GUIDE TO CHRISTMAS

32 HEADING OVER TO... 34 MOOSE AND MOUNTIES

Editor’s Letter WE’VE been enjoying a real glamour-fest here at Best of Liverpool. It started off with us watching the majestic Queen Mary 2 glide into port from our offices on Old Hall Street, our eyes misting over as we imagined ourselves shimmying down the glass staircase in a glitzy little number, Mohito in hand, making our way to the roulette tables. Our thirst for glamour continued with a sneaky tour round the soon-to-be opened Hilton Liverpool hotel with its seductive cocktail bar and plush suites. And our Saturday nights have been transformed into a feast of sequins and glitter balls with the resurgence of Strictly Come Dancing - made all the more watchable with the delectable Ricky Whittle swirling around the floor - definitely a reason to stay in and snuggle up on the chaise longue. However, to tease us out from hibernation, the city’s venues have provided us with a feast of entertainment. Read our what’s on guide to events from the DaDa Festival to Liverpool Music Week and not forgetting, an explosive line-up of Bonfire night displays. This really is my favourite time of year, heading off to Sefton Park to watch the fireworks with a flask of mulled wine and some cinder toffee. And it’s also time to start thinking of the C word - yes, Christmas will be here before you know it. But panic ye not. In our latest issue, we bring you our guide to all things festive from party frocks and make-up to food, decorations and gifts including a bumper bling section. Also in this issue, I get wrapped up like a Christmas turkey in a quest for beautiful skin and Sarah shares her holiday snaps from her road trip to Canada with us. Wrap up and be decadent!

Talk of town STRICTLY SUPERB

HOT GOSSIP Michelle Rushton has her ear to the ground

Hollyoaks’ hearthrob, Ricky Whittle, can’t put a foot wrong in our eyes. Suddenly, we at Best of Liverpool are finding every excuse to stay in on Saturday nights to watch the St Helen’s star flaunt his fancy footwork on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. The actor who plays hunky Calvin Valentine in the Channel 4 soap, is a firm favourite to win. He has stood out from the start with his natural rhythm and flair for Latin American moves. And along with The Bill’s Ali Bastian, he really is the one to beat. As talented as he is, we can’t deny, part of the appeal is that he is very easy on the eye with those chest-revealing sparkly shirts! But although he makes it look so easy, Ricky has been working hard to keep his place in Strictly, juggling 12 hour filming schedules with gruelling training sessions in the dance studio, with dance professional Natalie Lowe. And the going got tough last week while the pair were rehearsing the samba. On his official blog, Ricky says: “I damaged my leg in the dress rehearsal and Nat damaged her shoulder and nearly broke her toe.” But hopefully we should be seeing a lot more of Ricky as he’s proved to be a real fighter. A few years ago, doctors said he’d never play sports again after a nasty football injury but he proved them wrong. He recently told New! Magazine: “I’m very competitive and I want to be known to do well. I don’t want to embarrass myself on TV!” But we don’t think there’s any chance of that. He gets a perfect 10 every time from us! Best of luck next week Ricky! 04

Influenced by this autumn/winter’s trend for bold hair shades, Sharni Deakin from Bobbers Hairdressing in Liverpool has been crowned the winner of the prestigious Paul Mitchell Color Challenge 2009 with her stunning purple-hued entry. The talented young stylist will be going to Vegas next year as her prize. Clapperboard Presents will screen the Liverpool premiere of David Morrissey’s first feature film Don’t Worry About Me at Picturehouse@FACT on Tuesday. The film, starring actors Helen Elizabeth and Jamie Borough, follows southerner David as a one night stand goes wrong and he finds himself stranded and broke in Liverpool. The event will raise funds for the Clapperboard youth project. The Gulshan Indian restaurant in Aigburth has been short listed for what is known as the ‘Oscars of the Curry industry.’ The British Curry Awards 2009 is the hottest event in the curry calendar. More then 2,000 restaurateurs, MPs, diplomats and celebrity guests such as Heston Blumenthal will attend the glittering black-tie occasion which rewards the best restaurants in the British spice industry. The award-winning Gulshan could become one of Britain’s top 10 regional restaurants. Alma de Cuba is ‘cashing in’ with a new venue at Liverpool’s oldest bank. The owners are to open a new £1million restaurant and bar called The Noble House based in the historic Heywood Building, in the heart of the city’s business district. The building, which dates back to 1799, is thought to be Liverpool’s oldest bank building. Although the finer details of the new venue are being kept a closely guarded secret, the focal point of the interior will be a striking Barlas Baylar-designed chandelier, incorporating four miles of nickel chainmail suspended above a custom-made 40ft long, solid oak dining table. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark will this month release a DVD in collaboration with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Morning commuters were treated to a burst of colour when leading stylists from Voodou performed a hairdressing flash mob on a Merseytravel train. A crack team of lightening-paced Voodou girls boarded a Northern line carriage and picked out a passenger for a random makeover on their way to work. Stunned onlookers peeped over the top of their newspapers as the gorgeous redhead was transformed from her weekend hangover into a workplace vixen during the 15-minute journey. Office worker, Hanna Reeson, 19, was thrilled to receive the Voodou treatment from stylists Jenny Gallagher and Chloe Ewart between South Parkway and Central station. The Metquarter will be holding its annual shopping event on November 17 to raise money for the Liverpool Unites charity. There will be a fashion show, promotions, a pamper zone and much mingling at the event. The shopping centre has also welcomed a number of new additions including Claudia Pink vintage jewellery, Jo Malone luxury fragrances and skincare, Lash Out Lashes and Kirsty Doyle designer fashion. FESTIVAL FEVER

Over 50 stores on Liverpool’s Bold Street recently joined forces to celebrate the street in all its glory. The Bold Street Festival was action packed for all to take advantage of with street entertainers, promotions, dancing, music, poetry, art and lots of food sampling. Often referred to as the independent quarter, Bold Street offers a rich variety of shops, cafés and restaurants, art and culture for visitors and locals to enjoy throughout the day and night.

