The night saw the stylish hotel transformed into a chic mix of Moroccan and Arabian decor, complete with Hookah pipes, Buddhas and candle-lit storm lanterns. FEBRUARY 10 SPEAKEASY

A NIGHT WITH SPOOKS If you’re a fan of Most Haunted then take part in this spine chilling fundraiser. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust is looking for brave volunteers to be sponsored to spend the night at the Gaumont Cinema in Toxteth on Saturday, March 6 to help raise vital funds for the charity. Over the years, people have reported strange ghostly figures of the long ago staff and cinema goers and mysterious lights... To take part contact Bev Burnham-Jones on 0845 859 1029 or email bburnham-jones@cftrust.org.uk

Ricky Whittle attended an exclusive underground gathering for the launch of Liverpool’s first ‘speakeasy’ at The Noble House. He was among guests, including actress Nikki Sanderson, Terri Dwyer and ex Liverpool footballer, John Barnes, who all indulged in the bar’s signature Apple Martinis and enjoyed being razzle dazzled by Charleston dancers. Party goers were donned in flapper dresses and smoking jackets for the glamorous evening at the new venue which was inspired by the US alcohol ban of the twenties and thirties and the raucous illegal speakeasy parties it spawned. Celebs snuck downstairs to finish the evening off at La Guarida, a discreet bar, hidden away in the basement of the venue.

LIVERCOOL AWARDS The cream of Liverpool gathered in Alma de Cuba for the official after party of the Livercool awards, which was hosted by the business club and lobby group Downtown Liverpool in Business. Guests sipped champagne and cocktails at the glamorous venue as they salsaed the night away to the sounds of local band the 6ix Toys.

HENS & STAGS WAG Danielle Lloyd was recently given the challenge of planning a stag do for Series two of Wedding TV’s reality series, Celebrity Hens and Stags. Each episode will see a celebrity paired with a stag or hen party. The celebrity will act as chief organiser and it’s

up to them to get the hen and stag parties started. In week two Danielle will be playing It’s A Knockout in Bristol. Will she be the life and soul of the party when the pressure is on? Celebrity Hens & Stags, Thursdays at 10pm on Wedding TV (Sky 266 & Freesat 400) www.weddingtv.com

SECONDS FOR SIMON Celebrity chef Simon Rimmer recently returned to Liverpool Women’s Hospital for a second helping. The menu he created for the Hospital has proved a huge hit with patients, according to a new survey which revealed three quarters of patients, including new and expectant mums, have branded the food as excellent. Coleen Rooney may have experienced the new menu which includes vegetable cobbler, sausage casserole and salmon burgers when she recently gave birth to baby Kai at the Women’s.

Football fanatics recently raised an impressive £711.60 for the Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. Five-a-side football teams from all across Liverpool took part in the adidas® cup at the PlayFooball.net centre in Crosby on January 19. Liverpool superstar Glen Johnson and Everton starlets Jack Rodwell and Dan Gosling were on hand to meet and greet the players, including a very happy Liverpool fan and Alder Hey patient, Abigail Thomas, aged one, of Maghull. Abigail’s father, Carl Thomas, said “Alder Hey helps 250,000 children, like Abigail, every year and it’s very encouraging to know that our local community does so much to help such a good cause.” By participating in the tournament at the Crosby centre, players were given the opportunity to win footie-themed prizes such as corporate hospitality at Anfield or Goodison Park and a range of adidas® goodies. The winners of the adidas® cup tournament were Guapa FC, who will be reaping the rewards of their success with corporate hospitality tickets at Anfield or Goodison Park.

Spring into style Sarah Hooley reveals this season's latest trends...

Outfit from New Look

BLAME it on the upcoming London Fashion Week or distant dreams of summer holidays, but we just can't help getting excited by this spring and summer's latest trends! The perfect pick-me up to help us get through the last of the cold winter days, this season's fashion is a real treat so prepare to pack away those snow boots and spring clean your wardrobe. Key trends this season feature pretty vintage-inspired prints, cuter-than-cute milkmaid dresses, cowboy-esque fringing and head-to-toe denim, with romantic ruffles, jumpsuits and boyfriend blazers continuing their reign of popularity. Smart pinstripes and genie pants (this season's new spin on the harems) were another favourite on the catwalks, and spring shoppers can expect to see summery shades of yellow and all white ensembles dominating the shelves. The classic trench coat is also back and cooler than ever. Or for the more daring, underwear worn as outwear is pegged to be one of the biggest crazes hitting the rails this year with Bottega, Dolce & Gabbana and Jean Paul Gaultier all rocking the structured bra top-look - guaranteed to set pulses racing. What's more, the fashion world's love affair with all that's weird and wonderful looks set to remain with cycling shorts (we have our fingers firmly crossed that this is just a nasty rumour) and horned or military epaulettes – ornamental shoulder pieces to you and me - taking the popularity of 80s-inspired fashion to a new level. As for accessories, bold necklaces are still the biggest statement for jewellery-lovers and in stark contrast to last year's sky high killer heels, this season your feet will be pleased to hear that spring makes way for a gorgeous selection of lower height shoes. So go on - put a spring in your step with this season's latest fashions.

WHILE 13 may be unlucky for some, it couldn't be more promising for Liverpool-fashion designer Tanya Maxwell. A talented fashion designer, Tanya is fast becoming a rising star on the city's fashion scene and at the tender age of 24 has already seen her line stocked in premier-boutique Cricket before opening her own store, THIRtEEN, last November. Originally from County Armagh in Northern Ireland, Tanya moved to the city almost seven years ago. And after studying fashion at Liverpool Community College, she went on to complete a degree in Clothing Design and Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University before opening funky boutique, THIRtEEN, in Quiggins at Grand Central on Renshaw Street. Tanya says: “Having the shop has given me a whole new client base and it's just great to have my own little environment.” Every item in the store is personally designed and manufactured by Tanya, and the stylish spring/summer collection “oozes femininity with an edge.” Featuring everything from fabulous full length dresses, classic daywear and gorgeous coats to itsy bitsy party frocks inspired by Luella and Roksanda Ilincic, Tanya lists the effortlessly glamorous style of Fearne Cotton, Alexa Chung and Abi Harding amongst her influences. And with ambitious plans including a charity fashion show and possible expansion for the year ahead, Tanya adds: “As excited as I am to have reached this point with the shop, it is only the beginning of what I have planned!”

