WE’RE not one for blowing our own trumpets, but, oh go on then, Best of Liverpool has been shortlisted in The 2012 Newspaper Awards! We’re down to the final seven in the Coldset Colour Supplement of the Year Category, sponsored by SunChemical and the winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Wednesday, April 25 at the London Hilton, Park Lane. So well done to The Best of Liverpool team, but while we wait to find out if we’ve won, we’ve been beavering away on the April edition which is jam-packed full of eggshilerating events (I apologise for the over-use of Easter puns but one whiff of chocolate and we get a bit over egg-cited...) Yes, the Easter bunny is almost here, a magical time for children (and big kids like us!) and we certainly have plenty to look forward to this weekend. Read Emma Thompson’s guide to what’s on over the Easter holidays on page 27. We also have some Easter craft ideas, courtesy of Underwater Street, on page 21 and recipes for your Sunday lunch (page 22). Also this month we have one of the most glamorous events in the city’s sporting calendar, The John Smith’s Grand National. If you are going to the races this year, but haven’t sorted your attire as yet, never fear as our

style expert Sarah Hooley has put together some winning outfits to set your hearts a flutter on pages 6-7. We also have some top titfer tips and have listed some of the coolest venues for pre and post-race celebrations on page 13. This month charts the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Paul Baker rounds up some of the city’s centennial commemoration events on page 26. Meanwhile, Katie McLoughlin puts the new Friday Fish menu at Il Forno to the test on page 23, and in a bid to even out my ruddy skintone, I try out a photorejuvenation treatment. Find out how I got on on page 10. Richard Lackey shares his passion for racquet sports on pages 14-15 and interviews homegrown talent, Marcus Collins and Lee Latchford-Evans on pages 16-17. And just for the sheer cuteness factor, we bring you the most adorable photos ever in our leap year baby special on page 12. That’s all for now, but hopefully we’ll be back in May with some good news about the award. Keep your fingers crossed!

MISS LIVERPOOL 2012

TV presenter Cherry Healey and Masterchef: The Professionals winner Claire Lara joined forces on the judging panel for North West Cancer Research Fund’s 2012 Cake Bake, the flagship event in the charity’s O-Very campaign launched to raise awareness about ovarian cancer. Wirral-born Claire and O-Very patron Cherry Healey joined LEAF tea shop owner Natalie Haywood and the charity’s chief executive Anne Jackson to judge a selection of the best sweet treats in the region. Claire, who was the first woman to win BBC2’s Masterchef: The Professionals and who has cooked for the Queen, says: “It’s overwhelming how many people turned up to support the O-Very campaign. We had 65 entries during the course of the day and everyone had made so much effort to present their cakes beauti-

FAYE Ayers was crowned as Miss Liverpool 2012 at a glittering ceremony at the Liverpool Olympia. Thirty-eight local girls took part for a chance to win a prize package and a place at the Miss England final later this year. The 18-year-old from Sefton Village received her crown from last year’s winner Sarah Fairley. In a tightly fought contest, the panel of judges including Radio City breakfast show host Rossie and Desperate Scousewives stars Amanda Harrington and Debbie O’Toole, took much deliberation before announcing the final 12 contestants. The finalists were then whittled down to just three with Faye Ayers picked as the city’s representative in Miss England 2012.

EVERTON footballer, Tony Hibbert, went the extra Golden Mile for children at Busy Bees nursery last month. The nursery in Formby held a pint-sized Olympic afternoon for children, carers and VIP guests. Right back Hibbert was only too pleased to join in the Torch Relay event with the children to raise money for their chosen charity: The Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust. Tony put the children through their paces before getting them under starters orders for their first Golden Mile which they completed

in a continuous relay around the specially decorated tracks with cheers from a host of supporters. Tony says: “It’s great to be back at the nursery where my daughter spent her pre-school years – the staff genuinely care about the children as if they’re one big family — my daughter flourished under their special care. “I’m also really pleased that Busy Bees are taking children’s fitness seriously — they make it fun — the children here today just grinned from ear to ear as they belted around the track — what a great way to spend an afternoon!”

WITH only a week to go until the John Smith’s Grand National, the race is on to be top of the style stakes. EVERYONE wants to look their best for the races and competition will undoubtedly be fierce as the women of Liverpool battle to be best dressed. So, to help you find that winning look we caught up with Kathy Nelson, owner of ladies’ occasion wear shop, Kay Nelson in Wavertree. “If you’re looking for a dress, all lengths are acceptable,” says Kathy. “Very short hemlines are obviously better for the very young. Long and flowing is popular for all age groups and knee length is timeless. In terms of colour, black and white is always a winner, while light, summery pastel colours – or neon for the daring – brighten your mood.”

Kathy explains that vintage is another popular style this spring, but above all it’s important to feel comfortable. She adds: “Wear an outfit that flatters your shape, rather than wearing something just because it’s trendy. There really is something for everybody this year so you’re sure to find the ideal dress. “Fascinators and hats are also still in favour,” Kathy continues. “But new for 2012 is the ‘disc’ a mix of the hat and fascinator. As for bags and shoes, either opt for a block colour to match your outfit or go for a cream, navy, black or silver, which are always acceptable and wearable afterwards. Be careful when choosing your shoes though. Races days are hours long and what may seem comfy in the shop doesn’t always work out – and sore feet can lead to misery!” The shop, which is about to celebrate 60 years in business, has a diverse choice of stock ranging from size 8 – 28 and offers expert, friendly advice. With the Grand National fast approaching on the rail, Paul Baker kicks for home by answering the question on every male racegoer's lips... How will I stand out in the fashion stakes?

