We’re here to help you turn back the years T hey say that age is all about mind over matter - if you don’t mind then it doesn’t matter. But in our increasingly image conscious society the way we look is crucial. We’re judged on our clothes, our make up, our hair and, more than ever, on our age. More than that, those tell tale signs of getting older affect how we think of ourselves. The odd grey hair or fine line can impact on our confidence and self-esteem as surely as a harsh word from the boss or thoughtless comment from a partner. But age is about much more than the year in which we were born. It’s about how we feel about ourselves and others; our
outlook and the enjoyment we get from life. Afterall, we all know twenty-somethings who are old before their time or pensioners capable of giving people half their life span a run for their money. Age is being comfortable in your own skin, knowing what suits you and what doesn’t when it comes to make-up and clothes. It’s as much about a state of mind as it is about what you see in the mirror. That’s why we’ve put this supplement together. It’s choc-full of the best ideas, advice and information from local experts about how to halt the march of time. There are tips about beauty

Trim off the years
C
an something as simple as a haircut really take years off your appearance? Yes, according to hair and beauty expert Barbara Daley – as long as you follow some simple rules. “January always seems to be the month when people look to reinvent themselves,” says Barbara, who runs the Barbara Daley Hair and Beauty salon in Lime Street. “It’s important to remember that as we get older our hair naturally gets finer, loses body and changes colour. It’s inevitable. “What’s not inevitable is that we have to live with that. There are lots of things we can do to cheat the ageing process and make our hair feel and look thicker and more full of life.” Here are Barbara’s rules for rolling back the years:
Go shorter.
That doesn't mean go short as short hair isn't for everyone although most women over 40 don't suit hair past shoulder length. But long or short your hair needs to have shape to it. Let your stylist help you choose a style which suits your face shape and lifestyle.
Go lighter.
In most cases, as the hair goes white the skin tone goes paler
by SUSAN LEE
so the colour you've always had may no longer suit. Another reason to go lighter is it means the upkeep of your colour is less, as the regrowth isn't as noticeable. After all, there have to be some bonuses to getting older!
Have highlights.
Nothing is more ageing than dense or lifeless hair so highlights give movement and interest. Again this doesn't mean going blonde, secret tones are the best way of achieving a more youthful look. That means having natural tones that work with your colour but aren't obvious.
Keep your hair in good condition.
By having a regular trim and using the right hair care prescribed for your needs you can have better hair than some 20 year olds. Nothing is more youthful than glossy healthy hair.
Update your style
This may just mean a slight change of part but every so often a change of style is as good as a rest in refreshing your look.
Find the right fringe
Fringes add softness to the face and can cover any forehead lines that may be creeping in. I think there is a fringe to suit every face but it's finding the right one for you and again updating it as your hair type changes. Whether it's long or short, heavy or fine, textured or blunt, parted or full, fringes make most people look younger.
Change your products.
You wouldn't dream of wearing the same clothes as you did 10 years ago so why stick to the same hair and skincare products? As we all get older our hair and skin loses its plumpness and vitality so it’s important to replenish these with the products you are using. Trust the advice of your stylist/beautician and get products personalised for you.
Lashes and brows.
As we get older our eyebrows become finer and lighter or even grey; indeed some women of a certain age have eyebrows so fine they look like they no longer have any at all. Our suggestion? Cheat the ageing process by having your brows shaped and tinted every 4-6 weeks. Having your eyelashes tinted also gives a more awake look to the eyes.
Don't forget hands and feet.
Dry and cracked heels and hands are always a give away to a woman's age. To truly look 10 years younger you have to take care of your body from head to toe.
Hydration.
Drink plenty of water and restore the youthful plumpness your skin once had with a hydrating facial. Glowing skin makes you look healthy and fresh faced.
Make over your make up.
Make up like clothes and hair updates itself all the time so it’s easy to go off trend. Also as we get older our skin tone changes, more often than not we go paler, so it is important to recognise that and change our make up to suit.
EXPERT TIPS: Barbara Daley
CAN A NEW HAIRCUT MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE?
BEFORE: Anne arrives at the Barbara Daley Salon
LIKE many busy women Anne McGing admits she had got into a rut with her hair style. “I suppose I’d just become a bit lazy. My hair was long, straight and streaked to death. To be fair, it was versatile - I could curl it and put rollers in it for lift - but a lot of the time I just kept it clipped back for ease.” The 46-year-old mum of two from Bootle also had a number of priorities to juggle - and her hair was frequently the last thing on her mind. As a learning mentor in a senior school her day was always full but she also spent a large portion of her time caring for her own mum as well as being a parent to her two daughters aged 20 and 21 and running a home. “I just didnt have the time to think about my hair and it wasn’t easy fitting a salon appointment
into my lifestyle anyway,” she says. “I think its the same for lots of women. There is always something else to do, somewhere else to go and a trip to the hairdresser’s sometimes just doesn’t register on the to do list.” But with the sad loss of her mum late last year and the dawning of 2011 Anne realised the moment had come to take a little time for herself - and that meant a new hairdo to give her a new look and a confidence boost. “I knew I had to get my act together and get on with life. I wanted to feel and look fresher. It was a new year and a new start.” She admits she had preconceptions about what she wanted done to her locks but, in the hands of Barbara, she forgot them. “I just let her advise me and then get on with it.”
Anne’s longer hair was cut into a shorter, choppier style and a fringe put in. The tones of rich copper and gold were applied to bring life and movement to the cut. “I looked in the mirror and was amazed and thrilled. “Before I thought I appeared drawn and pale. The new colour has lifted my complexion and warmed me up somehow. “I’d also forgotten what a lovely experience being pampered at the hairdresser’s can be. “Do I look younger? I don’t know about that. “But I certainly feel fresher and more than that I feel good about myself. “I was worried I wouldn’t see me in the mirror but I do, only a me that looks brighter. “It’s only a new hair do but yes, AFTER: Anne McGing with her it’s made a difference.” new look

