Editor’s letter SUMMER may have been a bit of a wash-out thus far, so here’s hoping June brings us some sun! This month there’s a whole host of outdoor events to enjoy and quite frankly they’re not the same without a bit of sun. So, call it wishful thinking, but we’ve got everything you need to enjoy a little alfresco dining on pages 18 and 19, from flaming good barbecues to picnic hampers, patio furniture and sun loungers. Sticking with the summer theme, on page 21 we’ve got perfect picnic recipes and a twist on the classic Pimm’s cocktail from Pan-Asian restaurant Matou. To help inspire your holiday shopping on pages 6, 7 and 8, we have selected sizzling summer styles that no holiday suitcase should be without (just don’t blame us if you get charged for excess baggage!) June also signals the start of festival season, so if you’ve not yet decided where to invest your hard-earned ticket money, check out our shortlist of summer festivals on page 29. Of course there’s more to festival season than music festivals and on page 28 we bring you a snapshot of the city’s first international photography festival and meet a
Merseyside snapper who has turned a passion for photography into a career. This month also sees the return of the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament to Calderstones Park. Liverpool’s equivalent of Wimbledon, the event features exhibition matches from legendary sporting stars such as Martina Hingis, Greg Rusedski and Martina Navratilova to name just a few. Check out page 12 for a round up of all of the matches, plus we have a competition to win tickets to the event. As well as playing host to visiting talent, Liverpool has no shortage of home-grown stars and on page 16, Hollyoaks actress, Alex Fletcher, talks about life after Brookside and what it feels like to return to the Childwall studios where her career began. Whilst on page 17 we catch up with Josh Bolt, a gifted young actor from Halewood. Last but not least, this month is Father’s Day and if you’re stuck for ideas about what to get your dad, check out page 11 as we have more ideas for days out and gift experiences than you can shake a proverbial golf club at. Enjoy!

Talk of town THOUSANDS ATTEND LIGHT NIGHT Photo: Mark McNulty
LIVERPOOL’S nocturnal celebration, Light Night, was a massive success as thousands of switched-on cultural night owls enjoyed the annual arts and culture festival on May 13. The festival, which took place from 5pm until very
late, featured 97 events across 50 venues including sell-out evening tours of the historic Old Dock; an atmospheric Candle Lit Labyrinth at the Art and Design Academy; live music experiments at Tate Liverpool and much, much more. Charlotte Corrie from Open Culture, producers of Light Night says: “We were delighted to see everybody out enjoying Liverpool’s annual Light Night. Light Night is for everyone and a great chance to see the city in a different light. The city’s cultural venues were buzzing and a fun night was really had by all.”
SAFE AND DRY A LOCAL social enterprise which teaches youngsters about the effects of drugs and crime is looking for support for a live music event it’s holding in August. Based on Dryden Street, Safe and Dry educates young people about the effects that crime and drug abuse have on their community through a mock prison experience and a performing arts theatre where youngsters watch a short play about consequences. The play features performances from Brookside actress, Suzanne Collins, and actors from her Academy of the Performing Arts, which is based at Safe and Dry’s premises. To boost awareness of the project and raise funds for struggling communities in Liverpool, Safe and Dry is holding Live Aid Unsigned on
August 6-7. The event will give local unsigned bands and youngsters who’ve taken part in the project’s music workshops a chance to perform on stage to a real audience as well as raising much-needed funds for local communities. Anyone interested in taking part or supporting the event, should call 0151 298 1200 or email info@safeanddry.org.uk

WORKING in the fashion department of C&A as a teenager, Caroline Oates could only dream that she'd one day be a designer for the stars. Yet for the 41-year-old Liverpool style-queen that's exactly what happened. The talented designer, who owns her own fashion design studio in the city centre, has long been a favourite with style-conscious shoppers in Liverpool. And, can now count Black Eyed Peas singer, Fergie, amongst her customers! The exciting news comes after Caroline received a call from a stylist to arrange an appointment at her design studio earlier this year. Little did Caroline know that the celebrity stylist was sourcing clothes for a new music video, and that one of her designs was about to be hand-picked for Fergie. Photo: Martin Birchall
The outfit in question (a pink jumpsuit) had been made by Caroline to wear herself at Aintree races but, as the designer says, "you don't say no to Fergie!" Caroline explains: "The stylist, Felicity, had heard about me through a friend of hers who is from Liverpool. When she saw the dusty pink crepe de chine jumpsuit she said that it was amazing and will be the outfit that Fergie will wear." Caroline began designing 16 years ago and says she's had a passion for fashion since her childhood. She says: "I have a big family, and as I was a child during the 70s I loved watching my sisters getting dressed up and going to discos with their hair flicked and fabulous outfits inspired by Bianca Jagger and Studio 54!" She added: "My style has really developed over the years. I have put a lot of hard work into my creativity. I believe my dresses are unique, they stand out because they are eye catching and different. My inspiration mainly comes from history of style and art, and I also really love classic films. My favourite designer of all time is Coco Chanel, I love the simplicity of her style. I like to dress my customers in my unique stylish way that I see suiting them and their personality. I don't like to follow the crowd." To see examples of Caroline's gorgeous collections, visit www.carolineoates.com

