CHAMPAGNE corks are popping here at Best of Liverpool as we celebrate our first birthday. It only seems like yesterday that we sat down and decided to produce a monthly magazine to promote all that is fabulous about the city – from the bars and restaurants and amazing architecture – to fashion and shops and the wealth of homegrown talent. And what a whirlwind of a year it has been! Since launching the magazine last August, the Best of Liverpool team set to work sampling glamorous new venues, getting to dine at The Hilton and Sakura, quaffing canapes at the Panoramic and partying at Palm Sugar. With such an amazing food scene here in the city, we’ve prised secret recipes from talented local chefs and brought you the hippest haunts for Christmas parties and catching the World Cup action. As Liverpool is so style conscious, we’ve dedicated ourselves to following the latest fashions, showcasing new designers, from Kirsty Doyle to Ally Mac, as well as bringing you interior trends from local experts on how to transform your pad into Paradise. We’ve visited lots of salons and spas to try and test some of the latest beauty and hair treatments and have even been treated to the odd much-needed make-over.

We’re shared our diary dates highlighting the most happening events in the city from shows and gigs to festivals and launches. We attended the premiere of Fifteen Minutes That Shook The World, took the Fab Four Tour, went underground on the Queensway Tunnel Tour and much more – all in the name of research! And we’ve explored every inch of Merseyside, bringing you the best places to go from Woolton to Waterloo, identifying hidden gems you may not have known about. Not forgetting the mums and dads, we’ve introduced a kids’ section featuring the cutest clothes for your mini mes, including some great ideas for family days out. But most of all, we’ve tried to capture the irrepressible spirit of the people of Liverpool, interviewing some of the most talented actors, artists, comedians and musicians, from actor David Morrissey and wordsmith Willy Russell to comedian Ricky Tomlinson and lovely Liz McClarnon. We’ve had a ball and are looking forward to carrying on the good work, spreading the word about Liverpool and helping to put it on the map. We hope you’ll enjoy the ride!

170TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL CUNARD LIVER POOL

CUNARD and Liverpool are inextricably linked and, when the liner Queen Victoria (left) visited the city on July 26, it marked the 170th LIVERPOOL anniversary of the first Cunarder leaving Liverpool. To mark this astonishing milestone in the history of both Cunard Line and the city, a special 84-page glossy publication has been produced. Priced at £3.99, it charts the major milestones in the history of the most famous name in shipping — many of them marked when its world headquarters were in the Pier Head building bearing its founder’s name. It records the memorable visits by other Cunard Queens — notably QE2 — and looks ahead to more as well as the return of other famous cruise lines to Liverpool’s waterfront. It also features the work of one of the world’s foremost maritime artists, Liverpool-born Robert Lloyd, whose paintings have captured more recent and notable events in Cunard Line history. HOLLYOAKS’ STAR SETS OFF ON A SWASHBUCKLING CHARITY TODDLE

It’s all happening in Liverpool

OVER 1,000 miniature pirates and their minders turned out to take part in Barnardo’s Big Toddle recently — a short sponsored walk in aid of Barnardo’s early-years work. The fantastic toddlers donned pirate fancy dress for their 20 minute waddle around Knowsley Safari Park on July 6. Barnardo’s supporter and Hollyoaks’ star, Alex Fletcher, also took part. Speaking at the event, Alex, who recently appeared on Celebrity Masterchef, says: “Barnardo’s does some great work to help some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children in Merseyside and the North West. I’m here today to help raise awareness of their cause and for the children. They’re so cute in their little pirate outfits!” Find out more at www.bigtoddle.co.uk

HUNDREDS of colourful performers from Brouhaha International Street Festival paraded through Clayton Square, Church Street, Whitechapel and Williamson Square on July 22 to mark the launch of City Central BID’s summer programme. As part of the summer programme, which runs until August 26, Williamson Square has been transformed into an ‘urban beach’ with a huge range of activities including a giant sand pit, trampolines and donkey rides. There’s also an authentic Victorian Helter Skelter on the top of Church Street, whilst on Whitechapel, Lord Street and Paradise Street an International street market will take place. To reflect 2010’s status as Year of Health and Wellbeing, throughout the summer programme, Clayton Square is running activities for kids to have fun whilst keeping fit. Plus there’s a summer garden area to relax in together with walking water balls, pedal power scooters and a giant BBC screen. Visit www.citycentralbid.com to find out more.

MARCO PIERRE WHITE DINES OUT AT THE SWAN INN TV CHEF Marco Pierre White recently joined diners at his first northern restaurant, The Swan Inn, to celebrate the success of its first six months. The Kitchen Burnout star joined diners to sample some of his favourite dishes for lunch and dinner service at Aughton restaurant. He says: “The response from the public since opening has been immense, largely due to the choice and quality of food, much of which is sourced locally. “It’s my job to ensure the restaurant maintains this level of service and customers continue to enjoy their culinary experience.” The Swan Inn is Marco’s first UK venture outside the South of England. The TV chef opened his second restaurant — Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Bar & Grill at the Doubletree by Hilton Chester — in February and his third North West venue is set to open next year at Hotel Indigo, Liverpool.

TUCA TUCA ENIGMATIC QUIRKY Oriental accessories at the new Enigmatic store in Cavern Walks shopping centre. Boutique owner, 27 year-old Phemie Chong from Hong Kong, sells everything from jewellery and handbags to hair accessories and casual wear, hand picked from Japan and Korea by Phemie herself. It’s a great place to find oneoff accessories at reasonable prices.

LUSH’S new fragrance was inspired by the fabulously catchy Italian song and dance Raffaella Carra’s ‘Tuca Tuca.’ To celebrate the launch of the perfume, dancers at the cosmetic chain’s Church Street store recently performed the Tuca Tuca in the heart of Liverpool whilst allowing customers to sample the new fragrance. The single is available as a free download when you buy the fragrance in-store or on-line at www.lush.co.uk

AUGUST 10 HUNT FOR LOCAL YOUNG ACTRESS TO HELP THE WIRRAL STRIKE BACK!

