26 TOP 10 Stylish venues to see in the New Year

Editor’s Letter I CAN’T believe it’s nearly Christmas - where has this year gone? The months have flown since we launched our first issue of Best of Liverpool back in August - but what a fabulous five months it has been. We’ve interviewed the cream of local talent, been invited to all the cool events in the city, tried lots of beauty treatments and checked out all the new bars and restaurants - all in the name of investigative journalism! Over the last few weeks we’ve really been getting into the festive spirit as the city pulls out all the stops to make this Christmas the best ever. I got to sit on Santa’s knee (I believe he’s had to have one replaced since!) and fast-track my Christmas list at his decadent ice palace in Liverpool ONE. Sarah’s been doing her best Jane Torville impression, whizzing round the ice rink in Williamson Square and Katie conquered her fear of heights with a trip on the Liverpool ONE Wheel. Sue’s been getting squiffy on the mulled wine, whilst researching her Christmas

recipes, while Paul sampled the Fab4 experience whilst compiling his list of things to do over the festive break. Meanwhile, Emma ventured North of the city to do her Christmas shopping and we’ve all been cooing over the cute Go Penguins which flew in from the North Pole. This edition we bring you some festive fashions and fast ways to glam up your workwear for those office parties. We advise the fellas on how to buy lovely lingerie for the ladies, and bring them a selection of retro chunky knitwear which is very ‘now.’ And we discover how much talent there is in the city, catching up with Natasha Hamilton, OMD’s Andy McCluskey and some up and coming new faces. For the young at heart, we have a round of Christmas pantos and shows, oh yes we do! And we bring you our guide to what’s on in December, as well as the top 10 places to hang out on New Year’s Eve. Plus, as we’re a generous bunch, we’ve crammed in as many competitions as we can to make your Christmas a very merry one. See you in 2010!

Talk of town YUMMY MUMMY

TESTING THE ICE

SARAH Noon was recently crowned the city’s “Yummiest Mummy” and won a spectacular prize worth over £1,000. Sarah, mum to Henry, three, Ralfie, one and due to have her third baby in March, was nominated in the competition launched by Alma de Cuba to find Liverpool’s hottest mother, by her husband Matt. He says the 31-year-old from Mossley Hill deserves the prize because she is: “Young and gorgeous! Even working part-time and with two young children, she always manages to look glamorous.”

Warren Bradley, Pete Price, and partners from City Central Business Improvement District (BID) tested out the ice rink recently, just before it opened to the public. Bid members and partners gathered to watch a show by International Professional Skaters, Liverpool's very own Donna McCarthy and David McGrouther at the rink at Williamson Square which is now open to the public.

TIME TO CELEBRATE Michelle Rushton finds lots of reasons to be cheerful this festive season COCKTAILS AND DREAMS Conor Foley of top Liverpool bar, Alma De Cuba, was recently crowned the winner at the regional final of the ‘World Class’ bartending competition in Liverpool. Showcasing his exceptional mixology skills at the rum category final, Conor triumphed over stiff competition with his innovative cocktail, Shango Mojito. He wins a place in the prestigious UK final, a trip to Venezuela, the home of Pampero rum, and will also take centre stage on a billboard in Liverpool.

GIRLS NIGHT IN

And she has: “Unlimited love for our boys.” Her prize includes a luxury pamper day for two at Formby Hall Golf Resort and Spa, a consultation and restyle hair make-over with Barbara Daley, Blissful Baby Box from Everyday Maternity, a Venture photoshoot worth £205 for Sarah and her family, a MySpa Clinics Pre Party Package, a Malmasion Girl Nights in/out package for two and 50 free Cuba Libre Cocktails at Alma de Cuba. Sarah says: “I hadn’t a clue Matt had nominated me so it came as a real surprise. He is a bit of a romantic though. “I was made up I’d won. It couldn’t have come at a better time as I am five months pregnant and could do with a bit of pampering!” 04

Philip Armstrong Couture showcased their latest collection, Andrew Collinge styled the models’ hair and provided all of the ladies with a salon voucher and Be My Butler (www.bemybutler.com) provided the eye candy for the night. Scottish TV personality Gail Porter headed to Liverpool to compere the second annual Bananafish Celebrity Fashion Show. It was the second successful year for the Fashion Show in aid of The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. The evening was the brainchild of Liverpool businesswoman Joanna Jones whose friend’s family has been heavily affected by the disease. This year’s star studded event took place at Newz Bar last month featuring a drinks reception, the catwalk show, a fabulous raffle and auction with some amazing prizes, live music and Celebrity DJ’s sets. Joanna, who is managing director of Bananafish Management said: “Having seen my close friend’s mum, brother and sister all die from this awful disease, I felt it only right to try and raise some money to help try and find a cure. Due to the nature of my artist management business, I know that I am in the right position to really make a difference.”

