01. REBIRTH & REVITALIZATION

——Reconstruction of makasiiniranta port in southern Helsinki

In this project, the South Harbor of Helsinki, the capital of Finland, provides the citizens living in the neighborhood and the tourists with a comfortable space for walking and riding by re-planning the overall site. The jogging track and riding track are provided in the site to satisfy the demand of walking and riding. With the design of sites of various functions such as open-air theater, sport square, water playground, etc., citizens can have the spaces of fitness and rest, entertainment, reading and recreation. A new place for leisure walking, friendly riding and tourists sightseeing is built for people by expanding the public activity space and greening in the site. With consideration of the future sea level rise, the design of this project raises the overall design of the site. A water view platform and a plank road are designed on the coastal side and the height of the water view platform will change accordingly with the sea level rise. The overall design language of the project is the sea. With various abstract forms of sea water curves and water ripples extracted, Helsinki has earned her name as “the daughter of the Baltic Sea”. Coastal culture is the soul of the city. It is hoped that this coastal area will be built into an important landmark card of Helsinki through design so that vitality will be brought to the coastal area, the coastal environment will be optimized, public activity space and greening will be increased and popularity and new scenery will be created for the site.

—— Dynamic Transformation of Urban Public Space in Hong Kong This project is a renovation of Lok Hing Lane Garden, a public space in Central Hong Kong Island. Through research and analysis of the people who use the site at different times, the project has designed various functional areas. It is a humancentered approach that reflects the actual needs of the community, replacing the original single, outdated site form with a flexible and versatile design. It attracts all kinds of people to the site through the transformation of various functional areas and stimulates the site’s vitality. The site is more clearly zoned, and the resources are more rationally utilized. The redesigned site has been given a new function, providing a temporary dining area for office workers near the site, a playground for children, a gathering place for Filipino domestic workers, a place for young people to decompress and relax, etc. It significantly reduces space waste. The planning of the site and the addition of new platforms and installations have increased the amount of public space and greenery available to meet the daily needs of the community.

The stone-paved street next to the site has a characteristic granite pavement and is attractive for photoshoots. Facilities such as guide signs could be added.

The semi-open pavilion, a place for gathering and chatting and relaxing at weekends, is proposed to be transformed into a multi-functional pavilion that can be freely switched with the scene.

Filipino maids spend their holidays here at weekends, playing games, chatting, singing, and dancing, so we need to consider keeping the theatre stage as an event space.

On weekdays, office workers have lunch and occasionally chat in this area, so flexible facilities could be incorporated to meet various functional needs.

There is no cultural display area in the venue, and temporary exhibition viewing areas could be added.

On weekdays, teachers often bring kindergarten children to play in the lower open area of the amphitheater, so we can consider adding a play platform and play facilities.

Children

Climbing area for children’s coordination.

Design of the Multi-functional Pavilion

Mindmap Step 1: Create the basic frame and base of the pavilion according to the space available.

By analyzing the needs of the different users, the new nodes of the site are conceived in an out-of-the-box way to meet the needs of all types of users and achieve a more convenient and humane effect. It also helps supplement the missing functions of the site in a variable and multi-functional form.

Step 2: Refine the top structure of the pavilion and add the primary functional elements.

It can be used for resting and gathering during the week.

Step 3: Add shelter and privacy to the pavilion; refine the seating pattern to achieve versatility.

It can also be used as a temporary showroom when open.

Multi-level Platform

Bird View Perspective

The air-suspended platform provides a playground for children. It is divided into three themes: climbing, swings, and graffiti. The platforms are connected by steps, climbing nets, and slides. The graffiti theme area has a painting wall for temporary painting exhibitions. The platform is positioned above the semi-circular theater and provides shelter from the sun and rain.

Scenario Analysis

Put the modules together to form a large platform for gathering and playing games.

Divide the modules into podiums and seats to create a temporary outdoor practical classroom.

Open up the partitions and divide the modules into a stage and seats to create a temporary performance space.

Move the taller modules back to create a display case for public reading materials as a reading space.

Move the modular form of 4 small modules to the front to serve as a temporary dining table.

Open the partition as a display board and the module as a temporary display stand for temporary exhibitions.

——Renewal and Conservation of Dongxin Company’s Company Village

In this project, Hainan Wanning Dongxin Company Village is reconstructed. It complies with the concept of respecting and conforming to nature to protect the original ecological natural scenery of village. The local agricultural characteristics are highlighted upon development of modern agriculture to promote the combined development of multiple industries. The agricultural multiple attributes are developed to expand the non-agricultural function and to achieve the deep integration of "agriculture, tourism and culture". The fruit processing plants can make common fruits generate higher value through series of processing production, and then the products are sold to the local area and the whole country in the combination mode of online reservation and offline entity sales to bring economic benefits to the local people. Besides, the processing plants, guesthouses, catering, etc. will provide new employment positions for the local residents, and the local young people are encouraged to revitalize the hometown. After reconstruction, the fruit planting industry transforms from single mode into the complex integrated village integrating the fruit processing production, entertainment experience, literary tourism, science popularization education, curing vacation and guesthouse sharing.

