance to those in need. Another year has come and gone, and it’s been a rewarding journey. Thank you for a fantastic 2013 and for laying the groundwork for an even more fulfilling 2014. Until next time, be well. David Littman Publisher/Chairman of Littman Brands

“Call it universal design or social sustainability, but design in the 21st century is all about the total human experience. As the trend toward ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant lighting grows, we are seeing more functional and beautiful fixtures that can be used in any project. I love Corbett Lighting’s Method three-light ADA sconce. It’s stylish, contemporary, sophisticated and fun.”

“One of my favorite trends right now is the simple elegance and ease of using outdoor garden urns, furniture and lighting fixtures inside the home. I love Troy Lighting’s Nantucket. “Classically elegant and versatile, the Ulster pendant by Hudson Valley Lighting is an ideal fixture for a spacious foyer, dramatic hallway or gourmet kitchen. Its soft curves and multiple candle lights provide a subtle sparkle, which highlights the unexpected detail of a crystal finial at the bottom of the fixture. A little extra bling goes a long way.”

PROJECT DESIGN 2013 Lighting up the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island

Hudson Valley Lighting® and Corbett Lighting were proud to participate in the renovation of the Ronald McDonald House in Long Island, New York (RMH-LI), a respite for seriously ill children undergoing treatment at area hospitals, as well as their families. As part of the RMH-LI renovation initiative, called Project Design 2013, Hudson Valley Lighting provided 28 of their Trumbull fixtures throughout the entire Trumbull fixtures by Hudson Valley first floor – illuminating the hallways Lighting® light up the hallway leading to the bedrooms. In addition, Corbett Lighting donated two of their beautiful Poetry sconces for the entry. Littman Brands was honored to work with Anthony Baratta of Anthony Baratta LLC, who served as lead design chair and sponsor.

Dine ‘n’ Dash by Troy Lighting

An enormous undertaking, the original 18 bedrooms of the House along with the kitchen, breakfast room, five common areas, first floor restrooms, and three laundry rooms were completely revamped with the help of 26 generous leaders in the interior design industry. Renowned design firm Bunny Williams also selected Hudson Valley flush mounts in their design. The firm worked with David Miller-Engel at The Light Touch to secure Seneca flush mount fixtures, adorned with stars, in the colorful playroom. The culmination of the RMH-LI Project Design 2013 started this past October with a Designer Showcase Gala and an open house weekend. Phase II of Project Design for the remaining 24 resident bedrooms and common areas will begin in 2014.

REAL LIGHT

Three designers let their lighting projects shine A room often doesn’t come to life until a designer sees it in real light. When fans of Larger Than Light’s Facebook page (www.facebook/largerthanlight) were asked to let their best lighting projects shine in our “Let It Shine” contest, dozens of project submissions incorporating Troy Lighting, Corbett Lighting, and Hudson Valley Lighting® fixtures flooded in from across the country. While each entry shined bright, we narrowed it down to three winning designs. FINALIST

Cesto by Corbett Lighting Lakeway, TX

Designer: Janna Paulson, PPDS Design + Interiors, Austin, TX Photo: Merrick Ales Photography Inspiration: “The style of the room is classical with a nod toward mid century modern. We chose Cesto because of its classical look. Everything in the room is clean and orderly, so the fixture threw light patterns on all the walls, which softened the effect. We also liked the scale, shape and mass of the pendant. It is a beautiful fixture.” Contact: www.ppds-inc.com

She has traveled the world and discovered that she appreciates a monochromatic backdrop to let beautiful pieces shine. Just like the jewelry she loves, the Barcelona is not only sophisticated but adds instant sparkle and personality to the space. It is truly the key signature piece that allows her dining room to ‘sing.’” Contact: www.kerriekelly.com