NOVEMBER 09 WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

LIPA STUDENTS GET THEIR KICKS Hundreds of people turned up to see LIPA musicians display their talents in a shop window thanks to the latest retail brand to arrive in the city. Up and coming bands and solo artists were on show all day at Footasylum’s new Bold Street store, giving shoppers a flavour of some of the latest sounds coming out of the college, whose former students include The Wombats and Sandi Thom. Eddie Lundon, of China Crisis and a music lecturer at LIPA, which was cofounded by Sir Paul McCartney, says: “It was great for the students to perform in a slightly different environment to what they’re used to.”

LADIES’ NIGHT

WAR OF THE WORLDS Liz McClarnon is the cat that got the cream since she clinched a starring role in The War of the Worlds. Back by phenomenal demand, Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds - Alive on Stage! is set to return to the Echo Arena on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The Atomic Kitten star will join singing and acting sensation Jason Donovan, and Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward in the highly anticipated new production.

ALDER HEY IMAGINE APPEAL Art lovers in Liverpool were able to treat themselves to an evening of art indulgence at the ‘Imagine on Canvas’ event organised to support the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. The inaugural event was held in November at the UK’s leading

exhibition centre FACT. Eminent North West artists including Elaine Preece Stanley, Francis Timmons and Edward Timmons donated 80 exclusive pieces of art from their own collections to be sold at Imagine on Canvas and 100% of the money raised will go to help the work of the world famous children’s hospital.

NETWORKING AT SAKARA One of south Liverpool’s most stylish restaurants, Sakara hosted its first networking event on Monday, November 16 for local business women. The event proved hugely successful and by the end of the evening, it was standing room only. Guests enjoyed champagne and canapes before being treated to reflexology treatments and manicures. Local companies represented at the event included Elaine Cunningham Interiors, The Style Clinic, The Dressing Room, Jane McNicholl Designs and Bloom. Owner of Sakara, Claire O'Regan was delighted with the turnout saying: “I never expected this many people to come! Everyone seems to be having a really nice time and the atmosphere is very relaxed. I'll definitely be holding another event in the New Year so watch this space.”

WATERMELON COCKTAILS ALL ROUND A good time was had by all at the launch party of the new website for Watermelon Studio held at Static on Roscoe Lane. There was a great turn out at the event to celebrate the website created by Delicious Creative (Liverpool) to promote Watermelon Studio, an independent hair studio located in the Static Studios. Guests enjoyed delicious watermelon cocktails whilst the Grapes Jazz Band added some great mood music to the evening.

It was ladies’ night at Liverpool Women’s hospital which recently held its first ever Women’s Health Evening. Visitors enjoyed talks by leading medical experts including Charles Kingsland, clinical director of the Hewitt Centre for Reproductive Medicine, and Kevin Hancock, consultant plastic surgeon. The event included yoga demonstrations, massage, relaxation techniques, menopause advice and breast health and awareness. Helen Hanratty, director of marketing, said: “This was the first event of its kind at Liverpool Women’s hospital and it was fantastic to see so many ladies enjoying interesting talks, browsing informative stalls and relaxing with massages.”

JEWEL IN THE DENTAL CROWN Liverpool dental boutique, Ollie and Darsh, has been crowned Most Attractive Practice in the UK at The Private Dentistry Awards. Ollie and Darsh, based on Dale Street, beat off tough competition from around the country to win the title, as well as being shortlisted for Outstanding Individual of the Year, Best New Practice and Best Marketing. Held at The Intercontinental Hotel in London, the ceremony saw some of the biggest names in the industry come together to compete in some of the 13 categories.

THE red carpet was rolled out for the premier of ‘Fifteen Minutes That Shook the World’ at The Odeon cinema at Liverpool ONE last month. ‘Fifteen Minutes That Shook the World’ is a hilarious 45 minute spoof movie written by the acclaimed playwright, Dave Kirby (Brick Up the Mersey Tunnels, Lost Soul, Council Depot Blues). The all-star cast includes Pheonix Nights actor and Peep Show writer Neil Fitzmaurice playing manager Rafa Benitez with uncanny comic accuracy, as well as star appearances from Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann. ‘Fifteen Minutes That Shook the World’ is a film for every single reds fan and attempts to explain what may have happened at half time during the fateful match in Istanbul in May 2005, when Liverpool FC were 3-0 down in the Champions League Final against AC Milan. The fans deflated, the team seemingly defeated - traipse to the dressing room at the halftime whistle…only to reappear rejuvenated and inspired going on to produce football’s greatest ever comeback. This comedy masterpiece has already received huge support from James Bond’s Daniel Craig, fellow actors Clive Owen and Stephen Graham as well as more unusual fans such as renowned Manchester City fan, Noel Gallagher. The film centres on a news reporter’s investigation into the experiences and inspiration behind the legendary three goal comeback. Andrew Schofield (Scully) plays the roving reporter who visits Liverpool to talk to fans and players. ‘Fifteen Minutes That Shook the World’ is produced by newly formed Liverpool company, Miracle Productions, which was set up by city businessman Paul Flanagan and Dave Kirby. Backed by Reds star Jamie Carragher, a share of profits from the film will go to his new young people’s charity, The 23 Foundation. Following the screening, the actors, directors, footballers and WAGs enjoyed a red carpet evening at Cafe Sports Express.

