20 JANUARY DEALS
Editor’s Letter HAPPY new year! I hope you all had a good Christmas and are looking forward to a healthy, happy and prosperous 2011. We at Best of Liverpool are a little partied out, and feeling the effects of over indulgence having dived into mountains of mince pies and vats of sherry. But we are determined to start this year, revitalised and full of vigour and optimism for the year ahead. In our first issue this year, we bring you lots of inspirational ideas of new things to try – from exotic cookery to comedy – why not add another string to your bow? And if, like us, you have scoffed your own body weight in Quality Street, and are feeling the need to shed a few pounds, we bring you the latest equipment for your quest to keep fit, as well as some snazzy sportswear, including the footballers’ favourite, the snood! For the ladies, we pay homage to the 70s with some groovy gear, from funky flares to bow blouses. And for the little ones, we find some snuggly nightwear to make sure they are cosy and cute at the same time! We seek advice from the experts on how to avoid the
winter blues and boost our immune systems which have taken a battering in all this bad weather. Plus, if you’re feeling the cold, we have some wholesome recipes to help warm your cockles, as well as a round up of some great discounts so you can enjoy a little bite to eat whilst hitting the January sales. If you’re in an arty mood, we have some great ideas of how to brighten up your home without breaking the bank. Although it’s tempting to hibernate under the duvet during this cold snap, we have a fabulous line-up of things to do this month, from exploring Crosby and Waterloo to heading a little further afield to visit the city of Brussels. And, as always we celebrate the wealth of talent this city has to offer, catching up with Corrie newcomer, Andrew Lancel and psychic Derek Acorah who shares his predictions for the year ahead with us. Happy new year!

JANUARY 11 THE HOME QUARTER
LFC RESTAURANT LAUNCH STARS from the worlds of showbiz and sport rubbed shoulders with the city’s business leaders when Liverpool Football Club launched its new restaurant with a VIP party in December. Club legends mingled with stars from Hollyoaks and the new BBC1 Colin McKeown-produced drama, Justice, at a champagne reception and post-match party at the launch of The Boot Room. Guests were treated to a pre-match Champagne reception in The Boot Room, followed by a sumptuous three-course meal with insights from LFC Legend Jimmy Case & Darren Farley, ‘the voice of football’, before taking their seats to watch Liverpool FC V FC Utrecht in the UEFA Europa League. After the game, guests returned to The Boot Room to enjoy entertainment including music from special guests James Walsh (Starsailor) and laid back tunes provided by Liverpool’s finest DJ – Yousef.
AWARD-WINNING Liverpool ONE retail and leisure complex recently welcomed design and furniture store, The Home Quarter, on board. The Home Quarter, located on Hanover Street, is the third largest retail unit in Liverpool ONE behind John Lewis and Debenhams, occupying 45,000 sq ft of premium retail space. It is home to a number of leading design-led brands, encompassing different designs and styles including Natuzzi, Roche Bobois, BoConcept, Calligaris Content by Conran and Feather & Black, many of which are firsts for the Liverpool market. The Home Quarter is positioning itself as the must-visit destination for those who are passionate about their home and the furnishings.
City talk Michelle Rushton brings you some hot gossip despite the icy temperatures FESTIVE FUN STYLISH Gusto Restaurant and Bar at the Albert Dock was packed to the rafters with over 150 people dressed in their festive finery to support the annual Carolyn Hughes PR Charity Christmas Lunch. The afternoon, to raise money for Wirral Witches, was superbly hosted by Radio City’s Simon Ross, with six piece band De Ja Vu getting everyone into the party spirit. A surprise visit from Father Christmas (aka Andrew Hodson) who posed for pictures in his own Gusto Grotto was a great hit. The event ensured that the guests’ party season kicked off with a bang!

THE Prince’s Trust Diamond Ball once again proved to be the highlight of the Christmas social calendar in Liverpool, this year featuring a glittering performance from MOBO awardwinner Jamelia. The event raised £30,000 for The Trust – funds which will help some 5,000 young people across the North West get into work or training next year. Guest Jill Hession was the lucky winner of a £10,000 diamond, kindly donated by key sponsor David M Robinson. Jamelia, who is an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust, was presented with a Picasso dove pendant gift from David M Robinson and also performed in diamonds loaned to the star by the upmarket retailer. Commenting on the evening Jamelia said: “The work of The Prince’s Trust is invaluable for thousands of young people across the country and I’m delighted to be able to help.”

