WE don’t like to mention the C word too early as we’ve barely got over Halloween and Bonfire Night. So we’ve tried not to go overboard on the Yuletide editorial, but the big kids that we are at Best of Liverpool, we can’t help but get a teeny weeny bit excited about the big event. Especially as we will be attending the launch of Liverpool ONE’s Ice Festival tonight. We can’t wait to see Dancing on Ice stars Samia and Sylvain taking to the ice rink at Chavasse Park. And tomorrow, Christmas officially starts in Liverpool with a spectacular Lantern Parade and the official light switch-on in the city. Then we’re looking forward to sitting on Santa’s knee and giving him our festive wish-list in his grotto at Liverpool ONE on November 24. If like me, you’re sick of the last-minute dash round the shops on Christmas Eve, then why not get a little organised this year? To help you, Sue has put her thinking cap on and found some great gift experiences on page 13. When it comes to noel nights out, all the best venues get booked up fast so don’t get left out in the cold. See Emma’s guide to some of our favourite festive venues on page 24. And it wouldn’t be Christmas without a panto. We have rounded up some of the best Christmas shows and pantos for you to enjoy on pages 16 and 17. So what to wear? Katie has scoured the high street in search of threads in the coolest shade of the moment – cobalt blue – on pages 8-9. And she has been researching the best treatments to prep your skin for the party season on page 12, while Sue gets herself in tip top condition with a visit to the Carnatic Spa in Mossley Hill on page 11. If you need to tone up before then, why not have a go at running the Santa Dash? Katie catches up with Big Brother celeb Craig Phillips to find out how his training is going on page 22. Although, if like me, at the first sign of winter,

THE COLOUR OF MONEY FOR CLAIRE HOUSE OVER 1,000 people ran, jogged, walked and danced through clouds of powdered paint recently, in the first Claire House Splash Dash. The event, which was dubbed ‘Merseyside’s messiest 5K,’ aimed to raise £50,000 to support children and young people who have complex medical conditions, and their families, who access the services of Claire House Children’s Hospice. Paint stations were situated at points across the route through Sefton Park, with 150 volunteers throwing the coloured powder, made from hypoallergenic, water-soluble corn flower, to create a rainbow of runners through the finish line. Kirsty Simpson, event manager for Claire House Children’s Hospice, says: “We saw these ‘colour runs’ as a trend in events that was coming over the pond from America and we knew we had to be involved. It represents everything Claire House is about – colour, vibrancy, fun and laughter. This is the first Claire House Splash Dash we’ve done and we’re delighted with the success. “I’d like to thank Liverpool ONE [official sponsor] and all our supporters for creating such an amazing event. We can’t wait to see you next year!”
BRINK OF ANOTHER YEAR A SMORGASBOARD of non-alcoholic cocktails, smoothies and a huge birthday cake were served at a celebration for the second birthday of Liverpol’s only alcohol and drug-free bar – The Brink. Partygoers also enjoyed a host of entertainment and live music. Jacqui Johnston-Lynch, from the Parr Street venue, says: “The past two years have been wonderful for The Brink and the second birthday bash was a great success. It was an honour to see so many people turn up, both familiar faces and new guests. It was such an enjoyable evening for everyone involved.” The Brink was set up in 2011 to provide a safe and supportive place for people keen to stay away from drugs and alcohol. It was also the UK’s first dry bar and restaurant.
LAUREN HITS THE DECKS THE Only Way Is Essex star, Lauren Pope was in town on Saturday, October 19 for a special event at Envi. The glamorous reality star took to the decks of the Fleet Street nightclub to battle it out against Kiss FM DJ Melvin O’Doom, as part of the WKD Sound Clash tour which has seen the two DJs compete in venues around the country, playing tracks chosen by the crowd on Spotify. Created by award-winning jewellery designer Buckley for The Royal British Legion, the Buckley Poppy Brooch raised over £1million for the charity. The jewellery designer has created another stunning poppy brooch for 2013, which comes in two sizes and features a poppy and leaf with gold tone detailing and sparkling poppy red and olivine hued stones. It is set to be equally as popular, having already been seen on celebrities such as Katie Melua. It is available in two sizes and costs just £15 for the smaller versions, and £25 for the larger brooch. STARS ENJOY A TASTE OF BRAZIL FORMER Hollyoaks costars Jennifer Metcalfe and Leah Hackett, X-Factor star Marcus Collins and Desperate Scousewives’ Elissa Corrigan were among the stars who joined some of the city’s most influential people to celebrate the launch of Fazenda Rodizio Bar and Grill recently. Located in Exchange Flags, the new restaurant is set to bring a taste of Brazil to the heart of the city’s commercial district. Held on October 10, the VIP launch event saw guests tuck into a selection of meats cooked gaucho-style over a traditional grill, while Brazilian Jazz band Carnival Do Brazil provided the soundtrack to the evening. As well as enjoying a mouthwatering feast, guests were wowed by Fazenda’s stunning interiors, which have been inspired by some of the finest restaurants in Brazil. And, if the food and music wasn’t enough to keep the glamorous guests entertained, then
watching the corkscrew in action certainly was. A limited edition mechanical sculpture, the restaurant’s statement corkscrew is designed to open a bottle of wine and pour a glass all under its own power. Argentinian owner Robert Melman, who also has a restaurant of the same name in Leeds, is confident that Fazenda will be a hit with Liverpool’s foodies. He says: “We’ve already been given a fantastic welcome to the city and it was great to see so many people come to celebrate our opening.”