MAKE-UP MASTERCLASS

1. Start with white shadow on the entire lid. 2. Choose a medium, smokey colour for the lower lid. Apply it three-quarters of the way up. 3. Continue to layer the colour to make it darker. Add a deeper colour on top and in the crease to intensify the look.

THE MANE ATTRACTION

SMOKEY eyes are a classic evening make-up look that’s fabulous for festive parties. But let’s face it, achieving the smouldering and sexy style we aspire to is no mean feat, with most of us ending up looking more like a panda than resembling a glossy magazine model. So, if like me you find your make-up skills somewhat lacking when it comes to creating the perfect smokey eyes, here’s a fool-proof step-by-step guide from those talented folk at Bobbi Brown:

Katie McLoughlin enjoys a Christmas hair makeover at Bobbers, Allerton Road

8. Line underneath the eye beginning at the outside corner, moving toward the inner corner. 9. Line as close to the lashes as possible. 10. Soften the line using a clean finger or Q-tip. 11. To give the pencil line staying power, use a liner brush to sweep a layer of shadow over the pencil.

tresses Beverley recommends a Paul Mitchell spa experience treatment, which includes a shampoo, condition and intensive treatment from a selection of three beautiful Paul Mitchell products. I opt for the tea tree intensive treatment, which creates a refreshing tingling sensation across my scalp and features natural extracts to restore radiance. All clients having a colour at Bobbers receive a complimentary hand massage, so whilst I relax on the massaging chair and the intensive tea tree treatment works its magic, my hands are treated to a massage with a gorgeous and deeply aromatic lemon sage body lotion. With my hair now a rich and lustrous chocolate shade, Beverley adds some body to the crown, tidies up my layers and adds a sweeping side fringe to frame my face. To complete the style and give it a glamorous edge for the Christmas party season, Beverley adds volume to the roots, expertly blow dries soft curls into the lengths and pins back a section from one side. I’m delighted with the end result and with the salon having a colour sale in January, I’m sure I’ll be back in the New Year.

4. Concentrate on the crease. Continue to layer the shadow deeply enough to create a dramatic effect. 5. Use your fingers to soften the shadow. 6. Now begin to line the eyes. I’VE always craved Rapunzel-like tresses, but, despite not gracing a hairdresser’s chair for nearly a year and taking no less than three different herbal hair supplements, my stubbornly shoulder-length locks have grown just two measly inches. With my tired tresses now ravaged by daily use of my beloved GHDs it seems unlikely that I’ll achieve a bouncy brunette Barnet a la Cheryl Cole in time for Christmas. So with the festive party season rapidly approaching, my decidedly dull hair is in desperate need of professional attention. Booking myself into Bobbers, Allerton Road, salon manager, Beverley Rosser, who has been with the company for 10 years, recommends a semi-permanent Paul Mitchell colour, that will give a high gloss finish. Using the salon’s innovative Paul Mitchell ‘Color Bar’ - which is designed to bring a little theatre to the salon and showcase the art of creating a customised colour - Beverley expertly mixes a rich chocolate liquorice shade that’s tailor-made for my skin tone and hair type. With a beeswax base, the colour is designed to condition and add shine. Once my colour has developed, to nourish my

BETTER SWEATERS Forget saving the knitwear for grandad this Christmas says Sarah Hooley HRISTMAS just isn't Christmas without someone buying you a novelty jumper, and while they might normally be stuffed straight in the back of the wardrobe never to see daylight again - this year your dear old aunty will for once have got it right! A huge trend on the autumn/winter catwalks, the fashion-world's love affair with chunky, retro knitwear is sweeping the nation and with the likes of David Beckham and Daniel Craig already spotted sporting some fetching knitwear it's only a matter of time before you'll be hooked. From thick cable knit wool jumpers to snowflake-patterned cardigans with big toggle-fastenings, this year's fine selection of woolly-wonders has more than a whiff of 1970s James Bond ski-scene about it. And within seconds of slipping one on

C

you can't help but picture yourself lounging around a Swiss chalet, glass of whiskey in hand or heading out to chop firewood to show off your manly prowess. Team with jeans and canvas trainers for a casual look during the day or smarten up with a pair of lace-up military boots to impress come night fall. And while it was barely a few years ago that most men would have been disowned for even thinking about wearing a cardigan, they're now a staple part of any winter wardrobe and are an integral part of the retro look. They also makes a nifty alternative to cumbersome jackets on warmer winter days and thanks to their versatility will see you through to the spring. So this winter make sure you wrap up warm - as the great outdoors has never looked so good.

out to work on other projects in 2004 while Tash gave birth to her second child Harry. Tash returned to the limelight in 2006 when she took part in the BBC 1 singing show Just The Two Of Us. She has also appeared alongside Paul O'Grady on Most Haunted and took part in Come Dine with Me which saw game show host Roy Walker and ex-Corrie actor, Bruce Jones, fighting for her affections. “It was a great laugh but I felt quite rough having to socialise four nights in a row,” she laughs. “I had to practice my dishes a few times before going on the show. My family were sick of them!