POP star Natasha Hamilton made a surprise visit to a lucky Liverpool resident, to learn how a very special Barnardo’s-run initiative is giving young people in Merseyside a chance to work. Jason Ryan, aged 20, is one of the first people to take part in two new Barnardo’s courses, as part of its 'A Chance to Work' service. Open to 16-25 year olds with moderate learning disabilities, the fast-track courses give them the skills, confidence and work experience they need to increase their employability, and lead to nationally-
recognised qualifications. Natasha Hamilton dropped in to see Jason as he completed his work placement, at Beechley Riding Stables in Allerton, and presented him with a certificate. Natasha said: “It was an inspiration to meet Jason and see him with the horses, I just know he’ll go on to do great things!” Barnardo’s is now accepting applications for the second course starting in early 2011. For more information contact Judith Howard at Barnardo’s on tel: 0151 729 0128.
GIRLS Aloud star Nicola Roberts recently gave her backing to rising Runcorn band CANDIDATE23 as they launched their debut single on the charts in Liverpool. Nicola joined a packed house at Liverpool’s cabaret-bar restaurant Blundell Street to give the lads a rousing send-off at their launch party. Dressed casually in jeans and boots, she watched the five-piece indie rock outfit officially release their single One For You, which was launched on the internet at the same time. CANDIDATE23 were runners up in this year’s Halton’s Got Talent – the borough’s answer to Britain’s Got Talent – where they performed under the name Soundproof. But despite not finishing in the top spot, they impressed one of the judges – Paul Chadd – who signed them up to his management company.

IF you’re looking for a key trend that’ll see you through this season and next, 70s is it. Camel coats, floppy hats, platforms and wide leg trousers were in all the most covetable closets this winter. And, as the new spring collections start to arrive in stores, the decade of disco, David Bowie and Saturday Night Fever has once again captured the imagination of designers. At Stella McCartney’s spring show, models took to the runway in 70s-inspired silk blouses, high-waisted A-line denim skirts, suede jackets and tailored pieces in milky shades. Meanwhile at Marc Jacobs’ spring/summer show, models sported disco fever hair and make-up. The decade features heavily on the high street too, with plenty of high-waisted tailored trousers, A-line suede skirts, pussy-bow blouses, skinny belts, crochet waistcoats, lurex knits, floaty 70s-style dresses, maxi dresses, natural tan leather bags and jumpsuits in the new collections. So for an on-trend look that’ll see you through this season and next, here’s our pick of key 70s pieces to watch out for this January... Navy 70s style shiny high waisted shorts, £26, from Topshop

Hair today, gone in a flash ANYTHING with the word ‘laser’ in the title sets off alarm bells for me, so I was a little apprehensive at the thought of lasers zapping my delicate underarm area. But I needn’t have worried, as there wasn’t a light saber in sight! Instead, Epilight Clinic on Rodney Street was elegant and welcoming with beautiful chandeliers and plush sofas in the reception area. I decided to try the new painless laser hair removal system – Soprano XL – which utilises a revolutionary technology with gold standard 810 diode laser system. Checking on what preparation I needed – I hate leaving hair to grow for waxing – I was pleased to discover you could simply shave the night before — no problem. When I arrived I was surprised to find a busy waiting room with relaxed people of all ages waiting for their treatments — maybe it wouldn’t be so painful after all. After filling in my medical form, owner Lyn Cunningham showed me to the treatment room and explained the procedure and what it involved, as well as ensuring me all the staff are experts and fully qualified! She explained how hair removal treatment can be life changing for some people, especially men who have a lot of hair, or women with polycystic ovary syndrome which can cause unwanted
facial or body hair. Like all hair removal lasers, the new Soprano XL only kills anagen hairs (hairs that are attached to your blood stream), and only about one in three hairs are attached at one time. So that’s why it takes around 6-8 sessions to give you permanent hair reduction. Finally, it was time to take the plunge, and I hopped on the bed – as I’d worn a vest top there was no need to undress or take my jewellery off. Lyn gave me some dark glasses to wear and then it was time to begin the treatment. She applied a cold gel then began the laser – which really was pain free for me! She ran the laser over my skin in a continuous flow while checking I was okay and that it wasn’t painful. Obviously everyone’s different, but I experienced just a warm sensation, rather like a hot stone massage. To make sure I felt the benefit of the new laser in comparison to the old, Lyn decided it would be good to use the old machine on my other underarm. And you can really feel the difference. The old machine gave sharp twinges so the new Soprano XL laser was so much better, especially if you’re getting a large area treated. It was over in 10 minutes and didn't hurt or cause redness. It was a quick, pain-free treatment. I was amazed! Lyn explained it will take two weeks for

the existing follicles to fall out and that’s when I’ll see the difference as the follicles have been heated up so they can no longer produce new hair. After a few more treatments, I should be virtually hair-free in time to wear all those summer sleeveless tops and able to throw away my razors for good!
Where is it? Tucked away down the renowned Rodney Street off Hardman Street, and about a 10–15 minute walk from Central Station.
What does it do? Epilight specialises in a wide range of treatments from laser hair removal, photorejuvenation for redness, rosacea, broken capillaries, pigments and acne scaring, as well as tattoo removal, dermal fillers, Botox and Accent radio frequency for long lasting skin tightening, plus much more.