LIVERPOOL’S Bang on Top Productions, creators of hit comedy plays One Night in Istanbul and A Tale of Two Chippys, is searching for a talented local young actress to play Anthea in its brand new play. Brick Up: The Wirral Strikes Back, which runs at the Liverpool Empire from September 7-18, is the latest offering from acclaimed Liverpudlian playwright Nicky Allt. This hilarious show takes a tongue in cheek look at the recent economic downturn and the traditional rivalries between Liverpool and the Wirral. Nicky and Bang on Top Productions are giving young women (aged 18 or above) the chance to audition for the part of Anthea, a character in her late teens. Auditions for this role will take place on August 6. Those wishing to audition should email bangontopcasting@gmail.com with their contact information and details of any relevant experience, plus a recent photograph.

CATERERS DISH UP ARTISTIC MENU FOR SIR PETER BLAKE BESPOKE catering company Pickled Walnut has created an art-inspired menu fit for Britain’s leading pop artist Sir Peter Blake. Sir Peter — who created The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band record cover — tucked in to a colourful array of dishes at an exclusive charity dinner at Ness Botanic Gardens in Wirral. The most popular dish on the art-themed menu was love dessert — a combination of chocolate, strawberry and lemon puddings presented with a love stencil in the style of Sir Peter. Pickled Walnut managing director, Jamie Anderson, says: “Sir Peter’s work is extremely inspired and, as we knew we would be surrounded by art-lovers, we took the opportunity to show off our own culinary creative side.” The event was hosted in conjunction with Liverpool art gallery Editions Ltd and raised over £8,000 for children’s charity Kids Company - which gives support to deprived inner city children.

HEATHCOTE CELEBRATES 20TH IN STYLE IT’S 20 years since star-chef Paul Heathcote opened his flagship restaurant and to mark the milestone, Heathcotes’ new pastry chef, Monto Mansour, has designed a special 20-cake birthday platter. Monto has worked at some of the top Michelin eateries in the UK and France and will be developing recipes with head chef at the Olive Press on Castle Street and Simply Heathcotes on Beetham Plaza. Paul says: “It is our loyal customers who have supported us this far and I wanted to make sure the celebrations were as much a thank you to them as anything else. “The restaurant landscape has changed almost beyond recognition since I started but it is interesting that a lot of the dishes we were doing 20 years ago, such as black pudding, are back in fashion.” Over the last two decades, Paul’s empire has expanded to include Simply Heathcotes in Liverpool; Grado, a Spanish fine dining restaurant in Manchester; London Road, a celebrity favourite in Alderley Edge; and a portfolio of seven Olive Press restaurants across the North West. For more information, visit www.heathcotes.co.uk

QUIRKY MAP CAPTURES TRUE ESSENCE OF LIVERPOOL TRADITIONAL Liverpool focal points like Lime Street Station and Anfield are jostling for position next to Paul McCartney’s old house and Cherie Blair’s former school on a quirky map being displayed at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Southport. Liverpool by Stephen Walter combines the personal insights of the artist from various trips to the city with in-depth knowledge from locals. The intricate, complex map, which is on permanent display at the fourstar hotel, is geographically accurate, but Stephen has also painstakingly recorded a number of memorable viewpoints of the city to create a warts and all tour, translating its vibrant character to paper. Such highlights include the expulsion of late author Beryl Bainbridge from the Merchant Taylor’s Girls’ School for writing a poem about sex. Stephen tackled the project after meticulously mapping his home city of London in a piece of work published by TAG Fine Arts. He says: “I originally intended a short, five-day visit to Liverpool, planning to combine and juxtapose factual research with the knowledge and opinions of locals. “Things didn’t quite go to plan, as I ended up falling in love with a woman I met there and made numerous other friendships. I was overwhelmed by the pride and energy with which Liverpudlians talk and feel about their city. “So my map was far larger and more detailed than I’d originally planned, including the quirks, idiosyncrasies, stereotypes, places of interest and etymology of place names I came across. It’s a celebration of the masonry and heart of Liverpool.”

BEATLES DAY SCULPTURE UNVEILED LIVERPOOL-based artist and a founder member of The La’s, Mike Badger, recently unveiled Musical Composition, a sculpture paying tribute to the musical legacy of The Beatles. Commissioned to mark the city’s third annual Beatles Day on July 10, the permanent sculpture is in Cavern Walks shopping centre, which is built on the sight of the original Cavern Club and houses the only life-size statue of the Beatles standing together in the UK. Mike, from Wavertree, says: “My own entrance into Liverpool’s music scene happened on the same street as the Cavern so the area signifies a lot of importance to me. The idea was to use a collection of reclaimed musical instruments placed together in an assemblage, reflecting musical composition.”

PRIDE AND PIRATES

ROLL UP, ROLL UP A FEW drops of rain failed to dampen the excitement at the recent launch of the Pride festival. There was a real circus atmosphere at the event held at the glamorous Sakura restaurant in the Exchange Flags, as revellers strutted down the red carpet to get a sneaky peak at what’s to come during Liverpool’s first official Pride festival this month. Guests were treated to live performances by local crooner Alan Cross, and a spectacular set by X Factor favourite Rowetta. Meanwhile Millie Dollar wowed the crowd with her Blue Martini burlesque show followed by a soulful acoustic performance by Jennifer John and Hannah's Bar favourite Ogo.

SHIVER ME TIMBERS! PIRATES and buccaneers headed to the Albert Dock in their droves last month for a day of swashbuckling skullduggery. The second International Mersey Pirate Muster saw sea dogs, barnacle-backs and Old Salts crossing cutlasses as their magnificent tall ships battled for Liverpool’s lost treasure in the Siege of Canning Dock. And there was enough cannons and muskets to wake Davy Jones himself. Young pirates unearthed hidden prizes by finding the legendary pieces of eight and got to learn the ropes and listen to yarns as old as the river at the family fun day. The pirates also attempted to win a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the number of pirates, or people dressed as pirates, in any one place, in order to raise money for Liverpool Unites. The results are still being verified.

