GUIDE ... to home improvement

Natural flooring is an alternative to carpet that you perhaps haven’t considered, but it has lots of advantages, says Julia Gray

ANT a different kind of carpet? Forget wool and synthetic fibres and go for natural flooring, such as seagrass, coir and jute, instead. If looked after properly, this flooring is no harder to maintain than carpet and, unlike synthetic carpets, it doesn’t attract dust, making it a good choice for allergy sufferers. Natural flooring is made of plant fibres, but the plants are usually grown in Asia and other places thousands of miles away, so it’s often not as environmentally friendly as it might seem. Wool and cotton can be combined with other natural fibres to produce flooring offering the best of both worlds, but if you’d rather be a purist, these are the most popular types of natural flooring:

50mm deep in one go, which is pretty deep. Best of all, it’s so lightweight and easy to use that little or no sanding is required, saving you time and effort. It can’t be drilled in to but it can be painted and used to fill plaster, plasterboard, coving and mouldings.

Coir

Coir is a good value and hard-wearing alternative to carpet. Made from coconut husks, it’s coarse and durable and so perfect for areas that get lots of use, such as halls and stairs – its highly textured finish and strong fibres stand up well to wear and tear. Water stains coir, so don’t use it in kitchens and bathrooms.

Jute

In contrast, jute is fine, soft and silky, making it ideal for rooms with light foot traffic, such as bedrooms. It’s not recommended for use in bathrooms and kitchens (it can shrink after absorbing water), on stairs (it can be slippery and isn’t particularly hard-wearing) and in areas of bright sunlight (it can fade). The most popular options are chunky tweeds and fine herringbone and tight boucle weaves, available in a wide range of natural shades.

Sisal

Unusual floors are natural but nice

Sisal is a strong, versatile, hard-wearing and anti-static natural fibre and can generally be used for flooring throughout the home, although it’s not suitable for high-moisture rooms. It can be woven into a huge range of patterns, weaves and colours (it can be dyed, unlike most natural flooring), including metallics: shimmering strips of sisal make a tched, even if stair or hall carpet Slate floor tiles can easily get scra tches and give extra special. While you should always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for the type of flooring you have, tips for maintaining natural flooring include using doormats by outside doors, vacuuming regularly, putting something underneath chairs and sofas on castors and immediately treating stains and spills in the recommended way. Some natural flooring has a latex backing, which helps to prevent dirt and dust building up underneath, and some can be treated with a stain inhibitor, which is obviously one of the easiest ways to keep it looking good.

Romancing

Creating a romantic home can give you pleasure way beyond Valentine’s Day. Interior designer to the stars Sera Hersham-Loftus reveals her sumptuous style secrets

T

HERE’S something of the diva about Sera Hersham-Loftus, as she lounges on a daybed covered in a profusion of silk throws and embroidered cushions. It’s the sort of sultry, seductive setting she specialises in as an interior decorator, which has made her a favourite with celebrities from Yoko Ono and Rachel Stevens to Patsy Kensit. “My signature is a mix of romanticism, passion and playfulness,” she says, as she treats me to a tour of her home, revealing as we go the secrets and inspiration that went into creating such an intimate space. With Valentine’s Day approaching, it feels like the perfect time to be here. Sera’s home simply oozes romance. But St Valentine’s Day isn’t the only reason she’s invited me in – Sera has also recently published a book, Seductive Interiors, showcasing her heavenly home. “I like to live in a loose, informal style and use my rooms like an artist uses a canvas - to test out ideas,” she explains. “That means the decor’s constantly changing to reflect new approaches. I’ve always been passionate about moving the energy around in rooms so that they never get boring or stale.” She stresses that it needn’t be expensive to refresh an interior or make it special for an occasion. “I don’t buy anything that’s madly expensive – most of my furnishings come from flea markets or vintage stores. I collect antique textiles and keep them in closets all over the house. “Then, when I want an effect, I can drape them over furniture, turn them into wall hangings, use as tablecloths or simply disguise a messy corner.” There’s a charming faded grandeur feel to the three-storey house, whose exterior is painted brown and explains its name, Chocolate Towers. Although it’s akin to entering a Hollywood film set, it’s also served as a family home for Sera and her three children. On the ground floor, there’s a jungle fantasy dreamscape in the living area where a sofa takes centre stage, flanked by potted palms, a profusion of peacock feathers, a disco ball overhead light, and a fur throw on the painted board floor. Unsurprisingly, it’s been a venue for numerous magazine fashion shoots, featuring stars such as Lara Stone and Kate Moss. “An ultra-moody feel is essential for a space where you want to instantly relax and feel nurtured,” says Sera. The front parlour is painted black with white plaster details and has a shimmering wall of metallic effect paper featuring Marilyn Monroe. A 1930s leather Chesterfield in another room, the ’gothic parlour’, has been