Best foods to defy age You are what you eat, or so they say. But what foods should we be popping into our supermarket trollies to ensure we’re maximising our potential to stay young and healthy?
Blueberries:
The dark blue-skinned fruit is chock-a-block with cancer-preventing antioxidants called anthocyanins. A one-cup serving also contains nearly 25 percent of your vitamin C requirements, along with dietary fibre and even manganese, which plays a vital role in bone health and metabolism. They also taste gorgeous!
Dark green vegetables:
Think spinach, kale and broccoli. When it comes to veggies, the darker in colour, the better as they are filled with a plethora of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help build and repair our cells. Try mixing them into foods you already love: put finely chopped cooked or raw broccoli florets in your favourite cold pasta salad, or add cooked, cooled, drained spinach to the ingredients in your next batch of homemade burgers.
Water:
Looking for the real fountain of youth? Search no further than plain water. Our bodies are made up of over 70
percent water and it keeps us fresh and hydrated. Dehydrated bodies feel tired and dehydrated skin looks dry and lacklustre.
Prunes:
Dark purple and best known for their laxative qualities, prunes have earned a reputation as a digestive aid but they're a formidable anti-aging food. Filled with potassium, fibre and antioxidant phytochemicals, plus iron and vitamin A if they don’t float your boat just think of them as dried plums.
Yoghurt;
Yogurt is high in bone-building calcium and protein, two crucial dietary elements many women don't get enough of. It's also low in carbs. Opt for the plain unsweetened kind, which will allow you to add fresh or frozen fruits.
Whole grains:
Packed full of anti-aging elements from fibre to protein to iron. They are also the best appetite-satisfying alternative to white carbs
Frozen fruit and vegetables:
Just because it’s winter we shouldn’t reach for the comfort food. Canned and frozen fruit and veg can be packed with more nutrients than their fresh counterparts as they may have travelled less distance.

Super slimmer Jean reveals how losing weight has helped her regain her health and her youth, Susan Lee reports
W
ITH a big birthday coming up mum of one Jean Christopher knew she had to take action about her weight. “I was fat at 30 and fat at 40. I couldn’t be fat at 50,” explains the library manager from Allerton. Now, five stones lighter, the 49-year-old reckons she’s not only shed pounds but years as well. “I don’t feel ten years younger – I feel fifteen or twenty!” she laughs. “I have no aches or pains and my health has improved so much. I am healthy and I’m happy. “In the end I had to take charge of me and I did. That’s a wonderful feeling.” Jean, who has an 18-year-old son, says she has always struggled with her weight. “I was a fat baby and a fat child. I was told it was ‘puppy fat’ but by the time I was a teenager I realised I wasn’t the same as everyone else. I was overweight.” She says she never let it stop her from enjoying life. “You can go one of two ways when you’re overweight, either be introverted or get on with it. I got on with it but I wasn’t as happy as I liked to portray I was. “I’m quite out-going but I’d make excuses about not going out with friends or for a meal. I felt like I’d have to hide in a corner.” Jean says there are few pictures of her when she was overweight. “I had no scales in the house and no full length mirror. I didn’t want a visual image of what I looked like.” Her health suffered too with her joints and in particular her knees becoming painful. She lost some weight to marry and admits she became a ‘serial dieter’. “I’ve tried everything from cabbage soup and eggs to hypnosis, tablets and acupuncture. I’d lose a bit but the weight would always creep back on.” Looking back she says she was a
comfort eater, reaching for food when stressed or bored. “I built my day around mealtimes. I had no portion control. I’d have to go to bed to stop eating!” But, with a landmark birthday on her mind, she says she literally woke up one day and decided to change. “I thought, ‘right, today’s the day’. I’d decided I was worth the effort and the time. I wanted to feel better than I felt that morning when I’d opened my eyes.” Logging on to the WeightWatchers website she discovered a class near her home that night. She admits she was ‘devastated’ when she was told her weight – 18st 11lbs. “But the class leader, Bernie, said ‘that’s the last time you’ll ever hear that weight’ and that was a huge comfort.” Now, almost two years after that fateful morning when she decided to act, she is five stones lighter and says she feels as if she has been given ler life back. And although still working towards
her goal – her big birthday is still some months away – she has dropped from a dress size 24 to a 14. “I was going out somewhere and realised the people I would meet hadn’t seen me in 12 months. “I got there and someone told me how fabulous I looked and that was just wonderful. “Do I feel ten years younger? No, I feel more! Feeling this well and this happy is addictive. It’s not a feeling I’m going to give up anytime soon!” Jean’s Weight Watcher’s leader, Bernie Dobson, says she is ‘so proud’ of Jean “and the new woman I now know! “She has done so well and has seen great success on the new Weight Watchers ProPoints plan. “I am positive that Jean will reach her goal this year as she has remained positive and dedicated throughout. It’s great to see the new-found confidence she has gained with her weight loss – she is an inspiration to us all!” A spokesman for Weight Watchers
How to get through the weekend THERE’S no doubt about it, losing weight can help us feel - and look - younger. But for many of us watching our weight, weight loss is for weekdays. We meticulously watch what we put into our mouths from Monday to Friday but come the weekend, dinners, drinks and Sunday morning fry ups cause chaos. But there’s no need to write off the weekend after a Friday night treat or tipple - or alternatively, to go without - as with a little
planning and the right knowledge you can accommodate guilty pleasures without widening the waistline. “Weekends should be a time to enjoy yourself,” says Bernie Dobson, a Weight Watchers Leader from Liverpool, “and with the right tools, there’s no reason why you can’t have fun and still see weight loss success. “The new Weight Watchers ProPoints plan is our most liveable yet and
makes it even easier to stay on track during those tempting times,” says Bernie. “It has taken all the best nutritional science from around the globe and distilled it down to give us a simple, effective weight loss programme.” With the new plan at the ready, Bernie explains how a few small swaps and the right food choices can leave you feeling fit, healthy and happy this year – even on the weekends!
Dinners Out
You don’t have to put life on hold when losing weight. Here are a few ways to help make good choices when out for a meal. Take the edge off your appetite with fruit or soup before you go out; that way you avoid overeating. Look at the menu and choose in advance so there’s no snap decisions! Ask for sauce or dressings on the side so you choose how much you put
onto your meal. Remove food triggers – if there are breads and olives on the table and you don’t want them, move them out of arms reach.
A drink with friends
Alcohol can hinder weight loss by lowering your resolve and providing extra calories. But by making smarter choices, you can enjoy a tipple without tipping the scales.