Festival of fashion From high fashion to laid-back chic, anything goes at festivals this year, says Katie McLoughlin WHEN it comes to festival fashion, Glastonbury is always a good place to take your inspiration from. This year, those frantically searching for an outfit for Creamfields, Liverpool Pride or International Beatle Week have plenty to mull over, as Glasto’s best-dressed festival-goers embraced an eclectic range of looks. Uber-short denim shorts and tousled tresses were de rigeur at the 40th festival and, with unusually sunny weather, many of our favourite fashionistas even went as far as to ditch their beloved Hunter wellies. Alexa Chung favoured geek-chic brogues, whilst queen of festival-fashion, Kate Moss, opted for a grunge style

in cut-off denim shorts with a simple black vest, oversized khaki shirt and chunky, black boots. Current darling of the fashion world, Emma Watson, brought a bit of glamour to the occasion with a gold corset top paired with mid-length denim shorts, and Hollywood star, Kate Hudson, worked a pretty printed tea-dress and sandals. With such a mix of styles to plump for, whether you opt for a glam, girly or grunge look, you’re sure to hit the right note at August’s festivals.

IT might have worked out alright for Samantha in SATC2, but turning up to an event wearing the same dress as someone else is every fashionloving girl’s worst nightmare. So to help Merseyside’s fashion elite stand out from the crowd, a new, exclusive ladies’ boutique has opened its doors in Formby. Owned by Karen and Sam Tasker, Eloise, which opened in June, prides itself on offering something different. Karen says: “We cater for style-savvy women who want high-fashion items that they’re not going to see anyone else wearing, so rather than stocking big name brands which are now quite widely available, we’ve sourced exclusive fashions from small independent labels, up-andcoming designers and cult international brands.” The mother-and-son team have done all of the buying for the boutique and Eloise’s impressive selection of labels includes Cosmopolitan’s Designer of the Year Kate Fearnley; Precious Formals; Elisa Cavalletti from Italy; Spanish brand Desigual; cult LA labels Super Trash and Robin Jeans and new British designer Kelly Ewing to name just a few. Set over two floors, the Church Road store has gorgeous daywear, accessories and jewellery on the ground floor, with glamorous evening and occasion wear on the first floor. An exciting new autumn/winter collection is due to arrive in store in late August/early September. To add the finishing touches to your outfit, Eloise has a fantastic range of accessories and jewellery, plus there’s a former bridal seamstress on the team who can tailor the clothes to flatter your figure – for free. Visit Eloise at 33 Church Road, Formby, L37 8BQ, call 01704 833 999, log onto www.eloise-fashion.co.uk or check out the Eloise Fashion Facebook page.

Men's khaki gilet, £10, from George at ASDA

CINEMA screens this summer are going to be quite literally exploding with over-the-top violence and cute one-liners. It can only mean one thing... the A-Team is back in town. Any child of the 1980s will remember the original series, where four slightly conspicuous comrades worked as guns for hire, deftly evading capture by the government for a “crime they didn’t commit.” The A-Team were a crack commando unit who escaped military prison and set about helping the oppressed and trying to make a little money. Led by George Peppard aka Hannibal (with muscle provided by Mr T) they’d get out of any scrape by building armoured vehicles and weapons out of the scrap junk that the baddies carelessly left lying around! Oh and they had some classic catchphrases, including “I ain’t getting on no plane, fool!” You’ll all be saying it when you go on holiday. And now, after some 24 years in hiding, the guys are back; bigger and better than ever, and more fashionable too! It’s military chic, A-Team style, so don your ripped denims and khaki shirt, grab your dog-tags and become a real action man this summer. Grey leather jacket, £120, from Burton

FESTIVAL FIT It's hard for us ladies to look fab at festivals with all the rain, so to ensure you Liverpool lasses stay as glamorous as always we've picked a small selection of must-haves to get you started. Remember Creamfields is on the way this month and whether you're going for the day or pitching your tent for the weekend, keep yourself looking good with a few essentials.

Look great and keep your hair in order with this Tammy scarf, £7, from Bhs

Eliminate frizz before you go with this new Advance Techniques, Frizz Control Lotus Shield, £7, from Avon

Shellac nails it Emma Thompson soothes her stresses away with a massage and manicure at Herbert of Liverpool

Keep your hair looking clean and refreshed with this mini Poker Straight dry shampoo, 50ml £1.95, from Lee Stafford

Get rid of festival mud and waterproof mascara with these Kind to Skin cleansing wipes which have vitamin goodness, £2.99, from Simple

Most girls can't do without their mascara and this No7 Intense Volume waterproof mascara is ideal, £11, from Boots

AS everyone around me is painfully aware, I’m house hunting, so when Herbert of Liverpool offered a relaxing back massage I jumped at the chance. I made my way to the salon which is just a couple of minutes walk from Central Station on Hanover Street, and was greeted with the pleasantly striking decor and a smile from the receptionist. My beauty therapist, Hayley Wignall, quickly made me feel welcome and at ease dispelling any pre-conceptions I had about not being ‘glamorous’ enough to venture into Herbert’s! But that’s not to say the salon wasn’t awash with plush furnishings and offering the latest beauty treatments. One new product available was the latest nail system, CND Shellac. So while at the salon it seemed the perfect time to give it a try, ensuring my nails look fab while scrolling through those property websites. I took a seat at the sleek nail bar while Hayley let me choose from one of the beautiful Shellac colours, but I decided to opt for a classic French-manicured look. Hayley explained for this new system it’s your nails that are tended to first so you can apply the varnish to a dry base. The colours go on like varnish but wear like gel nails so apply smoothly and are hardwearing for up to 14 days! So it was time to put them to the test.

