HOMELY
Sanitaryware Showroom Taipei, Taiwan
Angela Liu
Homely was a renowned sanitary ware agency in Taiwan, where they represented high-end brands like Alape, Bulthaup, Dornbracht, Grohe, Keuco, Hoesch, V&A, and V&B. The products exhibited in this showroom were of the highest class, so I wanted to have of atmosphere as an upscale retail. The concept was “Art Gallery. Since I wanted the products to be displayed like art works in a gallery or museum setting, I kept the color and material minimal and made sure the space was not over crowded with different products. In the end, I was very happy with the outcome. The design I most proud of was the revolving panels for shower set display, which were designed to mimic the form of paintings. The white panel was made of Corian and could still be reused if the client decided to replace to other shower set. Since the client wanted the visitors to be able to test the products, they were all operable. If a visit was scheduled ahead, visitors can reserved the space and actually take a shower inside. The client was highly satisfied with the project. It was featured on 2013 IW magazine and was awarded for the 2013 Modern Decoration International Media Award in China.

MOOFFY Shoe Retail
Muiltiple Cities in China
Angela Liu
ST & SAT was one of the biggest listed shoe manufactures in China. CJ studio helped 6 brands under the company to develop their interior design strategies and prototype stores. The shoe retails in Asian department stores could come with a storefront or to share an open space with many other brands. Flexibility was extremely important since the floor size would vary from 5 sq. meter to 100 sq. meter. Mooffy was the high-end brand among all ST & SAT brands. The brand focuses 70% on ballerina flats along with 30% of other shoe types. In this proposal I developed many display components and had each store consist of some or all the components. I incorporated the shoe display with painting frames, box bases, and metal trays that are often seen in major name brand and jewelry retails to convey an atmosphere that is slightly girly yet somewhat sophisticated. The result was a concept that was a combination of a dance studio and art gallery. However, the client was not completely satisfied with the first proposal because it was too monotone for them. Therefore at the second proposal, I add more color and texture to give the space more vitality and hopefully it suited better for China market’s taste.

ENJOY
Youth Career Program Hsin-Chu, Taiwan
Angela Liu
ENJOY was a small open competition held by a local branch of Minister of Labor in Taiwan. I, as a freelance interior design consultant, collaborated with an interactivity design studio to complete the project. The goal was to offer teenagers in Hsin-Chu district an interactive space to understand and virtually experience different types of job. The majority of the space was composed of plywood, either painted in colors or showing the original wood surface. I wanted to have a vibrant space but I did not want to apply full rainbow colors, which would make the space look like a kindergarten, so I balanced the yellow, orange and coral with dark brown and some simple graphics. A highlight of the project includes a girl character that was designed earlier and offered as part of the project. I made her into a stand-up 2D figurine with the face part cut out so visitors could go behind her and take a fun photo. The main installation was competition’s title E.N.J.O.Y. and a big screen on the back wall that were all interactive stations that give different aspects of experience or information about a job. For example, the big screen provided motion-sensing games for visitors to experience a job, and the station next to the letter Y came with 2 iPads where visitors could find relevant places for further information or intern opportunities.

PANAMA RESORT Resort Complex
Pedasi, Panama
Angela Liu
Playa Panamaes was a huge project. The site was a virgin land by South Pacific Ocean and the developer started building from scratch. The project was a resort complex with separate constructions for lobby, cafĂŠ, restaurants, residential buildings, surfer village and spa. Studio CMP was responsible for interior design for all areas and we worked closely with a Panamanian local architecture and Construction firm and a US landscape consultant. This project started before me at CMP and the design was still in development after 3 years. I worked on the initial planning, sketches, renderings, model making, shop drawings, and completed most of the drawing sets. The part I enjoyed the most was to design and develop the bespoke furniture and materials. I also helped designing several lightings, some carpets and fabric patterns, and about a dozen seating.

PIANOSEA
Residential Condominium Lobby & Model Room Tao Yuan, Taiwan

Lobby Pianosea was a residential condominium located in Tao Yuan. The project was close to the coconstruction of Tao Yun Airport Railway, Taiwan Railway and Taiwan High Speed Railway. The local developer approach CJ to design the lobby and a model room. The building was a long and narrow structure. I set concierge on both end of the lobby, one was dual-function as a serving cafĂŠ counter and the other one is the formal concierge for residences. The most wonderful thing about the lobby was the full height windows that connecting the front and back deck. The whole lobby could bath under sunshine. The building had a very curvy facade and the developer would like that have the theme continue to the interior. We designed a curvy back wall and hallway along the living room area. In the end, it felt cozier yet still spacious.