NOVEMBER 13 LANDMARK ANNIVERSARY
BEST BAR NONE
ONE of Liverpool’s much-loved landmarks is celebrating its silk anniversary. This year marks the 12th anniversary of Sefton Park Palm House’s refurbishment, as part of a £5 million Heritage Lottery funded renovation project, which saw the Grade II listed Victorian greenhouse brought back to life. Since 2001, the Palm House has welcomed more than 1.3 million visitors, played host to over 800 trust events, free concerts and children’s events and held a staggering 600 weddings. “In the 90s, the Palm House site was a sad husk of a building,” says Moira Leonard, director of the Palm House. “Today, after the resilience of a 10 year campaign led by local residents, Liverpool once again has a thriving, beautiful glasshouse, regularly welcoming 100,000 visitors a year and delivering a diverse programme of events for all ages. The team and I love working here and look forward to developing our offer further in the coming months.”
FOODIES have a new place to enjoy a post-work drink or two now that awardwinning bar and restaurant, Delifonseca, has unveiled a new city centre café wine bar. Based in Delifonseca’s Stanley Street premises, the bar opened its doors on October 1. The venue, which has a capacity of 60, offers customers an extensive wine list by the glass plus a large variety of premium spirits and beers. There is also a menu of small plates and snacks, created by Delifonseca’s head chef Andy Hutchinson. Proprietor Candice Fonseca says: “As a team, we really have spent months ensuring that the bar is the best that it
can be, while offering everything that the customers want. Thanks to this new venue, we no longer have to refer our diners to other places when they feel like having a drink or two before or after they dine with us in the restaurant.”
BAKERS RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
A NOVEL IDEA
FOODIE fans descended on Yacht Club Liverpool recently for a bake-off between two Liverpool chefs, as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan. Fine dining chef and driector of Yacht Club Liverpool, Adam Franklin, and Laura Worthington, of Laura’s Little Bakery, went head-to-head in the Liverpool Bake Off contest, which raised £3,000 for Macmillan through the event and prize raffles. Adam and Laura battled it out in carrot cake and Victoria sponge categories, as well as a secret surprise cake category, which saw Laura bake a red velvet cake while Adam made a black forest delight. A panel of judges, including Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Gary Millar, former
THE House Beauty Spa Book Club recently treated its members to evenings with two fascinating authors. First on the menu was dishy Italian chef Gino D’Acampo who entertained over 100 ladies at Il Forno on Duke Street. Interviewed by Lyn Staunton of Variety, the children’s charity, Gino spoke about his primetime cookery series Gino’s Italian Escape and signed copies of his new cookbook of the same name which is packed with over 100 recipes, capturing the flavours, smells and tastes of Gino’s homeland. The next event was held at Gusto Albert Dock where The House Beauty Spa Book Club hosted an enjoyable afternoon with broadcaster and journalist, Kate Adie. Around 130 ladies enjoyed a three-course lunch before Kate shared stories which inspired her to write her book, ‘Fighting on the Home Front’, revealing the inspiring tales of women in WWI. Both events raised funds for Variety, the children’s charity. For more information on The House Beauty Spa Book Club, call 0151 724 4999 or email info@thehousebeautyspa.co.uk
Hollyoaks actor Matt Littler and Macmillan fundraising manager Lisa Wild among others, got to sample the baked delights. The contest was extremely close, with Laura just edging it to take the cake crown! She says: “Thank you to the judges and everyone who joined in the fun, as well as the many businesses who generously donated amazing prizes. We have been very touched by everyone’s support.” Adam adds: “We absolutely loved planning the Liverpool Bake Off, it’s been lots of fun and many hours in the kitchen – but was well worth it to raise £3,000 for Macmillan. It was a tough competition and Laura and I have loved the cake banter – the challenge is on to take the cake honours next year!”

GEORDIE GIRLS FRENZY ON MERSEY SHORE MORE than 4,000 people turned out to see the first-ever Geordie Shore pop-up boutique in Cavern Walks last month. Celebrity Big Brother 2013 winner Charlotte Crosby and her Geordie Shore co-stars Holly Hagan and Sophie Kasaei were welcomed to the Liverpool designer hub by hoards of screaming fans on Sunday, October 6. Adoring fans had queued from 6am outside the Cavern Walks entrance, by Dorans Lane, anticipating the arrival of the much-loved reality stars. And, by the time the girls arrived, the queue had stretched onto North John Street. When doors opened to the designer shopping centre shortly after 11am, fans snapped up onesies, jewellery, bright hair colours and dresses from the boutique and posed for pictures with the Geordie lasses. Stan Yarker, Cavern Walks centre manager, says: “We couldn’t believe the reaction to the girls and the queues – it was fantastic! “Their pop-up was a great addition to the centre and Cavern Walks is thrilled to have been chosen for their first shop in the UK. They are welcome back any time.”

Make a splash with this season’s must have hue – cobalt, says Katie McLoughlin... EARTHY, rich tones of rust, brown and deep reds usually dominate autumn/winter’s sartorial palette. This year, however, designers have embraced a rather different colour – cobalt. The autumn/winter catwalks were awash with this intense bold blue with Lanvin, Vivienne Westwood, DKNY and Celine just a few of the designers who made waves on the catwalks by featuring cobalt in their AW collections. To dip your toe into the trend, use cobalt to add a pop of colour with a statement piece, like an oversized mannish cut coat, cobalt hued shoes or accessories worn with crisp white, black, grey or silver to bring a little balance to the overall look. Alternatively, wear cobalt from head-to-toe in a range of textures to add interest to a one-colour ensemble. Add a slick of bright red lipstick for a splash of contrasting colour and you’re good to go. Or wear this bold blue with another of autumn/ winter’s key shades – bright orange – as a contrasting accent shade. Think a cobalt blue silk blouse paired with a bright orange pencil skirt, or a cobalt ensemble finished with an orange clutch. Bold, bright and beautiful, cobalt is a great way to add colour to your winter wardrobe. After all, just because the weather is grey, doesn’t mean your clothes have to be...

ZIG-ZAGS, stripes, diamonds and Nordic patterns are all making an appearance as bold jumpers are key to menswear this winter. The last couple of years chunky knitwear has taken over, but this season jumpers are a little thinner yet still making a statement with striking patterns.
Sweaters may have slimmed down but to keep you warm the gilet is taking centre stage and everyone is wearing them, looking cool and a little rugged. Ladies only... Sue Kelbrick wallows in the lap of luxury at Liverpool’s newest spa
FOLLOWING a stressful week at work, one too many social commitments and a sleepless night thanks to a teething baby, my trip to Carnatic Spa in leafy Mossley Hill couldn’t have come at a better time. As I arrived, I was given a warm welcome by spa owner Natalie, who immediately put me at ease and thrust a glass of Champagne in my hand – I must have looked like I needed it – and things were definitely starting to look up. Exclusively ladies only, the spa boasts a fabulous indoor heated swimming pool (there is the option for the roof to be pulled back to create an outdoor pool), as well as a hot tub, an infra-red weight loss sauna, a Rasul mud treatment room and two brand new treatment rooms where guests can enjoy a range of treatments from Crystal Clear facials to hot stone massages. There is also a Sienna spray tan booth, and treatments like Shellac nails and Nouveau semi-permanent eyelashes available. Natalie explained that guests can choose whatever treatments they want and that packages can be tailored according to their individual needs – whether they are looking for an indulgent day of pampering or want to get ready for a big night out. Natalie recommended that I have a go at the infra-red sauna first, which is believed to be the only one of its kind

in Liverpool. The sauna combines all the benefits of a normal sauna with the addition of infra-red panels which give pain relief, improved circulation and immunity. And best of all, 30 minutes in an infra-red sauna can be the equivalent of burning up to 800 calories, so can actually be used as part of a weight loss programme. I was already calculating how much chocolate I could offset with a visit to the sauna... After the sauna, I had a relaxing swim in the pool, and a wallow in the hot tub, which was simply heavenly. I was brought a jug of iced cold water and a selection of magazines and told to chill out and relax, which I duly did. Feeling suitably chilled out, I was shown into the Rasul mud treatment room, where I was given three different types of mud to smear on my skin. One was an exfoliating mud ideal for dry skin area like elbows and knees, another was for the rest of the body and

then finally a more gentle one, for the face. I felt a bit daft covered in mud but I have to say that when I showered it off, my skin really did feel soft and cleansed. Next on my pampering programme, I was able to choose from a hot stone back massage, or one of Carnatic Spa’s bespoke facials. I decided to opt for a (much-needed) facial and went for the Carnatic luminous rice facial designed to leave the skin radiant and glowing. Bring it on... My beauty therapist, Christy, first of all massaged cleanser into the skin on my face, shoulders and neck, and then applied a rich moisturiser, followed by a thick, creamy mask which felt beautiful on my skin. Rice has purifying properties and helps to stimulate collagen production thereby increasing the skin’s elasticity, helping to even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of age spots. As the mask absorbed into my skin,

Christy treated me to a gorgeous and truly relaxing shoulder and neck massage which really helped to finally expunge all the tension I had accumulated over the previous few weeks. Christy then removed the mask with sponges and applied another generous layer of moisturiser. My skin was left feeling really soft and smooth. To round off my visit in style, I was treated to a set of Shellac nails which was a lovely finishing touch to a quite outstanding spa experience. If only I could go every week...