My cuticles were pushed back and trimmed then a base coat applied which helps strengthen the nails, then I pop my hand in the CND UV lamp which is specifically designed to work with the Shellac products and quickly dries my nails after each coat. The main colour is carefully applied with smooth lines for the tips and then a top coat giving a beautiful shine and flawless finish. I was amazed at how fast the UV lamp worked, my nails were instantly dry to touch – something I never seem to achieve at home! My manicure was completed with some cuticle conditioner then a gentle CND citrus moisture scrub followed by an illuminating masque and finished with a hydrating lotion which left my hands feeling beautifully soft and moisturised. Then it was time to continue my pampering with a back, neck and shoulder massage – wonderful! The treatment room was gently lit by candlelight and a towel covered me up to my lower back, I relaxed while Hayley picked out the Elemis De-Stress massage oil which has a soothing blend of oils including lavender. My house hunting stresses and work were soon forgotten as the gentle music played in the room and Hayley began kneading and applying pressured

movements to ease any tension in my back and shoulders. Working over my whole back from small circular to large sweeping movements, the right amount of pressure was applied – not too gentle and not too vigorous. The massage continued across my shoulders and up to the top of my neck then over to the top of my chest. It was perfect. A week later my nails are still in great shape, not a chip or discolouring in sight. So girls I’d certainly recommend giving Shellac a try!

Where is it? In the city centre-based Bling Bling Building, just a couple of minutes walk from Central Train Station.

What does it do? Herbert of Liverpool offers everything from hair styling, colour and extensions in the sumptuous salon to beauty treatments from waxing and tanning to facials as well as dermal fillers and Botox.

Rallying ride for men Emma Thompson talks to Matthew Bowen who's hitting the 100-mile road for men's health LOCAL PR account manager, Matthew Bowen, is swapping his laptop for lycra in a 100-mile charity cycling challenge this September. This tough ride isn’t made any easier by the fact Matthew has decided to do the ‘Pro Ride,’ so will be tackling the same route that the professionals take the week before. Organised by Prostate Cancer Charity, the Tour of Britain takes place on September 26 around Staffordshire in a bid to raise awareness and some muchneeded money for the Prostate Cancer Charity. “I decided to take part primarily to raise money for the charity but then also to test myself really,” said Matthew. “Last year I cycled from Newcastle to Edinburgh in three days with Rory Delap from Stoke City FC to raise money for a children’s hospice in Stoke which is where I’m from, and I’ve really got into cycling since then." He added: “Men are notoriously reticent to talk about their health, and I say that from first hand experience, so anything that raises the profile of men’s issues and makes people more comfortable about dealing with them has got to be worth doing something for.” On the day there is a ‘family ride’ which is 1km to 25km, then a ‘challenge ride’ which is 80km and finally the ‘proride’ which is 161km starting between 8am and 10am.

“As I’m doing the Pro Ride it’s exactly the same course as the professional riders will have done the week before, a distance of 100-miles. It allows you to take on the full road stage of the Tour of Britain, beginning and ending in Stokeon-Trent. “It’s a great chance to test myself over the challenging terrain of Staffordshire with the steep hills in the later section of the ride,” says Matthew, who moved to Liverpool in 2000 to work at Radio City then joined the PR team at Ampersand. Around 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year in the UK and 10,000 men die of the disease each year – that’s one man every hour in the UK. The Prostate Cancer Charity aims to fight prostate cancer on every front, through research, support, information and campaigning, ensuring that every man affected by prostate cancer has access to the very best support and information possible. If you want to sign up for the charity ride log on to www.tourride.co.uk or if you want to sponsor Matthew go to www.prostatecancercharity.org.uk/matthewb owen – companies can also sponsor Matthew and their logo will be put on his shirt. If you need support or information regarding prostate cancer log on to www.prostate-cancer.org.uk or call the confidential helpline on 0800 074 8383.

The BIG interview

Empire state of mind Michelle Rushton catches up with Liverpool legend Les Dennis who’s back where he belongs URELY entertainer Les Dennis must know every inch of the stage at the Liverpool Empire by now? For he’s back treading the boards at the city’s famous theatre for the third time this year. After playing the panto dame in Peter Pan over the festive period, he returned to the Empire in February as Mr Fulton in Disney’s High School Musical 2, Live on Stage. And later this month, he will star in the smash hit, award-winning musical, Hairspray, which will be staged from August 17 – September 4. After touring the UK with the show, he’s glad to be coming home. “I’m really excited to be coming back to Liverpool,” said the born and bred Scouser who has since settled down south. “It’s my hometown – everybody’s here – all my family.” And he’s delighted to be playing at the theatre which inspired his dreams of a career in showbiz. After watching Tommy Steele in Jack And The Beanstalk as a child, he says he thought “I want to do that.” Growing up in Garston, he left Quarry Bank High School and got straight to work carving out a career in comedy, earning his stripes as a stand up comedian in working men’s clubs. His big break came when he won the ITV talent show, New Faces, in 1974 which led to Les appearing in numerous shows such as Russ Abbot’s Madhouse. He joined forces with impressionist Dustin Gee launching the comedy series The Laughter Show and went on to host Family Fortunes for 15 years. Later, he appeared in The Bill, Holby City and Extras. As well as becoming one of Britain’s most popular TV entertainers, Les has also stacked up a long list of theatre, film and radio credits.

S

He made his film debut in Intimate Relations with Julie Walters and Rupert Graves and in 2008 he published his critically acclaimed memoirs, Must The Show Go On? His stage work has ranged from sell out pantos to Shakespeare plays and he has carved a real niche in musical theatre taking many a leading role such as Me & My Girl, Chicago and Eurobeat, to name but a few. In Hairspray, Les takes on the role of crazy joke shop owner Wilbur Turnblad, father of Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and a big passion for dancing. Winning a spot on the local TV dance programme, The Corny Collins Show, Tracy is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. She has her eye on the crown of Miss Hairspray and local heartthrob Link Larkin and her goofy but loveable father, Wilbur, who owns the Har-De-Har Hut joke shop encourages her to follow her dreams. Les admits, he’d had his eye on the part since he went to watch the show for himself. “I went to see it and thought ‘I’d love to play the part of Wilbur,’” he reveals. And a little encouragement from the director of High School, who said: “You’d be a great Wilbur,” convinced him to go for the audition. He will be joining fellow Scouser Michael Starke on stage, who plays his wife Edna Turnblad for a marriage made in Merseyside! Les is gladly leaving the wearing of the frocks to Michael, as he had his fill of ladies’ clothing playing the dame in Peter Pan! “I’ll leave the dresses for Michael this time,” he laughs. Laurie Scarth, who plays the fabulous Tracy Turnblad, also has Liverpool roots as her dad is from Kirkby. Les adds: “It is a great, joyous show really gets the audience going. It has won

