... to buying BLOCKED: Leaves can easily clog up your guttering
Top Tip Got a powdery internal wall (or ceiling) and don’t know what to do about it? Scrape or sand and clean the wall, then use Polycell 3 In 1 Problem Wall Primer (£27.49 for 2.5ltr, Homebase), which stabilises powdery and flaky walls (and seals porous walls and bare plaster) so they’re ready to paint. You just apply it with a roller in the normal way, and one coat should do the trick. Prepare external walls in the same way, but use a stabilising solution/primer instead – both Sandtex and Dulux Decorator Centres do good ones – before painting.
Don’t let roof leave you gutted
G
UTTERING is designed to protect your home’s exterior walls from rain by channelling it from the roof to a drain in the ground via the gutter and downpipes. If they become damaged or blocked, it may put your home at risk of water penetration and damp. The type of gutter depends on the roof. Sloping roofs have an eaves gutter, flat roofs have a parapet gutter, and a number of sloping roofs meeting at one point have a valley gutter, which links up with either an eaves or parapet gutter. There are also different shapes of gutter. Standard ones are semi-circular and run into circular downpipes, square ones are bigger and so ideal for large properties and places prone to rain, and ogee ones have straight back edges and fluted front edges and can be used with both square and circular downpipes. Most gutters and downpipes are plastic these days, which are cheaper, lighter and easier to work with than metal ones, but many period properties still have the original metal ones. Over time, these can rust, causing damp, and in severe cases, the metal can disintegrate. While

Autumn’s here and it’s only a matter of time before the trees start to shed their leaves, so check over your home’s guttering now, says Julia Gray plastic guttering is usually a better option, if you live in a listed building and it has metal guttering, you’ll probably have to replace it like for like – consult your local council’s conservation office first. Occasionally, planning permission is required to repair or maintain drainpipes – see the interactive house at www.planningportal.gov.uk for more information. To stop gutters getting blocked, simply fit gutter guards (try the 4m Gutter Leaf Guard, £8.79, Wickes). These are grates that block debris but still allow rainwater to get through. Alternatively, try the Hedgehog (4m brush, £14,99, see www.hedgehoggutterbrush.com), which is a long, hedgehog-like brush that sits in the gutter and keeps out leaves and the like because they bounce off or get stuck on the ’spines’. If you don’t have something like this fitted, you should make regular checks for blockages, especially when the leaves are falling from the trees.
Leaves are one of the main culprits when it comes to blocked gutters, but you can find all kinds of things in them, including plants happily growing away. If you notice that water is falling sharply from one place, this is probably where the blockage is. Simply scoop it out with your fingers or a trowel, taking full safety precautions when using a ladder. If you have plastic guttering and it’s leaking, the cause is likely to be one of the seals (synthetic rubber gaskets). To fix this, squeeze out the seal from between the two sections of guttering, clean off the area and replace the seal, before clipping the sections back in place. A leaking joint can usually be sorted with sealant. To do this, clean the joint with a wire brush and then use a screwdriver to remove the old jointing material. Finally, squeeze roof and gutter sealant all around the pipe to fill the cavity, smooth it off and remove any excess. This simple measure should solve the problem and extend the life of the guttering.

Not only does it give bare and previously painted metal six years of protection against rust, it can also be applied straight to rust, so it’s a real time-saver. It’s drip resistant on vertical surfaces, which is a big bonus, and you don’t
have to use a primer (unless you’re painting non-ferrous and galvanised metal) and undercoat, saving you even more time. The finish is really good and it’s touch dry in just an hour, perfect for showery days.

Make the move to a family home with mayoral approval by JANET TANSLEY
J
ONES Homes has officially opened its new development in St Helens. Mayor, Canon Councillor Geoff Almond, who cut the ribbon on the Eccleston Grange site, said: “St Helens is a great place in which to live and I can imagine many families making a lovely home in Eccleston. “I took a tour of the site and the showhome and was really impressed with Jones Homes’ plans and the quality.” Interest in the development has been high since building work began but now buyers can get a better idea of what they can expect since the door was unlocked to the Bedworth showhome. A detached property with an integral single garage, the Bedworth offers plenty of space for easy family living. The ground floor features a spacious lounge with double doors onto a high gloss contemporary black kitchen and a family diner. Further double doors lead into a conservatory (which is optional) and then out onto the garden. The first floor boasts four double bedrooms and a family bathroom with the master bedroom also benefiting from an en-suite. The other three bedrooms have been styled as a guest room and children’s bedrooms. Decorated throughout in grey, black and purple, the Bedworth makes maximum use of light and space to showcase contemporary family living. Denise Caldwell, sales director at Jones Homes, says: “We were delighted that the Mayor was able to join us and honoured that he officially

