Roy Kortmann Head Coach• •16th season

Entering his 16th season as head coach at Long Island University, Roy Kortmann has built a perennial softball powerhouse in downtown Brooklyn and one of the top programs in the Northeast region. His teams have won eight regular-season Northeast Conference titles, seven NEC Tournament titles and subsequent trips to the NCAA Regionals. Kortmann has been voted the NEC Coach of the Year on seven occasions. In 2007, Kortmann and his staff were named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Mid-Atlantic Coaching Staff of the Year, marking the second time in his career he has received the award. Kortmann has coached four All-Americans, 71 all-conference players, eight NEC Pitchers of the Year, four NEC Newcomers of the Year, and four NEC Player of the Year honorees. His program has produced 21 all-region selections, including 11 first-team members, and his teams have recorded seven 30-plus win seasons. It is through this success that Kortmann is able to walk into some of the most prestigious amateur softball tournaments in the country and recruit and sign the nation’s best players. Not only are the future student-athletes among the cream of the crop, but so too is the schedule he and the LIU staff puts together each season. Kortmann continues to challenge his team by competing against nationallyranked schools, lifting the Blackbirds onto the national scene in collegiate softball.

While Kortmann has averaged over 28 victories per season and reached the 400-win milestone with a victory over Robert Morris in 2008, he also anticipates the best from his players in the classroom and beyond. He expects the young women that set foot on the downtown

Brooklyn campus to compete and succeed in the game of life. For the past three seasons, the Blackbirds were named an NFCA AllAcademic team and finished 2009 with a team grade-point average of 3.22. The past seven years have been some of the most successful in school history on the field, as the Blackbirds have won at least 29 games five times, won the NEC regular and postseason titles five out of the seven years and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four seasons. Last season, the Blackbirds defeated a ranked team for the first time with an 11-6 win over No. 12 Northwestern. In 2007, Long Island knocked off eventual NCAA Super Regional participant Cal State Fullerton in extra innings and won the second NCAA Tournament game in the program’s history with a 5-1 win over Colgate. With team success comes individual player honors and the past two seasons have been no different. The trio of shortstop Bianca Mejia (2009), pitcher Blaire Porter (2008) and first baseman Randi Gillespie (2007) all earned spots on the Easton All-America Second Team. In 2009, both Mejia and Porter, along with outfielder Renae Beauchman were named to the NFCA All-Northeast Region Team. Kortmann has already left an enduring mark on the program, but year in and year out he and his staff are committed to winning championships and bringing his team to the national stage. With a top recruiting strategy and an overall philosophy based on hard work, it has become evident that while winning is an objective, he believes the program will thrive with players who are the embodiment of the true student-athlete. Coaching and recruiting in such a unique setting, Kortmann has taken an honest approach and has sold his team on the benefits of working hard and staying focused. “Our girls have a special opportunity to not only play competitive

Head Coach Division I softball at LIU, but they are doing it in the heart of New York City where there will be countless opportunities for them after they graduate,” Kortmann said. “Education always comes first and with that, the need to balance academics and their responsibilities on the softball diamond.” A top fastpitch player in his own right, Kortmann is the third coach since the program’s inception in 1982 and its winningest with 434 triumphs. Kortmann directed LIU to a dominant 2002 performance with a 21-1 conference record. He led the Blackbirds to a schoolrecord 37 wins and an NEC Tournament crown in 2001. In 1999, he guided the team to an NEC Tournament championship and the school’s first NCAA Regional appearance. They became the first women’s team in conference history to win an NCAA event by defeating Manhattan, 4-3, on the tournament’s second day. In 1998, the Blackbirds won 33 games. LIU qualified for the ECAC Regionals and Kortmann gained his second NEC Coach of the Year honor along with garnering NFCA Mid-Atlantic Coaching Staff of the Year accolades with assistant Bill Gehrke. The 1996 season enabled him to win his first of seven NEC Coach of the Year awards. He guided his young team to a 10-6 conference mark and to a successful run in the NEC Tournament that nearly earned the Blackbirds a league title. For the past 10 years, his LIU teams have been among the top hitting and fielding squads in the NEC. Kortmann maintains a hands-on approach with all facets of his team. Elevated to full-time status in 1998, Kortmann also serves as business manager for the athletic department, handling the day-to-day operations of department budgets. He was also a member of the LIU Fiscal Integrity Committee.