An insider’s guide to the rules of style R
ules govern every aspect of our lives. Rules in school and in work, legal rules, the rules of the road. But there are some rules which, far from being restrictive, can actually free you. The rules of shopping. “I would say between ninety and ninety five percent of my customers are women who have lost their way a bit when it comes to fashion,” says personal shopper at Debenhams, Rosie Knightly. “They may have been out of the workplace for a while, perhaps had kids, have moved into their forties and suddenly they don’t know what suits them anymore. “There’s so much to choose from on the high street it can be hard at the best of time but when you’ve lost your style or are terrified of looking like mutton dressed as lamb it’s twice as hard. “But there are basic do’s and don’ts you can follow. They’re a good safety net and will get you results.” Rosie has been a personal shopper for the past three years and admit she ‘adores’ what she does.
“I love making a difference to people. I have regular clients but I also have people coming in for a special occasion. I can be with customers for a short while or hours but it doesn’t matter because you have to get it right. “I had one lady recently in her mid forties who had lost weight but was still constantly in baggy black clothes. We rebuilt her wardrobe from scratch and she left wearing some of the things we’d chosen. “That was fantastic.” So where to start? “Simple, maximise your best bits. “If you are a curvier shape and, for instance, you’re looking for a party dress go
TIPS FOR FULLER FIGURE
● Avoid stiff fabrics and go for soft, drapey materials like linens or wool crepes. ● Avoid volume. It will simply accentuate size. ● Keep any detail above the bust line or below the hip line. ● A tailored coat left undone looks sexy but avoid A-line cuts. ● With jacket length never finish at the widest part of your body – it will only make you look bigger. Go for a length which finishes below or above. ● Go for the longest option in trousers so they just skim the floor so elongating the leg.
for a deep V neckline. It’s a great way to show off your decolletage.” But she insists we shouldn’t be frightened of showing off our curves. “Cinched waists nipped in under the bust will give you a great figure and draw

attention to your voluptuousness. Women shouldn’t be scared off showing their shape.” Rose also advises you throw out all that black. “It’s seen as safe but in fact black just shadows your skin and shows up any fine lines. It’s more fun to wear colour and means you’ll wear less makeup. “If you don’t want to go head to toe in colour accessorise with it using a scarf or a great bag.” For those of us who don’t want to show off upper arms she advises capped sleeves or a one button fitted jacket. And don’t assume that leggings, those great fashion staples, are the preserve of skinny teenagers. “Wear them with a tunc top or a wrap around dress. They are so easy, versatile and super comfortable.” With animal print a statement trend Rosie’s tip is to work it with accessories like bags or bangles. “Don’t assume that this or that label is the only one for you. There are pieces in every range that will work for everybody - it’s just finding them and knowing how to put them together.” Susan Lee
TIPS FOR EVERYONE ● Do the research. There’s nothing more dispiriting than drifting from shop to shop with nothng to show for it at the end of the day. ● Search the web and check out magazines for inspiration. ● Keep a list: Make a note of any key pieces missing from your wardrobe and keep it with you when you shop. ● Leave your comfort zone behind: Try new cuts, colours, shades. Maximise your best bits. Don’t be afraid to change.

HEY say that age is a state of mind, that the perkiest of pensioners can outperform the gloomiest of teens in the youth stakes simply thanks to their outlook. But if that’s true – and we’ve all seen examples of it – can we really think ourselves younger? Life coach Zita Richardson believes we can. All it takes is a shift in attitude. “I’m a firm believer in mind over matter and youth is simply a mind set based on behaviour and emotion. “Change that behaviour and you can change that mind set.” Based in Hightown Zita travels the world with her
Age is all in the mind
Life coach reveals how you can think yourself young company Motivate Me delivering motivational training courses mainly to corporate clients. One of 10 children the working mum, together with business partner Helga Moran, has advised companies as diverse as LFC, Asda and United Utilities and has recently returned from a conference in Malta helping the Hilton Hotel group. But whether an international firm or an individual the message is the same: it all comes down to personal philosophy. “If you don’t take care of yourself mentally then it shows. Stress, anxiety and worry age us but it’s how you deal with them that matters; that’s what will affect your philosophy. “So you can have a very serious young person and someone in their 50s who is a bundle of joy.” She says those who allow themmselves to age quickly are often those who hold onto negative emotions. “We all have bad things happen to us, we all get angry or resentful, we all have baggage we have

to deal with. “But you have to let that negativity go otherwise it eats away at the goodness inside us and sucks out all the nourishment.” She believes that sometimes too we are our own worst enemies. “People focus on their imperfections rather than their positives but it’s sad if we believe we can’t enjoy life because of the way we look.” So how should we go about thinking ourselves younger? “Look at how often you laugh every day. Laughter is a great weapon against negativity. Look at the company you are keeping. “If you surround yourself with negative people that will have a knock on effect on you. “Cherish your friends and family. They are crucial to our well being. “I visited to Hawaii which is an ageing society where people often live to an old age. They atribute it to having family and friends close by and a purpose in life.” Does she advocate keeping a diary? “Some poeple enjoy writing down their feelings and thoughts. I’d simply say write down the positive or happy things that have happened to you that day. “In bed at night I tend to take stock and look back at what I have had to be grateful for.” As for moaning? That’s off the list. “We all enjoy a good moan – about work or about the kids. But then those kids grow up and they’re gone or you retire from that job and miss it. “I’d like people to say ‘I get to go to work’ rather than ‘I’ve got to go to work.’ “The fact is if you look for fault then you’ll find it an inevitably focuss on it But even if we are all getting older Zita reckons that far from being a cause for misery. “What’s wrong with getting older? I don’t think we should see it as a miserable negative thing. “Think of what age brings with it - it confidence, experience, insight, greater intelligence. You can reflect on what you have accomplished and what you have yet still to do.” Does she have a final tip to stave off those wrinkles and worry lines? “Yes, always try to take some ‘me time’. You can call it meditation, quiet time or whatever. Just make sure that it’s time for you.” ● www.motivateme.net. Tel 0151 222 5469

OR personal fitness expert Matt Ibbs exercise isn’t just about losing weight or getting fit - it’s about getting the ‘feel good’ factor back into life. “Everyone knows the health benefits of exercise whether it is through a gym, boot camp, walking, swimming - any activity that raises the heart rate and takes you through a full range of motion working and mobilising all muscle groups,” he explains. “But you can’t ignore the benefits of the feel ngood factor. “People talk about endorphin release – the chemical that will give you that natural ‘high’ after exercise but it’s not just endorphins, there’s epinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. “There is a psychological reaction to exercise too. While the physiological reaction may not always occur when exercising knowing that you have been to the gym or exercised will give you psychological buzz in knowing you are looking after your health. “That’s what health and exercise is all about: feeling good about
by SUSAN LEE yourself, having more confidence, more energy, less stress, and more importantly, benefiting your health, whether that’s reducing the risk of asthma or depression, cancer, coronary heart disease or osteoarthritis.” Matt, who runs boot camps in Sefton Park and personal training services from his studio in Old Swan, knows his stuff. He was IFS UK Personal Trainer of the Year 2008, and there’s not much he doesn’t know about how to get in shape And that applies to whether you’re a confirmed gym bunny or just starting out on the fitness trail. “If you are looking at exercise and food as a means to drop a few pounds then long term the chances are you will fail. However, if you are looking at it to improve your lifestyle, well-being and health then you are making changes for the right reason and are more likely to achieve your goal. “The key to fat loss is to regain or retain your health.”
That’s all very well but what if there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to excercise? He reckons that those following personalised programs lasting between 15-45 minutes 3 times per week should see results. “But if you’re not a fan of the gym please remember jogging, swimming and hill walking are all ways to increase your heart rate and get fit and healthy.” And rather than swim 30-40 lengths set yourself a time of say 20 or 30 minutes and see how many lengths you can do in that time. Then next time you go, beat it. That way you can see your fitness levels increasing. “Just make sure you add a resistance workout such as the body weight program (see right) or a weight based program. By increasing your muscle mass your body requires more energy to feed your muscles meaning that you burn more calories throughout the day.” For more information go to www.mattibbs.com or call 0800 612 8955.