BEAUTY ON A BUDGET Emma Thompson discovers affordable, quality treatments in the heart of the city LET’S face it we’re all pretty skint these days with the price of petrol and food shopping eating through our wallets, so I thought it was time to check out some affordable beauty treatments – after all a girl can’t sacrifice everything! I booked in at The Academy Salon, which is part of Liverpool Community College, to see if you could still feel pampered at a fraction of the price of top beauty salons. Carried out by students under expert tuition, Liverpool Community College has a great variety of treatments to choose between and I opted for an Indian head massage, followed by a full facial. Having led me to the treatment room, which has curtained-off beauty beds, Laura Wilson, my level three beauty therapist, gave me a consultation, then the relaxation began as soothing music was piped into the room. Starting with an upper back massage, from my shoulder blades, Laura used a specially blended oil of juniper, patchouli and black pepper which released a relaxing aroma. Applying the right amount of pressure, the stresses of work were soon melting away as she kneaded and used various massage techniques to release the tension, from sweeping motions to continuous
pressuring up my spine to my neck. The massage moved up to my head with a more gentle rubbing technique and kneading as well as delicate ‘hair-pulling’ all invigorating my scalp and making me feel completely calmed. Laura began my facial using Matis skincare products. She gently removed any traces of make-up then a cool cleansing lotion was applied, giving a refreshing feel. Next, Laura used an exfoliating scrub which was delicately rubbed into my skin, then taken off with a cloth using soft, sweeping movements, removing any Following the exfoliating scrub, a hydrating skin mask was brushed on and, while this was soaking in, I was pampered even more with a wonderful hand and arm massage, where once again an invigorating oil was used - filling the room with a lovely aroma. My face mask was removed and a deep moisturising cream was applied, leaving my skin feeling refreshed, soft and smooth. Laura was a testament to the Academy students’ talent and I felt I received the same high level of service and treatment as I would anywhere else, plus at only £5 for each of my treatments I wouldn’t hesitate to go back. Maybe I’ll check out the hair salon or nail bar next time!
Where is it? The Academy is at Liverpool Community College in Tradewind Square, just off Duke Street in Liverpool city centre.
What does it do? A range of treatments by students from hairdressing, colouring to pamper packages, artificial nails, tanning, facials, body massage, Crystal Clear micro-dermabrasion and much more.