CULTURE GEM Liverpool’s Contemporary Urban Centre (CUC), in the city’s Baltic Triangle, has undergone a revamp and is rapidly becoming well-known as a hub of arts activity in the city. Last month, arts and cultural enthusiasts, together with students, the business community and the public were invited to explore the CUC, housed in a Grade II listed converted warehouse. During the special preview event, the CUC officially unveiled its new programme of events for the forthcoming year and guests were treated to performances from LIPA, a selection of DJs and art by the famous Rich T.

Fun and frolics There’s a real carnival atmosphere in the city, Michelle Rushton sipped a few cocktails, (just to be sociable) and found out more…

FALL FASHION EVENING WITH IAN RUSH THE CLOTHES THROW Liverpool is well known for its love of fashion and in these days of recession and credit crunch, how can we still get labels for less? Alder Hey Imagine Appeal recently teamed up with the Racquet Club in Liverpool to answer that very question with its first ever Clothes Throw. With some of Liverpool’s finest fashionistas supporting the event, and the generosity of Merseyside’s style conscious ladies, there was a plethora of top designer wear for sale, with all money raised going to help the work of the world famous Alder Hey children’s hospital. The concept came from Racquet’s owner Helen Ainscough who wanted to help the hospital after her young daughter Molly May was taken there with viral meningitis earlier this year. She says: “After our ordeal with little Molly we feel indebted to the team at Alder Hey particularly in the caring way they looked after her and us during the illness. "Having made a full recovery we are very keen to work with the Appeal Team in creating new events that capture the imagination and are fun to attend whilst helping raise funds.” Famous names who donated items were The Saturdays, Coleen Rooney and Elizabeth Hurley.

Footballing luminary, Ian Rush, was guest of honour at Kingsmead School, Hoylake, recently for an ‘evening with…’ event hosted by local solicitors, Beech Jones De Lloyd. Guests were treated to a Q&A session with the ex LFC striker and Welsh international. The exclusive invite-only evening was in aid of Ian’s nominated charity, Claire House, with all money raised going to the children’s hospice. A ‘Real Ale and Champagne’ reception awaited guests who also enjoyed mini stadium food canapés of pies and hot dogs - all served by ‘referee’ waiters!

Nothing could rain on the parade of Liverpool ONE which hosted an all out Fall Fashion Fest last month to celebrate a very successful first year of opening. The event showcased key fall fashion lines with three parades led by musicians creating a fantastic carnival atmosphere as they snaked through the streets of Liverpool ONE – a fantastic spectacle for shoppers and passersby. And the celebrations continued in-store with many big brands hosting parties and special offers including the opening of the new GIVe store. Urban Outfitters entertained shoppers with live bands and DJ sets, as well as complimentary drinks courtesy of Camel Club and photography by Paul Williams. Between now and Christmas we can look forward to more openings at Liverpool ONE including Ollie and Nic, Whistles, Habitat, Hollister, Reiss and Aveda.

ORCHARD’S NEW AUTUMN MENU Jessica Fox (Nancy) and Stephen Beard (Archie) from Hollyoaks joined Liverpool diners and cider fans to toast The Orchard’s new Autumn menu at an event at the Blundell Street venue last month. Since opening in May, The Orchard has won fans across the city for its delicious recipes, which use only the best of seasonal and locally

sourced produce which can be traced to within 55 miles of the restaurant. Bubble and Squeak, the quintessential autumn meal, will be making an appearance on the menu followed by a rich, indulgent bread and butter pudding served with raisins and fresh cream.

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for - the Hilton Liverpool is finally opening for business. Best of Liverpool was recently treated to a sneak preview of the world class hotel ahead of the official unveiling on Tuesday November 17. Walking into the reception we couldn’t help but drink in the sheer glamour of the place. Every inch oozes style and luxury from the plush carpets to the contemporary wall hangings - with the décor designed to emulate the flow of the River Mersey and reflect the personality and history of the city.

On the ground floor is the Pima bar which echoes the city’s historic Cotton Trade, and is the most exclusive place to be seen in Liverpool, with its intimate booths and VIP style private recess plus a premier cocktail and decadent champagne list. Set to become one of the city’s finest destination restaurants, The Exchange’s decor also reflects Liverpool’s rich past and the menu offers contemporary North West cuisine. The Grace Suite is a 300 capacity state-of-the-art conference and event facility which draws heavily on Liverpool’s maritime heritage, with the rose wood floor leading to the suite mimicking the shape of the Mersey. It complements eight meeting rooms that can accommodate from 10 to 450 delegates. The Hilton Liverpool boasts 215 bedrooms, including 12 suites, many of which enjoy spectacular views over the Albert Docks. All offer high speed internet access, en suite bathrooms, air conditioning, flat screen LCD TVs, on demand movies, satellite channels, hair dryers, mini bars, safes and 24 hour room service. Most impressive is the Presidential Suite - at £850 a night - one can imagine Sir Tom Jones enjoying a soak in the large round bath whilst warming up his vocals for a gig at the Echo Arena!

