LOVE is in the air as February 14th approaches and Cupid must have fired his bow at Best of Liverpool HQ as we have come over all misty-eyed. In this edition, we bring you some great ideas of how to tug your loved one’s heartstrings, from lovely lingerie for her to how to dress like a romantic hero for him. We have compiled a page of love gifts and a list of hot venues in the city which are perfect for Valentine’s rendezvous. But if you’d rather stay closer to home, then we have found you a delicious dessert which you can make for your soue mate and we also have some inspirational home accessories to transform your bedroom into a romantic boudoir. If you really want to push the boat out, why not whisk your partner away for a spa break or further afield to a romantic city? There’s a growing furore about Burlesque following the recent movie, so we decided to find out what the fuss is about and sent our Sarah to discover her inner glamour puss at a burlesque workshop and pamper day. See how she got on on page 15. We also catch up with Liverpool’s
own burlesque beauty, Millie Dollar who makes us feel decidedly dowdy. And we found time to speak to Scouse sweetheart, Claire Sweeney, who’s starring in a new series, Candy Cabs. Why should the girls have all the fun? Paul Baker plumped for some pampering of a marine variety, when he tried a fish pedicure. VIVA Brazil Churrascaria on Castle Street has raised over £5,000 for Zoe’s Place Children’s Hospice during a charity evening hosted by Liverpool icon, Ricky Tomlinson. The restaurant was filled with the sounds of South America, as guests watched a carnival of samba dancers and drummers, while tucking into meat carved at their tables. Guests enjoyed live performances from comedians Ricky Tomlinson and Gary Skyner. A charity auction also took place on the evening to raise money for the hospice, which provides support for families with young children who require 24 hours care. Ricky Tomlinson says: “I really enjoyed the event organised by Viva Brazil, who chose to support such a wonderful charity in Zoe’s Place. The work they do and the support they
provide for the children and their families really does deserve recognition." Guests on the night included Jude and Jamie Bickley, whose three-yearold daughter Olivia is a regular patient at the hospice. Jude says: “We would be lost without their ongoing support which is why charity events like this are so vital in helping keep the service going.”

PUCKER UP FOR CHARITY EVERYONE hopes for a kiss on Valentine’s Day, but managers at St John’s Shopping Centre are hoping for thousands of them this February. St John’s Shopping Centre will host the British Red Cross’ attempt to beat the world record for the number of lipstick imprints in one place in 12 hours on Saturday, February 12. The existing record of 2,302 kisses was set in Istanbul in 2010 and centre bosses are hoping that everyone in Liverpool will help to both smash the record and raise funds for charity. The first 2,000 people taking part will be given a free lipstick
and asked to make their impression on hundreds of Big Red Kiss cards to be displayed outside The Perfume Shop on the lower mall. The best lip impression will win a romantic weekend for two in Paris. Participants will be asked to donate £1 to the British Red Cross who will be on hand throughout the day to give lessons on how to give the Kiss of Life and how to perform CPR in an emergency.

The talented (and some not so talented!) performers were auditioning for hit TV show Britain’s Got Talent. The auditionees showcased their skills in front of TV cameras, a packed auditorium and a celebrity judging panel with Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, comedian Michael McIntyre and TV star Amanda Holden. Loveable celebrity duo Ant and Dec were also on hand to oversee the proceedings, guiding the wannabe stars through the nerve wracking audition process.

LITTLE FACE OF MERSEYSIDE A NATIONWIDE photography company is searching for a ‘little face’ from Merseyside to represent its brand. Venture Photography, on Rodney Street in Liverpool city centre, has launched its search for the Little Face of Venture and local studio owner, Pamela Morris, hopes that she’ll find the winner in Merseyside. She explains: “We want to find a 0-10-year-old who represents what we stand for as a brand. LUCKY SHOPPER A SIMPLE visit to the local supermarket turned out to be a very worthwhile occasion for one Toxteth resident recently. Amanda Ranson was one of hundreds of shoppers who entered into the free prize draw to win a voucher for £1,000 worth of car accessories as part of Renault Liverpool’s recent display event. She says: “I was shocked when I found out and at first I didn’t believe it! It’s lovely to have won though and I already own a Renault so I’m looking forward to spending the voucher on accessories for it.”
A NEW Liverpool comedy written by and starring one of the writers of Phoenix Nights was premiered recently at the Showcase Cinema and will go nationwide this month. Following the premiere, a host of celebrities attended the VIP launch of Charlie Noades RIP at Sakura. The film was shot entirely on location on Merseyside and stars the two times British Comedy Award winning actor and writer Neil Fitzmaurice also famed for his roles in Peep Show and the Office, as well as an impressive line up of respected names from John Thompson and Dave Spikey, as well as Liverpool’s own Suzanne Collins, Micky Finn, Ozzie Yue and Pauline Daniels. LARKING AROUND A TELEVISION crew from ITV recently took over Lark’s vintage boutique on Lark Lane to film a new show, Auction Party. Shop owner, Phil Southall, explains: “The programme involves two teams who have a £250 budget to buy vintage and old furniture, re-vamp it, then take it to auction in the hope of making a profit. The proceeds are donated to their chosen charity.” He adds: “The crew and contestants were delighted with Larks' vintage section on the top floor of the shop. They said they were bowled over by the shop and that it was perfect for the programme with its eclectic mix and beautiful one off pieces. “The teams were given a week to 'upcycle' their pieces which went to auction at Liverpool Town Hall.” The programme will be shown in March.