1. For the best results, start by giving your hair some texture with a mousse or volume-boosting product. If your hair is really fine, don’t use too much product. If it’s thick or naturally curly, use a little more. Put your product on before you dry, either by air or with a diffuser.
2
2. Start by pulling your hair into a ponytail, on the last loop, instead of pulling the locks all the way through, leave the ends sticking out toward your face. You will use this to create a loop of hair over the elastic.
3. Grab the ends that are sticking out of the elastic, separate them, and pull them toward the back, around the base of the ponytail. This will create a bun shape around the top loop of hair.
4 A good skin care routine before, during and after party season will help to keep your skin looking its best through Christmas and beyond. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser, RRP £17, has a gentle yet effective gel formula which dissolves excess oil, dirt and debris. Follow with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Toner, RRP £16.50, and finish with Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, RRP £24, which provides 24hour hydration to leave skin supple, particularly in harsh weather conditions.
4. Pin the loop on top so that it sticks to the head and holds its shape. You may need to play with it a little to get the look you want. Use hairspray to hold it all in place.
5 5. Tuck the ends in or let them stick out – whatever looks good to you. Once you get the basic move down, you just pin and shape until you like what you see. Finish with a quick spritz of shine spray for a glossy look and you’re hair is party perfect. Super easy!

SNAP HAPPY IT may be the ideal Christmas gift for a loved one but buying a new camera can be a daunting process with so many makes, models and types of camera to choose from. David Parkinson, MD at Wilkinson Cameras, the North West’s leading independent photo retailers, gives his top tips on finding the perfect camera: l This may seem obvious, but think about the type of pictures the camera will be used for. Do you want a tiny camera which can be popped in a pocket for family days out, something super fast for shoot action shots, or maybe close ups? Or do you want a ‘point and shoot’ camera, which will automatically choose settings for you, or a camera where you can take control manually (or both!)? Think about how and when you will use the camera and decide your budget. l Cameras come in all shapes and sizes – and the lens is one of the most important features. Think about whether a super-zoom would work well for you – this gives you total freedom to take a wide angle shot, or zoom in for a close up. Great for travel and holidays – as with just one lens you can take a huge range of pictures. Or would you prefer a camera which takes different lenses – so you can choose a fixed focal length, zoom or specialist lens for close ups?
fabulous value with three delicious courses and a glass of Taittinger Rose for £70 for two. Or why not try the famous traditional Grosvenor Afternoon Tea for £26? Compact system cameras – a newer style of camera which are very popular these ‘CSC’ cameras combine the best of both worlds. Still very light and compact in size, the cameras have interchangeable lenses – so you can add fixed focal length or zoom lenses as you wish. An ideal combination for those who are out and about and still want a lightweight camera, but with top notch quality and a broad range of features. l Also think about what the person will want to do with their pictures – will they want to print them for instance? If you want to blow pictures up to put them on the wall on in a frame or canvas then ensure you have a camera with sufficient megapixels to deliver the picture quality you need. Most cameras these days are very high quality and can print all sorts of photo gifts and accessories straight from the digital files. l And finally, think about any really key features you ‘must have’. Do you want the camera to shoot photos and video, shoot high speed action shots, night time shots, or get in close with a macro setting – great for flowers and insects? Most cameras have a combination of these, so ensure whichever camera you go for ticks all the boxes! Wilkinson Cameras has 10 stores within the North West, with a team of experts on hand to help you every step of the way. BEST OF LIVERPOOL
TIME travel with me, if you will, back 50 years to parlours and living rooms across the nation as an unsuspecting public settled down in front of their TV sets to watch a new programme on BBC One. At 5.15pm on Saturday, November 23, 1963, Doctor Who first entered our world and since then, successive generations have been equally enthralled and terrified by the life-or-death situations and abominable creatures the Doctor tackled each week. So much of the Doctor’s universe has permeated our own, so that words like “exterminate!” and names like Dalek, Cybermen and TARDIS are recognised even by those who’ve never even watched an episode. Eleven Doctors have so far commanded the TARDIS, across an initial run of 26 years, a one-off special in 1996, followed by a full resurrection of the series in 2005, from which the Doctor’s fame and popularity has just kept growing. Now, in its 50th anniversary year, the series is watched by an estimated 80m viewers in 206 countries, and has been honoured by Guinness World Records as the longest-running and mostsuccessful science fiction series in the world! Of course, Liverpool has played its own part in the Doctor Who story, supplying no fewer than two Doctors and a couple of his companions too. Much-loved Liverpudlian actor Tom Baker played the Doctor in his Fourth incarnation, from 1974 to 1981. With many great episodes and performances under his belt, Baker is many people’s favourite version of the Time Lord. Paul McGann, famous for playing the ‘I’ in Withnail and I, is another Liverpool thesp who tackled the role of the Doctor during a one-off, feature-length, special in 1996. In terms of the Doctor’s human companions, Maureen O’Brien

was the first Scouser to fly in the TARDIS and played Vicki Pallister, a companion of the First Doctor. The late Elisabeth Sladen was one of the most popular of all the Doctor’s assistants and played Sarah Jane Smith from 1973 to 1976, alongside both Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. She even appeared in the spin-off series K9 and Company, then reprised her role as Sarah Jane when Doctor Who returned in the 2000s, including her own spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures. The 50th anniversary episode itself airs November 23 and is set to include all 11 Doctors, with the return of former Time Lord David Tennant, companion Billie Piper, and also actor John Hurt.

Fairytale ending Amanda Harrington is getting her dazzling white teeth into a new role in panto but will she find her happy ever after? Michelle Rushton waves her magic wand and finds out more...
Photo: LadyDphotography Stylist: Rebecca Spendlove
LHK Productions has pulled out all the stops to make this year’s panto the must-see Christmas show. A timeless tale and one of the nation’s favourite pantomimes, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs tells the story of a beautiful princess and her jealous step mother, obsessed with getting rid of Snow White and becoming the fairest of them all. LHK Productions promises to deliver the mix of fun and traditional pantomime with a fresh and current twist. Pantogoers can expect poisoned apples, magical mirrors and plenty of song, dance and audience participation. Oh yes they can! But luckily they will be spared from Amanda’s dulcet tones. When asked if she will be trilling a merry tune, she laughs: “No way – I have a deep husky voice – it doesn’t go down well!” Amanda is happy to be playing a nice character. “It’s a nice role. She’s so friendly and lovely and I’m glad to be playing a good role rather than a baddie after Scousewives!” And as can only be expected from the glamorous model, she will be injecting plenty of glitz and glitter into her role and will be wearing some dazzling costumes. She explains: “We ran a competition for fashion students at Liverpool John Moores University to design my fairy costume. We have narrowed it down to 20 and are now working with costume designer Mary at Ku by Spendlove on which will work best and looking at different fabrics.” Amanda’s 12-year-old daughter is looking forward to seeing her mother tread the boards. Says the 32-year-old mum: “She’ll be coming with all her mates – they can’t wait!”