Italian Classics basket weave silk tie, £25, from High & Mighty

EVERY year it's the same conundrum... what to wear for the races? The girls all think it’s easy for us men, just throw a suit on and we’re ready to roll. But it’s never that simple, no, no, no. You see, it’s not just the ladies who get dressed up to the nines for the Grand National meeting, and with Aintree almost here there’s little time to outshine the other suit-wearing gentlemen at the track side this month. The choice is thus, do I go all out smart with the most dapper suit I can afford with a tie to match or do I try and catch the eye? This depends on the man in question, of course, but if you’re an attention seeking so-and-so, why not embrace your inner dandy and find a suit with a difference? Or, if you can’t afford to splash the cash on a new suit, just accessorise with a cool cravat or tie, some new shoes and cufflinks. It’s the cost effective way to get your threads noticed and, of course, leaves you with more money in your pocket to back the winner in the big one on Saturday!

Laser quest Michelle Rushton is spared from her blushes, thanks to a little laser therapy... I was shown into an elegant waiting room with a period fireplace and sumptuous stylish settee and cushions. I was served a welcoming coffee and introduced to managing director Linda Cunningham who gave me a consultation to assess my skin. While we chatted away, Linda subtly studied my face and at the end of the conversation she tactfully commented that I had: “Really quite good skin but a few broken capillaries causing the redness.” Looking at my skin through a magnifying lamp, she showed me the sun damage which was also adding to uneven skintone. Linda suggested photo-rejuvenation using IPL TM and AFT TM pulsed light technology, which is ideal for rosacea and sun damage, signs of aging, birthmarks, unwanted hair, unsightly small veins, pigment and redness, acne and other blemishes. She promised it would even out my skin tone, making my skin smoother, less red, and more youthful looking. I have to admit, the following week when I turned up for my treatment, I started to feel a bit nervous and worried that the laser treatment would hurt. I am a bit of a wimp. But, Linda put me at ease straight away, explaining how she was going to use the most advanced technology, using squared off pulsed light, instead of jagged, which apparently gives a more even coverage and is less painful. Inviting me to lie on the bed, Linda

covered my peepers with protection eyewear and applied a cool gel to my face before setting to work with the laser, mainly concentrating on my cheeks, nose and chin, as well as my neck and chest. At first, every time she touched my face with the laser, it made me jump. It didn’t really hurt, it was more like being flicked with an elastic band, but once I relaxed, it wasn’t bad at all. The treatment was over in a flash (less than five minutes) and I felt a slight stinging, like very mild sunburn. Linda showed me my face in the mirror. It was quite red but she assured me that it would calm down very soon and gave me a cool pack to apply. She explains: “I call it controlled injury. Your skin has been stimulated to make new collagen and will shine and glow as it renews, refreshes and regenerates. You will see a real difference in two weeks.” By the time we had got downstairs, the redness had subsided and, by the time I got home, it was completely back to normal. In fact, Linda says that you can apply make-up straight after the treatment and many people have it on their lunchbreak, then go straight back to work. Linda gave me some aloe vera moisturiser to apply and advised me to sleep with an extra pillow to help with drainage. The next day, I was a little puffy around the eyes and my skin felt a little taut, but it was nothing to write home about. I noticed my skin already looked smoother and less blotchy. A few days on and my skin feels great. I have got to go back for three more treatments, but I’m not nervous now I know what to expect and can’t wait to see the finished result. Hopefully, I can throw my green camouflage makeup in the bin for good!

Painless Laser Hair Removal Ever wished you’d never have to shave, pluck or wax your unwanted hair again? But worried that laser treatment might be painful, difficult or expensive. Not any more!

I’VE always had a complex about my complexion. Although I’ve been lucky enough not to suffer from spots, I’ve always had a ruddy face since my school days and used to get teased a bit about my rosy cheeks causing me to blush even more. Over the years, I’ve spent a fortune on green corrective moisturiser which tones my skintone down a tad, but a few glasses of wine later and I’m positively beetroot coloured. So, when a friend in work recommended the Epilight Clinic New Skin Clinic, I promptly took a peek at the company’s website. HOW FASCINATING! IF you are not a hat person then why not try the next best thing? A fascinator is a headpiece which is not as formal as a hat but will add the wow factor to your races outfit. They come in all shapes and sizes and adornments, from lace to feathers, flowers, beads and sequins. Here’s a few ideas to give you a head start...

Sarah Hooley takes her hat off to marvelous Liverpool milliner, Rosie Olvia... IF you need a stunning hat for next week’s Grand National, local milliner Rosie Olivia is a sure bet. Rosie Olivia, based in Woolton, is one of the hottest up-andcoming designers in the UK and has recently launched her brand new spring summer 2012 collection. Having trained under world renowned designers like Philip Treacy and Victoria Grant, the south Liverpool-milliner went on to set up her own label with help from the Prince’s Trust and is quickly earning an army of fans for her striking designs. Her latest collection showcases her infectious personality and introduces a quirky mix of silks, sinamay, pinok pok and straw in refreshing lilacs, aqua greens, muted creams and bold reds. Each creation is handmade at Rosie Olivia’s Woolton showroom and incorporates an exclusive, trademark lace hand-crafted by the designer herself. Key pieces include the oversized ‘Birds’ nest’ inspired Madusa hat, and Rosie Olivia says that she aims to bring an innovative approach to modern hat wearing. She explains: “I strongly believe there is a perfect hat for everyone. I take my inspiration from the manipulation of fabrics, natural movement and seasonal colour. I am passionate about the history and tradition of the hat but I also want to inject a modern take on head wear that women will be able to wear every day.” For more information visit www.rosieolivia.com. Prices range from £80 - £410.