Flying high Michelle Rushton gets all emotional with singer and Peter Pan star, Natasha Hamilton IVERPOOL sweetheart Natasha Hamilton is on a real high. Her career is soaring - literally! As not only is she launching a brand new solo album, she is also starring as flying boy Peter Pan in the Liverpool Empire’s panto this Christmas. And as well as celebrating her career taking off, Atomic Kitten songstress, known as Tash, is also expecting the patter of tiny paws, sorry - feet, next summer! So plenty to celebrate in the Hamilton household, but first she has the small matter of learning her lines. “I am good at learning lyrics to songs but not sure about learning a script,” she giggles nervously. “I’ve roped in my husband Riad to help me,” adds the 27-year-old who admits she hasn’t done much acting since she was back in school at the age of 15. “I did a cameo role in Home and Away

years ago, but Riad says I’m a good actress!” She says tongue-in-cheek. “I am terrified as it’s my first panto but really looking forward to it and am putting 110% into it. “We started rehearsing at the end of November. We just sat in a circle and read through the script. I was really looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast, especially Henry Winkler who played the Fonz in Happy Days who is playing the part of Captain Hook. “And fellow Scouser, comedian Les Dennis is playing the dame - he’s hilarious!” Tash plays the part of Peter Pan, the boy who can fly. “My sons are very excited as he is their favourite character,” says the stunning redhead. “My four-year-old, Harry, has a mural of Peter Pan on his wall but instead of flying over Neverland, he is flying over Liverpool!

“But they can’t get their heads round the fact I am a girl playing a boy and I had to explain it’s an old panto tradition!” Tash is particularly looking forward to a spot of swashbuckling. “I am a real tom boy so I’m looking forward to learning how to sword fight. They’re getting the experts in to teach me. I can’t wait. I’ll be walking round like Zorro!” Tash is confident that she will be able to cope with the demands of performing 12 shows a week. “I toured with Atomic Kitten whilst pregnant with my first son Josh so I’m sure I’ll be fine,” she beams. It was with Atomic Kitten that Tash caught the public’s attention in 2000 when their hit single ‘Whole Again’ went to number one in 19 countries around the world. “I am a real tom boy so I’m looking forward to learning how to sword fight. They’re getting the experts in to teach me. I can’t wait. I’ll be walking round like Zorro!” “I was a bit disappointed not to win, purely because I wanted to raise money for my chosen charity, World Vision.” Indeed, Tash does quite a lot of charity work. Last year, she raised £10,000 for Marie Curie by winning All Star Family Fortunes and she won £30,000 for Cancer Research UK when she and Riad took part in All Star Mr & Mrs. She has been the face of numerous brands, including Tommy’s baby charity and Tesco's babysafe campaign. She is also an ambassador for The Outward Bound Trust, a committed campaigner against knife crime and performed at the White Ribbon ball which raises awareness of violence against women. Plus she has tried her hand at presenting at the MTV Music Awards 08 and will be presenting the Juice FM Liverpool Style Awards at the Hilton this month. And next spring/summer she will be releasing her first solo single from her debut album, a project which is really close to her heart. Natasha has been recording the album in New York, working with the producers behind Nelly Furtado and Fergie. “My first single is called Miss Emotional. It’s about myself and how I’m lead by my heart. I’m hoping it will

NOVEMBER 09 strike a chord with a lot of women. It’s a real girlie anthem - all about having pent up emotion, having a good cry, picking yourself up, being strong and carrying on. “I wrote the lyrics and starting humming melodies and taping them on my Dictaphone, then I spent time jamming with Toby Gadd who has worked with Beyonce, and Alecia Keys in a New York studio. We bounced off each other and he came up with some wicked melodies. “I think the best songs come from raw emotion. This song really came from the heart and I hope people will take it to their hearts too. “When I come to sing it live I will have to learn to detach my emotions or else I’ll be sobbing every time I sing it!” Tash also still performs with Atomic Kitten all over the world. “I’m still in touch with the girls, we did a gig in Hong Kong for Nokia and at a private party in Russia. I recorded a track with Liz for Help for Heroes recently and texted her the other day to congratulate her on War of the Worlds which she’s starring in with Jason Donovan.” And she has a number of other projects in the pipeline and is considering taking part in a musical touring the UK, although she doesn’t like to stray too far from home.

“My children are settled in school here and I like to be close to my family. When I was 16, I was touring the world with Atomic Kitten but when I came home my family would tell me to wash the dishes. They kept my feet firmly on the ground. “You need the stability of family in this industry and it’s important to always remember where you come from.” A true Scouser, originally from Kensington, Tash says Liverpool is the “most stylish city in the world” and her favourite place to eat out is the Restaurant Bar and Grill: “Their cocktails are amazing,” she gushes. “I’m looking forward to trying out the new San Carlo this weekend - I’m hoping the hubby will take me!” As for Christmas, Tash is looking forward to chilling at home in between pantos and will be putting her newfound culinary skills to good use. “We were going to eat out but after Come Dine With Me I have decided to stay home and cook - I’ll be taking a trip to ‘Marksies’ to stock up!”