SHE’S no stranger to a mascara wand, being a champion of the full on lashes and Scouse brow look, but now Amanda Harrington is getting to grips with a wand of a more magical variety! The Desperate Scousewives star will be playing the role of Fairy Good Heart in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Epstein Theatre this Christmas. It will be a complete challenge for the Liverpool model and former ECHO columnist who has never set foot on a stage before. “I’m very comfortable in front of a TV camera,” admits Amanda who shot to fame on E4’s dramality show Scousewives, and has appeared in Girls of the Playboy Mansion. “But I have never done any acting before so it’s my first time. “We start rehearsals this month then the show starts in December and we’ll be doing two shows a day for six weeks!” Phew! Sounds like a lot to take on, but Amanda is ready for it. She confides: “I’m so looking forward to it – it’s an exciting new challenge and I just hope I do a good job.” The novice thespian will be in safe hands, working with a fun cast who are no strangers to the world of panto. The star-studded panto features Paul Danan, the original Hollyoaks bad boy, known for his awardwinning tenure on Celebrity Love Island, who will be living up to his heartthrob reputation as the everdashing Prince. Looking to scheme her way to the title of ‘fairest of them all’ is comedian, TV star, jungle survivor and Liverpool favourite Crissy Rock as the Wicked Queen. And to add to the enchantment of the show, families can enjoy a magical appearance by Celebrity Superspa judge and style icon, Herbert of Liverpool, as the Magic Mirror.
With 49 performances through the festive season, Amanda is looking forward to chilling out in the new year. So what will be her happy every after? “A good holiday!” giggles Amanda who has plenty of good stuff in the pipeline for 2014. She will be busy with Scouse Boutique which she runs with her fellow Scousewives and her fashion and beauty blog www.amandaharringtonblog. com. She’s in talks to bring out a new tanning range plus there’s bound to be more modelling work in store. Amanda has recently completed a fashion shoot at Circo with LadyD Photography with stunning results. Our cover shot shows Amanda as you have never seen her before. But at first she wasn’t convinced... Amanda says: “Normally I am full on 100% Scouse but my hair and makeup stylist, Rebecca Spendlove, persuaded me to try a 1950s look. I felt really out of my comfort zone until I saw the photos – now I am more confident in trying new things!” So if you want to see how Amanda fares as a fairy don’t miss Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the Epstein Theatre, Liverpool, from December 12 – January 5, 2014. LEAP OF FAITH Rory Taylor is a Superstar in the making, says Katie McLoughlin...
THE last year has been a bit of a whirlwind for Wirral-born singer, Rory Taylor. The 25-year-old was runner-up to Ben Forster on ITV’s Superstar competition in 2012 and since then he has toured both Australia, and the UK for the revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar. The Australian tour saw the Heswall singer play Jesus in Adelaide, when he stepped in for lead Ben, who had fallen ill. He received a standing ovation for his performance as the son of God. And after wowing audiences in Australia, he was back on home-turf last month for the UK tour of the show, when he played Simon, the disciple. As well as appearing in two tours of Jesus Christ Superstar, the burgeoning musical theatre star had a leading role in the smash-hit musical Rent, which received rave reviews when it toured the UK in April. “At the moment I’ve not really had time to sit down and think about it. If I did, I would probably be a little bit baffled by how much I’ve done – but I just get on with it really and take it in my stride,” says Rory, who is set to star in Rent again this month, as the 20th anniversary tour has been extended to meet demand. The tour kicks off in Blackpool’s Opera House on November 11 and will travel to London, Oxford, Nottingham, Edinburgh and Dublin to name just a few, before

coming to Liverpool on November 30. “I’m looking forward to being back on home ground, being able to spend some time with my family and play to a home crowd again. I feel a lot more relaxed and I always have a lot of positive energy for a home show,” he enthuses. Loosely based on Puccini’s La Boheme, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Set in the East Village of New York, the award-winning musical follows a year in the life of a group of friends who are struggling to make it in the big city under the shadow of HIV and AIDS. Rory and Atomic Kitten’s Natasha Hamilton lead a West End cast and live band for the production, which also stars fellow Scouser Leon Lopez as Collins. The Heswall singer is looking forward to reprising the role of Roger for the tour, and hopes that his experience on Superstar will give him a fresh take on the part, saying: “The nice thing about playing the same character again after having just done a show like Jesus Christ Superstar is that it has helped me to find a new dimension to the character again. And, because I am a singer primarily, doing a world tour of Jesus Christ Superstar has helped me to learn a lot about acting.” Rory, who also plays with his brothers in band 54321, is looking forward to working with Big Reunion star Natasha, saying: “I think I worked with Natasha a long time ago when Atomic Kitten were
just starting out and I was playing the same event with the band, so I think I met her back then. I met her properly a few weeks ago and from what I’ve heard, she’s absolutely smashing the part so I’m very excited to perform with her.” With 15 shows in just a few short weeks, Rory certainly has a busy schedule ahead but his enthusiasm hasn’t waned – despite undertaking four major tours almost back-to-back.
“I think you have to put it into perspective really because I get to perform in some world class shows in some amazing venues and I make a living for it! I absolutely love it,” enthuses Rory. Although he does admit that the world of musical theatre can take a bit of getting used to. “There’s a lot to take in, it’s a strange business. It has its major plus points and it has major negatives, but if you do find your right place in the business, it’s amazing. There’s a still a lot of prejudice against people who got into the business like I did, but I don’t think you should judge people on that, there’s a lot of different ways into it.” Rory certainly seems to have found his place in the business and following his upcoming stint in Rent, he’s hoping there are more tours in the pipeline. “I have a few things lined up for next year – I’m 99% certain that Jesus Christ Superstar is going to be back on tour, where to I’m not sure, but there is a contract in negotiation at the moment and also another tour of Rent in January when I’ll be back with Kerry [Ellis],” he reveals. Rent – 20th Anniversary Concert is at The Auditorium at ECHO Arena Liverpool on Saturday, November 30. To book tickets log on to the website www.echoarena.com or call the box office on 0844 8000 400.