However, there are a few beauty issues that need addressing before the Christmas work ‘do’. COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS

NOVEMBER 09

Salon Spotlight Michelle Rushton enjoys some ‘me time’ at the Harbour Club Spa

TREATMENT REVIEW AT the first hint of autumn, the heating gets turned up high in our house, as well as in work and in the car. In fact, wherever I am, I like to be warm. But all this heat wreaks havoc on my skin, stripping it of moisture and leaving it dry and blotchy - not a good look. And I’m spending a fortune on lotions and potions. So in a quest for smooth, nourished skin, I booked myself in for a Dermalogica body wrap at the Harbour Health & Fitness Club, within the Crowne Plaza Liverpool. Beauty therapist, Christine Boyd, started the session with a really thorough consultation to find out about my skin and health in general. She then recommended a Dermalogica Exfoliating Body Scrub Treatment followed by a Body Therapy Hydro Pack to soothe and rehydrate my skin. She showed me to the treatment room and left me to undress while she prepared the skin treatments. Not being the most bodily confident person, I felt a little sheepish donning a fetching paper hat and knickers but I needn’t have worried about being too exposed as I was provided with towels to protect my modesty. Christine then exfoliated my skin, smoothing away the dull cells, using a body

scrub treatment, customised with aromatherapy essential oils which she informed would help smooth my skin, whilst relaxing stressed muscles and restoring vital nutrients. She massaged my tired muscles with products containing hydro active mineral salts, stress relief treatment oil and conditioning body wash which smelled absolutely divine and made my skin feel alive and tingly. Applying an ultra soothing, hydrating mud pack personalised with aloe vera, stress relief treatment oil and hydrating body cream, Christine then swaddled me in a thermal wrap. I’m sure I resembled the Christmas turkey wrapped in Bacofoil - but I didn’t care as no one could see, and the treatment felt really warm as it infused my skin with moisture. Placing some soothing pads on my eyes and some chill out tunes on the iPod, Christine dimmed the lights and left me to relax for a while. Working full time and having a one-yearold baby doesn’t allow for much ‘me time’ so just lying there listening to the sounds of a waterfall was sheer bliss. I emerged all floaty and serene, skin glistening and nourished, senses soothed and ready to take on the world again.

Shopping for her CHRISTMAS CORKER

PUTTING ON THE

IF you’re worried that your festive fashion sense is more Christmas cracker than Christmas corker, read on. Best of Liverpool caught up with Nicola Cupples, style director and owner of My Style Companion, to find out what's hot this season. NICOLA’S TOP YULETIDE TRENDS ARE: •Sequins and sparkle everywhere! Eighties disco fever is back with a vengeance, so get set to sparkle at the office party. Sequinned hero jackets, dresses, vest tops and leggings will create all the glitz and glamour you need. Who needs a glitter ball?! •Corset dresses are another big hit this year, so think underwear as outerwear. Corset detailing, moulded cups and body con pieces are a sexy wardrobe addition for ladies who want to make an impact. •The one shouldered dress was a hit on the catwalk again this year. For ladies who want something a bit more covered, opt for a full length one shouldered Grecian style number for instant red carpet glamour. INSIDER TOP TIPS Nicola advises on how to avoid those Christmas fashion faux pas’… •Buy now! Look for a great outfit now, rather than waiting until December when everyone else will be buying theirs. •Don't buy your whole outfit from one shop. It looks too contrived and ‘matchy’ and will date really quickly. •Cheap does not necessarily mean bargain! Budget fabric can age and cheapen a woman’s image and many styles often aren’t cut or finished as well as better quality alternatives. •Get good foundations! A good supportive well fitting bra and control knickers can knock inches off your waist and provide a great base for clothes to just skim off. •Understand your shape. If you know how to showcase your best features, you will waste less money on expensive one hit wonders; look thinner, younger and feel fantastic. For further information about Nicola, visit www.mystylecompanion.com

The BIG interview

Mad for music IVERPOOL has long been renowned for its music, so with a helping hand from the founder of Cream, James Barton, it was inevitable Liverpool Music Week would fast become a success. James has been gracing the local clubs from a young age and has since become widely regarded as a successful entrepreneur in the music industry. “I joined the club scene, firstly as a regular party goer, then as a DJ and promoter,” says James. “In the 80s I went travelling and came upon an ingenious way of owning your own club – which was quite a unique thing back then, you simply used a venue on a night the club didn’t open! “So, in September 1988 I opened one of the first dance or ‘acid house’ as it was known then, nights in Liverpool, this lead to me promoting State and Underground in 89, and then on to the popular 051.” It was a case of fourth time lucky for James as Cream burst on to the Liverpool dance scene, and has been churning out dance icons ever since. “Cream was really my third or fourth attempt at being successful in the club world. You learn and gain experience from each idea and the more experience you get usually the better you become. Although I’ve discovered there’s

L

definitely a bit of luck and circumstance involved in this industry!” says James. Cream opened its doors 17 years ago and has since spread further afield from its home city, with Cream events appearing around the UK and the globe. Such as the announcement of what is

