GUIDE ... to home improvement Top Tip HANG the wallpaper for your splashback or upstand in the normal way, but give it at least a couple of days to dry before covering it, making sure it doesn’t get marked in the meantime. The clear panel should be very slightly bigger than the piece of wallpaper to ensure it’s covered completely, with a 2mm gap at the bottom where the panel meets the worktop. This gap’s especially important if the worktop’s wooden, as it will expand and contract over time.
PRODUCT OF THE WEEK
HOB GOSSIP: House owners can liven up the appearance of their kitchens by replacing and improving the splashback, above and inset, right, behind the cooker
Cash in on a kitchen splashback D
ECEMBER’S here and if you’re looking for easy ways to freshen up your home before the hordes of friends and family descend at Christmas, the kitchen is the obvious place to start because it’ll be at the centre of the action. One way to update it in no time is to change the splashback behind the cooker or hob. These splashbacks are typically made of metal (usually stainless steel), tiles or glass (ensure the glass is designed for the job, or the cooking heat will cause it to crack) and can make quite a statement. The problem with a tiled splashback is that unless you use a dark-coloured grout, cooking splashes will discolour the grout. If this has happened to yours, you can replace the grout rather than retiling. Use a grout rake, or the Dremel Grout Removal Kit (£16.98, B&Q) and a compatible Dremel multi-tool, to remove the grout, or at least enough of it so that you can apply new grout over the top without seeing what’s beneath. The appearance of discoloured white grout can be improved by cleaning it (try HG Grout Cleaner, £3.98, B&Q) and applying a grout reviver, such as UniBond Grout Reviver in
Give your kitchen an instant injection of style and colour by updating the cooker splashback, says Julia Gray White (£5.98, B&Q), but it’s unlikely to stay white for too long. Cooker splashbacks come in standard sizes, but if you need a bespoke size, there are plenty of companies that make them to order. Glass splashbacks offer most choice, as they’re available in an enormous range of colours (and patterns), and often have matching upstands (for above the rest of the worktop). Upstands usually have to be made to measure, to get them at the right length and to have cut-outs for the sockets in the right places. If you want to create a unique splashback and/or upstand, how about using wallpaper? You may think that wallpaper’s not suitable for kitchens, but vinyl ones are designed for use in kitchens and bathrooms. And, in fact, you can use any type of wallpaper for a kitchen splashback or upstand, providing you protect it properly by fixing a heatproof clear glass panel (try the Laminate Glass Clear Splashback, £40, B&Q) over it (or an
acrylic/Perspex panel if it’s not above the cooker/hob). Provided they’re fitted properly, these panels work well because the wallpaper’s sealed in, so moisture, cooking splashes, dust and dirt can’t get to it, but you hardly notice the panel’s there. Whether you want to use the wallpaper for a splashback, upstand or both, the key thing is to make the wall as smooth and flat as possible to get the best finish. Wallpaper will cover lumpy and bumpy walls, but the clear panel on top won’t sit flat, making it hard to fix in place and seal properly. If you’ve removed an existing splashback or upstand, some filling, sanding and wiping clean may be required, but probably nothing more than that because they’re usually screwed or glued in place. It’s a different story when removing tiles, as it’s hard to do so without damaging the walls, making it more of a New Year challenge than a quick pre-Christmas project.
LOOKING for a fun DIY Christmas present? The new Black & Decker Gyro Driver BDCS36G cordless screwdriver (£39.98, B&Q) is just the thing because, uniquely, it’s controlled by motion. It uses gyroscopic sensors similar to those in computer gaming controls and handheld tablets, so instead of pressing a forward and reverse button, you control the direction you’re screwing in with a twist of the wrist – it’s that clever. You twist the Gyro Driver one way to drive in the screw, and the other way to remove it. This is also how you control the speed – it starts off slowly, so you’re less likely to damage the screw head, and to go faster, you simply twist it further. The Gyro Driver, above and inset, below, is really lightweight, comfy to hold, and compact – it’s perfect for small hands, if you know a junior DIYer – and has a 3.6v lithium-ion battery that lasts for up to 18 hours on a full charge. It also has a built-in LED light, which comes in handy when you’re working in a cupboard or poor light.