BRIGHT SPARKS OMD's Andy McCluskey talks about the band's electrifying new DVD WITH the name Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, it was inevitable that the 80s synth pioneers would eventually get the urge to go classical. The Merseyside band, renowned for their electronic style melodies and hits such as Enola Gray and Joan of Arc, recently joined forces with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Last month, they released a DVD entitled OMD with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra which captures the band performing their back catalogue of hits, backed by the rich resonance of the city’s world-famous 75-piece orchestra. They also premiered The Energy Suite, an audio-visual collaboration with artist Peter Saville and filmmaker Hambi featuring amazing images of power stations in the North West. The DVD was filmed in the opulent and historic setting of Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall and marks the realisation of a 30-year dream come true for the band who re-formed in 2006. We caught up with band member Andy McCluskey who explains: “It all started with a series of mad ideas in the 80s. “Growing up on the Wirral peninsula, myself and Paul Humphreys were fascinated by industrial architecture. Driving past Stanlow Oil Refinery at night when it was all lit up - we thought it had a certain beauty a raw elegance. “When we reformed, we recorded ‘Stanlow’ which featured sounds from the oil refinery.” This love for industrial architecture was shared by

iconic artist and designer Peter Saville, who they had met years earlier when he designed the cover for OMD’s track ‘Electricity.’ Decades later and earlier this year, Andy, Peter and Hambi created The Energy Suite for an exhibition at Liverpool new media gallery FACT in 2008.

an orchestra playing our work alongside our projections of the power stations. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with The Phil. “The DVD is really a document of a fantastic evening capturing the spirit of the band, orchestra and imagery.” Andy admits that, at one

The installation features striking and often haunting imagery of five power generating sites in the North West based in an arc around the Irish Sea. Andy, wrote the music with help from Stuart Kershaw to further illustrate the powerful images of the stations and the piece was edited at FACT. Then they decided that the perfect accompaniment to the piece would be an orchestra. He explains: “A few years ago we worked with an orchestra in Europe and had songs rearranged classically. “We then felt we wanted to go one step further and have our songs played solely by an orchestra. “After working on the installation at FACT, we thought it would be interesting to have

time, he and Paul might have felt a little intimidated at the prospect of working with an orchestra. He says: “Neither of us can read or write music, we are self taught, but we broke the ice when we performed with an orchestra and choir in Hamburg and we are a bit more confident these days.” OMD was born in the late 70s when Andy and Paul discovered they had a shared interest in German electronic music, such as Kraftwerk. “All out mates thought we were weird!” Andy laughs. “We plucked up the courage to ask the people at Eric’s Club if we could play there. Eric's was where all the cool bands played. “My generation of musicians all started at Eric's - such as Teardrop Explodes, Echo & the

Bunnymen, Frankie Goes to Hollywood - it was a real hive of activity. “Luckily for us, people liked us and it took off.” OMD took time out in the late 90s with Andy concentrating on music management and production at his studio on Lark Lane with bands such as Atomic Kitten. The group reformed a few years later for a Night of the Proms and the crowds loved it so much that it spurred Andy and Paul back into action with a European tour. They worked with an orchestra again for a charity event in aid of UNICEF in Brussels before their recent collaboration with The Philharmonic. This does leave one to wonder, what will they do next? “We’re currently touring Europe, performing with a Belgian orchestra. We’re in Antwerp, then off to Arnhem and Rotterdam, then we are joining up with Simple Minds for a tour of 13 concerts.” A new CD release is also planned for 2010. Watch this space. In the meantime, you can get hold of the DVD via the FACT website: http://shop.fact.co.uk We have two signed copies to give away to two lucky readers along with two tickets to the private screening at FACT on Saturday, December 14. ONES TO WATCH David Bedford WRITING a book on The Beatles was just what the doctor ordered for David Bedford literally! When the father of three from Penny Lane was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, his GP advised him to keep his mind active. David was mad about music and The Beatles, so he started writing for the British Beatles fan club magazine then decided to pen his own book. “It’s been a hard day’s decade” says David who took nearly 10 years to gather all his information for Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles. But the result is the most comprehensive

book about The Beatles and Liverpool ever written, detailing their lives from birth until Beatlemania took them away from Liverpool, separating fact from fiction. “To understand The Beatles, you have to understand Liverpool,” says the author. His work has been described as “The best Beatles book I have seen in 20 years”, by Bill Heckle, director of Cavern City Tours and organiser of the annual Beatles Week Festival, Liverpool. The foreword to “Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles” has been written by former Beatles drummer Pete Best, and there are 800 images, plus guide maps and details of every area of Merseyside and their Beatles connection. THE WRITE STUFF Bev Dulson unveils her first book, Betrayal BEV Dulson is only happy when she’s got a pen in her hand. And after years of scribbling short stories on scraps of paper, she’s finally self-published her first book. Betrayal is a romantic thriller set in New York. It centres around the main character, Summer who is trying to find out which of her friends is responsible for the death of her cousin, Marcus. Bev, who works in advertising, gives us a glimpse into the book’s intricate plot: “Marcus wasn't a nice guy and it seems everyone has a motive. Finding out the killer is only half of the story...once the truth is revealed it sets off a whole chain of events that will change Summer's life forever.” Seeing her work in print is a dream come true for Bev who has been working on the book since her teens. She explains: “The initial idea popped into my head when I was about 15 - and I just kept working on it until I was brave