FOR some top tips on Valentine's Day fashion, we caught up with Steph Rooney from The Dressing Room.... WHETHER you're going on a hot date with a new beau or a romantic dinner with your husband, you'll no doubt want to knock his socks off this Valentine's Day. But dressing to impress isn't always easy and if you're struggling to decide what to wear, Liverpool style-queen and owner of city centre ladies’ boutique The Dressing Room, Steph Rooney, is on hand with some expert advice. “Go for a style which suits your body shape and you are comfortable with,”

Steph advises. “Don't follow a trend and end up looking like a fashion victim. This season, there's lots of choice with 70s flower power influences, longer hemlines — sorry boys! — and feminine glamour so hopefully everyone will be pleased. “Feeling comfortable and looking good will give you confidence and hopefully start your date off on the right foot! “For a dinner date I would probably go for something with shoulder detailing, as there's lots of emphasis on cut out shoulders and necklines around at the moment.
"A maxi dress is also ideal. It looks great and is easy to wear — plus it saves the hassle of worrying about tanned legs! Just stay clear of cut out detailing on the waist or anything too structured unless your planning on skipping dinner!” And what about those difficult first dates? “This is one of the most frequent questions that I get asked by my clients!” laughs Steph. “Firstly I would say don't be too extravagant on your first date, for instance massive ruffles are a no go. "But it's important you dress for yourself. I'm a girls' girl so I like getting dressed up and feeling glam,

The Doctor Fish will see you now... Paul Baker makes a splash with the spa craze that’s sweeping the nation as he tests out a fish pedicure at Sakinsu on Bold Street IT was on an unusually mild winter’s afternoon that I wended my way through Liverpool’s lunchtime shoppers in order to find a rather intriguing species of marine life that has recently arrived in the city centre. Sakinsu on Bold Street was my destination, one of a growing number of fish spas opening around the country, and the aquatic animals in question are called Garra Rufa or Doctor Fish. The idea is that these little fishies will nibble off all the dead skin on your feet leaving them smooth, but the proof is in the pudding. Welcomed by owner Mark Hancock, he explains that each 150 litre tank has 125 Doctor Fish in. Each tank is fitted with its own UV light and separate filtering system to clean the water. I’m invited by Mike, the shop manager, to put my shoes and socks into a basket and then to bathe my feet in a warm footbath before they’re ready to take the plunge with the Garra Rufa. Apparently our very own X Factor runner-up, Rebecca Ferguson, came
in just before Christmas and sampled the spa, so I’m in celebrity company. As I take my seat the fish are already moving towards their next meal. They obviously learn fast; Mike said that when they first opened some of the fish tended to jump out of the tanks once feet were introduced, but no more – feet mean a square meal to these critters! So, there’s nothing for it but to submerge and see what happens. Immediately I’m lightly tickled by tens of little fishies. It’s not a feeding frenzy though, there’s more than enough footage to go round and after your mind gets over the wonder of what you’re doing, it’s quite a relaxing experience. Now, putting your feet into a tank with 125 hungry fish may not sound like fun to everyone, but I actually found it really enjoyable. For a start, the fish are toothless and they merely suck the dead skin from your feet. They do seem to flock to the areas where your skin will be roughest or sorest, such as the heel and ball of your foot. Plus, if you have skin disorders such
as psoriasis or eczema, it’s supposed to help. But once your feet are swimming with the fishes, you forget about any potential health benefits and stare in amazement at these two inch Doctor Fish as they go about their business and grab a take-away lunch. I particularly enjoyed keeping an eye on one fish the staff have nicknamed ‘Jaws’ who is the biggest fish they have at Sakinsu and gets his pick of the best places to dine! A 15 minute session at Sakinsu costs £10, while 30 minutes costs £18. They even offer group bookings and special hen party packages. The only thing to bear in mind is that you can’t use the fish spa if you have verucas, fungal infections or if you are wearing fake tan on your legs. If in doubt, you’re best off giving the spa a call to check before you head over there. Sakinsu offers a great experience and when there’s a group of people in there it’s even more fun as the atmosphere gets almost as bubbly as the water. Give it a try – and say hello to Jaws from me!