MERSEYSIDE milliner Hayley Marsden is X Factor star Rebecca Ferguson’s favourite hat designer and has some great advice for stylish racegoers. She says: “The key to wearing any hat is to wear it with confidence. A hat worn well will be the talking point of any event. However, a hat worn wrong can spell disaster for even the most stylish outfit.” Here are some more top tips from Hayley: Select a hat that suits your face shape. For example a person with a long face would look better in a short hat rather than a hat with height. l Do consider alternative hairstyles. Most ladies on special occasions tend to leave their hair down. However, most hats look best with hair that is worn swept to one side in a messy bun or a loose plait. Long hair is best left down only when wearing floppy sun hats. l Depending on the hat choice, most hats look effective when worn forward — situated over the brows and tilted on l

a angle. l A hat can add a real ‘wow’ factor but if you are going for a big hat, keep the dress simple and tailored. Don’t wear big earrings with a big hat, just a nice necklace. l Don’t stick to just one colour in your outfit — pink dress, shoes, hat and bag doesn’t look good. Add a different colour with your hat, such as olive green or chocolate brown or bronze, if the dress is fuchsia pink. l Fascinators and comb slides are best worn on the side or back of the head. Again, don’t wear big earrings, perhaps just studs in the ears and a necklace. l With all hats, keep checking in the mirror throughout the day so they stay in the correct position; a hat that’s slipped backwards loses all its impact! l Spray hairspray on your hair before putting your hat on as this will help to prevent it from slipping out of place. l Take spare hairgrips to tame any out of place hairs and use a hat pin on windy days to hold your hat securely in place.

baby Maddison with her mummy and daddy on March 7 after one of their family members saw the competition in the Best of Liverpool supplement. “At just seven-days-old, Maddison was absolutely tiny and it was just the most precious shoot. We love that we have been able to capture those early moments for them as a family to be able to cherish for a long time to come.” Zoë Photography is based at Suite 21 The Hahnemann, 42 Hope Street, Liverpool L1 9BZ. TIMELESS BEAUTY A LEAP year birthday is something extra special as it only comes around once every four years. To celebrate the new leap year babies who joined this exclusive group on Wednesday, February 29 this year, local wedding and portrait photographer, Zoë Richards launched a competition in the last edition of Best of Liverpool for parents to win a fabulous photoshoot for their newborn. Zoë, who has a photography studio on Hope Street, loves to photograph babies when they are a week old as she believes they look their most adorable, yet still have that newborn look. She had quite a few entries from new parents who emailed her with their individual stories for a chance to win the Zoë Photography New Born Shoot but she was most enchanted with the story of baby Maddison Grace. Maddison’s mum and dad, Mark and Tracy, met at midnight on New Year’s Eve 2011. They had both become detached from their friends, and as Tracy turned around to look for them she saw Mark. He was about to leave so she said “Happy New Year” to him and that was it. He started to talk to Tracy and they have been a couple ever since! They went on holiday in the following April together and Mark proposed. They moved in together in the May and discovered that they were expecting a little baby girl. They wanted a baby but never expected it to happen so soon, so

Tracy credits this to them getting fit for their holiday. Tracy has had a very tough pregnancy due to constant sickness, and as a result was very worried for her baby girl’s health, due to lack of nutrients. Thankfully, Maddison Grace was born naturally on Wednesday, February 29 at 4am, in Ormskirk Hospital, and although she was a full term baby, she was tiny at only 5lb 2oz. Zoë says: “At Zoë Photography we were thrilled to be able to photograph

Richard Lackey puts on his Wimbledon whites and discovers how tennis can change your life for the better...

THERE is no greater sport than tennis. A bold statement I hear you say, but I speak from experience. As a teenager I was rarely seen without a tennis racket in my hands, always down the park or in the street trying to be like my idols Steffi, Pete and co. But as I hit my twenty-something years, other pursuits and interests took me away from the court. Then last year I hit the big 3-0, and decided once and for all to re-ignite my passion for the sport. Ten months later, and despite being a newcomer to club tennis, I can honestly say that it has improved my life no end. Tennis will make you feel fitter and more alive than ever which should come as no surprise as tennis is said to be better than swimming for all-round fitness, utilises every part of your body, and promotes cardio wellbeing. You will become healthily competitive. You will meet new people who share the same passion. And you’ll lose weight by doing something you actually enjoy doing! But, when it comes to the sport’s numerous benefits, don’t just take my word for it, ask Mark Cowley who is head coach at Maghull Tennis Club, one of the top clubs in the Liverpool and Southport Tennis Leagues, and someone who knows only too well why tennis is so great for you. “I recently bumped into a fella who had joined a rival club, and when I asked him how it was going he used the word ‘addictive’, and he is right, tennis is totally addictive,” says Mark, who first developed a love for the sport when Andre Agassi won the 1992 Wimbledon title (even purchasing a bandana to further emulate his hero!) “The harder you train the better you become, and as you get better you become more competitive and compelled to push yourself even further.” Now if all that talk of competition and ‘pushing yourself’ brings you out in a cold sweat, don’t let it. Tennis is for everyone – all ages and all abilities. Maghull Tennis Club has over 80 members, from fiveyear-olds to 80 plus, with both sexes equally utilising its all-weather courts. Tennis social nights take place during the week and at weekends, while league and cup matches take centre stage during the exciting tennis season (April-July),

when the club competes against other teams in the area, playing mixed, ladies’ and men’s doubles. Last season four of Maghull’s six teams all achieved promotion! The club, which proudly boasts an impressive 85 year history in the town, also has a thriving junior scene, providing wannabe Nadals and Azarenkas with regular tennis, not to mention a chance to make new friends, boost self-confidence, and the possibility of becoming a professional. “Tennis really is a sport that you will play for the rest of your life,” adds Mark. “You get husbands and wives playing together, fathers and sons, brothers and sisters, you name it. It’s a very social sport, for all standards. There is a place for everyone whatever your ability.”

