Resume of Conservation Projects Re Ordering St Theodore’s Church, Kenfig Hill Client: St Theodore’s Church Contract value: £350,000 Status: In progress Appointed Quinquennial architect and to reorder St Theodore’s Church as a community building and place of worship. The Victorian Church is a prominent local landmark and community focus in need of re organization following closures of nearby parish churches. Community consultation has commenced and presentation of outline proposals for extending and altering the existing church building to facilitate and encourage use as a multi purpose community building and place of worship. Restoration of War Memorials in Neath Port Talbot Client: Neath Port Talbot CBC Contract value: £250,000 Status: In progress Appointed in 2015 to act as architect in charge of restoring three war memorials for Briton Ferry, Port Talbot, and Neath. This involved the compiling of a conservation and management plan used for the purpose of obtaining funding from CADW, War Memorials Trust and Heritage Lottery. Liaised with community, conservation officer, and restoration specialists to ascertain the least invasive methods of cleaning stone and bronzework. Conservation of Brewery Complex, Stackpole Revisited Project Client: National Trust Contract Value: £200,000 Status: Complete GAL appointed October 2011 to consolidate and conserve a group of Grade II listed buildings Brewery, Game Larder, Dairy, Gamekeeper’s Cottage - which were ancillary to the original Georgian stately home, demolished in 1960. This contract is part of a wider conservation programme to conserve and interpret the Stackpole Court site which is of national importance due to its listed designed landscape and nature reserve . Difficult decisions included what C20th ‘improvements’ were to be removed, and how best to consolidate buildings and at the same time preserve the unique ‘as found’ atmosphere. Great House Farm Sustainable Housing Development Client: LivEco Contract Value: £1.2M Status: Complete Sustainable community housing project on site of Grade II listed farmhouse. Problems solved included convincing planning authorities that new work would be sensitive to the historic context of the existing buildings and the adjacent conservation area; management of archaeological remains and evidence of mediaeval settlements; and conservation, repair and refurbishment of a listed barn which is being converted to residential use.

Restoration of Penycarreg Bungalow, Elan Valley Client: Arts Council of Wales / Welsh Water Contract Value: £150,000 Status: Stage 3 Restoration of isolated Edwardian timber framed bungalow notable as the site residence of the resident engineer for the Elan Valley dam construction which took place from 1900-10. Remodelling Grade II Buildings for Chapel Barns Business Park Merthyr Mawr Estate and enhancement of Listed Parkland landscape Client: Merthyr Mawr Estates Contract Value: £1.2M Status: Stage D The owner of the Grade 1 listed Georgian mansion and adjacent home farm appointed GA to investigate uses for redundant farm buildings including a grade II* dovecote. A complex negotiation with conservation officers resulted in the design of modern office buildings inserted between and linked with the existing buildings. Sensitive use of materials and the ‘lightweight’ response was successful at planning but the works have stalled pending the upturn in the economy.

As the only listed farmhouse with mediaeval features remaining within the county of Cardiff the negotiations with conservation officers was protracted, not least because of the poor quality of the previous ‘renovations’. The presence of bat roosts was also a factor in the programme. Work is at present restricted to consolidation works whilst the development of the other farm buildings (see above) is ongoing. Refurbishment of Grade I St Donat’s Castle Client: Atlantic College Contract Value: £250,000 Status: complete Conservation of ‘mock mediaeval’ Victorian timber framed banqueting hall inserted into original mediaeval castle by one time owner William Randolf Hurst. Poor detailing and inadequate maintenance had led to progressive structural movement and degradation of fabric. We identified , documented and managed a programme of works including partial demolition and rebuilding, repairs to stonework, replacement of key structural timber members, and structural roofing repairs, in a highly sensitive and well used landmark building. Conversion of Grade II Telephone Exchange to Wales National Tai Chi Centre Client: Taoist Tai Chi Society of Great Britain Contract value: £650,000 Status: Complete Adaption of redundant but iconic industrial building on prominent position in Newport. Challenges involved how to modify the Edwardian fabric for energy efficiency without compromising the distinctive red brick façade, and making the building safe to use by large numbers of people without destroying the integrity of the large internal machine halls. Conversion of Grade II redundant textile mill to a visitor and community centre in Sedbergh, Yorkshire Client: Sedbergh and District building Preservation Trust Contract Vale: £500,000 Status: Complete This listed textile mill was of great significance to the local village, as it houses the last surviving spinning and weaving machine in the area once famous for wool production. The search for funding also resulted in the building’s adaption for different commercial uses possible within the large open plan floorplates on four stories. Farfield Mill is now a well established centre for arts and crafts, and is becoming a visitor destination in its own right. Other Gillard Associates Conservation Projects ∑ Darkley House, Herefordshire (2005).: Remodelling and Alterations to historic farmhouse for private client Insertion of modern engineered timber barn into timber framed farmhouse site and marrying the two with lightweight glass architecture. ∑ Green Isaf’ Wick, Vale of Glamorgan (2008): Restoration of Grade II* Manse for private client. Detailed surveying and recording of the abandoned building revealed its previous use as a place of worship. Extensive negotiation with CADW and conservation officer resulted in use of dovecote as stairwell and the addition of modern timber glass conservatory. ∑ Ty Mawr Farm, Llangan (2003): Restoration and Remodelling of Grade II Listed farmhouse for private client. Scheme notable for the measurement and recording of a historic Vale farmhouse featured in Houses of the Welsh Countryside (Smith 1988). ∑ Conversion of Grade II Barn to Training Centre for Ty Mawr Lime (2002): simple conversion using existing materials for this well known supplier of sustainable building materials. ∑ Hartbarrow Farm, Cumbria: Conversion of Grade II Listed barn to 4 dwellings (2000): innovative design making use of huge stone built grain store on grade II listed farmstead in the Lake District National Park.
