01 DRIFT HOTEL ISU Interior Design Studio Work,2014 South Beach, Miami, USA Group Work: Lu Liu, Zoe Bick, Ashley Wire, Amanda Roth Instructor: Jason Alread, Cigdem T. Akkurt

The Drift Hotel is aimed to become a landmark at South Beach and standout from surrounding famous hotels by its extreme skinny proportion. Setting all the guest rooms along one side, it creates as many opportunities as possible for guest to visually connect with outdoor space. The restless entertainment is the dominant elements in Miami culture. The landscape, cabanas and private bungalows are spread out on the rest part of the site. It activates the whole site by diverse activities of guests, which responds to the local culture appropriately. Only 15 minutes from Miami’s business and shopping districts, this lush tropical island provides the perfect setting for a hotel, spa and venue where business meets pleasure. The Island’s beautiful beaches and nature create an ideal oasis easily accessible from the busy city. Bringing the outside in, motifs and materials are drawn from South Beach, Miami and traditional floral textiles provide the inspiration and patterns to convey the warmth of the island. The environment reflects the influence of the island’s culture, sensibility and surroundings while keeping chic fun of the Drift brand in the forefront.

Communal Connection Units are aggregated to form residual community spaces of decompression which contrast the confined, hyper-efficient personal units. A void in the center of the building serves as a zone of decompression for the building’s residential occupants. Multilevel courts and seating areas break the void into smaller areas for personal gatherings.

Vertical Section views

Lu Liu Summer 2014 Portfolio

Front Entrance The Drift hotel creates broad entrance space for parking and loading. The spatial condition captures the tremendous height of the building in a forced vertical perspective reminiscent of French Gothic architecture.

Entrance Hall

The Drift hotel bordering programs are noticeably confined and dark. High contrast between spaces and features heightens the interior experience and promotes movement towards the central garden

Lobby Corridor

Contrasting the monolithic concrete exterior of the natatorium, the north faรงade celebrates the connection of soft materials and indirect natural light to connect the interior gallery with an adjoining park beyond.

Palm Tree Garden

Palm Trees are planted by a grid and a driveway leading into a lush tropical garden

Infinity Pool Infinite Pool is built on the second floor with giant open view to all around. It vertically cut the hotel landscape but also divide the hotel into several districts. A series of compartments improves functioning of special area. It reflects the Drift lifestyle and design philosophies. The Infinity Pool features 3,000 square foot of beauty, peace and quiet overlooking the hotel from the top of pool.

Me Gustaria (Cuban Restaurant) The backyard wall is composed of reclaimed wood, Corten steel and a two-story green wall. The reclaimed wood was salvaged from buildings being demolished in east Miami which were built in the early 1900′s. Corten steel adds both an earthly quality and the patina of time. The two-story green wall reflects the ardent hills that embrace this seaside community, as well as an interest in sustainability among its residents.

Overlook Room (King Bedroom Studio) The king-bedroom within Drift Hotel Miami, with their floor-to-ceiling high glass windows, give a breathtaking panoramic view of the rooftops and terraces of South Beach creating an elegant and vibrant atmosphere. The furniture is mainly modern and clean with bright colour combinations. We wanted an expression that was playful and informal. Comfort, durability and of course the design was essential elements for selection of the furniture.

Overlook Room (King Bedroom Studio) Inspiration is drawn from nature, where you will find neutral base colour and bright colour accents and wood. Along with large graphic patterns in neutral color combinations in both ceiling and floor against the concrete look, we “break up the tight style of the exterior of the building, to create a calm, peaceful and luxury atmosphere.

Smart Glass “Smart Glass technologies controls the amount of light and heat transmission. When activated, the glass changes from transparent to translucent, blocking some or all wavelengths of light. It can save costs for heating, air-conditioning and lighting and avoid the cost of installing and maintaining motorized light screens or blinds or curtains. With smart glass, guest can be served with the best ocean view.