hand-patched by Sera with leather from old motorbike jackets, lace from vintage dresses and velvets from old drapes found in flea markets. Above it hangs a Biba nude vintage photograph. “It’s all characteristic of my style which essentially is a concoction of enchanting soft lighting, antique and bohemian furnishings, oriental bric-a-brac, and more than a teaspoon of the blues and rock’n’roll!” she says. There are no jarring overhead lights, as Sera prefers a soft lighting scheme relying mainly on lamps. Hers are embellished with

peachy fringed fabrics and lingerie lace. She once made a successful collection of lampshades fashioned from vintage corsets. “I love looking for quirky, interesting touches which give character and personality to decor, but I don’t believe in clutter. “I’d rather rely on a few star pieces to shine out, whether they’re floor-standing gilded vases or an ornate folding screen.” Her roomy attic bedroom is an antique oasis, with arrangements of potted palms, highlighted by uplights, and occasional tables perfect for displaying trinkets, delineating each area.

Her bed is dressed with white bed linen and a French linen vintage bedcover, and a sultry colonial-style is achieved with muslin hangings and an ivory lace curtain. “Dressing a bed with Indian sari fabrics, velvet throws, and piles of pillows and cushions will make it irresistibly sensual and feminine. I add to the atmosphere by burning frankincense and rose essential oils,” she says. At one end of the bedroom is her bathing area which resembles an Asian retreat. The bath has intricately carved panels, 1930s screens, and a Fortuny silk chandelier and tall palm plants, all of which make it a

She’s worked her magic on actress and designer Sadie Frost’s home (which also features in Sera’s book), embellishing it with ’home jewellery’, her bespoke lampshades and cushions. The actress’s bedroom has a mahogany four-poster bed dressed in layers of silk and topped with an embroidered gold coverlet. There’s a relaxing area by a window, screened with plantation shutters, complete with a button-back sofa and arrangements of exotic blooms. Her bathroom is a colourful haven for pampering and relaxation, which Sera describes as

Boulevard-strip-cum-Biba-babe. Dark furnishings and pots holding lavish foliage are illuminated by candelabra lamps and a kooky neon strip light. The staircase walls act as a gallery for paintings and photographs of Sadie and her family and friends. “It’s a glamorous, bohemian home which oozes class and taste, and a sanctuary for anyone who enters,” says Sera. She believes we should dress our homes as we dress ourselves - to suit our mood and reflect our changing tastes. For anybody wanting to turn their home into a homage to romance, Chocolate Towers will certainly prove a wealth of inspiration.

... to outside

Say it with a garden As Valentine’s Day looms, Hannah Stephenson turns her thoughts to creating a romantic garden which will last a lot longer than a bunch of flowers

V

ALENTINE’S DAY will come and go, but you can create a lover’s paradise in your outdoor space, incorporating all the senses of touch, smell, sight, taste and sound. Whether it’s a woodland garden or flowing fields or a rustic cottage garden bursting with fragrant blooms, deliciously scented roses and clematis growing around an arbour, or waves of purple wisteria blooms draping over the walls of a house, all gardeners can have their share of romance. Even on the smallest plot, you can create a touch of romance with old-fashioned plants, winding walkways, rustic arches, willow trellises and soft climbing blooms. Choose your plants carefully and place the scented varieties where their delicious fragrance will come into its own, near to the house or bordering a well-used walkway. Climbers including the fragrant honeysuckle or repeat-flowering roses, such as the silvery pink hybrid musk ‘Felicia’ or ‘Old Blush China’, can fill an area with sweet scent. Informal planting creates a soft palette, with dainty plants such as violas or bell-flowered campanulas mingling in front of taller specimens such as delphiniums, lupins and the many wonderful varieties of clematis. Irises, peonies and gentle wild-meadow flowers can also be incorporated. Group your plants together in small drifts, and you’ll be rewarded with a lovely, informal display of scent and colour all summer long. I think a soft colour palette of whites, soft and deep pinks, blues, mauves and purples is ideal for the romantic garden. Keep the design low key, with soft