10 YEARS YOUNGER
Give them a hand to look years younger N
othing gives away a woman’s age as much as her hands. Take a look at Madonna. The body of a 20-year-old everywhere else thanks to that punishing gym regime but check out those hands – the crinkly skin and sticky-out veins tell their own story. And it’s not just A listers who suffer. Rough skin, age spots, loss of collagen - not to mention unloved nails or cracked polish - all combine to add years to the part of our body that’s most often on show. It doesn’t help that we’ve all just endured the harshest winter weather for many a long year. Add to that the effects of sun damage, pollution and day to day wear and tear and it’s little wonder we can end up with hands that look significantly older than the rest of us. The good news is that a great deal of the damage is reversible - if we take action now and stick to a regime. “It’s hugely important to keep hands looking good. They are the first thing that people notice about us and first impressions count,” says beauty therapist Honey Lester who is based at the Andrew Collinge salon in Liverpool’s Castle Street. “A little bit of attention to our hands goes a long way. And great nails and hands make us feel

confident and good about ourselves.” Her first piece of advice is simple – moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. “You have to use hand cream religiously. I’d keep a tube in my handbag, one by the sink at home, in the bathroom, on your desk. Anywhere where it will catch your eye and remind you to put on. “It keeps hand moisturised and hydrated and that is enormously important. Dry skin can wreak serious damage.” Look for creams which include
SIX OF THE BEST – TIPS FOR GREAT NAILS ● Use a base coat. It protects the nail from discolouration over time. ● Don’t shake your bottle of varnish it promotes air bubbles in the lacquer. Instead, warm it between your hands, rolling the bottle back and forth. ● If you don’t want colour, us e buffing block to buff and add shine to your nails. ● Olive oil and raw sugar makes an effective and inexpensive exfoliator. ● Soak hands in warm water before pushing back the cuticle. ● A top coat over the varnish reapplied every other day - will make your colour last longer.
vitamin E and shea butter – two key ingredients when it comes to nourishing skin. She’s also a big fan of exfoliation. “We exfoliate other parts of us, why not our hands? It can help combat liver spots and pigmentation – most women will have these because our hands are so exposed all the time to the sun.” Hayley’s a firm believer in nail oil, too, as it promotes nail growth and strength. And when it comes to filing nails she advises us to look upon it as you would a hair cut. “Your hair always needs trimming and it’s the same with nails. They really should be filed once a week to keep them in good condition. Go for a fine grain file, nothing too harsh, so you don’t damage the nail.” Her top tips for the colours to watch out for this spring? “There are some lovely pastel shades out there – I really like a subtle pastel blue – but you might want to go for a bold statement and opt for a neon shade.” The salon also specialises in using Swarovski gems on manicured nails. “You can have just one on a couple of nails to add something a bit different or have a whole nail full for a more full on effect.” ● A file and polish at the Andrew Collinge salon, Castle Street costs £12.50. Swarovski gems, 20p each.

TOP TIPS
As a model Anita always has to make sure she looks good. So what are her tips for keeping the signs of ageing at bay?
●
Confidence. If you feel good in yourself then you look good and vice versa. I try to adopt anything that makes me feel good and better in myself. Eat healthily, but never deprive ● yourself of a favourite treat. Try to keep fit by doing ● some form of exercise at least three times a week. Even a brisk walk in the fresh air. Exercise can increase your circulation and blood flow leading to smoother skin, less cellulite and a toned body.
Use an exfoliatior on the face ● and body, so that you get rid of any dead skin cells and leave a younger, fresher layer of skin behind. A face mask is good for a deep cleanse and keeps your skin hydrated and young. It will also help flush out toxins and leave you less prone to spots.
●
A hair mask, used once a week, will help keep your hair glossy and moisturised. This is especially good and beneficial for coloured hair. I always use a heat protector product before styling, too. It helps prevent hair from being damaged and drying out. Again it helps to retain moisture and gloss. Use a lip balm. “I recommend ● putting a little on your lips just before applying your lipstick.
“If you don't want lips that are too shiny get some loose powder and put on top of a very thin piece of tissue. Put that tissue on your lips and press the powder through the tissue gently. This will put a thin layer of powder on top of the lipstick stopping any shine.” To make teeth look whiter use a warm shade of lipstick. Those that work great are colours such as copper for greyish teeth while for yellow teeth you are best going for a cooler shade. For the pout effect use a liberal amount of lip gloss in the centre of the lips.
●
Good posture is a must. It makes you look better and makes you look slimmer. Buy clothes that fit you ● properly, no matter what size you are. Items that are too tight will
just put emphasis on any bumps and baggy clothes make you look bigger.
●
Treat yourself once in a while to a new necklace or bangles or new scarf. It can give you a new look for a fraction of the price of a new outfit.

Banish old habits with a model makeover A by SUSAN LEE
S a model and former beauty queen you might think there was very little Anita White could learn about make-up but you’d be wrong. “I was taught how to wear and apply make-up when I was with a model agency but in many instances I’m still wearing what I wore 20 years ago,” says Anita, who is in her late 40s and lives in Heswall. “I’m sentimental too. My mum wore the same lipstick for years Rimmel’s no 91 – and I wear one similar to that now. It reminds me of her.” Anita, a former Miss Liverpool who worked consistently through the late 1970s and 80s, admits she’s loyal to brands. “I’ve always used Clinique on my skin, Dior for under the eyes and I Iove The Body Shop’s mascara.” And when her daughter Jess, now 20, came along she was happy to pass on hints and tips. “Now we share make-up too, which is great, although she gets cross when I don’t give it back!” We sent Anita and Jess along to the Bobbi Brown counter in Debenhams to see whether the experts there could teach both mum and daughter some new tricks - and prove that one brand really can suit all. Anita admits she had never considered going to Bobbi Brown, a brand which prides itself on not having a ‘core age’ customer but instead adapts its products and looks for every woman. The team there gave Anita a ‘dewy’ complexion rather than her usual matt one. “And that really did give my skin a more youthful appearance. It didn’t feel like I was wearing make-up which was wonderful as I don’t usually wear foundation in the first place. “It was also applied with the fingers which was something I hadn’t thought of doing.” She went for a smokey eye look in shades of blues and greys. “I wouldn’t have chosen them but they made my eyes stand out plus the make-up artist used liner on both my top and bottom lashes which is something I’ll try myself.” She kept her usual lipstick but the Bobbi Brown team used one of their glosses to add interest “I really liked the overall look and picked up a few tricks along the way.” For Jess the team used neutral