“Since we started out we’ve stayed true to our ambition to get dance music out to the crowds, with a great outdoor set-up and the best line-up of DJs who aren’t scared to push musical boundaries” sure to be a fantastic, first-ever Creamfields event in Abu Dhabi on December 11. James says: “Since we started out we’ve stayed true to our ambition to get dance music out to the crowds, with a great outdoor set-up and the best line-up of DJs who aren’t scared to push musical boundaries and who are as

enthusiastic about playing their set as the crowd are for hearing it.” Cream recently celebrated its 17th birthday with a great line up at its original birthplace, Nation, which included DJ/producer Eric Prydz, Deadmau5 making his Cream debut, and Sebastièn Legèr to name but a few. When James was younger he says he was ‘mad for his music’ and often visited the Royal Court, Empire and Picket to catch the latest gigs. He says: “I caught the last of the post-punk era with the likes of the Jam, the Clash and Echo and the Bunnymen. Dance music dominated after that for me, but as I’ve got older I felt there was a lack of these bands, so for Liverpool Music Week the traditional live bands are back.” Although in its seventh year, James only began working with the founder Mike Dean on Liverpool Music Week around four years ago. “When I got involved, Mike and I aimed to build the festival and step it up a couple of notches, and I think it’s really gaining a strong reputation now with agents, artists and fans. Plus with Creamfields in the summer it’s great to have a winter festival in the city. “This year we’re delighted with the groups on, it took a lot of convincing to get The Specials to come to Liverpool and they sold out fast, but we have a

huge line-up with great bands. “Mike and I are a little more focused this year. We have some set venues such as Masque which has just had a complete re-fit, the stunning Alma de Cuba and also Bumper, so they’ll be stronger shows,” says James. Just some of the big acts yet to make an appearance for the event include Kasabian at the Echo Arena, The Enemy

NOVEMBER 09

“We’re already planning for next year. We do shows all around the world so it doesn’t stop; there is so much competition to get the best acts, and it’s my job to convince them that our events are the ones they want to be at” couple of months, but now it’s all year round, many bands already know a year in advance where they’re going to be performing so you have to get in early. “That’s part of the success of Creamfields. Last year we booked Calvin Harris and Dizzee Rascal for this year’s Creamfields, and by the time Dizzee was performing at Creamfields he’d had two number ones – so you need to be able to predict who’s going to make it. “We’re already looking to the next Creamfields event with the likes of Deadmau5 and David Guetta likely to be in the line-up.” Although if you can’t wait until next summer then Cream has just announced its Boxing Day event with Calvin Harris, Above & Beyond, Sander Van Doorn, Laidback Luke and more so be sure to dance your way through the festive season.

at Liverpool University and Reverend and the Makers at Nation. “I’m planning to see as many bands as I can this year, Kasabian are a great band, and I’m actually looking forward to Seasick Steve. There’s no-one else really like him, he has a great combination of country and blues,” says James. Along with all the main bands, Liverpool Music Week also features a ‘free-festival’ which has an amazing range of local bands and up-and-coming groups including Twisted Wheel, Bombay Bicycle Club, Maps and Rumble Strips. “Part of my job at Cream is to spot acts and pick the right people. I’ve been involved in choosing the right DJs for Cream and Creamfields for years so that’s obviously something I find quite natural to do. But working on Liverpool Music Week has made me look at bands as well, so it can be a little bit more difficult picking the right ones, or at least not the wrong ones. It’s all about timing and simply just gut instinct,” says James. “You have to keep your eye out for the acts that are going to be big in six to 12 months’ time, we have to book that far in advance, plus you hear a lot of acts coming through from what the DJs are playing in Cream. “We’re already planning for next year. We do shows all around the world so it doesn’t stop, plus there is so much competition to get the best acts, and it’s my job to convince them that our events are the ones they want to be at.” James and his team organise all of Cream’s events from their central Liverpool offices, which means they’re always busy. James says: “A few years ago we’d be able to put our feet up for a

Emma Thompson talks to Jennifer John and discovers there’s more to Sense of Sound IT’S been a busy month for Jennifer John, from launching her band’s album, performing with Sense of Sound and working nationally providing vocal coaching. As artistic director for Sense of Sound, who featured on last year's BBC’s Last Choir Standing and reached the semi-finals, Jennifer John has plenty to organise. October saw the soulful Sense of Sound performing at the International Slavery Museum for Anthony Walker, then at St George’s Hall with a Halloween spectacular as special guests with Neil Campbell for a classical rock composition, Frankenstein. Jennifer also travelled to Norway to launch her band, Killerfernandez’s album, but one thing she’s passionate about is a new scheme giving every child the chance to sing. “Sense of Sound began as a training organisation 16 years ago and we work nationally with people offering vocal training, aiming to make singing accessible to as many people as possible. “The Sense of Sound choir then started around five years ago and it has become really popular,” says Jennifer. In addition to the huge array of performances such as the opening celebrations of the Echo Arena, the Jazz World stage in Glastonbury and Songs of Praise, Sense of Sound were also chosen for BBC1’s Last Choir Standing. Jennifer says: “We were invited along to audition with 900 other groups, so to reach the final six was brilliant for us! “We’ve performed in all different

situations from the Royal Variety Show to being with Jon Bon Jovi, which was amazing, but it was completely different in a TV studio. “It was very intensive, for about eight weeks we spent three or four days a week in London, it was a great experience, and really good to see how everything operates on a live show. We actually went on to perform with one of the judges, Russell Watson, for 21 dates nationally which was incredible.”