So, instead of just confining your tennis sessions to those two balmy Wimbledon weeks in June, head to a court near you, now, and you yourself will realise that there really is no greater sport than tennis. In fact, it will be a match made in heaven! Maghull Tennis Club is situated behind Maghull Town Hall and The Meadows Gymnasium, on Hall Lane, just off Northway (A59). The club welcomes tennis players of all ages and abilities. Coaching is provided to both juniors and adults. TENNIStrappings Richard Lackey checks out the essential items that will set you on the road to grand slam glory... NO ONE wants to have all the gear and no idea! So, before you invest your hard-earned cash in a tennis wardrobe to make Nadal sick with envy, head to your local club first to test out the water and see if this tennis lifestyle is for you. Get a feel for the place and your fellow players, evaluate your personal skill level and speak to the coach about your strengths, goals and areas that need working on. Then and only then (once you realise that you’re slowly becoming a bona fide tennis addict) is it time to go out and treat yourself to some new tennis attire. And the good news is that tennis doesn’t have to be a pricey pursuit. When it comes to the basics, all you really ever need to get started is a decent racket, pair of trainers and some tennis balls. After that it’s entirely up to you whether you want to pimp things up or not. Tennis rackets, for example, come in a variety of forms, from sizes and string type to price. There is a racket out there for you, it’s just about persevering and finding it. And in terms of clothing and accessories, all the major sport brands have their own range of tennis gear designed specifically for the committed player, which can be purchased online or at your local sports shop. The BIG interview

Photo:Chuff Media

At home with Marcus Collins

The X-Factor star talks openly to Richard Lackey about getting drunk in Liverpool, plans to launch his own hair salon, and receiving saucy lingerie from obsessive fans... MARCUS Collins needs little introduction. At just 23, he’s already achieved more than most in a lifetime; runner-up in a prime-time talent show, best mates with Gary Barlow, currently on a live tour and promoting his debut album (simply titled, Marcus Collins). The Crosby lad has the world at his feet – fame, fortune and hoards of supporters who idolise him, but behind the glitz and glamour lies a young man who loves nothing more than coming back home. “My life has dramatically changed but nothing stops me from turning up at my mum’s in Crosby, walking the dog and going to the shop for milk,” says the former hairdresser, who is literally bursting with energy during our interview. Marcus grew up in Crosby, attended St Edmund’s Primary School in Waterloo and Sacred Heart High School respectively, and embarked on a hairdressing career at the Jonathan James’ salon. But it was joining the school choir when he was just seven that would have the greatest influence on his future. What I want to know is how a normal guy from Crosby goes on to become a household name without cracking up. “It is still all a shock to me because I still can’t believe it is actually happening,” says a bemused Marcus. “Like, I was driving along the other day and my song came on the radio. I was on my own and I wound down the windows and just start screeching. I was so happy. All these school kids were looking at me like I was a proper crank!” Speaking of ‘cranks’, Marcus went on to divulge about the darker side of fame, namely obsessed fans. “I’ve got some mad fans,” he says laughing. “There’s

one in particular and she needs some kind of sedation. She’s lost the plot. She’s forever sending me knickers and brassieres in the post. She even sent me a set of false teeth last week. That frightened the life out of me.” Marcus also appears to have his head firmly screwed on and during our chat it is evident that he fully understands just how fickle pop can be and how former talent show contestants have failed to go past one album. Maybe that’s why he is already making plans, just in case, to open up his own hair salon.

“Liverpool is my home. You can take me out of it but my voice is still the same, my mind is still the same, I still dress like a Scouse lad, my eyebrows are still massive! There’s no changing me.” Exclusively revealing his intentions to Best of Liverpool, he says: “I’m thinking of having my own little salon. I don’t know what I’d call it, though. I don’t want to just call it the Marcus Collins Salon. But I want to do something so I know that all that hard work [training as a hairdresser] wasn’t for nothing. “It would be absolutely based in Liverpool with special offers on bouncy blow-dries, Russian extensions and big Scouse eyebrows for everyone!” Photo:Chuff Media

16

BEST OF LIVERPOOL

Until then, Marcus plans to stay true to himself by releasing music that he and his fans enjoy; that and continuing to return home to Liverpool to do the things he loved doing before fame beckoned (even though trips to the Metquarter nowadays have to be in disguise and at the crack of dawn to avoid being besieged by fans!). “My perfect day in Liverpool would be getting up and going to Mimi’s Cafe in Crosby for a nice, big fry-up,” he says. “Then I’d go and see my nan and grandad, before heading into town for a shop and some lunch. Sakura and The Quarter on Falkner Street are my favourite places to eat, and I literally live in Lush and Topman. “Then in the evening I would have a couple of drinks in Alma De Cuba which I absolutely adore. That church is my haunt. You would usually see me in there at the weekend rotten drunk on the alter!” And as we end our interview it is most clear that Marcus is determined not to turn his back on his roots. He adds: “Liverpool is my home. You can take me out of it but my voice is still the same, my mind is still the same, I still dress like a Scouse lad, my eyebrows are still massive! There’s no changing me.” Marcus’ debut album, Marcus Collins, is out now.