numerous awards and we always get a standing ovation. “It is set in Baltimore in 1962, during a time of racial segregation and Tracy wants everyone to integrate. It’s a real feelgood show with brilliant songs, great comedy and a thought provoking story.” After touring the UK, you’d think Les would be taking some time out for a little breather, as the 56-year-old is a real handson dad to his daughter, two-year-old Eleanor, which must be exhausting, but he’s already got lots more projects in the pipeline. September will see the launch of Les’ new kids TV show on CBBC. “I’m hosting a new game show aimed at eight to 12year-olds called Fi, Fi, Fo, Yum set on a giant’s table.” And this Christmas, we may even see him on billboards outside the Empire again, as he can’t resist another panto in his hometown. “It’s going to be an interesting and different one which will be exciting!” he says. “And Eleanor will be at that age where she’s enjoying and knowing Christmas, so it will be lovely to be back.”

Hairspray will be staged at the Liverpool Empire from August 17 to September 4. For tickets, call the box office on 0844 847 2525 or visit www.LiverpoolEmpire.org.uk

AUGUST 10

A heavenly location Michelle Rushton discovers why Sandi Thom is hanging around the altar at Alma de Cuba WHEN it came to choosing a location for her latest music video, Sandi Thom decided to revisit one of her old student haunts. The Scottish singing sensation, famed for her chart topping single, I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker, chose glamorous restaurant and bar, Alma de Cuba, as the location for the shoot. The dramatic former church features predominantly in the video for her new single, Gold Dust, which is due out later this summer. It will be the second single released from Sandi’s third studio album, Merchants and Thieves. But why Liverpool? The artist, originally from Banff, now lives in London and has a flat in LA, but she has a close connection with the city. At the age of 17, Sandi was the youngest ever student to be accepted into the prestigious Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) and spent five years here. She has since set up an independent record label, Guardian Angels, which is based in Liverpool and run by her brother. “I just wanted to make use of all the brilliant locations here,” explains Sandi. “I have had some great times at Alma de Cuba. I used to come here a lot, and it is the perfect setting for the Gold Dust video, as it is both striking and intimate at the same time. We filmed here during the early hours of Monday morning to catch the natural lighting on the altar."

Sandi also filmed at Formby beach, driving a vintage Triumph in the sunset with the wind in her hair. “It was very windy but it looks really cool!” Graduating seven years ago, so much has happened for Sandi. Her first album, Smile... It Confuses People, debuted at number one in the UK charts, selling over 700,000 copies worldwide, and was nominated at the Brit Awards for Best British Single. But Sandi has fond memories of her time in the city. “My whole thing began here,” she reflects. “As a poor student, I used to love Quiggins and my favourite bars were the Magnet, Hannah’s Bar, the Pilgrim and the Picket.” After a break from the music industry, the new album produced by her record label, is a complete change of direction for Sandi. She says: “It has a blues/rock style, so I am excited to hear what my fans think. My new song is a bitter sweet tale of how something precious slips through your fingers. It was inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Black Magic Woman.” Sandi will be returning to the city in September when she goes on tour at the O2 Academy Liverpool on September 28. And although it’s many miles from her Aberdeenshire roots, she admits when she plays here, it feels like home. “For me it’s the people and the way they are. I’ve got lots of Celtic connections and it’s skin to what I’m used to here.”

OK so they’re not strictly from Liverpool, but this 60s and mod influence rock band whose members hail from all over the country, has adopted the city as its unofficial home and a base for band meetings. The band, which has been playing together for many years and has a nationwide following, recently recorded its new album six against eight to be released this month at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool. This came about after Will Sergeant, the legendary guitarist from Echo & The Bunnymen, contacted the band after discovering them on myspace. The band jumped at the chance to record at the city’s legendary recording studio and have spent the best part of the year here recording the new album. They will launch the album at Parr Street Studios on Friday, August 13 but in the meantime, catch them on www.youtube.com and www.myspace.com/dcfontana

RICHARD Wilde’s bespoke mural wallpaper is in demand. The Liverpool creative entrepreneur is transforming the interiors of homes and commercial premises all over the city with restaurants, bars and style conscious city dwellers clamouring for his latest designs. Richard, 22, made his name in the arts community as the founder of Artybuzz, a website with over 1,500 members which specialises in promoting the work of predominantly local artists and whose work is sold all over the world. Now, through his new website, www.muralswallpaper.co.uk, people can choose from thousands of images of music icons, classic art, vintage cars and famous cityscapes or they send in their own photographs or images. Liverpool ONE’s Zelig’s bar was one of the first customers to place an order and Richard’s work can also be seen in Modo on Concert Square.

TOXTETH artist and poet, Alice Lenkiewicz, has painted six of history’s most profound women for an exhibition at Liverpool Cathedral. Alice, who earned her degree and lectured at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk, has recently set up her own non profit making company – The Toxteth Art Gallery. Her research is based on the noble women in the stained glass windows of the Lady Chapel and the six paintings include, Kitty Wilkinson beside the River Mersey, Agnes Jones past and future, Elizabeth Fry and the patchwork quilt, Grace Darling’s heroic rescue, Josephine Butler meets the women of the Oakum rooms and Christina Rossetti: The Annunciation. She says: “I have found creating this exhibition fascinating, looking into the pasts of six wonderful, strong and inspiring women who I feel are role models for today’s society.” The exhibition will be open from August 3 – 27. into one unique movement.” The group chose the name 'Apex' to reflect both the heights involved with the sport and the team's aspiration to reach the pinnacle of the Parkour scene. A fact that’s quickly confirmed when Nick reels off their busy schedule. “We've had a hectic year so far!” he laughs modestly. “It started with me and Owen Hegarty, another Apex member, filming a horror movie called Devil's Playground, that's due out this September with Danny Dyer. But we've also travelled back and forth across Europe for various photo shoots. up the group in 2003 after being introduced to Parkour by friend and world renowned Parkour practitioner, Daniel Ilabaca. Just 12–years –old at the time, Nick didn't let his tender age stop him pursuing his dreams. And unbelievably considering that Apex Parkour's youngest member is just 15 and oldest members are 19 the group was one of the first four free running team's in the country and has now been wowing crowds for almost eight years. Training takes place for seven to 10 hours every day, but, Nick says, Parkour is much more than an adrenaline pumping extreme sport. He explains: “The easiest way to describe what we do, would be to call it the 'art of movement'. A cult French discipline, Parkour – or l'art du déplacement which roughly translates as the art of movement – is a strangely beautiful mix of gymnastics, dance and agile Spiderman-like moves. In its purest form, the urban sport is about getting from one place to another in the fastest way possible and the 12 members of Apex Parkour from Liverpool, Wirral and Warrington can often be spotted leaping, vaulting and climbing their way across the city's skyline. Even celebrities like Jackie Chan and Jake Gyllenhaal are said to have taken part in training. Nick explains enthusiastically: “We encourage everybody to get involved with us, even if it's just