Now 29-year-old Bev has been bitten by the writing bug, she is eager to get cracking on her next book. “The next one, Love Overboard, is a different style,” says Bev. “It's more fun and more chick lit than Betrayal - it's about two travel agents Lucie and Zo who go on a working cruise around the Caribbean. Lucie has a whirlwind romance with one of the officers, Nick, and five years later he comes home to find her, but she's moved on. “I haven't worked out the ending but I'm not too concerned, the characters will let me know what's best for them! I also write while I'm listening to music, I can't write if it's quiet!” As for other wannabe authors, Bev has a word of advice: “Just do it! You always regret more what you didn't do than what you did, there are so many on-line writers groups to give you support and get you started.” Betrayal is available on the internet via Amazon, and Linghams, the independent bookshop in Heswall.

DANCE DIVA Michelle Rushton meets high-octane vocalist, Nikki Belle 2009 has been the best year yet for dance diva Nikki Belle. She and her Cahill bandmates Anton Powers, Tim Condran and Scott Rosser released their second single ‘Sex Shooter’ which was a massive club number one and number one in Russia. She’s also had three solo club chart number ones and given birth to her first baby boy, George, just six weeks old! “He’s gorgeous,” gushes Nikki. “My little ray of sunshine.” Just four days after the birth, Nikki was back on stage performing “I was still on a high after having him!” She laughs. The new mum also modelled Debenhams’ new collection and performed Cahill’s new single at the Girls Night In celebrity fashion show at The Hilton last week in aid of The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation. Most new mums find it hard to get dressed in a morning, never mind model slinky cockail dresses and perform but it’s just typical of Nikki with her hi-energy, infectious personality. Her adrenaline fuelled live performances have made her one of the most popular clubland singers here and in her second home in Ibiza. “I get a real buzz out of clubbing, I just love jumping around and getting the crowd going,” she says. Nikki originally found global chart success as one half of 'Hot & Juicy', (the voice behind the smash hit single 'Horny.' Birmingham-born Nikki moved to Liverpool in 2001 when she signed to Atomic Kitten’s management company, Integral.

She toured the globe with her own band, with The Australian Pink Floyd and backed Atomic Kitten. Developing her solo material, Nikki had her first club hit in 2004 with ‘Music is My Life’ and stormed the club charts in 2007 with Womack and Womack classic “Teardrops.” ‘Sunset to Sunrise’ saw Nikki become a huge hit as resident at Garlands in Ibiza and in Liverpool throughout 2007. The next 12 months promise to propel Nikki even more into the mainstream with her band Cahill, named after the Everton midfielder, Tim Cahill. “My bandmate, Anton Powers, is a big Evertonian!” explained Nikki. Cahill are close to completing their debut album due out on 3 Beat Blue/All Around the World in 2010. “We’re launching our new single ‘Don’t Stop’ in the new year. It’s a fantastic dance track - very ‘now,” says Nikki.

Setting the Scene

Paul Baker sheds light on how to turn your dining table into a festive feast for the eyes

SETTING the Christmas table really sets the scene in preparation for the fabulous feast to come! With Christmas dinner being the main event everyone looks forward to (after opening all their prezzies) on the big day, it’s worth pulling out all the stops to make sure your dinner table dazzles with

seasonal sparkle. And that means more than just leaving a novelty cracker next to every plate. So polish those crystal wine glasses, get your best China out of storage and check out our pick of the products that will transform your dining table this Christmas.

FESTIVE FOLIAGE Paul Baker spruces up his home with some traditional Yuletide greenery BRIGHTEN up your home this Christmas with some festive foliage. The poinsettia, with its eye-catching red bracts, is a plant that has come to symbolise Christmas. It’s very traditional and is still the most popular plant bought for the home at Christmas. Colin Pascoe from Gateacre Garden Centre offers the following advice: “Poinsettias left outside for even a moment on a cold day will almost certainly get chilled and drop their leaves, so correct handling is essential. Keep poinsettias in a warm, bright place away from chills and draughts and water well, but always remember to let the compost dry out before watering again.” If you want to break with the old traditions there are alternatives you can opt for. “Orchids, cyclamens and azaleas can provide an alternative splash of colour around your home,” explains Colin. “Outside, evergreen shrubs can bring some festive cheer. Other than the traditional holly and ivy there are lots of other plants that will brighten up your garden. “Plants like the attractive, skimmia rubella are popular as they are so versatile. This easy to grow evergreen is ideal for pots and containers, producing deep red flower plumes over the winter period opening into strongly

scented cream flowers in spring. Sarcococca confusa, ‘sweet or winter box’ is another attractive compact evergreen producing lovely scented flowers in winter.” The most common way of bringing the outside in at this time of year is with the traditional Christmas tree. Choosing your fresh Christmas tree really does mark the start of the festivities and is an exciting occasion for all the family. When choosing your tree, bear in mind the size and shape of the tree, relative to the room you’re putting it in. The traditional Norway spruce is popular for its strong fragrance. Nordmann firs have superior needle-holding qualities while Fraser firs offer a slim, dense tree with a good colour. For more advice on plants and gifts for Christmas, visit www.gateacregardencentre.co.uk