Richard Lackey hooks up with Steps’ star Lee Latchford-Evans to talk about the reunion, performing at the Cavern and those yellow outfits... IF you were a fervent pop fan in the late-90s chances are you had a poster of Steps on your bedroom wall. The quintet – famously dubbed “ABBA on speed” – stormed the charts back in the day with their colour co-ordinated outfits, robotic dance routines and sparkly hits such as Tragedy, One For Sorrow and Better Best Forgotten, before disbanding in 2001. But now they are back, seemingly bigger than before with a hit TV show, a number one greatest hits compilation and a sell-out tour [they were at Liverpool ECHO Arena last night] to add to their already impressive CV. Local lad and band member, Lee LatchfordEvans, admits the reunion has come somewhat of a surprise, but not before we have a good old reminisce about those infamous outfits. “Anything yellow,” jokes the 37-year-old, when asked if he regrets any of the band’s wacky costumes. “We looked like five canaries walking down the street.” He might be right, but that didn’t stop the band becoming a sensation back in 1997, frequently at the top of the charts, selling out arenas left, right and centre, and even bagging a BRIT award for Best Selling Live Act in 2000. So why has Steps – consisting of Lee, Ian ‘H’ Watkins, Faye Tozer, Lisa Scott-Lee and Claire Richards – achieved what other similar acts, including the likes of All Saints, Five and Blue, have failed to in their quest for a second stab at pop fame? Lee, who grew up in Ellesmere Port, has his own theory. He explains: “I think there is a big difference between Steps and those other bands. “We are boys and girls so we have something for everyone. We also don’t try to be too cool or too

serious. We are who we are. We are just trying to bring a bit of light into the world. And the world is a bleak place at the moment. “There is a recession, no one has got money and everyone is struggling. “So if you can come to a concert for two hours, let your hair down, forget all your worries and have a great time, that’s what Steps can bring and I think people want that colour back in their life.” In the meantime, last night’s Liverpool gig was a homecoming for Lee, who as an avid Evertonian, frequently visited the city when he was growing up. “I’ve got some very fond memories of being a child with my father at the games,” says Lee, who is also the director of online fitness magazine, famouslyfit.com. “Liverpool is a great city. “I had a rock band after Steps for a while called The Latch and I actually performed at The Cavern Club. So I’ve had the experience of performing here in a live band situation, as well as my shopping, nightclub and football days.” Back on the subject of Steps, and it is quite clear that there is a real affection for the 20 millionrecord-selling group, no more evident than in the fact that last year’s Steps: The Reunion documentary became one of the most watched shows in digital channel Sky Living’s history. There’s even a second series on the way and talk of a new album. Ending our chat, Lee continues to pinch himself at the resurgent Steps phenomenon. He adds: “No one expected a number one show, tour and album off the back of it [the documentary]. This was not planned at all and we have the fans to thank for that.” Better best forgotten? Evidently not.

“We are who we are. We are just trying to bring a bit of light into the world. And the world is a bleak place at the moment.”

ONE TO WATCH A STROKE OF GENIUS... Katie McLoughlin meets Liverpool artist and photographer, Matt Ford as he unveils his latest project... HIS last collection examined the beauty of the body in a bold and enigmatic way. Now, Liverpool-based photographer and artist, Matt Ford, is preparing to exhibit a thought-provoking new collection of silk screenprints exploring the issue of domestic violence. Matt, 30, from Toxteth, will exhibit pieces from his Bruise collection at The Art Show in the Camp and Furnace next month. The collection tackles the issue of domestic

violence in gay relationships – a hard-hitting subject recently explored in Love Lust Deception Rejection – a new play by Matt’s partner, Liverpool playwright John Maguire, which was shown in the Lantern Theatre in February. Matt, who is presenting The Art Show with dot-art, says: “I created an abstract collection, in the format of the perception based inkblot tests, exploring the physiological effects of the play’s taboo subject, domestic violence. “The subject is something that hits more relationships than many people know or, of course, talk about. I originally set myself the challenge to create something beautiful out of something that’s not. But all I created was the illusion. Scratch beneath the surface, dig a little deeper and these intricate and delicate pictures tell another story.” As well as pieces from Bruise, Matt will exhibit work from his Liverpool collection at

The Art Show. “With the Liverpool collection I simply wanted to create something surreal in a city where anything can happen,” explains the artist. “From the image of the unnaturally elongated St John’s Tower to the mirror image of the Liver Building, each image in the collection distorts or exaggerates the architecture depicted in them.” Alongside Matt’s work, The Art Show, which coincides with Liverpool Art Month, will feature work by four up-and-coming Liverpool artists depicting contemporary culture in the city. Plus, there’ll be entertainment from The Sense of Sound singers and local DJs Can’tMixWon’tMixShouldn’tMixDon’tMix. Matt Ford & dot-art present: The Art Show S/S12 at Camp and Furnace, 67 Greenland Street, L1 0BG, Thursday, May 3 from 7pm (bar and venue opens 6pm). Free admission. Exhibition continues until May 4-6, from 11am-6pm.

Whole again? James Westerby grills Liz McClarnon on Master Chef, girlie catfights, guilty crushes and whether the Kittens will reform... RUMOURS have been circulating that Atomic Kitten will be reforming for a series of concerts and will be part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. The girl’s management company are keeping schtum at the moment, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed. In the meantime, we catch up with former Kitten and Liverpool sweetheart, Liz McClarnon...

I was on my own. With Legally I did so many shows so often, like eight a week. I was nervous for the first couple of shows, then I got cool with it but when I moved to a new venue I was nervous again. Did you always want to be a singer? I always liked the idea but I was studying to go into law, I was going to be a solicitor. That was the thing I really wanted to do, because I was brought up to believe that education is very important.

Have you got any projects coming up? There’s a lot coming up at the minute I’m looking at a TV show, but I don’t know if it’s going to go through or not. I might be joining a new musical, I sort of dipped my toe in the water with Legally Blonde and War Of The Worlds.

How did you get involved with being a member of Atomic Kitten? I had a singing teacher, Sharon Ashton, who knew Andy McCluskey who wanted to start a girl band and she introduced me to him. I walked in and he said: “You look the part, I want you to be able to sing. So then I did a few little songs for him, and he went: “You’re in!”