Spotlight on spring trends

F&F cream crisscross lace up sandals, £18, from Tesco

Tanya gives us her take on the sharpest spring trends for 2010. She says: ● “Spring 2010 sees us edging away from sharp, edgy bold colours such as midnight blue and shocking fuchsias and steering more towards soft neutral colours like candy floss pink and daffodil yellows. ● "After two years of frills and ruffles you think we'd be packing them away for a decade but it seems that we can't get enough. Stella McCartney's Spring 2010 runway show featured fantastic prints combined with soft ruffles and the result is amazing. Plus, Matthew Williamson, who is renowned for his fabric embellishment and striking prints, has once again amazed with reptile and geometric patterns. ● "New Romantic and new wave trends have made a revival and safari chic is also en vogue."

Katie McLoughlin shows you how to steal Andy Moss’ style...

OLLYOAKS’ star, Andy Moss, who plays Rhys Ashworth in the Chester-based soap, knows a thing or two about style. Like his character who plays in a band with younger brother Josh, Andy has a love of music and his personal style has a distinctly indie feel to it, here’s how to get the 26-year-old actor’s look:

What lies beneath... Sexy underwear isn’t just for women, says Katie McLoughlin THEY might be comfy, but when it comes to impressing your better half this Valentine’s Day, those novelty boxers and old grey Y-fronts in the style of Rhys Ifans in Notting Hill - just won’t cut it. So if you’re looking to be lucky in love this February 14 it’s time to take a leaf out of Christiano Ronaldo’s book, who’s the new face of Emporio Armani Underwear, and invest in some stylish smalls that make you look and feel fabulous (posing optional!). WEARING specs has been cool for quite some time now. We’ve seen all kinds of eyewear trends come and go from flimsy rimless frames to more rectangular shapes with thick chunky sides. But Chris Fitton, owner of Optimark designer opticians on Bold Street, says frames for men are about to get bigger and bolder in a Geek chic kind of way. “We’re backtracking optically as the 70s styles are big here at the moment, think Michael Caine.” Chris, who has over 20 years in the ophthalmic industry, advises people to invest in different pairs of glasses: “In Europe, people have different pairs for different occasions as they can really change a look from business to casual or glamorous. “An elegant lady would not walk the dog in the same pair of glasses she’d go to a cocktail party in!” And he prides himself on providing a real eclectic mix of frames to reflect the cosmopolitan clientele passing through Bold Street. He says: “Bold Street is full of colourful, artistic people, all different nationalities. We try to reflect this by stocking ranges from exclusive designers such as EyeDC to Efva Attling and in the relaxed decor in the shop - we have slouchy settees and display works of art by local artists.” And he’s eager to lead rather than follow. “We don’t follow trends we think outside the box,” he adds. “We only stock 500 pieces as there’s nothing worse than finding everyone wearing the same frames. My ethos is to introduce Liverpool to something a little more experimental and to have the confidence to wear what suits their own style and personality rather than following fashion.” Chris applies this ethos to his own style. “My style is very eclectic. I’ll mix suited and Saville Row with a busted pair of jeans from Dolce and Gabbana,” he explains. “I like to wear exclusive pieces. I wear a lot of Dsquared2. The quality is fantastic and they only make a small number of each design. They are the catwalk people to watch.” “My favourite clothes shops in Liverpool are Cricket and Flannels, however, Top Shop, and River Island have nailed it this season. Every high street store has one or two pieces each season which are of amazing quality these are the ones to invest your money in,” Chris advises. But how do we know which these are? “It comes with years of interest and experience,” he smiles. Optimark Opticians is based at 72 Bold Street, telephone 0151 7076866 or email optimark@hotmail.co.uk

Health & beauty STYLES AHEAD

STUCK in a bit of a hair-style rut? Then 2010 already has a number of key trends that are sure to get you noticed, for all the right reasons! We caught up with owners of Williams & Coburn Hair Company on Aigburth Road, Cheryl Cockburn and Kelly Williams, to find out the trends to come. “With so much attention paid to hair styles and hair cuts, hair colour is often looked at last. But this year’s hair colour trends include peroxide blonde giving you a striking look for the summer, and best of all, there are a number of ways to style it,” says Cheryl

Knead To Unwind Emma Thompson experiences a deep tissue body massage

TREATMENT REVIEW

“If peroxide blonde isn’t for you then golden blonde, which doesn’t have the extreme white blonde colouring, is also going to be big,” she adds. “This spring and summer we will see plenty of soft or spiral curls. You can achieve these by using a low side parting then slicking back from the parting over to one side, loosely draping curls over the shoulder. Try using Bumble & Bumble Gellac or L’Oreal tecni.art Pli and gripping your hair into place using pins.

“Braids, hair twists, top knots and chignons are this year’s updos using Bumble & Bumble does it all, or L’Oreal tecni.art Air Fix to create the looks” Kelly adds: “The biggest ‘hoorah’ for hair trend in 2010 the pixie cut is back but now it’s updated with a long fringe! Although if all this seems too fashion victim/fashion faux then all these looks can be tailored to every age, shape or suitability.” Visit the salon at 690 Aigburth Road, L19 0NY or call 0151 427 6333. www.williamsandcoburnhairco mpany.co.uk to find out how to achieve the latest styles.