REY’s so sexy and sophisticated. No not the masterful hero of bestselling novel, 50 Shades Of Grey, but the decor colour. Millions of women may be swooning over Christian Grey and his wooing of Anastasia Steele, but designers have taken all shades of grey to heart. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey’s shed its cold, boring, institutional image, and is proving its power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone,” advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm – white based greys feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create interest and depth.” Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, with a paint such as Farrow & Ball’s Down Pipe matt emulsion, and a matching gloss finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge. “Dark grey is the perfect colour to showcase artwork, pictures and mirrors on your walls. It’s far more effective than white as it makes them stand out,” he says. “Alternatively, put the focus on a piece of grey furniture, or enhance a setting with accessories. Make a statement by painting a front door grey – it’s this season’s black – and you’ll ensure you make an entrance, simple, stylish and very current.” Grey’s full of surprises and will seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

Face the wall
If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. “Grey is a wonderful colour with so many nuances, from soft, pinky ’dove greys’ to deep charcoal tones,” says Edward Bulmer, director of specialist paint company, Pots of Paint. “To find the one grey you love –
experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they change with the light in your home throughout the day. “It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or sideboard.”
Going grey B&Q’s excellent grey paint range, features one particular star, Colours matt emulsion in grey slate, £13.98 for 2.5 litres, which perfectly complements a grey wallpaper scattered with yellow canaries, Colours Opera Aviary wallpaper, £8.98 a roll, available from October.

Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries, says Jane Cowdry, founder of soft furnishings online boutique, Lily Matthews. “The key to using grey is layering and texture,” she advises. “Using one tone throughout will look flat and dull but mix in wool, silk, linen, and velvet and you have a sophisticated uplifting room. “This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast.”

Classics with a As spring bulb planting continues Hannah Stephenson looks at a trial of new daffodils and tulips to find out if new varieties are better than old favourites
W
ITH a wide choice of spring bulbs now available in garden centres and from bulb specialists, it’s difficult to know which varieties to choose and is often tempting to stay with old favourites. But there is a flurry of new bulbs worth trying, according to a trial of daffodils and tulips by Consumers’ Association magazine Which? Gardening which also suggests that new varieties produce better results than some older types. Triallists found that the new bulbs had a more regular height and consistent flowering time, giving an overall better display than the older ones. Last autumn, triallists tested 53 new types of spring-flowering daffodils and tulips, growing them alongside five well-established varieties to use as a comparison. The bulbs were planted in early November, the narcissus twice their own depth and tulips three times their depth. The bulbs had to withstand baking sun, high winds and torrential rain in spring. Among the recommended daffodils were Narcissus ‘Lieke’ (Walkers Bulbs), which was the longest-lasting bloom, whose dainty flowers have a green eye and delicious scent. It bloomed for 45
DURABLE: The Narcissus 'Lieke' was the longest-lasting bloom while, right T. 'Black Jack' (Peter Nyssen) blooms with a velvet-like sheen days, producing three stems from each bulb and three flowers on each stem from April to May, the 45cm stems staying upright despite heavy downpours. Other daffodil winners included the dwarf ‘Sweet Love’ (Peter Nyssen; Unwins), which produced the best scent, while the small, nodding, cream flowers with a
yellow centre shed the rain with ease, and ‘Swoop’ (De Jaeger), another pint-sized type which produced the most flowers of all the varieties. From 23 bulbs, more than 80 stems were produced, with swept-back yellow petals and nodding heads, perfect for naturalising around trees and woodland.
Best Of The Bunch Physalis (Chinese lantern) THESE unusual perennials, with their golden papery lantern-like seedheads around the edible fruits, come into their own in the autumn. The eye-catching lanterns are also great for cutting and using as dried-plant material for winter flower arrangements, by cutting the fruiting stems as the lanterns turn in colour and hanging them upside down in an airing cupboard to dry. They do flower in summer, although the white blooms, which look a bit like potato flowers, are insignificant.
It’s best to grow physalis away from other plants as their underground stems are invasive. They will grow in virtually any soil in sun or shade, but put them in shade, dry areas under trees and shrubs where little else will grow, rather than in borders with other plants. If you do plant them with other plants, cut around the crown with a spade each autumn, to stop them taking over. The most popular variety is P. alkekengi ‘Franchetii’, while named varieties such as ‘Gigantea’ are harder to find.
Many of the new tulips trialled also gave an excellent display, including Tulipa ‘Dior’ (HW Hyde & Son), which began to flower early, in April, producing several large double flowers in a luxurious shade of pink at the top of each stem. If you’re looking for unusual, the tulip ‘Green Star’ (Sarah Raven) may suit you, with its slender,
elegant green flowers with cream tips held on long straight stems, daring enough to catch the eye but without jarring. They were grown in pots with other tulips and found to be great companions for pinks, whites, purples and striped varieties, flowering in May and reaching a height of 45cm. Other stars of the show included
Things to do this week ● Store apples and pears for use over the winter. ● Sow hardy annuals to be overwintered outdoors in cold areas. They may require protecting with cloches or horticultural fleece over the winter. ● Move late-flowering chrysanthemums in pots into the greenhouse before the first frost. ● Continue to remove weeds so that they do not shed seeds which will remain in the soil over the winter. ● Keep borders tidy by cutting back flowered stems of border perennials. ● Now that dahlias are flowering, mark the best ones of each variety so that they can be propagated for next year. ● Protect ripening plums and cherries from birds if you can and pick the fruit as it becomes ripe.
● Cover the rows of perpetual (autumn) strawberries with cloches or horticultural fleece at night when it becomes cold, to help them to ripen. ● Finish cutting out fruited shoots and tying in the replacements on fan-trained peach trees. ● Take cuttings of tender perennials including pelargoniums, fuchsias and penstemons, which can be overwintered under cover. ● Reduce ventilation and watering on vines in the greenhouse as they ripen. ● Lift clumps of chives and divide them into manageable segments, plant them in large pots, water well and leave the pots outside so that the cold induces dormancy. In December they can be brought in to produce early shoots next year. French tarragon, mint and sorrel can also be forced in this way.