How different is it performing in a musical to performing in a band? Being in a musical, the main job is to sing on stage then you are off. Whereas in a band you may have two weeks where you don’t sing because you are doing promotion and branding. Did you ever have any singing lessons? Yes I have them all the time. Even big singers still have coaching because you need to keep on top of things and there might be a new technique you can learn. What’s the best advice you can give to anyone who wants a career in music? The best advice is to have singing lessons and always sing every day because it keeps your voice warm, it’s like exercise. Also if one person in a record company or management says “You’re not for me,” it’s ok as you might be for someone else. I say “Keep on top of it, go to as many people as you can and be in their face.” Before you go on stage do you get nervous? I always get nervous with everything. With Legally Blonde and War Of The Worlds I was nervous most of the time because I had one scene in War Of The Worlds where

“I would say never say never, because we do get on and see each other, but these rumours at the minute they have nothing to do with us, they are just rumours. I would say it could always happen.”

Photo: Gareth Jones

What sort of music influenced you? When I was a kid, everything, because my Dad use to listen to The Beatles, my Mum would listen to The Eagles and Alexander O’Neil. I took a lot of what my Mum and Dad listen to but I had my own mind. In the sense I was a pop kid, loved Boyzone, Take That and Spice Girls, which I still love. Did you have any cat fights while in the band? We always did, we’re girls at the end of the day. They started over something little, then something else came out, they were over nothing major. We always made up afterwards. How did you cope with Kerry’s problems when she left the band? The only way I coped with it was to stand by her, anytime anyone asked me about it. I championed her and said she will come out the other end and she did. Kerry is brilliant now. Are Atomic Kitten ever going to reform? I would say never say never, because we do get on and see each other, but these rumours at the minute they have nothing to do with us, they are just rumours. But I would say it could always happen. Your career highlight so far? And low point? I think my career highlight would be playing for the Queen for her Golden Jubilee and being really high up in charts at the same time. Also finding out we beat U2 to number one with Whole Again. And the low point I would say was when Kerry left. We didn’t know what we were going to do, where we were going to go. It was a really uncertain time.

Your favourite Atomic Kitten song? To perform it would be The Tide Is High, because it gets everyone going and I love the dance routines. Also Someone Like Me, as it was the last song I wrote for the band, it makes me feel proud. Before you went on Master Chef where you any good at cooking? No not one bit, I knew about food, but I didn’t know how to get it from raw ingredients onto the plate. Your top cooking tips? My top cooking tips are if your cooking for yourself, cook whatever you want. I know a lot of people who like to put ketchups in their soups. It’s not a bad thing because a lot of big restaurants use ketchup in their famous dishes. A lot of chefs use it. Don’t be ashamed of what you like to eat. Would you like to open your own restaurant? It would be too hard, I have been offered things. I took over Zilli Fish restaurant for the night, that was crazy, maybe one day. Do you have any charity work coming up? I have loads coming up, I’m doing stuff for Age UK, I like helping the elderly, Cancer Research, because my Mum has cancer. Also I have work for children’s charities and ADHA rape charity, coming up. It’s things that most people wouldn’t support, but I do I like to be a bit different. Is there anything you hate about being in the public eye? Only little things like if I put on a bit of weight on people go: “Oh why’s that?” Or rumours about boyfriends. When I date someone, the next week people think I am engaged. But I know it’s part of the job. Who’s your celebrity crush? Ryan Gosling, I love him. Ryan Gosling is the most beautiful boy ever, he does passionate films. I like passionate films. Who would you like to do a duet with? Ronan Keating, he’s also another celebrity crush. Where do you see yourself in five years time? In a serious relationship and in the West End somewhere after I have done a major film.

THE hunt IS ON

Easter egg hunt kit with five hunt signs and four paper treat holders, £6 each, milk chococlate hollow eggs, £7.99 and bunny ears, £6 each, from Waitrose

No Easter would be complete without the traditional Easter egg hunt, Michelle Rushton explains how to host your own choc-tastic event... WITH the promise of chocolate eggs, family gatherings and a four day weekend, this year’s Easter holiday is certainly one to be egg-cited about, especially if you’re a chocoholic. While Easter has it roots in religion, the occasion also provides a good excuse to indulge your sweet tooth and children can look forward to a visit from the Easter Bunny. As a child, I remember one of the most exciting things about Easter was the thrill of the delicious Easter Egg Hunt. This year why not relive that childish excitement and stage a hunt in a special spot in Liverpool with your closest and dearest this Easter? As either hider or hunter, this game of search and rescue is sure to put smiles on everyone’s faces. First, you need to decide where the event will take place. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden then there’s your answer. But it doesn’t matter if you only have a small backyard – if you look closely you’ll find a myriad of egg-cellent hiding places – little holes in the brickwork, window ledges, behind gnomes, the letterbox – all perfect places to hide eggs! Or why not head to your nearest playground or park? Swings, slides and seesaws are great

hiding places. The fun of going around hiding eggs in all these sneaky places is almost too much to resist and is great for the little ones. Why not combine the hunt with an obstacle course? All you need to do is send some invitations to your guests then stock up on a supply of little chocolate eggs or if you’re feeling egg-stravegant, Easter prizes such as cuddly toys. It’s up to you how complex you want to make the search. You can simply hide the chocolate eggs or create clues to make it harder. For example, you could draw a frog to point towards a pond or draw a distinctive flower or tree. You could have cryptic clues or riddles for older guests. Or you could ask your guests to dress up as Easter bunnies and hop their way around the course. With the great British weather, it might be worth having a contingency plan for staging the hunt indoors, although, fingers crossed, this Easter looks set to be a scorcher. Arm your participants with a basket for collecting the bootie and let them loose. The game doesn’t end till the last one is found! Here’s some egg-sential items to help you stage your hunt...