I’M not one to treat myself to the tranquil settings of a beauty spa too often, apart from the odd eyelash tint and leg wax, as I always feel I need a reason! So what better excuse than that of a hectic Christmas and a very cold start to the year, not to mention a niggling shoulder that seems to reappear from time to time? With Ark Spa located in the Raddison Blu just a stone’s throw away from my work, I booked in for an hour’s full body massage – well, if you’re going to treat yourself you might as well do it properly! Having never been for a full body massage before, I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive about baring all. But Annmarie, my beauty therapist for the hour, was quick to put my worries at ease, firstly checking whether I’d ever had a massage and then explaining what the process would be. Thankfully I wasn’t on show, instead draped in fresh white towels. With atmospheric lighting, well-placed candles and relaxing sounds being piped into the tranquil room, my luxury deep tissue muscle massage began. Using a range of Elemis essential oils,

Annmarie started a deep rhythmic pressure massage on my arms and shoulders leading right down to my fingers, ensuring a thorough massage to each area. On to the front of my legs, here Annmarie simply moved back one side of the towel making sure I remained warm and comfortable throughout. By now I’d forgotten all about the stresses of work and was completely enjoying my foot massage. I wasn’t sure whether I’d end up bruised from a deep tissue massage rather than relaxed but I couldn’t be more wrong. Annmarie, who’s been a massage therapist for three years and a beauty therapist for one year, performed soft sweeping motions followed by small circular movements down my thighs and legs. Time to turn over, again my dignity kept intact as Annmarie lifted the towels as a ‘curtain’ so I could lie on my front with ease. Starting with the back of my legs then moving up to my back and shoulders, Annmarie checked whether I had any back issues I wanted her to work on. A soothing touch was the hot towels placed on my back before she began the

SIMON SAYS... Get rid of your love handles for Valentine’s Day… IT’S no secret that when we’re comfortable in a relationship, we tend to pile on the pounds as we swap workouts at the gym for cosy nights in and romantic meals out. So whether you’re all loved up and want to get back to your former glory, or you’re a singleton keen to reinvent yourself for Valentine’s Day, Synergy Fitness Camps can help. Founded by Simon Whitnall and his team of experienced personal trainers, the hour-long camps incorporate a blend of 3D functional training, stretching and body conditioning. Simon and his team focus on the art of movement by using various lunging, power bags, free weights and squats and push-ups to help you get back in shape without so much as going near a treadmill or cross-trainer. Simon says: “I can understand that at different stages in our lives, our relationships may affect our lifestyle, but with healthy eating and exercise in moderation, our weight should not fluctuate beyond the odd

pound here and there. I’ve put together a few key exercises that will banish the love handles for good. “Another alternative is for couples to exercise together, this is an excellent method to shape up and many studies have proven it can increase the chances of sticking to a workout programme by up to 90%!” To banish those love handles, Simon recommends: ● Exercise one: Abdominal matrix: Three repetitions alternating each arm, three different positions with each foot forward. You can tweak this one by having a longer stride, going faster or using a heavier weight. This is a great way of flattening your stomach. ● Exercise two: Forward lunges with reach forward – Repeat ten times, alternating to each side. As soon as you reach forward you stretch and tone your back muscles, bottom, hamstrings and calves. Incorporate small dumbbells if you feel able.

IN 2008, Liverpool got cultured, in 2009 we went green for the Year of the Environment, and now the city is set to get fit, as 2010 is the Year of Health and Wellbeing. To launch the new Year of Health and Wellbeing, a Festival of Health and Activity is being held on Sunday, February 7 at Wavertree Tennis Centre. Taking place between 10.30-4.30pm, the event is free and everyone’s invited to come along and try their luck on a trampoline, scale a climbing wall or take a guided tour of the park with the Liverpool Park Rangers. Alternatively, if you’re feeling a little less adventurous, why not treat yourself to a free neck massage or take part in the Tai Chi demonstrations? There’s also plenty to keep the kids entertained too, as younger visitors to the Festival of Health and Activity will have the chance to enjoy arts and crafts, storytelling, bracelet making, X-bikes, golf and much more. Turquoise on trend

Cage pendant light by Diesel for Foscarini, £356, from Utility

Get the blues with this year’s hot hue INTERIOR bloggers the world over are waxing lyrical about the hot shade for 2010 - turquoise! This interest in the cool yet vibrant aquamarine shade, inspired by gems, followed the announcement from industry experts, Pantone, that turquoise would be its ‘Colour of the Year.’ So expect to see the blue hue displayed prominently in fashion and homes for the next 12 months. Keeping up with design trends can be a costly business, but you needn’t completely transform your home to be in interior vogue. Simply adding a wallpaper with a turquoise

pattern, investing in some new bed linen, cushions and curtains, or painting a door will do the trick or you could easily add a few turquoise accessories which add a splash of colour to neutral floors and furniture. Colour can have a really strong affect on your senses but luckily turquoise conjures images of tropical lagoons and is fresh and revitalising, whilst calming and soothing the senses.

Star of 60 Minute Makeover and home expert Craig Phillips

Pink Scottie Dog with Flower Coat, £5.95, from Dotcomgiftshop

With a new series of 60 Minute Makeover back on our screens, Sarah Hooley catches up with resident building expert Craig Phillips to unearth the latest home trends.... BETWEEN starring in countless TV DIY shows and spending over 20 years in the construction industry, it's fair to say that Craig Phillips knows a thing or two about home design. So who better to ask for a spot of expert advice? Whether you fancy freshening up your existing décor or want to give your home a complete overhaul, Craig says that spring is the perfect time to dig out those paintbrushes and get your hands dirty. A bricklayer by trade, Craig shot to fame (and the nation's hearts) after winning the first series of Big Brother in 2000 and since then has gone on to present and star in a number of TV programmes, including the ever-popular 60 Minute Makeover. He advises: “Coming into spring, sometimes the outside of your house can look a bit shabby as it gets a battering in winter months. So if there's any masonry brickwork, start by giving it a quick coat of paint and a lick of varnish along the windows. “Decking's also a very common and inexpensive way to create a completely new look for your garden and inside the home, people start trying to brighten the place up again. Once everyone sees the sun come out, people naturally want to bring the light in and if you're looking for a quick make-over think about using lighter colours and furnishings.” As for interior trends, Craig predicts that there are an exciting range of stunning furnishings and accessories to transform even the plainest of rooms into a shining example of style this spring. From bold, stripy carpets, minimalistic furniture and big mirrors to turquoise and high quality wall paper used on accent walls, there's something to suit every home.