Father’s Day
JUNE 11
A DAY TO REMEMBER... Make this Father’s Day one dad will never forget. Paul Baker shows you how MAKE a note on your calendar for June – important date, Sunday, June 19 – Father’s Day. I always remember Father’s Day because it tends to fall about a week after my birthday. But remembering it isn’t the hard part – finding a suitable gift is! While dads are pretty easy to buy for – they’re more than happy to receive a bottle of Scotch or some iTunes vouchers – getting them something a bit different each year is tough. So, here at Best of Liverpool, we’ve been wracking our brains to find some of the best gift experiences and days out for your dad to enjoy. MERSEY TUNNEL Photo: Elaine Boundy
WHY not give your dad the chance to explore beneath the Mersey waves on the Liverpool Queensway Mersey Tunnel Tour? It offers a unique behind the scenes tour where you can see the control room in operation, go beneath the city and walk under the tunnel road surface, visit a new Emergency Escape Refuge, see the giant ventilation fans working and witness an engineering masterpiece first hand. Only children over the age of 10 are allowed on the tour with a maximum of two children per adult. The tour takes between two to three hours and is held on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evening at 5pm and Saturday mornings at 10am. That might mean a late or early Father’s Day present, or you could arrange a group booking for 12 or more people at a time to suit the group. The price is just £5 per person, which is a bit of a bargain. Telephone 0151 236 8602 to book or email: tours@merseytravel.gov.uk WILLIAMSON TUNNELS IF you don’t fancy heading under the river, head under the city streets instead with a tour of Williamson’s famous tunnels. This underground labyrinth is said to criss-cross much of Liverpool and a great section is now open to the public. Head for the Williamson Tunnels Heritage Centre where you can enjoy a guided tour of the famous double tunnel and south tunnel. Touch the brick and sandstone workings
of these wonderful tunnels, and take in a whole new subterranean world! But make sure you take dad to the cafe bar
afterwards for a well earned bevvie! The Old Stableyard, Smithdown Lane, Edge Hill, Liverpool, L7 3EE, tel: 0151 709 6868, website: www.williamsontunnels.co.uk LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE IF your old man is into his cars, he probably likes them big and tough – like he used to be! So take him along to Halewood, the site of the newest of the three Land Rover Experience Centres. Halewood’s award-winning facilities are home to the Land Rover Freelander 2 and your dad can enjoy a tour of every stage of the assembly process. Once you've seen how they're put together, you’ll want to put the Freelander and the other Land Rover vehicles to the test. Lucky then that Halewood has a spectacular off-road course. He’ll love the steep slopes, low friction surfaces and other obstacles as he goes off-road and has an absolute ball! Halewood Visitor Centre, South Road, L24 9BJ, tel: 0151 448 4023, email: halewood@landroverexperience.com
KNOWSLEY SAFARI PARK AERIAL EXTREME IT doesn’t get much wilder, on Merseyside, than a trip to Knowsley Safari Park. But forget about the lions, we’re talking Aerial Extreme! If your dad hasn’t tried out a high ropes adventure course, get him to the safari park and send him out across the 60 or so awe-inspiring obstacles up around the tree tops. There are zip lines, mid-air jumps, gravity-defying climbing walls and much more. No experience or skill is required and you’re connected to a safety line, so no need to worry about the height, just have fun. Knowsley Safari Park, Prescot, L34 4AN, 0845 652 1736, www.aerialextreme.co.uk
JUNGLE RUMBLE IF your dad isn’t the sort to fancy going underground or testing his limits to the extreme, take him to play golf. But being Father’s Day, make it just that little bit more memorable! We at Best of Liverpool put on our golfing gear and strolled along to the new Jungle Rumble crazy golf course at Liverpool ONE. You’ll find it halfway down the central zig-zag staircase, below the Odeon cinema entrance. When we walked in, we realised we should have brought our safari gear rather than our golfing trousers. The whole place is designed to look like some sort of jungle movie set, with each hole dotted around it. There’s bridges, water pools and big boulders everywhere (thankfully they don’t chase after you like in Indiana Jones), plus the air is alive with sounds of jungle life.
It’s good fun for families and very child friendly. Everyone gets a different funky-coloured golf ball and the 18 holes aren’t too taxing. We sampled the food too, with pizzas and paninis available to keep you going before you take on the jungle course, plus there’s a bar for much needed refreshment. Paradise Street, Zig Zag Staircase, Liverpool ONE, 0151 232 2355.
WIN
JUNGLE Rumble is offering Best of Liverpool readers the opportunity to win a family day out at the Indiana Jones-inspired miniature golf course in Liverpool ONE. The 18 hole course recreates the sights and sounds of the jungle rainforest and includes 17,500 sq ft of wooden tikki huts, thick jungle foliage, secret swamps and temple ruins, as well as sounds of a live volcano. The winner will receive a family ticket for four people, valid on two rounds of golf, food and drink for the whole family at the Jungle Cafe, and free Jungle Rumble T-shirts for the kids. To be in with a chance of winning, just answer this question: Q: Which famous Hollywood actor played the role of Indiana Jones in the series of hit movies? IF you’re anything like me you’ll find that tennis isn’t as easy as it looks, which is why seeing the masters at work at the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament is so inspiring. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the tournament, which takes place from Thursday, June 16 to Sunday, June 19, features top players such as Fernando González, Martina Navratilova and Greg Rusedski. As one of the key warm up events to Wimbledon, the Traditional-ICAP Liverpool International takes place in the beautiful Calderstones Park and is a must in the calendar for ATP and WTA players who all compete in a purpose-built, centre court stadium. Northern Vision and Liverpool City Council are now working in partnership to hone the skills of stars of the future through a tennis outreach programme. The aim is to promote the sport every day across the region to develop and enhance existing tennis programmes, as well as set-up new initiatives, working with clubs to get the very best out of players. And it doesn’t end when the tennis season closes. Young people will be encouraged to continue to develop their skills during the winter and head to Wavertree Tennis Centre to make the most of the top-class facilities.
LIVERPOOL actress Suzanne Collins shares her training diary with Best of Liverpool, as she prepares for the RunLiverpool Marathon: “It’s the second month into my training programme now and I have to admit, I’m really enjoying it. I’ve begun running and walking even more now and instead of doing one lap of Birkenhead Park, I’m actually doing two – even though there have been a few dogs scaring me along the way (not too keen on dogs!). The nicer weather lately has made it much easier for me to go for a run before work, rather than later in the evenings. “Luckily I have my marathon team with me at all times to provide support and encouragement, which now includes my trainer Richard, my old youth worker Jim and my very own mascot, Mya - my six year old daughter.

SUZANNE COLLINS’ MARATHON JOURNEY...
“Mya can now ride her bike without stabilisers so she’s been joining me when I go for a run. It’s so lovely to exercise with her and it just proves that training can be fun. “Personal trainer Richard has been fantastic as always and he’s really showed me how to look after my body. I’m now stretching better before and after exercise, drinking a lot more water and pushing myself more. “Overall, it’s been a great few weeks and I’ve been so inspired from the support of my friends that I have decided to start a series of cheerleading classes so that boys and girls aged six and over can come to the marathon in October to cheer on the crowds at the start and finish lines. “When I took part in the London Marathon in 2002, I found that there is nothing better than people being on the sidelines spurring you on – a real spine tingler and a must to help runners get to the finish line!”