I spend the majority of my weekends accommodating guests from all over the world, sharing my experience with them and helping them refine techniques, exchange training ideas and philosophies. WHETHER you're a budding chef or can just about microwave a ready meal, this year's latest kitchen trends will have you clamouring to find your ‘inner’ Jamie Oliver. All about gloss and glamour, a new kitchen can give your home instant style kudos. And with many people still feeling the pinch, it seems more and more of us are investing in a new kitchen to entertain at home. Phill Oliver, from Capricorn Kitchens (www.nonamekitchens.com) in Bootle explains: "I know it's somewhat of a cliché, but 'staying in really is the new going out' and we've seen a big increase in people investing in new kitchens. One of the most popular trends this year are gloss slab doors and dark wood grains. “A statement of urban chic, they create a streamlined, sleek style and look great with stainless steel appliances, frosted glass, cleverlyinstalled feature lighting and contrasting white flooring. “Shaker-style units are also high in demand. It's a design that's been popular since the 1950s and is equally at home in a town-house or rustic country cottage. With both traits of the modern and classic, they can be dressed up or down and this year the design even comes with curved doors.” When it comes to appliances, Phill predicts that smart shoppers should be opting for seamlessly, almost hidden, integrated appliances - with – sized oven hoods that create a dramatic focal point. Smooth, curved work surfaces are another trend gaining momentum, and as more and more home-owners blur the lines between the kitchen and living areas, furniture is also becoming more

multi-functional with storage spaces combined with low seating. But what are the best ways to spend your pennies wisely? Choosing your new kitchen is an important investment – not just to improve the look of your home but for your family and social life as well. Phill adds: “We always recommend that customers sit down and make a note of what they use their kitchen for and think about their lifestyle. Do you enjoy cooking and entertaining friends? Will it be open plan to a dining area or family room? Are you style-conscious and like focal design points and the latest technology? Whatever your requirements, a good designer should be able to plan your kitchen to enhance your home and make life easier. “Hone in on features that you love and make the most of them too. From making a feature out of your exposed brick wall with an Aga and creating a large family-friendly island to adding feature lighting around your worktops perfect for parties, splurge on a few factors that mean the most to you.” With dozens of different designs to suit every home and lifestyle, it's easy to cook up some inspiration your kitchen.

FUN AND GAMES NO day out at the beach is complete without some fun games to play so here are just a few to get you started:

WHILST most children view the seemingly endless summer holidays with excitement and anticipation, for many parents it’s nothing short of a nightmare. Not only is there the problem of finding things to do each and every day but there is also the small matter of keeping the kids happy without having to take out a second mortgage. But don’t worry help is at hand. You can’t beat a good old fashioned family day out at the beach and want to know the best bit? It’s cheap and cheerful as well! Liverpool is in a great location with more beaches than you can shake a stick at within a two hour drive, so sit back, relax and enjoy the ride... Just a short drive along the coast from Liverpool and you have beaches galore at Crosby, Formby, Ainsdale and Southport which are all ideal for a family day out. Crosby enjoys a fantastic long sandy beach and is also home to Anthony Gormley’s Another Place sculptures which consist of 100 life-size, cast-iron statues which spread for nearly two miles along the coast and over half a mile out to sea. Formby is home to the National Trust Red Squirrel Reserve where it is possible to catch a glimpse of the increasingly rare red squirrel and

offers a great walk for the whole family down to the beach through the pine woods. A little further along the coast are Ainsdale’s famous sand dunes (interesting fact, did you know that the Sefton coastline boasts 20% of the UK’s sand dune system?) and the beach here is perfect for family picnics. And not forgetting good old Southport which has been a great place for a family day out for many years and is ideal for making sandcastles, going on donkey rides and enjoying some good old fashioned family fun. Over the water and Wirral boasts some 25 miles of fabulous coastline. The beach at Hoylake is about two miles wide and nearly seven miles long, making it a fantastic choice for a day at the beach. At its south western end is West Kirby beach which might only be 300 metres long but what it lacks in size it makes up for in popularity, proving to be one of Wirral’s most popular stretches of coastline. New Brighton is currently undergoing a £60m redevelopment and the beach is now returned to its former glory and with recent news that donkey rides are being brought back to the beach here, New Brighton is set to

Designer threads for little ones EVERYONE knows that Liverpool lasses are some of the best dressed in the country, so there is no reason why our kids shouldn’t be just as well turned out. And it is with this in mind that children’s clothes shop, Kathryn’s is on a mission to make sure our little angels are as renowned for their sartorial elegance as their mums and dads. Situated on Prescot Road in Old Swan and stocking more designer names than you’ve had hot dinners — think Dior, DKNY, Timberland, Oilily, Graziella and Mona Lisa — the shop is literally bursting with clothes to kit your children out from head to foot. And talking of feet, Kathryn’s also stocks all the

latest Dior and D&G trainers as well as a fabulous range of Miss Sixty shoes for girls. Catering for children from zero up to 12–years–old (16 years old for girls), the shop has been in the Stewart family for nearly 40 years with current owner, Kathryn taking over from her parents some 10 years ago. They built up the business on traditional family values, something Kathryn has worked hard to maintain, so whilst providing the children of Liverpool and beyond with the latest, cutting edge fashion, she also prides herself on offering an impeccable level of good old fashioned customer service.