North West Cancer Research Fund gets Sense of Sound with Jennifer John (front left)

Sense of Sound, which is based in Liverpool, has also just been chosen as one of two organisations to help coach ‘hard to teach children’ in Merseyside. This new Government initiative, Youth Music National Body, is a national strategy to allow every child the chance to sing. “This is something Sense of Sound were really pleased to get the chance to do, although it’s currently only in the early stages our head of training Saphena Aziz is leading the youth initiative and can be contacted on 0151 702 7799,” added Jennifer. The 45-strong group have plenty of plans right up to the end of the year. On November 21, the choir has been commission by the Bluecoat, to stage a performance about Malcolm Lowry’s life. “Another fantastic event that I’m really looking forward to is the DaDa Fest (Disability and Deaf arts) awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel on December 3. Sense of Sound have been working with a group of hearing singers and deaf signers which will bring a fresh perspective to signed song. It’ll be a really interesting collaboration,” says Jennifer. Then on December 10, Sense of Sound are hosting ‘Celebrate’ a Christmas concert in the beautiful Alma de Cuba for North West Cancer Research Fund (NWCRF). Jennifer says: “The aim is to raise as much money as possible for the charity and what better way than to mix song with Christmas cheer in the glorious setting that is Alma de Cuba?”

ONES TO WATCH Married to the Sea Married to the Sea have just released their new EP, Hello Digger, which features four of their adventurous, guitar-pop tracks which are sure to grab your attention. This Liverpool based band formed around

three years ago and set out to create rowdy pop that people could dance to. Married to the Sea are also joining in the frolics of Liverpool Music Week performing at Bumper on November 13, check out www.marriedtothesea.co.uk. Marc Gee - Autumn Kill Having spent much of his career writing stage plays and screen writing, Marc Gee has just released his first book, Autumn Kill, a fast-paced crime thriller. Born and bred in Wallasey, in 2001 one of Marc’s plays, Al’s Lads became a full feature film and premiered by BAFTA at the Cannes Film Festival. Recently Marc turned his creative writing to books, he said: “I decided to have a go and it was like a breath of fresh air! “Autumn Kill was an idea I’d had for a while, and now there’s talk of it being made into a TV series. I’ve been asked to write the script which is really interesting, it’s like a new craft writing the script of a book. Plus

I’ve already started on my next book, Declaration of Guilt.” Ilsa Parry After being approached to appear on a new TV series with design legend Philippe Starck, Ilsa Parry shows she has an eye for design. Ilsa from Old Swan was one of 12 British designers recruited for the show Design for life. Ilsa also has her own product line, REthinkthings, and has launched four new products. Ilsa has also created a chaise longue for Kirsty Doyle’s Metquarter shop where her Kaspa lamps are sold.

ESPITE our best efforts, when it comes to trying to create an understated look with our Christmas decorations, how many of us will admit that our homes tend to look more like Blackpool Illuminations by the time we’ve finished? According to John Tasker of Taskers DIY, less is more for 2009 so there really is no excuse for going over the top this Christmas. Here are John’s top tips for getting it bang on trend with this year’s decorations: “New for 2009 are reflector lights,” says John. “Both innovative and stylish, these lights give twice the impact of normal LED lights and are available with specially shaped heads to give a multiple flare effect. “A popular trend for this year are warm white LED lights which are more subtle than the traditional bright white lights and give off

D

a softer, more gentle glow. “Also set to be very much in vogue for 2009, are pencil trees which are both fashionable and practical, and are ideal for small spaces. “With regard to colour, it seems that tradition has gone out of the window for 2009 with new classics such as royal blues, silvers and blacks, very much on trend. Rich colours such as purples, blues, golds, browns and copper are also hot this year.” “In complete contrast to these deep hues, at the opposite end of the spectrum, whites, pearls, pistachios and soft creams look like being a fashionable theme this Christmas.” So before you go to town on the tinsel, heed John's advice and choose your Christmas colour scheme wisely for a stylish and magical look which gives your home that festive sparkle without it resembling Santa's grotto!

Method 1) Line the sides of an 8” cake tin with greaseproof paper, cutting two 8” round pieces placing one piece on the bottom (keeping one for the top). Pre-heat oven to 150ºc. 2) Together in a medium saucepan, melt treacle, golden syrup, sugar and butter. 3) Puree together the ground ginger and apples in a food processor. 4) In a large mixing bowl put in the puree, the syrup mixture, eggs, and all the dry ingredients and mix by hand until the

mixture is smooth (this will take a few minutes). 5) Pour mixture into cake tin, place greaseproof on top of mixture and cover with a heavy tray (this will allow the pudding to rise evenly). Place into preheated oven for 30 mins. 4) To check if the pudding is cooked, place a wooden or metal skewer into the middle of pudding - if skewer comes out clean then it is cooked - if not cook for a further five minutes and check again.

Toffee Sauce Ingredients 355g muscovado sugar 165ml double cream 250g butter (unsalted) Method 1) Bring butter and cream to the boil, add sugar and stir until dissolved. 2) Cut pudding into required portions, pour over sauce and enjoy.

4) Add arborio rice and stir well (for about one minute). 5) Add stock little by little allowing the rice to absorb the liquid (this will take about 15 mins). When cooked, the rice will just crush between finger tips. 6) With a spoon, separate two quarters of the butternut squash (discarding skin) into the risotto along with the blue cheese, stir well and cook for a further two to three mins. You may need to add a little water to loosen the risotto. Season to taste. 7) With the remaining two quarters of butternut squash, separate from skin and dice into thumb nail size pieces. Add to risotto with spinach, being careful nut to crush the butternut squash. Adjust seasoning. 8) Serve into four large bowls and grate parmesan on top of risotto.