NCAA Tournament Northeast Conference Champions

Kortmann is a former member of the NCAA Softball Championship Committee, responsible for the selection and seeding of teams that qualify for the NCAA Tournament and the College World Series. In 2004, Kortmann chaired the NCAA Championship Committee on Selection for the College World Series. He chaired the NCAA Format Committee and the East Region Advisory Committee. He was also on the NFCA/USA Today Top 25 Ranking Committee and currently represents the NEC on the NFCA Head Coaches Committee. Kortmann runs the annual Rise Ball Softball Camp and Clinic in Edison, N.J. Along with Hofstra head coach Bill Edwards and Rutgers head coach Jay Nelson, Kortmann offers an array of camps and instructional clinics to youth softball players. The programs are offered to any girl entering high school or already enrolled. Each camp provides small group instruction where the coaches give oneon-one attention to all enrollees. Kortmann received a Bachelor of Science degree in management from Rider University in 1980 and an MBA from Lehigh University in 1982. He resides in Manalapan, N.J., with his wife Monica and their four children: Fallon, Conor, Kerrie and Shannon

From 1999-2000, Kortmann was the NFCA Division I All-American Committee Mid-Atlantic Region chair and part of the selection process of Division I All-Americans in Oklahoma at the College World Series. He also was a member of the NEC Sports Committee for softball.

Assistant Coaches

Bill Gehrke Assistant Coach• •16th Season

Bill Gehrke begins his 16th season as a member of the Long Island University softball coaching staff. Gehrke performs a number of roles for the program, including the implementation of game strategy and the coordination of national recruiting efforts. In his tenure, the Blackbirds have won no fewer than 20 games in 12 consecutive seasons, including nine straight Northeast Conference Tournament or regular season championships. The 2001 team won a program-best 37 contests, and the 1999, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 squads captured the NEC Tournament championship, thus earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament. A tireless worker, Gehrke’s knowledge of the game has been instrumental in developing 71 all-conference players over the last 15 seasons. His innovative softball mind has helped to develop the Blackbirds’ successful defenses, limiting opponents to an average of less than three runs per game. In 2002, Gehrke’s efforts did not go unnoticed as he was a recipient of the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year award. Criteria for the award included longevity, knowledge, long-term success and special contributions to the school and/or community. Before accepting his post at LIU, Gehrke spent nearly 20 years coaching, running and promoting training clinics in girls’ and women’s softball. From 1985-87, he served as head softball coach at St. Francis (N.Y.).

Assistant Coach• •Third Season

Krystal Mejia begins her third season as assistant coach for Long Island University after a decorated three-year playing career for the Blackbirds. Mejia works with the Blackbirds in all aspects of hitting while specializing with the infielders defensively. As a transfer student from the University of New Mexico, Mejia burst onto the scene in her first year for LIU, batting .336 with five home runs en route to being named the Northeast Conference Player of the Year. In the NEC Tournament, Mejia shone even brighter as she went 8-for-16 with three home runs, seven RBIs and six runs scored. Her MVP performance helped Long Island secure its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Mejia was named an All-NEC Second Team selection as a junior and hit a career-high .326 with six home runs and 30 RBIs. A shoulder injury slowed her in her senior campaign, but she came through in the clutch with a game-tying RBI single against Robert Morris in the NEC championship. The Blackbirds eventually went on to beat the Colonials and advance to the NCAA Regionals. In 2007, Mejia was an assistant coach for Florida International University in Miami, Fla. Working primarily with the hitters and middle infielders, Mejia helped the Golden Panthers to 22 victories, including a three-game sweep of nationally-ranked LouisianaLafayette. Mejia currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y. with former LIU basketball player and husband, Albert Forbes.

Gehrke completed two years of study at Brooklyn College in 1981. He has acted as director of softball programs at several private athletic associations and provided individual training throughout the area. Gehrke currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Jessie DePippo Volunteer Assistant Coach• •Second Season

Jessie DePippo begins her second season as volunteer assistant coach at Long Island University following a stellar career behind the plate for the Blackbirds. DePippo works with the team’s catchers and assists with hitting instruction. DePippo made her presence felt for the Blackbirds in 2004, winning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year honors in her first season. She led the NEC in total bases and finished second in batting average (.359), hits (56) and doubles (13). In her sophomore season, she garnered All-NEC First Team honors after batting .313 with 41 hits and 15 RBIs. As a junior, DePippo led LIU with 36 RBIs and blasted eight home runs. She had an integral role in Long Island’s NCAA Tournament victory over Colgate, recording two hits and driving in a run. In her senior campaign, the California native earned her second AllNEC First Team honor while clubbing five home runs along with 29 RBIs.