Summer in the city

AUGUST 10

Look again at Liverpool Paul Baker gets better acquainted with some of the architectural wonders of our city that we take for granted WE are all so familiar with our city. The Pier Head, the Liver Buildings, Castle Street, Liverpool ONE – we might see these places every day. But do we really notice them? It’s fair to say that in our busy daily lives the time spent walking through the city streets is merely a necessary part of getting from A to B. The design of the buildings we pass at street level barely registers with us, and how often do we raise our heads and see their upper levels? Yet Liverpool is a place of architectural wonders with more listed buildings than any city in the UK outside of London. This side of our cultural heritage should certainly not be overlooked which is why in June the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) launched its North West Architecture Festival 2010 in the city from within the Port of Liverpool building, one of our famous Three Graces. To coincide with this was Liverpool’s Waterfront Architecture Festival, which invited the public to join a series of architectural tours called Walk the Front, aiming to throw a spotlight upon the grand and influential architecture that we walk past every day. I went along on one of these guided walks and was suitably struck about the quality of the great city buildings I take for granted. Meeting at the muchmaligned new Pier Head terminal building, our tour was led by Mushtaq Saleri from Studio Three Architects, who is a council member of the Liverpool Architectural Society. Like many others, he’s not too impressed with the new Pier Head building, but is a fan of the new World Museum that sits just along the waterfront, which mixes flowing lines with angular edges but stays sympathetic to the great buildings around it. And so begins the walk and talk, a fascinating romp past the Graces, up Water Street to the Town Hall, and then along Castle Street with its charming terrace hotchpotch of architectural styles all bustling for attention. Then, cutting through beyond the Crown Court building to reach the Chavasse Park area of Liverpool One and some of the city’s newer architecture, before our tour winds

down to its conclusion at the Albert Dock. Along the way we’re enlightened about how important the external appearance of the city’s banks and financial institutions were and still are. They needed to look powerful and impregnable – a safe place to look after your money. There were many highlights of the tour, encouraging us to look up and appreciate the wonders of our city every day. Put probably the star of the show was Oriel Chambers on Water Street – the world's first

metal-framed glass curtain walled building. It inspired the first skyscrapers that made Chicago a city of towering importance in terms of global architecture, yet it all started here in Liverpool in 1864 with local architect Peter Ellis’ building. RIBA North West and the Liverpool Architectural Society are planning future architecture walks, perhaps during the Heritage Open Days in September. Details should be on the website in August, so check online for more details: www.liverpoolarchitecture.com

A voyage into space THE architect Giles Gilbert Scott spent a lifetime creating Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral. He entered a competition to design it and was surprised to win at the age of just 21. He died in 1960 but his bold design wasn’t fully realised until 1978. It now stands as testimony to his great skills as an architect, as Scott oversaw the cathedral’s design right down to its finer details, saying of the awe-inspiring interior: “Don’t look at my arches, look at my spaces.” It is exactly these spaces that are most celebrated in The Great Space Tour. As you approach the great building, its colossal sandstone structure pokes above the city buildings long before you reach Hope Street. It’s the largest cathedral in Britain and it feels a little strange as you step through the entrance door of this huge edifice – after all, if the outside is so impressive, what on Earth is the inside going to be like? So it was that I took the Great Space Tour, choosing a Thursday summer’s evening when the cathedral stays open a little later to allow

visitors to see the spectacular views from the tower as dusk falls. Exploring the cathedral on this quiet evening offered perhaps the best opportunity to experience its great spaces. At the same time, awesome and intimate, the genius of Scott was perhaps to use the space inside the cathedral to glorify God. That is certainly what the Great Space Audio Tour invites you to consider, and while you are free to wander the spaces yourself, the guide – available in a variety of languages, a version for deaf visitors and also a version for children – leads you deftly through the cathedral so you won’t miss a thing. Along the way you’ll see the high altar, made of panelled oak, with a breathtaking gold leaf screen beyond. You’ll encounter ornate carvings, paintings, fabulous arches; the calming ambience of the Lady Chapel, the Baptistry and then the Bridge. The Bridge marks the culmination of the Great Space Tour. Here we are invited to stand, literally suspended within the great space that Scott has created, and just try and

take it all in, while angelic choral music plays through your headphones. It’s hard not to feel goosebumps. But before you leave, you have to take in the views from the top of the cathedral’s tower. The journey to the top is not too arduous, thanks chiefly to two lifts which hoist you almost to the highest point of the building, and then there is a series of stairs to negotiate. But it’s worth it, because as you arrive at the tower’s peak, from where you can gaze down across all of Merseyside, you’ll find that you’ve just gone from one great space to another. Stylish road has a lot to offer

Photo: Andrew Teebay

Day and night there’s something for everyone on Allerton Road, says Katie McLoughlin IF you ever needed proof that café culture has arrived in Liverpool, Allerton Road is it. Packed with upmarket salons, glamorous boutiques, stylish restaurants and independent shops, this south Liverpool street has a distinctly continental, cosmopolitan feel. A jewel in south Liverpool’s crown, this atmospheric and bustling road has always been at the heart of Mossley Hill life. Home to a raft of independent stores and local businesses, the trendy thoroughfare has a real sense of community and, with a flurry of swish bars and restaurants opening in recent years, Allerton Road has become the place to be and be seen. Whether you’re a south Liverpool native or a weekend visitor, this vivacious street has a vibrant atmosphere that never fails to impress. The trendy road’s burgeoning restaurant scene and lively night life attracts a diverse, eclectic and styleconscious crowd ranging from chic young professionals to students, young families, local socialites and even the odd celebrity. From gourmet Greek cuisine to contemporary British fayre, Italian, Indian, American, Chinese and Mediterranean culinary delights, Allerton Road’s bountiful selection of restaurants offer a taste of all four corners of the globe. With so many stylish eateries competing for business along this south Liverpool stretch of road, standards are high, making Allerton Road something of a Mecca for foodies. The area also has long-established, independent greengrocers, butchers and fishmongers