GRAND PRIZE

Darien by Hudson Valley Lighting

®

Woodinville, WA

Designer: Sarah Steele, Studio 212 Interiors, Woodinville, WA Photo: Clarity Northwest Photography Inspiration: “This custom home is set on 3 acres and surrounded by trees and farmland. The architecture is typical Northwest contemporary, with lots of natural light and low profile rooflines. We needed the lighting fixtures in this space to represent both the outdoor setting and the architectural integrity of the home. The inspiration behind choosing the Darien pendant was in its ability to capture a unique, contemporary farmhouse feel with a gorgeous antique nickel finish that spoke to a rustic/industrial vibe. Anchoring an 11’ kitchen island with 10’ ceilings was also a challenge, so the dimensions of the medium-sized Darien pendant were a perfect fit, along with the ample light cast by the trio of pendants for island eating.” Contact: www.studio212interiors.com L AR GER T H AN LIGHT | WINTE R

J

oe Berkowitz is used to delivering the unexpected. For 30 years, he’s created interiors that reflect lifestyle, passion and function with his signature eclectic style. As an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers and owner of Joseph A. Berkowitz Interiors Inc., Berkowitz is one of the premier designers in Philadelphia. He has been published in Philadelphia magazine, Philadelphia Style and Design New Jersey as well as Aspen and Boca magazine. He’s participated in the renowned Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse and has even appeared on HGTV’s Showhouse Showdown, where he transformed a Pittsburgh home into a winning showhouse. Taking a bold approach to design, Berkowitz encourages his clients to take risks and be different. When owners of a vacation home in Margate, New Jersey asked him to outfit their new plantationDesigner Joe Berkowitz style beach house, he was more than up for the unique challenge. After tearing down a storm-damaged Victorian home on the same lot, the adventurous homeowners opted for an architectural style not normally seen on the Jersey Shore. With architecture by Todd Miller of QMA Design + Build, the five-bedroom home built by Mark Gallagher, Inc. of Margate, NJ was completed in summer 2012. Having worked with Berkowitz previously on two other projects, the homeowners knew he could again deliver impressive and dramatic results. While a traditional beach house brings to mind nautical kitsch and wall to wall seashells, Berkowitz opted for a more sophisticated approach. Utilizing an eclectic mix of elements, he deconstructed the home’s design down to the essentials; each furnishing, finish and object well-chosen and artfully coordinated. A neutral color palette creates flow throughout the home, imbuing the space with lightness and serenity. Berkowitz utilized a variety of Troy Lighting fixtures to help create the home’s comfortable lighting layout. In the living room, Raffia chandeliers with flowing linen shades add casual flair to the space, keeping it open and airy. Shimmering Mercury pendants command attention above the dining room table, accented by a dazzling antique silver finish and hand-worked iron framing. Above the bar, Toledo sconces light up the glass-covered “memory bar” housing photos and other mementos from family vacations. Each lighting choice enhances the home’s spacious environment and classic aesthetic. Currently working on exciting projects in Philadelphia, Florida and New York, we caught up with Joe Berkowitz to learn more about his design process and rules for lighting in the home.

Tell us a little about your design background. As a child I was always interested in design and artistic things. I built model homes out of clay and used scraps of carpet from my parents’ home to carpet the various rooms. I went to school for architecture originally, where they used my projects as teaching aids. I switched to design but by then had already started my own design business with my first client, a townhouse on Delancey Street in Philadelphia. Things kept growing from there… What is your first inspiration when designing a client’s space? My first inspiration is the space itself – all of my designs start with the layout. My next inspiration comes from the client – their personality, clothes, color preferences, etc. How did you get involved with the design of the Margate beach house? The Margate beach house is the third project I have designed for this client. I have done a lodge-style home in the suburbs of Philadelphia, a chic Mediterranean villa in West Palm Beach, Florida and this plantation-style beach house in Margate, New Jersey. All are very specific but different in style. What inspired your design? My design was inspired by all the typical beach homes I did not want to emulate. I like each project to be unique unto itself. This house needed to be a serene retreat without the “cute factor” of many beach homes. The furnishings and finishings are extremely tasteful and elegant. There are a lot of soothing neutral and grey tones as well as soft, non-pastel coloring.

