So what is Livability’s role in supporting disabled people in the 21st century?
Livability - a reputation for innovation Livability has led by example since John Grooms and the Shaftesbury Society, our founding charities, were launched over 160 years ago. As pioneers in the care and support of disabled and disadvantaged people, these organisations led the way in providing free school education and sheltered workshops. We broke new ground by taking disabled young people out of hospital wards and into schools. Over the years, Livability has seen its methods and practices become accepted policies, shaping the way the sector has developed. Today, Livability is still at the forefront of supporting disabled people throughout their lives, with our three education centres, care homes and supported living services. We work with individual service funds (ISF) management, and provide community-based support and employment opportunities through services including Lifestyle Choices. We also offer accessible holidays, respite care, and specialist acquired brain injury rehabilitation. Our work with disabled and disadvantaged people is built upon our core belief in the value of every individual and their potential to contribute to their community.
Helping you meet your challenges Personalisation is the biggest recent development in our sector – and Livability is successfully meeting the challenges involved. Our staff are trained to assist service users to engage in self-directed support, and person-centred planning remains one of our most important tools. As personal budgets and personal health budgets are rolled out nationally, Livability is working with leading councils, health authorities and service users who already hold their own budgets. We are also developing work with Independent Service Funds (ISF) and management. With three education centres, access to education and employment is one of our areas of expertise. Our flexible packages range from day students to 52-week residential options. We work hard to remove barriers to achievement so our students are enabled to live the life they choose. Transition is another of our specialisms. Every year, our education centres support young people as they explore their options, make decisions and take their first steps into adulthood. As well as our hands-on experience, we are at the forefront of campaigning on transitions issues. Livability’s Enterprise Agency opens up previously limited opportunities to disabled and disadvantaged people. This specialist service can provide education, tools and expertise for people who have real business ideas, supporting them from conception to launch. Our well-trained staff offer flexible support to help disabled people live the lives they choose. Support can range from a few hours a week to 24-hour nursing care. Staff respond to service users’ individual needs, and are guided by their personal support plans which set out an individual’s wishes, plans and aspirations.

Livability operates 22 care homes, supporting around 260 adults with physical disabilities, learning difficulties and complex needs. Each person is treated as an individual, and personcentred planning enables them to maximise their independence, make their own choices and identify goals for their own lives.

Isolation is a major issue for disabled people. Livability’s Lifestyle Choices service enables people to live a fuller life outside their home. We provide individually tailored support to help people access employment, leisure or educational services in their local area.
Holidays Our accessible hotels and self-catering holiday homes offer affordable breaks for disabled people. We provide holidays for around 4,000 people a year.
Brain injury rehabilitation Livability’s highly acclaimed Icanho centre in Suffolk offers rehabilitation for those with acquired brain injury. Specialist staff work with individuals to help them adapt to new disabilities, relearn lost skills and work towards independence.
Education Livability runs three education centres which offer education, care and therapy to children and young people with complex learning and care needs. All our centres focus on preparing students for independent adult life. Each has a multi-disciplinary staff team, giving young people access to physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, nursing care and even wheelchair mechanics without having to leave the campus.
Enterprise Our Enterprise Agency works with disabled and disadvantaged people to assist them back into work, and to develop the entrepreneurs of tomorrow. At Livability, we have a wealth of experience in working with overlooked and often vulnerable groups. Our sensitive approach builds clients’ confidence whilst giving them the skills they need to consider self-employment. For our clients, self-employment can be much more than a job – it can be a real route out of isolation and poverty.

• L ivability is working with two partners in Bedfordshire to help individuals work towards volunteering, employment or both. We offer a wide variety of services to three organisations, supporting individuals to achieve their goals. Our one-to-one support is a key part of preparing individuals for work, covering life skills, everyday tasks and routines, and pre-employment skills.
• O ur brain injury rehabilitation centre has designed and delivered a cognitive therapy course to the East of England region. This course includes a theoretical understanding of attention, memory and executive functions, and explores assessment options and formulate cognitive diagnoses. This training, which has received consistently excellent evaluation from health professionals, is held both in-house and externally and further Treatment at sector-leading centre training topics are planned.
