Roc Nation partners with Brooklyn’s LIU to launch new school By MESFIN FEKADU

NEW YORK (AP) — Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment company is partnering with Brooklyn’s Long Island University to launch the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment. The new school will begin enrolling students for the fall 2021 semester, and 25% of the incoming freshmen class will receive Roc Nation Hope Scholarships. Hope Scholars will graduate without any debt. Jay-Z, a 22-time Grammy winner and entertainment mogul, was born and raised in Brooklyn. He launched Roc Nation in 2008 and the company has worked with some of the top players in music, including Rihanna, Alicia Keys, DJ Khaled, J. Cole, Megan Thee Stallion, Lil Uzi Vert and more. The company also partnered with the NFL and co-produced this year’s Emmynominated halftime show with Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. Roc Nation Sports was founded in 2013 and has worked with many athletes. Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez called the new partnership with LIU “a true investment in our community and young people in Brooklyn, in New York City, and beyond.” “We’re excited that The Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will provide unique insight, knowledge and experiences for students and introduce the world to the next generation of unmatched talent,” Perez continued in her statement Tuesday. The Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will offer undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship and production, and sports management. The school will begin accepting applications this fall for the fall 2021 semester and Roc Nation Hope Scholarship recipients will be selected from a group of academically competitive, need-based first-time freshmen from New York. “Our proximity in and around New York City’s epicenter of music and sports clearly positions us to offer unparalleled experiential learning and access to professional opportunities that will launch students to success,” LIU President Dr. Kimberly Cline said in a statement. “We look forward to joining with Roc Nation to offer an unprecedented educational resource that opens up the entertainment and sports world to a new and eager generation.” In addition to learning from professors, students will also engage with guest artists and lecturers and will gain hands-on experience through internships.

4

The school will also offer resources to high school students and those younger: Starting in spring 2021, the school will launch summer residential camps for high schoolers and Saturday programs for students ages 10-18 that focus on music and sports management. Those programs will begin in spring 2021 and scholarships will be available for need-based students.

Roc Nation School Of Music, Sports & Entertainment Empowers Young Talent Of Tomorrow BY: Andrea Zarczynski Grammy Award-winning rap star and business entrepreneur Jay-Z is cultivating the next generation of music industry leaders in his hometown of Brooklyn. This week the artist’s Roc Nation global entertainment company and nationally-ranked Long Island University (LIU) announced a new collaboration to launch the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment. The new school, which this fall will begin accepting students for the fall 2021 semester at LIU’s Brooklyn campus, is offering 25% of incoming freshman a Roc Nation Hope Scholarship to support a debt-free education. Beginning in spring of 2021, summer residential camps (offering need-based scholarships) for high schoolers and year-round Saturday programs for children ages 10-18 will inspire young talent to become changemakers in music and sports management. "This partnership, envisioned alongside LIU President Dr. (Kimberly) Cline, is a true investment in our community and young people in Brooklyn, in New York City and beyond,” Roc Nation CEO Desiree Perez said in an announcement. “We're excited that the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will provide unique insight, knowledge and experiences for students and introduce the world to the next generation of unmatched talent." Brett Yormark, Roc Nation’s president of business operations and strategy, says that the company enjoys a long-standing working relationship with LIU, and music and sports remain a priority for Cline and the LIU Board of Trustees. He also says that expansion beyond the new Brooklyn school in collaboration with LIU would be considered. Brooklyn’s Roc Nation school will offer undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship and production, and sports management. Students will build a network of professional contacts through visits by guest artists and lecturers, immersive internships and hands-on experience in various fields. “Our proximity in and around New York City’s epicenter of music and sports clearly positions us to offer unparalleled experiential learning and access to professional 8

opportunities that will launch students to success,” Cline said in a statement. “We look forward to joining with Roc Nation to offer an unprecedented educational resource that opens up the entertainment and sports world to a new and eager generation.” Hope Scholarship recipients will be selected among New York-based, high academic achievers who are also first-time freshmen demonstrating the highest need to receive individualized support and mentorship. Both the new school’s scholarships and programs will empower students who might otherwise never be exposed to or consider a career in music, given the steady decline of arts education amidst budget cuts in U.S. schools. Community music programs also keep students connected to the arts. Michael Sticka, president of the Grammy Museum, the Recording Academy’s official foundation that oversees the academy’s educational initiatives, agrees that the music community must join together and help prepare its future leaders. “As the leader of a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to support music education, we are always thrilled to hear about new schools and programs that will inspire and foster music’s next generation of creators and leaders.”

Jay-Z, Roc Nation open new school of entertainment management at Long Island University By MICHAEL ELSEN-ROONEY

One of Brooklyn’s most famous exports is behind a new college program in his home borough. Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entertainment company, which manages athletes and artists, is partnering with Brooklyn’s Long Island University to start a school of entertainment management set to open in fall 2021. “We’re excited that the Roc Nation School of Music, Sports & Entertainment will provide unique insight, knowledge and experiences for students and introduce the world to the next generation of unmatched talent,” said company CEO Desiree Perez. The new school will be a “a true investment in our community and young people in Brooklyn, in New York City, and beyond,” she added. The school will be housed at the 15,000-student Long Island University in downtown Brooklyn, and will offer undergraduate degrees in music, music technology, entrepreneurship and production, and sports management, according to The Associated Press. Jay-Z, who grew up in the Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant, founded Roc Nation in 2008 and has signed on big-name artists including Rihanna and Alicia Keys. An offshoot, Roc Nation Sports, opened in 2013 to represent athletes. The company partnered with the NFL this year to produce a Miami halftime show featuring Shakira and Jennifer Lopez. A quarter of the students in the inaugural Roc Nation class will be given full rides based on financial need and merit, company officials said. The financial support, which the school has dubbed the “Hope Scholarship” will target promising high-schoolers from New York. Officials at Long Island University say the college’s location in the heart of Brooklyn will give students a range of opportunities for jobs, internships and networking. “Our proximity in and around New York City’s epicenter of music and sports clearly positions us to offer unparalleled experiential learning and access to professional opportunities that will launch students to success,” LIU President Kimberly Cline said in a statement. “We look forward to joining with Roc Nation to offer an unprecedented educational resource that opens up the entertainment and sports world to a new and eager generation.” 10

In addition to regular course loads with full-time professors, the school will incorporate guest lectures from artists. Younger students will also get the chance to bone up on their music and entertainment knowledge through the school, officials said. Residential summer camps focused on sports and music management skills for kids ages 10 to 18 will open in spring 2021, and will also include need-based scholarships.

Roc Nation said it would provide 25 percent of its students with scholarships so that they graduate with no student debt. It plans to offer education about performing arts and the business side of entertainment and sports.