Emma Thompson gets some motivational tips on how to banish those love handles MANY of us started 2011 with big plans of losing weight and eating healthily, but if your regime has started to lag, fear not, we’ve caught up with Phil Fisher from Achievement Sports to give you some motivational tips. Phil began as a fitness instructor and is now the managing director of Achievement Sports which runs courses to help people become sports instructors. He said: “When February comes along a lot of people start to slip with their exercise because they haven’t seen an instant stone weight loss. But this is the time you need to remember your initial goals and keep going.”
Here is Phil’s advice: Make a list of your goals, whether you want to lose weight, tone up or build-up muscle, and stick the list on your fridge. This is often the best place as it might stop you reaching for that extra cake or chocolate bar! It’s a constant reminder of what you want to achieve. ● Set yourself a target, people in Liverpool love going to Aintree races, and there’s only a couple of months of exercising to make sure you fit into those stunning dresses, so keep focused on what you’re working towards. ● If you’re getting bored with the gym equipment, mix it up and add variety to your routine. Zumba classes are huge at the moment, they’re really fun and different plus give you a good work out. Try the different classes in the gym and you might find one you really enjoy. ● You’re often given a programme to follow by the instructor when you join a gym, so don’t be afraid to go back every four/six weeks and get them to update it. Many people stick to the same machinery time after time so it’s easy to get bored. Try different gym machines each time you go. ● If you can’t afford to join a gym, see how much it is to go to a couple of different classes such as body pump and body combat which can often be cheaper. ● It’s been said before but going for a good walk with the kids in a local park, even just over the weekend, all adds to your exercise. Things such as not taking the lift and using stairs, getting off the bus a couple of stops earlier are little differences that might just help you shift those few extra pounds each month. ●

One local photographer aims to help you rediscover your beauty and claims to have a totally different approach. Zoe Richards is the lead photographer at Hope Street-based Zoe Photography She says: “We have made a pledge to treat our clients in an ethical manner and we want to raise awareness so that people can spot the pressure sales techniques and know how to avoid them. “We were appalled to hear stories from so many people who believe they have been conned into having a photo shoot with a little tipple to help lower their guard so they spend ridiculous amounts on photographs and we decided to do something about it. “We won’t use pressure sales techniques and won’t give you alcohol or offer a promotion to make you spend more – all our offers are genuine.” Zoe, who has also set up City Girl Makeover Photoshoots, adds: “Our
photoshoots aren’t just for people who want to become models. We offer the whole model experience for everyday people. We had a lady who wanted the Gok Wan style ‘How to Look Good Naked’ and she did a naked photo shoot which was really tasteful and looked lovely. “We want to help remind women, who’ve maybe changed with age or had babies, that they’re still beautiful. “We also take photos of women who are aiming to join the modelling world. It’s a tough industry but we aim to start them on their way with an ethical approach. “It’s something I’m passionate about and I really want people to enjoy their photoshoot experience so we don’t push people in to buying loads of photos they can’t afford. WE caught up with one of Zoe’s clients, Amanda Carney, to find out about her experience in front of the camera. “I loved the model photoshoot experience,” beams Amanda. “I’d never done a photoshoot before, but it all started when my friends had one taken in Manchester, they had a lovely time, got a full makeover and then they airbrushed the pictures to get rid of any lines and wrinkles. "But after a few weeks my friends realised it didn’t really look like them, so I wanted to find someone who could capture me, while still making me look my best in locations around the city so it would be more like artwork rather than just a picture of me.” After a lot of searching, Amanda discovered Zoe Photography, and explained that she didn’t want airbrushed studio photos but rather images of her in Liverpool locations. Amanda reveals: “I went to see Zoe and explained what I wanted, but as I’d never had a photoshoot done before I didn’t know what to expect. You need to be able to trust your photographer and Zoe really welcomed me and made me feel at ease. “She also gave me some advice beforehand, such as cleansing and toning to make your skin look its best, and not to wear clothing that can leave lines as well as bringing a few outfits for the day. “On the day, it was like you would imagine a proper photoshoot would be with someone doing your make-up and hair. All my pictures were taken out on location, so we went to landmarks around Liverpool such as St George’s Hall and the Georgian Quarter of the city, including the cathedrals.” She continues: “It was a great opportunity to capture yourself looking your best. I took the pictures back to show the girls and they loved them; it makes you feel like a bit of a model. “I enjoyed the experience so much that me and a few friends have booked in for May and we’re going to make a big ladies’ day of it, getting our hair and make-up done, then doing the shoot with all of us in the photos. “Zoe made me feel really relaxed and by the end I felt as if I knew her. She delivered exactly what I wanted and more.”