EYE UP: Jessica with make up artist Jessica Bell tones to give her a natural, polished look. “The mascara really enhanced my lashes which was great and the eye shadow defined my eyes. “It was a lovely mum and daughter experience to do together.” A spokesman for Bobbi Brown says the team’s philosophy is, rather than zoning in on what's ‘wrong’ and using make-up to cover it up, hone in on what's right and use make-up to enhance it. “Make-up counters can be quite intimidating but no-one should be afraid to approach us. Every woman, no matter what her age, can look and feel great and use our products. “It’s just a matter of learning how.”

Simplify your make-up bag the easy way: ● Organise and de-clutter twice a year. ● Toss out any makeup that's gone bad – if it has changed colour, or has separated, it’s time is up. ● Next, get rid of anything that you haven't used in two years. ● Foundation should disappear into your skin when you swatch it on the side of your face. At most, you need two shades – one that matches your skin now, and one that will work in a different season when you're either lighter or darker. ● Lipstick is where many women overbuy. Be realistic about what you're going to wear. You should have a tried-and-true shade that you

can put on without looking in a mirror – imagine the colour of your lips taken up a notch. ● All you need is three shades of eye shadow to make eyes stand out. A base colour – like white, bone, banana, or toast – that blends into your skintone. A medium-toned lid colour – like taupe, grey, heather – that doesn't require blending. A dark colour – like mahogany, charcoal, or navy – to use as liner. ● Stick to black mascara, or try brown as a softer alternative. ● Your blush should instantly make you look healthy. Own two shades – one that is the colour of your cheeks when they're flushed, and a slightly brighter shade for a pop of colour.

Surgery isn’t only way to look younger T
PICK OF THE BEST There’s a bewildering array of treatments out there to keep us looking young. Here’s our guide to the best
Anti-wrinkle treatments,
● Sometimes referred to generically as ‘Botox’, work on the ‘dynamic wrinkles’ or wrinkles that are caused by facial muscle movement. The most common areas for anti-wrinkle treatments are the forehead wrinkles, eye wrinkles (crow’s feet) and around the mouth area. ● Botox is one of the many trade names for the neurotoxic protein botulinum toxin, poisonous in large doses but used heavily diluted in cosmetic treatments. ● The protein works to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses. The result is that muscles can no longer contract so wrinkles relax and soften. ● Effects tend to last between three and four months. ● The treatment is injected into the muscle using a fine needle. Repeated anti-wrinkle treatments visibly improve the appearance of the skin .
IME was when using cosmetic techniques to look younger meant going under the
Temporary fillers.
● Designed to be used on the face to enhance soft tissue as well as fill in and smooth areas around the nose and mouth. ● They can also be used to augment lips and lipline. ● Treatment takes between 15 minutes to an hour.
Medical microdermabrasion.
● This is the removal of upper skin layers to produce a refreshed appearance. ● It uses a vacuum suction and fine abrasive crystals to produce an accelerated exfoliation. ● It helps promote collagen and speeds up cell production and can be done in a lunchtime.
Thermage:
● A non invasive skin tightening process it involves the delivery of Thermage-radiofrequency providing skin tightening, production of collagen and smoother more youthful skin. ● It’s a single treatment and is completed within two hours with no recovery time. ● Gradual results can be seen within six months. ● Parts of the body targetted can include the neck, upper arms, stomach, legs and around the eyes.
Laser treatment.
● Helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles particularly in sun damaged skin. ● Works by promoting collagen remodelling and repair ● All treatments are available at Tracey Bell

knife. No longer. Around 80% of all cosmetic procedures in the UK are now non surgical, whether that’s anti-wrinkle treatments, lip fillers or having work done on our teeth. It helps too that the prices of treatments have tumbled in recent years and where once they were seen as the preserve of A listers now they are accessible to almost anyone. And nowhere embraces the looking good culture more than the women of Liverpool. “Women in this city know their stuff. They know the products and the procedures. They respect themselves and aren’t shy of spending money on looking good,” says Tracey Bell who specialises in dentistry and non surgical treatments and runs two clinics, one in Liverpool and one in the Isle of Mann. She has seen a growth of 64% in non surgical

procedures between 2009 and 2010 despite the economic downturn. “Women still want to look good, both for themselves and to be able to compete in an increasingly difficult jobs market. “Even three years ago you could not produce the same results with non surgical as you could with surgical. “That’s changed dramatically and the results are now comparable.” And it’s not just older women who are seeking to stop the clock. “Treatments can be preventative to the ageing process. “Whereas once upon a time women would wait until they were 50 and then have everything done they now opt for having treatments earlier. “We work on the basis of giving people a look that’s so natural everybody notices but nobody knows.” So what are the top treatments to go for if you
want to look good for longer? “I’d go for facial rejuvenation - that’s Botox, fillers, facial peels or lazers; I’d also go for work around the eyes, again, fillers or lazer treatment.” She also cites work on the teeth. “They are the first ting people see. Great teeth make an enormous difference to your appearance.” But the big growth area according to Tracey is in non surgical fat loss. “We eat so many carbs and so much processed food weight gain is a real issue. “We’re actually looking to host the first clinical trial outside of London in a new procedure that actually freezes fat and I’d like to hear from anyone who wants to take part in that.” As for her own idea on what keeps people young, they’re simple. “I’d minimise sun exposure, don’t go near a sun bed and have a very good skincare regime. “And do it now. Good habits have to start young.”
My new teeth changed my life
WHEN Roy Dutton first caught a glimpse of his new smile he admits he cried his eyes out. “I had an almost perfect smile for the first time since I was about 12 and it was wonderful,” recalls the 32-year-old dad of two from Wavertree. “It’s made such a huge difference. “I have more confidence, more self belief. It’s even spurred me on to start my own business.” Roy’s new look came courtesy of Tracey Bell - and his partner Lisa. He entered her into a competition on the radio to drop a dress size and she won. But it was when he was accompanying her to Tracey’s clinic
BEFORE: Roy Dutton in Hanover Street for an appointment when ther issue of his teeth came to the fore. “Tracey remarked that I never seemed to smile so I opened my mouth and showed her why. “She said, ‘we can fix them’. It was totally unexpected. I was amazed.” Roy, an IT designer who has
two daughters with Lisa aged four and four weeks, had long been ashamed of his teeth. “I had teeth on top of teeth. They looked like a row of bombed out houses. Some of my teeth even held hands! “I never smiled from the age of about 12 and if I did it looked like I had trapped wind.” He consulted an orthodontist in his late teens to be told he has left it too late for work to be done. “So that was that. I used to often have my hand infront of my mouth if I talked. Not a day went by when I didn’t look in the mirror and thought ‘car crash’.” He says he over-compensated by adopting a larger than life personality.