The clients of University Place was a couple, one of them was a renowned winery manger in France and the other is a successful art dealer in New York and Paris. They were in love of the idea of open space as one can tell from the plan. Their bedroom and living area continued the open space at the end of the hallway with giant sliding doors for the occupational privacy need. The space was filled with abundant humanistic and artistic flatus from their wall of bookcase, and art and furniture collection. I participated in the initial planning, sketches, renderings, model making, and completed most of the drawings. This project has been featured in Interior Design Magazine in November 2011 and French AD magazine in April 2013.

CEO’s Guesthouse An Exclusive Floor Hidden among a group of Banking Buildings Taipei, Taiwan

The guesthouse area included an entry, a seating lunge, a bar, a grand stage lounge, a grand dinning and a billiard/game room. This project was first commissioned to a famous New York design firm in. However the construction cost was too high and the client did not like the scheme even though it was being modified several times. The local interior design consultant hired me to redesign the guesthouse area. The functions and spaces were redistributed and redesigned with material and technique that were available locally. The client had experience living in Japan and US, and he liked to have a combination of both life styles. The bar area was also used for shabu shabu (mini hotpot), and electronic stoves were hidden underneath the glass tabletop. The stage area could function as a mini concert hall or as a big karaoke lounge where TV screen could drop down from the ceiling. I kept the ceiling high and space to be as open as possible, while sufficiently utilize the available space. During this project I worked closely with my carpet and lighting venders for bespoke items. I enjoy the process as learning about all knowledge and possibilities. It was a good collaboration. My high-end interior experience helped the local interior consultant to solve the problem. I also connected them with carpet, lighting and some other venders that can provide them with difference and better service. Both the client and the consultant were happy about the final product and that was the best we could hope for.

MOT was a life style store. The concept of the product line was to create contemporary and practical design commodities. Nowadays even though people have smartphones that can contain everything within, many of us still love the physical touch of papers. My target users were designers like myself. I always hope there is a way to include all the gadgets with my sketchbook. Moreover, I’d like to make the gadgets be part of the artistic presentation. I liked the Moleskine notebook but I wished there were more bands. I went to a fabric market and find different elastic ribbons. I envisioned the covers as canvases and I stroked the ribbons as in contemporary art. The end result was like Piet Mondrian met Marcel Duchamp. The Initial attempt

MOT was a life style store. The concept of the product line was to create contemporary and practical design commodities. After worked on other projects with elastic material, I found many Taiwanese manufactures that produced specialty elastic material. Elastic fabric was an interesting material, but we usually only see their application on fashion or sports related BACK products. I was amazed by their variety and possibilities and Alternative Design wanted to develop something with them. Cut The use of the card case was quite intuitive. The movement of case opening and card drawing could be done at once. Elastic fabric were usually synthetic and very durable, tending to ColorTherefore, bounce back to the original position afterwards. there would be no need for case closing movement. I wanted the case frame to be made of aluminum so it can hold the shape while being very light-weighted.

Neo-Chinese
Conceptual Furniture Design Taipei, Taiwan

Tabletop
Neo-Chinese was a series where I derived inspiration from Chinese art. The original painting was by Chinese Deconstructism artist Wang, Huai Qing. The painting title was Thousand Houses, Million Families. He depicted the black roof tile and white wall of southern China with his own interpretation. I studied the painting and further simplified it. I kept the black roof tile but arbitrarily minimized the windows and wall into straight lines. I found that I could still see the house construction even just with simple lines. It worked like a visual puzzle for people to find where the houses were.

Sofa back
There were over a million ways to draw mountains in ancient and contemporary Chinese paintings. I was always fascinated by them and would like to make something with them. The digital printing technique allowed us to do many that could not be done before. Nowadays we can print custom designs in small quantities, allowing for more risk-taking. I can find forms appropriate for furniture making that was inspired by the paintings. I first started with a contemporary painting, and derived the artist’s technique into a form for sofa back. Then I went through many other paintings and found among them the shapes appropriate for sofa backs. I sincerely hope there would be a chance to develop the concept further and make real products out of it.