EVER since pictures of Dita Von Teese frolicking in a 4ft Martini glass were splashed across the newspapers, I've been enchanted by the glamorous world of burlesque. So when an invitation to attend The Martini Lounge's burlesque workshop and vintage pamper day followed by its glitzy burlesque show at St George's Hall landed on my desk, I jumped at the chance to go along. The workshop — held in the suitably glam top floor room in Heebie Jeebies on Seel Street — is a four hour pamper fest of retro hair and make-up, together with a beginner's introduction to burlesque dance. And as my friend and I made our way up to join the group we were a mixture of nerves and excitement. “Will we have to take our clothes off ?” she asks half-jokingly. I assure her we won't. Probably. But all the same I'm starting to wonder what I've got us into. After all, stockings and nipple tassels were not a look I was intending to sport any time soon. Walking in, however, it's clear we needn't have worried. The vintage workshop – hosted by Merseyside retro pamper-party specialists Betty Bee and Lilly Von Pink — is full of giggling women, and Betty and Lilly greet us like old friends. Within minutes we're sat down with a cup of tea served in dainty vintage tea-cups and Lilly asks us to take out our travel mirrors for the first activity of the day — a master-class in Hollywood make-up. A real insight into the tricks and trade secrets of vintage beauty, Lilly expertly shows us the best way to apply flawless foundation and French flicks, as well as trademark pillar-box red lips that are good enough to make Greta Garbo green with envy. There's just time for a slice of home-made Victoria sponge (washed down with a Sailor Jerry's for courage) before our burlesque workshop begins. Our teacher — and international burlesque star — Beeby Rose, looks every inch the Hollywood starlet and we watch in amazement as she effortlessly shimmies and shakes her way across the floor. Instructing us to follow her lead, we learn a basic burlesque routine and master the art of removing stockings. And, while our own efforts might not be quite so alluring, the group share many a laugh while we attempt to become budding burlesque dancers. By now the afternoon's almost up, and we watch as Lilly demonstrates how to create expertly coiffured victory rolls, before we each have our hair professionally styled (victory rolls and big curls for me). As I catch a glimpse of my glamorous

new look I can't stop smiling, and as the workshop ends we jump in a taxi to finish the evening off in style at The Martini Lounge's Burlesque Show. Our earlier introduction to the art of tease has left us bubbling with excitement and The Martini Lounge doesn't disappoint. Set in the spectacular surroundings of St George's Hall, the show has attracted a loyal legion of fans since opening in 2007 and is quite rightly considered one of the best burlesque shows in the region. Taking our seats in the hall's opulent concert room, we tuck into a delicious two course pre-show dinner and admire the impressive chandelier, glass ceiling and lavish golden carvings. As dinner guests, we're also treated to an exclusive pre-show performance from Liverpool's own burlesque-queen Millie Dollar, and by the time the show begins, the room is buzzing with anticipation. Our compere for the evening, Fred Bear, is hilarious from start to finish and the audience lap up sultry performances from Millie Dollar, Beau Rocks and Beeby Rose. Full of feather fans and jewel-encrusted corsets, the acts are every bit as glamorous as we'd hoped. Plus with music from the charmingly funny Barbieshop Quartet, and comedy acts from Fred Bear along with his two accomplices – Neil and Simon Bear – the show is the perfect balance of extravagance, laughter and entertainment. Leaving the hall, we're still giddy on our overdose of glamour and as we practise our burlesque walks all the way to the train station, we both agree it won't be long before we're back...

MILLIE DOLLAR babe Sue Kelbrick meets a Liverpool beauty and rising star of burlesque IT is 8.30am on a blustery January morning. I have barely wiped the sleep from my eyes and have a really bad case of bed hair but, as I look up blearily at my interviewee, I am greeted by a vision of loveliness. Perfectly coiffeured, even at this ungodly hour of the morning, Millie Dollar is most definitely ready for her close up. Just 25 but already a veteran of the burlesque scene, Millie has been performing for more than six years and even though everyone is now familiar with the beauty, style and finesse of burlesque, when she started out, many people didn’t know what it was and she had to work hard to gain acceptance. Six years on and she has the world at her feet. I caught up with her in the middle of rehearsals for her next acclaimed Martini Lounge show, a Valentine’s special, which is on St George’s Hall on February 25. So what can we expect from her latest show? “We’ve decided to go back to our roots, paying homage to vaudeville and variety with a fabulous selection of acts from burlesque to singers to a magic act and everything in between,” says Millie. “We’re really excited about all of the guests on the bill and it looks set to be the best show we’ve done so far.” Guests already confirmed include the up and coming burlesque star, Anna Fur Laxis, internationally acclaimed magician Paul Dabek, comedy diva, Mysti Vine and talented jazz and blues songstress, Coco Malone. Proceedings will be compered by the incomparable and infamous Fred Bear and star of the show will, of course, be Millie Dollar herself whose performances really have to be seen to be believed. They have a great sense of humour and I know that they'll take whatever the performance throws at them in just the right spirit” Quietly spoken but not afraid to speak her mind, it is this apparent contradiction which makes Millie so fascinating as a performer. In person, she comes across as meek and mild and almost shy, and yet on stage, she simply oozes confidence and sex appeal, strutting across the stage with energy and finesse. Millie admits that when she started out, she used her performances to express herself in a way that she would never do in everyday life. She reflects: “As a child we travelled around a lot moving from Liverpool to Australia then to Glasgow and back to Liverpool. I found it difficult to make friends and I was quite shy so I became interested in burlesque almost as a way of escaping from reality. “My mum was really into vintage clothes from the 1940s and 1950s and I grew up listening to music from that era. I loved the glamour of the screen sirens from this time and used to practise strip tease in my bedroom. I didn’t know it at the time but that was the start of my love affair with all things burlesque!” Millie has devoted her life to professional burlesque, from performing and modelling to making costumes, for herself and for other performers, and it is this complete dedication to her art which has helped her to gain such an enviable reputation both from within and outside the industry. Despite gaining international acclaim, Millie hasn't forgotten her roots and loves performing in her home town. She says, “I love the audiences in Liverpool. They have a great sense of humour and I know that they'll take whatever the performance throws at them in just the right spirit.” The future is certainly looking bright for the Liverpool-born star. So what does the future hold for her?