Michelle Rushton discovers her inner specs appeal
WEARY of wearing spectacles held together with Sellotape in the style of the late Jack Duckworth, I decided it was high time I invested in some new eyewear. After spotting an advert for Specsavers, I decided to give the new city centre branch a try. The opticians has recently moved to a more central location on Lord Street and boasts a fabulous new range of designer frames. Taking a seat, it wasn’t long before a polite clinical assistant called Abdul came over to take a few details about my eyes and general health. Then I was shown into the clinical assessment room where he took some initial readings to determine whether I was long or short sighted and check the pressure in my eyes. I was then introduced to Abbas, the optometrist, who gave my eyes a thorough health check. Abbas showed me the store’s new state-of-the-art equipment and explained how new technology has made eye testing so much easier and quicker, allowing him to spend more time getting to know the patients. I’m sure I’m not the only one who used to find the old eye tests a tad tedious. In fact, I used to put off visits to the opticians, only turning up every few years when my glasses were the worst for wear, when really, we are advised to get our eyes checked around once a year. Specsavers’ aim is not only to help people see more clearly but to give their eyes a really thorough health check. Abbas revealed how the new Nidek fundus camera features a specialised lowpower biomicroscope which takes photographs of the retina which can be
used to detect glaucoma, diabetes, agerelated macular degeneration and vascular occlusions. He gave my peepers a thorough going over, checking everything from the pupils, cornea, lids, lashes, to optic nerve and muscle balance. Abbas spotted that I have a condition called alternating exotropia, which means my eyes don’t focus together properly, as well as astigmatism which can affect my distance vision. I always knew there was something not quite right and have trouble focusing at times, especially when watching 3D films, so it was reassuring to have the condition diagnosed. Abbas advised that I need to wear my glasses for driving, watching TV and reading. The whole eye test was extremely quick, easy and painless and before long I was handed my prescription and introduced to Alison, a dispensing optician, who explained the different types of lenses available from anti reflection to reaction lenses, as well as the many special offers including buy one get one free. We decided on single vision lenses with anti reflection. The next stage was to choose the frames. The store boasts a dazzling array of frames which come in all colours, shapes and styles to suit all tastes and budgets. In-store frame advisors are on hand to explain how you need to consider your face shape, colouring and eye shade when choosing frames. Alison advised me to steer clear of dark and warm shades as I have cool skin tones. She said: “At the moment, square shaped frames are still popular with thick
patterned sides, in shades of black, brown and deep red.” Geek chic is also all the range when it comes to specs, made popular by the cast of Glee with their oversized, classic black rimmed frames. Specsavers has a great range of designer frames from the most fashionable names around including Jasper Conran, Red or Dead, Missoni, FCUK and the company’s exclusive Osiris range. After trying on lots of frames, we decided I needed to avoid styles which were too heavy and chunky. With the help from the store’s ‘Magic Mirror’ which takes
photos of you in the different styles allowing you to see what you look like from different angles, I decided to have a change from my usual brown shade and opted for some funky purple Missoni frames. Next, dispensing optician Sue measured my face to make sure my new glasses would be a perfect fit and in just three days they were ready for me to collect. My new specs have attracted lots of admiring comments and I love them so much, I don’t want to take them off ! To arrange an eye test visit Specsavers on Lord Street, call 0151 709 9180 or log on to www.specsavers.co.uk/liverpool
WIN TWO PAIRS OF GLASSES FROM SPECSAVERS
SPECSAVERS in Liverpool is giving away two pairs of designer glasses worth up to £125 each, plus an eye examination to ensure winners can transform their look for the new year (terms and conditions apply). The winner will receive a full eye examination, including a comprehensive health assessment from the store’s state-of-the-art fundus camera. With such a large range to choose from, the winners will have the help of in-store frame stylists to advise on colouring and frame styles to suit their face shapes. To be in with a chance of winning, send your answers on a postcard to the following question to Best of Liverpool, Commercial Editorial Unit, PO Box 48, Old Hall Street, Liverpool L69 3EB. Optimise your life in 2011 WE’D all rather prevent an illness than have to fight the symptoms this winter. So we at Best of Liverpool decided to investigate exactly how to boost your overall immunity in 2011, through some expert advice. Emma Robertson (left) is a nutritional therapist at the Optimal Nutrition Clinic based within Synergy Health Studios at Lord Street in the city centre. Emma tells us how we can look forward to a healthy and happy new year...

