01 A Container of City Memory Revitalizing a Place for City Life Museum of Qilou Culture in Haikou Eight-week Studio Academic/ Individual Work Junior Year/ Fall Semester, 2013 Instructor: Prof. Xu Maoyan (xumaoyan@tsinghua.edu.cn) Qilou is a unique form of arcade architecture in Haikou, mostly built in the early 20th century by returned overseas Hainanese businessmen. The old Haikou town, where Qilou architectures gather, was once the most prosperous shopping area of Haikou and it flourished as the place of city life for citizens. Qilou culture not only refers to Qilou architecture, but also refers to the old city life. Yet this area has been left out by city development recent years, so does the old lifestyle. This project is intended to revitalize old Haikou town area as well as city memory of Qilou Culture by bringing a mutifunction museum in this area.

02
What is Qilou Culture:
Returned Overseas Hainanese Culture: most of these people made a long journey to Southeast Asia to look for fortune in their youth, with a wish of coming back in glory. The luckiest ones returned old and rich, others never found their way home. So Qilou architectures they built in their hometown are their lifetime achievements. The journey of coming home is their lifetime Odyssey.
Architecture and Urban Space: Qilou arcade is not only wellknown for its delicate combination of Chinese traditional style and western baroque style, but also for the arcade street space they formed by linear sequence strongly influence the pattern of the old Haikou city, thus forming an agreeable series of pedestrian systems both fit for local tropical climate and the prosperous commercial society.
City Memory and City Life: shopping and eating in the shadow of pedestrian arcades in Qilou streets were enjoyable memories of Haikou people. However, this unique tropical lifestyle has almost disappeared in the latest ten years due to the mass construction of shopping malls and the degeneration of this area.
City and Regional Development: Once this area was the most prosperous district of Haikou city for a whole century, not only because there gathered the most stylish boutique shops at that time in Haikou, but also because it is located near one of the most busiest port in Lingnan Area------ the Old Haikou Port. The development of old Haikou Town relied on its positon of trading and channel transfer center of Lingnan Area out to Southeast Asia since 17th century, and the expand of old Haikou Town witnessed this trend.
Urban Research & Strategies:
1.Undefined Left-out Space & Defined Yard for Public:The urban texture of this area consists mainly of linear plans with left-over spaces between them. There is not enough open space for public. The introduce of two courtyards could help with this problem. 2.Single Major Use & Multiple Major Use: The business pattern of this area is single, mostly cheap clothing and daily retail. The introduce of museums and other cultural facilities as well as mutiple shops could help build commercial diversity in this area.

3.Enclosure & Openness to Public:Qilou arcade is open to the public. However, the Qilou block is an enclosure. The project increased openness to public so as to introduce people into the courtyards within the block. 4.No Connection & Connection as a system:There is no connection between each neighbouring Qilou architecture. This project connects the whole museum area with a system of bridges. 1. Existing

Architecture Research & Strategies
1. The Old Haikou Port & The Image of Deck The material of steel and the image of Deck are in memory of the old Haikou Port. 2. Traditional Qilou Facade & New Facade The new facade was designed according to the old Qilou facade's proportion.

02 An Incubator of Urban Diversity Rebuilding an Industrial Ecosystem for Urban Regeneration Urban Design in Beijing Zoo Clothing Wholesale Market Eight-week Studio Academic/ Group Work (Partners: Yan Bo, Yuan Xuefeng) Senior Year/ Fall Semester, 2014 Instructor: Prof. Tan Zongbo (tan_zb@tsinghua.edu.cn) Beijing Zoo Clothing Wholesale Market lies across from Beijing Zoo, containing an area of 0.8 square kilometers, 8 individual buildings, in total 300,000 square meters of building area. It has been supplying cheap goods to clothing retailers in North China for more than twenty years. However, as the impact of online shopping's wiping out of intermediate profits, the merchants here are facing a challenge of homogenization of competition, making less and less profits to support the rising rents here. The clothing wholesale value chain can no longer match its value of location near Xizhimen, a prosperous business CBD in Beijing. Also, as to the function of wholesale, large amount s of cargo traffic come and go everyday, making this area a mess, by no means a delightful environment to stay. Beijing government has made a policy to evacuate Beijing Zoo Clothing Wholesale Market in 2013 and it should be finished by 2017. This Project is intended to rebuild an industrial ecosystem for this area, aiming at a potential existing market------ huge amounts of tourists to nearby spots as Beijing Zoo. 07

03 A Connector of Multiple Urban Dimensions Building a public connecting system Urban Design of Xidan Square & Renovation of China Airline Building Eight-week Studio Academic/ Group Work (Partners: Wu Huili, Ke Kaili) Senior Year/ Fall Semester, 2014 Instructor: Prof. Zhu Wenyi (zhuwenyi@tsinghua.edu.cn)
Xidan is one of the most prosperous shopping area in Beijing. This project is intended to explore a way to renew China Airline Building and Xidan Square. China Airline Building used to be the place where people buy airline tickets. However as the online ticketing's impact, this traditional business is diminishing. Airline Building is now in a state of chaos business and management. Xidan Square is a macroscale open place with little popularity in citizens. Lacking sense of enclosure is the main cause for that. So our design aims to first attract people to our site by building a connecting system in this area and create enjoyable public spaces. Also, we replaced the ticketing service in Airline Building as a cultural service for public, including a China Airline Museum, altogether making this megastructure a cultural gallery.
15
Main Problems:
Mega-Structure Strategy:
1. Facades along Chang'an Street do not form street walls 2. Split with prosperous Xidan Shopping Malls 3. Xidan Square lacks the sense of enclosure 4. Macro-scales along Chang'an Street split with micro-scales in hutong
1. Enclose Xidan Square 2. Return the ground floor to public 3. Create a high platform for landscape 4. Connect macro-scales along Chang An Street and micro-scales in hutong

His profession is a designer. This project is intended to be a metaphor of him. The vertical cylinder is the spiritual space as well as the supporting structure of the architecture. The horizontal boxes contain the host's daily life. They are seperately working space, sleeping space and living space( a small gallery contained) from top to bottom. The orientation of each box is determined by different needs of sunlight in different times of day according to the host's daily routine and the track of sun's movement at the latitude of the place he lived.