edges and curved lines. Make sure the emphasis is on the plants themselves, although you can create a focal point from a statue or tall obelisk or wigwam adorned with sweet peas or clematis and climbing roses. One arch in my own garden is planted with Clematis ‘Nelly Moser’, a large pink and white-striped variety, and Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, which form a perfect combination of soft colour and scent. Lavender and nepeta (catmint) can fringe borders, spilling out into winding paths around the garden, while fragrant herbs such as thyme can be planted in the cracks in pathways to soften the effect. But try to keep any heavily scented plants which are planted in abundance separate so they don’t dominate the group. Among my favourite shrubs which are easy to include in a romantic garden is the philadelphus (mock orange), which produces masses of white flowers in early summer and whose scent can fill the whole garden and beyond. A good choice is the tall variety P. ‘Beauclerk’, which grows to 2.5m (8ft) and can make an informal windbreak. If you have room, make a secret place in the garden which you can’t see from the house, such as a hidden archway over a bench, where you can sit during those summer evenings for peace and solace while taking in the scents and sounds of the garden. When planning your romantic garden, make sure you take note of where the sun rises and sets, so that you create your seating area to enjoy the sun as it goes down at the end of the day, or when you are likely to use that area most.

Good enough to eat Dividing mint NOW is the time to dig up existing mint plants which you want to place somewhere else or which has simply outgrown its space. Mint propagates itself by rooted runners and is really invasive if not kept in check. Cut the runner into sections, ensuring that each has some healthy root and shoot. It’s better to plant the root cuttings in a big plastic pot or bucket with drainage holes and then plunge the whole thing into the soil. That way it can be easily lifted in the future and won’t invade everything around it. You can also keep a few sections of runners in pots in the house for daily use.

BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL: Honeysuckle creates a beautiful scent in a garden

If you have room for a bed of annuals, go again for soft, fragrant plants such as night-scented stock and nicotiana, along with other cottage garden favourites such as

aquilegia. In the evening, candlelight comes into its own to create a romantic setting, so place some close to the plants you want to highlight and include some

citronella candles near where you are to keep mosquitoes at bay. Long after Valentine’s Day, you’ll have the perfect setting for romance in your garden.

Things to do this week

● Knock any remaining snow from trees and shrubs to stop them becoming misshapen and keep an area of the pond ice-free. ● Firm in plants lifted by frost or windrock. ● Sow quick-growing perennials such as campanulas and poppies to flower this year. ● Order summer-flowering bulbs, corms and tubers, especially if you are planning to grow any that need starting off indoors, such as tuberous begonias. ● Pot autumn-rooted fuchsia cuttings into small, individual pots. ● Winter dig the vegetable garden if the ground isn’t too hard or waterlogged. ● Test your soil to see if the pH needs adjusting or if the soil is deficient in any major nutrients. ● Put cloches in place to warm the soil for early sowings of vegetables in March. ● Weather permitting, take hardwood cuttings of hardy climbers to save time later in the spring. ● Prune newly-planted bushes of gooseberries and red and white currants by cutting back strong new shoots by half their length to form the main branches. ● Sow lily seed under glass, not more than 1cm deep in pots or boxes. ● Continue to remove rubbish and debris from the garden to reduce the number of hiding spots and breeding grounds for slugs and snails.

Best Of The Bunch Scilla

THESE pretty clump-formers are a common sight in springtime, providing a splash of colour in sun or dappled shade under deciduous trees or shrubs. But there are also many winter-flowering dwarfs for the rockery which also brighten up patios if they are planted in containers. A very earlyflowering variety is S. mischtschenkoana, which has pale blue flowers with a tiny deeper blue stripe down each petal. They go well among snowdrops and winter aconites. Good scillas for rock gardens include S. bifolia, which produces loose sprays of star-shaped blue to purple-blue flowers in early spring and will increase rapidly, and S. siberica ‘Spring Beauty’, whose bell-shaped rich blue flowers appear in spring. Scilla thrive in any well-drained, moist soil. Overcrowded clumps should be divided in August or September and replanted immediately.