“IMMUNOLOGISTS will tell you that it’s almost impossible to never catch a cold. However, it’s also true that people with strong immune systems can get over colds within a few days. To be really serious about boosting your immune system though, you need to consider looking at a holistic approach to your lifestyle. In other words, looking at the whole of you and how you live your life. How you relax, sleep, move, think and eat are the primary issues to think about. Ultimately, we have to concentrate largely on the latter because giving ourselves vital nutrients plays a huge role in helping us to function at our optimum. It is a massive subject but following these basic rules will set you on your way: Carbohydrates – despite the myth, there is no good reason to restrict these unless you have been given a weight loss programme under supervision. The Mediterranean diet, still the healthiest regime known to humans, encourages us to get around 40% of our daily intake from carbohydrates. Also, these contain the serotonin compound that naturally occurs in, for example, brown rice. This can boost your mood and only carbohydrates have the ability to naturally kick-start its production. The general rules of carbs are that they should be nonrefined and natural to us. So, for example, choose artisan bread over factory bread – additives in the latter can stress the system, lowering immunity. Eat plenty of protein, again about 40% of your diet. Oily fish, which contains omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, plus fresh dairy products, meats, nuts and pulses are great sources. The two most helpful items you can give your body for immunity are vegetables and water. Eating lots of green leafy veg – like spinach, broccoli and celery – plus consuming around two litres of water per day is great for boosting your immunity. Think of food as medicine but don’t forget that you should enjoy your food. For those of you with a sweet tooth, there are loads of great vitamins and minerals to be found in fruits such as strawberries and oranges. And,
chocolate, yes chocolate is good for you! Just make sure it’s the dark variety that contains lots of anti-oxidants. You may need some supplementation to support your diet. A good multivitamin, vitamin C, omega-3 fish oils, plus zinc gives a good base line to set you on your way. Whilst food is one of the most important factors in immunity, I always maintain to clients that how they relax, move, sleep and think will have a heavy burden on them if there is great imbalance in their lives. If you have a balance between your yang (positive, aggressive energy) and yin (passive, gentle energy) you are on your way to achieving harmony. Recognising, challenging and changing unhelpful thoughts and behaviours will not only make your days more positive but you’ll also be able to sleep better. If you are on your way to achieving this but need some help with your sleep, magnesium supplementation can help because it relaxes your muscles. And, sleep has a massive part to play in protecting our defences from disease. We are living in times when almost everyone is working harder so how you spend your parasympathetic time – when you’re not working and in a heightened sense of anticipation – will have great influence on how you feel and function at work. Visit a farmers’ market, do some gardening, cook, enjoy a quiet weekend in... whatever you do, prepare yourself for work by deriving pleasure and relaxation from things you do outside of work. Also, try and include, within your relaxation, plenty of exercise. This might include regular group exercise at a boot camp or a frequent walk in healthy, even breathtaking surroundings. Finally, notice I haven’t mentioned what you shouldn’t do. 2011 is about focusing on the positive, following the above steps, having fun and living life to the full. Just remember to eat, sleep, move, think and relax well and you could be well on the way to stronger immunity”. The BIG interview
Merseyside's most haunting... Sarah Hooley talks to Derek Acorah about ghosts, past lives and his love of Liverpool... AS a closet fan of the paranormal and avid watcher of all ghost-hunting shows, I'll admit that it was with starry eyes that I dialled the number of Merseyside's silver-haired psychic, Derek Acorah. Taking time out for a quick reprieve during his busy schedule of tour dates, Derek came across as friendly and charismatic as he appears on screen. Best known for his appearances on Living TV's Most Haunted and Ghost Towns, the softly spoken Scouser is one of the UK's top mediums and has become renowned for his lively possessions and spookily accurate communication with the dead. So when did Derek discover he could talk to those beyond the grave? "I first realised I had the gift at the age of six when I saw the spirit of my deceased grandfather in my grandmother's home in Bootle," he explains.
and in the past 14 years Derek – with a helping hand from his spirit guide 'Sam' – has notched up an impressive selection of tours, best-selling books, plus TV and radio programmes that would make even the most successful celeb green with envy. His current tour, The Paranormal Experience, is a fusion of clairvoyant spirit mediumship and past life regression. An interactive show, Derek shares the stage with good friend and Port Sunlight-based regressionist, Alan Bates. "The information that it is possible to achieve is fascinating," he confesses. "One that stands out for me is when a man was regressed to his former life and he started talking in a young female's voice. It was explained that this soul was a young girl who unfortunately had lost her life when she was 16-years-of-age, passing away due to the effects of consumption. "The soul described her family life in the 1800s and said that she had been buried by her mother and father in a specific graveyard. This information was later confirmed after the man did some research. It's always exciting to hear at a later date that the information given on any night has been researched and confirmed as genuine." But despite enjoying life on the road, Derek says he's always happy to come back to Merseyside. "I most definitely miss home when I'm away on tour. I can't describe my feelings of joy when I see the motorway signs pointing to Liverpool," says the psychic, who has had more than one or two spooky encounters in the city. He adds: "I have visited so many haunted locations in Liverpool and they are all compelling in their own right. I think I was most moved by a recent investigation to the old Stanley Dock, site of Liverpool Heritage Market. I was amazed to discover that I was surrounded by Americans who were there in spirit. It turns out that the place had been a hospital and mortuary for American soldiers and airmen during the war. There was a lot of activity of all different types within the walls of the massive building, including a lost child

I think I was most moved by a recent investigation to the old Stanley Dock, site of Liverpool Heritage Market. I was amazed to discover that I was surrounded by Americans who were there in spirit.” "He had passed away some years before I was even born. Although I didn't realise then that I had a psychic gift, I can remember being frightened at the thought of a stranger being in my grandmother's home. I soon began to realise that I was a little different to my friends although at the time I kept very quiet about it as I didn't want to be viewed as being different." It wasn't until Derek was older — and after fulfilling his boyhood dream of playing for Liverpool FC under the great Bill Shankly – that he began to develop his talent and work as a medium, offering private readings from a shop premises in Wavertree. Word soon spread about Derek's reputation and a few years later, he received a call to appear on the TV show, Livetime. As the saying goes, the rest is history, Photo: Eddie Barford