Fayre ye well If you are in a flap over organising Christmas dinner this year, read Sue Kelbrick’s ultimate guide to the perfect festive feast IF you've got an army of in-laws descending on you this Christmas, you'll be under pressure to create a culinary masterpiece. But if your efforts would be more suited to the Royle family rather than the royal family (remember the episode when Denise defrosts the turkey on the sunbed the night before?!) - take advice from the professionals. Planning ahead is crucial so make sure you allow plenty of time to decide what meat to serve for the main course. Linda Clarke of B Clarkes and Family Butchers, (Allerton Rd in South Liverpool) who have over 40 years’ experience in the industry, recommends ordering the meat well in advance. She says: “Most butchers start taking orders from the beginning of

November but you should allow at least a month. When deciding how much meat to order, for a turkey, allow around 750-900 grams per person which should give a generous serving with enough left over for seconds hopefully! “For smaller numbers it might be worth thinking about something a bit different from the traditional turkey option such as game like pheasant or grouse or even venison, or maybe a duck or a goose, which all provide a delicious alternative to turkey.” But it’s not just about the meat. Make sure you offer a selection of delicious accompaniments to complement the meat and you can’t go wrong. Nigel Paul Smith, executive chef at the Maritime Dining Rooms and selfconfessed roast dinner obsessive, offers the following inside

information on creating the perfect companion to the roast. He says: “I prepare the vegetables the day before by blanching them lightly in boiling salted water so they remain crisp. Refrigerate overnight and then on Christmas Day I plunge these back into boiling salted water shortly before serving, still keeping them crisp. Butter lightly and serve. “On the hob, heat up five or six tablespooons of goose or duck fat and add your dry, part-cooked roast potatoes and cook them until they are a golden brown colour. Then place them in the oven for 30-40 minutes until they are soft in the middle and a beautiful golden brown colour on the outside.” So with a bit of forward thinking, you can ensure your festive fayre is toasted by your guests and hailed a Nigella-style Yuletide triumph!

Nigel Paul Smith, executive chef at Maritime Dining Rooms.

COMPETITION One Christmas must-have is the new Rory & Paddy’s Great British Adventure DVD. The four-part series documenting stepby-step Rory and Paddy’s ‘Great British Adventure’ follows comedians Rory McGrath and Paddy McGuinness as they embark upon an unusual road trip around the UK. As an antidote to the Olympics, the comic pair actually take each other on at the most extraordinary sporting events the nation has to offer, revealing the competitive spirit that flourishes not in giant stadiums, but in fields and pub gardens! The series sees Rory and Paddy throw caution to the wind at Gloucestershire’s notoriously dangerous cheese rolling race, take on the famous pie eating contest in Wigan and race beds in Knaresborough. They also try their hand at bog cycling, Cornish wrestling and pedal car racing in an attempt to beat each other for the glory of being crowned

GOLD Katie McLoughlin helps you find your festive sparkle…

WHETHER you’re shopping for your mum, looking to pop the question in a surprise Yuletide proposal or simply want to spoil a special friend, a stunning piece of jewellery never fails to dazzle your loved ones at Christmas. Jewellery is always a welcome prospect under the Christmas tree, and with the value of gold rocketing in recent months, it’s also a savvy investment. Indeed the price of gold has risen by almost 35% in the last 12 months, so a gift of quality jewellery this Christmas will not only dazzle your loved ones but is something they will

treasure for many years to come as gold continues to be a valuable asset to have. Whatever style of jewellery you choose to make your loved one sparkle this Christmas, before purchasing the gift, make sure you think about their lifestyle, dress sense and age to find an appropriate piece of jewellery. Look at the jewellery they already own too, as this will help you to understand what style they prefer to wear. So whoever you’re buying for this Christmas, show you’ve got a heart of gold with a gift they’ll treasure for years to come.

Best for wife: Sparkly and stylish, this D & G Risky bracelet watch, £350 from Littlewoods.com, will definitely earn you some major brownie points with your wife or girlfriend this Christmas.

Katie McLoughlin meets a Liverpool-based jewellery designer who has taken the ‘make do and mend’ ethos to a whole new level... A BRIGHT young designer from Allerton has brought new meaning to the old adage ‘all that glitters is not gold’ with an exciting new range of bespoke jewellery made entirely from reclaimed items. Creator of accessories and lifestyle brand Hope & Winkle Vintage, Helen Hope, travels the country to source vintage materials which she then transforms into stunning new designs. She explains: “Every piece is designed to tell a story, revamping heirloom vintage trinkets with forward-thinking vision. The brand is eccentric yet classic, making the designs a true delight to wear.” Inspired by all things English heritage, Helen aims to take the make do and mend philosophy to new and innovative heights, saying: “I’m inspired by 1940s austerity and the elite aristocracy, but I like to incorporate tongue in cheek elements into my designs too. “Each of my designs is intended to stimulate the imagination - by gathering

whimsical treasures I can create off-beat heritage inspired heirlooms.” As a former pupil of St Hilda’s C of E High School in Sefton Park, Helen showed early creative promise but really came into her own during her final year at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). Whilst studying fashion and textiles at LJMU, she gained a prestigious Textprint Design Innovation Award, enabling her to show her collections in Paris. She recalls: “While preparing for the exhibition in Paris I developed a series of jewellery to accompany the rest of my collection.” Helen received excellent feedback on her jewellery designs and soon realised the potential that they had, saying: “When large designer labels like Custo of Barcelona actually wanted to buy the copyrights to the designs it felt like such a huge achievement.” Over the next two years Helen nurtured her talents working in London designing

