Project 1

HOUSE WITH COURTYARD

The design is located in the building group built in Republic of China period. In the mean while, they are mixed up with some modern buildings. How to support the balance between tradition and modernization and also create comfortable and practical living space is the theme to discuss.

Scheme

Design Brief 1. A relatively independent of the space for creation 2. Timber-framed structure 3. As much as possible to reduce the interference from outside

?

This design gets inspiration from the traditional brick and wood structure, which divides residence and courtyard in 3D.

In order to make the house's space reserved, it learns from the "hole structure" of Suzhou Gardens. A round gap is designed to communicate Internal and external.

Roof construction - Granule-surfaced bitumen felt, 2 layers - Plywood 30 mm - Timber joists, 40 x 270 mm with 150 mm cavity, and 120 mm thermal insulation in between - Plywood (airtight membrane) 15 mm Total

336 mm

Debut

The quality and the texture of the material reveals the meaning of the house. The exterior of the house adopts the plain concrete to restrict living space to peaceful atmosphere and then make the wood as interior material to attain the amiable feelings.

The design is located in the downtown area in Nanjing. According to the commercial activities needed, it's going to be designed as a city complex with the theme of jewelry and noble metal. How to utilize this theme to do well business planning, thereby make it not only a building, but also a symbol of that district is what I'm trying.

Scheme Taiping South Road in Nanjing is the area which mainly engaged in gold and silver jewelry in history. But with the change of commercial center, this area sufferred business recession. Now the road broadening and the metro constructing will be the turning point for this area to resurge.

Begin with the saling of jewelry, I try to do a business planning, which uses the diamond ring as imagery, building a ferris wheel on the theme of proposing. It creats a unique place to propose and also lead the business.

In modeling, special-shaped structure is used. It not only echoes existing buidings' roof style, but also create an image of diamond, promoting highend commercial atmosphere.

About the arrowhead of commercial, in stead of traditional courtyard, the bottom of swimming pool in clubhouse is used to be the skylight cover. It creates unique commercial atmosphere.

Structure Triangular grid is well combined with the ferris wheel and makes the flowing commercial space in the lower part.

SUSTAINABLE ATCHITECTURE DESIGH

The design is a kind of research to find the way to design suntainable architecture. It begins with searching related information and calculation and develops by high level of logical thinking. With time passes by, it can be flexible and changable to satisfy with different users and needs.

Scheme

Aim: To built an 100,000m2 sustainable building

Architectual concept: Reduce the height of building Put grid in Make it flexible

Sustainable concept: Flexible Prototype 1: one super highrise building 2000m2 per floor - 50 floors

Prototype 2: several towers with one   podium 3 towers with 33 floors

Prototype 3: one huge block   16000m2 per floor ─ 6 floors

Flexible in site

Analysis: ─ spend too much money (RMB 5000 per square    meter) ─ consume more energy  to build (steel consumption:   200kg/m2)

Analysis: ─ spend too much money (RMB 2000 per square    meter) ─ consume more energy  to build (steel consumption:   90kg/m2)

Analysis: ─ spend less money (RMB 1000 per square    meter) ─ consume less energy   to build (steel consumption:   90kg/m2) ─ use less material in elevators

Flexible to extend

Scheme

Function mix concept

Grid The function selection is based on the criteria that the building needs little traffic. These people, we assume, are young people. We mix up working area and living area, so the energy used in traffic can be saved. The functions are: housing, eating, shopping, sporting and entertainment. The proportion comes from the area per person of each function.

Conventional function-mix pattern

Disadvantages of conventional function-mix 1. Sunlight Some functions like apartment don't get enough sunlight while others like shopping, don't need much sunlight.

Analysis: we analysis the schedules of young people on week and weekend days. We can see that they spend most of time in apartments and office.

2. To much traffic People will use elevators to get to destination. It will consume both energy and time.

Solution

Scheme

STEP 3

STEP 4

Optimize the height of the building

Put a courtyard in

0. First, we choose the best direction in Zhenjiang based on the Ecotect's calculation

A square of 32m X 32m with a courtyard of 12m X 12m

Position Apartment need higher requirements than shopping because of sunlight and ventilation. So we consider the position of apartment firstly. 1. This is our calculation for the first time. We can see that some of the apartments couldn't get directly sunlight.

Why it is a square? 1. Flexible We can arrange space in different direction. 2. Saving energy With same area, the total length of the facade of a square is shorter than a rectangle. So we can save material in envelop.

2. Then, we change the height of the building.

Why it is a 32 x 32m with a court of 12 x 12m ?

share space multi-function hall corridor

1. It is flexible for apartment, hotel and office, for the depth of space is 10m (8m for room and 2m for corridor). 2. The courtyard can be easily used as share space for hotel and office. Also it can be used as multi-function hall for office.

3. We change again to get better sunlight. It looks pretty good : )

Scheme

STEP 5

STEP 6

Optimize the position of the building

Position of public space

Problem: direct eye sight disturbing

We create some street and yard into it to make the space more interesting. At the same time, we need avoid the shaft of upper storey. Solution: changing the position

summer wind direction winter wind direction

And some large outdoor space is also needed. We choose the position of public space according to the wind derection.

We still should make some activity space inside group for the residents. These two plazas have different circlumlation with the large public space.

Function Flexibility

─Why do we choose young people ? From the survey data we can see that, China is going to have an aging society. But big city in Jiangsu Province like Zhenjiang's population is still raising rapidly, which indicates that huge labor force(mainly young people)flooded into city. This phenomenon on one hand will slow down the aging society currently, on the other hand the situation will become even worse when young people getting old. That's why we choose young people as our target population now. We hope our building can meet one young people's demand in his whole life, which can also adapt to the aging society.

ON MY WAY I'm crazy about travelling, especially East- asia travel. Because it will place myself in different traditions and cultures while there are still some common ground. When I think about the same thing from different points of view, new discoveries and experiences are helping me a lot to my design work.