LIU Softball: A Championship Tradition

In 2008, DePippo was named NEC Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and earned a place on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. DePippo graduated magna cum laude with a degree in childhood education in 2007 and earned a master’s degree in education with a concentration in literacy in 2009. DePippo currently resides in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Season Outlook Long Island enters the 2010 campaign primed to return to the top of the Northeast Conference. Stocked with talent including two AllAmericans in senior hurler Blaire Porter and junior shortstop Bianca Mejia, the Blackbirds welcome back six members of last season’s All-NEC squad. Last season, Long Island posted a 3-2 record at the nationally recognized Cathedral City Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., including the program’s first win over a ranked opponent, an 11-6 victory over No. 12 Northwestern.

“We are coming off a season when we saw our program compete with the best teams in the country,” head coach Roy Kortmann said. “We had wins over nationally ranked teams and perennial softball powers. With the core group of returning players from that team we are confident this year can be a very special one in LIU softball history.” Porter returns for her senior season to lead the pitching staff. The two-time defending NEC Pitcher of the Year enters the season with a career earned run average of 1.88 and is Long Island’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 538. Porter was especially dominant during NEC play in 2009, posting a 0.55 ERA and holding opponents to a .131 batting average. “An All-American in 2008, Blaire has the skills to help lead this program on the mound against anyone in the country,” Kortmann said. “Blaire has matured mentally and mechanically to be an even more dominate pitcher in 2010 and provide for some very exciting moments for this year’s team.” Bolstering the staff will be sophomore transfer Sarah Reynolds. During her freshman campaign at Temple, the 6-0 Reading, Pa., product posted seven victories and a 3.51 earned run average in the circle. Against perennial NCAA tournament participant Fresno State, Reynolds kept Temple in the contest, allowing only three runs in six strong innings. Freshman Megan Sheaf will give Kortmann added depth at the pitching position. “With such a strong schedule as we play, both of these young pitchers

will be called upon to compete against the best teams in the country,” Kortmann said. “These two talented young ladies will develop into solid pitchers and be an integral part of our future success.” Senior Mariesha Marker will once again return as the Blackbirds’ starting catcher. An All-NEC First Team selection behind the plate, Marker displayed remarkable toughness and durability, starting all 50 games for Long Island in 2009. The Keizer, Ore., native posted a career-high .293 batting average in 2009 and remains LIU’s most dangerous stolen base threat with 38 career swipes. “One of the best catchers we have had at LIU, Mariesha leads with courage both on and off the field,” Kortmann said. “A terrific competitor, Mariesha’s mature approach to the game brings a level of confidence and comfort to her teammates.” Freshmen Emily Kakuska and Lindsey Walker both come to Brooklyn with the ability to spell Marker behind the plate. Kakuska can be used as a utility infielder as she saw time at multiple positions at A.B. Miller High School in Fontana, Calif. Walker is also a versatile athlete who can catch and see time at multiple outfield positions. “These are two young athletes who will develop into solid catchers to lead our program from behind the mask,” Kortmann said. “As they challenge themselves to compete at the edges of their abilities I am certain the learning process for the both of them will accelerate.” Long Island welcomes back arguably the most experienced infield in the NEC, led by Mejia who earned spots on the NFCA and Easton All-America squads at shortstop. The Sylmar, Calif., product broke LIU’s single season home run record with 14 long balls while posting an eye-popping .404 bating average. “Bianca competes in every moment and is at her best when her best is needed,” Kortmann said. “I am not certain that there is a better player in the country and she is still improving. Bianca had superior success against the best teams in the country last year. With an improved understanding of the game, healthier, more athletic, and

has made an offseason improvement offensively and we will rely on Chelsea to find a way to get on base where we can utilize her speed to score runs.” The freshman trio of Karina Cervantes, Brianna Melero and Jazmin Rodriguez will compete for outfield spots. Cervantes was a two-time all-league selection out of Mater Dei High School in Tustin, Calif. Melero was a member of the Valley Breeze travel team that participated in nationals three times while Rodriguez was a twotime all-league selection. “These three are part of a solid recruiting class,” Kortmann said. “As competitive kids, we will need them to quickly adapt to the speed of the college game. They are continuing to develop their bodies athletically and as the year progresses I believe we will get some very good production from them all.”

an unmatched passion, Bianca’s best softball is still in front of her.” Mejia’s double play partner Brynn Lewis returns for her senior campaign after her second consecutive appearance on the All-NEC Second Team. Lewis saw her batting average rise 77 points from her sophomore to junior season. “Brynn has been a solid fixture for us at second base for years,” Kortmann said. “She made substantial improvement in her offensive game last year and her continued offseason maturation has made her ready to be a middle of the line up run producer for us.”