clothing for one of the UK’s top supermarket chains. She says: “I’m proud of what I achieved during my time in London but in truth, Merseyside is far more exciting to me and I decided to return to my roots.” And so Hope & Winkle Vintage was born. Helen launched the label in early spring, initially trading at monthly weekend fetes. However her innovative designs have proven such a hit with Merseyside’s fashion-conscious elite that she’s now gearing up to launch the brand’s first-ever Liverpool high street store. The new store, which opened in October, is based on Petticoat Lane just off Bold Street. True to the Hope & Winkle reclamation concept, the shop’s interior will be no exception when it comes to creativity with Second World War leather suitcases custom-made into display cabinets. Helen adds: “The shop will be an extension of the products, creating a mood reminiscent of a time gone by.”

LIVERPOOL’S LITERARY GEMS The perfect Christmas gift for anyone who loves our fair city, Paul Baker looks at books that celebrate all things of a Merseyside persuasion Liverpool 50s/60s/70s/80s – price £4.99 (buy one, get one free)

Ken Dodd... Look at it my way! – £16.99, hardback

A real souvenir of your favourite Liverpool decade, this is a photo album with a difference. Whichever era you remember the city best, these books capture the changes in its fashion, work, leisure, TV, the arts, sport – even the weather! Each 82-page book is packed with many never-seen-before images from the archives of the Echo and Daily Post, accompanied by facts, figures and memories for anyone who was born, grew up in or experienced Liverpool during these times.

From his debut performance in 1958 to the London Palladium and household name status, one-time ventriloquist Ken Dodd OBE, brings joy and laughter to millions. Now Ken Dodd takes fans on a back-stage tour of his career as captured by award-winning photographer Stephen Shakeshaft, former picture editor of the Echo and Daily Post, who was given more Doddy access than any other photographer. Ken talks for the first time in his own words about his extraordinary world and what makes him tickle-d. By Jove! A unique book with a smile guaranteed on every single page.

Wild Merseyside by John Dempsey – price £4.99, flexibound Take a walk on the wild side with former Echo writer John Dempsey and discover the enchanting plants, animals and birds found on Merseyside. From the common or garden, to the rather rare, John points you in the direction of Leach's petrels off Leasowe, orchids flowering in Sefton's protected dunes and brown hares speeding across our farmlands. Bigger than The Beatles by Bill Harry – £8.99, paperback At the start of the swinging sixties, Liverpool was a remarkable place. A global music and fashion revolution was about to explode inspired by a sound that was tagged by journalist, music promoter and author Bill Harry as ‘Mersey Beat.’ The Beatles took the limelight but the truth is that Liverpool was actually ‘Bigger Than The Beatles.’ Liverpool was a hub of talent and this book investigates why the city had more country and western groups than other cities in Britain, more folk groups, more soul singers, more black artists and more female artists.

All these books are available to order online from www.merseyshop.com Or you can telephone 0845 143 0001, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Play Like Liverpool – £14.99, hardback (Buy before December 24 and get free five issue subscription to LFC Weekly magazine) Imagine if you could sit in the dressing room before a Liverpool match or have a kickabout in the park and get advice from Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Jamie Carragher and Rafa Benitez. This book does exactly that… Torres gives tips on how to improve as a striker, beat defenders and score goals. Gerrard gives advice on striking the ball, timing runs, taking penalties and leading a team. Learn how to tackle like Mascherano, work like Dirk, defend like Carragher and keep goal like Reina. Dr. Everton’s Magnificent Obsession – £14.99, hardback The David France Collection is regarded as the finest compilation of football memorabilia in the world. Featuring some of the rarest football treasures, the 10,000 artefacts chronicle the pedigree of Everton Football Club from the very roots of the club’s existence to the present day, while charting the history of Merseyside and global football. Dr France has teamed up with David Prentice, award-winning chief sports writer of the Echo, to produce a fascinating insight into the collection, something all Evertonians will cherish.

Time out Paul Baker takes a tour round the old towns of Prescot and Huyton PRESCOT and Huyton are towns steeped in history. Each less than 10 miles east of the city centre of Liverpool, they’re both part of Knowsley. A truly historic town, Huyton appears in the records of the Domesday book before even Liverpool. Originally named Hitune, meaning high town, the focal point of the town has always been St Michael’s Parish Church. Meanwhile, Prescot’s name is said to mean 'priest’s cottage.' The town had historic importance in the country, appearing on early maps. King Henry IV had the title of Lord of the Manor for Prescot and weekly markets were staged in the town since the 14th century. There are full town trails that you can take around both Prescot and Huyton at the following website: www.history.knowsley.gov.uk History lovers will find a treasure trove of sites and artefacts to explore in Huyton, from the 12th century Norman font in St Michael’s Church, to the nearby village cross alongside Derby Terrace. And from Huyton Lane you can explore the mysterious Corpse Way – a footpath historically used by funeral mourners, bringing their dead for burial.