TREE TIPS Keep your tree fresh throughout Christmas by following Colin’s top tips: 1) When you get your tree home, cut one inch from the bottom of the stem and stand it in a bucket of water until you are ready to bring it inside 2) It can be helpful to leave the net on your tree to make it easier to handle 3) Place your tree into a stand and top up with water 4) Make sure your tree is not too near a hot radiator or fire 5) Top up with water every day

W

expect from a traditional Christmas pudding but at the same time, something with a bit more ‘oomph.’ Head chef at The Stables in Garston, Rob Pritchett, has come up the perfect alternative - bread and butter pudding. Rob certainly knows his onions (pardon the pun) when it comes to cooking, having

Mulled wine Nigel Paul Smith from Maritime Dining Rooms gets hot under the collar at the prospect of a nice cup of mulled wine at Christmas. He says: “Mulled wine, to me, always indicates one of the first signs that Christmas is here. It is a great family drink before or after a meal. It goes down a treat as it is full of warm layers of flavour. It should be rich but spicy with a velvety texture and silky smooth on the palate.” Here’s Nigel’s favourite recipe for mulled wine:

Bread and butter pudding Ingredients 7 slices of bread Soft butter 1 pint milk 1/2 pint double cream 110g sugar 110g raisins and sultanas 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp cinnamon Pinch salt Method 1) Pre-heat oven to 170°C, 325°F or Gas 3. 2) Butter a large ovenproof

baking dish. 3) Spread the butter generously on one side of each slice of bread. 4) Line bottom and sides of the dish with buttered bread. 5) Mix the milk, eggs, sugar, raisins and sultanas, vanilla, cinnamon and salt, and pour over bread. Place a few extra pieces of buttered bread on top, press down to submerge. 6) Allow to stand for at least 30 minutes. This lets the bread soak up some of the liquid. 7) Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. 8) Remove the lid and cook for a further 30 minutes until top becomes brown.

The right stuff(ing!) One of the secrets to serving the perfect turkey dinner is having the right stuffing. The restaurant still has some great features with the original vault where the food is now prepared and there are still two original safes. Northern exposure Emma Thompson ventures north to find the perfect Christmas gift WE all love a good mooch around the city centre shops, but sometimes the hassle is just too much. The price of parking, queues in Primark long enough to make you think they're giving the clothes away and, of course, the excess of folk trundling around with bulging bags (especially at Christmas) knocking you over. So it may be worth venturing out of town, where things are a little less hectic, to the likes of Bootle or Walton, Aintree and Maghull. Bootle may not be the first place that springs to mind when looking for that perfect gift, but you'll be surprised. The Strand shopping centre boasts a whole host of high street stores with a multistorey carpark on the side which is just a fraction of the city prices. Whether you're after the latest games console, fine jewels for all ages or the sweet smelling scent of the season packaged in a fancy gift-set there's plenty to tick off your 'gift list'. The surrounding streets such as Stanley Road and Marsh Lane are host to a wide selection of independent retailers too. So if you're after something a little different, with everything from clothing and shoe shops to carpet stores, florists, bike shops and even car parts, there's plenty to choose from. Not to mention a great

variety of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. Walton also offers a vast array of independent shops nestled amongst the historic gems such as Walton Library which was opened in 1911 and boasts a beautiful domed ceiling whilst also now providing the latest technology with free public internet access. Close by is Walton Hall Park which dates back many years although was officially opened in 1934 when King George V opened the 130-acre park to the public, on the same day as he opened the Mersey Tunnel. Leading from County Road, down through Rice Lane and on to Walton Vale the area oozes shops galore all specialising in their chosen field, whether it's pets and accessories, computer repair, bridal wear, women's clothing, DIY stores, hair and beauty salons, along with well established butchers and greengrocers. Not forgetting the continuing shops over the bridge in Orrell Park. Further along takes you towards Aintree, heading right is local trader, Taskers situated down Long Lane offering a great selection of homeware and now a fabulous variety of Christmas accessories. Towards Aintree Racecouse along Warbreck Moor you

come along another collection of stores as well as Parkers cafe and Lux Garden Chinese Restaurant making sure you can satisfy your appetite day and night. Aintree Retail Park brings together the area’s main retailers, so if you're after something specific then you may be able to find it here amongst these high street stores. Along Ormskirk Road and on to Northway towards Maghull, the area is dotted with clusters of shops, salons and restaurants including Maghull Square, Deyes Lane and the Sefton Meadows Centre. The Leeds-Liverpool canal runs through the centre of Maghull, giving you a relaxing place to stroll, although maybe not so much in the harsh winter weather! And one of Maghull's most famous residents was Frank Hornby who invented Dinky Cars, Hornby Trains and Meccano. So check out your surroundings and you'll discover plenty on your doorstep!