UNUSUAL: Clockwise from above: 'Swoop' (De Jaeger); T. 'La Belle Epoque'; 'Green Star' (Sarah Raven); Tulipa 'Dior' (HW Hyde & Son). T. ‘Black Jack’ (Peter Nyssen), one of the darkest varieties with blooms with a velvety sheen which flowered earlier than old favourite ‘Queen of Night’ and persisted for five weeks. They have long straight stems which would be good for cutting and combine well with white and pink tulips. Those who want their tulips to
withstand pounding rain should plump for T. ‘La Belle Epoque’, whose fully double apricot flowers, reminiscent of a peony, continued flowering through the rain. The best new parrot tulip was ‘Irene Parrot’ (Peter Nyssen), bred from the popular ‘Prinses Irene’ and has mid-sized orange flowers that are frilled, cut and flamed to
give an exotic look. Unlike other parrot tulips, it didn’t flop under the weight of heavy rain during the trial and continued to flower for 31 days. Stocks of new varieties of bulb can be limited so order them now. ● Full details of the trial are in the September issue of Which? Gardening.

Good enough to eat Harvesting sweetcorn Sweetcorn straight from the plant tastes so different to shop-bought varieties, especially if it is cooked immediately, because the sugars start to turn to starch as soon as the cob is removed from its parent. If you’re growing sweetcorn for the first time, you may be wondering about the best time to harvest the cobs while they’re at their plumpest and juiciest and before they begin to go over. Look at the tassels on the end of the plants. If they are starting to shrivel, the corn may be ready. Peel back the leafy sheaf and gently press your thumbnail into a grain. If the cob is ready, a creamy liquid will squirt out. If the liquid is watery, leave the cob a few days and test again. Once picked, eat the corn as soon as possible, steamed and served with butter and black pepper, or cook it in its husk on the barbecue. Harvest through September but stop once the grains are doughy when pressed with your nail: the cobs are over-ripe.
3 ways to ... Protect plants in winter
1
Cover tender or young plants with cloches, netting, newspaper or old woollens if frosts are forecast.
2
Store bulbs, corms and tubers in a frost-free garage or windowless shed.
3
Pot up tender perennials, cutting back the shoots on established plants to about 10-15cm to keep them compact and save space, and move them into a greenhouse.
Housing market is ‘treading water’ after prices fall THE HOUSING market continues to “tread water”, the Halifax said today, after prices fell for the second month in a row in August. The average house price was £160,256 last month, which was 0.4% lower than the previous month, cancelling out two previous rises as prices drift back to the level seen at the end of 2011. Halifax housing economist Martin Ellis said easing inflation should boost spending power and support house prices in the coming months, but added that the market was expected to remain flat heading into 2013. Today’s survey is at
odds with a recent report by the Nationwide which showed that house prices rose 1.3% in August – their biggest monthly rebound in more than two-anda-half years – although they remained 0.7% lower than a year ago. House price data has been volatile in recent months amid low volumes as banks rein in mortgage lending. Barclays analyst Blerina Uruci said that while monthly data had been volatile, a better underlying picture was painted by comparing prices over the past three months with the previous quarter. The Halifax data for
this measure have now fallen for the 11th month in a row, she said. While the economy is set to remain weak for the rest of the year, analysts say prices may be underpinned by a shortage of supply of new homes for sale, particularly if employment data remain strong. And there are hopes that the Treasury and the Bank of England’s new £80 billion Funding for Lending scheme, which aims to encourage banks to lend more, will help boost the market in coming months. Analysts have so far seen little evidence that