Craig enthuses: “I've noticed that stripy carpets are coming back in a lot. Where there was once a big trend for floral carpets in the 80s, followed by plain carpets in the 90s and early noughties, I'm now seen a lot of designers interpreting deep, thick stripes into their carpets which I think looks really good.” Home improvements don't have to break the bank though, and if you're still watching the pennies Craig has some good advice: “A new coat of paint on your walls and ceilings is a quick, easy way to brighten things up – and you can do it yourself so there's no need to bring a tradesman in.” Even buying some new soft furnishings can help. He added: "We've done it ourselves on some of the makeovers. You might have a sturdy, solid couch that's looking a bit worn, but you can spruce it up with a wrap throw and some stylish cushions.” So what would be Craig's top tip for budding DIY-ers? “Probably the best advice I can give anyone is don't be afraid to ask for help and don't feel silly if you don't know what's what. “There are so many products out there that it can be confusing, so just ask.” For those that fancy brushing up their home improvement skills, Craig's also due to launch his popular Chix and Mortar DIY courses (specifically designed for the DIY challenged) in Liverpool later this year. So shake off those winter blues and follow Craig's easy advice on how to wake up your home this spring.

Frank with director Andy de Emmony on location filming Framed in Blaenau Ffestiniog

Frankly speaking Peter Grant catches up with award-winning wordsmith and all-round nice guy, Frank Cottrell Boyce RANK Cottrell Boyce says that 2009 was a very productive year for him. The man who has written for the big and small screen, theatre and for the nation’s bookshelves, is looking ahead to an even more successful 2010. For TV, he wrote for Brookside, Coronation Street, A Woman’s Guide to Adultery and last year, the powerful Holocaust drama, God on Trial. He has written for national newspapers, the Everyman and Playhouse and is now a best-selling author. His film work stretches back to 1990 and includes Butterfly Kiss, Hilary and Jackie - filmed in his beloved Liverpool - 24 Hour Party People and Millions. Yet softly-spoken Frank is always modest about his achievements allowing his work to speak volumes. He has a reputation for being an allround nice guy. Success has not changed him. I know from personal experience. When I moved into my first house in St

F

BEST OF LIVERPOOL

Michael’s in the Hamlet I was rushing around getting this and that. I bumped into Frank walking down Lark Lane. I told him I was moving in and was nervous about my first home. He asked where it was. I told him and he parted with a "good luck" message. A few hours later I arrived with my keys and there - on the doorstep - was a ribboned bottle of champagne wishing me all the luck in the world in my new home. I never forgot that and I’ll never forget Frank. He says he won’t forget the many highlights of '09. The BBC showed a dramatisation of his children’s book Framed. And he has been out and about putting something back into the industry where he has made his name. Frank tells Best of Liverpool: "Framed got a massive audience, but the downside was that all the actors had South Walian accents - even though the story was set in Snowdonia.

"I'm a dead man in Betws y Coed." Reflecting on the ongoing legacy of the city’s Capital of Culture in 2008, Frank adds: "I think the most important thing that happened in 2008 was that some of the city's own institutions - the orchestra, theatres, museums and galleries reconnected with the community. We won't know the fruits of that for years yet." Frank, 50, was born in Rainhill, and now lives in North Liverpool with wife Denise and their seven children. He is an avid supporter of one evergrowing literary organisation, which is spreading the word about books and the written word. Says Frank, winner of the prestigious Carnegie Medal for his children's book Millions: "One of the best examples of reconnecting is The Reader organisation which has managed to use books to put some of the most marginal people in society right in the centre of the stage. "It's a scheme being copied across the

country and the whole region should be very proud of it." Oxford graduate Frank has put his famous voice where his mouth is to be part of one of last year’s biggest-selling spectacles - the high profile 'Penny Readings' at St George’s Hall. "It is The Reader Organisation’s flagship and I had to follow Alexei Sayle on that famous stage where Dickens himself read," smiles Frank. "I had to try and be funny after Alexei!"

“The city always had a big pool of film and TV talent. Clapperboard is a great vehicle for putting those talented individuals to work for the good of our children,” he says, shaking his head at the memory. Another creative success in the city that gets Frank’s thumbs up is Maureen Sinclair’s mould-breaking Clapperboard project, which encourages film making by school children who are mentored by fellow industry key players. “The city always had a big pool of film and TV talent. Clapperboard is a great vehicle for putting those talented individuals to work for the good of our children,” he says. As for his own work, Frank is clearly excited about one future project. “I'm working on a film about the Homeless World Cup. There are versions of the Big Issue in 50 countries now and most of them run some sort of Street Soccer League. “There is an annual World Cup competition. This year it was in Milan. We went and it was amazing. We're hoping to film at the next one, which is in Rio next September.” Screenwriter, novelist – there is no limit to Frank’s talents. So has he ever thought of penning his autobiography? He puts his hand up as if stopping a taxi. “NO! “That would involve writing about my family and friends and there's a definite Omerta on that for me.” Finally, “Frank of all the awards you've won which is the most important and why?” I ask. The wordsmith smiles widely and gets whimsical. “I got an American award called The Christopher. It says on it: “For Lighting a Candle instead of cursing the dark.’ “I'd love that to be my epitaph. But’ I'd also want to have earned it.” Frankie, you have . . .