The BIG interview Photos: Jason Roberts
In the Limelight Actress Alex Fletcher, talks to Katie McLoughlin about her return to TV and what it’s like to be one of the ‘old ones’ on Hollyoaks...... HAVING spent 14 years as Jacqui Dixon, Brookside’s Childwall studios were virtually a home from home for actress Alex Fletcher. Now aged 35, she has landed a job on Hollyoaks and being back at the studio where it all began is a bit like coming home. “It’s weird, it’s like someone’s just pressed pause and I’m back,” says Alex. “A lot of the crew and make-up girls are the same and it’s good because I didn’t realise how much I was missing it. I was there for nearly 14 years, so I’ve got a bit of that back, which is nice – but I’m one of the old ones! I’m ‘devo’d’ because they’re all like 17-18!” Catching up with Alex on Lime Pictures’ Hollyoaks set in Childwall, she looks every inch the glamorous soap star and it’s hard to believe she’s been out of the limelight since Brookside was axed in 2003. At the end of the Liverpool-based soap, Alex took some time out to raise daughter, Yasmine, and trained as a fitness instructor when acting roles became few and far between during the recession. Alex explains: “I’m a qualified fitness instructor but I was doing that while I was waiting for the auditions to come around. I had Yas and she’s five now, but once she was at school I thought ‘right, what am I going to do?’ I can’t just sit and wait for the phone to ring because you know how hard it is in any job at the minute, but especially in acting -
there’s not that much out there. “I worked hard to get that fitness qualification and I could always go back to it if need be,” adds Alex. “I used to teach step, that was my little thing, but I haven’t done it for ages - I’d probably die if I had to teach now!” As you would expect from a trained fitness instructor, Alex still likes to keep fit and recently ran a half marathon for children’s charity Barnardo’s. Having completed a half marathon, is Alex planning on taking part in the upcoming RunLiverpool Marathon? “You know what, I’d love to,” says the actress from Allerton. “I know I could do it but I’d really love to do Dancing on Ice this year and you do get injuries when you do a marathon, so I wouldn’t like to scupper my chances by putting myself out of it, do you know what I mean?” As well as hoping to be asked to take part in this year’s Dancing on Ice, Alex has just had her contract renewed on Hollyoaks, so we can expect to see a lot more of her in the Chester-based soap. However, she’s not one to take it for granted and realises how lucky she is to have a steady acting job in her home city, saying: “There have been a lot of changes, different writers coming on board and what not. But, I’ve just had my contract renewed, which is good because that makes you feel a bit more a part of it.”
“It’s weird, it’s like someone’s just pressed pause and I’m back...I was there for nearly 14 years, so I’ve got a bit of that back, which is nice - but I’m one of the old ones!"

BEST OF LIVERPOOL
With a young audience, Hollyoaks’ cast is full of pretty young stars in their teens and 20s, so at 35, how does Alex feel to be working with such a young cast? “It’s brill because they’re all full of energy! Steph Davies, who plays my daughter, she’s like a little breath of fresh air and all of my stuff’s with her. But it’s good, it’s good to have a job and it’s local and I’m just enjoying it.” Having started on Brookside when she was just 11-years-old, Alex knows firsthand how hard it can be to grow up on screen and admits she often finds herself giving advice to the younger members of the cast, saying: “Yeah I do kinda share my experiences with them. I’m always saying to Connor Wilkinson who plays my son, Finn, ‘are you alright in school?’ Because I think it’s easy to forget that they’re under different pressures. They’ve got their GCSEs and what not, so I do try and see that everyone’s OK. “But at the same time, they’re in their prime aren’t they? Like little Steph, she’s just done this calendar and she looks amazing on the pictures, but I’m looking at them making sure they’re not too racy!” Alex has already had some heavyweight
storylines to tackle – including her character, Diane, taking a baby after struggling with IVF. The storyline was quite controversial, so, as a newcomer to the soap, was she worried about how people might react? “The whole baby thing was a bit [controversial] but do you know what, I always say this, it’s a soap. Things are always going to be dramatised. You know, people say ‘oh that wouldn’t happen’ but actually it has happened, people have taken babies. I played it more like she’d had a breakdown because I didn’t want her to be just this loony bin that goes and steals this baby. She finds it and takes it but she knows it’s wrong so she gives it back.” Looking ahead, the actress can’t reveal upcoming storylines but does admit there’s a lot on the horizon for her character, saying: “I’ve got quite a bit coming up but it’s more based around Steph, who plays Sinead. There’s a big storyline coming up which we’re filming at the minute, but my stuff is based around her and the trials of being a stepmum to a teenage girl. Sinead’s a bit of a mirror image of Jacqui Dixon, but a bit naughtier.”