“It was something to hide behind,” he says. So when Tracey made her offer he jumped at the chance. She filed his teeth down and then fitted Californian veneers and also a ceramic bridge in work that took around two weeks to complete. The results, says Roy, have been dramatic. “My self belief has improved no end to such an extent | decided to launch my own company. “I think my personality has been toned down a little, too. “I always said you don’t get a second chance at a first impression. Now that first impression is a great one and I’m so grateful.”

‘You’re only ever as old as you feel’

CTRESSES are often so fraught with insecurities as they battle to survive in a profession preoccupied with appearance that they’re reluctant to talk
about age. But Tamzin Outhwaite isn’t just refreshingly open and upfront about having turned 40, she’s positively celebrating this stage in her life. “It’s funny, everyone else made such a big deal about that birthday and seemed to regard it as a dreaded life-changing milestone,” she says, recalling the event last November. “People kept telling me it would be tough to come to terms with and that I’d rush off and do something drastic like having a tattoo! “Actually, I didn’t do anything like that and don’t even feel any different. “I’m happy with the way I am now and enjoying life so much, that for me this age seems like a good thing.” Her role last year in West End musical Sweet Charity also had an unexpected bonus in boosting her confidence, not simply because she was widely acclaimed for her performance, but because of the result of the physical demands on her body. “I was performing eight times a week in a show that lasted nearly three hours. I’ve literally never had better legs or a better bum, and could eat what I wanted because the weight just fell off me with all that exercise,” she explains. “So it meant that despite being 40 I could quite safely say that my body was in better shape than it has ever been in my life.” But it’s personal happiness that’s brought fulfilment to this down-to-earth girl. Four years ago she married actor Tom Ellis, who plays Gary in BBC2
103 Eaton Road, West Derby L12 1LU
Tamzin Outhwaite tells Susan Lee why she’s hitting 40 with a spring in her step comedy, Miranda, and they have a two-year-old daughter, Florence. “Things have come together for me in all sorts of ways,” she says. “I never wanted to work and work and leave it too late to have a family, because probably my ultimate goal was to have that. “I would have hated to be gazing in the mirror at 40 if I was still single and wondering where my life was going.” Outhwaite first found fame in 1998 in BBC1’s EastEnders as sexy Walford resident Melanie Healy. She quit in 2002, went to Hollywood to star opposite Wesley Snipes in the film 7 Seconds, and then had lead roles in a variety of dramas including Red Cap, Hustle and Hotel Babylon. Although currently she’s enjoying a break from acting, she says like any working parent she is aware of the importance of maintaining a lifestyle balance. “It’s my ongoing struggle just to find the balance in life that means you can give enough to yourself, your child, your husband, your family and put enough into work,” she says. “Work can be all consuming in our industry, so when you get a job it feels slightly like the rest of your life is neglected for a while. “But I feel very blessed to have such a supportive husband and amazing family and friends

and as there’s no set routine in showbusiness - we get breaks between roles, like I have now - it can be tricky, but it all works out.” She and Ellis, 32, married after a whirlwind one-year romance. They met when she was starring opposite his best friend, James McAvoy, in a play, Breathing Corpses. “It wasn’t love at first sight, but it was pretty near to it - let’s say it was love at second sight,” she says. She glows with maternal pride when she talks about their daughter, Florence who she says is currently going through the ’terrible twos’ stage. “We’re coping with her pushing the boundaries and having a few tantrums and screaming fits when she doesn’t get her own way. “It’s a tricky phase but she’s such a bright, intelligent, gorgeous little thing that I can deal with it because the rest of the time is such fun.” Outhwaite’s relaxed about whether she will have any more children. “I don’t know whether we will. I’m quite happy with my little one and want to enjoy her for a bit and of course, at 40, I’m under no illusions that it’s going to be easy for me to have another.” Being at home is allowing her time to work on her fitness as she says she’s having to watch her weight again after giving up her strenuous West-End role. As the face of a new Boots healthy lifestyle campaign she’s been motivated by its free online health assessment, which identifies lifestyle changes necessary to improve health. “I was always brought up to clear my plate and I don’t think I ever learnt portion control,” she says. “I just love my food but this is helping me retrain my eating habits.” “Also my approach to life’s always been ’it’s all about the journey and not about the destination’. “But really my goal is to live in the moment so you experience and appreciate everything on a day-to-day basis.”

N a busy life it’s what we call crave - a little rest and relaxation. But can building in a portion of ‘me time’ regularly into our schedules really result in looking and feeling better – and younger? Channine Edwards believes it can. As manager of city centre spa Urban Calm based in Liverpool’s Metquarter it’s her job to help the women of the city find some peace in a chaotic world. “We get all sorts of women coming through our doors, from students to businesswomen or those just out in the city with friends and who want to stop off for a treatment. “The one thing they have in common, though, is they lead busy lives. “We also get women who are under a certain level of stress, whether that’s undergoing IVF treatment to facing redundancy. “Stress can affect both your health, how you feel about yourself and how you look. “I think it’s well recognised that taking some me time isn’t selfish or pointless; it’s essential.” What are her tops tips then for treatments which will both relax and replenish? “A facial is a must. It helps stop the ageing process and will boost collagen. “I’d tie into that a wax and tint on the eyebrows and possibly look to boost lashes too. “Eyebrows frame the face and those which are well groomed make a huge difference while boosting lashes will wake up your eyes and, because you don’t need mascara, simply makes life easier.” Her favourite body treatment is a lava shell massage using clam shells from the Philippines. “It totally releases stress and emotion. “And an Indian head massage works really too.” So what does Channine opt for when she wants to chill out? “I’d go for a spa day with a friend, of course!” ● They call it ‘beauty sleep’ for very good reason. While we snooze the body gets to work repairing and replenishing our bodies - and that includes our skin. But just what can you do to