Over the last few years, the band has launched an explosive assault on festivals and clubs across the UK and can count Emmy-nominated actress Robin Weigert and Hollywood-actor Michael Shiflett among their fans. The band also attracted the attention of legendary Beatles' promoter, Sam Leach. In fact, Sam was reportedly so impressed with the band that he flew back from filming his biography in New York to introduce the five-piece at their album launch in Zanzibar. They were also selected to play at Noel Gallagher and the High Flying Birds' official after show party, and
provide the main support for Steve Cradock (Paul Weller and Ocean Colour Scene) at the O2 Academy, Liverpool. No mean feat. You can catch Joe Symes and The Loving Kind at District in the Baltic Triangle on December 6, and supporting The Blockheads at Eric's on Friday, December 13. Their self-titled album is available to download online at iTunes and Spotify. For more information visit www.joesymes.co.uk
HAVING bagged numerous industry awards and recently released a critically acclaimed debut album, it's fair to say that Natalie McCool is going places. And fast. A talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, the Liverpool-born 25-year-old is about to kick off her UK tour at The Kazimier tonight. "I'm really looking forward to going on tour, especially playing the Liverpool show," McCool says excitedly. "We've got a brilliant line-up – I honestly can't wait. What could be better than having your family, friends, peers and fans all at one show? It's such a great feeling. Dave McTague [from Mellowtone], and I picked the support acts too so it's good to be involved in the full process." She adds: “The [set] on tour will be a balanced mix of full band performances and solo performances, which is great as I really enjoy both and it's good to show fans both sides of me and the songs." Described as "the love child of Johnny Marr and Elizabeth Fraser", McCool's music is a mix of haunting melodies, intricate guitar riffs and powerful vocals. Unsurprising, given that she credits the likes of Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey and the Cocteau Twins as her main musical influences while growing up in Widnes. "I'd describe my music as alternative with a pop edge," she adds. "I get the label 'solo female artist/songwriter', but I play finger picked electric guitar live with chorus/delay/reverb pedals, so that adds a lot to the sound." McCool, who studied music at LIPA, has already racked up an illustrious list of achievements despite her tender age. At 19, her first break came in the form of winning national songwriting competition Make It Or Break it – judged by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Live Aid promoter Harvey Goldsmith CBE and Grammy Award winning music producer, Steve Levine.
Too McCool for school With her UK tour kicking off in Liverpool tonight, Sarah Hooley catches up with singer, guitarist and songwriter Natalie McCool...
Soon after, she was snapped up by Levine's Hubris Records label and went on to graduate from LIPA with a first class honours degree before releasing four EPs and three singles. These releases then attracted the attention of a long list of national and local radio shows, among which include BBC 6 Music's Chris Hawkins, Tom Ravenscroft, Shaun Keaveny, and Steve Lamacq, as well as Radio 2's Dermot O'Leary, Janice Long, Steve Wright and Claudia Winkleman. So it was no surprise that on launching her self-titled debut album – compered by Hawkins – at District (formerly the Picket) in April, it was a huge success. McCool says: "The launch was probably the best show we've played – it was absolutely fantastic and a great night. There was such a good feeling in the room, and we got some amazing feedback on the night." Four months later and the musician was then crowned Female Artist of the Year at the Liverpool Music Awards 2013. A moment which she describes as "stellar”. “I couldn't believe it,” McCool says of the moment they called her name. “I was so nervous when they were announcing my category, [and] then I won and I had to go on stage and accept the award. It's a great title to win, and I had a great night!” So what's next for the rising star? "There'll be a one-off release to coincide with my tour," she continues. "As I've recorded my own version of Billy Fury's 1960 hit 'Wondrous Place' which you can check out on the GetIntoThis blog. I'm also currently writing my next EP/album – everything's going really well!" Natalie McCool will be kicking off her UK tour at The Kazimier tonight (Thursday, November 7) in collaboration with Mellowtone. There'll be support from Silent Cities, Cousin Jac and Ravens. Tickets cost £7 on the door. Visit www.thekazimier.co.uk or www.nataliemccool.co.uk

GIT Awards
Get into this!
Huw Roberts of The Wild Eyes attacks the mic at the 2013 show
The GIT Award 2014 launches this month – Paul Baker looks at what to expect from the event and how all you talented musicians out there can enter the competition... Peter Guy announcing The GIT Award winners
IT’S that time of year again... time to launch The GIT Award 2014. The Best of Liverpool team has long supported Liverpool’s answer to the Mercury Music Prize. And why not? It’s about rewarding the very best talent in Liverpool and Merseyside, after all. Heck, we were there back in April, partying with the rest of them at the 2013 Award night, until being cleared out of Leaf with a broom as the sun came up! Well, Leaf will also be the location for the launch of the 2014 Award, on Saturday, November 16. The GIT Award itself will be presented next year – April 11, 2014 – in a sensational event at perhaps the coolest venue in town, The Kazimier in Wolstenholme Square. This will be the GIT Award’s third successive year, but the process to find the 12 GIT Award shortlisted nominees is only just beginning. Unlike many awards launches, The GIT Award launch at Leaf is open to the public and free to attend! But, like most award launches, it will be stuffed with the coolest music around. On the night, you can witness an exclusive collaboration between Liverpool gothic-pop band Bird and singersongwriter Natalie McCool. Both artists have received huge national acclaim and will be taking time out from their debut UK tours to collaborate for a GIT Award exclusive. The event will also give you the chance to check out superb new Wirral band VEYU. They’ve played just two gigs so far and have already received national attention and airplay on BBC 6Music. Having caught them live over the summer, I can heartily recommend taking this chance to see one of the most exciting local bands in years. Liverpool electronic artists Kalax and Nights will also play, and there will be a

DJ set from Club EVOL founder and GIT Award judge Steve ‘Revo’ Miller. The GIT Award is the first regional award of its kind, championing emerging talent across Merseyside’s vibrant arts and music community since 2011. Founded and organised by the ECHO’s very own Peter Guy, GIT stands for Getintothis, the title of Peter’s blog which has been celebrating the Liverpool music scene since its launch six years ago. Twelve artists will be shortlisted for the prize based on the quality of the recordings they submit for consideration by the judging panel. The eventual winners will receive a cash prize of £1,000, and the prestigious GIT Award trophy. The winners of the inaugural GIT Award, Loved Ones, this year released their debut album, played the Anglican Cathedral as part of Liverpool Sound City and have toured extensively, including a recent Paris gig. Then, as part of the 2013 GIT Award prize, winners Baltic Fleet were personally invited by Yoko Ono to support her at Meltdown Festival – an event she curated as part of her 80th birthday celebrations! Definitely worthwhile entering then. Plus you’ll get your music heard by some rather influential industry figures. Among the judging panel during the GIT
Award’s first two years were journalists from NME magazine, The Guardian, Q Magazine, Vice Magazine, The Quietus, 6Music DJ (and son of John Peel) Tom Ravenscroft, plus the cornerstones of Liverpool’s music scene. The final word, then, goes to GIT mainman Peter Guy, who tells us: “When the GIT Award was established two years ago we had no idea how it would snowball, placing new Liverpool music at the forefront of the national consciousness, and have the impact it has had. “From the first year – when GIT Award nominee Esco Williams had a MOBO Award created in his honour – to coverage of all 12 nominees across the BBC, MTV and the national print press, plus last year’s blanket national radio and online coverage, the GIT Award has provided a multi-media platform for Merseyside music to thrive.” So if you fancy having your music mentioned in the same breath as past nominees like Stealing Sheep, Dan Croll, Clinic and Outfit, best get your top tracks