Sarah Hooley catches up with actor and star of Nowhere Boy, Josh Bolt, to talk about fame, John Lennon and his latest play... FOR someone who's just spent a morning in college and didn't get in from rehearsals at the Unity Theatre until 4.15am that morning, Josh Bolt is unfeasibly happy. Something which I discover is as genuine as his endless enthusiasm and excitable personality. “We've been rehearsing, rehearsing, rehearsing,” laughs the 17-year-old actor who's due to star in new drama Blind Faith at the Unity Theatre this weekend. “The rehearsals have been going on since February, which is great as everyone knows their lines off by heart now and it's allowed us to be able to focus on the smaller details like props and costumes.” The play, which was written and produced by local production company, Madhatters, tells the tale of 10 friends at T In The Park. Josh explains: “The cast is made up of 10 fantastic actors from across Liverpool, all aged between 15 to 19, and is a story about friendship, love, lies and growing up, which I think most people can relate too. There's no director or lead role so we all throw our ideas in, which makes the
performance really fresh and exciting as every character is capable of stealing the show.” The role isn't Josh's first brush with fame, however, and, despite his tender years, the Halewood actor has an enviable resume. From his first part in Much Ado About Nothing at the Playhouse to landing leading roles in awardwinning film The Be All And End All and Lennon-biopic Nowhere Boy (in which he played John Lennon's childhood best friend) starring Aaron Johnson and Kristin Scott-Thomas, it's quite a feat for someone who's yet to turn 18. “Yeah, everything came really fast! I think what happened to me happens to most actors over 10 years so I've been extremely lucky,” laughs Josh in amazement. “When I found out that I'd got the part in Nowhere Boy I was shell-shocked! I just remember travelling back on the train from the audition in Ealing with my mum thinking 'whoa'. Literally a month later I was with Aaron Johnson on top of this bus driving round the Liver Building filming our first scenes. The last day of filming was my 15th birthday and a week later I was back in college. “We flew out to the New York premiere of the film too and it just blew everything out of the water,” he continues. “I turned up not knowing what to expect but Ethan Hawke was there, so was Courtney Love and then Yoko Ono walked in. Just crazy! We've travelled all over the world with The Be All And End All too. It's won 10 awards now and we've gone everywhere from Monte Carlo and Rome to America.” The 17-year-old has kept his feet firmly on the ground though and, as well as auditioning for new roles, rehearsing for Blind Faith and studying for his A-levels, Josh is a senior member in up-and-coming production, dance and drama company Madhatters. But with a bubbling enthusiasm and “a few exciting things in the pipeline” something tells us it won't be long before Josh Bolt is a household name. Catch Josh in Blind Faith at the Unity Theatre tomorrow (June 3) and Saturday (June 4). Tickets cost £7 and can be bought at www.unitytheatreliverpool.co.uk

The novel promises to be a must-read and recently won second prize at The Festival of York's novel writing competition - beating over 300 entries. Donna Condon, senior editor at Cath Bore publisher Piatkus, who judged the competition, says of Cath's novel: "Your piece was clearly positioned, which is important in today’s market. The rising suspense in the chapter concludes perfectly with its dramatic ending. It definitely left me wanting to know what happens next!" SUMMER IN THE CITY Perfect picnics are a piece of cake with these recipes, says Sue Kelbrick WITH the return of Liverpool International Tennis Tournament this month (and hopefully some sunshine!), comes the opportunty for some alfresco dining in Calderstones Park. “When the sun comes out, so should the food,” says Vip Bhatt, who, along with business partner Jon Whyte, owns the Bean Coffee Shops at Prince's Dock and Brunswick Dock. The International Tennis Tournament provides people with the same opportunity to enjoy great food in the great outdoors.” Bean’s chef, Sophie Barton, agrees: “Transporting picnic food is simple if you pick the right dishes. With these simple recipes you can just wrap and go – leaving you more time to relax and enjoy the tennis.”
TWIST ON A CLASSIC THINK summer, think Pimm's. No other drink conjures up images of long, hazy days in the sunshine and balmy evenings spent outdoors, in quite the way that Pimm's does. Head barman at Matou pan-Asian restaurant and cocktail bar, Roshan Dhakal, gives his personal recipe for the perfect Pimm's. He says: “This is a refreshing summer drink to enjoy with friends and our recipe is a twist on the original. The ginger ale complements the fruit very nicely; and the mint and cucumber make it that little bit different. Our Pimm's Special is very popular in Matou for groups enjoying lunch on our roof terrace.”
MATOU’S PIMM'S SPECIAL Ingredients: 7 or 8 mint leaves 4 strawberries 1 whole lime 1 whole lemon 3 slices cucumber 100ml Pimm's 250ml ginger ale 150ml lemonade (or to fill jug) Ice cubes
LEMON DRIZZLE LOAF CAKE
HAM, EGG & MUSTARD ON GRANARY BLOOMER
Ingredients: 225g butter 225g caster sugar 225g self raising flour 4 large eggs 3 lemons (juice & zest) 85g sugar
Ingredients: 1 granary bloomer 2 hard boiled eggs 3 slices of good quality roast ham Handful of rocket A few cherry tomatoes 2 tbsp mayonnaise 2 tsps wholegrain mustard
Method: ●Cream the butter and 225g sugar in a bowl, add the eggs and flour, then the lemon zest. ●Place into a greased loaf tin. bake in a preheated oven (165oc) for 45-50 minutes until well risen and golden brown. ●Juice the lemons, remove all pips and mix in with the 85g sugar, once out of the oven pour straight over the loaf. Cool and slice to serve.
Method: ● Slice the bloomer into thick slices. ● Mix the mayonnaise and mustard together and coat both pieces of the bread. ● Slice the hard boiled eggs up and place onto the bread, then add ham, rocket and halved cherry tomatoes. ● Serve with a mixed salad.