WE all gear up for Christmas Day but there can often be a bit of a lull in between the big day and New Year's Eve. As tempting as it is to slob on the couch, watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and scoffing endless tins of Quality Street, why not make the most of the Christmas break to discover our city anew? Here's a few ideas to get you out and about over the festive period. A popular recent trend in Liverpool at Christmas time is its ice rink, bringing the more magical parts of the season alive with ice skating for all the family. The City Central Ice Experience runs right up until January 10 (it is closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). The unique under-cover real ice rink is in Williamson Square and appears courtesy of City Central, in association with Radio City and Merseytravel. It costs just £5 per person (including skate hire) for 50 minutes and tickets are available at the ice rink and from Merseytravel Centres and 08 Place on Whitechapel.

Afterwards take a ride on the traditional carousel and treat yourself to festive goodies at one of the Alpine log cabins. See the city differently by taking a ride on the Liverpool ONE Wheel. This big wheel takes rises 80m above Chavasse Park! The 40-gondola wheel rotates three times allowing plenty of time for you to sit back, relax and enjoy the views. The Wheel is in town until the end of January 2010 and is open Sunday to Thursday, 10am-10pm, Friday and Saturday, 10am-11pm. Tickets are £6 per adult and £4 per child. Concessions are £5 and children under three years ride free. Book tickets at www.liverpoolonewheel.co.uk/ or pay at the kiosk at Chavasse Park. At such a spiritual time of year, why not visit our two Cathedrals over Christmas time? The Metropolitan Roman Catholic Cathedral is a great place to explore. Don't miss the atmospheric crypt, while the piazza and shop offer a great place to relax

providing refreshments, gifts and historical information at your fingertips. Liverpool's Anglican cathedral re-opens after Christmas on Monday, December 28, when you can visit The Labyrinth 10am4pm. Reshaping a 12th Century ritual, this interactive spiritual journey is a great way to prepare for 2010. It runs until Saturday, January 2, 2010. It is suitable for all ages and entrance is free. The Cathedral is closed on New Year’s Day. The history buffs among you might fancy heading to St George’s Hall, during the Christmas and New Year period to see the Gladstone Exhibition. December 29, 2009, marks the 200th birthday of one of Liverpool’s greatest sons, William Gladstone, and to celebrate St George’s Hall is putting on a unique exhibition giving a detailed insight into the life and achievements of the four times Prime Minister. The exhibition runs from December 29, 2009, until March 7, 2010 and entrance is free.

FAB FOUR TOUR exploring the music of the Beatles. The White Feather exhibition gives a unique and emotive insight into life with John Lennon, through the memories of his first wife Cynthia and eldest son Julian. Both are located in the new £10.5m Mersey Ferries terminal building at Liverpool’s Pier Head, a short walk from The Beatles Story. The Beatles Story, Britannia Vaults, Albert Dock, L3 4AD, tel: 0151 709 1963. Re-opens after Christmas, December 27-31, 10am - 6pm. Open New Year’s Day - 11am - 6pm.

Paul Baker takes a look round The Beatles Story HOUSED in (or rather underneath) the impressive site of Liverpool’s famous Albert Dock complex, The Beatles’ Story takes you on a Fab Four tour you’ll not forget. On a cold winter’s day it’s nice to be able to escape the chill and spend an hour or so enjoying the history and legacy of John, Paul, George and Ringo. No matter how much you know about the city’s most famous sons, there’s so much information and assorted memorabilia inside that even the most learned of Beatle maniacs will come away wiser. That said, complete newbies to the Beatles’ sound will similarly be entranced. The helpful headset guide talks you through the many artifacts of the Fab Four’s past, narrated by John Lennon’s sister, Julia. The exhibition moves nicely through The Quarrymen’s skiffle days to the early Beatles gigs in Hamburg and Liverpool. Probably the best aspect of The Beatles Story is its recreation of the Merseybeat scene.

From a recreation of famed Liverpool music shop Hessy’s, to the dank cobbles of Mathew Street and then on into a mock-up of The Cavern itself, you really feel like you’re stepping back in time into the world of The Beatles. It also serves as a brilliant piece of reminiscence for those of us who can remember those halcyon days. Also included in the admission price and well worth a visit are the White Feather exhibition and Fab4D. The latter uses the latest 3D technology and 4D special effects to immerse visitors in a virtual world

HOW TO GET THERE Take the C2 City Centre Circular bus route which stops at the Albert Dock, or the nearest train station is James Street. For more details call Traveline on 0871 200 2233 or visit www.merseytravel.gov.uk