She thinks for a moment and then replies: “Right now, I’m focusing on making sure we produce the best show possible for The Martini Lounge, but looking further ahead I’d like to do a burlesque tour in the US. Las Vegas style ‘Bump and Grind’. So why does Millie think burlesque has become so popular in recent years? “I think that burlesque is almost an antidote to the extremes of celebrity culture we see today,” she explains. “It harks back to a more glamorous time when stars were never seen stumbling drunkenly out of nightclubs or pictured in their pyjamas walking to the corner shop. People crave a bit of glamour and burlesque certainly delivers on that front!” Millie started out at Korova in Liverpool where her amazing performances and lavish costumes soon got people talking. From here, she developed her routine touring throughout the British Isles before taking on the world with performances in Paris, St Tropez, Milan and Los Angeles to name a few.

CANDY GIRL With a one-woman stage show, Tell Me On A Sunday, and a starring role in new BBC production, Candy Cabs, life is certainly sweet for Claire Sweeney. Emma Thompson finds out more... LIVERPOOL’S Claire Sweeney is set to hit our screens this month in a fabulous new comedy, Candy Cabs. With a top cast including ex-Hollyoaks’ Ricky Whittle, comedy star Lisa Millett, EastEnders’ Jo Joyner (Tanya) and Loose Women’s Jodie Prenger, this three-part BBC1 series is sure to hit all the right notes, especially as it’s put together by Liverpool script writers, Johanne McAndrew and Elliot Hope. Candy Cabs is about an unlikely pair of Northern women who embark on a business adventure and start up a taxi company run by women, for women. Of course, the road to becoming an entrepreneur never runs smoothly, and it’s not long before personal

obstacles get in the way of their professional dreams. “I think it’ll be fabulous, we all had a ball during filming,” says Claire. “There is a fantastic group of girls in the show, as well as Ricky who’s gorgeous! I play Amanda, who is a bit of a man-eater. In the first BBC trailer she’s says: ‘It’s cougar-time’, so she’s quite a character but you’ll see she’s got a vulnerable side too.” She adds: “The script is brilliant. The writing by fellow Scousers Johanne and Elliot is so funny, so hopefully we’ll get to do a second series because we all had such a great time.”