where foodies can pick up local produce. B Clark & Family Butchers, for example, sources its poultry, meat and game from local farms and suppliers, whilst B Shrigley & Son, is one of just a few specialist fishmongers left in the city. Of course, there’s more to Allerton Road than wining and dining. At the junction of Allerton Road and Penny Lane is St Barnabas’ Church, where Sir Paul McCartney sang as a choir boy. And, alongside an abundance of eateries and exuberant night-spots, the area is packed with hidden shopping gems. From contemporary salons and independent retailers such as Diggles Jewellery and DIY store, Chandlers, to high street brands like Benetton ladies’ and children’s wear. And chic boutiques catering for style-conscious locals like furniture and interiors specialist, Veranda, and fashion boutique, Desires – where both Abbey Clancy and Danielle Lloyd have been spotted shopping there’s plenty of places to indulge in a little retail therapy. Quirky, independent and at the heart of the community, these local shops and businesses give Allerton Road a unique identity. And, with so much to offer, Allerton Road is unsurprisingly one of the city’s best loved areas. Day and night the trendy road is buzzing and, with so much on their doorstep, locals often find little reason to head into the city centre. So whether you fancy soaking up a bit of Allerton Road’s famous café culture, want to rub shoulders with south Liverpool’s uber-fashionable social set, or indulge in a little retail therapy, a visit to this flourishing thoroughfare won’t disappoint.

The best of the Mediterranean Katie McLoughlin samples some Maltese hospitality ALTA is a real melting pot of Mediterranean cultures and customs that makes even first time visitors, like myself, feel right at home. English is the second official language, the people are famed for their hospitality and, with a clear Sicilian influence on the cuisine and familiar sites like Roman ruins, lavish baroque architecture and red British telephone boxes dotted throughout the land, it doesn’t take long to settle in on the Maltese archipelago – which comprises the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. Visiting with my mum, who came here on honeymoon 28 years ago, we were greeted with a warm smile and a chilled glass of Champagne as we checked into the Fortina Spa Resort in Sliema. Enjoying sea views of Valletta with its huge fortified walls built by the Knights

of St John, plus a renowned spa, the Fortina was the perfect base for our mother-and-daughter short break. After checking in, a porter escorted us to our luxurious spa bedroom – where a bottle of bubbly was waiting on ice – and we familiarised ourselves with the room’s sumptuous spa facilities. From a Jacuzzi behind the enormous bed to a stressbuster massager, steam shower, therapeutic bath and a detoxifying Dermalife machine; plus complimentary body contouring serums, seaweed and mud treatment sachets - the room’s top-notch pampering equipment was a welcome sight to mum and I after a very early start for our flight. After lunching on fresh swordfish in the hotel’s Taste restaurant, we took a ferry across to Malta’s capital, Valletta, where we explored the grid-lined streets, and came across the fortified walls to Fort St Elmo and The Siege Bell War Memorial. That evening we dined in the Fortina’s Teppanyaki restaurant, where our chef performed mesmerising tricks preparing a Japanese feast before our eyes. One of the benefits of dining in a teppanyaki restaurant is the social aspect, as seating is arranged around the grill and, during our meal, we got chatting to a couple from Glossop, who recommended we visit Mdina. The following morning, after an indulgent Champagne breakfast, we took a bus to the medieval walled city of Mdina, which is home to stunning baroque palaces, St Paul’s Cathedral, St Paul’s Catacombs and Roman ruins. Returning to the Fortina for an afternoon of spa pampering, I indulged with a lava shell massage whilst mum sampled the spa’s facilities - including a sauna, aqua meditation room, ice grotto, whirlpool, steam room, reflexology basin and Kneipp walk.

Picture © Malta Tourism Authority

Deeply relaxing, the full body massage which featured warm essential oils and hot basalt stones, left me feeling reinvigorated and my skin buttery soft and smelling divine. With both of us now suitably chilled and a few hours before our dinner reservations in the Fortina’s Can Thai restaurant, we took the opportunity to use a few of our room’s facilities. So whilst I worked out how to fill the Jacuzzi, mum slathered herself in one of the complimentary serums and tested the Dermalife machine, which uses massage, steam, aromatherapy and far infra red waves to detoxify. The treatment left mum feeling refreshed with her skin firmer and, once the Jacuzzi was bubbling nicely, we cracked open our Champagne and enjoyed a decadent soak before dinner. After breakfast on our final full day, we were met in the hotel by Anna, our guide from the Malta Tourism Authority, who whisked us off to Valletta in a private car. Anna, who showed Cherie Blair around when she visited Valletta, took us past the Maltese Prime Minister’s office, Auberge de Castile et Leon, to reach the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Set on the elevated space on the ramparts of St Peter and St Paul Bastion, the gardens offer

spectacular views of the majestic Grand Harbour. Next we headed to St John’s CoCathedral and Cathedral Museum, which was built between 1573 and 1577 by the Knights of the Order of St John. The Cathedral’s plain exterior is in contrast to its exquisite baroque interior featuring a hand-painted ceiling by the artist, Preti, and marble tombs for 450 knights. It’s also packed with treasured artwork commissioned by the Knights, like huge hand-made tapestries and Caravaggio’s Beheading of St John. After a quick stop-off at Caffe Cordina, the oldest bar in Valletta, for a coffee and traditional pastizzi (a Maltese snack made out of puff pastry and ricotta), we headed to the Grand Harbour, where local man, Walt, took us across to the Three Cities – Cospicua, Senglea and Vittoriosa – in his traditional Luzzu boat. For our final evening we dined at the Fortina’s Tigne Brasserie and, from our table, we could see Valletta beautifully lit up at night. Choosing to end the holiday on a high note, before checking out we indulged with one last Champagne breakfast, followed by a radiance boosting facial in the spa. A lovely pre-flight pick-me-up, the nourishing facial was the perfect way to end what had been a fabulous girly short break.