Over spring break from March 12-21, Long Island will compete in a pair of USF Tournaments. The 12-game road trip will be highlighted with the program’s first meetings with Dartmouth, James Madison, New Mexico State, North Florida, Texas Tech and Toledo. The Blackbirds return to New York to play rival Hofstra on March 25 before opening their home and conference slate in a doubleheader against Sacred Heart on March 27. LIU also plays host to conference doubleheaders against Quinnipiac, Fairleigh Dickinson, Robert Morris and Saint Francis (Pa.). Long Island travels for NEC double dips against Wagner, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary’s, Bryant and Central Connecticut State. Amanda MacIntosh

The duo of junior Amanda MacIntosh and sophomore Sterling Hoham combined to form a formidable tandem at the hot corner in 2009. MacIntosh belted five homers and knocked in 29 runs in 2009. Hoham saw time at second and third base as well as right field and batted at a .300 clip while using a keen eye to draw 13 free passes. Senior Raylene Asman has experience at second and third base. Coming off a year where she was forced into the role of designated player due to an injury, Asman is primed to return to the field and gives Kortmann another multi-talented fielder.

As in past seasons, Long Island will play one of the top out-ofonference schedules in the country. The Blackbirds open the 2010 slate in Clearwater, Fla., at the USF-DeMarini Tournament. LIU will face NCAA Super Regional participant Georgia Tech on Feb. 12 in the afternoon before battling national runner-up Florida later that night. IU will visit Miami, Fla., for the FIU Blue and Gold Tournament from Feb 19-21. The Blackbirds will make their annual trip to Palm Springs, Calif., for the Cathedral City Classic from Feb. 26-28 after going 3-2 last season.

“It is vital that Amanda and Sterling continue to improve as consistent offensive players for us and with Raylene’s shoulder surgery rehab complete we will need Raylene to work out a high on-base percentage for our offense,” Kortmann said. “On the defensive side all three have shown versatility and give us valuable flexibility if needed.” After a full year in left field in 2009, senior Chelsea Martinson will take the reigns in center. Martinson displayed the ability to hit from anywhere in the lineup a season ago while leading the squad with 11 sacrifice bunts. In her final campaign in Brooklyn, the speedy Agoura Hills, Calif., native will provide a wealth of experience in the LIU outfield. “Chelsea has terrific foot speed in the outfield and is a pure outgetter,” Kortmann said. “She is as valuable to us as a big RBI kid as she keeps teams from scoring by covering ground defensively. Dr. David Steinberg President Long Island University

Dr. David Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, was appointed April 1, 1985. During his tenure, the University has experienced a renaissance becoming one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. Under his leadership, the University’s endowment has increased nearly tenfold from $4.8 million to over $80 million, and its enrollment has risen from 19,000 to over 28,500. He has spearheaded a capital improvement plan, which has led to $400 million in investments in new construction and major renovations, resulting in vast improvements in the quality of study and life on each of the University’s campuses, especially, the C.W. Post and Brooklyn Campuses. New doctoral programs have been added and operating reserves have been created and increased. Born in New York City, Dr. Steinberg, is the son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue. He was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England, and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he received both a master’s in East Asian Studies (1963) and a Ph.D. in History (1964). Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as Executive Assistant to the President, becoming Vice President and University Secretary in 1977. The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for four decades. His ﬁrst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its fourth edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, Nicholas Platt, as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” Dr. Steinberg also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. He recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. He is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” 2005.

Gale Stevens Haynes Provost Long Island University Brooklyn Campus

“I am a big dreamer,” says Gale Stevens Haynes, Provost of Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus and an exemplary educator, lawyer and role model. “If you don’t dream, nothing ever changes.”