Daily Activities Timetable I'm a farmer. The farming constitutes my daily life. I always enjoy staying together with family members and friends after a busy day. But except for home and doorstep, there is no other site for our relaxation.

At 11.30 I go home for lunch.

I get up and go to farm at 5 in the morning.

I'm a housewife. My daily life centers on the living of the whole family, cooking, laundry, babysitting, and fruit trees in court. As the children grow up day by day, there are no facilities and sites available for children playing, so they can only play the home-made toys at doorstep. I'm a student. I want to go out of the village through hard study because there are too few employment positions and very limited development prospect. I can find a job for a living and better development only in a city.

I get up at about 7 to make breakfast.

I get up at 6.30 every morning to go to school.

I work on fruit sales. I take good care of fruit trees in orchard, pick up the mellow fruits and sell them on the street to maintain the normal life of my husband and me. I usually get up at 5.30 to cook breakfast.

The daily activities of local residents are summarized after a survey of daily routines of the village representative figures at different age groups and with different identities. After farming and learning, their main incomes are from the fruit tree planting and some low-cost transaction, which is relatively single. Due to the lack of employment positions, most young people determine to work outside. Public facilities and spaces are insufficient on site for daily activities, rest and staying, children playing, etc.

Type Analysis

Overall Planning The planning layout of site can be considered from the following perspectives: 1.The fruit manufacturing factories are established near the fruit planting area to facilitate collection and processing of raw materials, and the position is near the main road to facilitate the outward transportation of processed products; 2.The catering and stores are established around the village in order to avoid disturbing the lives of residents and be available for them and to facilitate the arrival of tourists; 3.The guesthouse is close to the playing site so that tourists can play and have a rest in the guesthouse conveniently. The playing facilities are public and open to provide the local residents with the game and playing site of children; 4.As the freshwater aquaculture base, pond is partially developed as the fishing experience area; 5.The fruit planting area is partially developed as the picking experience area and the science popularization experience area where the local resources are utilized to develop the tourism experience project in many aspects.

Historic Buildings Along The Hutongs

——Design of Hutong Intensive Street Facilities The project will transform the Xirongxian Hutong and Da Liubukou Hutong in Xicheng District, Beijing, making them multi-functional and more popular, which can serve as resting space for the elderly, reading and talking space for young people, and entertainment space for children. In other words, the project will provide a good platform for interpersonal communication, which will improve the relationships of neighbors and enhance their interaction. Besides, it aims to enrich people’s lives by installing facilities, increasing public activity space and adding greenery. The original hutongs will be transformed by building public facilities, which will be placed in the limited open space outside the buildings as leisure facilities. According to William Morris’s view on a design’s functionality, we design two kinds of facilities on the sides of the hutongs, highlighting their functionality and practicality. The project can add vitality to the hutongs, improve the environment, and increase public space and greenery. In this way, the new hutongs can serve as a bridge for interpersonal communication.

1. Hutongs, a kind of ancient city alleys unique to Beijing, mostly run east-west, with thousands of them surrounding the Forbidden City. Originally formed in the Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (13681644) and Qing Dynasties (13361912), hutongs boast a history of hundreds of years. The hutongs in Beijing, seen as the veins of the city, are the living places of ordinary people in Beijing, where people's social lives have left their imprints. 2. Location features of the site: The two hutongs are located within the Second Ring Road, west of Beijing Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. They are adjacent to commercial streets, theaters and Financial Street. 3. Characteristics of the site: The site includes residential land, public service facilities, road land, commercial land, service industry land, hotel industry land and other types of land use.

Design scheme The space in the site is divided into two types: the open space outside the wall of the residential buildings and the open space at the corner of the residential buildings. The former is basically a strip of land for pedestrians and the latter is a square one, which is large enough for children to play games and for adults to rest and chat. The facilities with functions to rest, chat, read and play games have two sizes to match different space. Facilities of 2*1*2m will be placed in Da Liubukou Hutong, and those of 2.5*2*2.5m in Xirongxian Hutong.

There are no public facilities in the original sites. The two hutongs are only used as roads, where people can only stand and chat on the sides for a short time. The parts of the 8-meter road for driving, parking and walking will be replanned properly, and 2*1*2m facilities will be placed along the external walls of residential buildings for people to rest, chat, read, and shelter from rain and sunlight, etc. The planting beds will be randomly combined with the facilities to add greenery, and vines can be planted on the roofs of the facilities to beautify the hutongs’ environment.