What does Derek predict 2011 has in store for Liverpool....? Q. Who do you see winning the Liverpool FC v Everton FC derby match this month? A. "A draw between Liverpool and Everton." Q. Do you foresee Liverpool and Everton ever sharing a stadium? A. "The two teams will never share a stadium." Q. What do you see in the year ahead for X Factor's Rebecca Ferguson? A. "I see total stardom for Rebecca Ferguson. I can see her heading to America and making a name for herself there too." Q. Do you have any tips or predictions for the Grand National? A. "Look out for a young horse with an Irish jockey wearing purple and blue silks." Q. What events do you see happening in Liverpool in 2011? A. "A famous Liverpool celebrity will receive a well-deserved honour. There will be a major disturbance within the council and the police force. A baby will be born to a pensioner against all odds. There will be talks about the sale of Radio City."
who had starved to death following the murder of her mother." Not everyone's a 'believer' but this doesn't bother the ever cheerful and upbeat Derek. “I ignore negativity, " he says. "What's the point of holding on to it or letting it bother you? I am sincere in my work and I love to see the joy that this work brings to people. If the press find negativity in that, then I feel sorry for them." And judging by his legion of loyal fans — and the fact that Derek and his clairvoyant skills remain as sought-after as ever — he certainly has nothing to worry about. He concludes happily: "I
have a new British spring tour coming up, details can be seen on my website, www.derekacorah.com, and of course I will be taking to the road once again with a Paranormal Experience tour with Alan Bates. I'm also writing a book which will hopefully be published in spring 2011 and I am working on my 'warts and all' autobiography which I think will prove an interesting read. It looks to be another very busy year!" Catch Derek and Alan at the 'Paranormal Experience' at Thornton Hall Hotel, Wirral on January 28. Tickets are priced at £18.50 and are available from 0151 353 3716 or www.thorntonhallhotel.com

Call of the Cobbles
Andrew Lancel as new Coronation Street character Frank Foster
Sarah Hooley catches up with one of Corrie's newest cast members, star of stage and screen, Andrew Lancel... IN the space of a few months, Andrew Lancel has gone from patrolling the streets of Sun Hill to pounding the cobbles of Coronation Street. An exciting new challenge for the South Liverpool-based actor, Andrew, who played DI Neil Manson in The Bill until the soap was axed earlier last year, says he can't wait to join the Corrie cast. He laughs: "I was absolutely made up when I was asked to join Coronation Street and there was never any doubt I wouldn't do it. Corrie's a national treasure — and what a time to join on their 50th anniversary celebrations! I actually worked on it as an extra when I was a teenager too, so it's wonderful to come back as a proper character. "On my first day I was walking towards the Green Room, which is just around the corner from the fabled cobbles, and Ali King who plays Carla, rushed over and gave me a cuddle and showed me in. I know it's a cliché, but everyone's been so welcoming and after leaving the cosy bosom of The Bill which I knew would be hard to fill in my heart, it seems like Corrie is doing just that. Plus it's a lot nearer to home!" he jokes. Andrew's character, Frank Foster, is due to make his first appearance as the business associate of Carla Connor (Alison King) on January 20. And according to soap rumours, it's not long before Frank sets his sights on barmaid Michelle (Kym Marsh).
Andrew adds: "I can't say too much, but he has very nice suits, he's a successful man and there are many sides to him. You can expect to see a lot of interaction with the other characters.” Andrew's glittering career already boasts an impressive list of TV and film credits, with roles in hit programmes including BBC drama Cardiac Arrest, Queer As Folk and Britishfilm Wide-Eyed and Legless staring Julie Walters. So how does he think being in Corrie will change things?
“The city's just a great place to live — it ticks every box. I'm a big fan of The Beatles and Everton FC and love the people here — I even married a Scouser!” The 40-year-old actor says modestly: "I don't know to be honest. I've been very lucky and have never had more than three months out of work. I love getting to grips with a new role and I'm just so excited about the storyline. It's going to be a lot of fun!" It's not just acting that Andrew's passionate about either. As well as being a talented singer (he won
Celebrity Stars in Their Eyes, no less), Andrew says he loves Liverpool and is a self-confessed 'blue nose'. "I go and watch Everton every week and am involved with their wonderful charities – Everton in the Community and The Everton Collection Charitable Trust, which is fantastic," he explains proudly.
"The city's just a great place to live — it ticks every box. I'm a big fan of The Beatles and Everton FC and love the people here — I even married a Scouser! — and I'm very proud of the city. Quite simply, it's home.” Watch out for Andrew making his first appearance in Corrie later this month.