What was your biggest challenge in designing for the space? The most challenging area of the home was the living room. It is a long space broken up by the pathway from the front door to the dining room and staircase. Rather than split it into two equal sitting areas, I chose to make a large living area at one end and a small sitting area with a wonderful custom pull-up bar at the other. Now it is a great multipurpose living and party space. You’ve said “Lighting is a huge decorating tool that’s often overlooked.” Do you have a lighting philosophy when you’re designing a space? Lighting is often used solely to illuminate a space. It has much more value when used to highlight the three levels of that space. I prefer some overhead light to shed a general glow, wall lights in the form of art lights and sconces to illuminate items and architecture, and table lamps for warm, more direct reading and surface light. The combination makes a much more inviting and dramatic space. Do you find yourself drawn to certain types or styles of lighting fixtures? I like large lighting fixtures in almost all spaces; a larger scale makes all rooms appear bigger. I prefer either a very classic or very exotic style… middle-of-the-road does not do it for my projects. Lighting is a great accessory! Just as in the fashion world, a room without good lighting is like a woman in a beautiful dress without jewelry.

The guest bedroom comes alive with an inviting color palette and Caribbean feel

JOE’S LIGHTING PICKS:

Crosby by Troy Lighting “I love the large scale and strong presence of this piece. It was a showstopper when I used it on HGTV’s Showhouse Showdown.”

A sitting area off the master bedroom

Troy Lighting’s Mercury pendants are beautiful focal points above the dining room table. What drew you to these pendants and their unique application? I chose Troy Lighting’s Mercury pendants because they’re both classic and unique – my criteria for great lighting. They are the perfect marriage of form, material and style. I would not put two fixtures of this size over a table unless the look was still reserved. The soft shape and reflective quality is a great foil to the enormous wooden trestle table. The dark iron is a great accent to the grey painted kitchen cabinets in the background. What drew you to Troy Lighting’s Raffia chandeliers for the living room? I wanted two chandeliers in the beamed openings I created in the living room, and I knew they would be in view of the fixtures in the dining room. Troy Lighting’s linen shade chandeliers were perfect. They have a gauzy effect and blend perfectly with the monochromatic color scheme. The texture of the linen adds a rich quality and depth to the light it casts.

Prism by Troy Lighting “This sconce has a clean industrial edge but is still elegant. It gives off great hallway or mood lighting.”

Your winning “Let It Shine” entry in our Summer 2012 issue featured Crosby by Troy Lighting. What continually draws you to Troy Lighting and the other Littman Brands? I consistently use the Littman Brands lights for several reasons: they are sculptural, the designs transcend the function of the light bulbs and add drama to my designs, and there is so much variety I can find something for every project I have going. What are some lighting or design trends you’ve noticed recently? Of course industrial style has been all the rage; distressed metals and institutional lighting in the home is the new look. Wall sconces are really in fashion. Whether in the powder room, up a staircase, or on either side of a mirror in the foyer, they are the darling of the lighting world right now. If you could give one piece of advice to our readers about lighting or design, what would it be? Easy. When it comes to both lighting and design, I have three pieces of advice: recreate don’t duplicate, mix don’t match, and take risks, never play it safe.