Santa is coming to town Katie McLoughlin catches up with Craig Phillips as he prepares to take part in this year’s Santa Dash... CRAIG Phillips has always been known as a very nice man. He won the hearts of the nation in 2000 when he gave away his £70,000 Big Brother winnings to a childhood friend and Downs Syndrome sufferer, then raised a further £250,000 in the days after leaving the Big Brother house to pay for her life-saving heart and lung transplant. More recently, the Seaforth-born DIY expert took part in a 15,000ft charity skydive for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, completed the Aintree Memory Walk for the Alzheimer’s Society and ran the final leg of a 96-mile journey in memory of those who died at Hillsborough, which raised money for Alder Hey and Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital. Now Craig is busy preparing to take part in another charitable event – Liverpool’s annual Santa Dash. Along with Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, the Big Brother star is an official ambassador for the event. So, as the December 1 race draws near, how does he feel about traversing the 5K course dressed as jolly old St Nick? “I’m really looking forward to it, it’s a great atmosphere,” says Craig, who has taken part in the festive fun run twice before.
Taking place on December 1, the Santa Dash will see Craig and thousands of other fun runners complete a 5K route through the city centre which starts at Canada Boulevard, in front of the Liver Building, and finishes outside the Town Hall on Dale Street. “What makes the race interesting is passing by the iconic buildings in the city beginning, of course, in front of the world famous Liver Building on the Pier Head,” says Craig, who admits that, as a marathon runner, he hasn’t had to do any special training for the event. “I’ve got to be honest, I haven’t [done any training] with it only being 5K as I run marathons so I do that about twice a week.” Everyone who takes part dons a Santa suit for the occasion, which always makes quite a spectacle as thousands of Santas weave their way through the city centre. “I remember in a previous year looking back as we ran up the fly-over towards the Empire Theatre and looking back at a huge sea of red created by the many people taking part. It’s a great sight,” adds Craig, who had just finished filming a Christmas special for 60 Minute Makeover when Best of Liverpool caught up with him. As well as the classic red Santa suits,
Get set... INSPIRED by the Santa Dash to take up running? Here are some must-have kit ideas...
there will also be 500 blue Santa suits available in this year’s Liverpool Santa Dash. The all important question is whether Craig will be wearing a red or blue suit? “I’m a Liverpool supporter so it’s got to be a red suit, it’s traditional,” says Craig. “Although there are more and more blues taking part each year.” Now in its 10th year, the Liverpool Santa Dash is believed to be the biggest festive fun run in the UK. Some 8,500 people took part in 2012 and the Liverpool event has been beaten in terms of numbers only by the Great Santa Run in Las Vegas, which managed an impressive total of 9,200 runners last year. There’s a traditional rivalry between Liverpool’s Santa Dash and the Las Vegas Great Santa Run as to who stages the bigger event. And this year, Liverpool’s organisers, BTR, are hoping to have 10,000 entrants and beat Las Vegas to the World Santa Challenge title. “Each year I find that more and more people are aware of it [the Santa Dash] so hopefully we will beat Las Vegas this year and get the World Record back for Liverpool,” says the Big Brother winner, who also took part in the Liverpool Marathon in 2011.

Since it was launched in 2004, some 50,000 people have taken part in Liverpool’s Santa Dash and the annual fun run has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity. This year, the event will be supporting Claire House children’s hospice as the official event charity, along with Walking with Giants Foundation. “I support lots of different charities throughout the year anyway but it’s always nice to support children’s charities at Christmas time,” says Craig, who feels it’s important to support good causes in his home city. “It’s nice to support small and local charities which sometimes don’t get the same attention as the bigger ones and doing things in your home city always feels that bit better.”

It’s been a quick success story for the local microbrewery. They attended their very first beer festival in February 2010 and put on a festival of their own in Waterloo’s Old Christ Church later that same year! The festival has continued to grow in status since then, the recently-held event in Waterloo last month being the sixth the brewery has put on, including a recent prestigious and highly successful festival in St George’s Hall.
There will be another in prestigious St George’s Hall in 2014, tickets going on sale in the new year. I met with Mark Hensby, the brewery’s managing director who feels that Liverpool Organic Brewery is helping fill the void left by Cains. Having worked for many years in financial services Mark, in semiretirement, wanted to run his own pub. He first made a success of running Stamps Too in Waterloo, and then, having learnt about the pub trade, decided to look seriously into starting up a microbrewery. With help and investment from business partners John Burns, Steve Clark, Karl Critchley and Ken Robinson, Liverpool Organic Brewery was formed. Mark puts the success down to a combination of good fortune and finding the right staff to work for the business. “We’ve been very lucky with people,” he says. “Susan O’Neill, the brewery manager, has a first and a masters in micro biology. Our driver is a real ale aficionado and ex-police Class 1 driver. Other staff include a law student and a bar tender.”
Most of the people I speak to in the business were employed after chatting with Mark, and expressing an interest in the brewery. It seems Mark is interested in recruiting people who show both enthusiasm and potential. It’s proving to be a winning blend. Susan O’Neill showed me around the small brewing works, and explained the fascinating process by which the hops and malt are brewed to make the company’s award-winning ale. They source organic malt and whole hop flowers to ensure only the finest ingredients are used, brewing up to about 10 barrels a week, though there’s the potential to do more. As we walk around I get to taste the raw hops and smell the fumes rising from the thick porridgey wort, to which the hops will be added during the 90 minute boiling process. Aroma hops are mixed in at the end, before the yeast for the fermenting process which lasts three to four days. This is a very important process, as Susan says: “Brewers don’t make beer, yeast does!” Of course, the proof is in the tasting, and I got to sample a few myself – the hoppy RoyAle George getting my personal seal of approval. If you fancy a tour of the brewery yourself, they will start again in spring 2014. In the meantime, don’t miss the next event organised by Liverpool Organic Brewery, a Christmas Beer Festival being held in the Black-E in Liverpool, from Thursday to Sunday, December 5-8.
Down the Rabbit Hole (10%) – Mad Hatter Brewery This beautiful ruby-coloured beer captivates before dragging you head first into its foresty flavours and aromas. Brewed by Liverpool’s newest and most eccentric brewery; this serious ale is not for the faint hearted! Imperial Russian Stout (7.9% abv) – Liverpool Organic Brewery A rich, complex stout with hints of liquorice and slight notes of burnt treacle. A true winter warmer!
Shipwreck IPA (6.5% abv) – Liverpool Organic Brewery Citrus and pine envelope the senses as this decadent IPA is quaffed. Perfect with toasted marshmallows on a cold autumn evening.
Dirty Stop Out (5%) – Tiny Rebel Describing its colour as “slag heap”, the creators of this oaksmoked stout definitely have a sense of humour! Crowned ‘champion beer of Wales 2013’, this smoky ale is a winter winner.
Old Shrimper (5.5%) Southport Brewery A complex winter ale, which is just as quaffable when supped in autumn.

Roll up for a feast of fun Michelle Rushton and her family run away to the circus... DINING out with kids is always a juggling act for my partner Mike and I – taking it in turns to wolf down your food while the other tries to stop the little monkeys from making a mess and charging around the restaurant. So we were intrigued to hear about the newly relaunched restaurant at Circo Bar, Restaurant and Freakshow at the Albert Dock. The circus-themed restaurant has been named 1770 after the year of the first circus performance as we know it in Britain and is a tribute to Philip Astley, the father of the modern circus. Promising great food with live performances and Freakshows on Friday and Saturday evenings, could 1770 be the answer to stress-free eating out with the kids? We rolled up to Circo on a Saturday night and were immediately enchanted by the quirky décor with lots of bizarre circus memorabilia from a horse with a lampshade sticking out of its head to a life size polar bear, as well as colourful circus artwork brightening up the bare brick walls – a real feast for the eyes. The staff were really warm and friendly, showing us to our table and making a fuss of Daniel and Isla, bringing them crayons and colouring pens which kept them amused while we checked out the a la carte menu.