STAGE SET FOR A LEGEND Katie McLoughlin talks to playwright, musician and author, Willy Russell AS the man behind such iconic films and plays as Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers and Educating Rita, Willy Russell needs little introduction. World renowned, the 62-year-old is a legend in the theatre world - despite leaving school with just one O’Level. Initially writing songs, which were performed at local folk clubs, Willy’s first successful play was John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bert, which ran at the Everyman for eight weeks in 1974, before moving to the West End. Since then he has enjoyed international success and received countless industry accolades, including two Tony awards and four Laurence Olivier Awards, plus Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award nominations. On February 8, Willy will take part in the first of a series of Clapperboard Presents events to raise funds for the Liverpool-based Clapperboard Youth Project, which helps young people to get creative through workshops, film making projects and by supporting new writers. Taking place at FACT’s Picturehouse on Wood Street, the February 8 event will include a screening of Dancin’ Thru The Dark plus a question and answer session with the critically acclaimed writer. Projects like Clapperboard are invaluable to youngsters looking to break into the world of film, theatre or writing. “If I was remotely still young myself, I know I would be knocking on Clapperboard’s doors and trying to be involved,” says Willy. “Opportunities like this just didn’t exist when I was young.” However the Whiston-born writer believes it’s important that youngsters find their own path and write in a style that comes naturally to them. He says: “You can’t follow in anyone’s footsteps, you can only find your own way. "If you’ve got the determination and talent you will do it. The most important thing is to have the opportunity and get on with trying to do the job. A style will emerge because style is what you have as an individual - it’s not something that you can set out to have.

“I wrote in the style which I instinctively wanted to write - I’m not one of those writers like Alan Bennett who listens to people on the bus and writes about real life. I try to live my life but unconsciously things seep in through the pores. With Shirley Valentine, for example, I didn’t set out to write about anyone I’d actually met, because then it would only really have relevance for Liverpudlians.” Engaging the audience is hugely important to Willy. He says: “One of the things I find immensely satisfying is when I watch plays like Shirley Valentine, Blood Brothers or Educating Rita in Melbourne, Korea or Tokyo, and they’re played as though they’re set in Liverpool - but in different languages and cultures - and still they have massive meaning for people in all different places all over the world.” In recent years Willy has done a lot of work with Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre, which he has particularly enjoyed. He says: “It has no subsidy every single show is funded by what’s taken at the box office - and my God does that focus the people that work there. "It’s a relatively small operation and the people that work there are really committed. There’s something about the energy and commitment at a place like that, that I just respond to - it’s really living by the seat of your pants!” Following on from the success of Our Day Out at the Royal Court last year, Willy is busy working on rewrites of the musical, which is returning to the Roe Street theatre in August as well as casting for Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita, which are opening in London later this year. I guess all the world's a stage for Willy. ● Clapperboard Presents: Willy Russell in Conversation takes place in the Picturehouse@FACT at 7pm, February 8. Tickets are available from FACT’s box office, priced at £10, which includes a complimentary after-show drink in Alma de Cuba. All proceeds go to the Clapperboard Youth Project.

Connie Lush FRESH from a special gig in the city on Boxing Night, Liverpool-born singer/songwriter, Connie Lush, has a very busy year ahead, with performances planned throughout the UK, Holland, France and Belgium. With a wealth of prestigious UK awards to her name, blues-legend Connie is now increasingly recognised in Europe, especially in France, where she was named European Singer of the Year in the 2002 French Blues Trophies awards.

Rob Harnetty CREAM’S newest resident DJ, local lad Rob Harnetty, or Rob H to give him his DJ name, is a rising star in the city’s club scene and beyond. Trance, house and techno DJ Rob, from Prescot, started DJing at the tender age of 16 after being inspired by the likes of Paul Van Dyk and Tiesto. His talent soon caught the eye of dance supremos Cream, who signed the 22-year-

old as a resident early last year. Since then Rob enjoyed DJing at Cream Amnesia in Ibiza, Creamfields and Gatecrasher, and played on the same bill as Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Eddie Halliwell amongst others. Chantal Barton LETTING the public know what’s going on when a herd of Superlambananas and Penguins descend on the city is no easy task, but for Chantal Barton, communications manager at Signature Creative, it’s all in a day’s work. Chantal, who’s originally from Ormskirk, managed the PR and media campaigns, along with much of the copywriting for souvenir guides, books and the website for both Go Superlambananas and Go Penguins. Working on two such much-loved parts of Liverpool’s Capital of Culture celebrations, was an amazing experience for Chantal. She says: “To hear everybody talking about the

Superlambananas with big smiles on all of their faces every time I stepped into the street was just fantastic.” Following on from the success of Go Superlambananas and Go Penguins, Chantal will be looking after the PR campaign for Chester’s Rhino Mania event next summer. She says: “It’s similar to Go Penguins, and the rhinos are incredibly impressive in size and stature, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

Chinese New Year

Photograph: Andrew Teebay

FEBRUARY 10

The Year of the Tiger Katie McLoughlin discovers February 14 isn’t just for romantics this year...