Inspired Design Giving back with style at the Hampton Designer Showhouse

A

s one of the East Coast’s most prestigious showhomes, the Hampton Designer Showhouse brings together a host of exceptional designers for a charitable cause. More than 30 famed interior designers and decorative artists showcased their work inside the 2013 Hampton Designer Showhouse, a benefit for the local Southampton Hospital presented by Traditional Home magazine and produced by the Hampton Designer Showhouse Foundation, Inc. Kicked off with a fabulous preview gala and cocktail party, more than 7,000 visitors and design enthusiasts toured the property during its six week open house. The 12,000 square foot shingle-style home built by Bodenchak Design and Build covers a wellmanicured five acre property in Bridgehampton, New York. It includes many modern amenities: solar and geothermal power, iPad-controlled heating and air conditioning, heated gunite pool, ten person spa, water sunbed, outdoor fireplace and tennis court, and a fully finished lower level with a movie theater and wine cellar. Designers tailored each room in the 7 bedroom and 7.5 bathroom house to their unique styles, many utilizing Corbett Lighting, Troy Lighting and Hudson Valley Lighting® lighting fixtures to enhance their visions and transform the showhouse into the ultimate summer home. Visitors to the Hampton Designer Showhouse are greeted by Corbett Lighting’s captivating Houdini pendant in the entrance foyer designed by Michael Herold Design. The pendant’s silver and gold leaf finish, polished stainless accents, and clear and smoke crystals set the tone for the home’s high style. Set just off the entry hallway, the detailed Bakes and Company kitchen offers classic, refined styling. Two modern Gresham Park pendants by Hudson Valley Lighting accentuate the room’s height with a light touch that offsets the kitchen island’s substantial quartz countertop. Pale wood cabinetry pops on white walls for a clean and crisp look, which is further accented by the subtle layering of neutrals and finishes. Across the hallway, Corbett Lighting’s showstopping Dolcetti pendant commands attention above the dining room table. Adorned with mixed shells and crystal, this pendant is a glamorous addition to the relaxed, tropical space by Lillian August. Warm apple greens and cool teals create delightful contrast, while rich textiles and bold prints add texture and depth. Adjacent to the dining room is Old Town Crossing’s vibrant butler’s pantry, a small space that packs a big statement. With crystal drops shining along graceful curves and polished metal rings, Hudson Valley Lighting’s airy Danville adds the elegance but not the weightiness of a traditional chandelier. In addition to four Newport scones, another dazzling Danville chandelier appears in the upstairs master bath, standing out against the cool and muted color palette. Soft light pours through the translucent sheers, creating a look of natural elegance, while shiny mirrored finishes and light metallics add luxurious sparkle to the soothing space by Michael Mariotti Interior Design. Perhaps the most eclectic room in the home is by Lynne Scalo Design. The front bedroom evokes a modern art museum with its sophisticated aesthetic and eyecatching pieces. Hanging above a reading nook, Corbett Lighting’s Vixen chandelier shines bright with modern glamour; its traditional silhouette is modernized with polished nickel jewelry chain and crystal beads. With captivating style and inspiring design, the Hampton Designer Showhouse was a tremendous success for the design and philanthropic communities alike. To read more about the showhouse, watch for a larger feature in Traditional Home magazine’s July/August 2014 issue.

FROM THE SHOWROOM FLOOR

A Shining Landmark on the Bowery How a New York City lighting showroom is outshining the competition

They say the neon lights are bright on Broadway, but one lighting showroom is shining bright downtown. Over the past three decades, Lighting by Gregory has become a landmark New York City showroom and a world class lighting destination. “Our showroom is one of the most unique in the country,” says William Skarren, president and CEO of Lighting by Gregory. “People come from all over the world to shop here.” In 1978, lighting industry veteran Joel Horowitz founded Lighting by Gregory (named after his son) in Manhattan’s historic Bowery neighborhood, the city’s original lighting district dating back over a century. Despite its competitive location, Lighting by Gregory continues to stand apart from its neighbors. “All of my salespeople have over 25 years experience in lighting,” says Skarren, who has been with the company since 2009. “That knowledge separates us from what most people know of as a traditional lighting store.” The showroom’s high level of expertise and commitment to customer service pulls in far-reaching clientele, including international clients with apartments in the city. “When they come to buy lighting for their place here, they’ll generally buy additional lighting, and we’ll ship it all over the world for them. That makes us very unique.” The showroom’s winning reputation has also earned the business of celebrities, politicians and various movies and TV shows, including Law & Order, Men in Black III and many Woody Allen films.

from Littman Brands. “We have a tremendous relationship with Littman Brands. They are one of the top lighting groups out there.” Hudson Valley Lighting® was recently added to a display gallery area upfront. Skarren believes its prime visibility in the storefront window helps establish the company’s presence and brand within the showroom. “Hudson Valley continues to bring out new product and keep the display fresh. They’re constantly servicing it.” While Lighting by Gregory has a comprehensive website for conducting global business, Skarren believes the showroom experience is crucial to choosing the right lighting. “What we see are people coming in very frustrated because they saw something online and loved it, but when they put it up, they realized it wasn’t what they wanted.” For this reason, his knowledgeable store staff is invaluable. “Our people know all the questions to ask. How high are your ceilings? What type of room is it? What do you want to light? That personal touch just doesn’t happen over the internet.”