VIVE LA France! Sue Kelbrick samples sophisticated dining French-style in the heart of south Liverpool ONE glance at the menu and you could be dining in an exclusive restaurant on the French Riviera or even eating in a fashionably bohemian restaurant in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Look out of the window and you realise you are actually in a slightly rainy south Liverpool, but in terms of offering authentic French cuisine, Caveau in Woolton has got it just right. Having been a regular diner at owner and chef Dave Roberts’ previous restaurant, the popular L’Alouette on Lark Lane, I had high hopes for Caveau. And I wasn’t disappointed. Walking in to the delightful restaurant on Allerton Road in Woolton, we were struck by the elegant simplicity of the place. The décor was cool and contemporary, the tables were all beautifully laid out with proper tablecloths and fresh flowers, and the overall ambience was stylish yet relaxed.
The staff were helpful and friendly without being overbearing and we were shown to a table straight away and offered a drink to enjoy whilst we perused the menu. Zut alors, we were spoilt for choice! On offer was a tantalising selection of what sounded like mouth-wateringly delicious dishes. From the chèvre et le chou (goat’s

cheese galette served on a bed of braised sweet cabbage and apple) to the ouef sur le plat au foie gras (pan-fried duck eggs with foie gras, red wine vinegar and shallot butter sauce) for starters; suprême de pintade en crépinette (supreme of guinea fowl with courgette and mixed peppers wrapped in crépinette served with pommes anna with pan jus) and poussin bois boudrin (grilled poussin with a spiced tarragon and shallot vinaigrette with pommes pont neuf) for mains – the most difficult part of the evening was choosing what to eat! After much deliberating, cogitating and digesting, we decided to share the coquilles St Jacques Provencale (king scallops, pan fried with garlic, tomato concassé and parsley) for our starter. Well, what can I say? The scallops quite literally melted in the mouth they were so tender, and the garlic and tomato were the perfect complements to the scallops. My partner, being what you would politely call a ‘hearty’ eater, commented on the generous portion of scallops on the plate. For the main course, I decided to go for the flétan au chanterelle (tranche of fresh halibut with cream vermouth sauce, sauteed chanterelle mushrooms, spring onion and pommes Parisiennes) whilst my other half opted for the magret de canard aux citron vert (roasted duck breast with a sweet lime sauce, chateau potatoes and buttered spinach). I barely noticed what the boyfriend was saying during the main course (which has never happened before, honestly...) because I was enjoying my food so much. The halibut was delicious and the creamy, rich sauce was the ideal contrast to the flaky freshness of the fish. The chanterelle mushrooms and soft, crumbly potatoes were the perfect
finishing touches to a simply flawless dish. I later learned that the roast duck was cooked to perfection (apparently pink is how all the coolest French people have their duck according to my boyfriend, the ‘gastronome’) and was full of flavour, the refreshing lime cutting through the intensity of the sauce.
Now all we had to do was choose a dessert. We decided to go with a French classic – the crème de la crème of desserts shall we say – the crème brûlée. And to coin another French phrase, it was the ‘pièce de résistance’ of the meal. The caramelised top gave a satisfying crack when I attacked it with my spoon and the ‘crème’ underneath was truly sumptuous. Even the blueberry garnish was deliciously sweet and a fitting end to what can only be described as a sublime supper. We ate from the à la carte menu but there is also an early evening menu available throughout the week which is modestly priced at £16.95 for two courses, and is highly recommended for first-time diners
to Caveau. Or on Sundays, try Caveau’s roast dinner served from noon until 5pm. We might not have been dining on the Champs-Élysées but the experience was the nearest you’re likely to get to the real thing without forking out for a trip over the channel. Vive la France as they say... Caveau, 59 Allerton Road, Woolton, telephone 0151 428 6966.