IT’S five weeks into 2010 and although you may only just have recovered from New Year’s Eve, it’s time to dig out your party hat again for Chinese New Year, which takes place on February 14 this year. Unlike the Western calendar, the Chinese lunar calendar is cyclical, and repeats every 12 years. 2010 marks the start of the Year of the Tiger, the third year in the cycle. Those born in the Year of the Tiger are said to be sensitive yet powerful types who think about things deeply and may often find it hard to make decisions. Just as you might have planned for a whole new you on January 1, Chinese New Year is also a time for new beginnings, and the weeks leading up to the event are filled with preparations, symbollic customs and superstitions. Houses are cleaned from top-to-bottom to sweep away any traces of bad luck from the past year; windows and door frames are given a fresh lick of red paint (red is viewed as auspicious and said to frighten away evil spirits) and decorations are put

up around the house to signify everything the family is hoping for in the coming year, such as prosperity, longevity and happiness. Even the dragon which traditionally dances its way along Nelson Street is packed with symbolism, as it’s believed to bring success and good luck in the coming year. As you would expect in a city that’s home to one of Europe’s oldest Chinese communities, Chinese New Year celebrations are not-to-be missed in Liverpool. This year’s festivities will take place between 11am and 4pm on Sunday, February 21 in the streets around the Chinese arch on Nelson Street. Always a huge crowd puller, the colourful event will include special firecracker performances, Tai Chi demonstrations, dancing dragons, unicorns and lions parading along Nelson Street and Berry Street, plus traditional perfomances at the Wah Sing Chinese Community Centre on Duke Street and the Pagoda on Henry Street.

KWO-TA CHICKEN SOMETHING of an institution in Chinatown, Yuet Ben Restaurant first opened its doors in 1968. Serving up authentic northern Chinese cuisine, the Upper Duke Street restaurant was founded by Yuh Ho Yau, who learnt his culinary skills in Dalian and worked in restaurants in Hong Kong, Beijing and New York before settling in Liverpool. To help you celebrate Chinese New Year in style, the renowned restaurant has shared its recipe for Kwo-ta Chicken:

BEST OF LIVERPOOL

INGREDIENTS (serves two) One large chicken breast (skinned and de-boned), Corn flour or plain flour, Two eggs beaten, Four tablespoons oil for frying, Four tablespoons chicken stock, Two tablespoons rice wine or sherry, Two cloves garlic, One spring onion, One slice ginger, 1/2 teaspoon sugar, 1/4 teaspoon salt.

METHOD 1. Slice chicken into three or four slices, coat them in flour before dipping them in a bowl of beaten egg. 2. Heat oil in wok or frying pan and then fry the coated slices of chicken on both sides. Once cooked, remove and cut them up into bitesize pieces before placing on serving dish. 3. Prepare sauce with stock and wine. Add in the garlic (sliced), spring onion (cut into inch long pieces), ginger (shreds), sugar and salt. Bring to boil and finally pour over the chicken. 4. Serve with plain boiled rice so that the fragrance of the garlic, spring onion, ginger and wine sauce can be savoured and not masked by a stronger flavoured complement.

LOVE @ the Docks Legendary lovers grace Liverpool’s favourite landmark

LOVE will be in the air and on the water at the Albert Dock on Valentine’s Day. Visitors will see legendary lovers from Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton to John and Yoko at the romantic setting of Liverpool’s famous landmark. “The dock is such an evocative setting, with so many stories set in its walls, and especially at twilight there is a magical atmosphere around the water,” says Cathy Roberts, events liaison for Albert Dock Business Tenants Association. Cathy, a storyteller who lives on a tugboat in the dock, adds: “We have such a great variety of water-facing restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and attractions, not to mention a fabulous tall ship, we couldn’t resist the chance to revel in the season of romance. “We are match-making famous couples with individual premises – many of which were already putting together special offers for Valentine’s Day. “The inspiration came from Nauticalia, where they had on display a reproduction of the linked ring Nelson exchanged with Emma – their story of love conquering is the stuff of true melodrama. “Looking around the dock, it wasn’t long before other lovers could be imagined – John and Yoko at The Beatles Story, Napoleon and Josephine at La

Crepe Rit, Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, for whom the Taj Mahal was created, at Spice Lounge. We even have Fred and Wilma Flintstone at What’s Cooking?!” To promote the event, we enlisted the help of ex-Brookside actors Dean Sullivan and Suzanne Collins who willingly agreed to dress up as lovers Nelson and Lady Hamilton. Donning their fabulously authentic costumers courtesy of Mr Benn’s fancy dress hire in Birkenhead, the pair got into character posing by tall ship, Zebu. Mersey Heritage Trust gave us kind permission to photograph the spectacular vessel which is berthed in the Albert Dock and is often used for pirate reinactments. The Baltic trader cargo vessel was built in 1938 and was rebuilt by Merseyside volunteers. Suzanne, who is looking forward to playing the part of Lady Hamilton on the day, says: “I will be taking up residence at Nauticalia. My character was the mistress of Lord Nelson and they had the romance of the century.” Nelson and Emma fell in love while both married to other people. Emma nursed a battle-weary Nelson, and though they spent many years apart, their love

was insurmountable. Any divorce would have brought disgrace on both parties, so the couple exchanged love letters under the pseudonyms of Mr and Mrs Thompson. They had one daughter, Horatia, and eventually lived together at Merton before Nelson succumbed at Trafalgar. Before his death he wrote to the government urging that the nation look after Lady Hamilton if he failed to return. This request was ignored and Emma died in poverty on the continent. Dean explains: “The event will help people to get to know the docks. I remember many years ago, when no one came here, all the windows were smashed in the dock buildings. There were plans to knock it down but luckily it was saved and restored to its former glory. Now it’s one of the biggest tourist attractions in Europe.” Suzanne pipes up. “I love it. I remember coming down with my school friends to watch Fred jumping around on his weather map. “I also love all the restaurants and bars here. I had my 30th at the Pan American. I love Baby Cream too. It’s a real gem.” So, for love, tears, intrigue and inspiration, come and celebrate romance in style at the Albert Dock this Valentine’s Day.