WE always knew Liverpool was a melting pot of creative talent – and now the city can add Melissa Burns to its list. A budding graphic design and illustration student, Melissa beat off stiff competition to win the chance to design the Cavern Walks Shopping Centre's Christmas advertising campaign last month. Melissa with her winning The competition gave illustrations at entrants the chance to design a Liverpool Central Station series of illustrations, each depicting the centre's boutique fashion stores, and were incorporated into the centre's Christmas adverts. Melissa, who is studying at John Moores University's School of Art and Design, says she was delighted to win and hopes it will give her a big step up the career ladder once she graduates.

Winter warmers
Tapas is just the tonic to combat a case of the January blues says Katie McLoughlin LET’S face it, January’s a cold, bleak and somewhat miserable month, so in a bid to cheer ourselves up, the boyfriend and I headed to Salt House Tapas for a healthy dose of Spanish fayre. The independently owned restaurant opened its doors in summer 2010 and, whilst you’re certainly not going to get the fabled Spanish climate on Hanover Street, the eatery’s vibrant tapas dishes were just the thing to add a touch of Spanish sunshine to our day. Situated opposite John Lewis in Liverpool ONE, Salt House Tapas is in a character-packed listed building and clever touches like colourful cushions on the bench seating and authentic Spanish paprika tins on the tables give the restaurant a relaxed ambience and the feel of a Spanish neighbourhood tapas bar. Owned by a globe-trotting chef, the eatery offers an extensive array of freshly prepared dishes ranging from traditional tapas fayre to specialities such as an acorn-fed Ibérico charcuterie selection; sticky quince roasted

With funds somewhat low after the festive season, we opted for Salt House’s fantastic value lunch menu, which offers three tapas dishes plus sourdough bread to mop up all those delicious flavours or just £8.90 between 12pm–5pm seven days a week. Ideal for lunch when you’re short on time, the service was fast and friendly and we had just enough time to take a few refreshing sips of our sauvignon blanc before the tasty sourdough bread arrived with plenty of tangy
HEAVENLY HOT CHOCOLATE This cheeky recipe from those talented guys at The Noble House is the perfect pick me up!
HOT CHOCOLATE MARUMBA Ingredients: ● 1 1⁄2oz Santa Teresa ● Gran Reserva rum ● 30ml Chai syrup ● 2 dashes of Aztec Chocolate bitters ● 3 tsp hot chocolate powder ● 125ml full fat milk Whipped cream for topping
Method: ● Warm the milk and pour into a tall latte glass. Add the chocolate powder and mix thoroughly until this dissolves. ● Next pour in the rum, Chai syrup and Aztec Chocolate bitters and give it a big stir. ● Add whipped cream on top and garnish with chocolate powder and nutmeg.
balsamic vinegar and olive oil to dip it into. The fixed lunch menu offers a high degree of choice and we opted to share crispy calamari with lemon and ailoi; grilled whiting fillet with chorizo and chive butter; roasted field mushrooms with manchego shavings and rocket; apple and walnut salad with Salt House dressing and goat’s curd; chargrilled spiced chicken with cous cous and last but by no means least Leon chorizo with tomato, leek and bean cassoulet. Beautifully cooked, all six of the dishes were fresh, flavoursome and delicious, with the melt-in-themouth whiting and meaty mushrooms particularly good. Finishing our meal with a rich espresso, we left the bustling eatery very happy and will definitely be coming back the next time we need a taste of the sunny Mediterranean to brighten our day. Visit Salt House Charcuteria & Tapas Bar on Hanover Street, Liverpool, L1 3DW, call 0151 706 0092, or log onto www.salthousetapas.co.uk. Open seven days a week from 10am-10.30pm.
Whisky and Spice and all things nice! FOLLOWING hot on the heels of its last Wine and Spice evening, Aigburth Road eaterie The Gulshan will host an intimate one off whisky tasting dinner. “September sees the Gulshan celebrate 25 years,” says Jad Rahman, bar manager of the upstairs cocktail bar. “To celebrate we have planned some interesting events leading up to the landmark birthday. Our taster evenings have already proved to be a huge hit, a possible cocktail and spice evening is already being put together as well as more wine and spice evenings planned over the next few months.” Owners Mustafa and Salina Rahman have been working closely with their whisky expert David Kelly of Whyte and McKay, to come up with a special menu, which they will be personally cooking on the night, to accompany the chosen whiskies. Jad adds: “With the lead up to Burns night what better way to celebrate than with a whisky? Although at first it may seem like an odd pairing I am confident that this traditional after dinner drink can complement the flavourings of Indian food.” David Kelly will entertain and talk about the four pairing whiskies he has chosen for the menu. Wines will also be available. Tickets are now on sale for the event on Thursday, January 20 at 7pm at £35 per person. Phone 0151 427 2273 or visit www.gulshan-liverpool.com
WITH the sub zero temperatures tightening their icy grip, we are all in need of some serious warming up. As the cold weather takes hold, McGuffie's has put some warming comfort food on the menu, such as traditional Scouse, and its signature soups have been selling out. Here, the cafe bar on Castle Street kindly shares its recipe for goulash soup with us. Serving eight, the soup is perfect for home freezing.