Mark the 12 days of Christmas with a scent for every occasion. Gabrielle Fagan finds some fabulous festive fragrances
W
ITH all the focus on shopping and decorating for Christmas, it can be easy to overlook one vital ingredient – how your home smells. The right scents conjure atmosphere and enhance an occasion, whether it’s tangy pine or the sweet warming tones of vanilla. “Imagine Christmas without all the wonderful scents it comes with and you’ll understand why home fragrance is so important at this time of year,” says Clive Harper, managing director of Yankee Candle Europe. “The smell of pine from the Christmas tree, a pomander with the scent of orange infused with cloves, and the fragrance of fruity spice in mulled wine are all so familiar and as much of a Christmas tradition as hanging up a stocking on Christmas Eve.” The favourite scents for this time of year radiate comfort and warmth, from musky evergreens and warm cedarwood to the festive spice of cinnamon. “Christmas is a time for nostalgia and tradition, for family gatherings and for remembering moments in time, and it is these emotions people seek to recreate and conjure with the home fragrances they choose. After all, smell is the most powerful sense for evoking memories,” says Harper. There’s a vast array of fragrances to choose from, but Harper believes our scent memory is usually the best guide. “It’s not so much a case of you picking a home fragrance, more that home fragrance picks you,” he says. “Fragrance is deeply personal, you don’t have a choice between which scents you like and which you don’t. “Throughout our lives, we store information on smells, creating a complex stockpile of memories and associations, all of which have a huge impact on whether we like a fragrance or not.” As a general guide, he says, lavender is a relaxant and a sleep aid, vanilla is comforting, floral scents are generally calming and fruity scents revitalise an atmosphere and are perfect for a party. Lisa Hipgrave, director of the International Fragrance Association (UK), adds: “Contemporary fragrances can be lovely, too. “Some room scents recreate the fragrance of snow flakes and ice. “These, crisp, cold, fashionable scents are achieved using ingredients with herbal, menthol

So set the scene by matching your room fragrance to your style.” Say it with scent this season and choose from 12 festive fragrances . . . ● SHOPPER’S SCENT: Evoke

Interacting with As students at UK horticultural colleges create sustainable gardens to showcase for the Prince of Wales, Hannah Stephenson seeks out gardening tips from their mentor, TV gardener David Domoney
O
LDER gardeners could pick up some tips from a new generation of young horticulturists who have grown up with the eco-friendly, sustainability mentality. So says TV gardener David Domoney, who is mentoring students from six UK horticultural colleges as they create gardens with a sustainability theme as part of the Ideal Young Gardener of the Year competition, in association with the Prince’s Foundation. Young people are becoming much more aware of the importance of sustainable gardening, thanks to programmes such as Countryfile and other horticultural shows, he says. “Television has greatly influenced kids to an acceptability that wildlife is very important. There are a lot of little quirky designs in
BOXING CLEVER: Attracting birds and other wildlife into your garden, above, is part of the latest trend of eco-sustainability, says TV gardener David Domoney, inset, left their gardens that really work.” Natural stone and brick have been used to create mini pizza ovens, bulbs utilised to create 100 days of colour, while other students are using a combination of planting to create fluid movements in between timber and stone. Herbs will be used for flowers and foliage. Ornamental plants which are also edible are being planted in blocks to create an attractive view. “Kids today are working more with landcraft. Dry stone walling is immensely popular. When I was at

Some hollies, right, are grown for their variegated foliage, such as I. aquifolium “Silver Queen”, whose leaves have a pale edge. Despite its name, it’s a male holly without berries, as only female plants produce berries, so make sure you have several varieties or you may be disappointed. I. aquifolium “Handsworth New Silver” is a great choice, bearing glossy dark green leaves with spiny cream margins and vivid red berries in winter. If you are going for variegated types, put them in full sun for the best result, although they will tolerate dappled shade in any fertile, well-drained soil. college in the 1980s, things were very different. Today, there’s floristry and blacksmith work, as people hammer out their own statuettes and embellishments, and make woven wicker fencing. Land-based skills which have become popular at Chelsea have been adopted.” Youngsters have a different attitude to sustainability than previous generations, he agrees. “It’s become such an important part of the teaching, there’s an affinity to it, whereas other generations had to re-learn it. In the past decade, we’ve seen a huge change. Who would have thought 10 years ago we’d have been separating
our rubbish inside our kitchens? But kids of today are used to it. It’s part of their natural psyche.” So how can amateur gardeners make their own plots sustainable? Domoney says: “There’s a huge amount of confusion about what is sustainable and what is natural, whether everything has to be indigenous species and aspects of chemicals, peat and landcraft. “But for the general public who have their own gardens and like the feeling of sustainability, there are a few steps they can take to try to encourage that style of thinking.” Attracting as much wildlife as possible into the garden is the first
step any amateur gardener should take towards sustainability as part of an equal balance, he notes: “That means attracting everything from wild birds – creating not only a feeding and water station yearround, putting up bird boxes and roosting pouches – to insects that visit the garden, not just bees. Make little bee stations using cut bamboo canes tied together, or leave a section of the garden uncut. “To create an eco-climate in your own back garden, you need to do less gardening, in some aspect,” he explains. “Having a section with old logs stacked in the corner will attract a phenomenal amount of