Its always great performing to a home crowd” Having just jetted back from a holiday in Barbados with Pete Price and Cilla Black, Claire was straight into rehearsals on the same day for her acclaimed one-woman stage show Tell Me On A Sunday. Claire received rave reviews last year for the show, and this musical production – with music from Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Don Black – is set to continue touring this month making its way to the Liverpool Empire Theatre in April. “It’s a one-woman show about an English girl who heads to New York looking for success and love in all the wrong places!” reveals Claire. “With 28 Andrew Lloyd Webber songs to sing it’s a real test, and when I’m performing I live like a nun,” she admits. “I have to be really disciplined because there’s only me on stage, so all eyes are on me for the whole performance, but it’s a great show to do." She adds: “I can’t wait until April, I love coming back to Liverpool and it’ll be fab entertaining at the Empire. Plus it’s my birthday that week so it’ll be a really special occasion! “It’s always great performing to a home crowd, I’d love to do a panto at the Empire – it would be so much fun.” Claire grew up in Walton and her love of singing
and music stemmed from attending school choir and going to church. By the age of 14 she was performing in local pubs, such as the Montrose Club while going to stage school in Rodney Street. She has enjoyed success on screen and stage performing as Roxie Hart in Chicago, headlining in Fosse, playing Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls opposite Patrick Swayze and in 2008, she starred in the first UK production of Shout. On screen, Lindsey Corkhill in Brookside is the role many people remember Claire for, but she’s also appeared on Loose Women, Strictly Come Dancing, 60 Minute Makeover, Clocking Off and Merseybeat, to name but a few. “It’s nice to have been able to achieve most of my dreams,” says Claire. “I love the combination of stage and screen work as they’re so different.” Claire has also been busy launching her own jewellery collection, and is now in talks with a Northern company to create her own clothing line. ONES TO WATCH MICHELLE PEVIE FASHION designer Michelle Pevie only graduated from John Moore’s University last July but already she is setting the fashion world alight. Her collection was shown on the runways of London Graduate Fashion Week and her clothes have also been on display in Liverpool ONE. Last October she won the North West Designer of the Year award 2010 at The Triangle in Manchester and recently she took part in the highly successful Liverpool Design Festival where she received some fabulous feedback from fellow designers and fashionistas alike. More recently she has been working with photographer, Karl Axon to produce some fantastic images taken in and around Liverpool, to illustrate her latest collection. TELL TALE THEATRE COMPANY CREATED by drama specialists Emma Smith and Leanne Jones, the Tell Tale Theatre Company is a newly launched community theatre with its first production planned for next month. The theatre group meets weekly and is made up of 15 Merseyside adults many of whom have never performed on stage before but all share the same desire to be involved in their local community and perform their production in front of an audience. Director Emma is excited about what the future holds saying: “We have a wonderful group of talented, creative and committed adults from Merseyside. It is a delight to work with them and watch them grow. They have come so far in just a few short months.” The group is supported by Phil Redmond’s Open Culture organisation. DANIEL WHITTAKER IT’S a dream come true for West Derby teenager, Daniel Whittaker, whose sister sent pictures of him to model agency, Pulse who immediately snapped him up. He’s now been chosen as the new face of Milan-based fashion giants, Dolce and Gabbana and Versace. Daniel’s only been modelling for 12 months but during that time the 6 foot 3 inch model has fronted a number of runway shows and modelled for a variety of high profile fashion campaigns. His most recent assignment saw him shooting with male model clothing line Onitsuka Tiger. And he is now set to make the biggest step of his career so far with a move to Milan, something which he said he is nervous about but also very excited. Daniel says: “I can’t quite believe this is happening. It’s all been such a whirlwind. Milan is one of the fashion capitals of the world so it’s an honour to be asked to work there.”

THERE are over 70 parks to choose from in Liverpool so why not get some fresh air this half term and get the kids out and about? Liverpool Rangers organise loads of fabulous events throughout the year with a number of special family events being held over half term. CHILDREN never tire of learning about the mysteries of ancient Egypt so for a fabulous day out of family fun, check out Tutankhamun: His Tomb and His Treasures which is running at the Museum of Museums at the Trafford Centre Manchester until March 26. Valentine’s Day TART FROM THE HEART Michelle Rushton shares a delicious Valentine's Day dessert which is guaranteed to sweeten up your loved one
FOOD OF love Michelle Rushton spices up her love life with a meal at Mayur IT is a well known fact that spicy food can be an aphrodisiac, so with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, my partner and I headed to Mayur for a romantic meal for two. Working full-time and being parents of a very lively toddler, Mike and I don’t get to go out much as a couple these days, so having secured the babysitting services of a good friend, it felt very decadent to be out on a well deserved date! And Mayur is certainly to be admired. Walking into the Indian eatery on Duke Street, we were impressed with the opulent decor featuring chic chandeliers and plush, patterned wallpaper. Mayur really is a touch of class but even though the weather was frosty outside, we received a warm welcome inside. The friendly maitre d' showed us to our table and brought us some complimentary appetisers to nibble on while we perused the impressive a la carte menu. Mayur offers a taste of authentic Indian cuisine, with lots of healthy dishes using the Tandoor oven to cook bread, fish, meat and game in the typical North West Indian style which is low in oils and fat. It is definitely the place to try something different. Enjoying the papad and chutneys, the waiter served our drinks – a pint of Cobra for Mike and a nonalcoholic mojito cocktail for me as I am ‘with child!’ Cobra is always Mike’s favourite tipple so he was already onto a winner and I have to say that what my mojito lacked in spirits, it certainly made up for in flavour as it was so lovely and refreshing, I would choose to drink it anytime! As we were having difficulty decided on starters, the waiter recommended we try the chef’s starter platter for two which gave us the chance to try a little bit of everything from Methi Machchi Tikka, chunks of salmon with fenugreek leaves, yoghurt and spices, grilled in the clay oven to Barrah Champ, lamb marinated in crushed garlic, cloves, coriander, degi chilli and yoghurt and Bhatti Murg chicken cubes in a spiced yoghurt marinade. The starters were absolutely superb and certainly whett our appetite for our forthcoming mains. A real fish lover, Mike opted for the Machali Neelgiri – monkfish simmered in a green herb curry of coconut, chillies, coriander and roasted spices. A speciality from