Prescot similarly has some excellent, if more modern, history to explore, including the town’s clockmaking and cable manufacturing past, alongside some superb pieces of architecture built in the Regency and Georgian manner. There’s even a half-timbered Jacobean building and a conservation area in Stone Street, with a medieval cobbled passageway thought to be the narrowest in the country. Finally, Prescot Museum is well worth a visit to round off the history tour. But don’t worry if you’re interested in more modern pursuits. Both areas are good for shopping and eating out, with everything from boutiques to high street stores; cafes, pubs and restaurants. There’s a retail park near Prescot called Cables Retail Park where you can browse and grab some bargains. Huyton’s shops are in an area known locally as ‘the village’ where there are loads of independent shops and an indoor market. There are two libraries in the area too, Huyton Library on Civic Way and Page Moss Library on Stockbridge Lane. Huyton Library even has a contemporary art gallery to peruse. If sport’s your bag, you could take in a football match at local team Prescot

Cables FC. The local club play in the Northern Premier League and their stadium is Valerie Park on Hope Street. Golfers should be sure to head to either one of the two 18 hole golf courses in the area: Huyton & Prescot Golf Club, Hurst Park, Huyton Lane or Bowring Golf Club at Bowring Park, Roby Road. The Earl of Derby’s estate is in the area too, along with the sumptuous Grade II listed Knowsley Hall – perfect as a grand wedding venue, the estate contains Knowsley Safari Park. The Safari Park is famous for its menagerie which includes lions, tigers, giraffes, elephants and, of course, those infamous baboons. Don’t worry though – there’s a car-friendly route to bypass them if you value your windscreen wipers! Other local places of interest you have to call into include the Merseyside Dogs’ Trust on Whiston Lane in Huyton, and the National Wildflower Centre in Huyton’s Court Hey Park. Who would have imagined such a hub of history, culture and great shopping existed just a stone’s throw from the city centre? Best take a trip to Huyton and Prescot this weekend and see what you’ve been missing.

HOW TO GET THERE: Travelling by train; take the City Line (Northern Rail services) from Liverpool to either Earlestown for Huyton station or Wigan North Western for Huyton and Prescot stations. There are a wide range of buses leaving Queens Square, Liverpool, stopping at Huyton and Prescot.

BEST OF LIVERPOOL

IT'S a rare occasion when my fiancé manages a smile after being awake for almost 24 hours, but walking into the arrivals lounge of Vancouver airport, not even a severe bout of jet lag can stop his Cheshire cat-like grin. Or for that matter, mine. The first day of our two week road trip from Vancouver to Calgary, we'd been planning our dream holiday for almost a year, so it was with a touch of surrealism that we suddenly find ourselves being whisked through pretty city suburbs to our first stop off point – Vancouver. Nestled on Canada's beautiful west coast, the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver is blessed with superb sea views and mesmerising mountain vistas contrasted against bustling sky-scrappers. And with just three days to spend in the city, we quickly clamber aboard one of many sight-seeing buses From the charming cobbled streets of Gastown; the effervescent market at Granville Island, cycling around Stanley Park and shopping on Robson and Burrard, to taking the magnificent gondola ride up to Grouse Mountain – it doesn't take long for us to fall in love with Vancouver's beautiful scenery and friendly residents. Day four and it’s an early start to collect our hire car before catching the ferry to Victoria. The capital city of British Columbia, Victoria is set on the mild shores of Vancouver Island and as well as being famed for its quaint mix of British heritage – Olde English fudge shops and fish and chips are de rigueur – it attracts scores of tourists like us, hoping to catch a glimpse of orca whales, seals, humpback whales and golden eagles.

And after two nights it's back in the car for a five hour drive to the city of Kelowna. A compact city cradled in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Kelowna enjoys a Mediterranean climate and with its ample supply of vineyards it provides the perfect place to unwind before a day of Westernstyle horse riding at Tod Mountain Ranch. Situated in the beautiful Louis Creek Valley, the newly opened ranch offers a number of holiday options (we’d opted for the 24-hour special) and after a hearty lunch we eagerly slip on a pair of cowboy boots before heading out to explore the breathtaking mountains. The ranch’s easy-going attitude, luxurious cabins and challenging trails are the perfect combination and it was with heavy hearts that we sadly once again said our goodbyes the next day. Seven long hours – and a wild bear spotting – later we arrive at the stunning town of Banff in Banff National Park. Nestled in the lush wilderness of the Canadian Rockies, the charming town is dominated by majestic mountains and as we drive along the bustling Banff Avenue, it suddenly makes the long journey all worth while. We wake the next day to spend a lazy morning strolling around Banff's picturesque gift shops, before making the hour's drive to Calgary – duly kitted out in Calgary Flames' T-shirts and obligatory giant foam hands – to watch the Calgary Flames take on the Florida Panthers in a pre-season NHL ice-hockey match. The following day we’re up bright and early for the first of two trips along the Icefields Parkway. A scenic 142 mile route between Banff and Jasper, it’s along the

Icefields Parkway tourists can access many of the Rockies’ most famous landmarks. Our first stop is the world-famous emerald waters of Lake Louise, followed by its equally beautiful neighbour, Moraine Lake, the dog-shaped Peyto Lake and the enchanting Columbia Icefield. But it’s the Icefields Parkway itself that offers some of the most amazing views. With snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows and turquoise lakes on every corner, it certainly makes a change from the M62 and after a few hours we arrive in Jasper National Park on route to the bijou town of Jasper. The largest national park in the Canadian Rockies, Jasper is the gateway to some of the country's most rugged beauty. And with just one day to spare we make the most of our time with a spectacular journey on the Jasper Tramway, kayaking on Maligne Lake and finishing the day with a well-deserved soak in the 40 degree waters of Miette Hot Springs. But all too soon it's time to leave and as we make our way to Calgary airport already reminiscing about our Canadian adventure, it just goes to show that sometimes dreams really can come true.