02 MARCEL BREUER ART MUSEUM ISU Interior Design Studio Work,2013 Ames, IA, USA Individual Work Instructor: Lee Cagley

The design of this art museum is a response to architect Marcel Breuer, and Japanese Culture. This space is used ultimately as an exhibition room and presents the architect's works we chose to expand design thinking and knowledge of color and patterns in interior design. In order to create a museum environment that integrates the existing urban, cultural context and museum experiences, the museum structure has been aligned to the existing Marcel's building features. The west facade: a continuous double glazed stone wall, is the main feature of the building. The display-window-like facade demonstrates my design approach of making the museum as a media of "observing and being observed".

Construction Design Concept

Rhythm Mutation Cellular Geometrical Concrete Contrast

Inspired by Marcel Breuer's work whose mainly features we found included shape angles, definite geometric shape, and mutation of regular geometrical shapes. His style tend to be masculist which showed with a space connect both exterior and interior spaces. Therefore, two elements were utilized to accomplish this space are light and wall shell. The shape of both windows and walls created a new experience for viewer to view interior space which is influenced by exterior spaces. The light from both outside and room both improve the special feeling of a space in addition, we try to follow his work style of Mutation, so that we set up two different buildings with varies layers to show its unique features.

Color & Material Concept

Natural Color Implied Wood Craft Tatami Luxuriant

In considering out main color scheme, we were highly inspired by Japanese pattern. The mainly color scheme from Japanese culture are red, gold, and black which shows a noble and magnificent atmosphere. In considering of Japanese pattern, we mainly use wood, and Tatami with natural color to improve its visible effects.

Conceptual Model Development

Before confronting the logistical, ecological, and physical complexity of urban and natural fabric, the project engaged in a brief, intense, speculative exercise on the literal nature of fabric and transformation, with the goal of establishing a common, and provocative graphic, spatial and tectonic language for the finished design approach.

Lu Liu Summer 2014 Portfolio

Main Entrance

The museum was carefully designed to create a unique atomosphere for various experiences of entering. The main entrance facing the plaza is surrounded by the pounds and hidden by groups of conifers. A courtyard surrounded by the wood, stone and plant provides a warm and familiar atomosphere.

Ceiling

The ceiling is inspired from Japanese pattern with real light inside, which goes through the black part of the pattern.

Wall

Based on the ceiling design, the wall extends the ceiling pattern, and be a unconspicuous background.

Floor

The floor is made of traditional Japanese red wood, which is most representative floor used in Japanese architecture.

Ceiling

The ceiling draws inspiration from Shoji, which are Japanese screens made with a wood frame of translucent paper. Shoji are used as windows and room dividers. It allows natural diffused light into rooms while providing privacy.

Walls

Japanese interior design often uses the natural colors of materials such as wood, bamboo, paper and rice straw. Other colors introduced into the design tend to be subdued neutral palettes, incorporating blacks, off-whites, grays and browns.

Floor

Tatami are traditional Japanese floors made of rice straw matsw. In the past, most Japanese floors were tatami. In modern Japan, apartments and houses with one or two tatami rooms continue to be popular.

03 OLO YORGURT STUDIO ISU Interior Design Studio Work,2012 Ames, IA, USA Individual Work Instructor: Lee Cagley

This project was tasked with developing the brand identity, including logo design and demographic targeting, in addition to full architectural services for a new startup in Ames called Olo Yogurt Studio. Despite the small scale and limited budget, I recognized that many people will interact with this space and opportunities for architectural experimentation were are available here anywhere. The Overall theme of the restaurant is greatly influenced by the beautiful movement of milk drop’ droping. It is an alternative to fast service movement which promotes traditional cuisine pattern to a fresh self-serve pattern. The main purpose of the design was to encourage people to discover a eco-friendly and lively environement rather than a rush and intensity life of the big city. The design of OLO yogurt shop is a response to the American cultural foundation, which designed as a playful interior with bright yellow, orange, and green colors.Customed furnitures which drew inspiration from milk drop shape are placed in space depicting people enjoying the yummy yogurt.

Lu Liu Summer 2014 Portfolio

“Milk Drop” Series Custom Furniture The design concept mainly draws inspiration from forms of “milk drop” and “milk crown”, which represents a feeling of pure, fresh and dynamic. This Milk drop chair is made of glazed plastic and inspired by gravity and the idea that a milk drop falling into the cup.