There was a varied choice of dishes including pasta, risottos, grills and steaks. We chose linguini carbonara with sautéed bacon and mushrooms in Italian hard cheese cream sauce for the children – a safe bet as they always like pasta. They enjoyed it but what we hadn’t realised was that there was a special kids’ menu on the back of the colouring sheet – doh! Mike chose salmon and prawn fishcakes with red onion and cucumber slaw and dill mayonnaise for his starter which was nice but not as yummy as my beer battered king prawns with crisp, baby gem lettuce and sweet chilli sauce. The batter just melted in your mouth, revealing succulent meaty prawns, sweetened by the chilli sauce which had a fiery afterkick causing my tastebuds to perform acrobatics. A bit too spicy for the children, I had the perfect excuse not to share it with them! While we devoured our starters, a woman in a scarlet bikini suddenly appeared out of nowhere on top of the wine cooler causing the children to gasp! She gracefully climbed onto a hoop suspended from the ceiling and performed a mesmerising trapeze act. The children were gobsmacked and it kept them quiet while we enjoyed our food – result! While waiting for our mains, a pair of clowns worked their way through the restaurant, homing
in on Daniel and Isla, the youngest diners, causing them to squeal with laughter at their tricks and tomfoolery – hiding under our table and pretending to cry when Daniel refused a high five. They continued to play peekaboo with the children, allowing Mike and I to eat our mains in peace. My pan seared duck breast came on a bed of sweet soy and sesame noodles with wilted pak choi and a honey glaze. The duck was tender and the noodles tasty. Mike’s 8oz rib eye steak was cooked to perfection and a massive hit with the kids who couldn’t get enough of it. “More steak” they pleaded so poor Mike only got a mouthful of it. Luckily it came with grilled mushrooms and tomato, peppercorn sauce and heavenly handmade chunky chips, else he would have gone hungry! I fancied sampling the cocktail menu which features an array of Big Top-themed beverages from – Candy Floss Martinis to the Strongman Shake – but being drunk in charge of toddlers is never a good idea so I shied away from the hard stuff in favour of a refreshingly fruity Zinfandel. We sat back and relaxed, astounded by the ‘aerial silks act’ – a handsome couple who performed a jawdroppingly amazing routine which would not have looked out of place in Cirque du Soleil, draping themselves in the white silks dangling from the ceiling. The finale, was the delectable puddings. My white chocolate crème brulee was to die for – the sweet crunchy topping giving way to a silky smooth chocolatey custard accompanied by tangy raspberries. Meanwhile, Mike opted for a marvellous Eton Mess which was just as it should be, a moreish mixture of strawberries, meringue and cream and the kids enjoyed their favourite – good old fashioned ice cream. The clowns reappeared and invited the children to have a go at balancing on a ball, followed by fire eating and cartwheels. Altogether it was a magical evening and Mike and I agreed it was the best meal out we’d ever had with the children as they loved the fun of the circus and because they were entertained, they didn’t feel the need to play up. To top it all off, a fellow diner even complemented them on their good behaviour adding “they’re a credit to you” – hallelujah! It has restored our faith in dining out and we are looking forward to going back for an encore.

Comfort food brings the family together Sue Kelbrick takes her family for a memorable meal at a hidden gem OUR family day out didn’t get off to the best of starts with a disastrous car journey, two screaming children and a disappointing trip to a local event (which shall remain nameless). All in all it didn’t bode well for our Sunday lunch at the Park Hotel in Aintree. And the rather scruffy exterior only served to make our already dampened spirits fall even further. Thankfully things started looking up as soon as we walked through the doors. We were greeted by restaurant manager, Lydia who soon put us at ease and a quick glance around at the shiny new interior, led us to heave a collective sigh of relief, and for the first time that day, we all relaxed and began to enjoy ourselves. We were shown to a table in the light and airy restaurant which was nicely busy and had a pleasant buzz about it.
We perused the menu while waiting for our drinks, a glass of wine for me and a pint of beer for my other half (greatly appreciated after the stresses of the day so far), and juice for the children. We all opted for a traditional Sunday roast with all the trimmings, a choice we didn’t regret. There was also a great children’s menu offering a wide selection of dishes to keep even the most fussy little appetites happy. While we were waiting for our food to arrive, we were well looked after by the staff, who were helpful and friendly without being intrusive. Some warm bread and real butter was brought to the table which was a nice touch, and before long our roast dinners all arrived. The food was beautifully presented and we all tucked in hungrily. The food definitely made up for the bad luck we’d
had that day – the meat was tender and delicious, the vegetables were all cooked to a tee and the gravy, thick and tasty, just how I like it. We were introduced to the chef after our meal who seemed genuinely delighted that we’d enjoyed our food and he regaled us with tales of his experience as a chef on the Orient Express. He also explained how he likes to source the meat locally and uses only the best, fresh seasonal vegetables, which is always nice to hear. The children had already spotted the dessert menu so I knew we wouldn’t get away without a pudding. We ordered a banana split which was big enough for us all to dip into and enjoy. After our meal we were treated to a guided tour of the hotel which has recently undergone a major refurbishment and now has 61 upgraded
rooms, a brand new state of the art conference and meeting centre and banqueting facilities for weddings suitable for up to 350 guests. As well as the a la carte restaurant, where we ate our lunch, there is also the Grand National bar. So thankfully our day ended better than it started, which was largely down to the warm hospitality and great food we were given at the Park Hotel. A return trip is definitely on the cards. Out & about
Sail back in time Michelle Rushton takes her family on a voyage down memory lane to unlock the secrets of a magnificent waterway
WITH my dad being a Salford lad, he has been eager to get back to his roots and explore the redeveloped Quays in Greater Manchester’s waterfront. So what better Father’s Day gift to give him than a family trip on the Manchester Ship Canal Cruise? Operated by Mersey Ferries, the Cruise travels down Britain’s grandest canal on a journey between Liverpool and Salford Quays. Dad was delighted with his gift voucher but it was quite a while before we embarked on our journey, as the cruises are so popular, they get booked up fast. As we wanted to travel on a weekend, the earliest date we could book was the first Saturday in October. I was a bit worried about the weather, but luckily for us it was a crisp and sunny autumnal day and the waters were as still as ice – perfect sailing weather! So the Rushton family, including my mum and dad, partner Mike and children Daniel and Isla, arrived nice and early at the Pier Head Ferry Terminal in Liverpool. Our vessel for the day was to be The Snowdrop which we boarded with ease and I was pleased to learn we could take Isla’s buggy on board. We found a good spot inside by the window and set sail on the 35-mile voyage to Salford. There was a small licensed cafe on board serving refreshments but we were sat next to a large party celebrating a 50th birthday who had brought a generous buffet so we benefited from their leftover cakes and sandwiches! It took just over six hours to get to Salford, taking in a wide variety of scenery from historic buildings, industry and factories, to rolling countryside and modern canalside apartments. Throughout the journey, a commentator explained how the canal’s construction shaped forever the cities, and the people, of Liverpool, Manchester and the North West of England – linking the counties of Merseyside, Cheshire and Greater Manchester.