the scheme has done much to increase the availability of mortgages for people with lower deposits and first-time buyers. But recent Bank of England figures showed that mortgage approvals increased slightly in July compared with an 18-month low recorded in June, providing hope of an improvement to come. Ms Uruci said: “We expect house prices to be marginally lower in 2012 compared with last year as the weakness in demand is likely to be offset by tight housing supply and support coming from the Funding for Lending Scheme.”
FALLING PRICES: The cost of buying a home fell for the second time in August, according to a survey

AYLOR Wimpey is maintaining its strong sales momentum through the Government-backed NewBuy scheme, breaking through the 200 sales mark only weeks after reaching 100 sales. The home builder believes that NewBuy is continuing to be well received by both first and secondtime purchasers. The NewBuy scheme means credit-worthy first-time buyers may now only need to save a 5% deposit before they can get on the property ladder. In addition, home movers with limited equity in their existing house will also benefit from the increase in availability of 95% loan-to-value mortgages. Christine Aitken, regional sales and marketing director for Taylor Wimpey North West, said: “The fact that we’ve already reached 200 sales through NewBuy at Taylor Wimpey is testament to our commitment to supporting home buyers by enabling them to move affordably. The scheme has been an invaluable selling tool as it has supported many types of home mover, including first-time buyers and those moving up the property ladder. “Since its launch, NewBuy is now being offered by five mortgage lenders and over 15 house builders,

HIS impressive home, built in 1886, forms part of an old school and enjoys an enviable location in historic SeftonVillage. Originally planned as a five bedroom house, the owners chose a more spacious three/four bedroom layout when they lovingly converted the property 10 years ago. Inside, the home is exceptionally well presented, and boasts many character features including original sandstone windows, internal beams and trusses. On the ground floor, an entrance vestibule gives access to an attractive main lounge with Amtico flooring and steps down to a rear reception room which features an Inglenook fireplace housing a dual fuel stove. The stylish kitchen has solid oak cabinets with granite work surfaces and comes fully fitted with a range cooker, dishwasher and American fridge freezer. It opens onto a fabulous entertaining space with French doors leading to the garden, plus there is a utility room and cloaks/wc. On the first floor is a master bedroom suite with exposed beams, a Juliette balcony and fitted walkthrough closet which gives access to an L-shaped en-suite shower room incorporating his and hers wash basins, a wc, shower cubicle and

ISCERNING homebuyers can discover the benefits of living in a highspecification Redrow property as two brand new homes are now open in Widnes. Designed with families in mind, the newly-launched show homes at Barrow’s Green can help prospective purchasers to imagine making themselves at home at the development. Anita Williams, sales director for Redrow Homes (NW), said: “The interiors have been created so visitors can see how the properties function as real family homes. We’ve really thought about who might live in each of the houses; the style they would choose and also the practical elements that would be important to them. “The four-bedroom ‘Cambridge’ is an elegant home with a ‘boutique hotel’ feel and has been designed for a family with two older children, whereas the three-bedroom ‘Warwick’ has been given a more youthful, fresher feel for a young family or a couple buying their first home.” Inside, the Cambridge has a simple, elegant colour palette. The lounge features classical oak furniture, and the luxurious master bedroom has a soft ambience with delicate oak furniture, a lilac