Take time out to chill promote a good night’s sleep? ● Set a regular bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every night. If you need an alarm clock to wake up on time, you may need to set an earlier bedtime. As with your bedtime, try to maintain your regular wake–time even on weekends. ● Nap to make up for lost sleep. If you need to make up for a few lost hours, opt for a daytime nap rather than sleeping late. ● Fight after–dinner drowsiness. If you find yourself getting sleepy way before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. ● Make your bedroom more sleep
friendly. Keep noise to a minimum. If you can’t eliminate it altogether try masking it with a fan or recordings of soothing sounds. Keep your room dark and cool; most people sleep best at around 65° F or 18° C. Make sure your bed and bedding are comfortable. ● Turn off the TV. Television stimulates the mind, rather than relaxing it. Instead, read a book or magazine, take a warm bath or do some easy stretches. ● Eat right and get regular exercise. ● Stay away from late, big meals. Try to make dinnertime earlier in the evening, and avoid heavy, rich foods within two hours of bed. Fatty foods take a lot of work for your
stomach to digest and may keep you up. ● Avoid alcohol before bed. While it may make you fall asleep faster, alcohol reduces your sleep quality, waking you up later in the night. ● Cut down on caffeine. Caffeine can cause sleep problems up to 12 hours after drinking it! ● Eat a light snack before bedtime. It can help promote sleep. Try half a turkey or peanut butter sandwich, a small bowl of wholegrain, low sugar cereal or a banana and a cup of hot chamomile tea ● Relax. Try deep breathing. Close your eyes and try taking deep, slow breaths making each breath even deeper than the last. Starting at your toes, tense all the muscles as
tightly as you can, then completely relax. Work your way up from your feet to the top of your head. Visualise a peaceful, restful place. ● If you do wake up, stay in bed. Try a relaxation technique such as visualisation, deep breathing, or meditation, they’re not a replacement for sleep, but rest and relaxation still help rejuvenate your body. If you’ve been awake for more than 15 minutes, try getting out of bed and doing a quiet, non-stimulating activity, such as reading a book. Keep the lights dim and avoid screens of any kind. ● If you wake during the night feeling anxious about something, make a brief note of it on paper and postpone worrying about it.

ate Donnelly has no doubt that the right make-up tricks can make any woman feel fresher – and look younger. As co-founder of make-over experts Peaches and Cream she deals with hundreds of clients a year of all ages. “People come in and say, ‘I don’t want to look like I’m wearing make-up’ but why not? “Wearing make-up is a positive thing and as much a part of what you’ve got on as your dress for the races, business suit or wedding gown. “It makes you look lady-like, feel polished and more feminine. “Even subtle neutral shades look great when they’re applied correctly.” Based in Dale Street, Peaches and Cream was founded in 2005 when Kate met her business partner Nicola Smith when they were both studying at Hugh Baird College. They now have a busy waiting list for appointments from brides wanting a make-over, those preparing for a night and office workers seeking some ‘me’ time. Peaches and Cream are even opening a University of Peaches and Cream – a series of light-hearted but fun lessons – to spread the message about their passion for beauty. So what are Kate’s tricks of the trade when it comes to using beauty products to hold back the years?
Concentrate on your eyebrows
Kate explains that they break up what is a large area of skin on the face and can deflect the eye away from those fine lines. “Nice groomed eyebrows soften the whole face. A we age our eyelids can lose elasticity but great brows will

NEW LOOK: Kate Donnelly of Peaches and Cream on Dale Street help with lift in that whole area.” As our brows can fade with age she also advises using a brow pencil to help with colour and shape.
Confidence.
“Don’t see your age as a negative. It’s important to pamper yourself a little and spend time and effort on your make-up. “The results are always worth it.”
The eyes have it.
Go for softer, smudgier eyes but don’t be afraid of colour. “Colour is about your personality not necessarily just your skin tone. Neutral shades are fine for the day but try a gunmetal grey for night time.”
Be a blush baby.
“Opt for peachy, warmer tones
I JUST FEEL FRESHER AND MORE ALERT
MUM of two Sarah Green has her daughter to thank for her make-over. “My eldest, who is 11, went to a birthday party at Peaches and Cream and I was really impressed. She looked lovely when I picked her up. “Then I saw all these other, gorgeous older girls coming out of the shop. “I thought I’d like to try the make-over experience and I’m very glad I did.” As a busy office manager the 42-year-old from Huyton with Roby says she always found time

to put on foundation, lipstick and mascara but admits she avoided eyeshadow. “It sounds daft but I’ve never really understood what to do with it or how to put it on. “I’ve changed my products over the years but essentially used make-up in the same way for ages so I was intrigued to see the results of what the girls would do.” She took inspiration from the receptionist. “Her eyeshadow was lovely so I asked if I could have something similar on my eyes.”
rather than brights that can be too harsh.”
Invest in a primer.
For some of us these seem like a pointless purchase but Kate says they’re crucial for older skin. “We use L’Oreal Studio Secrets as it smoothes and resurfaces skin before make-up and gives almost a photo-shop effect. Use it after your moisturiser but make sure it’s been well absorbed first.”
Get the foundation right.
We all want good coverage for our skin but that doesn’t mean applying more make-up. “You want a foundation that won’t sit in your fine lines. If it does it will just accentuate them.
“You don’t want a totally matt finish because that will flatten the surface of the skin.” Another tip is to apply with fingers rather than a brush to make sure it doesn’t simply sit on the surface of the skin.
Neutral lip liner.
Tired of your lippy or gloss ‘bleeding’ into the surrounding skin? Use neutral lip liner all over the lips first and then apply lipstick. The liner gives the lipstick something to hang on to,” explains Kate.
Shimmer shimmy.
Shimmer on the brow bone or a touch on the ball of the eye adds that little get you noticed sparkle. “There’s no reason why you can’t up the glamour no matter what your age,” says Kate.
A couple of years ago she had also bought hair extensions but, having worn them once, was looking for tips on how to use them to create different looks. She was, she says, thrilled with the results. “I felt like I looked fresher and more alert and got loads of nice comments from friends. “I didn’t know if it made me look younger but I felt more groomed, more polished.”

