Foundedin1951,TheAbbeyoftheGeneseehousesabouttwo dozenmonks,whosesimple,contemplativelivesrevolve aroundprayerandlectiodivina.
Whilethemonastery’sprimarymissionis toprayfortheworld,notlongafterthe Abbey’sfounding,themonkshappened uponanotherwaytoservethelocal communityandtravelersluckyenoughto discovertheirwork:Monks’Bread.
In1953,oneoftheAbbey’sfirstmonks beganbakingbreadfortheAbbey’sown consumption,relyingonbakingskillshe hadhonedwhileintheNavy Wordabout thedeliciousbread sogoodthatitdidn’t evenneedbutter,aluxurythefirstmonks eschewed spreadviavisitingguestsand tradespeopleand,eventually,ademand forwhatbecameknownasMonks’Bread arose

TRAIL 16 Bear Hollow (4 mi/6.4 km roundtrip)
Lots of twists and turns to be had on this two-mile trail. Parking is .5 mile south of the intersection of River Rd and Ridge Road E.
Fun Fact: LivCo has the most hiking trails in Letchworth State Park, stretching over 56 miles!
TRAIL 22 Sycamore (1.5 mi/2.4 km roundtrip)
This trailhead is a bit tricky to find. Park on the road and look for the trailhead on the north side of the barn near Picket Line Road. This short trail ends at a large sycamore tree.
TRAIL 12 Seneca (1.5 mi/2.4 km roundtrip)
This is a picturesque hike, that ends at the site of a former old bridge across the gorge. Rather than parking at the trailhead, we suggest parking at the corner of Oakland & River Road and walking down the dirt road to the trailhead.