ANY parent with children under the age of five will be familiar with the lovely story, The Tiger Who Came To Tea, written and illustrated by Judith Kerr. Following on from the success of Charlie and Lola at the Everyman and The Gruffalo’s Child at the Playhouse earlier this year, this children’s favourite is leaping off the page and being brought to life for the stage. Running from Monday, June 27 until Wednesday, June 29 at the Liverpool Playhouse, The Tiger Who Came To Tea promises to be a delightful family show, packed with oodles of magic, sing-a-long songs and clumsy chaos. SIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!
BECOMING A PROFESSIONAL IF photography is your passion, why not consider making it your life’s work? We spoke to Carl Crozier of Simply Perfection Photography to get his advice on turning a hobby into a profession. Having had a keen interest in photography since leaving school, Carl found his office day job wasn’t providing the creative outlet he needed so he decided to go back to college whilst still working. “I started a HNC in Photography in 2004,” says Carl from St Helens. “At this point I was still using an old, beaten up point and shoot digital camera and really didn’t know a great deal about photography but I was thrown in at the deep end and loved every minute of it. After finishing the course in 2006 I started picking up the odd freelance assignment and getting bits and pieces of photography work through friends and relatives.” When Carl met Rachel, his business partner at Simply Perfection, she was similarly qualified and they started doing freelance wedding work together on an ad-hoc basis before deciding to start Simply Perfection Photography.
With the International Photography Festival in town, Paul Baker picks out some top events and sees how budding photographers can get involved PHOTOGRAPHY is fast taking over the planet! That might seem like an overstatement, but take a quick glimpse at the internet and the wealth of social networking sites. Each one is packed full of photographs, of ourselves, our children, our nights out and interesting things we’ve spotted during our day. It seems we love to take photographs, but more than that, we love to share these images with our friends, family and anybody else who’ll look. This is particularly relevant to the Look 11 International Photography Festival which is currently taking place right here in Liverpool. Having started in May and running throughout this month, the prestigious festival will be presented across the city’s gallery spaces until June 26, when the festival officially ends. The theme is photography as a call to action and festival organisers hope that photographers of all levels and those who have no photography experience, will be inspired by what they see displayed around the city to pick up a camera and take photographs and have something to say through their photographs. There are simply too many events to list them all, but here are some of the Look11 Festival highlights: In 1975, Paul Trevor made a collection of street photographs in Liverpool looking at inner city deprivation. These fascinating images portray a community defiant and in high spirits despite a backdrop of unemployment and poverty. Like You’ve Never Been Away is on at the Walker Art Gallery and is not to be missed.

● The International Slavery Museum is displaying 90 stunning black and white photographs, by Preston-born Ian Berry, showing life in South Africa where segregation was institutionalised by the government.
● FACT has both Moral Hazard and Big Society by Simon Barber, examining images from the global economic crisis. ● Baltic Creative has an exhibition called Asylum Seekers by Anita Smith, running alongside a display of photos by Stephanie de Leng taken inside HMP Manchester, the site of the infamous Strangeways Prison riot 21 years ago. START SNAPPING IF you’ve been suitably inspired, enter Liverpool Cathedral’s photography competition for 2011. The closing date for entries is 5pm, August 26 and an expert panel of judges, led by renowned photographer Mike McCartney, will ask people of all ages and abilities to capture ‘inspiring places’ across the city centre. All entries will go on display at the cathedral from September 15-18, where members of the public will be invited to choose a People’s Winner in addition to the judges’ awards. The categories, rules and entry forms are available to download from the cathedral website, www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk, or from the
Welcome Desk at the cathedral itself. A good place to start would be to check out the Look11 Photopoints that are located throughout the city. The festival organisers want everyone from the mobile snapper, to the serious shooter to respond to these Photopoint locations and the call to action theme in their own way. There are 18 locations around the city and routes offer a healthy, interesting and creative activity for all the family. Plus it’s free to participate. Visit the Photopoints page on the Look11 website to download the maps and guides. Take your camera on a tour of the cityscape, have something to say and be a part of Look11.
“Turning the hobby into a career was a very natural decision for us,” adds Carl. “Our passion for taking photos was really what drove us in making the leap, and still drives us today because nothing quite compares to the satisfaction of capturing that amazing moment where everything in the picture is just right. Certainly not the office job!”
So does Carl have any advice for budding photographers? “I’d have to say that you need to find what you’re passionate about. There are many types of photography and the technical side alone isn’t enough to make this a rewarding career, you need to find what gives you a buzz and drives you. Because ultimately, people are buying into your photographic vision and it shows if you’re taking photos of something you don’t care that much about.” Visit www.simplyperfection.co.uk for more information.