Beauty tips of the rich and ageless T
hey are the A listers who grace the red carpets around the world so if anyone should have the inside track on pressing the ageing pause button it’s them. Here are some of those celeb beauty secrets . . . .
Demi Moore Age: 48 The actress, who once admitted to using Austrian leeches to ‘detoxify’ her blood recently tried the Master Cleanse — a diet that includes drinking a maple syrup, lemon water, and cayenne pepper cocktail. Brooke Shields Age: 45 The model-turned-actress raves about her longer, thicker eyelashes, thanks to Latisse, a prescription treatment aimed at growing lashes (for which – coincidentally – the spokesperson). Her beauty secret: Her nightly ritual includes slathering on Creme de la Mer moisturising cream.
Halle Berry Age: 44 The star uses triple fruit acid cleaners to exfoliate her skin and rubs pure Vitamin C on her face, all before moisturising. Delicious. Her beauty secret: Berry has one master facialist to thank for her flawless face - the renowned Christopher Warren at Kinara Spa in LA. “Looking good is about having a good base. It’s about taking care of your skin.”
Her beauty secret? “I moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. No matter how late it is, when I get home, I take the time to clean and moisturise my face. I'm a big believer that if you focus on good skin care, you really won't need a lot of makeup.
Redefine over time
Her beauty secret? She admits to dabbling in Botox. “I use it very sparingly. I want to look natural.” Jennifer Aniston Age: 41 The former Friends star has been known to work out with her personal yoga trainer Mandy Ingber, up to five times a week to stay fit. Her beauty secret? It has to be that hair of hers which always looks in fab condition. Plus those California sun-kissed highlights open up her eyes and lighten her whole look.

Natural approach to holding back the years I
T’S the Holy Grail of the beauty industry - a product that really does hold back the years. But while there is a bewildering choice of lotions and potions on the market there are some simple steps you can take to help yourself fight the ageing process naturally.
Ease up on the alcohol. It dehydrates the body and a lack of moisture spells trouble for the skin.
●
●
The earlier you begin taking care of yourself, the more likely you will stay younger looking.
by SUSAN LEE Don’t smoke. Toxins in ● smoke harm the skin and promote wrinkles and dryness.
●
Keep a steady weight. Any weight loss or gain causes skin to stretch and, as we age, elasticity decreases.
●
Up your intake of oily fish, green veg and fruits. They all promote good health. If it’s looking good on the inside, it will show on the outside. Moderate your drinking of ● coffee, tea or red wine. White teeth are the signature of youth and looking young means taking care of your dental health.
●
Increase how much water you drink. It flushes toxins from the body and promotes
hydration. You should aim to drink 2 litres of water a day. Use a sunscreen, even in ● winter. Sun damage is the number one cause of ageing so look
for moisturisers with an SPF in them.
●
Take to the shade. A tan might look great but that golden glow means skin damage.
●
Exfoliate regularly. It helps slough off dead skin to reveal
newer, cells beneath. And we don’t just mean your face - exfoliate your whole body for a fresher than ever feel.
●
Invest in regular facials. At home ones will do. Exfoliate and then add tea tree oil to hot water, dip a cotton flannel in and apply to the face to open those pores. Finish with moisturiser. Take special care of eyes and ● lips. These areas tend to become dry and wrinkled more
quickly because they are thinner than surrounding skin.
●
Avoid stress. If meditation or yoga aren’t your thing build in some ‘me’ time every week to pamper yourself. A relaxing bath, a long walk or half an hour with a good book works wonders. Exercise three times a week. ● It increases blood flow which promotes good circulation and
muscle tone to help you keep strong and trim.
BEST BUYS TO BEAT THE INEVITABLE AGEING PROCESS ●
LOOKING for a product designed to press pause on the ageing process? We’ve rounded up some the best.
●
Slough off the winter and give skin a radiant glow with Age-Defying Dermabrasion, £48, from Darphine. Use every other night for six weeks, even on the most sensitive of skins, and let the jojoba, silica and pearl get to work, polishing the skin and removing impurities. Remember to use your fingers and exfoliate upwards and outwards in a circular motion. Super creamy and ● deeply nourishing if you’re looking for a night
cream then Advanced Formula Cosmetox, £10.50 from M&S, could be the one. It contains collagen boosting ingredients and is non greasy, producing results in about two weeks.
If you’re in the market for a skin serum check out Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle & UV Damage Corrector, £, from Clinique. It reckons to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles and repair and help prevent damage with results remarkably close to a dermatological laser treatment. Results after 12 weeks showed a 63% drop in visible wrinkles.
●
Market research reckons that the top three best selling anti-ageing ranges are all from Clarins, so experts there must know a thing or two about stopping the clock. One of our favourites is Vital Light Day cream, £59, a gorgeous, glide-on cream that is a joy to use. Containing a powerful combination of plant extracts from across the globe this lightweight formula delivers great luminosity.
●
The eyes have it when it comes to the first sign of ageing. Tackle those crow’s feet with Repairwear Intensive Eye cream, £25, from Clinique. Light and non greasy it’s best used at night.
●
Say goodbye to rough winter skin and hello to spring with this Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow, £35.80, from Elemis. It contains ginger to invigorate the senses and lime to energise while camelia and jojoba iol helps to moisturise and restore softness. Good enough to eat!
●
If you’re after a luscious lipstick that keeps lips moisturised and relieves dryness check out Sisley’s Phyto lip shine range, £25.50. It contains mango butter and polymers to enhance a plumping effect while the range of colours – and there’s one to suit us all –
leave lips soft and dewy. Go on, treat yourself. Bare Escentuals has just launched a primer with ● a difference. Brightening Prime Time, £29 contains a gold fleck to give luminosity to the skin
under your foundation. It claims to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and with foundation over the top should help the years melt away.
●
Bobbi Brown Extra Tinted Moisturising Balm,£33, is great for an older skin. It is an ultra-rich, luxurious formula that blends easily and gives it a dewy, glowing look with light SPF 25 coverage. It’s formulated with glycerin and shea butter too to add plumness. Pep up your decolletage with ● Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Serum, £23.95.
Feedback from testers was hugely positive about this little pot of wonder which targets those hard to treat areas – including the neck and bust area.

T’S a new name on the fashion block - but for at least one style conscious woman it hasn’t arrived a moment too soon. Isme has been launched by Shop Direct Group, the UK’s largest online and home shopping company.. And the face of the new range is actress and Loose Women favourite Lynda Bellingham. “I am thrilled to be a part of a brand that understands that 50+ women still want fashionable clothes, outstanding choice and
prices to suit all budgets and a brand that understands what looks good on a more mature woman’s shape,” says Loose Women favourite Lynda. “Women just want clothes that look good and that fit them properly. isme is the solution to the disappointing ‘one size fits all’ approach of the high street.” The range, which features a bespoke collection of clothing, ‘Savoir at isme’, was created after research using more than 5,000 50 plus women showed they felt labels did not understand changes in
there body shape while many stores hahd an outdated view of women today. “We’re targetting the mature fashion conscious customer who have told us they feel underserved and neglected by the high street.