overwintering insects as well as hedgehogs, which eat slugs. Let a section of the grass grow wild. “Interacting with the nature that visits your garden is a good step forward for sustainability.” As green space becomes more scarce, sustainable gardens will become more valuable in the future, he predicts: “The garden is becoming much more influential for young families and new home owners. A garden is becoming an investment, a fashion statement, rather than just somewhere to put the bikes.”

Good enough to eat Brassicas WITH the persistent rain and wind of recent weeks, it’s doubly important to earth up spring cabbages and other winter brassicas to give them better anchorage in inclement weather. Prevent tall-growing Brussels sprouts, right, from being blown over by supporting them with canes and tying them in firmly. Remove yellowing leaves regularly as these encourage fungal disease. Sprouts should be harvested from the stem upwards once they have reached 2.5cm (1in) in diameter. In midspring, when the soil is moist, feed and mulch both newly planted and established trees, sprinkling general fertiliser or rose food around them.

Leave trees grown in grass with a ring of soil around the trunk at least 90cm (3ft) across, as grass competes with young trees for water and nutrients.

First-timers still facing a fight to clamber on to property ladder HOUSE prices are likely to remain flat throughout next year as firsttime buyers continue to struggle to get on the property ladder and the market remains strongest in London and the South, the Halifax said today. The lender predicts that prices will remain within a margin of between plus and minus 2% during 2013, ending the year at similar levels to now before slowly climbing as the economy strengthens. It added that house prices rose by 1% month-on-month in November to reach an average of £160,879, but they lack any clear direction, with five monthly rises and six falls this year. Prices are 1.3% lower than they were a year ago, which shows “remarkable stability” against the tough economic backdrop, Halifax said. Halifax housing economist Martin Ellis said pressures such as
TOUGH TIME: It will still be difficult for first-time buyers to get hold of their own home this coming year, says the Halifax rising utility prices and slow wage growth are likely to continue to restrict the number of home buyers, while the outlook for the wider UK economy remains unclear amid continuing problems in the eurozone. Mr Ellis said that against this difficult background, any house price growth is likely to remain
“modest” in the next few years. He said: “House prices are likely to rise, albeit very slowly, beyond 2013 as the economic recovery strengthens. “Economic growth, however, is likely to remain below the longterm average pace for some time as the household sector continues the lengthy process of rebalancing
its finances and the fiscal squeeze is maintained to bring the public finances under control.” Speaking about his predictions for next year, he added: “Prices are again likely to end the year at levels close to where they begin, with the market continuing to lack any genuine direction.” The study predicts that conditions for would-be first-time buyers will remain tough next year, which will in turn keep up the pressure on the rental sector. Rents have soared as people have remained trapped in the sector, either because they cannot raise the deposit needed or meet lenders’ toughened borrowing criteria. The potential for attractive returns on rents for landlords will probably mean further growth in the buy-to-let sector, Halifax said. The North/South divide is also set to continue, with house prices likely to be strongest in London
and the South East amid strong demand from overseas buyers looking to protect their money from the eurozone troubles, Halifax said. Recently published Land Registry figures for October showed that prices grew by 7% year-on-year in London but dropped by 6% over the same period in the North East. Halifax said that the market will be given some support next year by measures such as a multibillion- pound Government scheme launched in August to boost lending to firms and households, which has caused an increase in mortgage availability. Mortgage payments have also become more affordable amid low interest rates. Typical payments for a new borrower take up around 26% of their take-home pay, compared with an average of 36% over the last three decades, Halifax said.

Buy a second-hand home and, on average, you’ll spend £22,000* on getting it just the way you want it. You’ll also spend an average of £28,000** on a deposit, stamp duty and solicitor’s fees. That’s £50,000 you need to find at a time when finding any amount isn’t easy. But buy a new home through smartnewhomes.com (we’ve got more than anyone else from builders across the country - and tons of deals too) and you could keep that money for yourself. A new home needs no maintenance - and because we have all the latest deals, you could have your deposit and fees paid too.