If you’re looking for Fastlove . . . A recipe for lovers Spice up your love life with this romantic recipe from executive chef, Gary Valentine, at the Radisson Blu hotel Spiced king prawn linguine with a citrus butter sauce INGREDIENTS: ❤ 6 king prawns (unshelled) ❤ 100g linguine pasta (linguine is narrow and flat and means little tongues in Italian) ❤ 10g of garlic cloves peeled and finely chopped ❤ 10g of shallots finely diced ❤ 10g of red chilli finely chopped ❤ 10g of butter in two square cubes ❤ 10g of finely chopped coriander ❤ 2 table spoons of white wine ❤ a fresh lime METHOD: ❤ Cook your linguine pasta in a pan of ready boiled water for 10 minutes. ❤ Prepare your garlic, shallots, chilli and coriander. ❤ Cook your king prawns in a heated pan for two - three minutes depending on the size of the prawns, splash the white wine into the pan and reduce until the prawns are cooked. Remove the prawns from the pan. ❤ Add your chopped garlic, shallots and chilli into the same pan and cook for one – two minutes then add the butter to make a sauce. ❤ When the linguine is cooked, drain the pasta and add to your sauce. ❤ Finally add the juice from the lime and coriander to your pasta and serve. ❤ Best served with a chilled Soave Classico to balance out the acidity of the lime. ❤The Radisson Blue restaurant is offering a special Valentine’s Day menu at £29 per person for three courses including a Benvenutti glass of Prosecco. The offer is available between 6pm and 9.30pm, Friday, February 12 and Sunday, February 14. Call 0151 966 1500 for more information.

IF you've yet to find your soul mate then don't miss the Fastlove Valentine's Singles Party. The event will be held at Mosquito on Friday, February 12 at 7.30pm where you can meet lots of other singles. During the night, there will be numerous activities designed to help you break the ice, such as: ❤ Lock and Key: A Lock for the ladies, a key for the men - have fun finding your match! ❤ Fun Casino: Exchange 'play money' for chips and become a high roller for the night! ❤ Flirt Cards: Leave a message for anyone you fancy - and don't forget to check yours too! ❤ Speed Dating: A series of mini speeddating events will take place during the night. Or you can simply sit at the bar, chat up the other partygoers or show off your dancefloor moves! The event has been organised by Fastlove speeddating which was set up in Liverpool in 2003. Event promoter Ajaz Iqbal says that speed dating is the ideal way for singletons to meet each other. "I’m not sure how long it would take to meet 25 single women normally, let alone go on a date with them! "This is a fun way to meet people and have a great night out in the process, as well as giving you a great opportunity to meet the love of your life. "To date, we've heard of over 50 couples getting married after meeting at one of our events and countless long-term relationships.” If you decide to take part in speed dating, Ajaz has some top

tips on how to succeed: ● Be Prepared: First impressions count, so put your best foot forward. This doesn't mean ballgowns and tuxedos, but make sure you're well scrubbed and wearing your best pulling outfit. ● Meet and Greet: The key to your first contact is to make sure you don't offend - you can't win someone's affection in the first few seconds, but you can certainly lose it. A friendly smile and a handshake are good enough: no kissing, no personal space invading! ● Talking the talk: Speed dating is about conversation, not interrogation - you're trying to get an idea about what sort of person you're talking to rather than a potted biography. Keep it light and breezy for now; the heavy stuff (sex, love, wallet size etc.) can wait until your first proper date. ● Relax: Nervous is not a good look, so do whatever it takes to at least appear relaxed and confident. Obviously we wouldn't recommend getting hammered before a speed dating session - but if a small drink helps to settle the nerves then so be it. ● Afterplay: During and after the session you'll have breaks for drinks, and this is an ideal time to catch up with that date who you'd like to get to know better. Don't be too pushy, just casually ask if it would be ok to join them for a drink. If they like you they'll accept; if not, move onto the next one! For more details on the event visit www.fastlovespeeddating.co.uk or call 08456 442083.

Say it with flowers Score some brownie points this Valentine’s Day! WITH Valentines Day fast approaching, is it still enough for men to treat the one they love to the traditional red roses? Men are under increasing pressure than ever to surprise their loved ones at this time of the year, and the standard traditional gifts are out of the window, with more men opting for a more unique choice. Fishlocks florist, based on Castle Street, is leading the way with a one-off collection including a diamante covered rose box, lily hand ties, and other funky arrangements that can be made to your taste. Owner, Richard Moore, said there’s a growing trend to ditch traditional bouquets: “Although the original dozen red roses is still our biggest selling arrangement, we’ve definitely seen an increase in requests for more distinctive Valentines flowers. “Maybe there’s some truth in the theory that modern women expect more thought in to their gifts? That’s why we offer bouquets made to individual needs, hopefully we are helping the male population of Liverpool earn some extra brownie points at home.” Fishlocks also offer flowers for women to buy for men, with various luxury chocolates for men and the popular single rose arrangements. HIDDEN GEMS SPEKE HALL A fabulous place to visit in Speke is a Tudor house which is one of the most outstanding examples of a timber-framed building. Dating back to 1490, Speke Hall is owned by The National Trust and contains lots of intriguing interior secrets, such as the secret priest's hole and 'thunderbox' toilet. Located on the banks of the Mersey, the estate also features fine Victorian gardens, woodland walks and, during the summer, a giant garden maze. Smell, see and hear the history of this extraordinary house with the new Sensory Trail. For more information call 0844 800 4799 or visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk

A New Era I COHEN & SON LTD This traditional family jewellers in the heart of Garston is a real Aladdin’s Cave of all things sparkly. It’s a great place to find that something special for a loved one, whether it’s their birthday, christening, anniversary or Bar Mitzvah – or even for that special moment when you are going to ‘pop the question’ there is a huge selection of diamond rings. Indeed, the friendly staff who recently celebrated the business’ 50th birthday, offer gifts galore from watches, to clocks, photo frames and ornaments. Visit the shop at 35 St Mary’s Road, Garston, Liverpool L19 or telephone 0151 427 6031. DAMON’S Damon’s diner at the old Speke airport site offers the best steaks and ribs in town. The diner specialises in American with dishes ranging from award-winning barbecue ribs and its speciality onion loaf to steaks, seafood, gourmet burgers, sourdough sandwiches and much more. It offers a spacious and comfortable lounge where guests can enjoy cocktails and drinks before and after their meal enjoying the Hollywood themed decor. What’s more, you can eat for free on your birthday if you take ID such as your passport or birth certificate. Damon's can be found at The Old Airport, Speke Boulevard, Speke. Tel: 0151 494 3322.