To ensure customer satisfaction, an incredible amount of inventory is kept onsite within 16 floors of warehouse space over four buildings. “With that much product on hand, customers are pretty much guaranteed to find what they’re looking for,” says Skarren. Presented in a gallery format by manufacturer, Lighting By Gregory’s 8,000 square feet showroom space includes Corbett Lighting, Troy Lighting and CSL®

INNOVATIONS IN LED It’s no mystery why LEDs have become the light source of choice for many lighting designers. Not only do they use 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, but they last 25 times longer and require virtually no maintenance because they generate little to no heat. Currently offering more LED options than ever before, Littman Brands is lighting up new possibilities with a variety of energy efficient and high performance collections.

Troy Lighting’s fully customizable RLM collections

2

Inspired by factory shades of the early 20th century, Troy Lighting’s RLM (Reflective Luminaire Manufacturer) collections offer vintage to modern looks with LED options fully engineered for maximum performance. Produced domestically in City of Industry, California, each light is completely customizable with a variety of arm, stem, post and mounting options to choose from. Additionally, 19 standard finishes and two specialty finishes, as well as a Coastal finish option, are available.

Above: Troy Lighting’s Environmental Series Kinetic (left) uses high-efficacy LED lighting while Wright (middle) and Barbosa (right) use ENERGY STARcertified integral photocell technology

1

Environmental concerns regarding light pollution have led many cities to enact Dark Sky regulations to limit the amount of light going into the night sky. However, being energy conscious doesn’t have to come at the cost of quality. The Environmental Series from Troy Lighting combines the exquisite designs of hand-crafted lanterns with dark sky compliant options, fluorescent options that comply with ENERGY STAR requirements and new LED options that meet Title 24 standards.

CSL®’s high performance Eco-Downlights

3

CSL® (Creative Systems Lighting) takes recessed lighting to the next level with their energy efficient, high-performance Eco-Downlights. The Eco-Downlight LED “Mini” is a compact version which offers an integral proprietary 120V LED driver that is 90% efficient and an average-rated lamp life of 50,000 hours at 70 percent lumen maintenance. Fully dimmable, the UL-listed and ENERGY STAR-compliant LED fixture meets the most advanced technical needs of architects and lighting designers today.

The Great Escape Shedding new light on a relaxing beachfront getaway

L

ocated on the beautiful Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, CA, the Embassy Suites Mandalay Beach Hotel & Resort is the only all-suite beachfront resort in Southern California. Spread across 8.5 acres of oceanfront property, each of its 250 rooms is outfitted with a private bedroom, living room and two full baths. The decor reflects the hotel’s Spanish Mediterranean style with an arcaded courtyard and terracotta flagstone floor. During a recent renovation, Jeff Wierzba, Vice President of Troy Lighting Contract Hospitality worked with Dallas design firm Fourth Dimension Designs to create custom lighting fixtures for the resort. Director of Design Betsy Kersting and Interior Designer Kellyn Schneringer of Fourth Dimension Designs oversaw the renovation of key public spaces in the iconic coastal hotel, including the restaurant and lounge. “We wanted a concept that was not too formal and not too casual. It was important to make it feel like you were at a coastal resort,” said Kersting. The team utilized raw materials and natural tones found on the coastline to give the hotel a renewed sense of rustic sophistication while staying true to the integrity of the hotel’s original design. To complement the transitional styling, Kersting designed lighting fixtures from existing Troy Lighting lines that were executed by their Contract Hospitality division. “Troy Lighting has a unique look – they create products that no other lighting company has come up with,” said Kersting. To work in each environment, Kersting modified elements to suit the space, such as increasing scale and changing rods to rope. Above the lofty dining area, Kersting used Troy Lighting’s Pike Place chandelier as a starting point for creating a larger tiered fixture. “The center buffet seating area is two and half stories high with windows and faux balconies around it. The chandelier needed to be over-sized to help bring down the scale so it wouldn’t feel like a big, empty space.” Kersting utilized the space’s original beams and ironwork, so she specified the same finish on the custom chandeliers. And although Kersting loved the carbon filament bulbs that came with the original fixture, she first opted for longer-lasting GU24 base compact florescent bulbs to cut energy and maintenance costs. However, after a discussion with Jeff Wierzba, she modified her choice for the new GU24 LED lamps with dimming capabilities, which offered a longer lifespan as well. 25