In 2006, under the Provost’s leadership, the Campus completed the biggest building project in its history: the $45 million Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. With state-of-the-art fitness and aquatic facilities for students and other members of the Campus, the WRAC also features an outstanding, 2,500seat venue, open to the public for athletic and civic events. Its Harriet Rothkopf Heilbrunn ’32 Academic Nursing Center offers an extensive array of free preventive health services as well as a home for Brooklyn’s first Lupus outreach and education office, all in service to the entire community. A wider array of wellness services, including special cluster of intervention programs addressing asthma and lead poisoning in children, are planned to begin in 2007. In recent months, the Provost also has overseen a dramatic re-landscaping that has nearly tripled the green space for the central campus, with native plants and amenities that create a serene environment and enhance the “college experience” on this urban campus. Involved in higher education for three decades, Provost Haynes began her association with the Brooklyn Campus as a student, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in counseling. She started her career as director of the Higher Education Opportunity Program. Upon completing her law degree at St. John’s University in 1983, she became Long Island University’s legal counsel before assuming the position of Provost in 1989. A Queens, N.Y., native, Provost Haynes grew up with a love of books and the spoken word, which she attributes to her West Indian heritage. She has passed on that love of learning to her three daughters – a doctor, a lawyer and an educator – whom she raised as a divorced single parent. “Parenting is a training ground for being a good CEO,” she maintains. Acting on her belief that a sound education is the key to realizing one’s dreams, Provost Haynes is dedicated to creating an urban campus whose varied pathways help students to realize theirs. As head of a doctoral-granting institution, Provost Haynes has achieved many of her dreams both as an educator and a parent. Today, she oversees one of the most diverse campuses in the country, with more than 11,000 students, managing an annual budget of over $160 million. Provost Haynes has led her institution through a remarkable renaissance: doubling student enrollment, creating new facilities, diversifying faculty, forging links with the community and transforming the Campus into a vibrant urban academic center. One of the Provost’s visions – a modern performing arts center for the students and the community – became a reality in 2005. The centerpiece of the new complex is the wood-paneled, 320-seat Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts, where cutting-edge and traditional dance, music and theater performances regularly draw standing-room-only crowds from the Campus and the surrounding region.

John Suarez Director of Athletics

John Suarez enters his 13th year as director of athletics at Long Island University, where he has overseen a dramatic growth of the school’s athletic department. During his tenure, Suarez has witnessed a sensational rise in the Blackbirds’ on-field success with 27 Northeast Conference championships and 22 NEC Coach of the Year awards. Under his guidance, Long Island captured its first-ever NEC Women’s Commissioner’s Cup in 2006 and posted its best overall finish in over 20 years with a third-place standing in 2008-09. Academic success has also been a priority in Suarez’s tenure. The department posted its highest cumulative grade-point average in over 20 years of record keeping with a 3.14 mark following the 2008-09 school year. It was the eighth consecutive year that the department’s cumulative GPA was above 3.0. In addition, LIU has been cited with two National Graduation Awards sponsored by USA Today and has had its programs regularly recognized by the NCAA for its Academic Progress Rate scores. Suarez has also spearheaded the department as it has made major improvements to its facilties. The 2006 opening of the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center culminated a decade of facility improvement at the Brooklyn Campus. The $45 million facility houses as 2,500-seat arena, an NCAA regulation-size swimming pool and a state-of-the-art fitness center. The WRAC also features a wellness center that is geared toward a growing Brooklyn community. The Wellness Center came on the heels of other improvements that included the addition of lights to LIU Field in 1999, FieldTurf in 2001 and bleachers for softball and baseball in 2003. Suarez has also overseen upgrades to the weight room, locker rooms and scoreboards. Suarez’s work is not done, as there are plans to further upgrade to the Blackbirds’ facilities, including an extensive redesign of LIU Field and the addition of a bubble atop the Wellness Center, covering the track and tennis courts. With a keen eye toward the future, Suarez has been mindful of LIU’s past. He helped spearhead the creation of the LIU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 with 11 inaugural members, as well as the reestablishment of the Blackbird Club in 2002. Suarez has also continued to make his presence felt outside the downtown Brooklyn campus. He is currently on the national board of officers for the NCAA Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association. He previously served on the NCAA Management Council from 2003-06 and was a member of the Division I Budget Committee from 2004-06. Prior to that, Suarez was on the NCAA Championship Cabinet from 2000-03 and served as chair of the NEC Athletic Directors Committee from 2000-02.

Suarez arrived following a three-year stint as athletics director at Mercer County College in Trenton, N.J., which won two national championships and produced 11 regional titles in that span. Eighty percent of the athletes in his time attended four-year schools and every team produced a winning record during his last two years.

Suarez earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he competed on the baseball team. He completed his master’s in sports management at East Stroudsburg University.