He explained how, for many, the Manchester Ship Canal was a place of work, from the gangsters who originally carved out the canal to sailors aboard ships carrying cotton from America to feed the bustling mills of Manchester. The commentator had an encyclopedic knowledge of the canal and never stopped talking throughout the whole journey! Daniel and Isla enjoyed exploring the ship and climbing up to the top deck. In hindsight, they were perhaps a little too young for the cruise at the age of five and two, as it was hard to keep them entertained for six hours and we spent a lot of time chasing them around the ship. You couldn’t take your eyes off them for one second, else they would be trying to climb up the ropes to peer over the side! We had to keep a tight hold of them which was a little hard work, but we did it in shifts and when off duty, it was nice to relax with a glass of wine and watch the world go by, taking in the stunning scenery. To be fair to Mersey Ferries, the information leaflet does advise that the cruise is more suitable for older children. But they loved looking and learning about the passing ships and were fascinated when we passed through the locks and under the bridges which remain mostly unchanged since they were built over a century ago. Before we knew it we were sailing into the Salford Quays which has changed beyond all recognition from when my dad was a small boy with its futuristic architecture. We were allowed to disembark for a two and a half hour stopover, giving my dad chance to have a walk around reminisce about the good old days. We crossed the bridge over the canal to the Imperial War Museum, which is housed in an iconic aluminium building designed to represent a globe torn apart by conflict. It’s a great, free attraction for people of all ages
bringing to life stories of how war has shaped lives over the past century. It certainly brought back many memories for my parents, who were born during the Second World War but it was also brilliant for the children with lots of hands-on, interactive exhibits. They could feel and smell nasty surprises at ‘The Trench,’ (including soldiers’ stinky socks!), camouflage themselves against different backgrounds, have a go at code-breaking and check out the fighter planes, war ships and tanks. We then had a little look in The Lowry, home to the famous Manchester artist’s work and theatre, and had a little retail therapy in the Lowry Outlet Mall before stopping to eat at The Real China restaurant where we enjoyed a sumptuous Oriental feast. After a long and tiring but interesting day, we caught the return bus back to Liverpool (included in the ticket) which was rather uneventful. The bus broke down – but a replacement immediately appeared so it didn’t hold us up in any way. We were so tired and the children were flat out by the time we got back to Liverpool after all that fresh air, exploring and heritage. We all agreed that the Manchester Ship Canal Cruise makes a great day out – although maybe we’ll wait until the children are a little older for our return voyage! Tickets cost £38 for adults and £36 for children and over 60s. Gift vouchers are also available priced £38 per person to purchase either online at www.merseyferries.co.uk, by phone on 0151 330 1444 or at the Ferry terminals at Liverpool Pier Head; Seacombe or Woodside. Vouchers can be used for a full year after purchase. Cruises are seasonal and advanced booking is required.

Irish charm Emma Thompson and her family cross the water to discover if the grass really is greener over in the Emerald Isle...
READY for a well-earned break, the Emerald Isle was calling us as we planned our countryside get-away in a cosy lake-side cottage. Travelling light isn’t easy now we have an 18-month-old – not to mention my extra shoes, GHDs and ‘just in case’ clothes – so planning a car-cation with StenaLine to Ireland was a great idea. We simply had to load up the car boot with everything but the kitchen sink and off we went to Holyhead to catch the ferry over to Dublin Port. Having upgraded to StenaLine Plus we drove aboard and went to find the Stena Plus Lounge where we could help ourselves to an array of snacks and drinks, latte in hand we settled in for the journey. Me and my other half soon checked out the breakfast menu and ordered eggs Benedict, brought to our table, it was really tasty and better than I expected, it was great we didn’t have to queue and order food with little Ben in tow. Exploring the boat we found the children’s small soft play area with a TV screen and wall puzzles which helped keep Ben entertained, plus there’s also an arcade area for older kids and adults, and we even braced the wind to venture outside and take a seat on the deck. Just over three hours later we drove off the ship and headed for our Ireland cottage retreat. We all know Dublin for its fabulous nightlife but venture just 50 minutes away and it feels like another world all together. We discovered Blessington has a lovely village feel with plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants, but it was 10 minutes later driving up a single-track road that I started to wonder if we’d taken a wrong turn! But I soon saw plenty of signs for Abhainn Ri Cottages and we arrived in a beautiful spot overlooking Blessington Lake in county Wicklow. Set on a real working farm, there are
four modern, yet homely, semi-detached cottages, alongside a grand farmhouse that has just been beautifully renovated for group bookings and, the owner’s home. The owner, Niamh, welcomed us to the cottage and briefly explained where everything was, and knowing I had my little boy with me had thoughtfully included a folding safety gate, highchair, travel cot and blankets – which all came in very handy! I quickly eyed up our ‘welcome package’ of homemade scones with a pot of butter and jam (yum), fresh eggs and milk. Checking out the rooms, there was plenty of space with three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a kitchen/diner/lounge – all spotlessly clean, with modern fixtures yet just the right amount of country charm.
No sooner had we settled in – noting the lovely wood burning stove in the lounge area – we were all eager to head back outside and take a walk to enjoy the scenery. Ben loved the cows right outside as well as the fact he could run around in the fields, which can all be accessed by stiles leading down to the lake. While exploring this working farm we came across donkeys, goats and sheep and it was great to be able to pop out of the cottage at any time and visit the animals with Ben. What’s more, alongside the chickens, there was a little covered play area which included a slide, swing and old tractor. After a great night’s sleep in the comfy beds we jumped up early, enjoyed the eggs for breakfast, then headed out to Dublin Zoo. The lions and tigers put on a great display for us prowling around, scratching trees and walking right up to the glass. We also saw elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees and a wonderful open ‘African savanna’ which includes giraffes, zebra, ostrich and rhino all openly roaming around. We really did have a great family day out, while Robert and I were impressed by all the big cats, Ben, a typical toddler, loved the animal farm area, as well as the penguins and sea lions swimming around – oh, and all the play areas around the zoo.
On our second night at the cottage we decided to take advantage of the homecooked and delivered meals that you can pre-order. A delicious pot of Wicklow Irish lamb stew turned up complete with creamy mashed potatoes and tasty roast vegetables. It was delicious, the flavoursome lamb simply melted in your mouth and the gravy had a lovely rich taste, a perfect way to spend the evening relaxing without having to cook! Browsing through the handy guide in the cottage I discovered the impressive Russborough House just a five minute drive away and in the opposite direction is Hollywood village. For walkers, heading towards the Wicklow mountains provides endless beautiful scenic trails and Glendalough is also a really popular spot to visit. For us, the charming Abhainn Ri Cottage was the ideal escape, we loved being surrounded by countryside and impressive views while still having home comforts and being close enough to those all-important shops and restaurants.