HIDDEN GEMS
The Roundhouse, Wavetree
Smallest House in England WAVERTREE boasts a truly hidden gem, in the shape of the smallest house in the country. The address of England’s tiniest house is 95 High Street, Wavertree. It was apparently built around 1850 in a space which had previously been merely a side passage. Currently it’s found to the right of The Cock & Bottle pub and people used it as a house until as late as 1925. The property is said to be a mere six feet wide, and measures 14ft from the front to the rear. The Discovering Historic Wavertree website says: “There are stories of a husband and wife having raised eight children in the house, and also of one very large resident who had to go upstairs sideways.” 95 High Street, Wavertree, L15.

Neighbourhood Bistro
Paul Baker searches through Childwall and Wavertree and unearths some real local interest
THIS family run cafe-restaurant is perhaps not so hidden, but certainly a gem. Not hidden, because local celebs are often spotted dining here, but definitely worth seeking out if you’ve not before. The rustic décor aims to cross a Parisian bistro with the house next door, so you’ll feel pretty chilled here and the food’s great. It’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but don’t miss the early bird offers and the afternoon teas. Yum! 261 Woolton Road, L16 8NA, 0151 737 2266.
Wavertree Sports Park SPORTING pursuits are well covered in the area thanks to the Wavertree Sports Park. A Lifestyles complex, the Sports Park offers a whole range of sporting, exercise and leisure facilities. There’s Liverpool Aquatics Centre with its Olympic size pool and fitness suite, Liverpool Tennis Centre with fantastic tennis courts, bowling greens and five-a-side pitches. There’s also Liverpool Athletics Centre, providing great indoor training facilities, plus an eight lane outdoor athletics track. Wavertree Sports Park, Wellington Road, Wavertree, L15 4LE.

BEST OF LIVERPOOL
WHEN you’re looking for fascinating local areas, packed with history and things to do, perhaps Childwall and Wavertree won’t be the first places to come to mind. But dig a little deeper and you’d be surprised... Situated near the end of the M62 motorway, Childwall and Wavertree are in great locations, close to the city centre and convenient for travel elsewhere. The two places are adjacent to each other and are easy to get to either by road or public transport, with many bus routes through the area along with railway stations at Broad Green and Wavertree Technology Park nearby. Amenities wise, you’ve got everything you’ll need for a day out, with a number of separate shopping areas to buy snacks, plus no shortage of pubs and eateries. Childwall woods
Childwall delights visitors with its many pleasant green spaces and its sense of history. It’s a long established village, name-checked in the Domesday Book back in 1086. Childwall is supposed to have Norse roots in its name, which means the field of the well or spring. If you’re interested in exploring the history of Liverpool you’ll find much to enjoy in the area. All Saints Church is a Grade I listed building and the only surviving medieval church in the borough of Liverpool. It’s a beautiful old church whose earliest surviving section is from the fourteenth century.
Definitely worth visiting. Also in the area, don’t miss the Childwall Abbey Hotel and public house. Whether you want a top up of your local history or of your real ale, you’ll find it here in this excellent establishment. The building is thought to be a chapel of the former Childwall Abbey and may date as far back as 1484. The pub has long been a favourite haunt of actors staying in Liverpool and many famous names have carved their names into the old wooden windowframes there. Look out for these along with the resident spooks who are said to haunt the pub! Wavertree is no less historic an area. Also in the Domesday Book, its name is said to mean wavering tree. Places of interest are many and include The Roundhouse, a village lock-up built in 1796 and once used to detain local drunks. The listed building is to be found on Wavertree’s village green, which is the only surviving piece of common land in the whole of Liverpool. Holy Trinity, a fine Georgian church dating from 1794, was described by former Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman as the best example of its era in Liverpool. Wavertree is also the home of The Blue Coat School, a grammar school founded in 1708 which moved to the suburb in 1906. For those who like nothing better than a pleasant stroll or maybe a picnic, you could do worse than head towards Childwall and Wavertree. The area offers many outdoor spaces to explore from Wavertree Park and Wavertree Botanic Gardens along with Childwall Woods, Childwall Fields and Score Lane Park. There’s even a fine golf course nearby at Childwall Golf Club offering a testing 18 holes parkland course, ranking alongside the best in the area. Other places of local interest include the Liverpool Royal School for the Blind, which was founded in 1791; Wavertree Sports Park, Wavertree Garden Suburb
and famous local landmark the Picton Clock Tower. If you’re interested in having a closer look at the Clock Tower you’ll find it at the junction of Childwall Road, Church Road North and the High Street. It featured in the opening credits to Brookside, but it’s lasted much longer than that particular soap opera, having been presented to the people of Wavertree by local resident and architect Sir James Picton in 1884 as a memorial to his late wife. The house he designed and lived in is called Sandy Knowe, and it's still standing on Wavertree’s Mill Lane. Speaking of houses, did you know Wavertree had the smallest one in England? See if you can spot it on the High Street! And if you’ve missed that before, it just goes to show that wherever you look you’ll find a wealth of interesting things in your local area, and that Childwall and Wavertree certainly offer some rich pickings.