The campus’ athletic training staff is dedicated to the prevention, rehabilitation and recovery needs of over 200 student-athletes for the school’s 18 athletic teams. Headed by three full-time athletic trainers, the staff consists of several graduate and undergraduate trainers who are enrolled in LIU’s renowned athletic training program. Due to the extreme availability of the training program’s resources, LIU’s athletic trainers strive to place great attention and detail on each athlete in order to provide the best care possible. The sports medicine staff prides themselves on not only providing the best injury-specific plan of care, but also ensuring that the athlete’s long-term health goals are met. In the winter of 2005, a state-of-the-art Athletic Training Room opened in the Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. It is fully equipped with the latest modalities and rehabilitative equipment to ensure the needs of each individual student-athlete are fully met. The new Athletic Training Room allows the LIU sports medicine staff to conduct all short-term and post-operative rehabilitation on-site. The staff also works in conjunction with LIU’s Center for Physical Rehabilitation in order to utilize a HydroWorx therapy pool. The Wellness Center also houses resources and programs to promote the health of community residents. Cardiac rehabilitation, orthopedic therapy and asthma education services are available. In addition to providing treatment and rehabilation, the athletic training staff provides education to student-athletes regarding health matters and concerns in order to aid students in achieving optimum health and conditioning. Danny O’Connor has directed the sports medicine program since being promoted to head trainer in 2001. O’Connor, who started with LIU as a graduate student in 1994, and is staff are responsible for maintaining the operation of the athletic training room. His office coordinates the medical coverage and the administering of the athletic department’s drug education and testing program. The athletic trainers also schedule appointments with the program’s physician, coordinate preseason physical exams and design treatment and rehabilitation programs. O’Connor and his staff consult regularly with athletic department orthopedic surgeon Dr. Howard Levy, a doctor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. Levy and a network of medical staff, mostly from Lenox Hill, work closely with LIU athletes to meet their surgical and rehabilitative needs.

Richard James

The strength and conditioning program at Long Island University is designed to help student-athletes maximize their athletic potential and performance while reducing the risk of injury. Coordinated by Richard James, a former Blackbird and All-American in the 400-meter dash, specialized workout programs are tailored to enhance athletes’ physical abilities in their specific sports, as each sport places different demands on the body. Included in his regimen are weight training, power and speed training, flexibility training, plyometrics and conditioning. James, who represented Jamaica in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens and holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from Long Island, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a U.S.A. Weightlifting Performance Specialist. The weight training room is located in the new state-of-the art Wellness, Recreation and Athletic Center. The facility houses not only a fitness center equipped with the latest equiment - from stationary bikes with built in televisions to a full weight station - but also a separate weight room especially geared for student-athletes. There is a full range of equipment to meet the diverse needs of each student-athlete from preseason conditioning to the offseason variety. Treadmills and stationary bikes, free weights and press machines are just some of the pieces of equipment which make it one of the most complete facilities in the Northeast Conference. Nora Mavashev Academic Enhancement Coordinator

The balancing of academic achievement and athletic success is the primary concern of LIU’s Department of Athletics. The University’s student-athlete academic services are designed to help the department fulfill its commitment to all student-athletes in their pursuit of academic excellence. At LIU, there is a high priority placed on academic integrity, along with an opportunity to take advantage of extraordinary academic programs. The goal of the LIU Athletic Department is to give student-athletes an avenue to seek help, whether it be for tutorial assistance, scheduling of classes, personal or career development or to improve on their test-taking and time-management skills. In her sixth year, Nora Mavashev is responsible for monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes, ensuring they meet and exceed the University’s academic goals in compliance with NCAA and institutional standards. In conjunction with the director and senior associate director of athletics, Mavashev has formed close relationships with the academic advisement office and counseling center to assist the student-athlete in negotiating the demands of daily practices and games. The athletic department had an overall grade point average this past year of 3.14. During the 2008-09 academic year, 15 of the 18 teams posted cumulative averages above 3.00. There were 111 student-athletes (58 percent) who had a cumulative GPA above 3.00 and 32 student-athletes (17 percent) with GPAs above 3.50. Over 100 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll and for the second straight year, the NCAA announced Public Recognition Awards for the academic work of the women’s golf, indoor track and field and cross country teams. In additon, the men’s golf and soccer teams earned NEC Team Academic Awards. The University has twice been recognized by the NCAA and USA Today for having the highest graduation rate in the nation as compared to the remainder of the student body.
