ACTION AT LIU POST As the setting for multiple Hollywood shoots and an incubator for award-winning student and faculty television and film productions, LIU Post is the top school in the region for media arts studies.
New York is the new Hollywood. With the world’s most recognizable skyline, an enormous pool of entertainment industry talent and resources, and one of the best film tax incentive programs in the nation, New York has lured production east and become the top shooting location for big and small screens. But despite recent evidence to the contrary, not all television and film productions can be set in Brooklyn.
Royal Pains (Pell Hall served as Hamptons Heritage Hospital), and Tate Donovan (filming the pilot episode of Hostages). Most recently, the casts of Blue Bloods and Blindspot were on campus.
If you thought you recognized that CIA building in Madam Secretary, or felt oddly nostalgic during a hospital scene in Royal Pains, there is a reason for that sense of déjà vu. Over the past few years, location scouts seeking a lush, country look and feel have gravitated to LIU Post.
LIU Post’s “big break” moment came with the premiere of The Rewrite, a romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei. Filmed on the Brookville campus, The Rewrite features Grant as an Oscar-winning screenwriter who, broke and in a creative slump, reluctantly takes a job as a professor at Binghamton University where he becomes emotionally entangled with the students in his screenwriting class.
The active demand for Post as a filming location provides opportunity for students to observe working sets and interact with professionals in the film and television business. And yes, meet celebrities. The guest list of star sightings includes Kevin Bacon (The Following filmed on campus and used parking lots for a basecamp), Tea Leoni (Madam Secretary transformed the Tilles Atrium into their CIA HQ), Henry Winkler and the cast of

- PARENTS WEEKEND -
READY FOR
An Adventure? —
Show your family Long Island’s charm. We planned your weekend.
4. wander a village
1. In Vino Veritas
Visit liwines.com for a list of vineyards, locations, transportation, and tours.
Roslyn is a beautiful, historic village, nestled in the hills of Long Island’s Gold Coast. It is situated on Hempstead Harbor, and at one time was an active mercantile port. Roslyn is known for its collection of beautifully restored houses and buildings, historic monuments, and vibrant Downtown which is filled with many unique shops and restaurants. Finish the day with a movie at the Roslyn Theatre.
2. The End
5. INDULGE
Did you know Long Island is home to 25 lighthouses?
6. Farm Fresh
The fertile soils of the North Fork are ripe with vineyard vines and their distinctive and award-winning wines. With more than 60 vineyards to choose from—many featuring beautiful grounds to explore and live music to enjoy while tasting the vintages—the spring, summer, and fall are prime for a day trip to Long Island’s East End.
A day (or weekend) trip to Montauk is a summertime must. After a pit-stop for lobster rolls at the Lobster Roll (obviously), cruise down Old Montauk Highway for a scenic view of the Atlantic breaking against the shore. Stop for a stroll and souvenirs in the village, then keep heading east (if you hit the ocean, you went too far). The Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York and offers an incredible panorama from its peak. Take a walk down the paths to the cove and take the Money Pond Trail or Seal Halout Hike (great spot for snooping on lazy harbor seals in the colder months).
3. Step Into The Past
In the early 20th century, industrialists and bankers, benefiting from America’s second industrial revolution, sought to outdo each other with the size and ostentation of their castles. Astor, Guggenheim, Morgan, Roosevelt, Vanderbilt, and other capitalists with seemingly inexhaustible resources erected homes in practically every architectural style imaginable, often raiding the great homes of antiquity in Europe to acquire ornate decorative and structural components that soon were installed in Long Island palaces.
At the center of fashion and lifestyle is the Americana Manhasset, a high-end, open-air shopping center located in Manhasset, N.Y., just 15 minutes from LIU Post. It is the largest and best known shopping center in the area. International fashion designer labels and luxury goods companies—Tom Ford, Dior, Cartier, Bottega Veneta, Donna Karan, Fendi, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, MaxMara, St. John, Tiffany & Co., Prada and 60 other retail stores and two restaurants comprise the “Miracle Mile.”
Summer without sweet local Long Island corn is not summer at all. Along the quaint, farm-lined country roads that lead to Orient Point (the eastern most tip of the North Fork), you’ll find countless farm stands. Pick up fresh small-batch cheeses made with milk from the goats and cows grazing in the fields, farm fresh eggs, organic veggies, potatoes, gigantic heirloom tomatoes, pick your own strawberries, sunflowers, and don’t head back without a warm homemade pie!

Long Island Sound
Surfing may not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about New York, but Long Island’s unique geography (jutting out into the Atlantic, catching the tail end of the Gulf Stream) produces some stellar breaks and a vibrant surf culture. Whether you’re an experienced goofyfooter or a toes-to-nose novice, a day spent floating on a board out on the ocean is one well spent. Check the surf report (surfline.com/surf-cams-and-reports/), grab your gear, and paddle out on one of these nearby swells.

Long Beach
Long Beach breaks are so steady the beach hosts an annual pro surf contest every September. The swell at Lincoln Boulevard is perfect for beginners. Rent a board and gear at nearby Unsound Surf Shop (unsoundsurf.com). Long Beach, conveniently located just a few blocks from the LIRR, is also a destination for non-surfing beachgoers, with miles of newly constructed boardwalk, shops, restaurants, and nightlife.
Fire Island National Seashore
No cars allowed on this 30-mile stretch of National Park barrier island. Composed of 20 communities—including LGBTQ+ summer destinations of Cherry Grove and The Pines, as well as the popular village Ocean Beach, known for beach volleyball, share houses, sunny outdoor eateries, and perpetual reggae music wafting in the salty air—Fire Island is accessible only by ferry, departing from Bay Shore, Sayville, and Patchogue. You can also drive to the westernmost beaches—Robert Moses— and walk to the Lighthouse.

Grab some friends and head east for an endless summer search for the perfect break and a special taste of surf culture at The End. Very busy on summer weekends, crowds thin in the early fall while the water remains warm. Ditch Plains beach, Turtle Cove, and the Lighthouse are popular with the local surfers, but not recommended for any but serious surfers. Newbies can take lessons at Ditch with local surf instructors. Don’t set up a beach head without first stopping at Herb’s Market for a bucket of their famous fried chicken.
Georgica Beach
Among the most picturesque of the Hamptons’ renowned beaches, Georgica is home to swimming, sailing, and a prime fishing spot on the jetty. Georgica also attracts many of the Hamptons’ most famous residents and visitors, making it an ideal people-watching locale.