HAT’S the way to do it! Michelle Rushton finds out how to make sure your Easter bonnet is ahead of the rest... CHILDREN are often asked to make an Easter bonnet for school or nursery and us parents often get asked to lend a hand. But if your Blue Peter days are a distant memory, don’t fear as we’ve picked the creative brains of Kim Laycok, craft workshop leader at Underwater Street indoor discovery centre for children, who has some great ideas of how to ensure your child’s Easter bonnet gets top marks. Kim explained: “Easter hats are traditionally made as a celebration of springtime and whatever style we choose to make them in, they should feature motifs such as flowers, butterflies, fluffy yellow chicks, eggs in nests etc. “Here are a few simple-to-make ideas using materials that can be found around the house. They only take a small amount of preparation time and young people have a lot of fun making and wearing them.”

BUNNY EARS YOU WILL NEED: Sellotape, glue (PVA), scissors, card, coloured tissue or paper, cotton wool

METHOD: Cut a long strip of card about an inch and a half deep to fit around your child’s head. l Draw two ear shapes from card and Sellotape them to the long band a few inches apart so that they sit at the side of the head when complete. l Lay the band with the ears attached on a flat surface to decorate. l

MY CRIB ROCKS

Take small strips of tissue or coloured paper and glue them to the ears leaving a half inch gap all of the way around. l Glue cotton wool to the head band and to the outside of the ears. l Turn the whole headband into a loop and l Sellotape together to fit the head. l

CONTEMPORARY EASTER BONNET YOU WILL NEED: Sellotape, glue, scissors, one large piece of paper/card, coloured paper for cutting into shapes

METHOD: Cut the large piece of card eight inches deep and long enough to fit around your child’s head (remember to add an inch each end to overlap). l Lay the card in front of you and draw a line four inches down along the length of the card. l Mark this line every two inches and cut diagonal lines (to create triangles) from the top of the card to meet the line. This will make the folds for the top of the hat. l Fold the hat into a circle and Sellotape together. l Bring the triangles together to form the top of the hat and use Sellotape to form the flat top of the hat. l Cut strips of paper, flowers, butterflies, egg shapes etc and decorate. Bags of little chicks can be bought cheaply if required. l Should a brim be required, simply cut a larger circle than the hat and fold the circle in half, then cut diagonal lines to the inner edge of the brim so that you are left with a series of triangles when opened out. l Fold the triangles up and Sellotape to the inside of the hat before decorating. l

THERE’S no need to shell out a load of money this Easter holiday to have a cracking good time. Underwater Street Discovery Centre is rolling out a wide range of egg-citing activities for Easter. All week long the talented team at the Centre will be making egg-stravant Easter bonnets, baskets and magnets. Plus there will be some cracking prizes to be won throughout the week and egg-stra fun and games on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday. Don’t miss the Centre’s annual Easter Bingo, Grand Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Bonnet Parade which promise great fun and great prizes. Of course there’ll be all the usual fun activities, shows and workshops too. Entry is free for adults with every full paying child. Underwater Street is based at the Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1DS and is open every day from 10am to 5pm but closed on Easter Sunday. Like MAMA would make Katie McLoughlin gives meat the boot and samples the oceanic delights of Il Forno’s new menu... Photo: Martin Birchall

WITH spag bol being something most of us tuck into on a weekly basis, it’s easy to forget how radical Italian food was when it first arrived in Blighty back in the 1960s. The humble bowl of pasta is something that most of us now consider a staple (except of course for my Irish grandad for whom anything but a spud is exotic). However, what we Brits regard as Italian dishes are often a far cry from the authentic version. So, in search of authentic food just as an Italian mama would make, my friend and I headed to Il Forno on Duke Street. The restaurant is owned by Iliad, but managed by the Cillo family from Naples, who take pride in serving food the traditional way. Now, sadly, when some restaurants say they’re ‘authentic’ what they really mean is chintzy checked tablecloths, half-melted candles stuck in old Chianti bottles and a semi-passable version of tiramisu. Thankfully that’s not the case at Il Forno. In fact there’s not a checked table cloth in sight. Sleek, modern and oh-so-stylish, this Duke Street eatery is very plush and, as my friend and I took our seats in a cosy booth opposite the pizza oven, it was easy to see why so many people had told us to come here. General manager, Donalto, who came to Il Forno after running a family restaurant in his native Italy, is a firm

believer in doing everything in the traditional Italianstyle – from taking pride in the quality of the ingredients, to the choice of olive oil on the tables and the attentive service, no small detail has been forgotten. Such attention to detail is clear throughout and, after whetting our appetite with a prosecco and strawberry cocktail, Donalto brings a Di Gavi white wine to the table. Crisp, fresh and light it was the perfect accompaniment to our upcoming feast from Il Forno’s newlylaunched Friday Fish menu. Launched in March, the Friday Fish Menu showcases another side of Italian cuisine, as Donalto explains: “Almost every part of Italy touches the sea, so we serve lots of seafood there, making use of the best vegetables that are in season to create something simple but beautiful.” And that’s what Italian cuisine is all about – using the best ingredients around to create simple dishes, made with love, which let the flavours of the ingredients shine through. We began our gastronomic journey across Italy with freshly baked garlic bread drizzled in olive oil and deliciously salty slithers of carved Parma ham with rocket, before head chef Paolo (Donalto’s younger brother) brings out the first of many fish dishes for us to try. We start with scallops wrapped in pancetta with asparagus, porcini mushrooms and saffron risotto. And, for our second dish, king prawns, sweet clams, mussels and – something which I never expected to eat in an Italian restaurant – mashed potato (my grandad would approve!). Paolo explained: “My city was a very poor region 20 years ago, but we had a lot of potatoes and, because we’re close to the sea, a lot of seafood. So we ate a lot of fresh fish, simply prepared with a little olive oil, a little pepper – something like this potato dish. We also have a lot of pancetta, so this scallop dish is quite traditional with some rice, some saffron, asparagus and porcini. We take pride in using the best of the produce available to create something simple but beautiful.” Doing anything more than putting butter on your spuds can be seen as sacrilege in my mum’s house, but I’m now a convert to the Italian way of making mash. Paolo had

