PREPARING FOR THE NEXT WAVE OF CHANGE

WELCOM

STEVEN BREESE, DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF ARTS, COMMUNICATIONS & DESIGN

What will the world look like in five years? Ten years? 25 years? And what do we need to do to prepare our students for that world? Technology has been a game-changer, no doubt, but adopting new technologies is only the beginning. The “Makers” and the “Doers” are now front and center—those who inspire with their imagination, critical thinking, and creative application. These are the 21st century skills embodied by the students of CACD: the artists, performers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

STUDENTS LEARN FROM THE BEST Just a short ride from NYC, we attract to our campus the very finest working artists for your teachers, mentors, and role-models. These outstanding faculty-artists teach through doing. It is this hands-on, student-centered experience that sets LIU Post apart from other colleges and universities. You won’t simply learn – you will live the professional experience that will prepare you for a career in the rapidly expanding creative economy.

CREATIVITY

E

Whenever we glance at our cell phone, turn on a computer, flip on a television, or plugin to music we are interacting with creative content. It permeates our society and is a vital part of our day-to-day existence. From concept to completion, CACD students engage in making high-quality content every day. It is a creative act, to be sure, but it also requires technical skill, collaboration, organization, communication, critical analysis, and a healthy dose of problem solving. These skills, alongside and in concert with specific disciplinary expertise, allow our students to develop the professional content that we all want, need, and expect today and for years to come.

WHAT’S NEXT? Our students are forward-looking and ready to challenge the status quo. Savvy and entrepreneurial, “good enough” is never good enough for CACD students. They strive for excellence in all that they do. I often challenge our students to use their artistic voices and intellectual firepower to invent the future. They will. Our job is to offer them the resources, mentoring, and support that will best position them for success. I invite you to join our talented students and dedicated faculty in CACD. I can’t wait to see what you will do next.

he Department of Theatre, Dance and Arts Management provides intense, demanding and rigorous professional training for actors, dancers, choreographers, lighting and sound specialists; teachers and musical theatre performers; company managers, stage managers, producers and agents.

ARTS MANAGEMENT

THEATRE ARTS

A blockbuster exhibit opens in a museum. A world famous singer packs a concert hall for a magical night of music. A local arts council offers instruction in the arts to children. Arts managers make all these things happen. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Arts Management provides competency in the fine arts with a solid foundation in business. The program develops skills in critical thinking, leadership, management, planning and finance.

Few art forms are as expressive and personal as dance—and few have the same power to inspire, delight, and communicate across cultures. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Studies at LIU Post is an excellent foundation for a career in dance performance, dance education or dance criticism. A preprofessional, process-based and performance-oriented program, this degree explores the wide variety of roles for dance professionals and surveys the world’s great dance traditions, from African and Asian dance to modern, jazz, ballet and tap. The BFA in Dance Studies teaches the art form and not just technique.

The Theatre Arts programs are designed to help you place theatre within the wider context of humanistic studies. The curriculum covers the broad-based study of theatre history and literature, acting, dance, design, directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, management and technical production. Classes are small and faculty members provide a supportive environment for you to develop as an individual artist. LIU Post theatre arts majors are active participants in the Post Theatre Company, which produces plays and musicals for the public and campus community.