McGUFFIE'S GOULASH SOUP Ingredients: ● 1 lb of beef top sirloin steak (cut into 1/2-inch cubes) ● 2 cups of beef broth (if your cupboards are bare, brands like Knorr sell a decent beef broth) ● 2 small potatoes (peeled and cubed) ● 1 onion (chopped) ● 1 green pepper, chopped ● 2 carrots (chopped) ● 1/2 can of crushed tomatoes ● 1/4 of a tube of tomato purée ● 1 tablespoon of olive oil ● 1/2 a cup of water ● 1 tablespoon paprika to flavour ● 1/2 tablespoon sugar ● 1 teaspoon salt ● 1/2 teaspoon pepper ● Just a pinch of cayenne pepper ● 2 tablespoons of caraway seeds
Method: ● Drizzle oil into a large pan; add in the beef, onion and green pepper and cook in the oil until the meat is browned on all sides; drain, then stir in your veg, broth, water & seasoning, bringing to a boil. ● Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 25-30 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Then stir in the tomatoes and tomato purée. ● Finally, cover and simmer for a further 25-30 minutes or until the beef is tender. ● Serve the soup with warm French bread and butter for the ultimate wintertime indulgence.

Back to basics Never mind home sweet home, Sue Kelbrick comes over all Blue Peter and shows you how to create your own home made home THANKS to the credit crunch and television programmes such as Kirsty’s Home Made Home on Channel 4, more and more people are turning their hands to traditional art and craft techniques to accessorise their home, and with January being National Hobby Month, now is the time to get creative. The best bit is that making your own accessories for your home helps to add a truly personal touch – you simply won’t find the same pieces anywhere else. You don’t have to be an art and crafts expert to have a go. There is something to suit everyone from the complete novice to the seasoned pro, so put on a pinny, get out your scissors and read on, for some inspired interior design ideas.
STITCH IN TIME
FLOWER POWER EVERYONE knows how to press flowers. It couldn’t be simpler – just pick a variety of wild flowers and press them between the pages of a heavy book. Word of advice – it might be worth putting a piece of kitchen roll between the flowers and the book itself to prevent any moisture spoiling the pages. Or if you want to do it properly then you can pick up a professional flower press relatively cheaply. Aspace gifts do a lovely flower pressing set for £10 which includes the press, ribbons and glue, plus trinket boxes, cards, envelopes and bookmarks to decorate, so you can really let your imagination run wild. Visit www.aspace.co.uk for more information. Once the flowers are dried and pressed simply arrange onto card and glue down. You can then frame the card and put it up on the wall or on a sideboard for a really pretty addition to any room.
If the thought of knitting or crocheting has you recoiling in horror then maybe cross stitch is for you. The thinking behind the craft is very simple – you embroider X-shaped stitches onto fabric which has holes ready made in it to create a pattern or picture of your choice. The beauty behind cross stitching is that you can keep it as simple as you like or if you really have a flair for it you can embroider the most fantastic patterns. Just to warn you though – once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s highly addictive! Start off with a ready made kit such as the Camper Lovers’ Words kit from Pearl and Earl, £75. The kit contains everything you need to make a 100% wool tapestry and it’s available from Granny Knits, www.grannyknits.com. If you want to start with something even easier then making your own felt cushion couldn’t be more straightforward. Check out dotcom gift shop’s Feltcraft Rabbit Cushion kit, £8.95. The kit includes instructions, a plastic sewing needle, plastic buttons, coloured sewing cotton, pre-cut felt pieces and stuffing. Available from www.dotcomgiftshop.com
HEART OF GLASS ADD a really personal touch to a plain wine glass or glass bowl by having a go at glass designing. Take inspiration from magazines or the world of art and design, or even from nature itself to come up with an original design or image to put onto the glass. Next take some acrylic paints and a narrow tipped paintbrush and carefully paint on your design. Let it dry thoroughly before doing anything with it. If you are feeling a bit more adventurous then why not have a go at glass engraving? It requires some serious kit and takes some practice but the results are well worth the effort. Dremel produce a dedicated engraver which is ideal for precision engraving on wine glasses and the like. The specialised Dremel Engraver kit, £14.99 includes the engraver itself as well as a template for engraving letters and numbers. Visit www.dremel-direct.com for more details. With a little time and lots of imagination you can create a really unique look for your home.