Southern India, Mike savoured every mouthful and is still telling everyone how tasty it was! Meanwhile, I plumped for the Elaichi Ka Bhuna Gosht – diced lamb steeped overnight in whole spices and ginger-garlic juice, pot roasted in a flavoursome and full-bodied cardamom flavoured spicy masala. It was absolutely delicious – the sauce was tangy and had the right amount of spice, while the lamb was so tender just melted in my mouth. Our meals were served with pilau rice and beautiful homemade peshwari and garlic naan breads. We finished our meal with a refreshing fruity sorbet, just the thing to cleanse our palates. It came as no surprise to us that Mayur was nominated for Gordon Ramsay’s Best Restaurant 2010 and was awarded the Best Newcomer for 2008-2009 by Cheshire/Lancashire Life. SPECIAL diets are no barrier to a romantic meal this Valentine’s Day, thanks to Dietary Specials Dietary Specials (DS) which specialises in gluten free and wheat free food. Having to follow a special diet sometimes means that people feel they are missing out on tasty treats, but foodlovers with an allergy or intolerance to gluten or wheat will be pleased to hear that the experts at DS gluten free have come up with a great love-themed recipe which will keep the romance alive and the tummy troubles away. This tart is perfect for those with a sweet tooth. Let this delicious dessert do the talking by serving it alone or complete with a good spoonful of crème fraiche or Greek yoghurt. Raspberry Passion Fruit Heart Tarts (makes two) Ingredients: ● 1 200g block DS gluten free shortcrust pastry, defrosted ● 5 tbsp mascarpone cream cheese ● 2 tbsp chilled gluten free custard ● 75g icing sugar, sieved ● 1 tsp natural extract of vanilla Topping: 110g fresh raspberries 1 passion fruit, ripe Method: ● Place the pastry on a work surface lightly dusted with gluten free flour or cornflour and knead for one minute until completely smooth. ● Roll the pastry out to the thickness of a £1 coin then divide in half. Roll out one piece, place over the rolling pin and transfer to an individual heart shaped or round loose base flan tin, approximately 10cm in diameter. ● Gently push the pastry into place and roll the rolling pin across the top to remove any excess pastry. Repeat with second pastry piece. ● Line the tins with non stick baking paper (parchment or bakewell). Fill with baking beans or rice to weigh down the paper. ● Place the flan tins on a baking sheet and cook for 10 minutes at oven temperature 200°C /180°C Fan/ Gas mark 6. Remove baking beans and return to the oven for a further 5-8 minutes until the pastry is crisp and starting to lightly brown. Set aside to cool. ● To prepare the filling, combine the mascarpone and readymade custard with icing sugar and extract of vanilla using a wooden spoon until smooth. ● When ready to serve, spoon the filling into the pastry shells. Halve the passion fruit and spoon the scooped out flesh evenly over the cream filling. Top with the raspberries and serve. Note: Any leftover pastry can be wrapped, chilled and used within three days. Allow to return to room temperature before using. These desserts are not suitable for home freezing.

DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER Katie McLoughlin meets the Liverpool-based co-founder of a new dating site — because even Cupid needs a helping hand sometimes... SOME people are destined to be together, so when fate played a big part in bringing Liverpool-based Louise Roper and her husband together, she decided to launch a website to help people take charge of their own destiny. Louise developed dating site, Fatepod.com, after meeting husband, Stephen,
through a chance encounter. She explains: “We went to the same university but never got together. We eventually got together a couple of years later when a mutual friend invited us both on a trip to Dublin. “Fate makes you go to a certain place at a certain time and the website aims to help people connect and give fate a helping hand.” Launched in September, Fatepod gives you a second chance to connect with someone you’ve met but didn’t have the confidence to ask out at the time by registering the encounter on the site to see if they respond. THIS month, the city’s Chinese community will be celebrating the start of the new year, which, according to the Chinese Zodiac, is the Year of the Rabbit. The rabbit is seen as a very lucky sign so 2011 looks set to be a great year for us! It will be a time to reflect calmly and catch your breath, focusing on home, family and creating a safe, peaceful lifestyle. Liverpool is home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe with a thriving Chinatown, heralded by a magnificent Chinese arch, the largest in Europe. This year, the Liverpool Chinatown New Year Celebrations committee has pulled out all the stops to stage an exciting celebration, as the city waves goodbye to the Year of the Tiger and welcomes the Year of the Rabbit. There will be events throughout the month, from Tai Chi demonstrations to Chinese art workshops and funfairs, but the main activities will take place on Sunday,
February 6 in the Chinatown area including Nelson Street, Berry Street, Great George Street and Great George Square. This colourful event is not to be missed. Here are some of the highlights this year: ● Traditional Lion, Dragon and Unicorn Parade – 11.30am - 3pm, from St Luke’s Church on Berry Street ● Firecracker Display – 1pm, Great George Square ● Taste of China Sunday Street Market – 11am - 4pm, Great George Street ● John Collins Funfairs – 11am - 4pm, Nelson St and Great George Street ● Activities and entertainment at St Luke’s Church and The Black-E – 11am - 6pm The day will culminate in a spectacular finale at the China Palace on Berry Street which will be hosting the Liverpool Chinese New Year VIP dinner from 6.30pm to 9pm. Ingredients A handful of beansprouts 120g rice vermicelli 25g shredded roast pork 25g prawns 20g red and green peppers, cut into strips 1 egg Spring onions Red chilli strips
Seasoning 1 tbsp curry paste (Patak’s or the likes) 1/2 tsp white soy sauce 1/2 tsp sesame oil 1 pinch salt
Method * Soak the rice vermicelli in boiling water until it has softened. Drain and set aside. * Stir fry the egg with all the other ingredients for around three to four minutes. *Add the seasoning. *Sprinkle the sesame seeds, spring onions and chillies on top (optional). *Serve hot.
TO start the new year with happiness and prosperity, the Fu Hong Chinese restaurant is hosting a fabulous feast of entertainment to raise money for Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. The restaurant on Cherry Lane, Anfield, will be hosting a Chinese banquet, as well as entertainment including a lion dance, martial arts and charity raffle with great prizes to be won. LET’S be honest, unless you live or work nearby, Knowsley’s one of those places that you know of and might drive past every now and then, but probably haven’t ever visited. The area’s best-known for being home to the North West’s only safari park but scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find there’s a lot more to Knowsley. For instance, did you know that the first car to be built on Merseyside was a lime green Ford Anglia, built in Halewood in 1963? That Prescot Parish Church is Grade I listed and dates back to 1610? Or that Huyton was home to a prisoner of war camp during the Second World War? As well as a rich history there’s no shortage of famous folk from this part of the world, with LFC captain, Steven Gerrard, footballers Terry McDermott and Phil Thompson, who played for Liverpool in the 70s, Brookside creator, Phil Redmond and playwright, Willy Russell, all hailing from the borough. With such a strong football heritage, it’s fair to say that Knowsley’s a sporty place and as such, you’ll find great sports and leisure facilities in the area, with leisure centres in Halewood, Prescot, Huyton and Kirkby. There’s a number of golf courses where you can practice your swing, plus Knowsley even has its own footy team, the Prescot Cables, which was founded in 1884. Knowsley is investing heavily in its sports facilities and a multi-million pound regeneration project to create a new swimming pool, gym, leisure facilities and more in Stockbridge Village is currently underway. Work on the £16.1m Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park scheme, which will bring world-class sports and leisure facilities to the area, is also due to start this spring.
As well as fantastic sports facilities, Knowsley has a number of attractions that are well worth a trip up the motorway like the award-winning Acorn Farm in Kirkby and the National Wildflower Centre in Huyton. Another must-see attraction for thrill-seekers is the Land Rover Experience in Halewood, which includes an insight into how Land Rovers are built and an off-road driving experience. Of course the area’s best-known attraction is the ancestral home of the Stanley family – Knowsley Estate – which is home to the Grade II listed Knowsley Hall, a luxurious spa, Knowsley Safari Park and urban high ropes adventure course, Aerial Extreme. Opened in 1971 by the 18th Earl of Derby, the Safari Park remains everpopular and along the five-mile drive through the park you can see a whole menagerie of animals from African wild dogs and American bison to baboons, emus, elephants, lions, ostrich, meerkats, white rhinos and wildebeest to name just a few. For those who prefer their parks sans roaming lions and tigers, the borough
has 18 parks where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll or take the kids for a kick about, including Stadt Moers Park in Whiston, where a statue was recently unveiled by local artist John Merrill. When it comes to shopping, Knowsley has a number of places where you can enjoy a little retail therapy. In Prescot you’ll find a selection of stores in the shopping centre on Eccleston Street as well as high street names on Cables Retail Park. In busy Huyton ‘village’ you can pick up something a bit different from one of the independent shops or browse high street stores in Cavendish Walk, whilst in Kirkby you’ll find everything from local retailers to national chains in Newtown Gardens and Inshops shopping centre. There’s also many a bargain to be had in Huyton’s indoor market and Kirkby market, which has around 130 stalls to explore. Come night-time Knowsley has plenty to keep you entertained including local pubs, family friendly eateries, a selection of bars and independent restaurants like Lime Bar & Grill in Prescot and The Print House Restaurant and Bar, a modern English and Mediterranean eatery in the old Prescot Reporter printing office. So with fields of wild flowers, meandering meerkats, historic markets and more, why not take a closer look at what Knowsley has to offer?