STEAK OUT AT SAPPORO

THINK Japanese food and you’re more likely to conjure up images of sushi than steak. But, go to Sapporo Teppanyaki on a Monday, and you’ll find that steak is very much a part of Japanese cuisine. The Duke Street restaurant has launched a new, Monday Steak Night, which will see carnivores enjoy a 7oz sirloin steak cooked the Japanese way – on a teppan griddle. Cooked before your eyes by a teppanyaki chef, all steaks come with sauté potatoes, stir-fried vegetables, egg fried rice and a bottle of beer or glass of wine for just £13.50 per person. As well as enjoying high quality steak cooked to perfection, guests will be treated to the whole teppanyaki experience, with their own personal chef combined with the drama of theatrical food preparation. simply mashed the potatoes with a little tomato, onion and olive oil and the result was a deliciously light, fluffy and tasty accompaniment to the succulent seafood. The saffron risotto, meanwhile, was beautifully creamy, while the scallops were moist and deliciously flavoured with pancetta, rosemary and garlic. Next came the pasta course – a bowl of delectable gnocchi. Light, fluffy and cooked al dente, the gnocchi were like little clouds smothered in a simple yet intensely flavoured saffron sauce, with basil pesto drizzled around the plate and a huge, simply grilled king prawn on top. Our next dish was a whole sea bream baked in a sea salt crust. “The salt crust keeps all the juices in and makes the fish very moist – it’s a very simple dish and makes the most of the natural flavour of the fish,” explained Paolo. As well as sealing in all those lovely flavours, the salt crust brings a bit of theatre to the dining experience as it’s broken off at the table. Simple but divine, the sea bream, which was served with carrots, broccoli and green beans and a drizzle of fruity olive oil, was not overpowered by the salt crust it was baked in, just beautifully seasoned and moist. A light and delicious dish, we swiftly devoured it, thinking, wrongly I may add, that it was our last dish. Next came a whole baked turbot. The turbot was roasted in olive oil with slices of potato, cherry tomatoes, sliced red onion, artichoke, capers and olives, which Paolo explained, is a traditional way of cooking fish in the Calabria region. To finish, Donalto presented us with a platter of desserts and ice cream – all of which are handmade. The platter included desserts from throughout Italy, such as a Nutella chocolate sponge, a pineapple and almond sponge, biscotti biscuits, amaretti biscuits, an almond pie, a nut ice cream and an apple and ginger ice cream. The final course was accompanied by a Muscat wine, a wine which, Donalto says: “Is a marriage made in heaven with dessert.” Mama mia! Titanic events

APRIL 12

A ship to remember... A century on from the sinking of the Titanic, Paul Baker looks at the events staged in the city this month to commemorate its anniversary AT 11.40pm on April 14, 1912, RMS Titanic hit an iceberg in the icy waters off Newfoundland. The ship was four days into its crossing to New York. Over the following two and a half hours, the ship filled with water, broke apart and sank at around 2.20am on the morning of April 15, with more than a thousand souls still on board. Of the 2,200 plus passengers who sailed, only 710 survived. This month marks 100 years since the disaster happened. Towns and cities throughout Europe, connected with the Titanic’s story, will be commemorating the anniversary of the ship’s sinking. Liverpool joins with Southampton, Halifax, Cherbourg (France), Belfast (Northern Ireland) and Cobh (County Cork, Ireland) to pay its respects. Liverpool is where the ship was registered, by its owners, White Star Line, who had offices at Albion House, on the corner of James Street and The Strand in the city centre. Liverpool’s name was also proudly emblazoned on the Titanic’s stern. Fittingly, this month, the city will play host to a full programme of events remembering the loss of the great ship...

LIVERPOOL’S Anglican Cathedral invite all to join a service commemorating the anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking. The service will take place in Liverpool Cathedral on Sunday, April 15, from 7.30-8.30pm. The Bishop of Liverpool will lead this civic service which will include contributions from the Maritime Liverpool Women’s History Group offering a soundscape bringing to life aspects of the Titanic’s tragic story and reflecting Liverpool’s relationship with ships and the sea. Entry to the cathedral, the service, and car parking is free. See www.liverpoolcathedral.org.uk for more information.

Other events round-up... FLOWERS FOR THE TITANIC FESTIVAL ST FRANCIS Xavier RC Church will be holding a flower festival based around photographs taken on board the Titanic by Fr Browne SJ. Enjoy the festival from April 20-21, 10am to 4pm each day.

THE centrepiece of Liverpool’s Titanic remembrance comes in the shape of the spectacular telling of a tale of a giant little girl. This 30ft high marionette, along with her 50ft high uncle, will journey through the city on an unforgettable and emotional journey of love, loss and reunion. Their story is inspired by an emotional letter in the Merseyside Maritime Museum written by a young girl whose father was a passenger on the Titanic. The city loved La Princesse, the huge spider that descended on Liverpool in 2008, and Sea Odyssey, which will run at key locations across Liverpool from April 20-22, looks set to top even that. Visit www.giantspectacular.com for more information.