BEST OF LIVERPOOL
IN Crosby and Waterloo you have two great areas to visit. And if you’ve not been before, winter’s not a bad time to get over there. Crosby beach in winter is a wild and impressive place. You’ll really blow the cobwebs away with a walk along the sands or the promenade. Both stretch as far as the edges of Seaforth Docks, across in front of the Marina, dunes and parkland stretching from Waterloo along to the Lifeboat Station at Hall Road in Blundellsands. It makes for a pleasant if bracing, (depending on the weather), stroll along part of Sefton’s attractive coastline. And don’t forget the main tourist attraction along this stretch of beach – Anthony Gormley’s Another Place – that fascinating series of sculptures that speckle the beach and look like drowning men at high tide! Venture inland and there’s much to keep you entertained. The area is served by three Merseyrail stations on the Hunts Cross to Southport line and each of them gives useful access to sites of interest in the Crosby and Waterloo area.
The northernmost station is Hall Road. This serves the Blundellsands area of Crosby which is an area full of grand and sought-after housing, the domain of the rich and even the famous (Jamie Carragher lives in the neighbourhood). If you’re a sport lover this station is great as it gives easy access to the fabulous coastal links of West Lancashire Golf Course. What’s more, it’s very close to the ground of the historic Waterloo Rugby Club. The club was founded over 125 years ago, why not get over there and cheer them on? If football’s more your thing, get off at the neighbouring station: Crosby and Blundellsands. This station is near to Marine FC’s Arriva Stadium. One of the oldest clubs in Merseyside, they were founded in 1894 and currently play in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. If you fancy watching some real football, get yourself to Marine. It’s not far to the shops either from the station, though a short walk is required, or you could take a bus as most local buses stop in Crosby village. Just head up towards Coronation Road
where the Crosby village shops start. The main village hub itself is further on up the road and contains small local stores and a large supermarket. Crosby has always been known for its nightlife and there are certainly some good pubs and bars in the main village and on the roads leading off it. Waterloo is also a very popular place for a drink or a meal out. The main social hub of Waterloo is conveniently centred around South Road and St John’s Road, offering you two long high streets filled with shops, restaurants and take-aways. The main road that connects them is Crosby Road North and here you’ll find even more shops, plus Crosby Library and Civic Hall. Across the road is the well-known and respected Plaza cinema – still proudly fighting off the lure of the multiplexes. Waterloo station is on South Road, as is the bus terminus, so public transport links are very good for those wanting to get to Waterloo. And then, from South Road you can easily head to Crosby’s attractive Marina and the start of the beach beyond, and so we’re right back to where we started on this whistlestop tour of Crosby and Waterloo. Make sure you visit and explore the place for yourself very soon.

Q: What is the small island off Malta called? Deadline: Friday, January 21
TRUDGING through the snow in a bid to get to work, one’s mind starts to wander and imagine escaping to sunnier climes with azure skies and waves gently lapping the shore. So to give yourself something to look forward to, why not start planning your spring or summer break? easyJet airline company predicts hot spots for 2011 will be Brussels, Gibraltar and Malta. Ali Gayward, UK commercial manager of easyJet, says: “With 10 new route launches in 2010, easyJet passengers travelling from Liverpool now have access to 33 destinations ranging from traditional sun, sea and sand holiday spots to cultural city breaks. “We are predicting that our new routes to Brussels and Gibraltar, which start flying in early 2011, will be must-visit destinations next year together with firm family favourite, Malta. “Brussels is ideal for couples or groups of friends who want to experience an alternative city break with dining, shopping and sightseeing to rival any major European city. Our new service from Liverpool John Lennon Airport will begin on February 7, 2011 and is easyJet’s first route from the UK to Brussels! “Our new route to the Mediterranean favourite, Gibraltar, is bound to be a hit with anyone wanting an affordable, sunny getaway this summer. The destination, which is accessible with easyJet from March 29, 2011, offers sunshine, sandy beaches and crystal blue waters for a relaxing escape. Plus, with tax-free spending, it’s a perfect location for Brits who are watching the pursestrings. “Malta is likely to remain a favourite next year. Famed for its clear blue waters and warm temperatures, and with only a two hour flight time, it’s the perfect place to take the family for a summer holiday. It is also rich in history and sights, providing days out and things to do for the family away from the beach. “We want to make sure people get the

most out of their holidays and at easyJet our aim is to offer the widest variety of destinations to as many people as possible. Our top routes provide the perfect opportunity to catch a bit of much-needed sun or take in the rich culture of many European cities.” For more information or to book visit www.easyJet.com
BRUSSELS THE Belgian capital of Brussels offers a perfect city break destination with dining, shopping and sightseeing to rival any major European city. Visitors can explore the city’s highlights including the spectacular Grand Palace, stylish pavement cafes, the Sablon district and picturesque parks through the charming cobbled streets and tree lined boulevards. Also worth a visit is the Horta Museum, dedicated to the life and work of the Belgian Art Nouveau architect, Victor Horta, housed in his former house in Saint-Gilles. Meanwhile, the Musée Bruxellois de la Gueuze museum guides visitors through the family-run Cantillon brewery, where the owners still proudly use traditional methods to make their strange lambic beers. Accommodation in Brussels ranges from the budget/mid price 3* Hotel 322 Lambermont where a double room starts from £70 per night (bed and breakfast) to the luxury 5* Hotel Metropole where a standard double room costs from £116 per night (bed and breakfast).
GIBRALTAR THE ‘home from home’ British territory is the perfect destination for those in search of a Mediterranean holiday out of the Eurozone. Gibraltar, which lies at the southernmost tip of Spain, offers Mediterranean sunshine, sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and tax-free spending with the Gibraltarian pound making it a perfect location for recession-hit Brits. No trip to Gibraltar would be complete without scaling the Rock of Gibraltar which stretches 426 metres (1,396 feet) high and dominates the skyline.