GARSTON and Speke are two up and coming areas in South Liverpool which are being revitalised with a number of exciting regeneration schemes. The village of Garston can be found on the banks of the River Mersey and has a proud heritage. A small dock was first built at Garston in 1793. Today, Garston is a major shipping and container port handling all kinds of cargoes from aggregrates to steel coil, due to its excellent transport links. Despite the thriving port, the area has suffered from a period of economic deprivation. But fortunes are a changing in Garston which is being regenerated to improve housing, create new jobs, assist local businesses and improve the quality of life for locals. A number of new housing developments have sprung up which are all helping to inject a new vibrancy and optism into the area with young couples and families taking advantage of schemes for first time buyers. The village enjoys a myriad of local amenties and shops and on Fridays it plays host to a flourishing weekly market and there are a number of local alehouses, including the newly refurbished gastro pub, The Stables, and the legendary Woodcutters Social Club. Garston boasts an excellent leisure centre with a fitness suite, 25m pool and offering a huge range of sports and leisure activities, as well as a wellstocked library. It is also home to

Liverpool South Parkway railway station and will soon benefit from a £15.5m state-of-the-art new NHS Treatment Centre. To encourage people to take interest and pride in their neighbourhood, a number of community projects have been created, such as the Artistic Republic of Garston which transformed a disused Edwardian school on Wellington Street into Garston Embassy. Youth project Interchill, on St Mary’s Road, recently worked with Hurrican Films to make a film based on their life experiences. The feature film Under The Mud was played at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival where it received huge critical acclaim. The film’s title eludes to the ‘Under the Bridge’ area of Garston where people were nick named the Mud Men as during harder times they would go out on the sand banks and collect coal. A little known fact is that you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the Mersey Estuary from Garston, enjoying exhilerating views of Snowdonia and spotting lots of birds along the way. Moving next door to Speke, the birthplace of Paul McCartney, you’ll receive a warm welcome from the Mersey Wave - Liverpool’s answer to the Angel of the North which lights up the skies with its giant blue fins. Driving along Speke Boulevard dual carriageway towards Garston, the roundabouts are often adorned with

pieces of art, for instance, the Superlambananas. Along the Boulevard you’ll find a number of factories and business parks. Shoppingwise, you’ll find the New Mersey Shopping Park, comprising a range of popular high street stores from Boots to Marks & Spencers. One of the biggest draws to Speke is the rapidly growing Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which offers flight to many destinations, from Barcelona and Dublin to Budapest and Venice, as well as a variety of shops and restaurants and the new new Hampton by Hilton™ hotel. The airport’s original site is now home to The Crowne Plaza Hotel which has taken up residence in the stunning art deco building as well as Shop Direct Group and David Lloyd’s Leisure Centre. So if it’s been a while since you visited Garston or Speke, take a trip over there and see how things are changing.

Half term fun

HAPPY HOLIDAYS As half term looms, how will you amuse the little ones? HALF term is almost upon us which means a whole week of freedom for our children. But cabin fever can quickly set in if they get bored so it’s a good idea to line up some great days out. Luckily, Liverpool has plenty to keep little brains occupied with a wealth of family fun attractions. You could expand their grey matter with a trip to museum, catch a game of sport, get arty at a gallery, enjoy a trip on a ferry. The list is endless... Here’s some ideas of fun things to do for all ages.

WALKER ART GALLERY Unleash your youngsters’ creative sides with a trip to the Walker Art Gallery. The Gallery is home to Big Art for Little Artists a special gallery designed to introduce children up to the age of eight to art through fun activities, books, jigsaws and computers. Children can create their own art, dress up as characters from the Walker’s paintings, write their own stories, watch videos inspired by the paintings or even pose on a throne. Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Street, Liverpool, L3 8EL. Tel: 0151 478 4199, www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk

FACT Explore the world of computer games at FACT this half term. The cinema and gallery is hosting Space Invaders: Art and the Computer Game Environment until February 21, a group exhibition that brings art and gaming cultures together. From retro text-based role-playing games, to the detailed city maps found in the latest Grand Theft Auto, Space Invaders draws on these sources of artistic inspiration and explores the increasingly blurred boundaries between video-game spaces and real spaces. FACT, 88 Wood Street, Liverpool L1 4DQ. Tel: 0151 707 4464 www.fact.co.uk LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL Introduce your little ones to the awesome spectacle that is Liverpool Cathedral. During half term there will be an Icons in Transformation exhibition from February 15 – 21, where children can come and explore the Cathedral. On February 15 and 16, from 11am to 3pm, at the Education Studio, kids can come and make their own icon having visited the exhibition. Liverpool Cathedral, St James’ Mount, Liverpool, L1 7AZ. Tel: 0151 709 6271, www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk TATE LIVERPOOL This half term, kids from three to 12 can take part in the Tate Explorers experience. They can visit the Explorers Base Camp trolley to collect a map or activity bag which will take them on a journey of discovery to see, feel and learn about the art in the gallery.

KNOWSLEY SAFARI PARK Your cheeky monkeys will love a trip to Knowsley Safari Park where they can view all kinds of animals from African wild dogs to lions, tigers, elephants, rhinos, meerkats, sea lions and much more. If you drive through, the baboons often climb over your car so you can see them really close and watch their funny antics.