3 ways Minimise snow damage to ... and waterlogging

1

Lay waterlogged plants in pots on their sides. Later, if they seem to have been damaged, be prepared to repot into smaller pots using fresh compost after removing dead and rotting tissue.

2

Try to keep off saturated soil until it is workable to avoid worsening the conditions.

3

Prune out frost-damaged foliage when effects of freezing begin to appear and apply a dressing of balanced fertiliser in the spring, mulching over the root area.

Rent trap keeping families off property ladder – Shelter THE HUGE scale of the “rent trap” holding families back from owning their own home has been highlighted by charity Shelter. Annual private rents have risen by almost £300 year-on-year on average across England and in some areas they have increased by thousands, the charity’s analysis of Government figures found. Its report argued that the private rental sector is “no longer fit for purpose” and has outgrown its role in primarily providing accommodation for students and young professionals. Rents rose by 2.8% or £297 annually across England between 2011 and 2012, leaving tenants with little or no leftover cash to save up to buy their own home as wages remained static, the charity said. The average monthly private rent in England rose to £793 last year, the report said. Surrey Heath and Elmbridge in

the South East were named as the areas with the fastest-rising increases, recording average annual rises of £1,756 and £2,178 respectively. Rents have soared as would-be home buyers have remained trapped in the rental sector, either because they cannot meet lenders’ toughened borrowing criteria or raise the typical 20% deposit. As more tenants have remained privately renting for longer, this has placed more demand on the sector, pushing rents up even higher. Annual rents rose by more than £500 in one in seven local authorities, Shelter found. The report used figures from the Valuations Office Agency (VOA). Shelter worked out the increases by comparing average private rents between October 2010 and September 2011 with typical rents between October 2011 and September 2012.

There have been some recent signs that some people are finding it easier to get access to mortgages, following the introduction of a Government scheme last August to boost lending by giving lenders access to cheap finance. Lenders have recently reported an uplift in mortgage lending to first-time buyers, while the latest Bank of England figures have shown that mortgage approvals for house purchase reached their highest number in almost a year in December. However, Shelter’s research also showed that the extra pressure caused by rental increases is leaving tenants with little cash to save for a deposit. Shelter’s own research from 4,300 renters found that

more than half (55%) have £100 or less left over each month after covering rent and regular bills. Almost six in 10 (58%) tenants surveyed said that they are so financially squeezed that they are unable to put any cash away in savings, leaving them with little hope of raising a deposit to buy a home. Shelter quoted the example of teacher and mother-of-one Abi Reilly, who rents a home with her husband. She said: “With rent so high, it seems impossible for people like us to save enough to get anywhere near what we need for a deposit.” Campbell Robb, chief executive of

CALL: Shelter’s Campbell Robb

Shelter, called for the Government to do more to show how it plans to dismantle the “rent trap”. He said: “This report reveals the huge scale of the ‘rent trap’ holding back young people and families up and down the country. “Rising rents are leaving people with little or nothing to save at the end of each month, giving them little chance of ever saving enough to climb on to the property ladder.” Housing minister Mark Prisk said: “Figures from the Valuation Office Agency actually show that median rents were unchanged nationally over the past year. Rightmove have also forecast that two-thirds of landlords are planning to freeze their rents in 2013.” “For those looking to rent, we’re expanding the numbers of homes available, with a £200 million Build to Rent fund and £10billion in loan guarantees to encourage more investors into the sector.”

New by KATIE McLOUGHLIN

ERSEYSIDE homeowners don’t have to wait until they’ve sold their current property before buying somewhere new, they can move onwards and upwards with part-exchange from Elan Homes. Available at Thornton Cross, in Water Street, Thornton, partexchange could enable buyers to stave off the winter blues by giving them something to look forward to during the cold and gloomy days and nights. Andrew Robertson, senior sales manager for Elan Homes in the North, explains: “Many people may think their home looks dull and be considering giving it a makeover in February, but our message to them is ditch the DIY and move to a brand new home. They could even trade in their current property towards the cost of a new one thanks to part exchange.” Under part-exchange, Elan will arrange for the customer’s home to be valued by two local agents before making an offer on that property to help facilitate a move. The transaction could be complete in as little as 28 days, with no hidden costs or hold ups. The developer will pay for the survey and the agent’s fees and customers will even be able to stay in their current
